"This literature survey discusses the recovery of gold from thiourea solutions. An overview of techniques used and general comments on the basic cyanidation methods are presented. The chemistry and mechanisms of cementation, activated carbon, resins, electrowinning, solvent extraction and pressure reduction are examined. Conclusions and recommendations give orientation for future research and development activities in this field.RésuméCette revue littéraire traite de la récupération de I ‘or des solutions de thiourée. L?utilisation du remblai en pâte dans les exploitations en vrac est de plus en plus importante. Puisque la technologie existe pour fabriquer du remblai en pâte sans construire une usine coûteuse, il est maintenant possible d?élargir le domaine d?utilisation du remblai en pâte pour y inclure des gisements filoniens où le besoin annuel de remblai est moindre. Dans certains cas, l?utilisation du remblai en pâte pourrait permettre de réaliser d?importantes économies telles que la réduction de la dilution, la stabilité des ouvertures, la récupération d?une plus grande partie du minerai par la réduction de la taille des piliers et l?entreposage de moins de résidus à la surface. L?ampleur des économies est parfois difficile à chiffrer mais il est tout de même important d?en tenir compte lors de la décision d?utiliser du remblai en pâte puisque ce sont souvent ces économies qui seront déterminantes. Différentes méthodes d?extraction avec remblai en pâte appliquées aux mines filoniennes seront présentées. Gravity separation is a technique that depends on the difference in density of minerals for their separation. Although this method is one of the oldest separation techniques, it is still preferred in the industry because of its low capital and operating cost while it is environmental-friendly. In this paper, we present a new numerical methodology that can be used to investigate dynamics of dense slurry flows in gravity separation systems. A simple channel with a set of riffles is selected as a test platform in order to observe the effect of the riffle shape on segregation profile of particles with different densities. It is believed that the riffle shape would affect the slurry flow and possibly cause one class of particles to segregate within the riffle zone. The turbulence, as a disturbance effect within the riffle zone, causes heavy particles to displace the light, that is, the heavy particles will be trapped in riffles, while the lighter particles are carried by water to the end of the channel, which is an example to uninterrupted suspension. MP-PIC model in OpenFOAM is used to study the effect of riffle shape and slurry percentage of solids in this simple gravity separator on particle segregation profile of four discrete mineral density classes, which are Quartz/Clay (SG 2.6), Pyrite (SG 4.2), Chalcopyrite (SG 5.1), and Gold (SG 19.32). Gold particles are found to be readily captured and retained in the riffles because of their high density, while particles with the intermediate densities are more influenced by the flow. The developed model framework has been proven robust and capable of providing physical results even for the flows with a very high percentage of solids, characteristic for mineral processing operations. INTRODUCTION Gravity-based ore concentration techniques make use of differences in density of minerals within an ore to enable separation of valuables from the gangue. As some of the oldest techniques used for ore beneficiation, they are known to offer a range of benefits such as low specific energy consumption and low capital and operating costs (Burt, 1999; Falconer, 2003; Holland-Batt, 1998), however, they suffer from low selectivity, poor separation efficiency, and low capacity. Gravity separation techniques are common practices in the mining industry and are employed widely for the precious mineral concentration, iron ore recovery and coal preparation (Kroll-Rabotin, Bourgeois, & Climent, 2013; Laplante & Spiller, 2002; Williams, 1997). For example, gravity separation systems are highly applicable for precious metal enrichment operations by being included in primary grinding circuits, shaking table tailing separation, pre-concentration of leach feed and flotation concentrate enrichment for both flash and conventional flotation purposes (Burt, 1999; Falconer, 2003; Holland-Batt, 1998; Laplante & Spiller, 2002; McAlister, 1992). Gravity separation can be employed in the copper processing circuits by being integrated into the pre-flotation circuit to capture the gravity recoverable gold (GRG) and any free copper aiming to enhance the gold and copper recovery of the plant. When native copper and GRGs are present in the deposit, this integration not only facilitates plant overall performance via removal of the valuables early in the circuit, but it also reduces downstream operational expenditures due to less retention time of coarser copper particles in the system.

