A number of the pegmatites in the southern Black Hills of western South Dakota contain sheet mica; and as the demand increased during World War II the area became an important producer of strategic qualities of mica. During this period of maximum activity, the U. S.. Geological Survey made detailed studies of the geological structural control, the mineralogical associations, and the production Of many pegmatites in the Black Hills. On the basis of results of this study, and at the suggestion of the Geological Survey, several of the pegmatites were examined by the Bureau of Mines, and a few were selected for further investigation. Accordingly, the White Bear, Silver Dollar, Buster Dike, and Hot Shot mines were diamond-core-drilled in 1947. The Hot Shot mine was investigated further by deepening the shaft and crosscutting the pegmatite in 1948. The mica-bearing deposits occur in lenticular intrusions of pegmatite in schists of various mineral composition. Eleven diamond-drill holes, totaling 2,111.4 feet in length, were completed on the four deposits. The shaft on the Hot Shot deposit was deepened 44 feet to the 112-foot level, and crosscuts were driven from the bottom of the shaft to the hanging Wall and foot wall of the pegmatite. This publication briefly describes the location, ownership, and history of the deposits and gives details of the work done by the Bureau of Mines and the Geological Survey.

This paper discusses accident experience and costs in 150 Colorado coal mines for the 5 years 1929-33; these mines produced 62 percent of Colorado's coal tonnage during this period. This and similar studies by the United states Bureau of Mines in other States (listed in the appendix to this report) make available comparable information on mine-accident costs and bring out clearly the importance of accident reduction from the humanitarian as well as from the economic standpoint. Compensation insurance costs constitute a considerable part of the cost of coal output. The tendency toward greater liberalization of workmen's compensation laws and increased benefits thereunder may mitigate to some extent the seriousness of an accident to a worker and his dependents, but no compensation is paid ultimately, not by an insurance fund but by the mine operator and the general public, which includes the miner. The one really effective method of reducing compensation costs is to reduce the number and severity of accidents.

The Federal Bureau of Mines examined a low-temperature tar obtained from a small-scale commercial unit for carbonizing North Dakota lignite for products that might be important to the economic processing of the tar. Tie tar may be divided into three distinct parts: (1) Tar acids, 45 volume-percent; (2) tar bases, 1 volume percent; and (3) neutral compounds, 54 volume-percent. It has a boiling range of approximately 150° to 380° C. (the decomposition temperature) and yields 18 weight-percent as hard pitch. The tar distillate up to 365° C. may be separated as: (1) Tar acids, 48 volume-percent; (2) tar bases, 1 volume-percent; and (3) hydrocarbons, 51 volume-percent. The tar-acid distillate, boiling to approximately 265° C., was characterized in some detail; the neutral fractions and the tar bases were less thoroughly examined. In general, as might be expected of a primary low-temperature tar, the lower boiling fractions are less in quantity compared with the usual high-temperature tar. The homologous series of each major class appears to be rather complete, although some components are present in very small amounts. The tar is quite unstable thermally, and might be more conveniently processed by extraction methods rather than by distillation procedures. The neutral fraction of the tar is highly aromatic, and might be considered as base stock for the production of liquid fuels.

The purpose of the study is to investigate the effects of fracture filling and associated alteration on the mechanical behavior of rocks. Results are presented for specimens from the Climax and Henderson mines in Colorado and the San Manuel mine in Arizona. The rock types studied from each location are from 1) Climax, medium-grained - granite, fine-grained granite, granite porphyry, schist, and gneiss; 2. Henderson, rhyolite porphyry; 3. San Manuel, quartz monzonite and quartz monzonite porphyry. A description of the rocks was made including: color, texture, mineral composition, composition and fabric of fracture fillings, density and porosity. Unconfined and triaxial compression tests were run on the Climax and San Manuel specimens. Sonic relocities were measured during the compression tests; Shore sceleroscope hardness was measured before the compression tests. Tentative conclusions are that some relation appears to exist between compressive strength and the following properties and features for all the specimens: dynamic Young's modulus, sonic velocity, density, rock composition, and composition and fabric of fracture fillings - veinlets. There appears to be some relation between compressive strength and Shore scleroscope hardness and porosity for quartz monzonite (San Manuel). A relation appears to exist between compressive strength and texture for schist and between com¬pressive strength and extent of failure on fracture fillings for fine-grained granite, schist, and gneiss (Climax). We plan to perform additional analyses of data collected so far and data yet to be collected in the next few months, with emphasis placed on devising a practical index of alter¬ation that can be used in the field. Limitations on interpretations arise from such factors as heterogeneity of the rocks studied, the small range of confining pressures used, and other factors presented in the text.

