Magneto-flotation is a recently developing technology of mineral processing. This technology combines the traditional magnetic separation with flotation and provides a magnetic and buoyant force compound field to separate different minerals based on the differences of magnetism and floatability between useful minerals and gangue minerals. Magneto-flotation is applicable to separate ferromagnetic from nonmagnetic minerals, especially to separate magnetite from floatable gangue minerals. This magneto-flotation column is equipped with pulse electromagnetic field in the middle upper part, a bubble producer and upwell water inlet in the bottom. The pulse time of electromagnetic field in the column can be optionally adjusted and the maximum intensity of pulse magnetic field can reach 35mT. Pulse magnetic field can not only restrain magnetic minerals from entering into the froth layer, but also destroy the magnetic agglomeration to ensure a higher recovery and a higher concentrate grade. The results of experiments with magnetite show that pulse magnetic field has remarkable influence on flotation process. Compared with single flotation, magneto-flotation column can improve the recovery of magnetite by ten percent. After one time?s magneto-flotation processing, the grade of iron concentrate can increase from 65.4% to 69.5%, the content of silicon oxide in iron concentrate decreases from 7.4% to 2.8%, and the total recovery is above 96%.

"Microcrystalline silica impurities such as quartz and opal-CT commonly associated in bentonite should be controlled and removed as far as possible when bentonite is used as biocompatible raw material because they show sufficient evidence of carcinogenicity. Since opal-CT contained in bentonite in trace amounts cannot be well separated by conventional sedimentation method, in this work, the ultrasound-assisted removal of the impurity was attempted. Irradiating ultrasound into bentonite-water suspension promoted the production of fine montmorillonite particles in the suspension and the production markedly increased when montmorillonite was activated by Na2CO3. Subsequent centrifugation of the suspension made it possible to recover pure montmorillonite particles as an overflow product. Only 16.2 mass % of total solids was recovered as an overflow from the non-activated suspension, whereas 63.5 mass % was recovered from the activated suspension at centrifuging speed of 10000 rpm. Increasing sonicating time enhanced the yield of overflow, however, excessive sonication up to 10 min hindered the purification of montmorillonite. It was observed that the peak reflection of (101) plane of opal-CT in overflow increased as sonicating time increased during prolonged sonication. INTRODUCTION Bentonite consisting predominantly of mineral montmorillonite is clay-rich soft rock generated frequently from the alteration of volcanic ash. Depending on the nature of its genesis, bentonite contains a variety of accessory minerals, which may include mainly quartz, feldspar, opal cristobalite/tridymite (opal-CT), calcite, illite and mica. The presence of these accessory minerals can impact the industrial value of the deposit, reducing its commercial value depending on its applications. Therefore, bentonite is often purified by removing these impurity minerals for special applications where specific properties and characteristics are required (Murray, 1999). Among the special applications, bentonite is often used in the cosmetic and pharmaceutical industry as both excipient and active ingredient in the forms of liquid (suspensions, emulsions), semi-solid (creams, ointments) and solid (powder, capsules and tablets). The basic requirements for bentonite to be used as raw material are pure, microbiological and mineralogical inertness. Physical properties such as swelling volume and gel formation are also important. Particularly, microcrystalline silica polymorphs such as quartz, cristobalite and opal-CT should be controlled and removed as far as possible because they show sufficient evidence of carcinogenicity in humans."

"Tatasteel’s West Bokaro washery#3 is designed to deslime raw coal at 0.5mm; the oversize (+0.5mm) is beneficiated in dense media cyclones (DMC) while the undersize (-0.5mm) is beneficiated in froth flotation (FF) cells. Nearly, 80% of the raw coal feed reports to the DMC circuit consisting of four parallel streams. Presently, the performance of DMCs at washery#3 is interpreted by: (a) comparing the actual plant yield w.r.t the lab predicted yield and (b) misplacement of clean coal to middllings.However, the comparison between actual & lab predicted yield is fallacious given the fact that the lab predicts yield of the borehole sample while the feed received at the plant has different characteristics altogether due to the dilution during mining. To mitigate the said limitations, a quick diagnosis tool using the past data has been developed that will give a prediction of performance of different coal seams in the DMCs, inputs being feed ash to DMCs and stream wise feed specific gravity (coal & magnetite combined).The tool also will help in identifying the root cause on real time basis thereby helping the operator to take necessary corrective actions. The operator can intimate the mining personnel in cases of shale reporting to the feed as a result of dilution during mining. In events of higher standard deviations between the parallel streams w.r.t feed specific gravity, the operator can adjust the parameters accordingly to minimize the yield loss. INTRODUCTION West Bokaro came into existence in 1948, as an independent coal company, managed by M/S Anderson Wright. Tata Steel acquired the Company in 1956 to meet its requirement of metallurgical grade coal for Iron making. Subsequently, in 1976, it was made a division of Tata Steel. In 1974, when coal mines were nationalized, West Bokaro was exempted as it produced coal only for captive consumption of the Steel Works. The first washery of India was set up in West Bokaro. The business objective of the West Bokaro division is to produce clean coal at optimum cost for captive use in the steel plant of Tata Steel at Jamshedpur. The strategy is to reduce ash with minimum loss of yield so that quality of coal improves and yet the cost is beneficial vis-a vis imported coal. The primary product is the metallurgical grade coal for coke ovens, which converts coal into coke for use in the Blast Furnaces."

