Develop a reliable, portable device for non-destructively testing the support integrity of a friction rock support (commonly referred to as a Split Set ). Approach The friction rock support, used to support mine roof and ribs, is a slotted tube driven into a drilled hole of smaller diameter. Upon installation, the tube is compressed radially. The amount of compression is a function of the hole diameter, the strength of the host rock, and the properties of the split set itself. A simple lightweight self-contained device was developed to determine the pull-out resistance of the friction rock supports in-situ, based on measurements of the tube's deformation. The tester measures the com-pressed internal volume of the slotted tube, which has been found to provide an estimate of the support's resistance to pull out. How It Works The tester consists of a pump and expander sections. The expander sections are made from an elastomer membrane which is stretched over two cores, each one inch in diameter and twelve inches long. The expanders are connected by a flexible coupler so that they can fit any alignment of the support.

The source and petrographic analysis of each sample are given. Included are values for isomorphous series of minerals showing wide ranges of composition and for a few high-purity synthetic minerals.

In 1985, at the request of the Bureau of Land Management, the U.S. Bureau of Mines studied a portion of the 110,000 acre Massacre Rim Wilderness Study Area (CA-020-1013). The area studied, containing 23,260 acres, is located in northwest Washoe County, Nevada, about 25 miles west of Vya adjoining the Charles Sheldon National Wildlife Refuge. Basalt caps older tuffaceous sedimentary rocks in an area that contains no claims or prospects. No mineral resources were identified during this investigation.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines has designed and built an inexpensive, weatherproof, temperature-controlled cabinet to provide temporary housing for analytical instrumentation. The cabinet consists of an inverted Styrofoam ice chest, an electric fan for air circulation, and a proportional temperature controller equipped with a thermistor sensor and a light bulb as the heater. The cabinet provides a constant-temperature environment for a moisture analyzer and a strip chart recorder when outside temperatures range from -SO to 21° c.

Develop a technology for producing high-quality hake graphite from the steelmaking waste known as kish. Approach Treat the waste kish as an ore and apply mineral processing techniques of physical beneficiation and chemical purification to produce a range of graphite products com¬petitive with the natural mineral. Background Graphite is a naturally occurring form of carbon with a unique combination of properties that make it indispensable in a very wide range of industrial and consumer applications. It has high electrical and thermal conductivity and remains stable to extremely high temperatures It has a low coefficient of friction and is nearly impervious to corrosion. The steel industry is dependent on graphite in clay-, magnesia-, and alumina-bonded refractories for crucibles, bricks, facings, and coatings. Electrical uses include graphite brushes in motors and generators, and electrodes in batteries. The transportation industry needs graphite for clutch and brake linings, and all industries depend on graphite in seals, gaskets, lubricants, and coatings. The consumer sees graphite in composite plastics and in the common pencil. As with all natural minerals, the availability of graphite is diminishing and costs are rising as quality decreases.

A mineral survey of a 13,525-acre portion of the 21,875-acre Owyhee Canyon Wilderness Study Area in northern Nevada was conducted by the U.S. Bureau of Mines in 1984. Two samples from sand and gravel deposits in the study area contained minor placer gold typical of the Owyhee River area. The gold-bearing gravels are too low grade or of insufficient volume to support commercial placer mining operations. The sand and gravel deposits might have minor local construction uses.

The internal friction of eight single crystals of magnesium with orienta-tion ranging from 10° to 84° was measured at 33.5 kc and 272° C, and the results were interpreted in terms of the pinned-dislocation model proposed by Granato and Lucke. Results show that the strain-amplitude-dependent decrement varies with orientation in a manner predictable by the G-L model. Different values of strain-amplitude-independent decrement were observed at different orientation angles, but correlation with the theory was not conclusive. Problems and steps for further study are discussed.

Low-temperature distillation tests at 200°, 350°, and 500° C. were made on a subbituminous coal from Boulder County, Colo., and a subbituminous coal from Weld County Colo., in connection with a survey of carbonizing properties of American coals 4/ and investigations of their chemical and physical properties. 5/ The coal represented by the sample from Weld County was reported to give off combustible volatile matter at unusually low temperatures when placed on a fuel bed. The yields of tar and oil and the composition of the as from this coal, as obtained in the distillation tests, did not confirm this report. These yields and the gas composition of the Weld County coal differed but little from those obtained from the coal from Boulder County. Both coals yielded tar and gas in amounts considered to be normal for coals of their rank.

