"The use of large AG/SAG mills in the mineral industry has been on the rise recently due to a significant reduction in the capital and operating costs for achieving significant increases in plant throughputs. The major reason for downtimes in these mills is the time taken for the replacement of broken or worn liners. This loss of “availability” of these units has a significant impact on the productivity of these plant operations. The ability to predict liner life time and its evolving shape could help to optimize these comminution operations. In the past decades, various models have been proposed to estimate liner wear rate, but because of their empirical nature they could only be used within certain limited operating conditions. In this research, a phenomenological model which could predict the liner wear rate was proposed and tested. This model considers parameters such as; operating conditions, liner hardness, pressure on the lifter, and, relative velocity of particles and mill shell. Data from industrially measured liner profiles were taken during the liner life time at the Sarcheshmeh and the Gol-E-Ghohar SAG mills to provide a solid base to calibrate and validate the model. The comparison of the model predictions with the actual measurements of the liner wear rate showed that the results were in a good agreement at both, the Sarcheshmeh (R2=0.94), and the Gol-E-Ghohar (R2=0.97) concentrators.INTRODUCTIONAG/SAG mills are one of the most important technologies in the mineral processing industry in the recent decades. The “Availability” of these units in a plant operation is one of the most important economic parameter for evaluating their performance. The major reason for the downtime of these mills affecting their “availability”, is the time required to change worn or broken liners (Yahyaei, Banisi, & Hadizadeh, 2009; Maleki-Moghaddam, Yahyaei, & Banisi, 2012). The knowledge about the magnitude and profile of liner wear not only enables more accurate liner life estimation to prevent unwanted interruptions of the SAG milling in mineral processing plants and more strategically plan the scheduled mill outages for liner changes. It also could provide key information needed to select an appropriate liner design (Yahyaei et al., 2009; Rezaeizadeh, Fooladi, Powell, & Weerasekara, 2010a)."

"Abstract -Vanadium mineralization occurs in oxide-rich horizons within the layered gabbro zones of the upper parts of the Bell River Complex, Matagami, Québec and the Lac Doré Complex, Chibougamau, Québec. The vanadium-rich horizons are well defined on the ground and in aeromagnetic surveys by their high magnetic susceptibility; consequently, magnetic susceptibility can be an indicator of vanadium mineralization. The main oxide minerals are ilmenite and titanian magnetite, containing 20% to 70% of volume and the ratio of titanian magnetite to ilmenite is relatively constant, ranging from about 1:1 to 2:1. Their sizes are less than 5 µm to greater than 1 mm to 2 mm, occurring as coarse- to medium-grained subhedral crystals intergrown with cumulate silicate minerals (plagioclase, pyroxene, etc.). Electron microprobe analyses indicate that the ilmenite grains are mineralogically and compositionally homogeneous and have low V contents (average 0.18% equivalent V2O5). In contrast, the titanian magnetite grains are inhomogeneous, consisting of trellisworks of ilmenite lamellae in Ti-poor, V-rich magnetite [less than 2 wt% TiO2, and 1.41% equiv. V2O5 (1.16% V2O3) for 20 analyses]. Thus, the magnetite is the principal ore mineral of vanadium; it hosts vanadium in the form of V3+, not V5+, as is commonly and erroneously reported. We have also devised a flowchart for the beneficiation of vanadium-titanium ores. The experience of one plant regarding degradation of copper solvent extraction reagents in the presence of 20 to 30 g/1 nitrate in the leach solution was described at Cobre 2003. However, little information is available about the degradation of copper solvent extraction reagents where the nitrate concentration of leach solution is much lower. Analysis of plant organic samples taken from an operating copper SX plant over a long period of time shows that small amounts of nitrate in the leach liquor can be a significant contributor to reagent degradation provided certain other conditions are present. These conditions are discussed and cautionary suggestions on copper SX plant operations in the presence of even low levels of nitrate in the pregnant leach are made based on industry experience with copper solvent extraction plants and copper solvent extraction reagents.

