This annual report deals with a multi-faceted research effort to increase mine electrical system safety. The project can be broken down into six task areas. Task one deals with the development of tests and instrumentation to perform these test- that are designed to detect incipient faults on mine power systems. This program also encompasses evaluation of the tests and automation of data collection and recording using a microprocessor. Task two concerns the prediction and suppression of mine electrical transients. This program involves digital simulation and suppression hardware evaluation. Task three deals with the reliability and fail safe assessment of various components of the mine electrical system including both the protective system and bulk power system components. Task three deals with theoretical analysis, laboratory testing and in-situ testing in coal mines of power system devices. Task four is an effort to design an optimal mine electrical distribution system. The initial effort is along the lines of refining analytical tools such as the load flow model. Task five is an attempt to optimize the selection of molded case circuit breakers makes or models on the basis of total annual cost. Task six assesses the availability of equipment to satisfy existing federal regulations.

A general description of the activities and results of bauxite investigation by the Bureau of Mines at its bauxite project in Saline and Pulaski Counties, Ark., has been given in Report of Investigations 4251. The factual data obtained during the project are reported in a series of Reports of Investigations beginning with No. 4251, of which this is the fifteenth. The data are accompanied by maps showing the location of holes drilled and the deposits developed. Each area upon which work was done is reported by halt townships. Each bauxite deposit investigated was assigned a name and a number for ready reference and identification and its location and name are shown on the appropriate half-township map. The description of each half township is followed by a description of each deposit developed in that half township. The 14 halt-township maps and 77 detail maps of the bauxite deposits in this series of reports give the locations and numbers of all the holes drilled on the project except the deep holes drilled to test the geophysical anomalies. The locations of those holes show on figure 13 in volume 1. The Descriptions of the deposits developed are followed by complete detailed logs of the drill holes. Many of the widely spaced exploratory holes did not discover bauxite of minable thickness and grade. The pertinent information obtained from the widely spaced exploratory drill holes has been summarized and tabulated, and a table for each halt township is given with the discussion covering that area.

Recommendations for safe practices in the operation of Diesel engines underground must take into consideration the hazards that might be created if the composition of the underground atmosphere differs from that of normal air. One aspect of this problem was discussed in the second report6/ of this series, which presented the results of tests in which a Diesel engine was operated with mixtures of normal air and exhaust gas supplied to the intake of the engine. IN 1942 the Bureau of Mines began to develop the Kroll process for use in the large-scale production of titanium. Titanium and titanium alloys are now commercial metals. These metals are relatively expensive, but It is now evident that they will have important industrial uses and that in many instances these will be related to their remarkable corrosion resistance. This bulletin presents the known corrosion properties of titanium and its alloys in useful form. In marine environments titanium is highly resistant to corrosion and does not pit, or undergo crevice corrosion, stress corrosion, or corrosion fatigue. Titanium is also highly resistant in many salt solutions, including most chlorides. It is very resistant to corrosion in nitric acid solutions. It is also resistant to white fuming nitric acid. However, it may react violently with red fuming nitric acid. In phosphoric acid solutions titanium has rela¬tively good resistance to corrosion, but it has less resistance to sulfuric acid and still less to hydrochloric acid solutions. Titanium corrodes very rapidly in hydrofluoric acid Solutions. It is very resistant to corrosion in many organic chemicals. However, it has only moderate resistance to formic acid solutions and poor resistance inn oxalic acid solutions. Titanium does not corrode in dichloroaretic acid but, corrodes rapidly in 100 percent trichloroacetic acid at 100° C. Titanium is resistant to barium, calcium, magnesium, ammonium, and sodium hydroxides. Titanium is inert in wet chlorine, bromine, or iodine gases. However, in dry chlorine gas titanium reacts rapidly enough to ignite. It also reacts rapidly with dry bromine gas, but, it is resistant to dry iodine gas. When titanium is exposed to red fuming nitric acid solutions with high nitrogen dioxide content and low water content, it corrodes, undergoes stress-corrosion cracking, and becomes pyrophoric. This occurs more readily with some titanium alleys, such as titanium-8 percent manganese. A fresh titanium surface immersed in water or in an aqueous solution and in contact with an oxygen-rich atmosphere under sufficientt pressure is unstable and will ignite spontaneously. Inherently an active metal, titanium has a tendency to become less active in environments containing oxidizing agents such as air, oxygen, chlorine, or ferric, cupric, or platinic ions. Titanium is more noble than most structural metals in roost, environments and its excellent corrosion resistance is generally not, affected by contact with these metals. However, some of the other metals corrode faster because of contact with titanium. Titanium undergoes anodic polarization readily, so that even when it is the less noble member of a galvanic couple it may corrode less because of the contact. Titanium alloys often have corrosion properties and electrochemical characteristics similar to those of commercially pure titanium. Titanium alloys containing noble metals, zirconium, molybdenum, vanadium, tantalum, or copper sometimes have better corrosion resistance than pure titanium.

