Rapid analytical assessment in copper mining industry is a limiting factor for operational purposes and for the improvement of processes. The present work aims to review the analytical assessment in the copper industry utilizing emerging spectrochemical techniques such as laser induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) and UV-Vis-IR Hyperspectral Sensing. LIBS is a plasma based spectroscopic method where the sample surface is irradiated by high power laser. The light emitted from the plasma contains atomic -molecular spectral information and can be detected using a simple CCD based spectrometer. UV-Vis-IR Hyperspectral Sensing is produced by the reflection of light from the sample’s rough surface in all directions and it can be collected by using an ellipsoid or paraboloid mirror arrangement. The electromagnetic radiation emitted by the samples in the UV-Vis, NIR and MIR region can be used for molecular characterization. The spectrometer splits different wavelengths through a CCD arrangement in 2D spatial and spectral dimensions, thus a hyperspectral cube of data is generated. Chemometric techniques such as principal component analysis (PCA), K- nearest neighbors (KNN), support vector machine (SVM) among others, can be applied to LIBS and Hyperspectral data for better classification and quantification purposes in copper ores. Real- time determination of elemental and mineral species used for online processing control will help to achieve the copper industry 4.0. INTRODUCTION The demand for copper mineral resources is intensely growing with the increase in population, per capita GDP, the development of new technologies and the increase in global living standard. With the rise in consumption of copper, it is important to optimize mining and metallurgical processes tending to the copper industry 4.0 (Ge, Song, Ding, & Huang, 2017). The real-time analytical assessment in the mining and metallurgical processes is a crucial part for allowing the global improvement in mining industry. The features considered for better analytical assessment are the instrumental automation and interconnection, real time results, low cost, quality in terms of accuracy and precision. Furthermore, improving recovery (extraction), timing and quality of final products avoiding environmental impacts. Some elements such as Cu, Fe, Ag, Au, Mo, S, As, Pb, Zn are important to be determined in the process control. Additionally, rapid mineral identification of few species such as CuFeS2, Cu4FeS5, FeS2, CuS, Cu2S, MoS2, Cu3AsS4, FeAsS, among other can be challenging.

A drop tower and methodology were developed to study the impact of mineralogy on the flash combustion behaviour of copper concentrates. Reaction shaft conditions of a flash furnace were simulated using a drop tower reactor and different molar ratios of oxygen gas to sulphur in the feed. Five feeds were tested in the drop tower including pure minerals chalcopyrite and pyrite as well as two mineralogically distinct copper concentrates and a blend of the two. The behaviour of each of these five feeds were evaluated through analysis of the solid combustion products for elemental sulphur, mineralogy and particle size. Desulphurization curves for each of the feeds were produced. It is thought that the desulphurization behaviour of pure minerals can be used to estimate the behaviour of a concentrate and that a blending recipe could be developed, which can optimize the chemical and mineralogical inputs to the flash furnace and guide operations on the optimum furnace conditions. Overall, the drop tower has proven to be a useful tool for studying flash combustion processes. Experimental results suggest that mineralogy has a significant impact on the conditions required for the production of matte with consistent grade. This finding is especially significant for custom smelters, which may see several different blends in a day. INTRODUCTION Flash furnace smelting is a continuous feed, batch tap, pyrometallurgical process that is used to produce copper matte from copper sulphide concentrates. Dried concentrate(s), silica flux, and secondary materials are blended to a target chemical composition, typically given by the Cu/S ratio, before processing. This fine, dried feed is dispersed throughout the heated furnace reaction shaft with an O2-enriched reaction gas. The particles heat up in the shaft of the furnace, ignite and undergo reactions that pre-oxidize the iron sulphide and some of the impurities in the feed. Oxidation reactions in the shaft of the furnace desulphurize the feed and produce an SO2-containing off gas. The reacted particles fall into the furnace settler and separate into a Cu-rich matte and an iron-silicate slag, while the SO2-containing off gas is carried out of the furnace for heat and dust recovery, as well as H2SO4 production. Some concerns during operation of the furnace are dusting, over or under oxidation of the feed, and a stable flame.

