Alteration and mineralisation at the Island Copper deposit is related to the intrusion of Early Jurassic quartz feldspar porphyry dykes into surrounding comagmatic Bonanza volcanic rocks. The pyrophyllite alteration zone forms an upward flaring cone, largely hosted within a breccia body that c ross-cuts the Cu, Mo, and Au-rich ore shell. This alteration zone contains pyrophyllite, dumortierite and diaspore and resembles alteration occurring in some high-sulfidation deposits, but which is barren. Fluid mineral equilibria and fluid inclusion studies indicate formation at approximately 300 ¦C from fluids dominated by steam and gases. These fluids appear highly acidic, but sulfur poor, leading to extreme base leaching within the breccia body and surrounding rocks.

Oxidation of artificial Imperial Smelting Furnace lead bullion was performed during cooling between 1180 and 820°C in order to attempt to produce a tin-rich dross.The addition of sodium carbonate together with stirring increased the tin content of the dross when oxidation was carried out with air or PbO on zinc-free bullion.Zinc in the bullion during oxidation resulted in a decrease in tin concentration of the dross due to zinc oxidation and copper entering the dross.

The Deep Mill Level Zone (DMLZ) skarn Cu-Au deposit is the deepest explored part of the Ertsberg East Skarn System extending from the surface at 4200 m elevation to the DMLZ at 2900 to 2600 m. The DMLZ is hosted in an upper Cretaceous to lower Tertiary siliciclastic and carbonate succession adjacent to the 3 Ma Ertsberg pluton. Much of the DMLZ ore is hosted by mixed assemblages of siliciclastic and dolomitised carbonate strata that have been altered to Mg-rich skarn assemblages. Unaltered equivalent strata from a 300 m cored interval in the Yellow Valley Syncline were characterised petrographically and representative samples were analysed for major element compositions. These stratigraphic and chemical units are interpreted to be responsible for the varying skarn lithologies within the DMLZ. The dominant prograde skarn assemblages are controlled by protolith composition, notably the relative abundance of quartz, dolomite, and calcite within the protolith. Models based on isochemical metamorphism of mixed assemblages of quartz and dolomite suggest that the formation of the forsterite-diopside dominant skarn assemblages resulted in the greatest amount of pore space increase. DMLZ Cu-Au concentrations were locally controlled by host lithology, with structural features providing fluid pathways that focused the mineralising fluids. Based on a principle developed at a South African Mine, the CSIR developed a device with which the alignment of guide rails in mine shafts could be measured. Originally the technique could only be used to obtain guide misalignment values at the bunton sets. At the time this was considered adequate since it was assumed that guide realignment could only be done at the support points anyway. The technology was developed further and now it is possible to obtain æcontinuousÆ guide profiles from the measurements. Software was developed with which a guide realignment schedule can be drafted and the shape of the realigned guides can be predicted. A measuring system based on this technology is being used to conduct guide alignment measurements in shafts. The data is then analysed and a realignment schedule is recommended in consultation with the mine. Such a schedule may be prioritised so that the worst sections in the shaft are dealt with first. The measurement hardware and analysis software are described. Examples are presented that illustrate the principles and highlight measurement errors. A case study illustrates measurements recorded in a newly equipped shaft. A repeat measurement, 18 months later, shows the effect of recommended realignment as well as the change in guide alignment over this period.

