This Bureau of Mines report analyzes diverse observations of the rates and mechanisms for the pyrolysis and devolatilization of coal and polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA). New data are presented for PMMA, together with new morphological evidence for the microscopic structure of the pyrolysis and devolatilization wave front in coals. It is concluded that there is no substantive evidence to support the traditional viewpoint that the pyrolysis and devolatilization rate process occurs isothermally, under chemical rate control; or is described realistically by a classical, unimolecular Arrhenius function of temperature. Instead, the reaction process occurs as a highly nonisothermal, heat-flux-driven, pyrolysis and devolatilization wave front, whose speed of propagation is predictable by internal heat transport constraints. Except for the complication of its charlayer residue, whose increasing thickness insulates the pyrolysis wave front from the heat source flux that drives it, both coal and PMMA behave similarly during pyrolysis and devolatilization. For PMMA, decomposition occurs at a temperature of 3500 to 5500 C; for coal it occurs at 4500 to 6000 C. There is no evidence that the reactant temperature ever exceeds those values regardless of the source temperature to which the samples are exposed.

The heavy liquid separation (HLS) process was investigated by the Bureau of Mines to develop a means of concentrating minerals from natural ores, Various spodumene ores were tested in a 0.4-inch diameter cyclone using pure tetrabromoethane (TBE) as the heavy liquid. Studies were initiated to examine the influence of (1) pulp density (2) feed grade, (3) cyclone pressure, (4) cyclone apex opening size) (5) cyclone vortex finder opening sand (6) mineral particle size on the separation efficiency. Each of these factors was found to affect the heavy liquid separation in some degree; the mineral particle size exhibited the greatest effect and the ore feed grade the least. Conditions necessary to yield an 85 percent spodumene concentrate with an 85 percent recovery were determined to be: 70 psig pressure, 10 percent solids, 0.08-inch apex opening, 0.11-inch vortex finder opening and a minimum amount of minus 200-mesh fines in the feed. Operation of multiple cyclones in series resulted in spodumene concentrates assaying over 90 percent and indicated mineral recoveries exceed-in 90 percent.

This report describes the performance of 17 selected water-injection projects producing from Pennsylvanian-and Permian-age reservoirs. Illustrations depict reservoir structure and thickness, and production and injection history. A selected bibliography of publications pertaining to area oil recovery and geology is included. Tabulations of field and reservoir data reveal marked differences in the projects. Increased oil recovery resulted from injecting water in most cases; however, seven projects recovered less oil than the operators anticipated. Oil recovery by water injection ranged from 0.2 to 262 bbl per acre ft, or 0.1 to 22.5 pct of the initial stock-tank oil in place. Major reasons suggested for poor performance include: (1) Adverse directional horizontal permeability, (2) channeling of injected water through fractures or zones of high permeability, and (3) lack of containment of injected water. One 330-foot-deep project is among the first successful shallow water-floods in north Texas. Another project is the first successful Canyon sand-stone waterflood reported in the area. Previous gas injection in two Cisco sandstone projects did not prevent the reservoirs from responding favorably to waterflooding.

Increased exploration in Alaska has resulted in many requests to the Bureau of Mines for facts about the mineral resources and mining conditions in the Territory. This report presents information about the minerals of Southeastern Alaska and the factors that affect development of a mining industry in that area. Southeastern Alaska is a narrow coastal strip of rugged mountains and many islands. The climate is mild, with an average annual temperature of 40° and heavy rainfall. Geologically, the region is favorable for deposition of ore; geographic-ally, it is difficult to prospect and to develop, except along areas immediately adjacent to the coastline.

"PURPOSE OF REPORTMany bituminous coal-mine officials realize that coal dust presents an ever-present coal-mine explosion hazard, and that persons forced to breathe large quantities of it may be more subject to respiratory infection than persons working in less dusty atmospheres. As an outgrowth of the realization that coal dust should be allayed at its source, many mining companies have expressed the desire to install dust-allaying equipment, and in a number of mines, water or wetting solution is being applied on the cutter bars of mining machines, on mobile loaders, belts or conveyors underground, and tops of mine cars. Spraying equipment also has been installed on dumps to allay dust during dumping operations. Dust-allaying equipment has not been standardized, however, because manufacturers have found that many prospective purchasers of such equipment have different ideas. These manufacturers wish to standardize, so far as feasible, the types and placement of such equipment. Many mine officials, although interested, do not know the best or most effective methods for allaying dust.For a number of years the Bureau of Mines has advocated allaying dust by applying water or, more recently, water modified by a wetting agent on the cutter bar of mining machines and by applying water to loaded and empty mine cars in order to keep as much dust as possible from spilling onto the haulage roads. In recent years this Bureau has also advocated applying water with or without a wetting agent during mechanical loading of coal and during unloading of coal from trackless cars or buggies and from elevating conveyors. It has now become apparent that specific arrangement of pipes, hose, and nozzles should be standardized to at least some extent. It is the purpose of this report, therefore, to give in detail suggested arrangement of dust-allaying equipment in the hope that both manufacturers and mine officials will have available dust-allaying equipment with maximum efficiency to do the desired work."