The increasing complexity of the ores composition worldwide calls for suitable collectors with specific properties, such as selectivity, wettability, and in regard to current regulations, environmental sustainability. Therefore, collectors have to satisfy many features to improve the efficiency of flotation processes. Cellulose nanocrystals gain more and more interest due to the versatile synthesis routes which enable the integration of specific functional groups and components with different degrees of hydrophobicity within the molecular structure. Consequently, cellulose nanocrystals can be employed in flotation processes as depressant or collector molecules, respectively. Nonetheless, the usage of cellulose nanocrystals is still limited due to a lack of the characterization of nanocrystal-mineral interactions and the change of the surface wetting properties of minerals after adsorption phenomena between nanocrystals and minerals. In these studies, butyl-amine cellulose nanocrystal (BAC) and quartz are used as model system to investigate physicochemical properties of both, BAC and quartz, and examine the applicability of BAC in flotation processes. Therefore, the surface charge distribution and electrophoretic mobility of BAC and quartz are investigated and compared to understand the effect of electrostatic interactions between BACs, and BAC and quartz. Based on this, the adsorption of BAC on quartz is examined. Finally, microflotation experiments test the efficiency of BAC to be used in flotation processes. The flotation response is correlated to the specific surface charge of BAC revealing the dominant effect of surface charges on effective particle-bubble adhesions.

"The fine fraction of tailings is usually excluded from the backfill process and generally disposed on the surface in tailings ponds. Because of the ever increasing demand for fine grinding in the extraction process for improved liberation of valuables in the ore, increased production of fines in the tailings has resulted. The negative impact of surface impoundment of tailings on the environment is well known. Amaratunga and Annor (1989) first presented a concept of fine tailings agglomeration for backfill.This paper presents the development of the novel cold-bond tailings agglomeration (CBTA) technology for non-reactive fine gold mill tailings. For cold-bond agglomeration regular portland cement was used as a binder. In order to cut costs, alternate binders such as lime, and blast furnace slag cement were examined. The effects of binder dosage, curing time, and agglomerate size on the fracture load strength of the agglomerate were studied.Fine tailings agglomerates are mixed with coarse tailings or non-agglomerated fine tailings to make high density fill compositions to be used as underground backfill. Alternatively, the agglomerates can be used as aggregates for surface applications. The paper discusses the environmental and operational benefits of this total tailings utilization and disposal technology.IntroductionIn Canadian mines, mill tailings are probably the most commonly used material for backfill. However, only the coarse fraction of tailings is desirable for use as hydraulic fill or high density fills. The fines are disposed on the surface in tailings ponds since they are unsuitable for underground backfilling owing to the following factors:i) slow settling ratesii) longer percolation timeiii) excessive consumption of binder due to drainageiv) poor compactionFor improved value liberation more milling operations have resolved to fine grinding in their comminution circuits. Gold milling operations driven by down stream leaching processes grind their ores excessively fine. In general, gold mines use hardly any tailings for backfilling. This can result in periodic short falls and the need to search for alternate backfill material from other sources. Apparently, the gold producers are the most identifiable sector which suffer from a shortage of backfill materials ( Amaratunga and Annor, 1989)."

"Résumé - Le gite de Pb-Zn de Gays River s'accompagne d'anomalies des propriétés de la matière organique (MO) et des assemblages de minéraux d'argile (AMA). L'association entre la minéralisation, la distribution de la réflectance de la MO et des AMA suggère que ces traceurs peuvent servir à I ‘exploration des sulfures de métaux de base dans cette région.A I ‘emplacement du gîte, la réflectance varie considérablement (0,8% à 1,88%), pouvant même afficher une baisse avec I ‘enfouissement, ce qui est interprète comme une altération chimique de la MO. Les valeurs les plus élevées s'accompagnent localement de quelques textures en mosaïque et délimitent une anomalie thermique au centre sud de la région. Parmi les minéraux des argiles identifies, I ‘illite et la chlorite sont terrigènes alors que la smectite, la kaolinite et la corrensite sont authigènes et, à l' instar de I ‘altération de la MO, résultent des nouveaux équilibres chimiques créés suite à la précipitation des sulfures.Abstract - The Gays River Pb-Zn ore deposit is associated with anomalies defmed from the characters of the organic matter (OM) and from the clay minerals assemblages. The relationships between these anomalies and the mineralization at the mine suggest that these parameters can be used as new guides for the exploration for base-metal sulfides in this area.The vitrinite reflectance (RJ shows a wide range of values (0.8% to 1.88%) and exhibits an anomalous suppressive effect with depth of burial at the mine site, suggesting a chemical alteration of the OM. The highest R"" values are associated with mosaic textures and outline a therrnal anomaly at the south-center of the studied area. Among the identified clay minerals, illite and chlorite are terrigenous, whereas smectite, kaolinite and corrensite are authigenous and, like the alteration of the OM, are due to the new chemical equilibria resulting from the precipitation of the sulfides."

