Tellurium (Te), a critical mineral for solar energy technologies, faces supply risk challenges that drive the development of diversified and robust production routes. This research focused on improving Te enrichment from copper tailings (CT) produced from copper porphyry (CP) ores processing, addressing the loss of ~90% of Te minerals to tailings in the flotation process of CP ores. Gravity separation and froth flotation processes were used as possible enrichment routes of Te-bearing minerals (i.e., pyrite) in CT. In the froth flotation process, synergistic combinations of reagents were tested to achieve an acceptable enrichment ratio of Te minerals. Comprehensive characterization analyses showed significant Te enrichment in the flotation concentrates. Tellurium was recovered at 90%, while the grade of Te in the concentrates was 1.4 ppm using a xanthate collector and glycol frother compared to <0.5 ppm in the flotation feed. Findings showed that Te-minerals’ enrichment was also feasible in CT using the proposed combined concentrations routes (i.e., gravity separation followed by froth flotation) by looking at Fe, Cu, and S enrichment. This study also highlighted the importance of understanding the deportment of Te minerals in different process streams to develop and optimize efficient enrichment practices.

INTRODUCTION Laboratory testing for magnetic concentration circuit design is a requirement, just as it is for most other types of concentration. Natural variations in raw materials allow on1 y the broadest of generalities to be made regarding magnetic separation. Further, magnetic fields are geometry dependent, leaving fundamental models of a separator overly dependent upon the exact conditions for which the models were derived. Despite this, an understanding of the basics of magnetic separation and of the problem to be attacked can result in rapid progress towards the final circuit design with a relatively simple testing program. Magnetic Separation Basic Principles A magnetic field can readily be understood in terms of lines of flux. A familiar demonstration of these lines of flux is the pattern of iron filings on a sheet of paper when a magnet is placed underneath. Lines of flux2 are measured in Gauss (1 line/cm2) or Tesla (10000 gauss). Regions of high field strength have a greater number of lines. Field direction is indicated by a convergence of lines. When a particle is placed in a magnetic field it cuts the lines of flux and alters them in one of three basic patterns. These patterns are referred to as diamagnetic, paramagnetic and ferromagnetic. Diamagnetic materials have electronic structures which react to oppose an applied magnetic field. This opposition acts to locally reduce the applied field slightly. The visualization is that lines of flux diverge and go around the particle. Because of this divergence or opposition, a diamagnetic particle will tend to move towards regions of lower flux density. That is to say that the particle will be repelled by a magnetic field. Aluminum oxide and napthalene are examples of diamagnetic materials. Paramagnetic materials have an electronic structure which increases an applied magnetic field. Although these materials also exhibit diamagnetism, they have randomly oriented impaired electrons which align with the magnetic field. Resin-grouted bolts serve as a crucial means of stabilizing yielded coal ribs in underground coal mines. A comprehensive investigation into their efficacy was undertaken by a collaborative effort between the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and Missouri University of Science and Technology (MST). This study involved pull-out tests in multiple locations, including six coal mines and the NIOSH research mine. A total of seventy-three (73) tests were conducted, of wide range of anchorage lengths, ranging from a short encapsulation length of 0.305 m to a fully grouted encapsulation length of 1.524 m. The test findings indicate that when short encapsulation bolts are installed at high rotation speeds, their anchorage capacity is significantly reduced, leading to failure at the bolt-grout interface. Conversely, when these bolts are installed at lower rotation speeds, they exhibit greater capacity, with failure occurring at a higher anchorage load equivalent to the yield load of steel rebar. No matter what the rotational speeds were used during bolt installation in this study, the fully grouted bolts consistently experienced failure at the ultimate load of the steel rebar. Most of the tests carried out on partially grouted bolts with anchorage lengths of 0.610 - 0.914 m have shown behavior patterns like the fully grouted bolts, although exhibiting reduced stiffness. The outcomes of this research offer a profound insight into the ways in which resin-grouted bolts enhance the stability of coal mine ribs.

