Petroleum production was the principal component of the mineral industry, followed by cement production and some salt output. The French Central Fund for Economics Cooperation loaned $9.15 million2 to the Communauté Electrique du Benin (CEB), which served Benin and Togo, toward financing the construction of a dam on the Mono River at Nangbeto, Togo. The dam was to supply hydroelectric power to reduce the energy dependence of the two countries and to irrigate crops. Nine other international financial organizations, including the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (World Bank). the African Development Bank, the Arab Bank for African Economic Development, and the French Aid and Cooperation Fund, contributed to the estimated $140 million cost of the dam. The CEB also was to contribute to the financing. Contracts amounting to $60 million already had been awarded to West German and Canadian firms. The dam was expected to be completed in 1987.

This paper reports measurements of low-temperature heat capacities and entropies at 298.15° K. of two copper ferrites (CUFe204 and CU0.75Fe2.2504). These substances, which occur in copper-smelting slags, have not been sujected to any previous direct thermodynamic investigation. The two copper ferrites are spinel minerals of the variate class. In previous investigations similar data were obtained for 13 other spinel minerals -7 of the normal class and 6 of the variate class. The entropies at 298.15° K. of these minerals have been compiled and revised as necessary in the light of present knowledge regarding structural randomness; entropy values, recommended for use in thermodynamic calculations, are listed.

Metal production rates of 42 to 45 tons per day were obtained with hollow-core anthracite briquets in an experimental blast furnace. Tuyere pressures were about the same for both coke and briquet operations, but from 150 to 175 pounds more of briquets were required per ton of metal than were needed with coke. Furnace operations were comparatively smooth, furnace hanging occurring less often than in previous tests with anthracite briquets. Dust production was substantially higher than with coke, however, and metal quality could not be controlled by corrective burdening and moisture control.

Improve the safety of mine workers by developing a means of forecasting impending roof falls in underground mines. Approach The Bureau of Mines, through in-house and contract research, has developed the Roof Fall Warning Device. This battery-operated, portable electronic system forecasts roof falls by detecting and interpreting high-frequency rock noise, The technology has shown potential for detecting stress-related failures in a variety of underground environments. How It Works All geologic materials produce high-frequency acoustic emissions when they encounter an increase in stress. These ultrasonic frequency range events ( >20kHz) are well above the audible range of human hearing, very small in amplitude and duration, and can only be detected with sophisticated electronic equipment.

The empirical nature of this investigation required measurements of variables under operating conditions in underground coal mines. The variables to be measured were based on the postulated character¬istics of the loading function, as described in the previous chapter. One class of variables presumed to influence the loading function are geological variables. Accordingly, the sites for data collection were selected in different bituminous coal seams at dispersed locations in order that variation in geological conditions would exist. Seven mines in central and western Pennsylvania and one mine in northern West Virginia were selected as data collection sites. Five different coal seams were represented by these mines. The remaining classes of variables - geometric, mechanical, and procedural - were measured as they occurred in the mines. A description of the measurements, and the conversion of these measurements to forms which could be-analyzed for effect on the loading function is given. Mining Dimensions At the underground working face, the following dimensions were measured: a. Thickness of coal excavated. b. Thickness of shale excavated. c. Total height excavated. d. An environment monitoring and communication system has been installed in the Bruceton Mine, and research is under way to improve mine safety. Standard day-to-day mine communications are available, along with additional systems installed to permit experimentation with wireless radio, through-the-earth phones, along-the-roof paging, and mine face machinery communications. Research is continuing and the essential concepts for a dependable whole mine communication system, providing simple environment monitoring, improved day-to-day communications and post-disaster communications, will be demonstrated in a larger mine with about 900 feet of overburden.

Two methods for electrowinning tungsten from wolframite [(Fe,Mn)W04] were investigated. The first method, direct electrowinning from wolframite concentrate dissolved in molten salt mixtures composed essentially of various combinations of sodium phosphates, sodium borates, and sodium halides, yielded impure products. The second method was electrowinning from a halide-tungstate melt that was obtained from a high-temperature, two-phase extraction of tungstic oxide (W03) from wolframite. Electrolysis in electrolytes prepared from addition of sodium metaphosphate (NaPO3) and boric oxide (B2O3) to the halide-tungstate melt produced tungsten metal of 99.9 percent purity. Tungsten carbide (WC) was electrodeposited from the halide-tungstate melt when the melt was adjusted to contain 82 mole-percent NaCI and 6.0 mole-percent each of W03, sodium metaborate (Na2B204), and caustic soda (NaOH).