Canadian Nuclear Laboratories (CNL) is developing a disposal strategy for radioactive wastes, which contain significant amounts of uranium, cesium, and mercury. There are safety and economic incentives for the extraction of these elements before permanent storage in deep underground repositories. In addition, the actinide elements are also an important component in rare earth element (REE) ores and considered as impurities. Actinides separation from REE tailings is a significant concern in order to manage radioactive nuclides. Reprocessing mine wastes may present significant financial and environmental benefits. Experiments were carried out with radioactive cemented wastes (RCW) prepared at CanmetMINING. For all of the tested RCW batches, solubilisation yields are above 97% for Cs and 98% for U and Hg. Sulphuric acid leaching with potassium iodide improved the solubilisation of Hg by oxidation and formation of the tetraiodide complex (e.g. HgI4 2-, Kf = 2.1030). Cs and Hg were removed selectively by using potassium cobalt hexacyanoferrate (KCFC) and Lewatit TP214 ion-exchange resin respectively. U recovery using the chelating resin Lewatit TP260 was the most efficient. The presence of high iodine concentration improved the U uptake by the resin. The best U elution was obtained using 1 M Na2CO3, which resulted in 99% U recovery. U was then precipitated as sodium diuranate. One of the challenges of mine planning is to determine the most cost-effective replacement time for aging equipment. The lifespan of equipment, such as haul trucks and shovels, deployed in mining operations varies due to the nature of the material and ground conditions in which it operates. For engineering economists dealing with aging equipment, the options become an economic trade-off between higher maintenance cost versus the cost of new equipment. The discount rate plays a significant role in this decision; the higher the rate, the longer the economically optimal lifespan. Therefore, the ultimate question is: ?How can the relationship between the discount rate and the economically optimal lifespan be expressed mathematically??

"Pressure leaching and pressure oxidation in autoclaves are important alternatives in the extractive processing of gold, copper and nickel ores. The application of advanced control to pressure leach and pressure oxidation autoclaves could achieve significant benefits as has been shown in alumina pressure leaching. This paper compares and contrasts alumina digestion autoclaves to other mining autoclaves with respect to advanced controls. The application of advanced control in alumina with over 30 units controlled worldwide, and its benefits will be reviewed. The design and potential benefits from advanced control for pressure oxidation and leaching will be presented.INTRODUCTIONIt is this author's position and the purpose of this paper to propose that advanced control could be effectively applied to autoclaves in the nickel, gold, and copper mining processes. This is based on the proven effectiveness of advanced control on autoclaves used in the alumina industry for pressure leaching of bauxite ores. Incremental, but significant increases in production could be realized by applying advanced control to autoclaves, as evidenced by the alumina industry, and this not being implemented in other autoclaves in the mining industry.In addition, today the mining industry is being challenged to improve their production methods. In some markets like nickel, there is pressure to improve productivity and reduce the cash cost per ton. While in other markets like copper and gold, demand is vigorous with favourable pricing, and there are advantages to increase production and productivity given limited plant capacity. Advanced control has proven its capability to improve mineral processing operations through increases in throughput, recovery, as well as reducing variability. In today's mines, autoclaves are being used to a much larger scale and with much larger importance, thus it would be beneficial to improve operational performance through the use of advanced control.Accordingly, it is the author supposition that an opportunity exists in the mining industry to use a proven advanced control technology to improve the operations and financial performance of mines using autoclaves."

FOR many years Industrial Minerals, or as they were formerly called, 'the Non-Metallic Minerals', compared with the metallics, were considered of only minor importance and as such were given scant attention in the technical press as well as in the public press. Those days are, however, happily passing, and thanks, to an appreciable extent, to the constant endeavour of the Industrial Minerals Section of this Institute, established in the fall of 1932 industrial minerals are now assuming the importance to which they are entitled. The term 'Industrial Minerals', when first adopted in this sense by the Institute, was thought to be original in its application, but it is interesting to note that it had been used many years previously by the Queensland Geological Survey in the following publication: SALT Article 1 in Industrial Minerals by B. DUNSTAN, Chief Government Geologist (Publication No. 268, in Part) Queensland Geological Survey, Department of Mines, Brisbane 1920 In Queensland, however, the term embraced some of the metals as well as the non-metallic minerals proper. The lead furnished by Canada in this matter bore rapid fruit, and already the term 'Industrial Minerals' is widely used, not only throughout Canada but in the United States as well.

