"This paper describes some recent research done at CANMET in the areas of ion exchange and A VR (Acidification- Volatilization Reneutralization), as applied to the recovery of gold and cyanide, respectively. It also discusses the ways in which these two technologies may be combined in order to minimize the environmental impact of gold milling operations and optimize reagent usage. IntroductionGold milling operations can essentially be divided into those that carry out a liquid/solid separation after leaching and those that recover gold directly from a leach pulp. The former produce a barren solution which may contain considerable amounts of cyanide, either free or cornplexed with metals. The latter produce a similar solution but this is now part of a slurry rather than a clear stream. Due to its toxicity, any excess cyanide must be destroyed before the effluent is discharged into the environment. Ideally, this should be (and sometimes is) accomplished by natural degradation. However, in many cases natural degradation alone cannot remove the last traces of rnetallocyanide compounds from the effluent and , as a result, most Canadian gold producers utilize a supplementary chemical oxidation system. This not only increases the operating costs, but concerns have also arisen in recent years about the formation of ammonia as a result of the chemical oxidation of cyanide (via CN--CNO--HCNO-NH3) ·"

"Laboratory testing, by Lakefield Research determined that, in spite of the relatively high pyrite content of the Golden Rose (GR) orebody, it would respond well to gravity concentration followed by either direct cyanidation or cyanidation of a flotation concentrate.Economics favoured the former choice which became the adopted process flowsheet.During the latter stage of the feasibility study, the Dekalb 500 tpd copper flotation mill became available in the Highland Valley of British Columbia. This plant was purchased by Emerald Lake Resources, and was moved to the Golden Rose minesite.The crushing and grinding circuit were retained and the original flotation circuit was replaced with a 400 mtd gravity plus cyanidation circuit. The plant commissioning commenced in August 1987, and by early September was processing 300 tpd.HistoryThe Golden Rose Mine was operated by Cominco during the period 1935 to 1941 processing 146000 tons grading DAD oz/t Au at a rate of 110 tpd .The process flowsheet consisted of gravity plus amalgamation followed by cyanidation.Metallurgical TestingThe underground mining areas were below the level of Emerald Lake, and had flooded on abandonment in 1942.Samples for metallurgical testing were collected from exposed faces underground once the mine had been dewateredin 1984.In spite of the anticipated high pyrite content of the ore samples, it was apparent from the success of the previous operation that the pyrite did not interfere with the gold recovery.Laboratory testing, at Lakefield, determined that, from a technical perspective, two metallurgical options existed, as shown in Tables I and 2.Note that the very high pyrite content of the ore precluded the possible direct marketing of concentrate. The process flowsheet, therefore, had to contain a cyanidation circuit for the operation to succeed financially.Although the anticipated metallurgy was excellent with either option, the 2.1 % increase in gold recovery with the gravity plus cyanidation option made this the clear choice."

"High-risk underwater mining operations necessitate characterizing spatial heterogeneity and resource uncertainty. Local average subdivision is a method of simulating spatial deposit variability inside a cell through a sequence of discretization stages, during which a cell is further subdivided into four or eight cells. New developments are presented to validate simulated deposit models and deal with point measurements of geotechnical and ore-grade properties. This paper illustrates the relevance of translating spatial deposit variability into financial or operational performance indicators during underwater resource exploitation. Two synthetic case studies highlight the challenges of underwater mining in relation to production plans and equipment selection.RÉSUMÉ Les opérations d’extraction minière subaquatique à risque élevé exigent une caractérisation de l’hétérogénéité spatiale et de l’incertitude de la ressource. La moyenne locale de subdivision est une méthode de simuler la variabilité spatiale du gisement dans une cellule par une séquence d’étapes de discrétisation durant lesquelles une cellule est subdivisée en quatre ou huit cellules. De nouveaux développements sont présentés afin de valider les modèles de simulation des gisements et de traiter des mesures ponctuelles des propriétés géotechniques et de teneur du minerai. "Abstract- The Legris Lake Complex is a northeast-trending, 7.3 km long by 3.5 km wide, maficultramafic intrusive complex located in the western Wabigoon Subprovince of the Archean Superior Province. It is one of a series of mafic-ultramafic igneous complexes, the most notable of which is the Lac des Iles Complex, host to Canada’s only producing Pd mine with reserves of 93.5 Mt grading 1.53 g/t Pd as of December 2001 (North American Palladium Ltd., Annual Report 2001). Cu-Ni- PGE mineralization was first discovered in the Legris Lake Complex by a local prospector late in 1999. Shortly thereafter, the property was jointly optioned by Avalon Ventures Ltd. and Starcore Resources Ltd., who continue to discover significant Cu-Ni-PGE mineralization.One of the most notable features of the Legris Lake Complex is the occurrence of extensive brecciation caused by multiple injections of volatile-rich magma. The Cu-Ni-PGE mineralization is hosted by leucogabbro within a 2 km long by 600 m wide, highly brecciated area in the northwestern area of the Complex. The mineralized rocks contain disseminated to blebby sulfides (1 to 5 vol.%), comprising chalcopyrite + pyrite ± pyrrhotite + millerite ± pentlandite, typically surrounded by epidote. The majority of the Cu-Ni-PGE mineralization displays low ratios of Pt/Pd (~0.20) and high ratios of Cu/Ni (~2.9), which are similar to those of the Lac des Iles and the River Valley mafic-ultramafic complexes. The lithologies in Legris Lake Complex bear similarities to the heterolithic gabbro of the Twilight and Roby Zone deposits at the nearby Lac des Iles mine. However, the mineralization at Legris Lake, which is restricted to leucogabbro overlying unmineralized clinopyroxenite, is similar to that of stratiform deposits such as the Stillwater and Munni Munni complexes. The mineralization at Legris Lake is best explained by the late-stage, immiscible separation of a sulfide melt from volatile-rich parental magmas and the subsequent minor redistribution of metals by deuteric fluids."