"Bayan Obo mixed RE concentrate is the largest RE source in the world. RE elements occur dominantly in bastnaesite and monazite. This paper describes a clean and green technique for processing Bayan Obo mixed rare earth (RE) concentrate. A two-step oxidation method can lead to the effective recovery of REs, thorium (Th), fluorine (F) and phosphorus (P). Ce has a property of valency change, enabling the separation of it from other RE(III) elements. Making use of the interactions of cerium (IV) (Ce(IV)), F and P, a new extraction system was created to separate Ce(IV) effectively from other RE(III) while recovering F, P and Th by complexing F and P following the oxidation of Ce(III) to Ce(IV). The method includes two parts. Firstly, bastnaesite is oxidized by air roasting and sulfuric acid leaching. And then a first leach liquor containing Ce(IV), F and P is obtained. Secondly, monazite was converted into REhydroxide through alkaline attack and then Ce(III) in the RE-hydroxide was oxidized into Ce(IV) by wetair oxidation. After sulfuric acid leaching the oxidized RE-hydroxide, a second leach liquor is obtained. The two parts of leach liquor containing Ce(IV), F and P are then extracted by Cyanex923 to obtain CeO2, CeF3 and CePO4 based on the complex of Ce(IV) with F and P. The raffinate was further extracted by the primary amine N1923, and Th-product was recovered as ThO2. The RE elements recovery yield during the whole process is greater than 92%. The new technique not only provides a new way for Bayan Obo RE ore utilization, but also avoids resource waste and environment pollution.INTRODUCTIONRare Earths (REs) refer to lanthanides, including scandium and yttrium. Owing to the similar structure and property of RE(III), it is difficult to separate them from each other, especially for the adjacent elements. According to the United States Geological Survey, in 2010, the whole world has about 142 million tonnes of rare earth reserves. In that, China ranks the second with 22% following Brazil which ranks first with 32% (Cheng, 2011). There are three main RE ore types in China with about 80% mixed ores in Bayan Obo, 10% bastnaesite ores in SiChuan and ShanDong province and 2.9% ion adsorption ores in Southern China. Bayan Obo mixed RE concentrate consists of bastnaesite and monazite. The concentrate contains CeO2/_REO of 50% and there are 7–8% F, 4-6% P and 0.2–0.3% Th."

The development of the Gubin lignite deposit, located in western Poland is the first mining investment of this magnitude in 30 years. Gubin is the second largest prospective lignite deposit in Poland, with over one billion tonnes of indicated reserves, which would be sufficient for a 2700 MW power plant for almost 50 years. The paper presents select problems related to the mining development of Gubin deposit. Attention has been paid to changes in legal and formal requirements for mining investments that were introduced after the change of Polish social and economic system. The significance of spatial, environmental and social conditionings has been emphasized. Typical attributes of the mine planning process have also been presented. Those include the long time horizon of the investment, uncertainty of external conditions and resulting difficulties in the project?s economic evaluation. Focus has been placed on mutual connections between particular elements of the project and time dependence during the process of their development. Iterative characteristics of the design process have been proven, together with resulting necessity of frequent verification of previous assumptions. As a background for presenting selected problems related to future development of Gubin lignite deposit, the methods of design have been discussed ? the variants method, the empirical method and the method of consecutive approximations. The tools and the possibilities of their use for solving specific problems related to mine design of an open pit have been broadly discussed. The chapter in which the authors relate to the specific problems of Gubin deposit development constitutes the main part of the paper. It depicts the assumptions on which the annual production and the total extraction of lignite during life-of-mine period have been based. The process of mine designing has been discussed, taking into consideration environmental, geotechnical, spatial, social and mining conditions. The criteria for choosing the location of the opening cut and the external dump have been mentioned. In the summary, the present state of mine design progress has been presented, together with some problems that will need to be solved during the next stages of the deposit?s development.