The lack of progress in controlling pulmonary diseases such as pneumoconiosis cases in recent years necessitates additional studies on dust generation and the characterization of airborne dust. Studies are underway by a NIOSH-sponsored project to observe the characteristics of the dust generated by pick cutters under various wear levels. This research performed a full-scale linear-cutting-test matrix on eight coal samples with various bit penetrations, spacing, and wear conditions. The specific energy and resulting PSD (particle size distribution) of airborne dust and material left at the cutting surface were measured and analyzed. The dust concentration was determined using the NMAM (NIOSH Manual of Analytical Methods) 0600 method. For fines, the PSD was characterized using Laser Diffraction, measuring percent channel and aerodynamic diameter, while Imagej, a virtual sieving application, was used for larger particles. The results show that for a new bit, as the cutting depth and spacing increase, the specific energy and dust generation decrease. The size and shape of the dust particles have been analyzed, and the observed trends are discussed in this paper.

To solve the problem of time-consuming and low precision in updating the open-pit vehicle transportation network, a high precision road network model construction method for unmanned vehicles in open-pit mines is proposed. This method can be divided into two steps. In the first step, an improved deep learning image processing model named DeepLabv3 + C (DeepLabv3 + Concat) is presented. Then, the road information extracted by the DeepLabv3 + C network is used to construct a three-dimensional model of the open-pit mine road network. In the second step, aiming at the time-consuming problem of unmanned vehicle meeting in open-pit mines, a vehicle meeting strategy was proposed. This strategy is used to guide the navigation of unmanned vehicles in open-pit mines. Besides, the DeepLabv3 + C network is verified by comparing the mIOU (means Intersection Over Union), accuracy, and continuity of road image extraction with the mainstream networks. The road network model constructed in the first step is quantitatively analyzed, and its performance is compared with GPS trajectory clustering methods. At the end of the paper, vehicle running simulation is carried out on the road network model by using Unity (a 3D visualization simulation software). The results show that the road network model constructed by this method can meet the navigation requirements of unmanned vehicles in open-pit mines, and the feasibility of the vehicle meeting strategy is proved.

The goal of hot mix asphalt (HMA) design is optimal material blending to meet Superpave specifications. HMA cost minimization has being modeled as linear programing (LP) (Awuah-Offei et al 2011) and mixed integer LP problems (Brown et al, 2012) and solved with commercial software such as LINDO and CPLEX. Often these software, which are designed to solve general optimization problems, have licenses that cost thousands of dollars. The objective of this study is to develop a novel solution algorithm to the HMA optimization problem presented by Brown et al. (2012), which will negate the need for expensive commercial packages and is specific to this problem. This novel algorithm is based on the branch and bound algorithm for solving mixed integer problems. The algorithm is incorporated into a software package with an easy-to-use graphical user interface. The developed algorithm is validated using a real-life HMA problem. Using this solution algorithm will save companies thousands of dollars, otherwise used to purchase software licenses.

A study was conducted to examine the potential of diesel emissions control strategies based on retrofitting existing power packages with exhaust aftertreatment devices and repowering with advanced power packages. The retrofit systems, a diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC) and diesel particulate filter (DPF), were evaluated individually using a US EPA tier 2 (ter 2) engine operated under four steady-state conditions and one transient cycle. The DOC effectively curtailed emissions of CO, and to some extent organic carbon (OC), elemental carbon (EC), and aerosol number concentration. The DPF system offered substantially higher reductions in OC and EC mass and aerosol number concentrations. Both, the DOC and DPF achieved reductions in the aforementioned emissions without adversely affecting emissions of NO2 and nano-sized aerosols. The strategy of repowering with an advanced system was examined using a US EPA tier 4 final (tier 4f) engine equipped with a cooled exhaust gas recirculation system and diesel exhaust fluid-based selective catalytic reduction system, but not with a DPF system. The tier 4f engine contributed substantially less than the tier 2 engine to the EC and OC mass, aerosol number, and CO, NO, and NO2 concentrations. The tier 4f engine was very effective in reducing aerosol mass, NO, and NO2 concentrations, but it was not equally effective in reducing aerosol number concentrations. The implementation of viable exhaust after treatment systems and advanced diesel power packages could be instrumental to the underground mining industry to secure a clean, economical, and dependable source of power for mobile equipment.

