Although geophysical methods of prospecting have proved indispensable in the search or oil deposits elsewhere; it is only 'in recent years that they have been used to any significant extent in Australia. The increase in their use has been quite remarkable over the past two or three years, due in Sao small measure to the encouragement given by means of Commonwealth subsidy. There is no doubt that the use of' geophysical methods will coxi-tinue to increase and this increase could be greatly accelerated as and when oil is discovered in commercial quantities,This review of their use A in Australia and the remarks and statistics are confined to work on the mainland. There has been, a substantial amount of geophysical work in Papua, but as operating conditions are so very different to the mainland Papua has been regarded as a separate province.

The successful `marriage' between a company seeking to raise funds to develop a project and their financiers calls for a strong mutual understanding of each other's needs. For a company attempting to raise funding, the alternative methods are ever expanding. The optimum method will vary depending on the financial position, risk/reward outlook of the company and the strength of the project for which development capital is being sought. It is likely that small mining companies will need to raise equity funds for advancing projects to the development stage. At that time, they will probably still require a reasonable level of shareholder equity to meet the requirements of banks and other parties to cover potential cost over-runs on the project and feasibility costs. Larger companies, however, are likely to find it much easier and cheaper to raise debt from banks. When evaluating companies and projects for funding, banks will pay particular attention to the quality and experience of management in developing similar projects and it may be necessary for some companies to retain the services of outside consultants. Before a project needs funding, companies should meet with potential financiers to develop relationships to select and ensure a smooth transaction to funding in the future.

The northern margin of the Arunta Block is characterized by a metasedimentary and volcanic sequence of lower metamorphic grade than that of the central Arunta Block. Whereas the Harts Ranges have granulite to amphibolite metamor- phic grades, the northern margin only reached greenschist to lower amphibolite facies. Most of the high grade area of the central Arunta Block appears to be unprospective, but the lower grade marginal fringe contains most mineral pros- pects to name a few: Barrow Creek, Molyhill and the Jervois Mine. Numerous smaller prospects occur in this marginal zone. Four major lithostratigraphic units can be recognized in the Jervois Mine area: 1. Gneissic Suite consisting of granitic and rhyolitic gneisses which are characterized by a distinct intersection lineation. 2. Metasedimentary Suite of cordierite- biotite schists and chlorite-biotite schists. 3. Mine Sequence, consisting of spotted schists with andalusite and cordierite, quartz- sericite-feldspar schists with distinct rhyo- litic remnants and quartz-sericite-feldspar schists which contain the lode horizons:

Increasingly, consideration is being given to the nominal `outcomes' of degree courses in engineering, including mining engineering. These are concerned not only with knowledge and technical understanding but also with capabilities in the professional application of engineering principles to problem solving, multi-disciplinary teamwork, communication and life-long learning. This paper discusses concepts of education, professional formation and training and the associated development of competencies in applying knowledge, understanding and technical insights and skills to new situations. In developing guidelines on preferred attributes and competencies in graduate mining engineers, a survey was conducted of a range of industry personnel involved in selecting graduate mining engineers. The results not only clarified the spectrum of competencies sought but also provided valuable detailed views to assist in defining a mining engineering curriculum. Considering a greater concern with the development of more `well-rounded' graduates, the implications are discussed with regard to teaching and assessment activities and the time demands on academic staff when a `coaching' role is emphasised. In line with international and Australian moves in engineering education, notions on education of mining engineering graduates in Australia are under review. The results will provide continuing challenges to all involved.

THE alkaline method for the estimation of zinc cannot, in the writer's opinion, be relied. upon to within very narrow limits between two assayers on unknown quantities of zinc. The end point is not decisive enough, and allows the personal factor toenter largely into the assay. The following investigation was undertaken to see how accurate the acid method is on Broken Hill concentrates and ores, and what should be the limit between the results of two assayers. The method adopted is as follows:Weigh sufficient amount of ore to give titration (between 20 and 50 cc.), place in tall 400 cc. beaker, cover, add 7 cc. nitric acid and heat till brown fumes cease to be evolved. Wash dock glass into assay, add potassium chlorate, evaporate to dryness on a slow fire with the beaker uncovered. When no smell of chlorine or nitric acid is observed, remove and cool. Add 100 cc. boiling water, then 7 grm. ammonium chloride, W cc. ammonia (.880 sp. gr.), boil for five minutes, filter, wash...

