"SummaryAir velocity distribution surveys on four mechanized longwall faces are presented and discussed. Although there are discernible patterns in the velocity distribution, there are wide differences in distribution in the cases examined. This can be attributed to differences in mining and face geometry. An important factor is air leakage into the goaf.IntroductionOver the past two years several intensive air velocity surveys have been carried out in West Virginia coal mines as part of a programme aimed at understanding dust transport mechanisms on mechanized longwall faces. These are presented here and some of the patterns of velocity distribution are discussed.Ventilation survey methodologyThe air velocity vector consists of three mutually perpendicular subvectors; the vertical subvector is directed toward the roof, one of the horizontal subvectors is parallel to the coal face and the other pointing to the gob. The air velocity which was measured in this paper is the horizontal subvector parallel to the coal face.To record the velocity distributions at the longwall faces, the surveying stations and the surveying points were established as follows.(1) The first station usually was set at the third support from the headentry T-junction. Within the first few supports, the air coming from the intake airway encounters a sharp right-angle turn at the T-junction, and forms a turbulent region close to the coal face. The intake air in this region is also influenced by the motors that drive the face conveyer. But when the air reaches the different. But for the same face the number was the same. The main air-travelling area was divided into six to 12 equally sized sub-areas, and each surveying point was situated approximately at the centre of the sub-area.The velocity survey was carried out by two persons, one reading the meter and the other taking down the readings. A complete survey at one station took about 5-8 min. Usually, the dimension of the cross-sectional area was measured during that time.A third person used the smoke tubes to observe the following: (I) the air movement patterns at different locations; (2) the extent and the direction of the air leakage; and (3) the machines' influence on the main airflow. At the same time he observed and recorded the roof conditions and the compactness of the roof-caving in the gob."

Data were obtained by the writer from a number of the large coul-mine operators in Illinois, on the consumption and cost of timber used in their mines and the quality of the timber now being used as compared with former years. This information supplemented by comparative date for previous years published in bulletins of the filinois Coal Mining Investigation series, and other sources, is presented below. This survey is part of a cooperative study with the . S. Forest Service, of the mine timber situation, with particular regard to the economies to be derived by better selection, preparation, and storage of timber, and especially treatment with preservatives to prolong the life. Geo. S. Rice, chief mining engineer of the J. S. Bureau of Mines, under whose general direction the work was done, gave valuable advice and criticism. R. B. Miller, State Forester, contributed helpful data which he had recent- ly obtained in an independent study of the mine-timber situation in Illinois.

This digest of Brazilian mining law is based upon Decree 4265 of January 15 , 1921 , and its regulation , Decree 15,211 of December 28 , 1921. Unless otherwise stated , the references are to the latter exclusively , since it includes practically everything contained in the law itself . It should be borne in mind that these regulations do not necessarily apply to mines other than those on private and national land . Each State of the Union is free , in respect to State land , to regulate or interpret the national mining law , which is very general in its terms , as it sees fit . Whether such local regulations are anywhere in force with respect to the law of 1921 the bureau has not been informed . Article 64 of the Constitution indicates that only such portions of territory as are required for the defense of the frontiers , for fortifications , military constructions , and federal railways belong to the Union . Lessees of such lands , unless in debt to the Treasury , have preferential prospecting rights for one year ( art . 28 ) . This carries with it the right to work any mines discovered (Law , art . 12 ) .