Three hundred and twenty-eight mines and quarries, representing 36 States, took part in the twelfth yearly accident-prevention contest conducted by the United States Bureau of Mines and known as the National Safety Competition. Four underground mines and one open-cut mine (which represents the quarry and open-cut mine group), each the leader in its group, were awarded the ?Sentinels of Safety? trophy. Relative standing in the contest" was determined by the number of days lost from accidents in proportion to the total number of man-hours worked. Since 1925, when the National Safety Competition was inaugurated, an increasing interest has been taken in it by mining and quarrying companies as a means of stimulating mine and quarry safety by competition among similar plants. Each participating plant can, on a basis of its standing and record in the contest, determine to what extent its safety program is succeeding or to what extent it needs strengthening. With this information, each company that has a low standing in the contest can intensify its safety-promotion efforts the following year to obtain a lower rate and possibly win the trophy or achieve honorable mention in the competition. Except for 1929, the National Safety Competition of 1936 represented more man-hours of employment than any other year since the yearly contests began.

THIS report gives results of an investigation of the carbonizing properties of the following eastern Kentucky coals: Elkhorn No. I bed, No. 28 mine, Wayland, Floyd County; Elkhorn No. 2 bed, Turner No. 5 mine, Drift, Flood County; Leatherwood (Haddix No. 5) bed, Leatherwood mine, Leatherwood. Perry County; and Harlan bed, Path Fork mine, Path Fork, Harlan County. The carbonizing properties were determined by Bureau of Mines-American Gas Association (BM-AGA) tests at 800° and 900° C. and by expansion tests in the sole-heated oven. Plastic properties were determined by tests in the Gieseler and Davis plastometers. The coals were tested singly and as blends with 20- and 30-percent low-volatile Pocahontas No. 3 coal. The dry, mineral-matter-free, fixed-carbon content of the carbonizing samples ranged from 56.7 percent for Elkhorn No. 2 to 59.7 percent for Leatherwood, and the heating values on the moist, mineral-matter-free basis ranged from 14,420 B. t. u. per pound for Elkhorn No. 2 to 14,720 for Harlan. The percentage of ash ranged from 2.9 to 6.1. The fluidity of three coals, measurer. In the Gieseler plastometer, ranged from 230 to 670 dial divisions; the fluidity of Elkhorn No. 2 could not be determined by this method. Blending lowered the fluidity of each coal; the fluidity of the blends containing 20 and 30 percent Pocahontas No. 3 ranged from 16 to 53 and from 8 to 17 dial divisions, respectively. Agglutinating values determined on silicon carbide-coal mixtures in the ratio 15:1 ranged from 3.8 to 6.3.

The inherent heating value or the amount of heat that will be produced when a coal is completely burned is measured in British thermal units (B. t. u.) per pound of coal . This standard heat unit is the quantity of heat required to raise the temperature of 1 pound of water 1 °F . at about 60 °F . The amount of inherent heat is determined by burning a small quantity of the coal in a heat meter or calorimeter , which gives results in British thermal units . The exact manner of making this test is standardized by the American Society for Testing Materials.4/ The value so determined is the total heat developed by complete burning, with all the products of combustion cooled down to the temperature of the calorimeter . The calorimeter is kept at about room temperature . This total heat is sometimes called the " high" or gross heat value , because it includes the latent heat given up by the water vapor in the products of combustion when the vapor condenses to water in the calorimeter . The heat as measured is reported as the heat of combustion at constant volume , since the burning is carried out in a tightly closed calorimeter chamber whose volume does not change . In actual use , coal is usually burned in an open - end chamber at constant pressure , generally somewhere near atmospheric . As the heat of combustion of coal at constant pressure is very slightly higher than the heat of combustion at constant volume , it might be considered that the heat at constant pressure should be used as the standard reference base . For an ordinary eastern coal the heat at constant pressure is about 16 B. t . u. per pound higher than the heat at constant volume . Calorimeter corrections , ordinarily not considered , that could have been subtracted from the heating value before reporting , may amount to about as much . Hence , the value reported is apt to be more nearly the true heating value at constant pressure than at constant volume .