"Recent fluid inclusion and stable isotopic studies in the Bousquet mining district have identified spatial and temporal trends in mineralization temperatures and isotopic compositions of vein forming fluids. These studies indicate that mineralizing temperatures were lower during sterile vein formation (T=200-300°C) than during auriferous vein formation (T = 300-400°C), and that 8 80 values of minerals in sterile veins are lower by 1-3 %o than in associated auriferous veins. In addition to these small differences in 8 80 within individual mineralized zones, a trend of increasing 8 80 values of vein minerals is identified from west to east across the district, with 8 80 of vein minerals increasing by4-6%o. Quantitative evaluation of potential causes of the observed oxygen isotopic shifts suggests that the best explanation for these trends is the derivation of the mineralizing fluids from an isotopically inhomogeneous terrain in which the fluid isotopic compositions are controlled by the isotopic compositions of the host lithologies due to high rock/water ratios in these source terrains. This inhomogeneous source terrain is interpreted as consisting of the Blake River Group volcanics (low 8 80 component) and the adjoining Kewagama and Cadillac Group sediments (high 8 80 component).The genesis of the hydrothermal fluids is attributed to crustal heating during metamorphism, with the fluids representing metamorphic dewatering products and/or fluids incorporated during deposition and burial of the host lithologies. Ductile deformation of the fluid source regions impeded fluid migration during metamorphism; the ultimate release of the mineralizing fluids is attributed to the penetration to depth of vertical structures (fault and shear zones) during brittle deformation of the crust under waning metamorphic conditions. Release of fluids caused by this puncturing of the closed hydrologic source regime produced a localized zone of lowered pressure, drawing fluids from adjacent lithologies toward the fault zones, feeding further hydrothermal fluid upwelling. Au mineralization resulted from chemical processes related to cooling of the hydrothermal fluids and/or interaction with lithologies encountered during fluid migration; the level of crust at which Au deposition occurred likely migrated upward with the thermal anomaly caused by hydrothermal fluid upwelling, eventually reaching the level of current exploitation. Cessation of fluid flow along the vertical structures is attributed to inadequate recharge of the hydrothermal systems as fluid contents were depleted in the lithologies proximal to the vertical structures and/or sealing of the structures by mineral deposition."

This paper is based on the accident prevention pro-gram carried out in the coal mines of Alberta. It defines the role of the Alberta Mines Branch and of The Work-men's Compensation Board, and relates how a safety pro-gram was initiated. The formation of the Alberta Class 1 Mining Safety Council is also described. The responsibilities of both management and the individual worker are then outlined, and the main features of a successful accident prevention program are delineated. T HE purpose of this paper is not to repeat generalities and platitudes about industrial safety, but rather to relate the experience of Alberta coal mines during the past number of years in their efforts to keep accidents to a minimum. It has been learned from experience that many basic principles are as sound today as they were 20 years ago. How-ever the complexities of modern mining methods and the modern man or miner have created problems that did not exist then.

"There has been a continuous evolution with the use of pre-cast concrete elements in the construction of aluminum smelters. In 1990, Phase I of Alouette was built using cast-in-place concrete exclusively. Whereas, other AP 30 technology plants such as Hillside 2 in the mid-1990s used pre-cast concrete beams with cast-in-place floors. Mozal 2, in 2002, used pre-cast concrete beams with pre-cast partial-slab operating floors. Alouette Phase II went further. Not only were the potroom building beams and floors pre-cast, but the entire pot support system, insulating walls and basement jersey walls were pre-cast. Once the techniques for bending and welding the reinforcement bars and the design for attaching electrical insulating plates to the concrete was perfected, the challenge for the project remained only in the logistics of transporting the pieces to site and simple erection. The overall impact on the project was dramatic. Using prefabricated concrete not only allowed advancement of the schedule, but totally eliminated formwork, re-bar installation, and form removal activities along with the handling of all the materials involved with these activities. With the elimination of these labour and material-intensive portions of the job, exposure to work injuries was dramatically reduced. The most prevalent activity for lost time accidents is during the rough work associated with concrete formwork, placing concrete and form removal. Another area where prefabricated elements were successfully used on Alouette Phase II was for the insulating walls enclosing the pot area, known as the ""claustra walls"". Usually these walls are constructed in-situ using mortar and breeze block. Success was also achieved with prefabrication of the perimetric walls that are installed at the lower floor of the potroom. A big advantage of using prefabricated concrete in the electrolysis area is in assuring electrical isolation for the operating floors. Introduction The property of Rouyn Merger Gold Mines, Limited, is in Rouyn and Joannès townships, Western Quebec, seven miles east of the town of Rouyn. Traversing it is the east-west trending Cadillac-Bouzan fault. Diamond drilling in 1944 and 1945 along a shear zone south of the fault indicated an ore deposit lying at the contact between sedimentary and volcanic rocks and dipping approximately 60° to the northwest. In the summer of 1945 it was decided to sink a shaft to investigate the indicated ore zone. In the immediate vicinity of the deposit, bed-rock is overlain by clay beds, in some places as much as 70 feet thick. Consequently, possible shaft sites were limited to those locations where overburden would not be excessive. The most favourable site was about 125 feet to the south of the ore zone as projected vertically from bed-rock to the surface. Accordingly, it was decided to sink the shaft at this point, with an inclination of 60° N. W., paralleling the dip of the ore zone.