"Gibraltar Mines Ltd. has been operating its open pit copper mine for fifteen years. In that time, over 140 million tons of waste and low-grade material has been placed on the mine waste dumps. Laboratory and in situ testing indicated that enough leachable copper was recoverable from the dumps to justify a leaching operation which would include the construction of a solvent extraction-electro winning plant. The plant, which was commissioned in October 1986, was designed to process 3000 USGPM of dilute copper solution to produce 5000 tons per year of high-quality cathode copper.This paper deals with the start-up and initial year of operation of this plant. The three areas: leaching, solvent extraction, and electrowinning are presented with emphasis on the innovations which were made to help overcome the problems unique to the Gibraltar operation.The Leaching CircuitThe mine waste dumps are leached to produce a pregnant copper solution as feed to the SX-EW plant. To achieve this the dumps are sprinkled with a mildly acidic solution which percolates through the dumps. In travelling through the dumps the solution contacts the surfaces of the liberated copper minerals and dissolves the soluble copper into the form of copper sulphate. The leaching reaction is achieved by a combination of bacterial action to oxidize the sulphides and solubilization of the copper into the acid solution.For the bacterial action to occur the dumps must be near the ideal pH of 1.9 to 2.1 and the necessary elements of the reaction must be present. Because a bacterial reaction is involved there is a lag time between the time when the conditions for bacterial growth are achieved and when the bacteria are in their active growth phase. Laboratory leaching tests with Gibraltar ore indicated that bacterial action takes two to three months to reach its maximum rate (Fig. I).The expected lag time for the planned rate of bacterial leaching prompted Gibraltar to start irrigating the dumps in late June 1986 for a plant start in early fall. The lag time proved to be longer than expected and the dumps took until November to start producing copper at the expected rate (Fig. 2)."

A 300 m shaft provides access to the mine. In addition , exploitation sublevels are developed every 20 m and are linked by a service ramp. The overburden located on top of the deposit is 40 m thick and is composed of a very dense till.A detailed work plan was initiated to permit mining under the overburden. To do so, it was imperative that efficient methods be developed. At a time when an accident at the Belmoral Mine shook the mining world , it was a task to convince provincial authorities that it was safe.While B zone was being mined , development began in the A-2 zone deposit which has recently been put into production (Figs. 1 and 2).The intention of this paper is to provide an outline of the mining method s and their particular aspects. To do so, some of the mine services are described and a brief outline of the under ground department is provided."