Since the late 19405, St. Joe has operated rubber-tired, trackless mining equipment underground in its Southeast Missouri Lead Belt operations. At first, the trackless equipment was operated in conjunction with rail haulage equipment in the room-and-pillar operations, but was to later replace rail haulage completely. The first pieces of equipment to travel on pneumatic rubber tires were short-haul shuttle cars of 12-ton capacity hauling rock from the heading to the mainline railroad. Early-model drill jumbos were the next pieces of production equipment to be carried on rubber, along with mobile slusher ramps. Mobile diesel equipment, in the form of conventional rear-dump trucks, made its appearance underground in the early 1950s, introducing the era of relatively high-speed mobile equipment as compared to the electrically powered shuttle cars. Haulage distances for rubber-tired vehicles were no longer dictated by trolley lines and trailing cables and tires were subjected to increasingly severe applications. St. Joe&apos;s first completely trackless mine, the Hayden Creek Mine, was opened in 1952, employing rubber-tired drill jumbos, electric shuttle cars, and for the first time, an articulated diesel truck consisting of the tractor unit of a conventional earthmoving scraper and a rear-dump rock wagon. Those machines rolled on the first true earthmover tires to be used underground by St. Joe. The articulated truck concept proved to be very successful, and constitutes an In- creasing portion of the underground haulage today.

Is a shaft the same as a tunnel and can it be approached in the same manner for design and construction? The most obvious difference between a shaft and a tunnel is that of orientation; whereas a tunnel is commonly near horizontal or slightly dipping, a shaft is commonly vertical or steeply inclined. As a result, design and construction methods employed for tunneling, in general, cannot be directly applied to shafts, although some of the basic concepts of behavior are quite similar. Many of the shafts that have been sunk in various parts of the world are owned by private mining companies. Each company has generally accumulated years of experience in shaft sinking and mining techniques pertinent to its particular geographic location. When a new shaft is to be sunk or an existing shaft deepened, the tendency often seems to be to continue to use the methods that have been used successfully in the past.

Controlling dust generation and keeping it below permissible limits to meet federal dust standards at the working face of a roomand-pillar coal mine is a challenge for a mine operator. With the recent changes in federal dust regulations requiring lower worker exposure, maintaining compliance has become increasingly difficult. The current most effective practice of dust control at a continuous miner face in an underground mine is the use of a flooded-bed scrubber. A study carried out by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) indicated that a flooded-bed scrubber could achieve cleaning efficiencies between 58 and 90%. But, the operation of such a system is maintenance intensive. The flooded-bed scrubber screen becomes clogged with dust particles and requires frequent cleaning to maintain performance. However, the dust control issue is not solely a mining industry problem. Other industries face similar issues. The University of Kentucky collaborated with Toyota Motor Manufacturing on the development of a novel wet scrubber, called the vortecone scrubber, for capturing oversprayed paint particles in automotive paint booths. The vortecone scrubber achieved a cleaning efficiency of 99% and required minimal maintenance. This study aims to assess the ability of this vortecone scrubber to capture respirable dust in an underground coal mine. The paper presents the results of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modeling of this vortecone scrubber. It discusses the effects of air quantity and dust particle size on the performance of the scrubber.

