Terminology. The term potash originated in "pot ashes" produced by burning wood to ashes in iron pots and then leaching out the soluble salts, chiefly potassium carbonate, from the residue. In modern usage potash is a generic term for various potassium salts used in agriculture and industry. More specifically, it denotes the oxide of potassium, K2O, and the content of potassium in ores and products is stated as weight percent of K2O present. Its salts are commonly referred to as muriate of potash, sulfate of potash, etc. The presence of an adequate supply of available potassium in the soil promotes the health and improves the quality of the plant. insures greater efficiency in photosynthesis, increases resistance to certain diseases, offsets the effect of an oversupply of nitrogen, and helps the plant to utilize soil moisture more advantageously. ("Soils and Men," U.S. Dept. of Agriculture Yearbook 1938.) Occurrence. Potassium ranks seventh among the elements in abundance. It is estimated to constitute some 2.6% of the lithosphere and is found in soluble forms in the oceans, lakes, rivers, and subsurface waters. It is also an important constituent of plant and animal life. Commercially significant accumulations of potassium salts occur in underground deposits formed in past geologic times by evaporation of ancient bodies of saltwater, inland drainage basins, and shallow sea lagoons. The potash content of such waters was the end result of weathering and leaching of insoluble potash-bearing aluminosilicates, such as feldspars, micas, leucitcs, and others. The concentrations of potassium salts in the natural brines of some lakes in the arid and semiarid regions of the continents are also important as sources of potash; the brines of the Dead Sea in Asia Minor, the Great Salt Lake in Utah, and Searles Lake in California typify such concentrations. Every continent has major potash deposits as listed in Table 1 adopted from Cawley.1

The Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago (District) is in the final phase of completing the Calumet System component of the Tunnel and Reservoir Plan (TARP) by bringing the Thornton Composite Reservoir online by 2014. The Thornton Composite Reservoir will provide nearly 30 billion liters (7.9 billion gallons) of additional storage for minimization of combined sewer overflows(CSO) and flooding in the Chicago metropolitan area. The project requires that the existing 6.7 m (22 ft) diameter Thorn Creek tunnel conveying overbank flood flows is re-routed and connected to the Thornton Composite Reservoir. This paper presents the components of the Thornton Composite Reservoir and specifically the detailed evaluation of a drill-blast tunnel. Other project features include an access shaft, control gate, energy dissipating structure, bulkheads, and live tunnel connection. The construction contract will be procured in late 2009.

Marine ferro-manganese (Fe-Mn) crusts and nodules are metal-rich chemical sediments that are archives of paleoceanographic proxies and potential metal resources and targets of deep-sea mining. Traditionally, crusts and nodules are subdivided into hydrogenetic, diagenetic, and hydrothermal types. While hydrogenetic Fe-Mn crusts are a potential resource for Co, Te, Pt, and REY, nodules are enriched in Cu, Ni, Mo, and Li, and hydrothermal deposits may be enriched in individual metals such as Mo, Ba, and Li, depending on the temperature and composition of the hydrothermal fluid. The different types of marine oxidic Fe-Mn precipitates, therefore, have different economic potential. Hence, a robust classification is not only helpful in the general geochemical characterization of such precipitates (and as such is a useful teaching tool, for example), but may also simplify the evaluation of their importance as a potential metal resource, which helps to prioritize exploration targets for deep-sea mining.

Geochemical conditions within a leaching operation are heterogeneous. This variability arises mainly from hydrological controls imparted by physical characteristics of the ore and by heterogeneous metallurgical properties at the rock-fragment and industrial heap scale. The resulting chemical conditions are responsible for stratified mineral recovery, non-uniform extraction and prolonged leach cycles. This paper presents field data from a sulfide-leaching operation which clearly demonstrate the impact of chemical heterogeneity on metal recovery and the potential use of modern measuring techniques to facilitate operational monitoring and decision making for optimization of leaching operations.

Passive-treatment systems that mitigate acid-rock drainage (ARD) from coal mines have operating since the mid-1980s. Large systems at metal mines are being contemplated. A 95L/sec (1500-gpm) capacity system is planned this year at an underground lead mine in Missouri. Mine, process and environmental managers need to understand how and why passive-treatment systems work. They must understand what operational limitations to expect, as well as the economics of construction and operation compared to the alternatives, like lime precipitation. Wetlands have been recognized as nature's method of improving water quality. Contaminant reductions can occur through the precipitation of metal hydroxides, sulfides and carbonates and pH adjustments. Local conditions, oxidation state and water and soil chemistries dictate whether these natural reactions will occur under oxidizing (aerobic) or reducing (anaerobic) conditions.