A study of the effect of nickel on the cupellation process has shown that a very low "nickel limit" must be imposed for cupellation (0·08 grams nickel or 0·05 grams when copper is present). In the presence of slightly greater amounts of nickel, lead tends to spreadon the cupel with detachment of drops from the main lead pool. In crucible fusions nickel contaminates the lead button to a small extent, and this contamination is increased.in the presence of either iron or copper. Nickel also causes "shotting" of the lead, this effect being more apparent in the presence of iron.Both the spreading during cupellation and the shotting during crucible fusion are considered to be caused by adsorption of insoluble NiO at the Pb-PbO interface, lowering the interfacial tension.Excess litharge crucible charges are' fused at 116boC. to eliminate shotting. A brief· soaking in molten basic litharge slag effectively reduces the nickel content of lead buttons. The solubility of silver in litharge slags is considerably decreased in the presence of nickel. Corrections can be applied for silver losses in slags but these corrections are not as accurate as with copper ores.INTRODUCTIONThis paper on the effects of nickel on fire assays for silver is the second of an intended series describing investigations into the fire assaying method.In the first paper, discussing the effect of copper on fire assaying processes (Guerin, 1957), it was shown that certain elements, because of their relatively low affinities for oxygen, will tend to contaminate the lead button during crucible fusion and scorification. Nickel, having a slightly greater affinity for oxygen than has lead, would be expected to be oxidized and slagged readily, and would not be expected to appear in the metal phase (lead button) to any appreciable extent. The level of wire rope technology used in mine hoisting applications has a significant effect on the overall efficiency of the hoisting system. This paper discusses the effect that a reduction in rope mass per unit length and an increase in rope breaking strength can have on rock skip capacity and hence mine shaft output. A 20 per cent reduction in rope mass per metre for a typical 48 mm hoisting rope, while maintaining the breaking strength, increases the skipÆs capacity by circa 30 per cent at a suspended rope length of 3000 m. Such gains in shaft output, without any significant changes to the shaft or winder design, can have major implications for the feasibility of future deep mine projects. The technical challenge for rope manufacturers is how to get rid of 20 to 30 per cent of the rope mass while keeping the breaking strength and modulus of elasticity of the whole rope constant. CASAR are currently developing steel wire rope constructions where the steel IWRC has been replaced with high strength, high modulus fibres such as Kevlar«, Spectra« and Dyneema«. One of the key aspects of such composite rope designs is to ensure equal load sharing between the different rope components, ie in proportion to their area. If there is a significant difference in modulus between the fibre core and the steel outer strands, the core may not carry its proper proportion of the load and the outer strands would be overloaded. Some technical aspects of the design of composite steel wire ropes are discussed. A design and operational issue that needs careful consideration is the safe non destructive testing (NDT) of composite ropes. Traditional magnetic NDT would only be capable of inspecting the steel wires. Techniques therefore need to be developed that would give operators a reliable indication of the condition of the load bearing fibre core. This paper also discusses possible solutions to this very important NDT question.

The Main Zone and Waterline pit lakes at the Equity Silver Mine near Houston, BC (Canada) are the sites of an ongoing three-year government- and industry-funded research program. In order to assess the feasibility of various bio-remediation strategies, field-scale manipulations were conducted using enclosed mesocosms (limnocorrals). Two manipulation strategies were tested: addition of algal nutrients (phosphate and nitrate) to Main Zone Pit surface waters; and addition of algal nutrients (surface waters) and dissolved organic carbon (deep waters) to the Waterline Pit. Nutrient addition was conducted in order to stimulate algal production and enhance metal scavenging by biogenic particles, while dissolved organic carbon (ethanol) was added to increase oxygen demand and foster the development of sulfate reduction in pit bottom waters. Fertilisation resulted in rapid growth of natural phytoplankton populations in the surface waters of both pits. In the Main Zone Pit, the stimulation of algal growth resulted in the pronounced removal of both dissolved and total metals (Zn and Cu) from surface waters, with higher rates of metal removal being observed at higher nutrient additions. Metal removal could be attributed to the scavenging of dissolved metals by biogenic particles and subsequent particle settling. A similar pattern of removal from surface waters was observed in Waterline Pit (Zn and Cd). The addition of ethanol to deep waters in Waterline Pit was effective in promoting sulfate reduction in the lower layer. The development of reducing conditions resulted in near-quantitative removal of dissolved Zn and Cd, presumably as secondary metal sulfides. Iron, As and Ni profiles in Waterline Pit exhibited no evidence of removal from either surface waters or bottom waters. Collectively, the results demonstrate that the passive forms of bioremediation tested in these pit lakes may be effective for whole pit-lake remediation.