"The On-Stream Analyzer has proven, and is still proving to be, an extremely valuable tool for the control of flotation circuits. This paper examines the possibility of going further in the utilization of the analyzer results by using a real-time material balance program to calculate the mass flow rates within the streams of a circuit for process control, analysis and optimization as well as for the detection of sensor malfunction. The material balance algorithm improves measurements and give good estimates of unmeasured variables during normal operating conditions. The potential and limitations of the method are illustrated using results of an application to the Line 3 flotation circuit of Brunswick Mining and Smelting, New Brunswick.IntroductionThe On-Stream Analyzer (OSA) has gained, over the last two decades, the status of key instrument for the control of flotation plants. The OSA is currently used in almost every sulphide flotation plant and its application in oxide mineral flotation plants isincreasing. Commercial OSAs include a sampling system that collectssamples from various streams of a circuit and exposes thesamples to an X-ray beam. The sample then generates X-ray pulsesthat are converted into assays using multilinear regression programs(Leroux and Franklin, 1994). The estimated assays arepassed to the flotation operators via operator consoles, or to controlloops of various degrees of complexity (McKee, 1991), whichmanipulate reagent addition, aeration rate or froth thickness toensure an adequate operation of the plant. "This paper discusses various aspects affected by the use of large-diameter boreholes in underground mines. Topics covered consist of noxious fumes, vibrations, post-blast effects, various types of explosives, the cordine system in production blasts, the slider primer system and wall-control methods. In general, the paper is an overview of this important fact of underground mining.IntroductionWith economical factors leading the way, many reasons motivated drilling equipment companies to develop equipment that can drill holes up to eight inches in diameter and even larger for underground applications. One of these other reasons is the fact that many orebodies were considered marginal, given the high costs of conventional mining methods utilizing small diameter boreholes. With these criteria in mind, accelerated programs were put in motion to develop equipment that would reduce both-development and production costs in underground mines. Change s in any basic program often affect other areas down the line. This is particularly true with the ad vent of large-diameter boreholes underground.C-I-L Inc. is certainly no stranger to this phenomena. Whether production headings increase in size and tonnage or whether production increases due to lower costs, one fact remains unchanged and that is the fact that all development and production holes are loaded and blasted whether they be of small or large diameter. Due to this fact, C-I-L Inc., as a leading explosives manufacturer, initiated a program to examine blasting methods in use in surface work with the intent of revising these method s for underground applications. Research facilities were also oriented toward developing appropriate products. This was a task that was accepted with anticipation, with the result that many new blasting systems and methods were brought forward, thanks to the collective efforts of both the consumers and manufacturers."

"A systematic survey of the appropriate literature in terms of phase equilibria and possible reactions involving deposits in Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) incinerators are analyzed particularly with respect to the theoretical first melting points of typical ashes and the possible presence of a liquid phase at the temperature of ash-metal interface. Conclusions are drawn on the basis of the possible presence or absence of various metal chlorides and sulphates in such situations, and their effects on the problems of fouling and metal corrosion. From preliminary results, it would appear that ZnCl2 is unlikely to be present in any molten phase which causes corrosion because it evaporates rapidly from such liquids. It would also appear that PbCl2 and, by inference, ZnCl2 will sulphate at relatively low temperatures if the flue gas contains SO2 and O2.IntroductionMunicipal Solid Waste (MSW) incinerators produce fly ash which deposits on heat transfer surfaces throughout the furnace, leading to corrosion and loss of energy recovery efficiency. Despite a massive amount of research carried out on the subject of corrosion in MSW incinerators, the problem of corrosion of heat transfer metal is still with us, and no definite over-all cause and effect relationship has yet been identified. In order to make a contribution to the eventual solution of this problem, the authors have examined the problem from the beginning, using their knowledge of fouling and corrosion problems in black liquor recovery boilers as a starting point.The incineration of MSW has been used for many years to reduce the volume of material sent to landfill (ash volume compared to raw waste volume), and, in most cases, to recover energy at the same time by raising steam The steam may be ""low- or high pressure/ temperature"" depending on its end use. The higher the steam pressure and temperature, the greater seem to be the problems with corrosion of heat exchanger metal, presumably because the metal must withstand higher surface temperatures.The chemical and physical composition of MSW is extremely variable, not only on a regional basis, seasonal basis, and day-today basis, but also on a minute-by-minute basis, due to the inhomogeneity of MSW. This makes it extremely difficult to define cause and effect relationships, because both cause and effect are transient in nature."