The Bureau of Mines evaluated the potential availability of chrysotile, amosite, and crocidolite asbestos from 42 properties in market economy countries. This resulted in the development of tonnage-cost relationships indicating the quantity of grades 3 through 7 asbestos at various average total costs of production at 0% and 15% rates of return on invested capital. The availability of grades 2 and 8 was also evaluated, but since each is produced at only one property, no analytical results were given. Total demonstrated recoverable chrysotile fiber potentially available of grades 3 through 7 from the 42 properties evaluated follow: 1.59 million t, 21.00 million t, 16.74 million t, 15.54 million t, and 19.27 million t, respectively. The total amount of crocidolite is 1.69 million t. Owing to the good potential for discovery and development of new deposits, long- term availability of fiber of all three types is not in jeopardy. However, many of the crocidolite properties evaluated in the northern Cape crocidolite field of South Africa have relatively small demonstrated resources, and new deposits will have to be exploited by the late 1990's to sustain projected levels of production.

This report covers the final results of a two-phase contract study conducted between July 1974 and October 1976. A comprehensive summary of the initial phase of the study is included. Phase I of the study involved the investigation and evaluation of all potential candidate underground systems for mining the deeper deposits of oil shale and associated minerals in the Piceance Creek basin of northwestern Colorado. Phase II called for the refinement and the detailed technical and economic analysis of the most promising system or systems, thus disclosed. Of the several systems initially investigated and evaluated, four Showed considerable merit for exploiting the deeper deposits: (1) chamber and pillar mining with spent shale backfill, (2) sublevel stoping with spent shale backfill, (3) sublevel stoping with full subsidence, and (4) block caving mining using LHD's. Final refinement and analysis of these four systems indicated their technical feasibility over at least part of the range of conditions expected in the deeper deposits. Their economic feasibility also was indicated under certain operating and market conditions. A variety of engineering, production, and cost information is provided on each of these systems.

The organic act of the Bureau, as amended by Congress and· approved February 25, 1913, made it the province, and duty of the Bureau of Mines to ""disseminate· information concerning these subjects in such manner as will best carry out the purposes of this Act.""In accordance with this directive, the Bureau reports the findings of its research and investigations in its own series of publications and also in articles that appear in scientific, technical, and trade journals; in proceedings of conventions and seminars; in reference books; and in other non Bureau publications. The number of these reports, the wide range of subjects they cover, and the variety of mediums in which they appear make the kind of list and index presented in this special publication both necessary and valuable. This issue of the Bureau of Mines List of Publications and Articles describes reports and articles published during the period January 1, 1990, to December 31,1991. During the first quarter of 1973 ADL worked closely with PMSRC staff, under an extremely compressed time schedule, on all aspects of the detailed planning, organization and overall coordination and preparation of the lectures and in-mine demonstrations for the Bureau's Technology Transfer Seminar on Mine Communications given in March of 1973 to representatives of the mining industry. Our efforts centered on the detailed organization and preparation of each of the five technical seminar lectures and associated supporting material, and the coordination of tasks assigned to ADL and other seminar participants. Revised and expanded drafts of the seminar papers were prepared from rough draft versions obtained from PMSRC, Collins Radio and ADL staff. Measurements were made to gather key data on the operation and performance of each of the following systems installed in the Bruceton Safety Research Mine; call alert paging, roof bolt paging, section wireless radio, and guided wireless radio systems. These data were analyzed, manufacturer's equipment specifications utilized, and calculations made to provide performance curves and data for each of the above systems. A substantial amount of artwork was conceived and prepared for 35 m slides, system identification posters in the mine, and seminar handouts. This artwork included some forty 8-1/2" x 11" line sketches, graphs, block diagrams, circuit diagrams, coverage maps, and other line drawings; five 30" x 40" block diagram system identification posters suitable for in-mine use; a 20" x 30" detail perspective illustration of a representative coal mine layout; forty viewgraphs; and seventy 35 m slides of the artwork and word charts. Conferences, discussions and review sessions were held with conference participants to help coordinate the various efforts, obtain technical information, and make final plans regarding the lecture presentations, associated visual aids, and the communication system installations to be demonstrated in the Bruceton mine. These meetings included final systems checkouts and dry run presentations and reviews of the lectures and mine demonstrations. This phase of the seminar effort concluded with R. Lagace and R. Spencer of ADL participating in two days of seminar presentations in the lecture hall and in the Bruceton mine.