"All attempts to remove significant amounts of arsenic from enargite via neutral or reductive pyro routes have required operating temperatures between 600 and 700 º C, too high to propose an equipment development program. Operating at reduced pressures, or using hydrogen or elemental sulphur as a sweeping gas did not help to lower these temperatures. Admixing iron powder gave excellent results, but still required 700 º C. By fortuity, in recent experiments to produce tennantite from an enargite mineral sample, it was observed that enargite was completely converted to bornite, chalcopyrite with minor residual tennantite within an hour at 400-450 ºC. This is believed to be due to the presence of pyrite in the mineral sample treated. All earlier decomposition work appears to have been done on predominantly enargite (i.e. low pyrite) samples, or at high operating temperatures, ignoring possible reactions at lower temperature. The decomposition of enargite into iron substituted tennantite plus some bornite under evolution of liquid elemental sulphur, followed by further decomposition of this tennantite into bornite and volatile arsenic sulphides, appears experimentally feasible at these low temperatures and mimics described ore genesis pathways at > 250 ºC in saline solutions. "Copper is considered one of the most important industrial metals because of its properties (conductivity, malleability) and variety of uses. Approximately 70% of the global copper is used for various electrical applications, with a significant part of copper originating from recycling, since copper can be recycled and re-used countless times, without any loss of performance and difference in the quality of recycled copper in comparison to that from ore. Copper recycling significantly contributes to natural resources conservation, waste minimization, energy saving, and overall cost reduction. Approximately, 35% of the globally produced copper originates from recycled copper.The objective of the current work is to investigate the recovery of copper from electric wire scraps using wet shaking table as an alternative to air separation methods that prevail over the wet ones in recycling processes. The tests were carried out using feed of correspondingly high- and low-grade in copper. In the first case, the wire scraps had been subjected to shredding only, prior to tabling separation; in the later, the low-content tailing of prior air separation was used as feed ?n table separation.In regard to testing, the following factors were examined: table tilt, water flow-rate, and reciprocating speed. The results of the tests clearly denote that copper wire separation from plastic polymer is feasible, as in most cases, table separation resulted in heavy products of high purity in copper and high recovery, and tailings of very low copper grade. The results of the current work clearly denote that wet tabling can be applied efficiently for the separation of recycled copper wire from plastic, as an alternative to air separation methods, as well as for the recovery of copper from the low-grade tailings derived from air separation methods."

Numerous research studies have shown that clay rock formations exhibit favourable characteristics for the deep geological disposal of radioactive waste. However, one main concern is that the favourable long-term isolation properties of the intact rock mass could be negatively affected by the formation of an excavation damaged zone (EDZ) around the underground openings. The goal of this paper is to present new rock mechanics insights into the phenomena involved in the EDZ formation and evolution processes in Opalinus Clay, a clay shale currently being assessed as a potential host rock for an underground repository in Northern Switzerland. More specifically, discontinuum-based computer simulations, using a hybrid finite-discrete element method (FDEM) approach, were applied to two case studies considering circular excavations in an anisotropic Opalinus Clay formation. In the first case study, numerical modelling was applied to the HG-A experiment, a long-term in-situ test carried out at the Mont Terri underground rock laboratory to investigate the hydro-mechanical response of a backfilled and sealed microtunnel. A mechanistic analysis of the fracturing processes involved in the EDZ formation was carried out. In the second case study, the long-term effect of the bentonite backfill swelling on the EDZ around an emplacement was numerically analyzed. Overall, the simulation results highlight short-term distinctive rock failure kinematics due to the bedded rock structure, as well as a long-term reduction of the excavation-induced fracture porosity in response to mechanical loading.

"Discrete transfer functions which use the grinding circuit feed tonnage to predict mass flowrates at reagent addition points in a flotation circuit were calibrated using a dynamic grinding/flotation circuit simulator. Predicted mass flow values are multiplied by reagent addition ratios to obtain actual reagent flow. The transfer functions are currently integrated into the distributed control system of Les Mines Selbaie.IntroductionThe development of adequate tools for the control of flotation processes is a continuous challenge. Since the early 1970s there have been numerous publications dealing with practical aspect of control of flotation processes. Most plants use a combination of feedback and feedforward controls to reduce the effect of the following flotation process disturbances (McKee, 1991):• changes in throughput;• changes in feed grade;• changes in particle floatability (size, liberation, surface oxidation ... ); and • deliberate changes of setpoint;Feedforward control manipulates variables such as reagent and/or air flow rate to attenuate the effect of disturbances such as changes of feed rate and mineral content. The feed forward strategy is driven by measurements of these disturbances. Feedback control is used to maintain process variables to targeted set-points of concentrate or tails grades. The feedback control action is driven by deviation from the set-point, caused by a deliberate change of set-point or disturbances.This paper proposes a method to improve feed forward control schemes by the addition of a simple model for solids transportation. The feedforward strategy considered in this paper is the ratio type, in which the manipulated variable is changed according to a predefmed ratio between this variable and the measured disturbance. A typical example is the ratio of the reagent addition to mass flow of ore.The paper reviews the state of the art in feed forward control strategy applied to flotation processes and describes the method used for predicting mass flow rates. The last section shows an application of the method in the Les Mines Selbaie flotation circuit."