"This paper presents an analysis of the effect of the dynamics of bit wear on dust generation. Two surveys have been conducted in order to assess the mechanism and type of bit wear and to evaluate the impact of bit wear on the productivity of the continuous miners. Used bits were collected from the underground coal mines and these used bits were utilized in laboratory coal cutting. The effect of bit wear on dust generation has been quantified and its impacted on dust generation and ventilation system has been exemplified.INTRODUCTION Research has reduced the prevalence of Coal Workers Pneumoconiosis from 15 to 5 percent according to NIOSH reports (Breslin 1982). However CWP still have not been eliminated as a hazard to mine workers. To prevent coal workers from having black lung MSHA has established a very strict standard for coal mine operations (2.0 mg/m3 with silica content equal to or less than 0.1 mg/m3,). There are numerous coal operations still experiencing great difficulty with meeting the 2mg/m3 dust standard. Among these are the longwall sections and continuous mining sections. In order to meet the rising demand of energy and coal, the number of longwall operations and continuous mining operations would have to be increased. Thus a long term research commitment is required to develop basic solutions that are more generic and greater benefit to the mining and mineral industry.In continuous-mining operations, the miners are exposed to the dust produced during the fragmentation of the coal from the face plus the dust produced during loading and transferring of the coal. The fragmentation process generates most of the respirable dust. The amount of dust generated during fragmentation depended on the coal properties, cutting parameters and cutting bit configuration. Bit wear changes bit configuration, therefore, it also affects dust generation. Bit wear can be defined as the removal of material from surface as a result of mechanical action. In soft coal mines bit wear may not be a serious problem but in hard coal seams bit wear is very significant. In addition, as the good coal seams are depleted, the operators are mining thin seams and the seams with rock partings. During cutting these seams operators are sometimes forced to cut roof and floor rock or rock partings which result in more rapid wear of bits."

The Bureau of Mines, as part of the strategic minerals program, mapped and sampled the accessible mine workings. The work failed to reveal appreciable copper values or evidence of additional ore deposits.

This report summarizes the results of laboratory testing of copper-bearing magnetite ore from the Poorman, Bush & Brown, and Copper Center deposits, Kasaan Peninsula, Prince of Wales Island, southeastern Alaska. The ores contain minor amounts of chalcopyrite and pyrite. Intimate association of these sulfides with magnetite necessitates fine grinding for adequate liberation and rejection of copper and sulfur and for the production of high-grade iron concentrate low in objectionable impurities. Laboratory tests indicated that the optimum results can be obtained by flotation of ore ground to minus-100-mesh, with subsequent wet magnetic separation treatment of the flotation tailing. A summary of results obtained by this treatment of the three samples tested is shown in table 1.

[During the past several years a great deal of discussion has centered around the question of the permissible limit of sulphur content in fuels for automotive and aviation motors. Under certain conditions of operation, sulphur in motor fuels causes the formation of corrosive substances which attach bearings, wrist pins, and other parts of engines. On the other hand, in making gas¬oline from certain stocks, the gasoline fraction normally contains a relatively large proportion of sulphur compounds. By the generally used processes of reducing the sulphur content, a significant part of the gasoline fraction is lost as motor fuel, and added expenses are entailed for chemicals, labor, and other process costs. This condition has been an economic burden to some refiners of high-sulphur crudes. In some instances the treating losses have been rather severe and the treating costs relatively high, but the data presented in this paper indicate that the reduction of sulphur content of motor fuel is a problem to a relatively small number of refiners and of little or no concern to the remainder; in fact, more then 90 per cent of the 153 samples analyzed passed the Federal specification requirement, which limits the sulphur content to 0.10 -nor cent. 3 This report is based upon the results of an examination for sulphur content, Doctor test, copper strip corrosion, and color of the samples collected during January, 1930, for the twenty-first semiannual gasoline survey of the Bureau of Mines. The results of the gravity and distillation tests of the survey were published as Report of Investigations 2995. "Summary: In this report the differential regulation of NF-KB and nitric oxide (NO) was investigated in the mouse macrophage cell line RAW 264.7 following exposure to a mineral dust (silica) and /or an endotoxin (Lipopolysaccharide, LPS). The results indicated that silica and LPS can significantly induce the activation of NF-KB as well as elicit enhanced production of NO in RAW 264.7 cells as part of an early inflammatory response mechanism. A 24-hour time-course study showed that NO release from these cells continued to increase following the initial stimulus by LPS or silica. In contrast, activation of NF-KB was maximal at 6 hours and then showed a steady decline to 24 hours. The production of NO was suppressed by protease inhibitor and antioxidant, both of which block the activation of NF-KB. Surprisingly, the use of an NO synthase inhibitor resulted in an enhancement of NF-JCB activation. These findings suggest that NO produced in macrophage cells in response to an inflammatory stimulus like silica or LPS my be linked to a negative feedback role on the activation of NF-KB. It is now accepted that nitric oxide (NO) plays a pivotal role in the inflammation response process when macrophage cells are activated by a pro-inflammatory stimulus (l). Production of NO is dependent on the activity of the enzyme nitric oxide synthase (NOS). Up until now, at least three distinct genes have been described which encode different isoforms of NOS. NOS has been cloned from a variety of different mammalian cells, including constitutive neuron NOS, constitutive endothelium NOS and inducible NOS (2). Macrophages appear to be the principal cellular source for the inducible form of NOS (iNOS) activated in response to an inflammatory producing event. The mechanisms subserving the regulation of the iNOS gene and NO production have been under intense investigation in recent years (3-5). Several binding sites for transcriptional factors have been identified in the promoter region of iNOS gene, including NF-lCB, AP-1, NF-IL6, Oct-I to cite a few (5). NF-KB appears to play a"