"During the summer of1989, Les Mines Selbaie, with the cooperation of Université Laval initiated a research project to evaluate the column flotation technology for its concentrator near Joutel, Quebec. The experimental work involved both a 5 cm by 11 m laboratory column and a 45 cm by 10 m home-made pilot unit Amenability tests were conducted using both units on various streams of the plant. Results showed that columns are not suitable for the copper cleaning circuit because the loss of precious metals, associated with the rejected pyrite, overcome the improved copper metallurgy. On the other hand, column testing at the zinc circuit showed improved zinc selectivity.Scale-up testing was', therefore, conducted on the first zinc cleaner concentrate using the laboratory-size column. The influence of variables such as porous parger grain size, wash water flow rate, airflow rate and froth depth values on column performance was' first assessed. Scale-up parameters were then determined using the optimal operating conditions from the previous tests. Simulation facilitated the determination of the most convenient plant-scale column arrangement.A number of conclusions concerning the experimental determination of scale-up parameters are also presented."

Although the measurement of blast vibration close to the blasthole is critical to the understanding of rock fragmentation mechanisms and blast damage in the rock masses, limited experience for such monitoring exists. Because much higher vibration amplitude and frequency ranges are expected in rock masses close to an explosive charge as compared to far field vibrations, different problems from those for the far field monitoring must be considered for near field blast vibration monitoring. Currently, guidelines for design of the near field blast monitoring systems do not exist. This paper describes the development of an integrated technique for vibration monitoring close to a blast hole, including selection and installation of transducers, design of a monitoring system and signal recording. A densified cement was designed for grouting accelerometers in order to match p-wave impedance between the rock and grout. The monitoring technique described has proven suitable for blast vibration monitoring within 2 m to 15 m of a blast hole having loading conditions similar to production blasts.

"Given the properties, locations and quantities of material to be hauled and the dump locations and capacities, the designer wishes to select the type and number of trucks and loading equipment required. Accordingly, software is being developed to assist in creation of the equipment, material and road network data bases, in selection of equipment, materials and road networks from these data bases, and in evaluation of the expected productivities both in a rapid, non-interactive, approximate fashion and a more detailed interactive fashion which permits the user to act as superintendent, if he so chooses. The basic technology has been developed and applied to an open-pit copper mine and is being refined and generalized for oil sands and coal mining applications.BackgroundA set of mathematical and interactive computer models are under development to aid in the selection of equipment and operating policies for an open-pit oil sands mine being planned by Canstar Oil Sands Ltd. This paper describes the computer models being developed of truck haulage systems. Although the interactive truck haulage model is based primarily on a model developed by the National Research Council in collaboration with Glenayre Electronics Ltd. of North Vancouver and Lornex Mines Limited(2).(3l, substantial changes and improvements are being incorporated to greatly increase its generality re equipment types, road network characteristics, dispatching and supervisory policies, etc. Although this paper is principally devoted to the truck haulage model, discussion is included concerning its interactions with other models."

"The mechanical aspects of cable bolt failure are considered from the point of view of properties of grout and cable, as well as of the rock in which it is anchored. The results from recent investigations made in-situ as well as in the lab are combined and presented with reference to other work done in the area. An attempt is made to stimulate the thinking along these lines so as to initiate further research which may enhance the design of cable bolting as it applied to mining operations.IntroductionIn the past twelve year s systematic cable bolting has found application in many areas. In civil engineering rock anchors have been used to provide tension at the heel of a dam permitting the reduction of its cross section. They have been used in retaining walls to reduce construction time and costs by eliminating the need for struts and braces which complicate pouring the foundation walls. It is also possible to use rock anchors in providing reactions where tall buildings are subjected to uplift on one side due to wind forces. Cantilever bridges may be constructed by implementing rock anchors to provide anchorage requirements. Anchorage piles or dolphins or mooring ships have also been built using these. In the mining area rock anchors, commonly known as cable bolts because they are made of hoist cable may be implemented in the reinforcement of hanging walls or to retain rock slopes.In order to sustain de-pressurized ground where rock separation developed along the pressure arches, cable bolts were utilized at the Tsumeb Mine in South-West Africa and also at the Strathcona Mine in Sudbury, Ontario, In both places old degreased hoist ropes were installed in downholes from crosscuts above a given stope and then grouted without tensioning. Jeremic and Cassidy described the use of cable bolts to increase hanging wall stability and postpone fracturing, in addition to producing pre-support for improvement of stope back stability."