The Petroleum Experiment Station of the Bureau of Mines at Laramie, Wyo., in cooperation with the University of Wyoming, has in progress chemical and refining studies of Wyoming black oils. In general, these crude oils are characterized by their high sulphur, high asphalt, and low gasoline content and are called black oils because of these properties and their color. Characteristics of the various Wyoming black crude oils, as determined by the Bureau of Mines Hempel method of analysis, have been published.4/

As a safeguard against excessive clinker troubles, specifications for the purchase of coal can be drawn to include the "softening" or "fusing" temperature of the ash. The value of such information has been recognized by the Bureau of Mines and has induced the bureau to investigab~ laboratory methods of determining the fUSIbility of coal ash, and the bearing of the results on clinker formation in fuel beds. The bureau realized that the fusibility of a mixture of oxides and silicates snch as is comprised in coal ash ,'aries according to the conditions under which tests are made, and that in the absence of any generally accepted method, no agreement is to be expected among tests made in differ«:-nt laboratories. Indeed, Marks a has recently called attention to differences as great as 3900 C. that were obtained with the same sample of ash by two different laboratories. Therefore if a fusion-temperature clause is to have any place in specifications for coal, a standard m('thod of t('sting should be adopted in order to insure comparable results by different laboratories and to obtain the softening or fusing temperature of the ash unde:'r conditions similar to those of a fuel bed. After a consistent method has been devised for obtaining comparable:' results at different laboratories, there will remain the correlation of these results with those from the burning of coal in furnaces before the value of fusibility tests in coal specifications can hE' finally determined.

Vermiculite is the name of a group of micaceous minerals characterized by their property of exfoliating when heated and thereby increasing many times their original volume. The resulting product has excellent heat-and sound-insulating properties, is used as a lightweight aggregate, and has numerous other industrial applications. Deposits of vermiculite occur in areas of pre-Cambrian rocks of the Llano uplift of central Texas, particularly in Burnet and Llano Counties. Because of the growing economic importance of vermiculite products, the Bureau of Mines undertook a detailed investigation of several deposits in Llano County. This investigation was completed in February 1947. The work comprised topographic surveys of five deposits, drilling with a 4-1/4 inch Parmanco power auger drill, and laboratory evaluation of samples. 342 drill holes, aggregating 4,905.5 feet, were completed, and 377 samples were taken. Laboratory evaluation of the vermiculite comprised expansion tests on both crude and beneficiated samples. The products obtained were compared with commercial-grade vermiculite from Montana.

"The Bureau of Mines conducted research on the flocculation of various minerals with insoluble cross-linked starch xanthate (ISX) to determine its potential as a beneficiation technique for low-grade, highly disseminated ores and for selective desliming. Covellite, chalcocite, pyrite, pyrrhotite, chalcopyrite, bornite, sphalerite, galena, and molybdenite fines flocculate with ISX. Floc formation, floc size, and settling rate are dependent on pH, with the pH dependence differing for each mineral. Quartz is not flocculated by ISX. Experiments to obtain selective flocculation of sulfides from quartz were attempted. Good selectivity was only obtained for the bornite-quartz system. Post flocculation separations resulted in flocculated bornite in grades as high as 92 pct. Evidence is presented that the flocculation of many of the sulfide minerals with ISX may involve covalent bonding of the xanthate group to lattice metal site(s). INTRODUCTIONBecause of the increasing interest in selective flocculation as a beneficiation technique for low-grade, highly disseminated ores and for selective desliming, the Bureau of Mines has been investigating the flocculation behavior of several cross-linked starch derivatives containing chelating groups. This report dis cusses the flocculation of sulfide mineral fines by insoluble cross-linked starch xanthate (ISX).Polymeric materials such as ISX, which contain a chelating group of known re¬activity towards specific mineral surfaces, were first proposed by Slater, Clark, and Kitchener (1), 3 Kitchener (2), and Attia and Kitchener (3) as selective flocculants for mineral fines with particle aggregation possible through a bridging mechanism. In support of its goal to maintain an adequate supply of minerals to meet national economic and strategic needs, the Bureau of Mines has investigated a novel hydrometallurgical system with sulfur dioxide. Differential leaching with dissolved SO2 of manganese, nickel, and cobalt from their hydrous oxides was found to be very rapid and efficient--almost instantaneous and quantitative. In this method a given weight of mixed oxides previously ground to minus 200-mesh is slurried with a leach solution containing a specified quantity of dissolved SO2 for 10 minutes at room temperature and ambient pressure. An empirical leaching parameter, R, is defined as the ratio of the number of SO2 moles in the leaching solution to the weight of the metal oxide charge. Plots of the variation of metal extraction with the ratio R generate a series of sigmoidal-shaped curves, each of which is characteristic of a specific metal extraction. A threshold value of R is required to initiate the leaching of a given metal from the mixed oxides. Once this threshold is reached, the metal recovery can increase to more than 95 pct in very short times. For increasing values of R, the extractability of various metals by SO2 follows the order: Mn > Ni > Co >> Fe, Al, Cu. Differences in the threshold R values permit a variety of metal separations to be made simply by adjusting the quantity of SO2 in the contacting solution. Success in this leaching system depends upon comminuting the sea nodules to less than 0.149 mm (100-mesh). Above this critical size, leaching is slowed due to the inaccessibility of inner particle reacting groups to the SO2 leaching agent. This results in nonselective extraction and less extraction of preferred metal values. At or below 0.149 mm, leaching by SO, is possible with all its attributes of selectivity, sensitivity, and rapidity. Leaching with HC1 solutions of the same pH level as dissolved SO2 yielded mixed, slow, and incomplete metal extractions. This observation rules out any interpretation based on hydrogen ion as the leaching agent. The leaching curves resemble the complexometric titration curves of heavy metals with specific coordination species.