The Port Authority of Allegheny County North Shore Connector (NSC) Project involves TBM excavation of twin 690 m (2,240 lf) precast segment lined light rail tunnels through soil and rock under the Allegheny River and a narrow, downtown city street. The $435 M project is funded 80% ($348 M) by the Federal Government, 17% ($72.5 M) by the State of Pennsylvania and 3% ($14.5 M) by Allegheny County. Along the tunnel alignment are a historic building on shallow foundations, modern buildings on deep foundations, and one building constructed directly over the alignment. The project includes construction of twin 369 m (1200 lf) cut and cover concrete box tunnels and an underground station shell. This paper provides an overview of general site conditions, current project status and construction challenges for the Twin Tunnels and North Shore Light Rail Station.

Proper use of natural resources is multiple use. Underground space resulting from mineral extraction offers opportunities for deep geologic waste disposal (DGWD) which can solve many environmental problems. U.S. government projects plan to use specially mined excavations to dispose of radiotoxic and mixed waste. DGWD takes careful planning, technology transfer, and true partnership between waste generators and mine/repository operators. Using the experience, accumulated by domestic projects in preparation, and by foreign repositories in operation, U.S. mines can claim their rightful share of the growing market for DGWD.

Video technology coupled with data logging exposure monitors have been used to evaluate worker exposure to different types of contaminants. However, previous application of this technology used a stationary video camera to record the worker?s activity while the worker wore some type of contaminant monitor. These techniques are not applicable to mobile workers in the mining industry because of their need to move around the operation while performing their duties and tasks. The Helmet-CAM is a recently developed exposure assessment tool that integrates a person-wearable video recorder with a data logging dust monitor that are worn by a miner in a backpack, safety belt, or safety vest to identify areas or job tasks of elevated exposure. After a miner performs his or her job while wearing the unit, the video and dust exposure data files are downloaded to a computer and then merged together through a NIOSH-developed computer software program called EVADE (Enhanced Video Analysis of Dust Exposure). By providing synchronized playback of the merged video footage and dust exposure data, the EVADE software allows for the assessment and identification of key work areas and processes, as well as work tasks that significantly impact a worker?s personal respirable dust exposure. The Helmet-CAM technology has been tested at a number of metal/nonmetal mining operations and has proven to be a very valuable assessment tool. Mining companies wishing to use this technique can purchase a commercially available video camera and an instantaneous dust monitor to obtain the necessary data, and the NIOSH-developed EVADE software will be available for download at no cost on the NIOSH website.

On Nov. 13, 1985, Colombia's Ruiz volcano erupted, killing an estimated 25,000 people and burying several villages. Damages were estimated to be about $US300 million. The following is an account by SME member Antonio Rivera of the volcanic activity that led to the eruption. His account also includes a description of the geography and some geology of the affected area. Mining operations in the area were mostly unaffected, although some operations were forced to close until the roads leading to them could be repaired. Introduction The Ruiz volcano is located on the Central Cordillera of Colombia about 28 km (17 miles) southeast of Manizales, the capital of the state of Caldas. Ruiz is one of nine volcanoes that form a complex volcanic chain within the middle portion of the Central Cordillera. The Cordillera has 30 other volcanoes in the southern part of Colombia. Ruiz volcano Ruiz's elevation is 5200 m (17,060 ft). It is covered by an ice cap estimated to be 20 m (66 ft) thick at its summit, an area that covers 17 km2 (6.5 sq miles). Drainage is composed of several rivers that flow into the Magdalena River on the east and Cauca River on the west. The rivers flowing to the east are Guali, Azufrado, Lagunillas, and Recio. The rivers that flow to the west are Claro, Molinos, and Chinchina. There is a road from Manizales to El Refugio, a ski area located on the northeast flank of the volcano at 4800 m (15,750 ft) in elevation. The Ruiz volcanic complex was built in two stages. The first is a shield type of volcano (mainly lavas) formed about a million years ago. The second is a younger stratovolcano overlaying the ancient one. It consists of lavas and pyroclastics and was built over the past 500,000 years. Twenty-four eruptions of Ruiz are known to have occurred during the last 14,000 years. Its products mainly consist of lava flows, pyroclastic flows, mudflows (lahars), and directed lateral explosions. Historic eruptive record 1595 - Debris avalanche, blast, pyroclastic flows, mudflows, ash flows, and ash fall. 1828-1829 - Ashes (phreatic). 1831-1833 - Gas emissions and ashes. 1845 - Mudflows and pyroclastic flows. 1985 - Sept. 11- Fumarolic activity, phreatic eruption, ash fall, and small mudflows. 1985 - Nov. 13 - Ash and pyroclastic fall, major destructive mudflows (magmato-phreatic eruption). From 1845 through 1984, Ruiz volcano always had a slight fumarolic activity. It was restricted to the crater area. In November and December 1984, the fumarolic activity increased and the first ash emission and vapor-sulfur formation started. Small local earthquakes accompanied these volcanic activities. The volcano had a small erup¬tion on Sept. 11, 1985. It was manifested by phreatic explosions that ejected fragments of the vent and formed ash deposits 25 mm (1 in.) thick around an area 2.5 km (1.5 miles) from the crater. Fine material was blown by the wind and reached Manizales and neighboring areas, producing a small layer of ash up to 10 mm (0.4 in.) thick.