Gold mining cyanide-bearing solutions can pose a risk, cause significant wildlife deaths and adverse public relations and result in non-compliance with regulatory conditions. The International Cyanide Management Code for the Manufacture, Transport and Use of Cyanide in the Production of Gold (the Code) was developed as a voluntary code to encourage industry-wide improvements in managing cyanide responsibly. The Code requires design and implementation of robust monitoring programs for compliance under the following standards of practice: 4.1, 4.4 and 4.9. A robust monitoring regime can be complicated as each processing and tailing system is different. The following systems are commonly used in Australia: carbon-in-leach (CIL); carbon-in-pulp (CIP); heap leach process ponds; tailing waste disposal systems; peripheral discharge, central discharge and in-pit disposal. Some terrestrial wildlife can be denied access by fencing tailing storage facilities (TSFs) or other physical barriers, therefore limiting wildlife interaction with cyanide-bearing tailing and solutions to mainly birds and bats. While wildlife monitoring programs for processing and TSFs contain similar core attributes, it is necessary to adapt monitoring to take into account the site-specific features of each system. These core attributes are discussed in this paper, with reference made to cyanide concentration and associated methodologies. The issue is considerably complicated if tailing solutions are deemed or discovered to be toxic to wildlife. Essentially cyanides are required to be measured to gain an understanding of the concentrations to which wildlife may be exposed. This usually equates to measuring the cyanide concentration of solutions entering and leaving a tailing system. To assess the risk to wildlife presented by tailing and heap leach systems it is necessary to monitor both the hazard (cyanide concentrations) and the exposure (live wildlife species, presence and interaction). These tasks need not be arduous and a system of simple frequent monitoring has been developed and implemented for Code compliance. The wildlife monitoring developed by Donato Environmental Services (DES) and used at mining operations departs from the industry norm. It documents observer effort, live wildlife presence, habitat and behaviour in a tailing system, as well as deaths and carcasses. A greater understanding of wildlife cyanide toxicosis associated with this monitoring approach will enable mining companies to adopt a proactive approach to significantly reduce, or preferably eliminate, the impact on wildlife and assist in gaining Code compliance.

Projected cooling requirements for ERPM led to the first proposals for the large- scale use of ice for mine cooling in the early 1980's. Following successful research into ice conveying and ice melting a large ice plant was commissioned at Harmony in 1985 and a much larger 6000 ton per day plant is presently under construction at ERPM. A brief description of the mining project is given, followed by general descriptions of the surface ice plants and the ice conveying system, the systems for using the ice for mine cooling, and the control of the whole ice cooling System.

The tenor of the ore varies'aec'ording'to the quantity of gangue in the orebody and- also to the nature of the part- icular ore minerals. The main ore.mine.rals are the oxides pyrolusite and cryptomelane and the 'o'xide-silicate braunite. The main gangue minerals are hematite, limonite and quartz. The deposits of high grade oreò(-above.45 per cent Mn) range in size from 50 tons to many thousands of tons but most of them are in the 500-5,000-tons r .nge .