A sustained eight-year major research effort has been undertaken in South Africa to develop integrated passive water treatment systems for the sustainable removal of sulfates, while simultaneously addressing the removal of metals and acidity. The research effort addressed the problem both at a fundamental science level and at the more empirical pilot plant level. Whereas there are numerous anaerobic sulfate reducing reactors in operation on mine waters that remove some sulfate together with metals and acidity, these are typically plagued by low sulfate removal efficiency and gradual reductions in overall reactor efficiency with time. The South African research effort has focused on understanding the fundamental microbiological and biochemical reactions that occur in anaerobic reactors filled with lignocellulosic material and subjected to high sulfate water. Hypotheses have been developed that differentiate the reactions occurring in such a reactor into groups that should be individually optimised and these hypotheses have been verified through rigorous laboratory and pilot scale studies. The results of this research are incorporated into a patented multi-stage integrated passive treatment system that is capable of sustained high rate removal of sulfates, metals and acidity.

The introduction of legal certification of mine managers is a matter of history. It was introduced as part of legislation for mine safety. It has been said that such legislat- ion was written in blood. Like all legislation this legislation is divided into three sections; commands, obligations and sanctions. While legislation in all States on this subject is similar, the differences are great enough to have prompted the preparation of a Uniform Code by the Annual Conference of Chief Inspectors of Mines. This Uniform Code has not been adopted fully by any State to date. Legal certification of mine managers has made managers more aware of the requirements of the legislation covering their industry, legislation that reads as a summary on past accidents and methods of preventing them. While budding managers spend considerable' time in their early years in the preparation for certification, history has shown that the industry has benefited from their efforts. A better knowledge of the safety acts by the managers has produced safer operations, and a higher standard of management has raised the technical standards of mining operations to a stage where Australia can be proud.

Quantification of site-specific sulfide oxidation rates is crucial to accuracy of prediction of, for example, the environmental impact of a mine site. Sulfide oxidation reactions are reportedly increased by bacterial mediation; determination of abiotic and biotic weathering rates thus requires the establishment of sterile control samples. However, sterilisation often involves exposure of samples to extreme conditions that may alter the physical, chemical, or mineralogical characteristics of the tailings and hence affect element release rates. The impact of various sterilisation techniques, common and novel, on the element release rates from tailings from the Kristineberg site, northern Sweden, has been investigated. Batch weathering experiments indicated that the different methods of sterilisation (autoclaving, heat treatment, ethanol/heat treatment, application of antibiotics, rinsing with distilled water, and γ-radiation) did not greatly affect long-term element release rates. Long-term experiments (>30 days) are thus to be recommended for establishment of weathering rates. Sterilised and untreated control samples showed similar element release rates after ~100 days of experiments; possible explanations include that microbial oxidation is not important under our experimental conditions (Po2 = 0.2 atm, pH ~2.3, 22¦C, 0.01 M HNO3, no additional nutrients).

Mount Isa Mines Limited commissioned the Heavy Medium Plant in August 1982. The first processing stage using Mogensen Sizer 2056 dry screens, experienced unresolvable cloth blinding problems in attempting to separate fine, damp Lead/Zinc ore at 1.7 mm. A large proportion of the fines incorrectly reported to oversize and hence to the wet preparation screens. This wet preparation screen overloading produced multiple operating and maintenance problems. The plant configuration precluded retrofitting any alternative proprietary screen. An internal Mount Isa Mines research and development programme was established to design and build a screen to achieve the required per- formance within the site constraints. The resulting ISA SIZER screen has exceeded metallurgical performance expectations. A `clean sheet' approach to the design also permitted elimination of maintenance difficulties experienced with the Mogensen Sizer. Four `production model' ISA SIZERS were installed in February 1988. The ISA SIZER screen, now fully developed is available commercially and will satisfy many screening plant requirements.