"Tumbling mills are machine, operating in non-equilibrium, capable of applying forces on the ore contained within, causing the ore to break down. The action of the mill on the ore is very inefficient, producing a large quantity of heat. The inefficiencies of the mill drive the desire for improvement, spawning research and development activities. Given the non-equilibrium nature of the mill, the theory of Large Deviations is proposed as the framework that captures the state of the mill. The theory of Large Deviations allows for the determination of the rate function and the scaled cumulant generating function (SCGF), for systems in either equilibrium or non-equilibrium. Powerful connections can been made between familiar concepts of statistical physics and the concepts introduced by the theory of Large Deviations: entropy can be associated with the rate function; the scaled cumulant generating function with the free energy. It is shown that observables, compatible with Large Deviation theory, can be identified for the tumbling mill. Here, the time series of the energy associated with an element of the charge is such an observable. Furthermore, using some experimental data, it is shown that the time series of the energy can define a rate function, thereby describing the system within the Large Deviation framework. Finally, a discussion of the results is given, particularly how this theory can be further developed for tumbling mills."

During the last decade the output of mining companies has increased rapidly. The key driver is the increase in demand for raw materials in the developing world, and thus this demand has driven up ore prices. From the time when the Raw material group (year 2000) started to introduced their index, it was set to 100 points. Today, year 2011, the index is over 400, which means that ore prices have quadrupled since then. Mine companies have to go deeper in the mines to access the ore bodies to increase the mine capacity and to be able to respond to the market. By going deeper in the mine, there will be new challenges that have to be considered. One of these challenges is how to handle the mine water that is produced in the mine. The water has to be moved to the surface in order to keep the mine from flooding, and this causes more challenges. One solution is to pump the mine water up to the surface without treatment; however, this causes considerable pump wear and the water will still require treatment on the mine?s surface. Another solution is to treat this water in the mine before pumping it to the surface. Metso Minerals has a system solution to treat the mine water, by separating the solids from the mine water. This system reduces the erosion in the pumps and will save many maintenance hours in the long term. One other option is to use the treated water in a closed circuit and reuse it in the process. This system can be divided into three steps: Firstly, a spiral dewaterer to remove the coarse solid particles. For the next step, lamella thickener is used to remove most of the solids, and lastly tube press to handle the sludge from the underflow lamella thickeners. The Mojiang nickel deposit is situated in Mojiang county, yunnan province, a tropical area in the southwestern China. The known geological resource (measured and inferred) includes 4 million tons of nickel sulphide ore at an average grade of 0.50% Ni and 0.34% As. Nickel minerals are mainly gersdorffite (NiAsS), millerite(NiS), morenosite (NiSO4?7H2O), and more than 50% nickel minerals is gersdorffite which contains arsenic. Pyrite is the dominant sulfide mineral, 22% in the ore and part of nickel minerals are locked in pyrite. It is difficult to attain the nickel concentrate quality allowed by a smelter and the acceptable nickel recovery through flotation due to the high arsenic in the ore and the nickel minerals locked in pyrite. The shake flask tests and column tests for nickel recovery from the Mojiang nickel sulfide ore had been finished by the end of 2003. The column bioleaching tests were carried out using the columns with diameter of 120 mm and height of 1200 mm, and 70% of nickel dissolution was attained in 300 days. A 10,000t pilot test heap was built in the Mojiang Nickel Mine by June 2003. The ore used in the test heap was supplied from the underground mine and was crushed to -20 mm before being feeding to the test heap, which is 4~5 m high, 30 m wide and 50 m long. The naturally adapted mesophile and moderate thermophile have been inoculated into the leaching pile by June 2003. The operating temperature in the heap ranges from 38? to 55?, varying with season. 30% of nickel dissolution was achieved in 3 months and the typical pregnant leach so-lution (PLS) contains 2~3 g/L Ni and 20~30 g/L Fe. The Ni sulfide which was produced by us-ing Na2S 10 t/t?Ni contains 16%~20% Ni and Ni recovery was 98%. 70% of Ni dissolution is expected in 12 months. The test heap was scaled up to 60,000 t of ore per year by mid of 2005. In this paper metallurgical studies and performance of the pilot test heap will be described. The results of mineralogy, shake flask tests and column tests on bioleaching of the nickel sulfide ore are reviewed. The key test heap operation parameters, the performance of bio-heap leahing-Na2S precipitation, ferrous oxidation-ferric precipitation-Na2CO3 precipitation, bacteria in the pile, water and acid balance, effluent disposal, capital and operation costs are also discussed.