The great demand for metallic aluminum for the prosecution of World War II caused the consumption of bauxite, the common ore of aluminum, to increase greatly. Prior to the war, the domestic deposits 'of bauxite, which occur chiefly in Arkansas and less extensively in Georgia, Alabama, and Mississippi, supplied only: about 30 ,percent of the ore required for aluminum-metal production and approximately 40 percent of alumina for all purposes. Enemy activities during the war seriously interfered with shipment of bauxite from the normal peacetime source in Surinam, Netherlands Guiana, South America, and focused attention on the necessity for increasing production from known domestic deposits. Even in peacetime, the production of aluminum ore in the United States could not satisfy requirements. Field drilling and exploration by Bureau of Mines engineers resulted in the discovery of important tonnages of high-grade bauxite suitable for treatment by the conventional Bayer process, Although an ore containing approximately 55 percent Al2O3 and only 2 to 4 percent SiO2 is preferable, it was necessary to use ores containing up to 8 or 10 percent SiO2. Because of the lower recoveries of aluminum with increased silica content, the Reconstruction Finance Corporation, through the Metals Reserve Company, established a base price of $4 for a 50-percent Al2O3 ore, containing 13-percent silica, with a premium or penalty of 14 cents for each percent of Al2O3 over or under 50; each percent of SiO2 under 13 was awarded a 20-cent premium, and each percent over 13 suffered a penalty of 43 cents; all prices were on the basis of 1 long ton of ore, dry basis.

This survey report, the first for this type of fuel, is issued to provide information on the characteristics of the burner-fuel oils now manufactured for sale. Reports of surveys of diesel fuel, conducted under a cooperative agreement between the American Petroleum Institute and the Bureau of Mines, United States Deportment of the Interior, have been published annually since 1950.2/ This survey of burner-fuel oils is similar to the diesel-fuel surveys In pattern and has been conducted under an extension of the same agreement at the request of the Oil-Heat Institute of America and the petroleum industry. It is not intended to conflict with the diesel-fuel survey but rather to supplement it. Burner-fuel oils, also specifically referred to as heating oil, range oil, furnace oil, "Bunker C," and fuel oil, are sold in increasing volumes for use in this country and for export. Sales of all grades of fuel oil in the United States have increased from 340 million barrels in 1926Y to over a billion barrels per year. 4/ Distillate fuel oil sales, in proportion to total fuel-oil volume sold, increased from 42 percent in 1950 to 50 percent in 1954. This report presents a U.S. Bureau of Mines methodology developed to incorporate factors of coal production (mining and cleaning methods, recoveries, economics, etc.) into the definition of recover-ability of a coal resource. Project procedures and computer models that were developed to include mine and preparation plant production rates, recoveries, and costs are explained. The results of these procedures and models are reviewed and compared to the Energy Information Administration estimate of U.S. coal resources-the "demonstrated reserve base." The Matewan 7-1/2-minute quadrangle in eastern Kentucky was selected to demonstrate the methodology.

The Interior Department's Bureau of Mines is the Federal Government's primary research arm in the mineral and fossil-fuel fields. In accordance with its Organic Act of 1910, the Bureau's responsibilities have been reinforced since the passage of the Federal Metal and Nonmetallic Mine Safety Act of 1966, the Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969, and the Mining and Minerals Policy Act of 1970. The 1966 and 1969 acts deal specifically with the development of safe working conditions and a healthful working environment for those engaged in the mining industry, while the third sets the national policy as follows: " ... to foster and encourage private enterprise in (l) the development of economically sound and stable domestic mining, minerals, metal, and mineral reclamation industries; (2) the orderly and economic development of domestic mineral resources, reserves, and reclamation of metals and minerals to help assure satisfaction of industrial security, and environmental needs; (3) mining, mineral, and metallurgical research, including the use and recycling of scrap to promote the wise and efficient use of our natural and reclaimable mineral resources, and (4) the study and development of [ ]