Proper technical appraisal of a coal deposit and the determination of optimum open- pit mine design can only be made after detailed examination of a number of interrelated geographical and geological factors. Initial evaluation of the geography and the overall attitude of the coal measures can often determine the most likely coal mining technique. Conclusions reached in the early stage of the investigations frequently dictate the quality and quantity of particular types of data required from further drilling of the deposit. In many cases, insufficient information relating to the overall engineering aspects of a coal deposit is derived from drilling. Little or no attention is paid in the exploratory phase to such things as the specific gravity of selected overburden samples, floor conditions, clay content of the overburden and selected strength tests on cores. This is a direct result of geologists treating coal deposits purely in geological terms without sufficient consideration being given to the engineering parameters required for a proper evaluation of the deposit.

Zinc and lead sulphide flotation con centrates containing from 0.02 to 0.20% Cd are roasted on an updraught sinter machine at the Cockle Creek Works of Sulphide Corp- oration Pty. Limited to provide sinter for simultaneous smelting of zinc and lead in an Imperial Smelting Furnace (I.S.F.). The major portion (about 85%) of cad- mium in concentrate feed to the Sinter Plant is eliminated with sinter fume and is rec- overed by weak acid leaching in the Cadmium Plant'followed by counter-current decantat- ion, ion exchange concentration, precipitat- ion of cadmium sponge and partial refining to caustic refined cadmium metal. Cadmium not eliminated during sintering is volatilised in the I.S.F. and subsequently recovered as zinc alloy by distillation in the zinc ref- ining columns of the Zinc Refluxer. The partially refined cadmium metal and cadmium- zinc alloy are blended as feed to the cadm- ium refining column where separation and recovery of cadmium is effected. Condensate from the column is further refined under caustic soda flux and cast into anode shapes. Production is 200 t.p.a. at 85% recovery of cadmium in concentrates. ABSTRACT' Mainland Papua New Guinea is formed of a microcontinental / island arc system (?Eocene - latest Oligocene Sepic arc) which in Middle to Late Miocene times was obducted over the northward- moving Australian plate. The sedimentary and volcanic units of this system form part of the Wogamush Group (Aure beds, Mena beds, Omaura Formation, Movi beds, Wogamush beds, Wogamush Formation. Nansananka Conglomerate and other correlates in- eluding cale-alkaline volcanics and carbonate beds). This Sepic event was followed in Pliocene-Present times by the obduction of the Finisterre-Adelbert-Oenake fore-arc or possibly oceanic plateau. The Green Parrot and Reward stratabound silver-lead (copper-zinc) deposits are located in the eastern part of the Arunta Block. At Green Parrot, mineralisation is contained within a north-south striking lode horizon comprised of elongate lenses of massive garnet or calcsilicate-carbonate "lode rocks" with intercalated sericite-biotite schist and laminated biotite-feldspar schist. The "lode rocks" are increasingly calcareous to the west. The mineralisation is broadly zoned with an increase in lead content and decreases in copper and silver contents from east to west. The principal sulphide minerals are galena, sphalerite and bornite. The Reward deposit lies adjacent to a lens of massive garnet "lode rock" which is contained within garnetiferous sericite-quartz schist. Primary mineralisation consists of galena, chalcopyrite, sphalerite and pyrite. Both deposits are associated with a substantial thickening of the lode horizon which is narrow and discontinuous along strike from the Green Parrot and Reward deposits.

The general structure of microprocessors and their method of use is described, and de- tails given of their application in two parti- cular examples of instrumentation for mineral concentrators. One is in a pulp density gauge, and using this example, the way in which a microprocessor-based unit can be made to be self-calibrating is described. The other is in an on-stream analysis detector for uranium in solvent, where a microprocessor is used to re- place a mini-computer.

