The conditions for rockburst occurrence are traditionally identified as: high stress, high extraction ratio, strong brittle rocks, folding, faulting, and unfavourable excavation geometry. Based on a critical review of case histories, this paper identifies oblique loading of orebodies by the major far field principal stress as a cause of rockbursts. Orebodies subjected to this loading condition are termed orebodies in shear. Orebodies in shear are subjected to compressive and shear loads. The case histories presented unambiguously show that the magnitudes of the far field principal stress alone, and a knowledge of the conventional rockburst causing factors are not sufficient for mine planning and design. The orientation of the major far field principal stress, or for that matter the driving stress relative to the orebody axis, should be recognised as one of the causes of rockbursts. It is suggested that since stress orientation is an important factor, and orientations from stress measurements are so variable, orientations from stress measurement data be complemented with underground observations from borehole and excavation breakouts to determine the actual in situ stress orientation, whenever possible. Also stress modelling for the design of critical elements (pillars) should include a sensitivity analysis on the relative critical field stress direction. Pit Optimisation using the Lerchs Grossman algorithm has been successfully applied in many deposits. Pit shells often form the basis for scheduling. Pre-assigned costs may not accurately reflect the costs that strategic scheduling decisions are based on. This can affect all mines, but is particularly true for commodities requiring blending. The Est Malartic mill has been treating massive sulphide, copper/gold ore from the Bousquet 2 mine since 1989. The need to minimize copper content in flotation tails which are leached for gold recovery and to produce a saleable copper concentrate led to the evaluation of Conventional, Column and HG flotation methods. The HG method was preferred and two full-scale cells were installed and operated over a two-year span. In 1992, it was decided to expand the mill capacity from 1500 tpd to 2500 tpd. A total of nine additional HG Tank Cells were installed to provide additional roughing and cleaning capacity. The expanded plant has been operating since June 1993.

The last few years have seen considerable consolidation of the mining software industry and a trend towards greater planning and production control system integration, particularly for surface mines. The mining industry is starting to realize the benefits of system integration and will continue to drive the evolutions of these systems. Several trends can now be observed. The trends include application and system integration, data portability, ?intelligent? systems for support of decision-making activities, mine process-control and automation. While many planning systems are moving in this direction, there is room for considerable improvements. This paper will discuss these trends, examine the current state-of-the-art in mine design software, and identify areas where improvements should be made and why.

In order to remain competitive, the search for excellence has been and will remain the only viable option facing the Mount-Wright operations. Safety and environment, process and technology as well as cost performance have been the focus points on which the operations have concentrated their efforts in order to meet and exceed our company's "Vision 2000" plan. Some of our mine's accomplishments have been a new work organization, a world class maintenance and a new collective agreement. The concentrator, maintenance and production departments have evaluated their processes and implemented various improvements in areas such as power supply, dewatering, blasting, implementation of service centers for large and small vehicles, fleet standardization, crusher, mills and silos improvements... etc. Safety and work environment for personnel have been our driving force in order to achieve this plan.

CO adsorption on gold particles deposited on well-ordered alumina and various iron oxide films has been studied with temperature programmed desorption (TPD) and infrared reflection adsorption spectroscopy (IRAS). Structural characterization has been performed with scanning tunneling microscopy. Data show that the CO adsorption exhibits a size effect in that small particles adsorb CO more strongly. The effect generally vanishes after annealing to 500 K. For annealed samples, CO TPD and IRAS spectra are nearly independent of the particle size and supports studied. The results indicate that the CO interaction with gold surfaces is essentially similar and involves low coordinated atoms.

Reducing SAG Mill feed size has been a major trend in recent years. ‘Mine to mill’ strategies have reduced blasted-rock size, and in a growing number of operations reducing the primary crusher CSS and/or adding additional crushing upstream of the SAG mill have reduced rock feed size. While reducing feed size will increase SAG mill throughput, issues arise in terms of retaining charge in the mill, exposing the shell lining to impact damage, and maintaining milling performance should the pre-crush system shut down. This paper reviews the past experience on pre-crushing for SAG mills and provides an analysis of liner design (in particular grates and shell liners) for pre-crushed feed.