GOLD output in Alaska in 1950, following a 2-year decline, increased to the highest point since 1942. Tills unexpected gain in production of the Territory's greatest value commodity was largely responsible for the increase in the over-all value of mineral output in the Territory to $17,852,000 from $15,549,000 in 1949. Although coal continued to rank second to gold in value of output, production was slightly less than the record production of 1949. The mining of platinum continued to be an important factor in the mineral industry, with production of crude platinum metals exceeding that of 1949. The output of lead was three times the 1949 production, and silver gained 46 percent over the previous year's total. Copper and zinc production-entirely as byproducts from other ores-showed an increase, but remained minor. Production of tin was relatively small, but substantially above the total for 1949.

The objective of this rare-earth oxalate study by the Bureau of Mines was to determine systematically by radiochemical techniques what effects, if any, could be attributed to the several variables--temperature, digestion time, acid concentration, rare-earth concentration, oxalic acid concentration, stirring, and the presence of other rare-earth ions. A Latin Square experimental design was used to evaluate statistically some of the variables. Precipitation losses ranged from near zero to about 7 percent, and mineral acid and rare-earth concentration were the predominant factors affecting completeness of precipitation. Quantitative oxalate precipitation of the rare-earth elements was achieved by controlling the experimental conditions as follows: (1) Maintaining rare-earth concentrations above 0.01M; (2) stirring the mixture several minutes after precipitation; (3) using an adequate (two to five-fold) excess of oxalic acid; (4) precipitating at room or iced temperature and digesting for at least 1 hour; (5) avoiding an excess of mineral acid and, if possible, maintaining the pH above 2.0; and (6) avoiding excess complexing agents such as EDTA (ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid). In the past 20 years research aimed at developing more efficient separation and purification techniques applicable to the rare-earth elements and yttrium has been extensive. Common to most of these procedures has been the use of oxalic acid to precipitate this group of elements selectively. However, this particular use of oxalic acid has a much earlier origin; its application in precipitating yttrium was first reported by Mosander (8)4 in 1843. Despite long and popular employment of this technique, only limited and somewhat conflicting data are available regarding the many factors affecting the degree of rare-earth oxalate precipitations.

The Bureau of Mines observed two different types of longwall mining; the advancing longwall method and the retreating longwall method at seven bituminous coal mines located in five of the coal producing states. In two mines using the advancing face method, the coal faces were abandoned because of roof failures and poor production. In the other five mines using the retreating method, roof control was good as was production. The success of longwall mining depends on good roof control and good production. The use of self-advancing hydraulic roof supports, such as Westfalia, Dowty, and Wanheim props along with Westfalia coal planers and the Anderton and Eickhoff shearer-loaders have been a factor in recent successes.

Constant-volume charges of precipitated PETN (pentaeythrite tetranitrate) at three specific gravities (0.50, 1.00, and 1.50) were used in laboratory tests to examine the effects of changes in explosive properties on free-surface displacement pulses and on crater dimensions. The tests were performed in large blocks of cement-mortar. The values for the detonation velocity, detonation pressure, specific energy, energy density, and energy release rate were calculated from the explosive loading density. Calculated explosive properties were correlated with free-surface displacement pulse measurements, strain energy, and measured crater dimensions. Increases in explosive properties resulted in increased free-surface displacement pulse parameters and crater dimensions. The loading density, detonation velocity, energy density, detonation pressure, and energy release rate were found to be best indicators of explosive performance. Simple acoustic relationships involving impedance ratios were examined and could not be used to predict peak displacement amplitude or strain energy. Data are presented in the customary English units as well as the International System of Units (SI).

World resources of cobalt appear ample for the foreseeable future; however, political and economic events have caused concern over the availability and reliability of an uninterrupted supply. Because of this concern, the U.S. Congress requested that the U.S. Bureau of Mines initiate a study of the flow of cobalt in the economy that would delineate and quantify the production areas where metal values are lost. As a result, the Bureau has developed a computerized commodity flow model. A major attribute of this model is that it is amenable to updating as supply, demand, and/or production data change. This report follows the flow of cobalt through its metallurgical and chemical applications and highlights areas where significant losses occur due to downgrading, export, or disposal. The study indicates that about 4,300,000 lb of cobalt-bearing materials are lost each year, representing 24 pct of U.S. domestic demand.