"At the Falconbridge Limited, Canadian Nickel Division, Sudbury Operations, we investigated the ""NO NOISE"" ear muffs model NN3-F which is a Swedish product with foam-filled sealing rings (the Hellberg Standard Volume Hearing Protector). It is used extensively at Falconbridge mines in Sudbury.The research which was carried out in the four Falconbridge mines was conducted under three different headings: manufacturer's attenuation data (psychophysical method), clamping force and head size (bizygomatic diameter), and attenuation tests (physical methods) under working conditions.Manufacturers of hearing protectors claim their products offer noise reductions of 23 decibels (NRR) or more, but they fail to point out that this reduction is obtainable only under ideal conditions. The reality of attenuation under working conditions, as several studies have found, is quite different.Methods for using short measurements to determine the noise exposure index, and for controlling muff-wearing habits, were developed at the Elliot Lake Laboratory. Measurements taken at Falconbridge on ""NO NOISE"" ear muffs revealed that they have a practical attenuation of some IO to 13 decibels. It is important to note here that measurements also revealed that clamping force (thus attenuation) was in an inverse relationship with ear muff comfort. Measuring attenuation using noise dosimeters was a difficult job. Not a single surveyor would accept these measurements (physical method) for absolute accuracy. Apart from that, it was impossible to measure, in one shift, more than two work stations. Because of this, we sought a solution: measuring head size and clamping force in relation to actual attenuations.A detailed analysis of the relationship between attenuation and head size/clamping force was done at four mines. Standard deviation ellipses (standard error ellipses) for head size versus clamping force are in close agreement with measurements that were carried out. In order to measure clamping force an apparatus was constructed and a method for measuring suspension system durability is described in Appendices Band C of this report. At the same time we sought to reduce deterioration of ear muffs in mines as well as to put in place a system whereby attenuation can be controlled and improved. The clamping force apparatus can be operated automatically. The proposed control system is quick, simple and efficient . This system is equally applicable in small and large mining operations, and it can be totally automated and the data computerized for audit of the results. This control system is a new step in controlling ear muff attenuation in working environments.From these measurements of NN3-F ""NO NOISE"" muffs it can be concluded that ear muffs are not the total solution to protect the worker from noise.As the results were evaluated folio wing measurement, Falconbridge switched from the NN3-F ""NO NOISE"" muffs to approximately 90% Mark V ""NO NOISE"" muffs and 10% Mark V MSA muffs. These new muffs showed much better head size versus clamping force relationship and can be expected to produce 14 dBA or better attenuation of noise. This paper presents a summary of results from a questionnaire sent to surface mines in western Canada seeking information on haul road design, construction, and maintenance. There has been a marked increase in the size of the trucks used over the last decade with some mines now using trucks with a payload capacity of 360mt. Consequentially, geometrical elements of haul roads, such as width, have been enlarged to accommodate larger trucks. Most haul roads are constructed on the basis of past experience without use of formal design procedures. With the introduction of larger haul trucks, problems related to rolling resistance, deterioration, and maintenance of the haul roads have become more important. This has lead to adoption of more rigorous design methods for roads at some mines, most notably for the oil sand mines operated by Syncrude Canada Ltd. A summary of the evolution of haul road designs implemented at Syncrude Canada Ltd. is presented.

"This paper compares several distinct types of mineral deposits associated with different families of granitoid rocks in the New Brunswick Appalachians. Porphyry copper deposit s are associated with late-stage differentiates of Lower to Middle Devonian I-type igneous complexes. Contact metasomatic deposits were formed where these plutons intrude carbonate rocks and they gave rise to vein deposits in fracture zones near wrench faults. The I-type granitoids were emplaced mainly in areas of thin continental crust and locally along prominent faults in areas of thick continental crust.In contrast, tin-tungsten-molybdenum-bearing greisen deposits and skarns, and antimony-bearing quartz veins are associated with predominantly S-stype granitoid complexes ranging in age from Middle Devonian to early Carboniferous. The mineral deposits occur within or along the contacts of very fractionated (specialized) late phases of these intrusive complexes, which are characterized by high K2O/Na2O, Rb/Sr and Rb/Ba, and low Fe, Mg, Zr and Ti contents. These specialized granitoids are in a large wrench fault zone that cuts across thick continental crust in southwestern and central New Brunswick.IntroductionA great variety of igneous intrusions and subvolcanic stocks were emplaced in the New Brunswick Appalachians during the latter stages of and immediately after the Acadian Orogeny (late Lower to Middle Devonian) and during the subsequent Hercynian Orogeny (Carboniferous). The presence or absence and characteristics of mineral deposits associated with these intrusions reflect the level of intrusion, the composition of the associated igneous rocks and the composition of the invaded sequences.Nickel-copper sulphide deposits occur in mafic intrusions in the St. Stephen area of the southwestern Magaguadavic - St. Croix Zone and in the Goodwin Lake area of the northeastern Mirarnichi Zone. Contact metasomatic and vein-type copper-rich base metal sulphide deposits and porphyry copper deposits with or without molybdenum are related mainly to high-level granitoid stocks of intermediate composition in the Matapedia-Tobique and northwest Miramichi zones. Tintungsten - molybdenum deposits with or without base metal sulphide minerals and antimony-uranium deposits are mainly associated with Upper Devonian and Lower Carboniferous biotite-muscovite granites and related 'subvolcanic intrusions that occur in an arc-shaped belt extending from the southwestern Magagaudavic - St. Croix Zone into the central Mirarnichi Zone."