INTRODUCTION A number of tunnels supported and permanently lined by steel-fiber-reinforced shotcrete (SFRS) have been built in North America in the 1980s. The material is more economical than, and technically equal or superior to, conventional shotcrete using wire mesh. The design and construction of SFRS-lined tunnels is straightforward, and only a few new design principles, laboratory tests or construction equipment modifications appear necessary in order to use this material. Modern tunnel Contractors may use cyclic drill-and-blast methods on some tunnels, with intermittent shotcreting as part of an orderly cycle. The Dry Mix method is most suitable for cyclic, intermittent, relatively small-scale shotcreting. However, modern Contractors excavating tunnels continuously using large long Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs) or Roadheaders may prefer Wet Mix shotcreting on a mass production basis. In either case, the use of steel-fiber-rein¬forced shotcrete (SFRS) promotes the rapid and economical excavation of tunnels. The addition of microsilica will improve SFRS properties and reduce rebound, and is expected to become standard practice with SFRS in North America, as it now is in Scandinavia. HISTORICAL REVIEW Steel-fiber-reinforced shotcrete (SFRS) at the present time (1985) is essentially conventional shotcrete with straight or deformed steel fibers added, and in general SFRS for tunnel linings encounters the same problems that conventional shotcrete does. Competition from foreign coal producers could displace as much as 9 Mt/a (10 million stpy) of US coal bound for power plants located near waterways. But, according to a Maryland-based coal consultant, it could be worse. Theoretically, about 52 Mt (57 million st) of domestic coal could be vulnerable to imports by 1990, said Forrest Hill, of Hill & Associates of Annapolis. Hill was speaking to about 150 coal industry executives and experts at the third annual Coal Marketing Strategies Conference in November. Most were at the Denver, CO conference to pick up tips on how to sell coal in an oversupplied market. Imports threaten domestic markets Of the 200 utilities studied by Hill and his staff, 119 are situated near major waterways, he said. However, most of those waterways are not equipped to handle coal from the shipping lanes. Good news for US coal producers. But don't breathe too easily. Foreign coal still poses a major threat to domestic markets, Hill continued. The strength of the US dollar is an obvious factor. But easy access to US utilities located on waterways combined with low rates for ocean vessels give foreign producers another edge. And foreign mines are typically low cost producers. For example, Hill said Colombia's huge Cerrejon mine can deliver coal to an Illinois power plant for $47.87/t ($43.39 per st). That compares to $52.85/t ($47.95 per st) from a Kentucky coal mine. Also, Colombian coal producers can generate a cash flow even if the coal sells for $27.50/t ($25 per st). The main competition US producers face from abroad, as Hill sees it, comes from Australia, Canada, Colombia, Poland, South Africa, and, perhaps, from Venezuela. Domestic producers, however, do have some things going for them. Most US coal buyers, Hill said, "are not wild about the idea of buying foreign coal." A 10% price advantage or pressure from public utility commissions would be needed to force some of them to buy foreign coal, he said. Some of the utilities contacted said they would not commit to more than one-third of their stockpiles to a foreign source. Another advantage for US producers is that they have room in their long-term contracts to cut prices and still maintain a profit, Hill said. Railroads, too, have high profit margins written into their rate structures. They are also aware of the import threat. Therefore, they may reduce their rates accordingly to keep their markets. Marketing's role The energy price shocks of 1972 and 1976 caused major adjustments in world economics. Coal was no exception. High oil prices caused many utilities to look at less expensive coal. As the market improved, coal prices began to respond, said R. Gale Daniel, of Anaconda Minerals Co. But clean air legislation and the strengthening dollar caused havoc in the coal markets, he said. The price of oil crashed, taking with it predictions of record coal use. The result is an oversupply of coal that has led to price cutting. Now, coal marketing must be recognized in its "true leadership role," Daniel said. Marketing people must know when to use spot sales to balance production objectives and maintain cost-effective-

For the construction of tunnels and other underground structures, extraction of the exact amount of material is of paramount importance both economically and for engineering purposes. In the Sequential Support Method (NATM) immediate (sequential)and smooth support by means of shotcrete, steel arches, lattice girders and rockbolts, either singly or in combination are used; cutting of the precise (albeit sometimes of complex geometry) profile is an integral part of the method. In order to save unnecessary excavation and provide better information to the machine operator, VMT GmbH has developed a system to support precise excavation of the tunnel profile when using road headers or other partial face cutting machines. This paper outlines the principles of this system with examples from Australia, Ger-many, Sweden and Spain and will cite examples of typical savings achieved.