"During the period October 31 to November 4, 1944, tests were conducted by the Bureau of Mines in the Cascade Tunnel of the Great Northern Railway Cc. to determine the effects upon the tunnel atmosphere of the use of a Diesel freight locomotive through the tunnel. These tests were conducted at the request of the company to ascertain whether undesirable conditions might be caused by the discharge of Diesel engine exhaust gas in the tunnel, which was constructed for an electric haulage system and is not provided with equipment for mechanical ventilation. The use of Diesel locomotives on the division that includes the Cascade Tunnel was under consideration as a means of augmenting haulage facilities for the abnormal freight tonnage that must be handled during wartime.As the Bureau of Mines has received requests for information on the extent of contamination of the air of railroad tunnels by Diesel locomotives, this report was prepared to make available for general information the data obtained during the tests in the Cascade Tunnel. As the test locomotive is of a type used on other railroads, and as the bore and grade of the tunnel and the tonnages moved are comparable to such factors on other roads, the data should be sufficiently representative to be of general interest. The exceptional length of the Cascade Tunnel made it an excellent location for obtaining information on the composition of the tunnel air and on the movement of air induced in the tunnel by the passage of trains.The writers are indebted to C. O. Jenks, vice president of the Great Northern Railway Co., who arranged for the tests, and to the following personnel of the railroad who cooperated in the conduct of the tests: I. E. Marston and Verne Nelson, assistant superintendents of electric operations.The Cascade Tunnel is on the Spokane Division of the Great Northern Railway and pierces the Cascade Mountains some 49 miles west of Wenatchee, Wash. The west end of this division is electrified from Appleyard Station, 2 miles east of Wenatchee, to Skykomish, Wash., a distance of 73 miles. Until the described tests, only electric haulage had been employed through the tunnel since it was first opened to traffic in January 1929.The Cascade is the longest railroad tunnel in the United States - 7.79 miles. The tunnel is single-track, perfectly straight, concrete-lined, and is on an essentially uniform grade of 1.56 percent, ascending from west to east. The cross-sectional area of the tunnel is 314 square feet, the dimensions being shown in figure 1. Elevation of the east portal is 2,880 feet and of the west portal, 2,240 feet."

This report presents new findings and consolidates previously published data to provide a single reference containing a concise and comprehensive description of the Bureau's work on electrolytic chromium. Two separate systems for electrolytic-chromium recovery were developed, one designated as the oxidized system the other as the reduced system. The electrowinning of chromium metal follows the dissolution of chromium from the ore or from ferrochrome and its separation from gangue and metallic impurities. Chromite was first solubilized by pressure digestion at slightly elevated temperatures in an oxidized acid solution using Na2Cr2O7 as an oxidizing agent. Later it was found that a sodium-free electrolyte was preferable, using return-cell anolyte containing H2SO4 and Cr03 as the oxidizing agent. Gangue materials were separated from the soluble metallics by filtration; and, after the Cr+3 had been stabilized, the metallic impurities were separated as crystalline ammonium salts by vacuum crystallization.

Ten to twelve million tons of dust is produced by cement kilns annu-ally in the United States, resulting in a serious waste disposal problem. The Bureau of Mines investigated two alkali volatilization methods for converting this dust into materials for making portland cement and a useful potassium product. Portland cement kiln dust was found to be composed of finely ground cement raw materials (CaC03 and 8i02) having a layer of alkali sulfate (K2S04 and Na2S04). In this form, it cannot be directly recycled to cement kilns because concrete is weakened by a reaction between the alkali and the aggregate. Portland cements with 28-day strengths above 5,000 psi were produced from low-alkali residues using sintering and melting methods. For nearly complete removal of alkalies, primarily potassium sulfate, from cement kiln dust, a temperature above 1,300° C and a reducing atmosphere were required.

This publication contains routine analyses and related source data for 374 natural gas samples from 24 States and 5 foreign countries. These samples were collected during calendar year 1966 as a part of a continuous survey of the free world for occurrences of helium in natural gas. This survey has been conducted in the United States by the Bureau of Mines since 1917. In late 1965, the survey was expanded to include foreign gasfields. The analyses of foreign samples contained in this publication represent the first samples received as a result of this expanded program. The analyses published herein were made by mass spectrometer and a special helium analysis apparatus, which are described in Bureau of Mines Bulletins 4863 and 576.4 Eight previous publications have been made to present the results of 7,244 gas analyses made? by the Bureau of Mines Helium Activity prior to 1966. The Bureau of Mines investigated the availability of mercury from 22 deposits in market economy countries. The 15 significant deposits evaluated have demonstrated resources of approximately 25 million metric tons of ore containing 5.3 million flasks of mercury and account for more than 85 pct of the demonstrated resources for market economy countries. Using data gathered as part of its Minerals Availability Program, the Bureau determined the mercury production potential of each deposit. At a January 1984 mercury market price of $300 per flask, the deposits evaluated could economically produce an estimated 2.5 million flasks of mercury from six mines operating at the time of this study; no mercury is available at this price from nonproducing operations. At $600 per flask, approximately 4.5 million flasks of mercury are available. For production costs up to $300 per flask, operating mines could supply mercury at the current production rate of 114,000 flasks per year until 1988, when the amount of mercury available from these deposits would decrease. This decline could be offset by the development of resources currently reported at the identified level (17 million flasks) at much higher production costs.
