Two flat-lying trona seams 3-to 3.5-m thick, approximately 10 m apart, and at depths of 250 m are mined by room-and-pillar at OCI's Big Island Mine in Wyoming. Continuous miners and a yielding pillar system have contributed to improvements in resource recovery and productivity. Long-term stability with minimal subsidence is needed for a large portion of the mine beneath the Green River channel. This was investigated by computer modeling in 1990. Although results of the study indicated good long-term stability, recommendations were made for stress determinations to verify the model. Stress determinations made in 1997 showed pillar stresses 10% to 20% higher than the model stresses, and barrier pillar stresses 10% to 15% lower. This implies that higher panel stresses will be transmitted from the upper to the lower seam. A stability evaluation of the lower seam is planned before two-seam mining to assess entry widths and support requirements.

In longwall mining, the progressive caving of the roof allows stored energy to dissipate over an extended time. However, in some cases, the roof strata above the longwall panel are unusually strong and do not break with the movement of the working face. Instead, the roof material bridges over the expanse of the longwall, forming an unstable beam. Later, when this beam breaks, the stored energy can release suddenly, causing a seismic event to propagate to surrounding mine workings. The focus of this paper is to estimate the size of beams that form over longwall panels to the seismic energy recorded by the mine. Analytical calculations are used to verify two-dimensional models of longwall roof beams to determine the strain energy and gravitational energy developed, which is then released upon strata failure to surrounding mine workings. Models are developed using RS2 to model the stress, strain, and deflection along the bottom of the longwall roof beam to calculate gravitational and strain energies. Gravitational energy is shown to be the main driving factor in energy release, except for the beams with low heights. Analyses allow the determination of beam characteristics based on seismic data. The analysis is refined using swelling factor to compare various beam drop heights. The models show an increase in seismic magnitude for higher drop heights. However, the actual data provided by the Buchanan mine displays a decrease in seismic magnitude with increasing drop height, indicating that energy is dissipated into the broken gob material as drop height increases.

The fiber glass industry is an industry that. hopefully is still in its infancy and far from a mature business. Fiber glass, as will be discussed in this paper, deals with continuous strand glass as used in the textile laminate and reinforced plastics industries. More specifically, we are speaking of glass used for printed circuit boards, tapes, paper, cloth, pipes, tanks, boats, recreational equipment, roofing shingles, and automotive applications. Compared to the flat, container and decorative glass industries, we are very young. The early patents on fiber glass applications were issued in the 1930's. The type of glass most commonly used in the world and that discussed in this paper is designated as "E" glass. This is a boro-silicate type glass having specific chemical and electrical resistance and low thermal expansion properties.

Activated carbon loaded with gold from different halide solutions has been characterized by thermal analysis techniques. The mechanism of gold uptake by carbon varies from predominately adsorption for gold iodide to predominately reduction for gold chloride. TGA and DT A measurements confirm the existence of adsorbed gold-halide species within the micropore structure of carbon. These results suggest that the ration of reduced; adsorbed gold increases for gold halides in the order Au-I > Au-Br > Au-Cl. In the case of Au-I, TA results for the loaded carbon were compared with pure compounds of 12, AuI and AuI3.

Flotation columns are widely used in mineral processing and coal preparation industry today. Mathematical modeling of flotation columns has conventionally been done using axial dispersion or tank-in-series models. However, for design and scale up purposes these models are not adequate enough because they do not provide detailed information of the flow fields within the column. This paper presents a Two-Dimensional, Two-Phase. Fluid-dynamic Model and its numerical solutions for some cases encountered in column flotation. The MAC (Marker and Cell) method was employed to obtain the numerical solutions, and based on this method a computer code COLUMNFLOW was developed. The simulated flow field reveals the presence of a circulation flow structure in flotation columns, which could be one of the main reasons for mixing in column flotation. The effects of some parameters such as superficial gas and liquid velocities on the characteristics of the flow structure in flotation columns were also tested with the numerical model.