Solid Energy New Zealand Limited (æSolid EnergyÆ) is a state-owned coal mining company, producing 4.0 Mtpa from a number of opencast and underground mines in the Huntly, West Coast and Southland regions in New Zealand. The company currently exports 2.1 Mtpa of coking coal. Exports are expected to grow strongly over the next five year as the company expands production into new semi-soft and thermal coal reserves. Domestic coal demand is also expected to grow strongly, particularly in the North Island, as the Maui gas field reserves diminish, and thermal coal becomes more important for electricity generation and meeting the energy needs of forest processing and other industries. The Peak Gold Mines Pty Ltd (PGM) operations are located approximately 9 km south of Cobar, NSW. PGM currently mines and treats ore from three separate orebodies within 5 km of the original plant. Production from the original Peak orebody ceased in April 2002, with ore currently sourced from underground at New Occidental and Perseverance, while New Cobar supplies ore from an open cut mine. In March 2003, Wheaton Minerals Asia Pacific purchased the operation from Rio Tinto who operated the mine for around ten years. The Perseverance deposit is situated between 600 and 1000 m south of the Peak orebody. Access is via shaft from Peak to 630 m below surface and then by decline to the northern end of the deposit locally known as Zone A. Development of the resource commenced mid 2002 to set up for a long hole open stoping operation at 25 m level spacing. The first production stope was successfully brought on line December 2003. The Perseverance deposit is hosted by sediments and volcanics along the eastern margin of the Devonian Cobar basin and is one of many deposits with the Cobar Gold Field. The Cobar Gold Field has produced approximately 2.5 million ounces of gold since 1880. The Perseverance area had long been considered prospective due to the presence of old workings at the southern extensions of Peak line of lode. Significant mineralisation was first discovered at Perseverance in 1994 when PGM drilled a hole targeted 950 m below the historic workings. The target was based on an apparent plunge to the stratigraphic controls to the Peak Orebody. Subsequent exploration within and around the ægreaterÆ Perseverance area has been significantly aided through the use of downhole electro-magnetic surveys due to the close spatial association between gold and sulfide mineralisation.

This is a welcome opportunity to exchange ideas about educating for a profession in mining and metallurgy, and I shall use it to highlight the ways in which educators, the industry, and the profession can help one another make that educa- tion better. This is home ground for me in more ways than one. As the executive head of a uni- versity perhaps I may speak as an educator; and there is still, I hope, enough of the metallurgist in me to allow me to speak of what we metal- lurgists and mining engineers can do to help the educators. Another interest should be declared, too. Among the educating agencies I shall focus on universities; among universities I shall further focus on my own, the University of New South Wales. I know it best; and, more to the point, we are one of the minority that offer a full profes- sional training in mining and metallurgy. Further, we are as a university very much concerned- more than most-with specifically professional education, and especially with education in the professions based on science and technology. Mining and metallurgy have of course played a central role, from earliest times onwards, in the history and development of science and tech- nology. In that role they have been both pro- ducers and consumers of new knowledge. Indeed the whole new attitude to knowledge that began to spread in 16th and 17th century Europe owed a great deal to the interests and traditions of the miner and the metallurgist. The first modern text- book of mining and metallurgy, George Agricola's De Re Metallica, is very much more than a spec- ialist handbook; it is a major landmark in intel- lectual and cultural history.

This paper summarises the performance of the gold exploration industry in the Western World since 1970, with particular emphasis on the period 1985 - 2003. It identifies the number and size of major (ie >1 million ounce) primary gold discoveries made over this period by location and type of company. Estimates are also made of the likely contribution from smaller discoveries down to 0.1 million ounces. It also assesses the overall trend in the percentage of grassroot discoveries that are converted into mines, and the time taken to get them into production. By comparing the discovery data against total exploration expenditures it is possible to determine the average unit cost of finding a major gold deposit. It is significant to note that the average unit cost per discovery and per ounce of resource has tripled over the last 30 years. An attempt is made to determine the overall economic value generated by the industry. This is based on a detailed analysis of the rates of return and the Net Present Values (NPVs) of 109 major gold projects. After including an adjustment for discoveries not modelled, the NPVs are compared against the total amount of money spent on exploration to determine the value-to-cost ratio for the industry. Based on historical spot gold prices and tax rules, it is found that the return on investment for gold exploration in the Western World over the period 1985 - 2003 was around five per cent real after-tax. The returns achieved in the US and Australia was significantly higher than that for Canada. The returns also appear to have declined in recent years. With regard to the relative performance of junior versus major companies, the paper estimates that the junior sector accounted for 30 - 40 per cent of the total exploration expenditure, and were was associated with 34 per cent of the total number of major deposits, 27 per cent of the contained ounces and 25 per cent of the economic value found.