Short term electrodeposition experiments (up to 80 min.) at two current densities 220 and 275 A/m2 with varying concentrations of thiourea and glue were performed to determine the optimum levels of glue, thiourea and current density for industrial copper electrorefining. White Light Interference Microscopy was used to acquire digital images of the morphology of the electrodeposited copper. Scaling analysis was employed to pa-rameterize the morphological information encoded in the images. The limiting rough¬ness, *, the critical scaling length, Lc, and the aspect ratio, 4*/ Lc, were determined as a function of the deposition time and the amount of organic additives. These parameters were used to calculate the dynamic exponent, B, the roughness exponent, 1/z, and the as¬pect ratio exponent, y, plotted as a function of glue and thiourea concentrations. These 3D plots allowed us to find conditions corresponding to the minimum of B and y, at which the deposited copper is characterized by a small roughness and a dense structure.

"IntroductionCurrent coal combustion activities at the Canadian Combustion Research Laboratory (CCRL) reflect the increasingly important contribution that coal is expected to make in meeting our future energy requirements and in reducing our dependence on foreign oil. Widespread use of coal will, however, be heavily dependent on the ability of conventional and emerging combustion systems to cope with the disruptive conflicts caused by variations in fuel quality, on requirements for better equipment availability .and on the implementation of progressively more stringent environmental constraints.To minimize these conflicts, Energy, Mines and Resources Canada has embarked on a systematic sequence of research, development and demonstration- scale (R, D and D) initiatives to stimulate the utilization and competitiveness of thermal coal in both domestic and export markets through a number of complementary in-house projects and external contracts, considered to have short- to intermediate-term benefits to industry and society.Many of the in-house projects are funded in part by industry, whereas the external contracts are either fully funded (100070 government funding) or jointly funded (50% government - 50% project proposer).External contracts and shared-cost projects are an important adjunct to the CCRL in-house effort on coal combustion, because research data can be more effectively transferred to industry and because the commercialization of novel combustion systems can be accelerated significantly."

"Due to the European Directive 2000/53/EC on end-of-life-vehicles, from 2015 on more than 95% of car materials have to be recycled. In order to recycle the materials back into the economic cycle, it is necessary to produce products with high quality and purity.Plastic components in cars, which are coated with metals by vapour deposition or electroplating, have a wide circulation (e.g., as cladding panel or trim strip for interiors and exteriors). In the end-of-lifevehicle recycling process, these plastic-metal composites are not considered in usual technologies (car shredder) and are not separated from Automotive Shredder Residue. These parts can be separated by optical or HF-detection sorting and then introduced to a specific treatment.Experiments with a specially developed bioleaching configuration showed that the thin coatings, which consist mainly of copper, nickel and chromium, can be removed efficiently from the polymer base materials by a bioleaching solution with Acidothiobacillus ferrooxidans as a leaching agent. The solution used was produced in special fermenters with a 9K-nutrient salt media. During the bioleaching process at 35°C maximum temperature, most of the copper is dissolved and the other metals accumulate as metal sludge. The bacterial cultures based on A. ferrooxidans are robust and resilient.After a 48-hour bioleaching period while the composites were stirred regularly with ventilation, the plastic particles were completely free from metallic coatings. The metal components are separated for further use: undissolved components (mainly Ni and Cr) are separated by decantation of the solution; dissolved copper recovey is carried out by cementation of copper. The cementated solid contains ~98% Cu, along with small amounts of other metals.With the bioleaching process, good separation and re-utilization of the metallic coatings is possible. The cleaned plastic parts were prepared by compounding for new applications with injectionmoulding."