In this paper, the molybdenite flotation tailing of cleaner-scavenger bank which has a mass of very fine particles has been taken as raw ore to be processed by flotation with/without ultrasonic. The effect of ultrasonic frequency, intensity, processing time and uploading location on molybdenite flotation efficiency is investigated by four-factor three-level orthogonal experiment, and the effect significances of these ultrasonic variables to molybdenite flotation efficiency have also been evaluated. Single-factor analysis of variance is conducted to investigate whether the effect of ultrasonic on molybdenum ore flotation efficiency is significant or not. The samples extracted from different ore species in different time have been mixed to analyze the particle size. The results show that the particle size of +38µm in concentrate obviously increases while the particle size of -25µmobviouslydecreaseswith ultrasonic, which means that ultrasonic is good for flotation due to sludge removing effect. The state discharge standard for arsenic-containing wastewater which is the first kind of pollution is less than 0.5 mg/L. In fact, in a certain company, the acidic arsenic-containing wastewater in non-ferrous smelting was as high as 860 mg/L, which is far beyond the state discharge standard. Obviously, the direct release of this wastewater without further treatment would result in great hazards to the ecological environment. To aim directly at the characteristics of acidic arsenic-containing wastewater, in this study, two steps of treatment including oxidation-flocculation and removal fluoride by mixing alkaline neutralization were suggested. Through analyzing various influencing factors in treatment effects, the optimum technical conditions were obtained. The sediments after treating were recyclable and the secondary pollutions can be avoided. Moreover, the results also show that, all indexes of the effluent after treating are lower than the First Grade Standard of Integrated Wastewater Discharge (GB 8978-1996). This novel method has advantages of short flow sheet, easy operation and low cost.

The productivity index of the Coopracarcegua Ltda., a mid-size coal mining company of Norte de Santander, Colombia, was related absenteeism using accident, productivity and profit data four years. The analysis was based on type, severity and frequency of accidents, number of absentee days; price per metric ton, and other relevant parameters. The enterprise is formed by 5 different mines of thermic coal, each one with different exploitation technologies and different productivity. Each mine was analysed separately and the loss of profit due to absenteeism was calculate for each one. The study showed that the foregone earnings due to absenteeism in terms of the whole productivity of the enterprise was about of 6.6% of the total profit average the 4 years, with calculated values of 14.7%, 3.5%, 8.4% and 4% per year in the evaluated period. The study identified that the most important cause of absenteeism was "General Disease". The foregone earnings in 2009, the highest loss for the analysed period, was about US$ 0.937 million and during the whole evaluated period was US$ 2.46 million.

Yunnan mineral is a kind of containing Ta-Nb rare earth deposit, the most potential economic valuable element in it is Sc, and raw mineral has 17.0 g/t Sc. Take the character of Sc into account, the key problem in producing scandium chloride molten salt by adaptive technology is how to man-ufacturer anhydrous scandium chloride molten salt. During the course above, the key problem is that preventing Scandium chloride from being hy-drolyzed into ScOCl. The ScOCl content of molten salt not only affect purifying scandium but al-so do harm to the production of Mg-Al alloy. In order to restrain the creation of ScOCl, add ammo-nium chloride into molten salt. As long as ScOCl is created, it would be chloridized. Thus, during the course of dehydrating anhydrous chloride molten salt this method prevents scandium from hydrolyzing. Accordingly, the key phase of this producing course is eliminate ammonium chloride and the surplus crystal water, and the most crucial of it is restrain scandium chloride from being hydrolyzed into ScOCl. This research analyzed the theory that ammonium chloride is trend to be hydrolyzed into ammo-nium chloride, and propose the research scheme of restraining this process from creating ScOCl. The new process of restraining the generating of ScOCl and dehydration for crystal water rare earth chloride is adopted: Inert gas temperature increases rapidly to a certain degree to eliminate ammonium chloride and crystal water. The experimental research were done such as : the temperature of eliminating ammonium chloride and crystal water, amount of ammonium chloride, time, temperature growth speed, influence of inert gas flow toward to scandium percent hydrolysis, whereby, we conclude the optimal process condition in this period: Temperature: 400°C, proportion of oxidized scandium and ammonium chloride is 1:1.5(Proportion of oxidized scandium and additional salt is 1:5.4), time is 120minute, temperature growth speed is 10?/min inert gas flow is 5L/min.