"The spatial distribution of airborne dusts, deposition of dust in the airway, as well as the effect of airflow velocity and particle density on dust behavior in mine airways were studied in a set of experiments performed in a mine airway under controlled conditions. Considerable deposition of dust near the source was indicated. Pronounced effects due to velocity were observed in ambient dust concentration and deposition along the mine airway, both in the respirable and the total size ranges. Cross-sectional concentration measurements indicate an increase in concentration from the roof to the floor. The average cross-sectional concentration is about 75% of the concentration in the center of the airway.IntroductionA number of studies have been performed since the early 1950s on the behavior of dust in mine air (Bradshaw and Godbert, 1954; Dawes and Slack, 1954; Bradshaw et al., 1954; Hall, 1955-56; Reinhardt, 1971; Ford, 1971; Courtney et al., 1982). While the experimental data available from these studies are indeed useful in understanding dust cloud behavior in a specific situation, no generalized conclusions can be drawn because of the lack of data on parameters such as flow velocity, size distribution of the source dust, and particle density. These change from mine to mine or even within the same mine. The present study is aimed at providing a better understanding of the temporal and spatial behavior of dust particles in underground' mine airways (National Academy of Sciences, 1980). The characteristics studied encompassed airborne concentrations and floor depositions over the entire size range as well as the respirable size range. The experimental results in this paper are intended to complement a mathematical model developed to predict ambient concentration and deposition of airborne dust in mine airways (Bhaskar and Ramani, 1986)."

Traditional techniques for the experimental determination of toxic fumes produced by the detonation of high explosives are not applicable to blasting agents. To detonate properly, blasting agents require confinement, a significant booster, charge diameters of 3 inches (7.5 cm) or greater, and charge lengths greater than two-times the charge diameter. Without these conditions, blasting agents will not detonate at full order, leading to a misrepresentation of the gaseous products. A facility for detonating large, confined charges in a controlled volume has been constructed at the Pittsburgh Research Center’s Experimental Mine. The facility consists of a portion of mine entry (once used for full-scale mine explosion research and demonstrations) enclosed between two explosion proof bulkheads. Total volume of the chamber is 9,666 ft (274 m). The chamber is equipped with an air circulating system and is3 3vented using the mine's airflow. Up to 10-pound (4.5-kg) charges can be detonated in the chamber using a variety of confinements. For a typical test, the blasting agent is confined in a 4-inch (10-cm) schedule 80 steel pipe and initiated by a 3-inch (7.5-cm) diameter, 1-inch (2.5-cm) thick Pentolite booster. This combination of confinement and initiation yields a detonation velocity of about 4,000 m/sec for ANFO. This velocity is in line with that measured for blasting in the field. Twenty four 2-inch thick steel plates are suspended around the pipe bomb to stop shrapnel that would otherwise seriously damage the chamber. Following detonation of an explosive in the chamber, a circulating fan is run for about 10 minutes to uniformly mix the chamber atmosphere. Fumes samples are taken out of the chamber through 1/4-inch (0.6-cm) Teflon or polyethylene2tubes for analysis. The fumes are analyzed using bubblers or Vacutainers to collect samples for analysis by the analytical chemistry lab. The technique described here has been employed to determine the fumes produced by the detonation of a variety of ANFO formulations and commercial explosives. This technique may be developed as a standard test to measure fumes produced by blasting agents or may be used to provide data with which to develop a computer model that will reliably predict the expected fumes production based on chemical composition.