Sections 120 and 121 of Article XI. Fire Control, of a proposed Mine Safety Law in preparation, to be used as desired and when approved by any State, contains these provisions: After the adoption of these regulations, no mine operator shall erect any nonfireproof structure within 50 feet of any mine entrance. or airway. Every operating mine having nonfireproof structures within 50 feet of any mine entrance or airway, except headframes necessary for hoisting, shall have such structures fireproofed or removed and replaced with fireproof structures within six months of the adoption of these regulations. Before reopening, mines idle at the time of the adoption of these regulations shall have all non- fireproof structures fireproofed, removed, or replaced with fire- proof structures as required by the foregoing sentence. Upon receipt of the written statement of a mine operator that the fireproofing of existing structures is impracticable, the chief mining engineer (of the State commission) shall satisfy himself as to the abouracy of the statement. If he concurs that fireproofing is impracticable, and if at the same time he holds the opinion that adequate protection can be provided otherwise by such procedure, he shall have authority to issue a written permit for the substitution of fireproof door at or near portals of mine openings and collars: of shafts. Such doors shall fit as nearly gas-tight as possible. and shall be installed in such a way that the mouths of mine open- ings can be closed readily from outside of structures. The effec- tiveness of such permit may be made contingent upon the operator's continued compliance with any additional precautions which are necessary in the chief mining engineer's opinion to protect the lives of miners.

A variety of dynamic failure cases with regional impact were described at a bump symposium held in 1958. These types of events, while rare, are of particular interest because their ability to impact a large area has disaster potential. These cases can be grouped into two broad classes of events by mechanism. These are (1) slip along steeply dipping faults and (2) fracturing of strong strata above, or below, the coal seam. Both failure modes produce dynamic or ?shock? loads on the perimeter (roof, rib, floor) of mine openings. Special consideration should be given to these failure modes in planning of deep coal mines since their occurrence is not within the professional experience of many contemporary workers, and their potential is not evaluated by many of the analysis tools commonly used to evaluate hazards in coal mine plans.

This report of work by the Federal Bureau of Mines has two primary objectives: A survey of the present status and usefulness of the minimum ignition-energy concept, and the presentation of recent data that are believed to bear on the safety problem associated with the ignition of combustible gases by electric discharges. The minimum ignition-energy concept has widespread applicability, especially to safety. The primary obstacle in making theoretical calculations of the requisite ignition energy is the lack of data on chemical kinetics and flame hydrodynamics. The new data on electrical ignition are representative of the great increase in knowledge that can be achieved by proper utilization of geometrical and electrical characteristics associated with the ignition source. CONCEPT OF MINIMUM IGNITION ENERGY The basic concept of a minimum ignition energy (the minimum amount of energy required to cause ignition) follows quite naturally from general physical principles and from the stability (lack of chemical reaction) of the gaseous mixture under the initial conditions. It also follows that if, as a first condition, lossless, instantaneous, and spatially localized energy can be injected and, as a second condition, the relaxation time for conversion of this type of energy to the type required for the reaction is short compared to some characteristic time scale of the ignition phenomenon, the energy requirements will be essentially independent of the type of energy source. Even if condition one cannot be fulfilled, it is sometimes possible to estimate the energy content of the gas required for ignition, and under these circumstances, condition one is fulfilled in effect. There are several instances where results can be interpreted for circumstances that effectively satisfy conditions one and two; these will be discussed later.