"The Hidden Creek mine is about l~ miles north of the north end of Granby bay; a nearly landlocked body of water on the west side of Observatory inlet; 90 miles north of Prince Rupert; British Columbia.The main haulage way of the mine at 385 feet above sea-level has been driven north into the somewhat precipitous end of a north-south ridge that rises from the tide flats between the east and west forks of Hidden creek. The outcrops of the principal orebodies, two prominent bluffs of stained rocks and sulphides, were higher on the face of the ridge and extended from about 530 to 850 feet elevation. North from the bluff tops, the ridge comb rose gradually to about 1,200 feet elevation. The name of the discoverer and the date of discovery of the Hidden Creek orebodies are probably unknown, but the discoverer is believed to have been an Indian from one of the reservations along Observatory inlet. The deposit was brought to the attention of John Flewin, Government Agent at Post Simpson, near the beginning of the present century. Mr. M. K. Rodgers, developer of the Nickel Plate mine at Hedley, did the first organized work on the deposits. Next the Hidden Creek Copper Company prospected the property. Rodgers acquired the prospect a second time, did more work, and finally in 1910 optioned the property to the Granby Consolidated Mining, Smelting and Power Company, Limited, at that time operating at Phoenix and Grand Forks in the Boundary district of British Columbia. The optionees stepped up the development work and brought the property to production in 1914. The ores were direct smelted until 1924. In that year a mill was built. From 1930 until the end of the productive life of the properties in 1935, all of the ore was milled and the concentrate smelted. From March 17, 1914, until July 31, 1935, the production from the Hidden Creek mine was, in round numbers, 18,000,000 tons of 1.70 per cent copper ore and 6,000,000 tons of low grade dilution rock. The Hidden Creek mine ""died with its boots on"". During 1934 the average monthly production was 146,377 tons of 1.06 per cent copper ore. For 7 months of 1935 the average was 161,750 tons of 1.03 per cent ore, and for the final month, July 1935, the production was 156,950 tons."

"IntroductionCyanidation is the principal process for extracting gold from ores . Many primary gold ores, however, are partially or totally refractory in the conventional cyanidation process.Considerable success has been achieved with new gold leaching techniques, such as intensive cyanidation, pressure cyanidation, carbon-in-leach cyanidation, etc. These techniques however, do not offer substantial gains in gold extraction from refractory pyrites.The more drastic pretreatment processes such as roasting, chemical oxidation, autoclave oxidation, and bacterial oxidation all utilize oxidation to break down the structures of pyrite and arsenopyrite. This generally renders the gold amenable to cyanidation.Comparative cost studies indicate that the oldest commercial pretreatment method, i.e. high temperature roasting, is currently the least expensive option if the sulphuric acid can be sold. It operates with air at atmospheric pressure and is characterized by fast reaction rates. For an alternative hydrometallurgical con centrate treatment method to be competitive, it too should operate with air at atmospheric pressure and with fast reaction rates. The NITROX process meets these conditions."