A new process for the recovery of copper and associated base metals from a polymetallic massive sulphide ore is described. The massive sulphide contains copper and especially nickel sulphide in a mineralogical form which negates both good recovery and high grades in concentrates using conventional flotation methods. Flotation concentrate processing and smelting from this ore is therefore probably not an economically viable option. Utilising the properties of high concentration chloride brines, a flow sheet has been developed and tested whereby the recovery of all of the metals and some of the power requirements for the plant itself can be derived from the ore. The new process overcomes the less-amenable-to-flotation ore characteristics, and provides the opportunity of economic processing in remote locations where the dependency on fossil fuels is both a logistical and an economic concern. The Ferguson Lake deposit of Starfield Resources in Nunavut, Canada, is the subject of this paper, which focuses on the leaching and copper recovery unit operations of the proposed flow sheet.

Paste backfill as a means of supporting underground mining is gaining popularity. Despite this trend, engineering and design of mine paste backfill systems are still largely based on empirical methods rather than established scientific principles. Because of a lack of sound understanding of mineral paste flow, some degree of trial and error is often involved during commissioning and operating of new paste fill systems. New operations often have to be built with flexibilities and contingencies, escalating the overall project costs. This paper reviews the applicability of some scientific and engineering principles to mineral paste flows. Recent experimental data are used to illustrate important points. The phenomenon of mineral paste flow is examined under the context of improving the efficiency and reliability of underground delivery. Gaps in our understanding of mineral paste rheology are pointed out and from those some future research directions naturally emerge. Status and problems of the current engineering and design practice are also briefly discussed.

Deformation in a material at any temperature is known to consist of two major components - a reversible (elastic) part and an irreversible part (often called plastic). What is not universally known is the fact that at high temperatures greater than about 0.4Tm, where Tm, is the melting point in Kelvin, the reversible part includes not only elastic but also a delayed elastic (recoverable but time dependent) component. A very simple computational model is presented here for a constant-strain stress relaxation test (SRT) on the basis of a three-component constant-stress rheological equation derived from strain relaxation and recovery test (SRRT) data. It is shown that the rapid stress reduction during the early periods of relaxation when the stresses are high is governed primarily by delayed elasticity irrespective of the imposed strain level. This is in contradiction to the popular concept prevailing today. The asymptotic approach to a quasi-stable stress rate at longer times and lower stresses is, however, controlled by viscous flow (power-law creep). The validity of the theory is examined by comparing the predictions with experimental results obtained for a titanium-base alloy Ti-6246 at 0.45Tm.

Dissociative adsorption of hydrogen (deuterium) on thin gold films grown on Ir{111} surface has been studied with temperature-programmed desorption using a quadrupole mass spectrometer and nuclear reaction analysis. Thin Au{111} films are epitaxially grown on Ir{111}. Surprisingly, H2 (D2) can dissociatively adsorb on these Au{111} films, although it is well known that Au surfaces are noble enough not to dissociate hydrogen molecules [B. Hammer and J.K. Nørskov, Nature 376, (1995) 238]. We attribute this to the sensitivity of hydrogen to changes in the local surface properties, e.g., electron localization (the narrowing of the s-band, the s-band center model), which could explain the upto now unexpected high for the reactivity of a thin Au{111} surface. Moreover, we found that H (D) atoms can be confined into a Au thin film and/or the interface between an Ir surface and the thin Au film. We demonstrate how anomalously reactive thin Au films grown on an Ir surface are, and also compare the Au films with Ag films grown on Ir to test the validity/generality of our proposed s-band center model.

Today, we employ 22,000 people across 19 countries and have 14 mines including open pits, shafts, beach-sands and seabed. 1.2. Last year our sales were US$5.7 billion and our total production amounted to 47 million carats which means a 40% global market share. For the Kyoto buffs in the audience, the company consumes 66 million cubic metres of water per annum, 210 million litres of hydrocarbon fuel and 1,600 GWh of electricity. There are three big open pits that enjoy economies of scale that make them the lowest cost producers. Open pit mine plans define the complex strategy of displacement of ore and waste over the mine life. The objective of the mine plan is to maximize the future cash flows within the technical and physical constraints. Various mixed integer linear programming (MILP) formulations have been used for production scheduling of open pit mines. In the MILP formulation the slope constraints guarantee that all the overlying blocks are mined prior to mining a given block. Traditionally, the slope constraints have been modeled with cone templates representing the required wall slopes of the open pit mine. The overall pit slopes constructed by these templates are a function of the width and height of the geological block model. Therefore, the overall slopes are fixed in one bearing. This paper presents a general MILP model for open pit mine scheduling with variable slopes constraints. The methodology utilizes a directed graph to capture the precedence of extraction of blocks and pit slopes in different bearings. Depth-first-search algorithm was used to traverse the graph for constructing the slope constraints in the MILP problem. TOMLAB/CPLEX was used as the implementation platform to efficiently integrate the mathematical solver package CPLEX with MATLAB. A case study on intermediate scheduling of an iron ore mine over twelve periods was carried out to validate the models.