Electrolytic studies were conducted to determine the transfer rates of the alloying constituents from molten titanium anodes to solid titanium cathodes in molten salt systems . The metals , nickel , tin , copper , bismuth , and manganese , were selected on the basis of thermodynamic data and the melting point of the alloy system . The transfer of nickel , tin , and bismuth was very low . The content of these elements in the cathode was in the range of less than 0.01 to 0.001 percent . The copper transfer was 0.6 to 0.8 weight - percent in electrolytes containing titanium chlorides and 0.12 weight - percent in titanium fluoride salt systems . The manganese transferred at rates comparable to that of titanium . Highpurity titanium and titanium- manganese alloys of uniform composition were produced by electrorefining molten titanium alloys in chloride electrolytes . Comparisons are made between the calculated and the actual quantities of metal transfer .

Several sets of questions and answers on the fundamentals of first aid to the injured, based on the Manual of First-Aid Instruction of the United States Bureau of Mines, are now in use in various parts of the United States. Persons experienced in first-aid instruction believe that a standardized set of questions and answers will assist materially in preparing men for examin- ations conducted by the Bureau for first-aid certificates. Inquiries as to whether a set of standardized questions and answers is available have been made frequently by those training men for the Bureau of Mines examination for certificates. It is believed that the following list of 171 questions and answers com- piled directly from the manual will be useful to company officials and em- ployees who are engaged in cooperative first-aid training to qualify for Bureau of Mines certificates. The list may also be used by field men of the Bureau in training instructors preparatory to a cooperative training campaign and in examining classes or individuals for first-aid certificates. The response of minerals in magnetic separators is in accordance to dynamic rather than static magnetic susceptibility values . The dynamic value varies with respect to both passage speed through the separating field and time of exposure in a preliminary treatment field . Tests on 16 minerals and solids have demonstrated that both of these factors affect different minerals in different ways .

A general analytical solution of the effect of an inclined contact separating two media of differing electrical properties on a normally incident plane electromagnetic field has been given (Geyer, 1972). These solutions for the electromagnetic response at any observation point P(r, [u]) are given in the form of inverse Lebedev-Kontorovich transforms. Two modes of excitation are considered: (1) case where current density flows across strike of the contact separating the media of differing electrical properties (only Er , E [u] , and Hx differ from zero) and (2) case where current density flows along-strike (only Hr , H [u] , and Ex differ from zero). The electromagnetic fields in the frequency range of interest and for the rock conductivities under consideration are quasi-static in nature so that to a first-order approximation the horizontal magnetic field at the surface of the earth is constant and continuous across the discrete discontinuity in resistivity for case (1) above, and so that the tangential derivative of the horizontal electric field at the surface of the earth is constant and continuous across the discrete discontinuity for case (2) above. Of course, it is well known that where large horizontal gradients in conductivity exist, there also exists large anomalous components of the vertical magnetic field (Weaver, 1963). The recognition of such anomalous components and their magnitudes due to the presence of lateral resistivity changes in the overburden becomes very important in any wavetilt type measurement which may be used to locate a miner. When the lateral change in resistivity becomes quite large, the integral solutions (expressed as Lebedev-Kontorovich transforms) simplify considerably and allow ready numerical evaluation. Examples of the amplitude and phase responses of the radial electric, horizontal electric, and vertical magnetic field in the vicinity of the contrast in resistivity are shown in Figures 2, 3, and 4. Of particular significance is the fact that the anomalous vertical magnetic field is three orders of magnitude larger near the contact than far from the contact. This fact implies that where large resistivity contrasts do occur in the rocks overlying mine workings, that significant errors may be present in wavetilt measurements as used above for location criteria! Another observation insofar as the anomalous vertical magnetic field is concerned is the linear variation of phase as one proceeds away from strike in induction number (increased distance or frequency). For a pulse-excited communications system this phenomena would have a bearing on where the zero crossings would occur (i.e., 'pulse breadth') in the transient coupling between any given source-receiver configuration and at any given receiver site.