The original flotation reagents were certain oils selected for a combination of properties that occurred fortuitously. It was recognized quite early in the study of flotation mechanism that, in order to function, an oil must have an active group-one that differs from the remainder of the molecule in its affinity for water or the mineral particle. Wark4 gives credit for recognition of this elementary chemical principle to the senior author of this report.5 However, it was soon found that simple hydrocarbons could not be used as flotation reagents and that two of the functions, which were combined in the early flotation oils such as pine and eucalyptus, could be obtained in separate compounds and their relative intensity controlled to advantage. These two functions were called collecting and frothing.

This report contains Bureau of Mines analyses of 291 samples of crude petroleum from the Gulf Coast Area of Louisiana and Texas. Included are 65 analyses from 51 Louisiana fields and 226 analyses from 216 Texas fields. Analyses from the Texas fields include 90 from 58 Upper Gulf Coast fields, 47 from 28 Middle Gulf Coast fields, and 89 from 40 Lower Gulf Coast fields. The analyses represent fields that produced 1,000 barrels or more per day during at least one of the years 19.57 through 1961, with the exception of 23 analyses from the Texas fields. The fields considered are listed by state and geographical groupings, with field names arranged alphabetically within each grouping. The tabulation also includes information concerning the geological sources of the samples. General characteristics of the crude oils and analytical and computed data determined from the analyses are summarized. Crude oil production data are given for the fields for 1960 and 1961 and are cumulative through 1961.

Much of the material is reprinted on the following pages in its original form, and changes have been made only where manifestly neces- St,ry. Laboratory methods have been brought up to date. Some types of apparatus described in Bulletin 42 have now become obsolete and newer designs are described instead. The authors hope that this bulletin will be of as much service as was Bulletin 42.

IN CHARACTERIZING tars obtained by the low-temperature carbonization or North Dakota lignite, infrared spectra have been an invaluable aid in both qualitative and quantitative examination. Quite early it became evident in the tar-research program of the Bureau of Mines, U.S. Department of the Interior, that the small number of published spectra available for hydroxy aromatics would be inadequate for comparative purposes when dealing with the wide range of compounds present in coal tar; therefore, compiling a catalog of spectra was initiated as a continuing part of the tar program. As these spectra should be valuable to other investigators in this and related fields, they are being presented in this report. This group or spectra (figs. 1-98) represent 97 compounds, largely phenolic materials. The major problem of this project has been the availability of materials for examination. Samples have been obtained from commercial and private laboratories or synthesized at the Bureau of Mines Lignite Experiment Station, Grand Forks, N. Dak.

The development of the Seminole area into one of the major oil-producing sections of the country has been accompanied by many innovations and departures from former methods of development. On July 1, 1929, two years and nine months from the date of discovery, 20,490 acres were considered proved, and additional acreage is constantly being developed. Because of its peculiar conditions, extent, and rapid rate of development, the Seminole area provided numerous problems, the solution of which necessitated research in connection with practical field operation; as a result, there was a radical departure from methods usually employed in the development of a new field in the Mid-Continent area.

These reagents are those with a molecular structure comprising a long hydrocarbon chain attached to a. highly molar or hydrorhile group in such manner that ionization is nearly complete in dilute solution and the resultant ionic grouping has a very considerable hydrophile-lipophile unbalance in the structure. As a result of this characteristic structure these reagents are more or less powerful frothers and emulsifiers. Ten the degree of hydrophile-lipaphile unbalance is sufficiently great and specific chemical factors are absent these compounds behave in flotation as noncollecting frothers insensitive to reason¬able changes of pH.