The integrated grouting method, as developed in the USSR, can be applied to multi-purpose operations that in¬clude the construction of shafts, drifts, and tunnels. In the USSR it has been used extensively for primary and final grouting of underground excavations in mining engineering and civil engineering projects. It has been applied in projects where the primary objective was waste contain¬ment. It has also been used to control subsidence beneath buildings located over mined out openings and to eliminate the flow of ground water beneath and around dams. This chapter considers several industrial applications in the form of case histories. The word integrated means that grouting activities were integrated with other activities. 9.1 CASE HISTORIES OF GROUTING FRACTURED ROCK WHEN SINKING VERTICAL SHAFTS The integrated grouting method has been applied most widely in the sinking of vertical shafts in fractured, satu¬rated rock. As explained previously herein, grouting oper¬ations preferably are carried out from the ground surface where they are integrated into the schedule of the setting up of the shaft excavation and construction equipment. Such integration reduces significantly the length of time required for preparation of shaft construction and the time required to sink the shaft. The increased efficiency is achieved by the elimination of cementing operations from the working face upon the penetration of each aquifer. Concomitantly, labor and energy consumption during shaft sinking are minimized because the more complicated and labor-intensive work is carried out at the surface section. Table 9.1 presents the essential parameters for the pri¬mary grouting of saturated fractured rock carried out by the integrated method when sinking vertical shafts. 9.1.1 NAGOL&apos;CHANSK MINE NO. 1-2, VENTILATION SHAFT NO. 1 The integrated method of grouting saturated fractured rock through holes drilled from the surface was employed for the first time during the sinking of vertical shaft No. 1 at the Nagol&apos;chansk mine No. 1-2 in the Don Basin. The shaft had an inside diameter of 6 m. The grouting operations commenced by using cement grout with a density of 1.7 to 1.8 g/cm3. Clay-based grout with cement and other addi¬tives was used only for grouting the aquifers where cement grout proved to be ineffective. By the time of the grouting of ventilation shaft No. 1, hydrodynamic analytical methods were well in hand and a preliminary method for designing isolation curtains had been developed. A method for designing and drilling ori¬ented directional drillholes whose natural curvature re¬flected the characteristics of the fracturing had been devel¬oped. The majority of the necessary equipment had been developed. Clay-based grouts were considered ready for the first industrial application. The hydrogeologic environment at the Nagol&apos;chansk mine No. 1-2 contained many prolific aquifers. According to monitored drillhole data, the total expected inflow into ventilation shaft No. 1 without grouting was 425 m3/hr. This large ground water inflow rate was supported by in¬formation obtained during the sinking of the main shaft and from the auxiliary shaft of the "Nagol&apos;chansk" mine No. 1-2. The construction contractor at the site began sinking ventilation shaft No. 1 to a depth of 217 m by cement grouting from the working face of the shaft. As a result of the cement grouting operations, the inflow of water was reduced from 105.4 to 40 m3/hr over this 217 m interval. However the residual inflow rate caused the shaft to become functional at the depth of 217 m. At this point all grouting operations were transferred to SPETSTAMPONAZHGEOLOGIA (STG) in an effort to improve the operation. In order to carry out preliminary grouting from the sur¬face, seven drillholes were installed and designed for re¬ceiving grout. Drilling was implemented by the ZIF-1200A rig to the design depth of the shaft. The geometry of the principal fracture system that would be encountered by the shaft was estimated while breaking ground using informa¬tion from other shafts. The drillholes were arranged so that they cut through the aquifers uniformly around the shaft. Some preference was given to intercepting the aquifers that were located along the rock dip above the shaft bottom because it was established that the ground water in the aqui¬fers flowed downward along the dip into the cone of de¬pression of the shaft. Investigations in the drillholes using the DAU-3M flowmeter described in Chapter 3 showed that all of the nine aquifers were penetrated by the time a depth of 690 m had been reached. The flowmetric information showed that aquifer numbers [1 and 2], [4, 5, and 6], and [7 and 8] had practically identical hydrogeologic characteristics; so it was decided to connect them into combined stopes and inject the grout using five stopes instead of nine. Table 9.2 shows the results of the grout injection into the aquifers. The volume of grout pumped into the separate intervals through single holes varied from 204 to 15 m3. Advances in the technology of abrasion resistant irons and steels, which could help in combating abrasion and wear in mining operations, are reviewed. Nodular irons alloyed with nickel or copper and molybdenum, with acicular, bainitic or bainitic-martensicic microstructures are described. These alloy irons combine excellent castability and relatively easy machinabilitv with good resistance to wear. Recent progress in the development of high chromium molybdenum alloy irons is outlined, by which high temperature heat treatment of massive castings can be eliminated, alloy costs can be reduced and cracking problems avoided. Data is also given on the erosion-corrosion resistance of these irons. Trends in the development of improved cast steels are outlined. Factors influencing the toughness and abrasion resistance of manganese steels are considered. The 6% Mn 1% Mo manganese steels are shown to have a useful combination of toughness and abrasion resistance. Composite castings are seen as a means of com- bating abrasion in applications involving severe impact. A brief appraisal is given of recently developed martensitic wrought steels with improved weldability.

