Se describe el desarrollo del sistema y los provechos derivar se presenta.AbstractThe grinding circuit at Selbaie consists of SAG mill and ball mill closed circuit grinding. The SAG mill motor current is used to control throughput. This system stabilizes the circuit but does not actively optimize circuit performance. An expert system was developed to aid the optimization of the circuit by manipulating the set-points of existing PI control loops. The system was implemented with the Comdale /C expert system package and has been on line since May 1992. The expert system has resulted in a net increase in tonnage of 7tph and a decrease in annual grinding media costs of $210,000. The system development is described and the benefits derived are presented."

"Abstract - An estimation of resources of structurally complex gold lodes and stockworks represents a challenging task for geoscientists due to the complex geometry of the lodes and discontinuous grade. In the present case study, the resource of a gold stockwork has been estimated by uniform conditioning after the lode has been subdivided into geostatistically defined domains using the indicator probability model. The indicator probability model represents a powerful tool for structural interpretation of the mineralization and can be applied when traditional 3D volume constraining methods (wireframing) have failed to produce a unique, non-subjective model. For comparison, the resources of the same zone have been estimated without domaining. Results of the study clearly show that estimates obtained without domaining of the mineralization can yield a substantial error due to excessive smoothing of the grade.Application of uniform conditioning for modelling the grade distribution has a significant advantage over linear methods (e.g., ordinary kriging). Uniform conditioning enables estimation of local recoverable resources at different selective mining unit sizes that can be substantially smaller than the drilling density without creation of biases or over smoothed local values."

Hard-rock caverns for hydrocarbon storage are a very particular type of underground facility controlled not only by local administrative and regulatory constraints that can be very specific, but also by the possible risks of geotechnical or geomechanical failure. Each such facility throughout the world is a prototype that needs to be adapted to very different site conditions. The straight forward application of design methodologies from relatively similar fields (mines, tunnels) can be very useful, but risks holding back the scientific and technical improvements needed by an engineering industry in full development. Here we look at various case histories and at problems that have been raised where recent attempts at standardization would appear to have been ill adapted, and where storage designers, through experience and judgment, may still provide innovative engineering solutions.

"IntroductionIndustrial applications of mica utilize two commercially important varieties of mica: muscovite and phlogopite. Muscovite mica is a potassium mica with a general chemical formula, H2KA1(Si04)3 h, and is sometimes referred to as a potas hsilicate. Phlogopite is a magnesium mica having a general chemical formula, H2KMgSi(Si04)3, and is distinguished from the muscovite mica by its decomposition in sulphuric acid.Canada is one of the major natural mica producers in the world. A large tonnage of the mica powders is at present mined and processed in the Eastern Townships of Quebec. This Canadian mica is of the phlogopite type. A closely related mineral of the mica family which is widely used in the construction industry is vermiculite. It is a dehydrated magnesium-aluminum-iron silicate characterized by a foliated structure. Expanded vermiculite, which is often referred to as exfoliated mica, is used as many types of thermal and acoustic insulation, as loose fill in buildings, as an aggregate in concrete, as an ingredient in plaster and insulating concrete , and in fire-proofing compositions. Natural phlogopite and muscovite mica powders are used extensively as reinforcing agents in organic polymers. They also have a wide range of applications in commerical products. For example, dry-ground mica powders are used in large tonnage as a surface finish in roofing materials and as a bonding agent in wallboard joint cement. Common products such as paint, rubber, plastics and welding rods contain mica. Recent studies have also shown that mica powders can be added to portland cement in the preparation of concrete products, as they could improve the tensile strength of the concrete products. "Mine Doyon, in collaboration with CRM's Process Control Division, improved the control strategy at the SAG mill I Ball mill grinding circuit. The project aimed at increasing operation stability and throughput. First, a needs analysis was achieved in order to define the control philosophy and to upgrade the process control equipments and instrumentation. The stabilizing control strategy has been developed and implemented successfully using single loop PID controllers. The monitoring feature as well as the rule based supervisory control strategy were implemented on 486PCs running Process Vision and COMDALE/C softwares. "This paper describes the improvements made to the operation of a liquid phase, 300°C, heat transfer system in the paste plant of an aluminum smelter. These improvements were achieved by replacing the original heat transfer fluid, a synthetic aromatic, with a new technology, petroleum-based product. This new fluid, Calflo HTF, provided better thermal stability, with lower toxicity, and improved plant working conditions.The procedures for fluid selection, changeout and performance monitoring are described along with a summary of control analysis over the last three years."