The development of a new means of measuring the relative abrasivity of a slurry came about by necessity in 1967 during a full scale loop test of a 560 H.P. reciprocating pump handling magnetite slurry. In order to evaluate the life of expendable fluid end parts, the question of the amount of attrition in a re-circulated slurry had to be considered. An expected reduction in abrasivity as a result of this attrition would certainly give erroneous data on a parts life test. There- fore, some means of measuring such change in abrasivity became imperative. Several test methods were investigated1 but it was felt that these did not fully represent the wear due to back and forth rubbing action associated with a reciprocating pump. A "rubbing block" device used some years ago to determine the quality of hard facing materials was recalled, along with its shortcomings, in that an attempt was made to suspend a small percentage of abrasive particles in a colloidal viscous "mud". Erratic results were attributed to the fact that it was difficult to maintain a consistent slurry concentration under the metal wear block and the reciprocating speed was not great enough to maintain good agitation.

The U1h Shaft Project is a design/build subcontract to construct one 6.1 meter(m) (20 feet [ft.]) finished diameter shaft to a depth of 321.6 meters (m) (1055 ft.) at the Nevada Test Site (NTS). Atkinson Construction was subcontracted by Bechtel Nevada(BN) to construct the U1h Shaft for the Department of Energy (DOE). The project consists of furnishing and installing the sinking plant, construction of the 321.6 m(1055 ft.) of concrete lined shaft, development of a shaft station at a depth of 297.5 m(976 ft.), and construction of a loading pocket at the station. The outfitting of the shaft and installation of a new hoist may be incorporated into the project at a later date. This paper will describe the design phase, the excavation and lining operation, shaft station construction and the contractual challenges encountered on this project.

The on-stream analysis of phosphorus and silica has not been possible by XRF techniques and only recently has some success been indicated with quantitative XRD for P. Yet there has been a recognized need for an on-stream analysis of P and acid insoluble to permit the automatic control of phosphate rock flotation plants which produce some 30-40 million tons of concentrate each year in the southeastern U.S. IMC Fertilizer, Inc., the largest U.S. phosphate rock producer, embarked on a program to develop such an on-stream analysis capability several years ago. Following many months of lab and prototype development, the first commercial installations started in December 1986 and now have completed some 400,000 analyses with surprising accuracy, precision and reliability. The use of these devices in the improved control of the phosphate flotation plant is currently receiving some very serious attention at IMC.

Since the earliest days of mining, the job of digging coal out of the earth has been considered one of the world?s most dangerous occupations. From 1880 to 1910, mine explosions and other accidents claimed thousands of victims. In 1907 alone, over three thousand deaths occurred in U.S. coal mines. Public concern has prompted the passage of much needed safety legislation; from the creation of the U.S. Bureau of Mines in 1910, to the comprehensive laws of the Federal Mine Safety and Health Act of 1977. This type of legislation, along with the cooperation of industry, labor, and MSHA has contributed greatly in making mining safer and more healthful. Mining deaths and injuries have declined Significantly since those early days. However, even though this trend is positive, none of US can afford to look at the injury numbers and frequency rates and label them as acceptable.

Abstract. Induced fluorescent sorting is a means of beneficiating an ore by selective labeling with a reagent combination which fluoresces when activated by ultraviolet light The reagent combination normally consists of a surface active compound and a fluorescent dye. The surfactant adheres selectively to a specific surface and carries the dye with it. Upon activation with ultraviolet light, the labeled pieces, in the size range 1.27 cm to 20 cm (0.5 to 8 in.), are detected during free fall by photosensitive cells and ejected by water jets. Either ore or gangue may be labeled.

The process of treating granular activated carbon for return to service in the recovery of gold in Carbon in Pulp and Carbon in Leach circuits has been investigated. Carbons from four U.S.A. mines, one Canadian mine and one South African mine were characterized before and after regeneration. The use of thermal gravimetric analyses demonstrated the presence of inorganic compounds on the surface of the carbon. Thermal regeneration was investigated using factorial' analysis to determine the effect or interaction of furnace temperature, retention time and the use of supplemental steam. The operation of acid leaching prior to or after gold elution was investigated. The effect of water quenching, regenerated carbon was also studied. From the data obtained in this investigation, guidelines are given for effective regeneration operation.