Sulfides present in the troctolitic and footwall rocks are placed into one of three major zones (hornfels, cloud, and basal) on the basis of their stratigraphic position and mineralogy. Hornfels sulfides, enriched in Fe, represent remobilized sedimentary sulfide. Sulfides from the Cloud Zone are probably magmatic and are enriched in PGE, Cu, Ni, and Ag. The basal sulfides, composing most of the ore, resulted from contamination of the magma by remobilized sedimentary sulfide. The basal sulfides exhibit a differentiation trend in their mineralogy and chemistry. PGE, Cu, and Ag are enriched with increasing differentiation which is attributed to fractionation within an immiscible sulfide liquid.

The “Eggequerung” is an important part of the German Railway’s (Deutsche BahnAG) modernized Dortmund—Kassel line. The heart of this 13-km-long (8 miles)construction lot is the double-track Egge Tunnel with a total length of 2,880 m(9,450 ft.). The tunnel was driven using the New Austrian Tunnelling Method (NATM).The construction contract also called for a reinforced concrete secondary lining, guaranteed for a full water pressure of 30 m (100 ft.) water column. Preliminary geological study already showed that very problematic geological-hydrological conditions would have to be expected. This talk describes the chosen NATM driving concept that was adapted to the prevailing geological and hydrological conditions, the special driving method applied in geologically difficult zones as well as the water control concept used during driving. The flexibility and the limits of the NATM under exceptional hydrological conditions are illustrated. Also described are reinforced concrete lining works for the watertight secondary vault (reinforced concrete secondary lining without water-proofing membrane).

Ambient electromagnetic (EM) noise (natural or manmade) is a major limiting factor for the design and operation of many electronic devices, including through-the-earth (TTE) communications and tracking systems. Extensive studies on EM noise were conducted by the US Bureau of Mines in the 1970s and 1980s. Changes in the design and operation of electrical equipment since then, however, have resulted in changes in the EM noise environment. This paper reviews past research on surveying EM noise in the extremely low-frequency (ELF) and very-low-frequency (VLF) bands, which are the operating bands for TTE systems, and introduces a new battery-powered, rugged, portable measurement system for surveying EM noise in mining environments. Examples of surveyed EM noise measurement results in and above an active underground coal mine, using the new system, are presented in terms of absolute magnetic field strength levels. A new metric, average noise level (ANL), is introduced to characterize the noise level relative to a particular frequency band for a specific location. It is found that EM noise in mining environments varies significantly with time and location. EM noise levels at frequencies of 30 Hz that shifted from power harmonics (e.g., 90, 150, 210, 270 Hz) are relatively low and their variation with time can be statistically modeled by a Gaussian distribution. The conclusions and findings presented in this paper can help better design and operate TTE communications and tracking systems in underground mines.

A Deep Underground Science and Engineering Laboratory (DUSEL) is being planned at the site of the former Homestake Gold Mine in Lead, SD, under the sponsorship of the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) in cooperation with the Department of Energy (DOE). This national facility will host a variety of multidisciplinary science and engineering experiments, including physics experiments that require shielding from cosmogenic radiation. Current plans include construction of large rooms (up to 55 m in width) at depths of 1.48 km (4,850 ft) and 2.25 km (7,400 ft) below the surface. Preparation of the preliminary design required the development of a geotechnical characterization program, including preliminary drilling and coring, core logging, drill hole mapping with a televiewer, drift mapping of the geology and rock structure, in situ stress measurements, and laboratory testing of the mechanical properties of the rocks and discontinuities. Overall rock quality is very good to excellent. Site investigations included geotechnical assessments for the construction of caverns and laboratory modules. The results are favorable and reaffirm selection of the Homestake site for establishment of a Deep Underground Engineering and Science Laboratory.