In order to investigate the effect of nanobubbles on adsorption of surfactant on mineral surface, the nanobubbles on the surface of calcite with -37µm fraction in the sodium oleate system were controlled by pressurization and decompression to mixing vessel. Subsequently, the adsorption amount of sodium oleate on the surface of calcite were detected by ultraviolet spectrum at different stirring times and different pressures. At the same time, the nanobubbles on the calcite surface were imaged with atomic force microscopy (AFM). In addition, a homemade vacuum Hallimond tube device was used for the flotation of single mineral, and the grade and recovery of minerals in concentrate was used to determine the influence of the nanobubbles on flotation. The experimental results showed that a large number of nanobubbles were found on the calcite surface by AFM under the dissolved oxygen difference (DOD) condition of -4 mg/L. And a large difference in adsorption capacity of sodium oleate on the surface of calcite was observed under different air pressure conditions. It indicated that the ambient pressure had a certain effect on the adsorption of sodium oleate on the calcite surface, and this effect did not depend on the constant low pressure or constant normal pressure, but depended on the changing process of pressure. The single mineral flotation experiment results indicated the recovery of calcite under decompression condition (formation condition of nanobubbles) was 1.5-2 times that under constant normal pressure, and the flotation time is much shorter. Moreover, the recovery under constant normal pressure was greatly influenced by flotation time. In this paper, only one aspect of the effect of nanobubbles on mineral flotation was preliminarily explored. It was confirmed that after vacuum-pumping, the adsorption of sodium oleate on calcite surface could be increased, the flotation time also was greatly reduced and the recovery of calcite was increased.

The slag produced in metallurgical smelting processes contains considerable amount of valuable metals. The present work focuses on recovery of copper value by froth flotation from the copper smelter slag. The slag samples are subjected to detailed characterization including automated quantitative mineralogy using Mineral Liberation Analyzer (MLA). The MLA results indicate that a part of copper is present in sulphide form in fayalite (iron-silicate) matrix and very poorly liberated. SEM-EDX analyses also reveal that a certain part of the copper is present within the fayalite (Fe-Ca-Si) matrix, perhaps either as lattice impurity or very fine grain. The copper smelter slag is ground in wet mode in a ball mill, to particle size distribution suitable for flotation. Subsequently, the slurry undergoes froth-flotation in lab-scale Denver-type flotation cell. Various combinations of sodium iso-propyl xanthate (SIPX) and alkyl hydroxamate collectors are used along with pine oil as frother. A multiple collector dosage is required for effective flotation of non-sulphide copper phases associated fayalite and alkyl hydroxamate is identified as one of the effective collector for non-sulphide minerals. The copper recovery can be enhanced by 7-10% with a combination of collectors as compared to conventional sulphide flotation using only xanthate type collectors. Vanadium-titanium magnetite from Panzhihua was crushed with open and closed circuit process by high pressure grinding roller (HPGR). The particle size characteristics of the crushed product were analyzed and the micro-cracks generated by HPGR during the crushing process were studied. The results showed that, in crushed products, the reduction ratio increases and the size distribution becomes more uniform with increasing of the pressure on roller?s surfaces. The fine fraction content of crushing products from -3.2 mm classification closed-circuit by HPGR increases obviously compared with that by Jaw Crusher and particle size distribution is more uniform. Large amount of intra-crystalline cracks and cleavage cracks are generated in vanadium-titanium magnetite crushed by HPGR, which makes the specific surface area larger and Bond grinding work index (objective particle size is 0.074 mm) decreased by 14.05% than that by Jaw Crusher. And the liberation degree of monomer of the product crushed by HPGR increased compared with that by Jaw Crusher with the similar fineness of grinding. In this research bioleaching or extraction of iron present in a kaolin from La Virgen mine, Anti-oquia/Colombia, was carried out. Organic acids produced in SF with Aspergillus niger were used in the process. The fermentation process was carried out in 3 L aerobic stirred bioreactors, at a temperature of 30 °C, a stirrerd speed of 700 rpm, an initial pH of 4 and a fermentation time variable between one to 8 days, obtaining broth fermentation samples daily per bioreactor. For iron extraction, fermented broth from second to sixth day of fermentation was evaluated and it was found that the fermentation broth of the third day showed a larger potential for iron removal, 786 ppm, by using kaolin with an initial iron content of 1401 ppm. A set of tests using commercial organics acids such as citric acid and oxalic were carried out because those were found in the fermentation broth and it was found that oxalic acid presented three times more iron removal than citric acid.