"The Atlantic Coal Institute illustrates the potential for high technology employment in Maritime Canada, by using local talent and the latest equipment to address a national market. Since I983, contract research for industry and government has generated 31 man-years of high-tech employment, added $2.3 million to the local economy and contributed new technology for Canadian coal. Industry now has access to new procedures for coal minerals analysis, pyrolysis, and geochemistry applied to industrial problems of exploration, beneficiation, conversion and combustion.Research at the Institute is market-driven, based on cost recoveries from contracts. The financial performance to date exceeds that of similar industrial research institutes in major cities and demonstrates that small isolated laboratories are cost-effective. Economic renewal of Canada's resource industries will require increased R&D which in turn can be a source of local employment and pride. Small research teams are more efficient but require an enlightened policy of contracting-out by big business and big government."

The present study develops the numerical manifold method (NMM) as a tool to investigate the progressive failure in rock slopes. The entire processes of the progressive slide surface development related to crack initiation, propagation, coalescence and degradation to eventual catastrophic failure are successfully captured. To overcome the limitation of the original NMM associated with an improper removal of the interface cohesion of the discontinuities, the displacement-dependent cohesion removal method is adopted. Simple examples of failure of rock slopes containing different arrangements of discontinuities are modeled and their results are compared with those based on the popular limit equilibrium method proposed by famous pioneers Jennings and Jaeger. In cases of coplanar non-persistent discontinuities, close results are obtained despite the differences in the consideration of the stress concentrations at the crack/discontinuity tips. In cases of non-coplanar discontinuities, since the influence of the tensile strength is considered by both the Jaegers model and the NMM, the Factor of Safety (SF) values are similar despite the difference in the failure path trajectories predicted by these two models. The results also reveal that the original NMM without the displacement-dependent cohesion removal method is always more conservative due to the improper removal of the interface cohesion. The displacementdependent cohesion method can to some extent alleviate such a limitation.