This paper reviews the growth pattern in bauxite and alumina production, and primary aluminum smelting through 1980. Because the alumina and primary metal are intermediate products of the major integrated aluminum companies, it is not possible to determine their production costs. The costs indicated in this paper are order of magnitude costs based on published figures and the market price of these products. The conclusions in this paper indicate the general pattern of growth in the aluminum industry and are not meant to be a substitute for the feasibility and economic studies that are needed for individual bauxite mining, alumina refining and aluminum smelting projects.

GermanyINTRODUCTIONThe mining industry is currently characterized by various factors such as environmental impact, resource scarcity, social responsibility and geopolitical uncertainty. The production of minerals required to meet the demand for renewable energy is expected to increase by 500 % by 2050, particularly for critical minerals such as graphite, lithium and cobalt 1. Easily accessible deposits are often depleted, meaning that deeper and more complex deposits need to be developed. Furthermore, investors’ value systems have shifted towards more sustainable practices. Alternative approaches to solving this problem are therefore currently being developed, such as the Modular Mining Systems concept for scalable and adaptable mining projects 2. Many mining companies have also taken important steps to become more sustainable, implementing measures such as proactive closure strategies, restoration programs and the development of renewable energy projects. In the European Union, laws such as the Critical Raw Materials Act and the Net Zero Industry Act support the mining industry 3,4. They see it as important for the energy transition and promote more sustainable ways of working in the industry Particularly negative environmental impacts such as land degradation, scarcity of local water resources, water pollution and greenhouse gas emissions are ingrained in society’s memory. Despite these efforts, the public image has not yet changed. To change this perception, the industry must strive to better communicate its sustainable practices and the steps it is taking towards a more responsible and sustainable future, promote transparency and build trust.Digitalization, automation and electrification are driving the digital transformation in mining. However, their implementation can lead to higher capital expenditure, limiting their adoption across the industry. Furthermore, implementing new technologies can be a daunting task for any organization. Change management comes into play when introducing such disruptive technologies. It involves preparing an organization for change, potential resistance and establishing effective communication. This helps to ensure that the implementation is successful and the benefits of the new technology are maximized. Digital transformation requires well-trained, young mining, electrical, mechatronic and software engineers with a deep understanding of information systems. Unfortunately, the industry faces the enormous challenge of attracting this younger generation, who have little interest in the extraction of raw materials. The need for action is compounded by an aging active workforce heading into retirement and the forecast of increasing demand for critical minerals.In this challenging environment, the concept of Blue Mining with its constant further developments represents a promising approach. This implies a shift from a linear to a sustainably oriented circular economy. For the mining industry, this specifically means the introduction of innovative technologies, the increased recovery of materials from waste and the consistent questioning and application of circular principles along the entire life cycle of a mine. Such a change can not only reduce the environmental impact, but also contribute to economic resilience and increased social acceptance of mining.

Exposure to respirable crystalline silica (RCS) can cause serious and irreparable negative health effects, including silicosis and lung cancer. Workers in coal mines have the potential of being exposed to RCS found in dust generated by various mining processes. The silica content of respirable dust in one single mine can vary substantially over both time and location. The current monitoring approach for RCS relies on the use of traditional air sampling followed by laboratory analysis. Results generated using this approach are generally not available for several days to several weeks after sampling, and this delay prevents timely and effective intervention if needed. An alternate analytical method is needed to reduce the time required to quantify the RCS exposure of mine workers. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has developed a new method using commercially available portable infrared spectrometers for measuring RCS at the end of the sampling shift. This paper will describe the application of the new field-based RCS analytical process for coal mines, including the use of the new method with the existing Coal Mine Dust Personal Sampler Unit. In a case study conducted by NIOSH with a coal mine operator in West Virginia, field-based RCS analysis was completed at a mine site to evaluate the new technique. The RCS analysis results obtained by the field-based method in this case study showed sufficiently strong correlation with results obtained by the MSHA standard laboratory analysis method to allow the mine operator to use the field-based method for evaluating process improvements.