The feed to Chadurmalu iron ore concentrator plant is a mixture of magnetite and haematite iron ore with a Fe/FeO ratio of about 8. The feed to plant, after grinding via wet SAG mill, is pre-separated by wet low intensity magnetic separator. Magnetic product is conducted to magnetite processing circuit for producing magnetite concentrate, and nonmagnetic product is directed to haematite processing circuit. Due to surface oxidization of magnetite particles and a decrease in magnetic attraction properties, significant amount of these particles are misled to tailing which results in decreasing the efficiency of haematite processing circuit. This problem can be remedied by using magnetic drum separator with more magnetic intensity and/or gradient. In this paper, the replacement of LIMS separators with wet medium intensity magnetic separators with a field intensity of 3800 gauss on drum surface (MIMS) have been suggested and considered as the most suitable solution to prevent the loss of magnetite particles. The results of carried out investigations with replacement of drum separators in industrial scale, showed that utilizing MIMS in magnetite processing circuit resulted in increasing final concentrate weight recovery on average by 2.59%, without any adverse effect on the concentrate quality; decreasing the magnetite content in the feed to high gradient magnetic separator (HGMS) by about 3.5%; decreasing the feed to floatation part by about 7% and consequently decreasing consumption of chemical reagents; increasing Fe/FeO ratio of the feed to plant. N-Methyl-2-pyrollidone (NMP) has already been proven a good solvent for extraction of coal. It is believed that organic components of coal are likely to be dissolved with the solvolytic power of NMP. During dissolution process, original coal also gets disintegrated and thus helps in further extraction. Coal extraction highly depends on temperature, coal to solvent ratio, N-Methyl-2-pyrollidone (NMP) to Ethylenediamine (EDA) ratio and the size of coal particles. The process has been established in the laboratory. There is no reference available beyond lab scale. In present study, we are running a bench scale plant with 40 kg/batch capacity. Design of experiment was done in such a way that the optimum zone of the process gets evaluated for clean coal having low ash with high yield. Bench scale plant trial was conducted based on optimum zone developed during design of experiments (DOE). From the DOE analysis it was observed that feed size and coal to solvent ratio are important parameters for this process. Total 27 experiments (four factors with 3 level of variation) were designed through Box-Behnken model. It was observed that -0.5 mm feed size of coal, 150 °C extraction temperature, 17:1 NMP to EDA ratio, 1:9 coal to solvent ratio was optimum conditions. The results obtained at optimum conditions are 50% clean coal yield with 5% ash.