This study presents a reservoir modeling approach to investigate the relative effects of different coalbed parameters on the migration of methane into development entries. A base coalbed reservoir model of a three-entry development section, where grids were dynamically controlled to simulate the advance of mining at a constant section advance rate, was created and calibrated for a Pittsburgh Coalbed mine in the Southwestern Pennsylvania section of the Northern Appalachian Basin. The values of coalbed parameters were varied to evaluate their effects on predicted methane emissions for various development distances. The results of these parametric simulations were then used to derive linear expressions relating these parameters to methane emissions into the workings. These models were analyzed to assess their significance and adequacy for predictive purposes. This work shows that coupling reservoir simulations with linear modeling yield a technique that can be applicable to different coalbeds. The reservoir parameters used by the linear models (coalbed thickness, pressure, sorption time constant, Langmuir parameters, permeability) can be determined by running relatively simple laboratory tests, such as adsorption equilibrium and permeability determination, on coal samples obtained either from the mining operation or from the exploratory boreholes drilled ahead of mining.

Improve the dust control effectiveness of dry collection systems on surface coal mine drills. Approach Use a dust pelletizer to convert the respirable dust particles discharged by the dry collector into dust pellets that present no health hazard. Background Blasthole drills are well-known sources of respirable dust that can contain significant amounts of quartz. The drills frequently use a dry cyclone-filter type collector that can obtain dust reductions theoretically greater than 95 pct. However, surface mine drills using dry collectors typically have three major dust sources that significantly reduce the overall effectiveness of the collection system: (1) the dust collector dump cycle, (2) drill shroud leakage, and (3) leakage around the drill stem seal in the drill table.

The Bureau of Mines determined the enthalpies of Ni3S2 relative to 298.15 K to provide new thermodynamic data for advancement of mineral science and technology. Enthalpies were measured with a copper-block calorimeter from 298.15 to 1,197 K. A solid-solid transition was found at 834±1 K, with an isothermal heat absorption of 13.32 kcal/mol. The temperature of this solid-solid transition was accurately measured by differential scanning calorimetry. Because Ni3S2 does not melt congruently, the heat of fusion of 4.70 kcal/mol was obtained by extrapolation of enthalpy measurements from the solid and liquid phases to approximately 1,064 K. Tabulated values are given for the relative standard enthalpy, heat capacity, entropy, and Gibbs energy function between 298.15 and 1,800 K. Enthalpies are also given in equation form and combined with data from the literature to derive values of standard enthalpies of formation and Gibbs energies of formation. Similar calculations were made for the reaction of crystalline and liquid nickel with gaseous diatomic sulfur for Ni3S-2(c, l).

The Bureau of Mines conducted laboratory and small-scale, continuous tests of weathered mica-pegmatite ores from Randolph County, Ala., to determine the feasibility of recovering commercial-grade mica concentrates by flotation. Two flotation methods were used in continuous tests for recovery of mica. One method utilized acid-cationic flotation for the recovery of coarse mica and alkaline-anionic-cationic flotation for recovering fine mica. This method yielded mica concentrates containing 98.6 percent mica with a recovery of 85.9 percent. The other method was based on the Bureau-developed alkaline-anionic-cationic method, and yielded concentrates containing 97.5 percent mica with a recovery of over 90 percent. In both methods, preconcentration of the ground ore on a Humphreys spiral was employed to reject over half of the feed in a product virtually free of mica.

The Bureau of Mines dried and carbonized two wood wastes, one softwood (redwood) and one hardwood (oak), using continuous, vertical entrainment techniques previously developed for use with coal. It was demonstrated that these techniques are readily applicable to wood waste and that appreciable changes in the yields of carbonization products can be obtained by varying operating conditions. A limited amount of experimental work was done on briquetting the charcoals. Firm briquets were formed with oak charcoal, although greater quantities of starch binder than used commercially for kiln-produced charcoal were required. Redwood charcoal did not briquet successfully under the test conditions employed.

The Bureau of Mines investigated the precipitation strengthening of lead¬-base alloys containing 0.5 through 4 weight-percent combined Cd plus Sb. The Cd and Sb were alloyed in a 1-to-1 atomic ratio which maintained compositions along the quasi-binary section Pb-CdSb. Tensile properties, creep rates, and stress-rupture values were obtained on alloys in the aged condition. The highest tensile strength was observed in an alloy of Pb-3 CdSb, After aging for 6 months at 90°±3° F, this alloy had a mean tensile strength of 8,950 psi with 15-percent elongation. An aged alloy of Pb-1 CdSb exhibited a steady state creep rate of 1.2 X 10-3 percent per day at a stress of 500 psi and a temperature of 90°±3° F. Times to rupture at stresses up to 4,000 psi and at a temperature of 90°±3° F were obtained for some compositions.