All of this can be done long before any damage is done to the equipment.Monitoring Trend AnalysisIt is no longer necessary to compromise in selecting products, since state-of-the-art designs allow the adjustment in such small increments that the users are able to detect minute changes in a system's performance.Monitoring and trending of motors and equipment bearings is now available in economical packages which can be expanded as a system grows. Simply select the information you need, set the parameters, choose the scan time, and decide on the degree of reporting.Buffer storage of short-term monitoring of a number of analogue channels permit the user to view the recent history of motor data such as: motor average load, unbalance, motor current, ground fault, reserve thermal capacity, plus all of the settings of the protective device.A decision can be made to freeze the stored information after the motor stops or after the motor starts. Then the user is able to recall the conditions and diagnose the performance and the cause of the abnormal condition. Typical scan times range from ¼ second to 5 seconds ."

One fundamental requirement for surface and underground rock engineering is the ability to characterise the rock mass. An accurate characterisation of the rock mass allows rock engineers to optimize designs safely and economically. A number of classification systems have been developed in the past 50 years to help characterise rock masses such as RMR, Q system, Rmi, and several others. The challenge in developing rock characterisation schemes is often practicality, i.e. creating systems with relatively simple inputs for the everyday practitioner. A second challenge is the degree of subjectivity often inherent in commonly used classification systems. These challenges are especially exacerbated in weak rock or densely jointed rock masses. This paper introduces a new approach to characterise densely jointed rock mass using artificial neural networks and principal component analysis, based on principles commonly used in the geotechnical engineering of rock fills and waste rock dumps. Thirteen input parameters are dimensionally compressed using principal component analysis. Using a global database with more than 100 case histories, an artificial neural network is developed to conduct the rock mass characterisation. The advantage of this approach is less subjectivity as commonly used engineering (quantitative) terms are put to use. A further advantage is that given that the method is site-data dependent, it allows for ‘fine tuning’ of the model for a specific site.

Elle est composée de quatre modèles: (1) un modèle de pénétration conduisant à la prévision du temps de forage; (2) un modèle d'estimation de la durée de vie des fournitures; (3) un modèle d'estimation de fa quantité d'énergie consommée; et (4) un modèle de calcul de couts. Elle fait intervenir la résistance en compression uniaxiale de la roche du massif foré, le diamètre des trous, Ie type de perforatrice utilise, fa pression d'air d'opération, la longueur des fleurets, les temps morts associes au forage ainsi que le rendement des compresseurs, des perforatrices et du réseau de distribution de l’air comprime. L 'application de la méthodologie est illustrée à l’'aide d'un exemple, suivi d'une courte analyse de sensibilité et d'une brève discussion. ABSTRACTA drilling cost estimation methodology for underground headings is described. This methodology has been developed for percussive hand-held drills. It comprises four models: (1) a drillability model used for the prediction of the drilling period; (2) a model for the prediction of bit and rod lives; (3) an energy model; and (4) a cost model. It makes use of the uniaxial compressive strength ofthe rock drilled, hole diameter, drill type used, operating air pressure, drilling rod length, dead times that may occur during the drilling operation as well as compressor, air distribution network and drilling machine efficiencies. The application of the methodology is illustrated with an example, followed by a short sensitivity analysis and brief discussion."