This paper deals briefly with the geology and mineralisation of the Ediacara Mineral Field, which is located about 300 miles north of Adelaide in the Mount James Range.The field was discovered sane time prior to 1872. Total recorded production for the field amounts to a few hundred tons of lead and 36 tons of copper. Re-listing of the field during 1961-62 led to its classification as a Mississippi Valley type deposit. Diamond drilling has partly outlined the spread of mineralisation and confirmed its stratiform distribution,Sources for the metals are suggested and various possible mechanisms. of deposition are described.

In the early ages man contented himself with the use of such tools and appliances as would assist him in the enlightenment of his labours. With the advancement of science, numerous motives, with modifications and adaptations, have been introduced to enlighten labours, and in many cases have taken the place of man, but it can hardly be said that this applies to shovels, although one of the oldest implements of labour; certainly, with the introduction of the steam shovel the labours of man have been considerably reduced, but the hand shovel of today is used similarly to that of years ago.If the principle of the hand shovel has not been improved upon, it must not be suggested that the manufacturers of this article are not endeavouring to improve its quality, and the main point with which the manufacturers have to contend is the production of an article which will give a maximum of durability combined with a minimum of lightness. In order to accomplish this they must select suitable material, and subject it to such heat treatment process that will produce a shovel having a maximum of hardness and toughness without being unduly brittle, and which will withstand the excessive wear to which it is subjected.In this article an endeavour will be made to explain (a) the manufacture of shovels; (b) the defects commonly met with-the cause of same and measures which are necessary to remedy them.Before doing so a brief description will be given of the class of steel used for shovels; this is an important factor, and a steel which is admirably suitable is a plain carbon one containing approximately 55 - 70% C., and closely resembles that used for the manufacture of railway rails. This plain carbon steel is very extensively used, although at present alloy steels are being utilised to a certain extent for shovel manufacture, and with suitable heat-treatment.

A risk-based approach to optimising pit wall slope angles was trialled in the design of a 60m deep open pit in extremely weathered and distinctly weathered materials in the Kalgoorlie area. The pit used for this approach was Stage 1 of a three-stage open pit project. The Stage 3 pit will require long term stability, as it will contain the portal for a long life underground project. Information from failures induced by steeper wall angles used in the Stage 1 pit would be valuable in predicting and preventing long-term stability issues in Stage 3. In this approach, the pit wall slopes are based not on the normal factors of safety, but on the assessment of the probability of failure and the direct and indirect costs of dealing with the failure when it occurs. In this example, the benefits and risks of adopting steeper wall angles were compared in a series of graphs. These charted the increasing probability of failure and simultaneous decreasing factors of safety with increasing pit wall slope, and the range in the possible volumes of circular failures for increasing wall angles. These were brought together in a graph showing the potential excavation savings (in BCM) and the probable cost of a failure (probability of failure times the probable volume of the failure). The resulting pit design was based on the project Mining EngineerÆs semi-quantitative assessment of where and when a higher risk of failure was acceptable and where it was not acceptable as it may have unduly affected the integrity of haul roads or production. The design incorporated wider than normal berm widths to accommodate anticipated failures and to enable modification of the wall configuration if required. Several re-designs were required during the life of the project in response to aggressively induced failures. It is considered that this risk-based approach provides a practical route to optimal pit design and operation but it requires an experienced, dedicated and efficient mining team for it to be implemented with benefit.