INTRODUCTION Measurement of certain data associated with nuclear testing necessitates the reception of waves at the instrument location which are unaffected by reflection off internal structures or tunnel surfaces. Therefore, in order to provide necessary facilities for the fielding of experiments in support of the underground nuclear testing program, the Defense Nuclear Agency (DNA) commissioned a cost and feasibility evaluation pertaining to the design and construction of large underground cavities in Rainier Mesa. The effort included research into past experience pertaining to the excavation and support of large underground caverns, assessment of the geological conditions which exist in Rainier Mesa, preliminary design of the chambers and their rock support systems based upon the geological setting, development of mining plans for the excavation of the caverns, and estimation of the cost and manpower schedule to complete construction. This paper summarizes the results of the feasibility evaluation. The investigation was limited to modified hemispherical configurations ranging in size from 24.4 to 91.4 m (80 to 300 ft) in diameter. Two cavity support systems were considered. The first employs internally installed rockbolts as the means of primary rock support while the second involves the use of annular tendon galleries located above the chambers from which primary support members are introduced prior to general excavation. The internal support configuration was considered for cavities with spans of 24.4, 36.6, 48.8, and 54.9 m (80, 120, 160, and 180 ft) while the external support configuration was considered for cavities with spans of 54.9, 73.2, and 91.4 m (180, 240 and 300 ft).

In recent times, with rare exceptions, most economically viable ore discoveries have been large, low-grade and located in remote parts of the world. Mining companies have often shown to be incapable of mitigating their social and economic impact on local communities. Sustainable development and relations can be achieved by implementing bottom-up methodologies to the top-down tools already in use by mining companies. In order to magnify the importance of enterprise facilitation as a primary method for community development, data from 25 years of community based work around the world was used. Results highlight the need for a grassroots approach to local economic and community development, which focuses on the creation of a parallel economy in communities. Using solely top-down methodologies for developing community relations is shown to be a limited resource for mining companies. There are fundamentally two dangers for mining companies: alienating the local population, resulting in militancy and lengthy legal battles to obtain a license to operate; and, being accountable for building social and economic infrastructure that are not the company?s responsibility.

UK Seabed Resources (UKSR) signed a manganese nodule exploration contract with the International Seabed Authority on 8 February 2013 for a 58,000 km2 tract on the eastern edge of the Clarion Clipperton Zone (CCZ). UKSR is a private company based in the United Kingdom and established primarily to develop the commercial potential of the CCZ deposits. This is the first of many anticipated regulatory, market and technical milestones that are requisite for (1) environmentally responsible commercial scale production of nodule derived metals and (2) generation of revenue through their sale in the global commodities market. This presentation will describe the progress made to date in this effort and an industry-based perspective on the tasks and challenges that may lie ahead.

The trapezoidal tapered ring method has made significant progress in recent years for shielded-TBM projects, excavating tunnels with high overburden, strict water tightness criteria, and multiple curve alignments. The selection of compatible tapered rings is critical for successful advancement of the tunnel, assuring efficient installation of rings, as well as prevention of ring damage and excessive leakage. Using experience from the Arrowhead Tunnels Project, this paper describes guidelines for ring selection in tunnel curves, geometric analyses that comply with criteria principals, and provides techniques developed to determine the appropriate relative key position.

Over the past few decades a great deal of effort has gone into characterizing the effects of frother type and concentration in flotation using a variety of two-phase techniques. Whilst useful and informative, this research still does not assist in the selection of suitable frothers for three-phase industrial-scale froths. This paper investigates the effects of frother type and concentration in a three-phase industrial froth. The objective was to determine if progress could be made in terms of understanding the behavior of frothers in flotation and understanding how they affect the sub-processes occurring in the pulp and froth phases and, ultimately, the metallurgical performance of a flotation cell.

Alternative methods of analyzing data acquired by the Morenci copper concentrator process control instrument-computer system are presented. Experimental measures of ore characteristics, for proposed feed forward control, are introduced. These include on-line indexes of ore hardness, ore density, ore dusting, and ore color. Comparison of metallurgical results before and after computerized process control implementation, allowing for differing ore grades, oxidation, hardness, and fineness of grind, also is described.