In this Bureau of Mines report, use of the photoemission of electrons to produce electric charges for the electrostatic separation of sonic dispersed minerals, which had previously been ground to pass a 43µ-opening sieve, is demonstrated. It appears that many of the oxides, carbonates, sulfides, and arsenides will respond to photoemission. Minerals least responsive are the oxides of silicon, the oxides of aluminum, and minerals that have a high concentration of these oxides. Although several synthetic ore mixtures did not yield to complete separation in a one-stage operation, it is probable that preliminary neutralization of the initial electric charges produced by powder dispersion will provide complete separation. That the separation can be carried out in air and without the use of reagents or heating, which are required in the present practice of electrostatically separating coarse granular feeds, is of special significance.

High-temperature enthalpy and X-ray powder diffraction studies were con-ducted on aluminum sulfide (Al2S3) as part of the Bureau of Mines effort to provide new data for the advancement of mineral technology consistent with environmental preservation and energy conservation. Relative enthalpies were measured with a copper-block calorimeter from 298.15 to 879 K. Tabulated values are listed for heat capacity, entropy, Gibbs energy functions, and relative enthalpies between 298.15 and 900 K. Enthalpies were also given in the form of an equation and combined with published data to calculate standard enthalpies of formation and Gibbs energies of formation for reactions of crystalline aluminum with crystalline, liquid, and gaseous diatomic sulfur. The hexagonal, rhombohedral, and cubic phases of Al2S3 were identified by X-ray powder diffraction studies, and the indexed powder diffraction patterns of these phases are given. The hexagonal phase was stable to about 852 K and was partially converted to the rhombohedral form at 879 K.

Methane-flow and pressure data taken from a mine in the Pocahontas No. 3 coalbed are compared with flow rates from lump coal obtained in laboratory experiments. From this, it is concluded that the main source of gas is the intact coalbed rather than a "crushed zone" near the working face. The permeability and sorption capacity of the intact coalbed are calculated and gas emission rates are theoretically accounted for.

Provide roof to floor closure rate measurements during underground mining, especially retreat mining of coal pillars, thereby helping the miners predict an imminent roof fall. Approach An electronic device and rugged potentiometric extensometer were developed to provide a means fur measuring total closure and the rate of closure. How It Works An intrinsically safe, battery operated instrument is enclosed in a rugged, hand carried field case. The unit is constructed using low-power, integrated circuits to provide minimal battery drain. Two digital Light Emitting Diode (LED) readouts are used; one displays the rate, the other displays the total closure. The unit will measure one extensometer continuously or two extensometers alternately. Two potentiometric extensometers with a closure measurement range of 6 inches are attached to the readout unit. Improve the safety and comfort of operators of large mining equipment. Approach Develop an improved driver restraint system that is easy to use, reliable, and cost-effective, while providing increased protection in the event of a collision or rollover. The Novel Restraint System There are several problems associated with conventional lap-belt type restraint systems. Among these are: restriction of movement, lack of comfort, and fear of entrapment. Standard seatbelts become dirty and oily from lying on the vehicle cab floor and can ruin a driver's clothes. Some haulage equipment may not even have seatbelts available to drivers since they are sometimes removed during maintenance activities or as a result of vandalism. Recognizing a need to address such problems by providing a more acceptable means of driver restraint, the Bureau of Mines designed and fabricated a novel vest-type restraint system. The vest is designed to be worn during a driver's 8-hour shift and would be issued much like safety glasses, hard hats and safety shoes, thus becoming part of the operator's individual protective equipment and assuring that each vehicle has a restraint system when in operation. This paper presents a general overview of the Bureau of Mines' programs in the areas of operational and post-disaster communications. These programs encompass both hardware developments and system evaluations. Topics discussed include a new visual paging system compatible with existing pager phone lines, a means of modifying commercially avail able pager phones to permit selective paging and message leaving, a multiplexed telephone system that uses twisted shielded pair and requires no central control, medium frequency hardware developments, and a manual for mine communications. Research has continued in the area of post-disaster location and communications. This research is based on seismic and electro- magnetic techniques. Each has been extensively studied and field tested to better understand its ability to perform effectively. A brief description is given of the post-disaster program. Results are promising and provide insight into future areas of research.

The Bureau of Mines investigated the presence and extent of methane accumulations in mine roof cavities using a full-scale mine model. Methane was released at a constant rate into the roof of a cavity built onto a 700-ft wind tunnel. Two box-shaped roof cavities were used in the study: one had a volume of 114.7 cu ft; and the other had a volume of 57.3 cu ft. Methane concentration was measured at 28 sampling points in the cavities using 21 different combinations of gas emission rates and air velocities. Brattice hung in the cavity helped reduce methane concentrations without auxiliary ventilation. It was also found that the effective ventilation rate increased by a factor of 40 in the large cavity and by a factor of 20 in the small cavity when air velocity was increased from 100 to 600 fpm.