Consumption of refined copper in Asia, especially in China and India, has soared, and the copper price is at its historic height. New smelters and refineries have been built in the region with state-of-the-art technology to meet the unprecedented demands. Supply of copper concentrate, on the other hand, has fallen short of the growing demand for concentrate by the smelters and refineries with expanded production capacities. The shortage of copper concentrate is attributable to the delay in the mining development, caused by the prolonged price slump of before 2005. The mismatch between supply of concentrate and smelting and refining capacities may cause disorderly movement of copper price, and hamper the sound development of the industry. The recent high copper price may prompt substitution with alternate materials. With electrical and thermal conductivity and workability, copper is one of the most customer-friendly materials. It is regrettable for both customers and suppliers if the high copper price would become an impediment to promoting copper use. Some outdated and environmentally unfriendly facilities still operate. In view of recent lower-grade copper concentrate with higher sulfur content, these facilities must reform their equipment to environmental-responsive one. The current level of per capita consumption of refined copper in Asia shows that the demand of copper will further grow. It is necessary to realize stable supply of refined copper and stable copper price, to help developing countries including China and India to economically take off. Hence, it is essential that the development of the copper industry be accompanied by environmentally friendly facilities, and harmoniously increased capacities between mining and smelting and refining.

These problems are certainly not lightened by that familiar monster lurking in the shadows-taxation! Recent taxation trends in Canada, and the existing tax regimes for the mining industry, continue to be a major bugaboo.This examination by ""Tax Notes"" of the impact of current taxation trends on the mining industry is based on a speech delivered recently by Robert D. Brown, senior tax partner of Price Waterhouse, Canada, to the annual meeting of the American Institute of Mining, Metallurgical and Petroleum Engineers in Dallas.IntroductionThe purpose of this paper is to tell a story-and it is a story with a moral. The first thing to recognize is that, with depressed metal prices and weakening western economies, high taxes, in and of themselves, are not really the cause of the Canadian mining industry's present doldrums. However, the character and level of mining taxes in Canada has had a profound influence on the development of the industry over the past decade, and the expectations of what the future holds for mining men in Canada will equally play an important role in the future development of the Canadian industry. Our tax system has, in the past, served as a negative and destabilizing influence in the mining industry: it has contributed to a major short-fall in investment commitments and hence in the contribution which the mining industry can make to the Canadian economy, and the adverse effect on the industry of previous high marginal tax rates was made far worse by the confusing, contradictory and perverse nature of the tax system itself."

E-waste has various kinds of electronic components with valuable and/or hazardous materials. Recycling of them is an important subject from the viewpoint of both the recovery of valuable materials and waste treatment. In common with all mineral processing, the comminution of e-waste is a key process because the liberation states after comminution determine the overall efficiency of metal recovery. Since some of useful critical metals are concentrated in a specific component, a special and selective grinding is expected to be effective. However, the knowledge about the mechanism and the effectiveness of the selective grinding is still limited and unclear.To better comprehend the mechanism, in this study, the investigation of comminution process using the particle-based simulation was conducted. Especially, this study focused on the comminution performance of printed circuit boards (PCBs), which are major components of e-waste. The behavior of PCBs and airflow in a drum typed agitation mill having flexible chains was simulated by the discrete element method (DEM) coupled with computational fluid dynamics (CFD). To model the shape of PCBs, the particle based rigid body model was introduced into the DEM. Since this model could not directly simulate the breakage phenomena, collision energy was calculated to qualitatively evaluate the comminution performance. In addition, the simulation results were compared with the experimental comminution tests using simulant PCBs where some capacitors were solder-mounted. These results indicated that comminution performance was affected by the rotation speed of the agitator. It was also demonstrated that the comminution performance was qualitatively evaluated using the particle-based simulation and this particle-based simulation made it possible to investigate the mechanism of e-waste comminution."