The lignite deposits of the United States represent a huge potential source of fuel for power generation. It has been estimated that lignite constitutes about 24 percent of the remaining National reserves of solid fuel on a tonnage basis and about 15 percent of the reserves on a B.t.u. basis. (See sec. 3, part 1.) The major portion of these reserves is in North Dakota. Lignite has been used locally for domestic heating since the first settlers burned it at forts and fur-trading posts as early as 1855. Some of the first studies of the use of lignite in steam boilers were conducted by the Federal Bureau of Mines from 1910 to 1920 (15, 19) 1/ However, the commercial utilization of lignite as fuel for producing power developed slowly. Not until about 1925 was any really successful lignite industrial fuel-blaming equipment developed. Since then the commercial use of lignite as a fuel for producing power has been increasing steadily.

The safety record established by the coal-mining industry of the United States during 1934, although not as favorable as that for the previous year, was better than the record for any other year during the period 1930-34 for which complete figures covering fatal and nonfatal accidents at the mines are available. The number of accidents was 89.98 per million man-hours of employment compared with 86.74 for the year 1933, the latter being the lowest rate in any of the 5 years referred to. The rate was 105.60 for 1930, the first year covered by available data. Employment increased in 1934; the number of workers represented an increase of 8 percent over the year 1933, man-shifts of labor increased 16 percent, and the number of man-hours of labor increased 7 percent. The total number of man-hours of employment also exceeded the number reported for 1932, and was almost equal to the record for 1931.

THE PURPOSE of this investigation was to develop methods for analyzing coal derivatives and products from the Fischer-Tropsch synthesis. As part of this investigation it was necessary to study the mass spectral characteristics of many classes of compounds. The mass spectra of alcohols, the trimethylsilyl ether derivatives of alcohols, acetal-type compounds, ketones, esters, and naphthenes were correlated with structure, and analytical methods were formulated. A method was devised to determine the ratio of branched to normal hydrocarbons up to CIS in the Fischer-Tropsch product. Low-ionizing-voltage mass spectrometry was combined with type-analyses to analyze tar acids and neutral oils from coal. The necessary sensitivity correlations at low-ionizing voltage were developed, particularly for phenolic compounds. Special analytical techniques were developed for the mass spectral analyses of specific compounds and compound types including (1) oxides of nitrogen, (2) hydrogen sulfide, (3) isomers of butenes and pentenes, and (4) hydrogen deuteride. An investigation was made of the effects of various hydrocarbons and oxygenated compounds on tungsten filaments in the mass spectrometer. The operating characteristics of rhenium filaments under similar conditions were studied. Several improved sample handling techniques were developed, including an automatic manometer and a self-filling micropipet. Studies were made of anomalous and negative peaks in the mass spectra of certain gases.

The year 1977 generally was a year of growth in overall world mineral industry activity, although there were downturns in major elements of the world's iron and steel industries. The sharp upturns in market economy nation activities that were noted in 1976, following the reduced performance levels of 1975, were moderated, and in the centrally planned economy nations, overall mineral industry activity apparently continued to increase, but at a pace in keeping with that of 1916 rather than at the higher rates of the earlier 1976's. Noteworthy during the year, if only in a negative sense, was the inability of world powers to reach any significant agreement on issues relating to deep seabed mining. Interest from a commercial viewpoint centered around deposits or so-called manganese nodules. These materials, which indeed are chiefly manganese in terms of their content on a quantitative basis, really were of commercial interest primarily far their copper, nickel, and cobalt content. Participants at the Third United Nations Law of the Sea Conference looked into seabed mining rights, but reached no mutually agreeable decisions.

[WHEN the Bureau of Mines was established in July 1910, one of the problems immediately attacked by the new organization was the development of standard, for the design and testing of electrical equipment that could be used without fear of initiating fires and explosions in underground coal mules. Research and investigation by Bureau personnel, supplemented by the published results of similar work by European mining authorities, led to the establishment of standards or "schedules." which guide manufacturers in the design of many types of electrically operated machines and devices used in. underground coal Mining. By issuing these standards, Bureau personnel establish the requirements to be met by such equipment before it tan be approved by the Bureau of Mines as permissible for use in gassy coal mines. Every 2 years the Bureau of Mines publishes a list of equipment that leas been accepted as approved or permissible during the preceding 2 calendar years. This is done to inform the mining industry of the availability of the latest equipment for safe use underground.]