"Abstract - Detrital minerals of upper mantle origin occur in Holocene conglomerates, pediments and antmounds, and in Oligocene conglomerates in the Green River Basin of southwestern Wyoming. The minerals are derived from disaggregated eclogite and peridotite, and are similar to minerals found in mantle- derived igneous rocks such as kimberlite and lamproite, the primary host rocks for diamond. The Green River Basin bisects the lamproite fields of the Leucite Hills (Wyoming) and Kamas (Utah) and overlies the Archean Wyoming craton, which makes the region favorable for diamond occurrence. Lamproite is the favored host for the indicator minerals because unusual high-Fe salitic diopside macrocrysts from the antmounds and from the ~1 Ma old Leucite Hills lamproites to the northeast are compositionally identical. The salitic diopside is uncommon in other igneous rocks and could be a new indicator mineral for use in lamproite exploration. The Green River Basin indicator minerals are eroded from the ~29 Ma old Bishop Conglomerate, whose source area is the Uinta Mountains to the south. No continuous mineral train exists between the Uinta occurrences and those in the Green River Basin. Assessment of the minerals using established and new geochemical criteria indicate that they formed in an oxidizing upper mantle and were transported to the surface by either kimberlite or lamproite. The existence of cogenetic diamond is unlikely based on the mineral chemistry, but selective removal of diamond indicator minerals through weathering and fluvial transport cannot be excluded. Diamonds and mantle garnets are present in the northeastern Uinta Mountains, but they originated as part of the Diamond Hoax of 1872. A representative mineral assemblage from the true igneous host of the indicator minerals is required to fully establish their economic potential. Post-Oligocene erosion and Pleistocene glaciation have hindered efforts to locate a bona fide igneous source for the indicator minerals. Résumé - Des minéraux détritiques provenant du manteau supérieur ont été trouvés dans des conglomérats, des pédiments et des monticules de fourmis de l’Holocéne, et dans des conglomérats de l’Oligocène du Green River Basin, au sud-ouest du Wyoming. Ces minéraux sont issus du démantellement d’éclogites et de péridotites, et sont semblables aux minéraux trouvés dans des roches ignées provenant du manteau, comme les kimberlites et les lamproïtes. It will also review the analysis of various case studies for the expansion of the project to its full potential, and discuss the impact of the recent structural change in the copper market on the development of a large low-grade deposit such as Valley.IntroductionIn 1964 Cominco participated, along with a number of other companies and individuals, in the formation of Valley Copper Mines Ltd. This company was formed in order to facilitate exploration on a large number of mineral claims held by these parties in British Columbia's Highland Valley, approximately 400 km northeast of Vancouver (Fig. I). Cominco 's ownership of Valley Copper was gradually increased over the years bot h through shares gained for exploration expenditures and through shares purchased on the open market. By the mid- 1970sCominco' s interest in Valley Copper exceeded 80%.ExplorationExploration from 1964 to 1969 led to the discovery of a massive porphyry copper depo sit now known as the Valley orebody. A claim boundary divided the deposit with 80% of it on Valley Copper claims and 20070 on claims held by Bethlehem Copper which was already mining adjacent copper orebodies. During the period when the Valley ore body was discovered, exploration by other companies resulted in the discovery of the large Lornex and Highrnont deposits nearby. The stage was now set for the Highland Valley to become an important copper-producing area (Fig. 2)."

"In China, the electromagnetic induction initiating system f or blasting engineering has been greatly developed in recent years. With this system, the total number of detonators that may be blasted in each round has been increased from 420 to 940 as a result of the invention of a powerful exploder, and the length of leg wires of a detonator has reached 12 metres. These developments make the new system suitable for blasting engineering of medium scale. Another attractive feature of this system is a set of testing instruments which have been invented that enable a final check of the system to be made before firing as in normal electric blasting. This paper reports on these developments.IntroductionThe initiating system for blasting explosives is one of the key factors to the success of blasting engineering, along with the progress of explosives and blasting technology. Today, we have initiating systems which may be divided into two groups: electric and non-electric. The earliest initiating system was non-electric. Many mines, as well as many projects where rock excavation was involved, were blasting non-electrically before the new nonelectric initiating system came into use in the 1970s. Electric and non-electric initiating systems are the two main initiating systems which are now being widely used, each having its advantages and disadvantages. In electric blasting, the blasting supplies and the blasting circuit can be checked before it is used or fired and, therefore, is regarded to be more reliable. In many large-scale blasting engineering where reliability of the initiation is of great concern, a checkable initiating system is preferable. The electric initiating system is not considered to be as safe as the non-electric initiating system due to its inability to choose proper ignition energy. Therefore, a non-electrical initiating system would be preferable where a hazard of stray currents or static electric energy exists. At this stage of development, one would say it would be advantageous to develop a new initiating system."

"When two discontinuities form a tetrahedral wedge in a rock slope, a factor of safety for the wedge can be simply calculated (if motion is driven only by gravity and resisted only by friction) from plots of the normals to discontinuities on an overlay of a polar, equal-area spherical projection to which the great circles of a similar equatorial projection have been added.IntroductionThe stability of slopes in rock masses is often controlled by the discontinuities that exist in the masses. In particular, the geometry of the discontinuities constrains the ways in which the mass may fail. Displaying the orientation of the discontinuities on a spherical projection has been found to be a useful way of identifying possible failure modes. The most concise display shows the orientation of the normals (or poles) to the discontinuities that compose the fabric of the rock mass. Computer processing of large samples of discontinuity orientations is necessary if the sampling biases identified by Terzaghi (1965) are to be routinely corrected. Fortunately, displays of the poles to discontinuities (or pi diagrams) are relatively easily produced on the line printer of a computer or by a computer plotter (Cruden , 1978; Ramsden and Cruden, 1979). Unfortunately, further analysis of the stability of a rock mass has tended to use traces of typical discontinuities on a spherical projection rather than pi diagrams; examples may be seen in Hoek and Bray's book (1981)."