"During mechanical flotation of fine liberation sized complex rare earth ores, a large fraction of ultrafine valuable mineral particles are lost to tailings. Fine gangue mineral particles can be entrapped within the froth phase and be floated together with target mineral particles. Another common challenge in ultrafine rare earth mineral flotation is the formation of a sticky froth (excessively stable froth). Thus, the improvement of the flotation of fine and ultrafine rare earth bearing minerals through appropriate cell design and reagent selection is highly desirable. The aim of this study is to investigate the performance of a pico-bubble cavitation flotation column in improving selective recovery of ultrafine rare-earth elements (REEs) bearing minerals from complex and low-grade ores. In pico-bubble cavitation column, very small bubbles are generated which are capable of attaching to ultrafine particles and consequently modifying their surface properties. The overall effect of these processes should lead to improved flotation selectivity and recovery of ultrafine RE mineral particles. In this paper, the effects of a number of flotation operating variables on recovery and grade of REE minerals was investigated using a continuous pilot scale pico-bubble column flotation. At the flotation conditions used in this study, subtle monazite upgrade was observed while gangue Fe oxide was preferentially floated even in the presence of depressants. INTRODUCTION Rare earth elements (REEs) have unique properties such as superconductivity and catalytic activity, and are in high demand for a large number of cutting-edge technologies in the modern world including the production of mobile phones, fuel cells, displays, permanent magnets for wind power generation, high-capacity batteries, green energy devices, etc (Naumov, 2008). REEs tend to be intimately associated within many minerals, and are rarely found in high concentrations in deposits for economic extraction. Up to now, among over 250 minerals containing REEs, bastnasite (Ce), monazite (Ce, Th and La) and xenotime (Y) are the three main minerals that contain sufficient grade of REEs for commercial exploitation (Zhang and Edwards, 2012). The deposits that contain bastnäsite, monazite and xenotime usually have complicated mineral compositions, with various valuable minerals of fine embedded grain sizes in association with complex gangue minerals. In order to ensure liberation of the REEs minerals, fine grinding to less than 30 µm is necessary. This fine grinding leads to difficulty in recovering a large proportion of fine and ultrafine particles in separation processes such as flotation (Trahar and Warren, 1976). Consequently, highly liberated and ultrafine fine valuable REEs particles are lost into tailings during traditional mechanical flotation. Besides, the formation of extremely sticky and stable froth inhibits the drainage of hydrophobic particles. Thus, improving flotation of rare earth bearing minerals, particularly the ultrafine size range, is highly desirable."

Mechanical activation of gibbsite [?-Al(OH)3] is the theme of this paper. Industrially prepared gibbsite used in the study has a mono modal size distribution with a median size, d50=110 µm. Mechanical activation of this gibbsite has been carried out in a planetary mill at ambient conditions. Mechanical activated gibbsite samples are characterised in terms of particulate characteristics, structural characteristics and reactivity. As a result, of milling, mono modal size distribution of the unmilled gibbsite changes to a broad multimodal distribution. Size reduction has been sharp in the initial stages of milling; median size reduces to ~7 µm during 15 min of milling. Thereafter no decrease in median size is observed; rather it is found to increase gradually with further increase in milling time, indicating particle aggregation. Morphological studies of milled gibbsite have shown that the platelets forming the agglomerate are separated first; the separated platelets then undergo breakage. Aggregation of particles sets in the later stages of milling as a result of increased surface area and surface energy. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) studies have clearly revealed the changes in gibbsite structure during milling. Analyses of XRD data show that the crystallite size of gibbsite decreases as the milling time progresses whereas its microstrain is found to increase. Accumulation of energy in the structure is the result in both cases. TEM micrographs with signs of defects leading to disordering of gibbsite structure complement the XRD results. Reactivity of milled gibbsite, decrease in its deydroxylation temperature and increase in alkali dissolution, is found to increase with mechanical activation. Increased reactivity of milled gibbsite is found to have a strong correlation with the BET specific surface area. Oxidized zinc ores are the main source of zinc metal except sulfides. To have a better understanding about the performance of smithsonite and the main gangue, quartz, in flotation, the aggregation behaviors of smithsonite and quartz in water were confirmed by different techniques (sedimentation tests and optical microscopy). The experimental results show that smithsonite and quartz particles aggregate in the pH range 7.5-11. The results of zeta potential suggest that the aggregation does not correlate with the DLVO theory, when the iso-electric point of smithsonite and quartz is 8.0 and 2 respectively. When the solution pH is less than 8.0, smithsonite has an opposite charge to the quartz particles. Electrostatic adsorption makes effort on these two kinds of particles according to DLVO theory. Whereas, solution chemistry calculation shows the pH range 8-11 corresponds to hydroxide formation, suggesting that this is the species responsible for aggregation. And their concentrations are much higher in sodium hydroxide system than that in sodium carbonate system. Aggregation of smithsonite and quartz due to the flocculation action of zinc hydroxide is proposed.

With the increasing applications of the Chinese metal magnetic liners, the requirement for their technical specifications has become stricter and stricter. It is necessary to deeply analyse the metal magnetic liners in order to improve their reliability and economics. The key issue of metal magnetic liners is magnetic forces: their attractions to mill shell and protection layer. Mathematical models were developed using finite-element analysis software and systematic simulation analyses of the two most critical indexes of magnetic liners were performed to find out the most important parameters and their effect on the liner?s characteristics. The relationships between magnetic forces and installation gaps, thickness of permanent magnets and thickness of protection layer may be used to guide the design of metal magnetic liners for ball mills in order to achieve good economic indexes.