Fasten your seatbelts, there may be more to come. IntroductionThe draft legislation released on April 13 contains the details of the government's current proposals on car expenses and benefits. They differ significantly from the last announced position. Finance Minister Wilson has indicated that the release in draft form will provide an opportunity for the Commons Standing Committee on Finance and Economic Affairs (the Blenkarn committee) and other interested persons to comment before the legislation is introduced in Parliament. Accordingly, there may yet be revisions.Notwithstanding the prospect of further changes, the proposed rules generally come into force in 1988. "Bioleaching offers a potential approach for recovery of rare earth elements (REE) from recyclable materials, such as fluorescent lamp phosphors or degraded industrial catalysts. Microorganisms were enriched from REE-containing ores and recyclable materials with the goal of identifying strains capable of extracting REE from solid materials. Over 100 heterotrophic microorganisms were isolated and screened for their ability to produce organic acids capable of leaching REE. The ten most promising isolates were most closely related to Pseudomonas, Acinetobacter and Talaromyces. Of the acids produced, gluconic acid appeared to be the most effective at leaching REE (yttrium, lanthanum, cerium, europium, and terbium) from retorted phosphor powders (RPP), fluidized cracking catalyst (FCC), and europium-doped yttrium oxide (YOEu). The Acinetobacter isolate, BH1, was the most capable strain and able to leach 33% of the total REE content from the FCC material. These results support the continuing evaluation of gluconic acid-producing microbes for large-scale REE recovery from recyclable materials.INTRODUCTIONAn enhanced recovery, substitute, reuse or recycle paradigm is important for balancing the supply and demand of critical materials (DOE, 2011). The recovery of rare earth elements (REE) from recyclable materials is an important component in this model. REE are used in a variety of modern products. For example, neodymium, europium, terbium, dysprosium, and yttrium are important for applications such as permanent magnets, lamp phosphors, rechargeable batteries, etc. (Binnemans, Jones, Blanpain, Van Gerven, Yang, Walton, & Buchert, 2013; DOE, 2011; Graedel, Harper, Nassar, & Reck, 2013). Cerium and lanthanum are used in glass polishers and additives in fluidized cracking catalysts (FCC)."

"IntroductionThe Highvale Mine is located 70 km west of Edmonton , Alberta on the south side of Lake Wabamun. It has been developed by TransAlta Utilities Corporation as a captive mine to supply fuel to two genera ting power plant s. The mine is owned by TransAlta and operated under contract by Manalta Coal. Within the mine permit area, TransAlta own s the right to mine 80% of the recoverable surface mineable coal.The planning process starts with the annually produced 25-year energy forecast which is provided by the Electric Utility Planning Council (EUPC). A 1983 forecast predicts an average annual increase in energy requirements of 4% over the next 25 years. Put another way, the requirement will double before the end of the century. A lar ge part of the base load generation of the Province of Alberta is provided by th e plants fueled from Highvale Mine. The Highvale Mine is therefore expected to maintain a high output over a long period of time.Mine PlanningMine planning is an ongoing, interative process that draws from many sources. All levels of planning draw from the same sources but du e to the different processes and objectives of each planning class, the degree of influence may differ. The planner becomes then a coordinator bringing together data and excerpts from several disciplines in groups. This requirement has stimulated a search for ways and means of applying modern management techniques to the design and construction of mineral processing plants.This search by consulting firms has resulted in the evolution of the concept of project management and the development of planning and con trolling techniques with the result that Owners can seek and obtain better assurance that their project objectives will be fulfilled.This paper will attempt to outline how a mineral processing plant can be brought into production through the implementation of project management techniques.Definition And Objectives Of Project ManagementThe design and construction of mineral processing plants is subject to the restraints of three inter-related parameters -Quality, Cost and Time each of which influences and is influenced by the other two.Project management is a technique where the Owner delegates complete responsibility to a single organization for all phases of a project (design, procurement, construction and commissioning) for the above parameters but retains freedom for major decision making. Normally, the consultant under-takes full responsibility for all phases, but partial project management services can be provided when the Owner so desires.The objective of project management is first to devise and define and then to implement a program in which the relationship between the three parameters of Quality, Cost and Time is optimized, i.e., the desired functional and other requirements are attained (but not exceeded) at the lowest practicable overall cost in the shortest practicable time. "This paper deals with the organization of the central office technical areas and the role played during the feasibility studies, construction and operating phases of Les Mines Selbaie.HistoryThe Engineering Department was originally formed as a part of the Exploration Department, to examine the feasibility of advanced exploration prospects being brought to the company. In 1968, with the discovery of the South Bay property in northwestern Ontario, the department became part of a Mining Division and was expanded, so that it could provide more advanced mine feasibility studies, control of construction engineering and procurement and initial mine design. As is generally the case, the mine design function was handled with in-house capability, while plant, mill and const ruction functions used outside consultants.The 1974 discovery of the Selbaie deposits, started a period o f growth in the capabilities o f the department. The complex nature of these deposits, required that skills were added in the mining, metallurgical and plant areas. During the early feasibility study period these skills were provided by the engineering company of the parent group, but when it was realized that production from the deposits was likely, permanent staff was added."