"A summary is presented of the report completed by the Coal Mining Research Centre in 1980. This report was of a cross-pit conveyor system applied as an auxiliary mining complement to the major stripping unit, a dragline. The purpose of the CMRC report was to evaluate selective mining and replacement of the upper horizons of the strata as an aid in reclamation. These strata were the topsoil, subsoil and glacial till.Past utilization of cross-pit conveyor systems and related engineering studies were assessed. The parameters of the study were based on the mining and geological conditions of the Alberta prairie coal mines. The principal excavator for stripping was a dragline. Excavation of the upper horizons was done by a bucket-wheel excavator discharging onto the crosspit conveyor. Alternative equipment applications were economically compared. Four cases or geological sections were evaluated in detail. The economics of the alternative mining systems for each of the cases were determined. In all instances, the most economical solution was a tandem system utilizing a dragline with a bucket-wheel excavator/ cross-pit conveyor system."

"In recent years the trend in underground metal mining has been toward ever increasing blasts (often in excess of 100 000 tonnes per blast). The Canadian mining industry has been in the forefront of these developments (VRM, LBHand cable bolting to stabilize the surrounding rock /avoid dilution).In order to move these large tonnages, efficient loading systems have to be developed. This paper shows the technical and economic implications of various loading scenarios based on a predefined (however typical) stoping layout by:1 . discontinuous loading using scoop trams;2. discontinuous loading using scoop trams in combination with low profile dump trucks;3. continuous loading (based on loading performance/operating costs of the AL-60) in combination with low profile dumptrucks.The cost advantages of production concentration (loading large tonnages from one drawpoint}, made possible by continuous loading as opposed to sea tiered mining (small tonnages), using discontinuous loading in tunnelling will be presented, based on actual results obtained in a decline development project using the A L-60 continuous loader. At as pacing oj150m between turning bays, it was found that continuous loading was out performing discontinuous loading in approximately80% of the overall decline development.Fuel consumption and total cycle times are compared, and a cost assessment is presented.INTRODUCTIONThe subject of this paper deals with the introduction of continuous loading in underground metal mining and single heading tunnelingContinous mining has been widely introduced both in underground and surface coal mining. Mechanized longwall mining, utilizing moveable shield supports in combination with double drum- shearers, has resulted in a tremendous increase of coal production per working face.This has led to very concentrated mining operations. In a typical German coal mine two mechanized longwalls nowadays would produce the same amount of coal as 12 to 15 longwalls in the 1950s. One longwall in a South African coal mine has recently set a world record with 120 000 tonnes of coal in a single month.In underground metal mines-often due to the irregular nature of the ore body and the mining methods used-mining is far less concent rated. Ore is often produced from a large number of stopes and production sections. Sometimes, a substantial amount of ore may be obtained from development in the orebody (40070 at a German base metal mine)."

These rules are often fairly complex and not easily understood. This article attempts to explain in plain and understandable language the mechanics and benefits of one of the more frequently encountered provisions, the ""Section 85 election"".IntroductionThe Canadian resource industries are probably singled out for more special attention under this country's tax legislation than any other industry. This special treatment is, of course, not always welcomed by the industry, such as where unnecessarily restrictive taxation is perceived to exist or where agonizingly complex tax legislation must be dealt with. On the other hand, certain provisions in the tax legislation treat the industry in a relatively favourable manner, including a number of rules which, in recognition of the high risk and capital requirements of the resource sector, serve to facilitate the structuring of resource ventures."

"Considering the traumatic events of Canadian mining taxation of the 1970s, one wonders at the sanity of anybody who tries to predict what the 1980s might hold for the tax structure of the mining industry. Yet, the author agreed to tackle this task when called upon to do so at the annual meeting of the Quebec Metal Mining Association in June. The text of this ""daring"" speech follows.IntroductionI have been asked to play the part of the oracle at Delphi, and to predict what the 1980s might hold for the Canadian mining industry in terms of taxation. To appreciate the challenge of this difficult assignment, try to imagine someone in my position back in 1972 attempting to forecast the balance of the 1970s. I daresay that ten years ago nobody could possibly have conceived of the devastating and casualty-ridden rollercoaster ride that mining taxation actually took in the 70s. Nevertheless, I shall examine the entrails and try to shed some light on what might happen during the balance of this decade as far as mineral taxation is concerned.If one were to retreat deep into history, one would find that taxation generally served one purpose-namely, to raise revenues for the government. More recently, an important second function has emerged: taxation is increasingly being used as a fiscal tool-a tool intended to mould and shape future events in order to accomplish certain economic, social and political objectives. It is these two main forces-the need (or desire) for revenues and the perceived convenience of using taxation as a fiscal tool-which will continue to shape the tax structure of the future.In our assessment of where taxation of the mining industry may be headed, we should be able to learn something by looking at where we have been."