Mixer-settler extractors, among the oldest forms of extraction equipment, have been used since the beginning of this century. Over the past years, a very large number of mixer-settler devices have been designed and operated. Both batch and continuous flow mixer-settlers have been used. The continuous flow mixer-settler extractor offers a great number of advantages over other extraction equipment. The main advantage of the continuous flow mixer-settler is that it is a compact device. A large number of stages can be assembled in a relatively small area, and more stages can be added fairly easily. Many improvements have been made in the design of mixer-settlers. These improvements occurred in almost every phase of mixer-settler' operation; interface control, mixer design, intrastage pumping, interstage flow of the two liquid phases, and stage construction. It is believed that Barstow1 used one of the first continuous mixer-settler extractors. This mixer-settler had concurrent flow within each stage and countercurrent flow overall. The flow for both phases took place by gravity. The Barstow device and other early mixer-settlers had no separate interface control for each stage, therefore, "tilting" of the stages was necessary. In 1934 Holley and Mott2 designed a mixer-settler in which the heavy phase was recirculated within each stage by the use of a valve controlled central line instead of by a pump. Gordon and Zeigler3 in 1939 were among the first to use an adjustable valve to control the interface levels in a mixer-settler, making tilting of the extractor unnecessary. Laboratory testing by the Federal Bureau of Mines has shown that the removal of insoluble slimes using selective flocculation and flotation is a viable method for treating low-grade potash ores which have a high content of water-insoluble impurities. Results indicated that up to 85 percent of the insoluble slimes could be removed from sylvinite ore containing 5 percent water insolubles and 13 percent K20 using nonionic or cationic polyacrylamide flocculants and cationic, anionic, and/or nonionic collectors. Subsequent potash flotation recovered up to 88 percent of the potash in rougher concentrates containing 47 to 57 percent K20. Sizing and cleaner flotation of the rougher concentrates upgraded the products to 60 percent K20. Filtration of the insoluble slimes flotation concentrates recovered 87 to 0 percent of the brine. Flotation concentrate filtration rates were 7 times faster than the filtration rates of mechanically deslimed products.

The Piedmont province of the southern Appalachians is becoming the focus of interest for many exploration geologists. In the past, only those deposits with significant surface exposure have been exploited. Thus, few deposits have been found and relatively little exploration has been conducted in recent years. Modern geochemical and geophysical techniques can alleviate this problem of concentrating on exposed ore bodies by allowing us to "look through" the soil and saprolite to detect the presence of significant mineralization at depth. This paper will attempt to evaluate the feasibility and effectiveness of several geo¬chemical exploration techniques in the Piedmont, of Cabarrus and Stanly Counties, North Carolina. The area chosen for the study is shown in Figure 1, lying almost wholly within the Mt. Pleasant quadrangle, North Carolina. The area is on the eastern boundary between the Charlotte belt, a zone of plutonic and intermediate grade metamorphic rocks, and the Carolina Slate belt, a series of complexly interbedded volcanic and sedimentary rocks of predominantly low grade metamorphism. The area is now considered to be a 500 million year old active, continental margin.1 As is typical of most of the piedmont, outcrop is sparse. Figure 2 is a sketch map of the general geology of the area under study, showing the Charlotte belt rocks in the northwestern quadrant and slate belt rocks, to the east. Within the area are a number of old mines and prospects, the most famous of which are the Furniss and the Phoenix mines in Cabarrus County. All are reported to have contained Au and Cu. Ag and Pb were reported from some. A summary of the deposits is given in Table 1. Data used in this study are from three Master's theses conducted at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. 3,3,6 In separate studies, well waters5, B-zone soils3, and vein and float quartz6 from the area described were sampled and analyzed. The potash industry in Saskatchewan has recently been the focus of much new legislation at the provincial level and, along with other mining industries in Canada, also subject to changes in tax legislation at the federal level. As a result, the industry presently operates under (a) provincial production controls, a prorationing scheme; (b) a new provincial reserve tax on potash only and; (c) a new federal income tax applicable to all mineral industries. The prorating scheme dates back to 1970 and emerged as public policy because of the excess supply situation faced by the international potash industry towards the end of the sixties. This caused special problems for new mines in Saskatchewan and the provincial government decided to intervene. The new tax legislation at provincial and federal levels, both introduced within the last four years, reflects a belief that insufficient revenues accrue to the public sector from natural resources. All mining industries in Canada, including the potash industry, have had their tax positions completely reversed during these four years. Traditionally the mining sector in Canada has been a recipient of substantial tax incentives and has enjoyed low tax rates. This has changed and the mining sector is now one of the most heavily taxed sectors in the economy. In addition, the mining sector has moved from a situation where its rapid development was favoured by governments to a situation where this is no longer the case.