"Plastic Filled Valley (PFV) wire rope represents a significant development over the design of conventional wire rope. A sealing thermoplastic is impregnated under controlled conditions of temperature and pressure into a conventional lubricated wire rope to produce a lattice of plastic which surrounds and separates the strands from each other and from the core. Metal-to-metal contact is thereby alleviated and the lubricant is sealed in. The wear resistance, rope breaking load, fatigue resistance and crushing resistance are all increased. The result is a rope which offers exceptional service life.Laboratory tests carried out in Canada and at the University of Stuttgart, in West Germany, confirm the increase in fatigue life. The field trials conducted so far have indicated that the results obtained in the laboratory can be duplicated in the field.IntroductionIn times of double -digit inflation, the consideration given to operating costs throughout industry commands considerable attention. The same can be said of the mining industry. A set of large-diameter wire ropes used on the huge draglines in strip mining can cost in excess of $100,000. Because a machine may use three sets of rope s each year, it is clear that the costs of wire rope can contribute a considerable percentage to any operating budget. As wire rope is a product which is used extensively throughout the mining industry, it would appear timely to turn our attention to any ""Method of Extending Wire Rope Service Life"" in order that wire rope life can be optimized and wire rope costs can be minimized."

Maintenance needs information about assets to optimize availability and production needs information about performance and consumption to maximize output. In considering both these needs together as, ?Asset Optimization?, the information systems that support them are critical. The theory of Asset Optimization derives from the Lean Manufacturing concepts developed by Toyota, but some changes are required to apply this to mining operations. In particular, mining operations require automated systems due to their geographic spread and they need a strong emphasis on capturing under-performance losses as well as delays and stoppages in production. Leading metal miners and coal miners alike have applied these systems to good effect in the last 10 years. The concepts developed initially in minerals processing plants are now being applied to the mines themsleves as well as the mining logistics chain. Production increases of 5?10% are achievable with the right implementation and consideration of the some key lessons learnt in the last 10 years. Putting these lessons into action is one key step in the goal of optimizing asset performance and thus utilizing the resource at lowest cost.

"The Chadbourne Project, located within the limits of the town of Noranda, Quebec, will make use of backfill materials to fill the voids left by the mining of stopes and pillars. A series of tests were conducted on different mixtures of slag and pyrrhotite tailings materials to evaluate their properties. The tests are described and some pertinent results are given in the paper.IntroductionThe Chadbourne Project is located in the centre of the Town of Noranda, Quebec, with houses as close as 120 m from the blasting operations. The ore is mined using the vertical crater retreat method. The voids left by mining activities will be filled. A program of pillar recovery will follow.Considering the proximity of houses and the need to recover pillars, the backfill program must be carefully laid out. No subsidence can be tolerated on surface.With these objectives in mind, a test program was undertaken by Nantar Engineering Limited and Queen's University to evaluate the possible ba ckfilling alternatives available to Chadbourne. One of the possibilities retained was the use of a backfill composed of broken slag material from the Horne Smelter and pyrrhotite tailings deposited on the Horne's pond a number of years previously.The back fill used at the Horne Mine until the mine closed in 1975 was composed of a mixture of 97% granulated slag and 3% pyrrhotite tailings. The tests leading to its use underground at the Horne Mine were described by Patton in 1952. The structural properties of the Horne backfill were ""intuitively"" known; it was agreed by all at the Horne Mine that the backfill was behaving remarkably well. Some were labeling it ""the best backfilling material in the world"". Its strength was said to be that of a weak concrete. All of the preceding indicate that the Horne backfill had never had its structural and other properties determined in the laboratory."