Calcareous rocks, of which the principal varieties are marble and lime¬stone, are used extensively for building and ornamental purposes. Onyx and travertine, subdivisions of these groups, are sufficiently distinctive in origin and use to merit separate classification. The purpose of this paper is to define the terms "onyx" and "travertine" and to describe the occurrences and uses of the materials bearing these names. ORIGIN AND CHARACTER Confusion exists in the use of the word "onyx." True onyx is a banded chalcedony, a form of silicon dioxide related to jasper, agate, and flint. Calcium carbonate is commonly deposited from solution in successive layers of varying color closely resembling onyx, and for this reason such calcareous rock is also called "onyx." "The presence of agglomerated particles in airborne dust in coal mines has been confirmed by SEM examination of static samples collected on substrates. In addition, the effect of agglomerated particles on the performance of cascade impactors and cyclone-type personal samplers has been studied. Simple procedures have been developed for evaluating the extent of agglomeration in air-borne dust by comparing the observed size-selectivity of the sampling devices with that expected under idealized conditions. Applications of these techniques in the laboratory and in underground mines are discussed.INTRODUCTIONAirborne dust is invariably present in mine atmospheres. Particle size is a primary factor in determining the behavior of the dust, its effects on miners' health and the effectiveness of dust control measures. Obviously, agglomeration of the dust particles can have important effects on: ""natural"" dust removal processes such as settling• the use of water sprays etc., for dust control• pulmonary deposition characteristicsIn addition, the presence of agglomerates could influence the effective toxicity of the dust. For example, ultrafine particles are often thought to be relatively unimportant in the development of respiratory ailments because of their low deposition efficiency. However, the latter could be substantially increased if such particles were present in larger agglomerates. It is by no means obvious that there should be significant agglomeration of the airborne dust in a mine atmosphere. In fact, calculations based on the classical coagulation theories indicate that, at the kinds of dust concentrations that exist even in what would be regarded as “very dusty"" atmospheres, the coagulation half-time* .should be of the order of weeks or even months. On this basis, agglomeration would be expected to be essentially negligible. On the other hand, laboratory experiments (Polat et al., 1991) have revealed very extensive agglomeration in the airborne dust released during the crushing of individual coal and mineral particles. It is postulated that such agglomeration occurs immediately at the point of dust generation. In other words, many of the fine fragments produced on fracture are never completely separated from their neighbors."

Since man first mined underground, there has been need for adequate illumination; this need has never been fully supplied. At first, suitable lamps were not available. Gradually they have been developed, but along with that development the need for better and better lamps has continued owing to the following conditions and factors: 1. Increasing hazards from gas and dust ignitions. 2. The speeding of operations with mechanized mining, which necessitates greater visibility. 3. A demand that cleaner coal be loaded, which requires higher levels of illumination. 4. The cost of compensation for injuries that has created a demand for better illumination and safer lamps. Use of better lamps has been retarded by: 1. Prejudice and resistance to change on the part of the workers in some districts. 2. The cost and upkeep of the lamps. 3. The present types of lamps, while a great improvement over the old lamps, do not entirely fulfill the requirements for a safe and efficient light for underground workers.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) in partnership with Strata Products tested the sealing capability of Ventstop®? as part of an ongoing mine fire control and suppression research program. Ventstop®? is a multi-purpose, inflatable device that is produced by Minvent Solutions and is available world wide for use in the metal and nonmetal mining industry. Ventstop®? is also used in the Australian coal industry as a temporary ventilation control device. The device can be quickly deployed, is reusable and can be placed in horizontal and vertical mine voids to control dust, fumes and smoke. Deployment, multi-day inflation and air leakage tests were conducted at the NIOSH Lake Lynn Laboratory to determine the capability and limitations of Ventstop®? in a simulated coal mine setting. During the tests, Ventstop®? was also subjected to low level forces of a nearby methane gas ignition. It is thought that Ventstop®? could be used by the US coal mining industry to temporarily close an underground mine area in response to a fire or spontaneous combustion heating event, to temporarily redirect mine ventilation during longwall equipment moves or during stopping construction. This paper describes this inflatable temporary mine sealing technology and presents the results of the NIOSH tests. Researchers at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) are studying the time-dependent response of rock stressed along weakness planes. The objective is to improve mine safety by reducing the number of roof falls that cause injuries and fatalities to miners. Researchers conducted direct-shear tests on mudstone overcored from a coal mine roof. Results showed frictional strength weakens with displacement along the shearing planes. Results of direct-shear creep tests also showed time-dependent deformation. Test measurements were compared to classical analytical models. Results suggest that risk of roof collapse may be decreased through layout and support design to reduce creep rates and thus slow progression toward failure.