In recent years, it has been recognized that the high horizontal stress is an important factor that contributes to a cutter roof. When the immediate roof is thinly bedded, the presence of a high horizontal stress may first cause failure on the bedding planes or weak planes, and then a cutter roof develops as the individual stratum crushes and buckles progressively layer by layer. In this study, the stress distributions in the bedding planes of the immediate roof are analyzed for an entry-pillar system in the multiple longwall panels by using the finite element method. Then the roof failure is analyzed based on the rock failure criterion and the stress distributions.

The production of salt through brining operations and the recovery of potash salts by means of solution with water constitute, in large measure, processes which have been used for many years. And although the salt industry has utilized dissolution techniques for years and years it has been only recently that a better understanding of the mechanism of solution has emerged. Greater adaptability of solution mining processes for recovery of valuable salts from ore bodies found at greater and greater depth has resulted in increased adoption of such methods. Because of the high costs of mining in beds of limited thickness, modifications probable when extracting mixed halites, and restrictions (mostly self-imposed) regarding the extent of cavern development to minimize or eliminate subsidence more information is needed on the solution mechanism. It is the purpose of this paper to present the fundamental aspects of the problem of total solution of salts and to point out the developments of certain solution mining techniques.

"Over recent years, specifically following the MINER Act of 2006, an increasing number of manufacturers of underground mine seals in the United States have begun using a form of pumpable cement or shotcrete to create barriers separating the working and abandoned sections of underground coal mines. This seal material, while generally considered to be homogenous and solid, contains a network of microcracks, voids, and delaminations. Generally, it has been assumed that methane (CF4) leakage around these seals is a result of movement around the boundary interface between the seal and surrounding strata. Using a perfluorinated tracer compound, perfluoromethyl-cyclohexane (PMCH), the movement of gases can be monitored through seal material to observe how gases move though the material, both intact and with faulting in the material. This paper documents two large experiments where the movement of PMCH was monitored in the field, along with modeling confirmation using 3D visualization software. INTRODUCTION According to a report in 2007, there were over 14,000 active mine seals in underground U.S. coal mines alone (Zipf, Sapko, & Brune, 2007). These seals are used for both ventilation and safety purposes, to direct the flow of air away from the abandoned area of the mine and to help eliminate the propagation of explosions that can occur on the outby side of the mine seal. The atmosphere on the outby side of these seals typical consists of low levels of methane that have the potential of producing leakage along the face of the seal on the inby side. Methane leakage around mine seals has historically been attributed to the permeability between the seal and mine interface (McPherson, 1993). According to the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) between 2003 and 2012 an average of 17 deaths occurred annually in underground bituminous coals mines. The only time during the ten-year period where the fatalities were higher than the average was in 2006 and 2010, years which had three major explosions occurring in underground coal mines in West Virginia and Kentucky. Two of the explosions were propagated through the mine by seal failure or methane leakage around newly poured seals (Light, et al., 2007) (Gates, et al., 2006). These recent events, and new regulations regarding seal strength (MINER Act), have created a need to monitor the condition of underground mine seals. BACKGROUND Measuring the permeability of solid materials, such as concrete or seal materials, can be a valuable tool in the field of non-destructible testing (NDT). By using an inert gas, such as nitrogen, injecting the gas into a solid structure, and measuring the resultant flow rate and pressure differential, this can provide valuable information about the structure. Studies have shown permeability can be affected by the stresses applied to the structure, as well as temperature and moisture (Choinska, Khelidj, Chatzigeorgious, & Pijaudier-Cabot, 2007) (Abbas, Carcasses, & Olliver, 1999)."

Compania Minera Disputada de las Condes (CMD), an Exxon Affiliate stewarded by Exxon Coal and Minerals Company, operates two' copper mines and concentrators in Chile. Pilot plant studies were initiated in 1984 using a 0.46 meter and a 0.91 meter diameter column for the cleaning of copper concentrate. This eventually resulted in the design and operation of a rectangular column with an area of 6.8 m2, increasing the final copper concentrate grade from about 30% to almost 32'1. Cu without any loss in copper recovery. Evaluation studies of a commercial bubble generator as against the previously used filter cloth air sparger are now in progress.