A six-stage sequential leaching procedure was used to assess the leachability of heavy metals from waste rock in Antamina Mine. Sequential extractions procedure is well established for fine and small (? 1g) samples. However procedures for coarse and large test samples are lacking. This study presents results of the sequential leaches tests conducted on relatively coarse and large representative samples in terms of the availability and mobility of metals. Selective chemical reagents were used to extract metals from six different fractions where metals released with each subsequent extraction are believed to be bound tighter than those released in prior steps and therefore less likely to be leached.

There are two things on everyone's lips when mining folks gather these days - one is the exciting business opportunities that now exist for mine development and expansion, and the other is the dire shortage of human resources needed to design, manage, and even operate the mines. Years of stagnant industry growth, limited employment opportunities, and unwarranted perceptions of remote and harsh working conditions have caused mining to be a less than desirable career choice. Attrition and reduced entry to the workforce has resulted in shortages for not only mining professionals, but also skilled trades people and operators. Consequently, to survive, let alone grow, mining companies, suppliers, and educators are all pursuing innovative solutions with technology, inter-industry recruiting, centralized services, and strategic partnerships. This paper describes some of these initiatives and proposes others, now that the people are gone!

Waste-rock piles from metal mining operations are comprised of large surface deposits of unsaturated, coarse-grained soil and rock. The unsaturated condition and heterogeneous, coarsegrained nature of these deposits make them difficult to monitor or characterize. Key parameters that must be evaluated include; volume-mass relationships (e.g. water content, air content, porosity, density, degree of saturation, grain-size), transport properties (e.g. air-permeability, gas diffusion, hydraulic conductivity), geochemistry (e.g. solids, gas, and fluid phases) and soilatmospheric fluxes (water and gas). This paper describes some of the techniques that have been developed to characterize waste rock piles for uranium mines in Northern Saskatchewan. For each technique, the method of measurement is described, and preliminary field data are presented and discussed.

The blast furnace today continues as the primary production method of hot metal in large-scale steel production. The blast furnace process has been the target of repeated attempts to replace it with various process options, including direct reduction and coke-free smelting reduction. While these new technologies are being adopted in appropriate niches, the blast furnace has responded to the challenge by being amenable to continuous improvement. I will review the role of the blast furnace, major developmental and improvement trends, and then list the current important issues in ironmaking. I will outline the challenges to be faced by the blast furnace to maintain its position as the primary hot metal production process. The material presented here is an update of earlier presentations made in Stockholm, Sweden, 1996, Duluth, 1998 and Chicago, 2000.

This paper is derived from a document that compiles autogenous and semi-autogenous mill installations worldwide, through the end of 2010. Updates have been solicited from all major mill manufacturers and most have responded. A review of AG/SAG mills sold to date and in the last five years indicates that the AG/SAG mill market is very healthy and the trend is larger diameter mills with high diameter-to-length ratios. Ring motors (gearless) are the preferred drives for large mills even though the power transmitted through a gear drive is expected to near 11,000 kW per pinion in the near future.

What is the future sustainability of the Canadian gold industry? ANSWERS: ?? The gold discovery costs in real terms only increased slightly from 1946 to 2000. ?? Though the Canadian gold industry mined more gold than they discovered in the period, when undeveloped deposits are taken into account, the deficit was merely 12 million ounces. ?? The Canadian gold mining industry would be sustainable in the foreseeable future, particularly, given the overwhelming predicted promising gold market in the mid/long run.

This paper briefly describes the current state of underground coal gasification (UCG) processes globally and in the Slovak Republic. Recent results of laboratory and technical tests are presented. In addition, on site measurements have added new knowledge of UCG technology. A series of laboratory tests based on physical models shows promise for managed UCG process control.