During the past quarter century, coal mine geologists have evolved from providing a qualitative description of drill core and coal reserves into quantitative geotechnical specialists who bridge the gap between geology and engineering. In the late 1970’s and early 1980’s, hazard prediction mapping was in its infancy. At best, hazard maps identified rudimentary structures and conditions such as stream valley locations, sandstone/shale transition zones, and lineaments. A “technical disconnect” had existed between geologists and mining engineers as each profession operated largely independent of each other. Engineers did not readily integrate geology and geologic conditions, with the exception of coal thickness, into mine planning. Geologists were relied upon for reserve estimates and did not participate in mine planning or design. The employment and market slump of the 1980’s and 1990’s combined with mining more challenging reserves mandated that this gap be bridged and forced geologists to learn to speak more “numerically” to engineers so they could be understood. The purpose of this paper is to describe the procedures and thought processes used by coal mine geologists when determining various mineability and reserve extraction feasibility issues. The paper will also address underground geologic hazard mapping and prediction techniques. To achieve these objectives, the opinions and experiences of leading coal mine geologists, geotechnical and strata control specialists across the United States were solicited.

This paper describes mining and milling practices at the San Xavier mine of the Eagle- Picher Mining & Smelting Co. in Pima County , Ariz . It is one of a series being prepared by the Bureau of Mines on mining methods in various mining districts of the United States . The mine and the mine surface buildings are situated in sec . 11 , T. 17 S. , R. 12 E. , in the Sierrita Mountains in Pima County , 20 miles south by southwest from Tucson via the San Xavier Mission and Twin Buttes road ( fig . 1). A well-maintained dirt road continues southward toward Twin Buttes for 4 miles and then branches off northeasterly for 5-1/2 miles to Sahuarita , where the concentrator of the Eagle - Picher Mining & Smelting Co. is situated on the west slope of the Santa Cruz River Valley . Tho mill is connected by a railroad branch to the main line of the Southorn Pacific Railroad between Tucson and Nogales . It is generally assumed that the San Xavier silver - lead deposits became known to the Jesuits and Spaniards in the early part of the eighteenth century . However , no extensive mining operations were conducted by the Jesuits in what is now Arizona before the middle of the eighteenth century . The completion of the Southern Pacific Railroad from Los Angeles to El Paso in 1881 marked the beginning of intense activity in mining throughout the southern part of the State . The San Xavier mine produced 6,000,000 pounds of lead , considerable zinc ( exact figures not available ) and $200,000 in silver from 1897 to 1918 . The Eagle- Picher Mining & Smolting Co. re- opened the San Xavier mine in 1943 and built a 175-ton concentrator at Sahuarita . The capacity of the plant was increased in 1944 to 500 tons in order to take in custom ore . The surface rocks at the San Xavier mine are , in great part , of sedimentary origin . Limestones of various ages comprise most of the exposed sedimentaries , some quartzites and shales also being present . The sedimentaries rest upon coarse - textured , intrusive , igneous rocks comprised mainly of granite and granodiorite . The San Xavier deposit is composed of galena , sphalerite , chalcopyrite , and pyrite . Generally the individual ore bodies are small , discontinuous , and occur as irregularly spaced shoots or lenses . The present mine workings extend horizontally a distance of 2,700 feet and vertically 900 feet . Owing to ground weight, all mine openings are timbered on the levels and all stopes are square- setted and waste -filled .

The current rulemaking on mine illumination makes it necessary for mine personnel to have an understanding of the behavior of light. They must be able to understand many terms that are new to the industry and must be familiar with the use of various types of photometers. With this knowledge, the enforcement criteria for mines can be understood and compliance can be maintained.

Mine closing methods should be carefully considered. If not properly sealed, an abandoned mine may continue to produce acid water. Since 60 to 90 percent of the total acid discharged from all coal mines is from abandoned mines,(58) some states require that provisions for sealing be contained in the mining permit application. Closing an operation to prevent harmful mine drainage into nearby runs and streams is a subject of much concern to states as a result of continuing problems from long abandoned mines which were improperly closed.

Since 1969, the Department of Interior, Bureau of Mines, has carried out communications research. Research has been directed toward developing emergency and nonemergency mine communications. This paper gives an overview of the progress made in the last two years. Particular emphasis is given to the overall program, noise and signal measurements, systems studies, guidelines, products, and demonstrations now being carried on in operating mines.