The Australian Magnesium Corporation Limited (AMC) is constructing the worldÆs largest magnesium metal plant at Stanwell, 24 km west of Rockhampton in Central Queensland. The $1.3 billion, 97 000 tonne per year plant is scheduled to commence production in mid-2004. It will produce magnesium from magnesite using the innovative, locally developed AM Process Technology which enables magnesium to be produced at internationally competitive costs. The technology will enable the plant to have the lowest environmental impact of all the available magnesium production processes. The project will meet current world-best-practice environmental and emission standards while on a life cycle analysis, magnesium produced by the Stanwell plant will result in net reduction in global greenhouse gas emissions. Magnesium is the lightest of the structural metals. Its high strength to weight ratio and ease of casting and machinability makes it particularly suitable for the manufacture of light weight automotive components. Reducing the weight of motor vehicles through the use of light weight materials such as magnesium is the current primary means adopted by the automobile manufacturing industry to improve motor vehicle fuel efficiency and the lowering of emissions of greenhouse gases. The Australian Magnesium or AM process has been developed over the past decade by AMC in conjunction with the CSIRO to produce magnesium from magnesite mined at AMCÆs Kunwarara deposit. Over $200 million has been spent developing the AM process, designing, building and operating a demonstration plant at Gladstone and to complete an environmental impact statement and receive environmental approvals as well as funding for the commercial Stanwell Project. The paper outlines the development of the AM process technology, the operations of the Gladstone demonstration plant confirming the process technology, its operating costs and environmental performance. The paper covers the particular attention that was given to minimising the production of CHCÆs, the development of new cover gases for molten magnesium, the minimising of emissions of greenhouse gases and the life cycle analysis of magnesium as a replacement for steel and heavier metals in motor vehicles which confirmed its use resulted in a net reduction in global greenhouse gas emissions. The project received both Commonwealth and Queensland Government environmental approvals by August 2000.

Geometallurgy is an emerging, cross-disciplinary field that integrates spatial models of rock properties with time-based outcomes of mining and treatment processes. Geometallurgical variables include any rock property that has a positive or negative effect on the business. Some of the more critical geometallurgical variables include recovery, grindability, throughput, power consumption, mineralogy and content of deleterious materials. These variables drive project costs and revenues in a fundamental way and thus geometallurgy has potential to positively impact on the value of strategic and tactical decisions across many mining organisations. Geometallurgical models, like traditional grade-only models are based on samples collected from the mineralised and non-mineralised regions of the deposit. The nature of some non-grade variables, particularly those that are dependent on the ore treatment processes, requires special consideration during sampling and subsequent spatial modelling. Failing to objectively consider the characteristics of variables may seriously compromise the validity of the sample selection, sample treatment, data models and the subsequent decisions. In addition to addressing the vexed question of collecting an æunbiased and representativeÆ sample, the sampling and modelling approach must consider issues of scale, both geostatistical support and also the relationship between bench-scale data and operational-scale mineral processing performance. This paper proposes a framework (the Primary-Response framework) for the classification of geometallurgical variables. This framework is designed to assist with developing sampling approaches and identifying the most appropriate spatial modelling approach. The proposed framework can also help identify the risks associated with designing, sampling and modelling of both types of geometallurgical variables. The Primary-Response framework divides variables into two categories; primary variables and response variables. How a variable is classified in this framework depends on the degree to which the variable reflects either an intrinsic attribute of the rock (æprimaryÆ) or its response to measurement processes (æresponseÆ). Depending on the classification in this framework, appropriate sampling and modelling decisions can be made to minimise the risk associated with the incorrect treatment of the variable. In particular, the authors argue that for response variables, the approach taken to building spatial models may need to be different to conventional linear averaging approaches (for example kriging).

The Centre, constructed by the WA Government at a cost of $16 million and occupied in late-1994, comprises three separate buildings housing the CSIRO Division of Minerals, Curtin University's School of Chemical Engineering and the Mineral Processing Laboratory of the Department of Minerals and Energy. The emphasis on R&D at the Centre is primarily in hydrometallurgy as a result of staff expertise, extensive bench and pilot-scale facilities, track record with the industry and, very importantly, two of the occupiers being partners in the AJ Parker Cooperative Research Centre for Hydrometallurgy. Staff in the Centre have a long involvement with R&D agencies such as AMIRA and MERIWA. The hydrometallurgical focus of the Centre complements that of pyrometallurgy at the GK Williams CRC in Melbourne and the Centre for Mining Technology and Equipment in Brisbane, to ensure that the mineral processing industry in Australia has access to a complete range of expertise and facilities to serve its needs.