Introduction The season of 1927, from the point of view of mining development in the area west of Rouyn, was quite satisfactory. Serious prospecting and development' were undertaken over quite a large area, though the results in the matter of discovering new deposits of economic importance were rather disappointing. A large amount of systematic prospecting and geological mapping was carried out in the course of the work, and a considerable body of information collected. A widespread occurrence of sulphide mineralization was noted, chiefly near bodies of older gabbro. The frequent occurrence of pyrrhotite in or near which local concentrations of chalcopyrite were localized, lends support to the idea that such older sulphides as pyrite and pyrrhotite are relatively easy of replacement by chalcopyrite. From the prospector's viewpoint, areas near the contacts of masses of older gabbro are favourable prospecting ground, and pyrite and pyrrhotite mineralization are favourable indications that massive chalcopyrite may be found where it has completely replaced such sulphides. Pyrrhotite being magnetic is easily located, even where drift covered, by the use of such convenient instruments as the dip-needle and the magnetometer. It is suggested that pyrrhotite bodies, when located, be thoroughly prospected because of the fairly strong probability that they may show replacement by the more valuable chalcopyrite.

"A computational method based on a continuum-mechanical approach to simulate rock cutting is developed and evaluated. The aim is to obtain the local loading acting at the cutting pick during operation. The explicit FEM is chosen to model the pick-rock interaction. The presented method takes advantage of (i) an advanced material model (ii) a robust contact algorithm and (iii) fast calculations due to parallelization. A damage-plasticity law is chosen and modified with user-subroutines. A user integrated element deletion routine evades critical mesh distortions. Infinite elements at the model boundaries avoid unrealistic deformation wave reflection.INTRODUCTIONExcavation in mining and tunneling is a costly and complex process. Special equipment such as the roadheader (Figure 1) is employed to cut the rock in the excavation process but high material strengths limit their usability (Tockner 1999). Nowadays a challenge is to extend their field of application to harder and more abrasive rock materials. The forces on the pick (Figure 2) are of great importance and determine wear and especially the efficiency of the machine. Figure 2 shows the principle of cutting and the predominant forces. The variation of pick geometry, cutting depth or attack angle will result in an alteration of these forces and determine the efficiency of the process (Tockner 1999). The mechanisms of rock cutting follow the principle of indentation (Kou et al. 1999). Directly under the indenter a hydrostatic stress state evolves causing the material to fail only due to crushing and fragmentation mechanisms. In the close surroundings large strains emerge and tensile cracks are formed but in a further distance the material behaves elastically."

THE Lake Shore mine has been developed by two vertical shafts, with level intervals at 200 feet to the 2200 level and at 125 feet below this horizon. A main cross-cut joins the two shafts on all levels to the bottom of No. 3 shaft, and opening into these cross-cuts are the ore passes and sand passes, which are completed from surface To the 4450 level. In the west part of the mine, additional connections have been made between No. 1 and No. 2 veins, through which the major part of the ore from No. 2 vein west is routed to drifts in No. 1 vein. With the lesser amount of stoping on No. 1 vein, this arrangement permits better haulage to be maintained. The ore passes are driven at 50 degrees from the ends of short cross-cuts off the main ones and are broken through to the levels above at the mouths of the short cross-cuts, to allow for dumping on each level. The passes are controlled at each level by ball-and-chain gates and deliver to crushers and thence to loading pockets, shown in Figure 1. That system is quite flexible in that it is possible to by-pass the crushers at any station and load from either shaft at a number of different pockets. The sand passes are driven from the main cross-cuts at the same inclination as, and parallel to, the ore passes. Each is equipped with a chute and dump hole, so that waste or sand fill may be loaded or dumped at each level. A transfer door, hinged on the bottom, is installed opposite the chute for by-passing fill from one level to the next, and in the closed position protects the opening at the top of the pass. The dump hole situated beside the transfer door is protected by a grizzly with 10-inch spaces. Waste rock may be withdrawn from the system through No. 3 shaft loading pocket at the 2950 level to a waste bin on surface. Levels are developed by drifts in No. 1 and No. 2 veins for their entire lengths. Subsidiary breaks are followed at a later date, when full information has been obtained by exploration, and a considerable amount of development by sub-drifts is carried out in the upper part of the mine, particularly in more or less erratic sections of No. 1 vein.