The Hodgkinson Province numerical modelling project aims to develop an improved understanding of the physical conditions that lead to the localisation of goldbearing fluids within known systems and apply this understanding to the prediction of potential new sites of gold mineralisation. The project follows a series of stages from identifying the key parameters required to construct and test simulations through to reverse engineering of known deposits and ultimately applying the conditions identified in the preliminary stages to predictive simulations. Results of the modelling demonstrate strong geometric controls of the localisation of fluids during mineralisation. An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. An experienced and reliable knowledge of fire fighting procedures is necessary for mine emergency situations. Since experts in this area are scarce the technology of expert systems lends itself as a suitable component in the decision making process. This paper describes an expert system that is being developed for this purpose. The expert system. RESCUE. is a knowledge-based computer programme which incorporates the judgement, experience, rules of thumb. mine environmental conditions as well as human intuitions in the mine rescue operation. RESCUE makes decisions such as whether or not the affected area should be sealed.' whether or not rescuemen should be withdrawn, and which fire fighting agent is most appropriate for the situation. The IF..... THEN rules written in the VP-EXPERT shell contains antecedents and conclusions based on environmental as well as other conditions prevailing in the mine. For example, the CO/Oz deficiency ratio indicates the progress of heating; explosibility trends are given by varying flammable gases C CH4,H2,CO) in relation to oxygen concentration, and barometric pressure falls may affect explosibility by increasing CH4 content in workings. The interaction of such numeric-based rules with others rules reflecting the experience and judgement of the experts assist the system to arrive at its conclusions and subsequent course of action.

For decades strip mining with discon tinuously operating 'draglines and shovels has been the most economical operation method in the shallow hard coal opencast mines of Aust- ralia, North-America and some other countries. Continuously operating equipment such as bucket chain excavators and bucket wheel excavators in combination with conveyor belt systems, conveyor bridges and stackers had been deve- loped in Germany; during the last 25 years this type of equipment has been further developed in order to allow a high degree of rationaliza= tion as to opencast mines in unconsolidated overburden in Germany, in many European couh- tries, in India and in Victoria. The differing compactness of the layers to be mined, the increasing mining depth, the adverse over- burden to coal ratio and geotechnical con- ditions account for the combined use of con- tinuously and discontinuously operating equip- ment and systems. When Australian voters elected a Labor Government in March 1983 the value of the Jabiluka uranium deposit as an asset of Pancontinental Mining Limited effectively evaporated overnight. The day before the election, Jabiluka was Pancon's principal asset, with the Company's 65% stake in the deposit having a market value of the order of $US1 billion. This value had been set by an agreement reached with a potential customer, who was prepared to pay $US150 million for 10% of Jabiluka. The months before the election had been the culmination of ten years of unremitting effort to bring what was then the world's largest reserve of high'grade uranium ore into production. These efforts had included two and a half years of negotiations with the local aborigines, as well as exhaustive environmental studies and conceptual mine planning. All domestic approvals required to develop the Jabiluka deposit had been given to Pancontinental and marketing efforts had successfully placed about 50% of the expected uranium production with overseas utilities. It appeared that Jabiluka was about to emerge as one of the world's great mining enterprises. The election of a government with an anti-uranium policy stopped Jabiluka dead in its tracks. Pancontinental's largest asset had effectively become worthless and the Company appeared to be facing a bleak future.

In six deep hard coal mines situated in the coal district of the Saar and Lorraine, Saarbergwerke AG produce annually 9 to 10 million tons of coal. The coal is either coked or fired in power plants. Comprehensive planning work is done for the producing coal faces, 15 stone drifts and 60 seam headings. The computer can assist in drawing up the short- and medium-term planning by taking over, on the one hand, work done so far by hand and by supplying, on the other, additional information. The computer can draw up time schedules, can do quantitative calculations, can draw up plans for the em- ployment of manpower, machines and other equipment, and can calculate cost and earnings. It is ensured that all part plans are always adjusted to each other. Because of the volume of work involved, planning in this form and extent becomes possible only by the computer. Especially with the periodical continuation of planning, the new system facilitates the work to be done. The ideas of the planning engineer are and remain the basis of all planning work and the computer gives him an aid to assist him with calculations, report writing and feasibility studies.

Electrochemical polarisation techniques can be successively applied to maintain clean surfaces in process environments. The applications are the result of extensive knowledge of the electrochemical nature of process environments, an innovative approach to problem solving and shared æcan doÆ attitudes between the supplier and process owner. Initial identification of suitable applications is based on over 20 years of process and electrochemical experience. The technologies discussed in this paper include Electrochemical Anti-Scaling [EAS], Electrochemical Protection Systems with both anodic [EPSA] and cathodic [EPSC] protection and Electrochemical Flocculation [EF]. Examples of industrial applications are reviewed. Good examples of metallurgical processes which can benefit greatly from an advanced electrochemical treatment are the wet processes involving precipitation, crystallisation and evaporation. Eliminating corrosion and scaling which would otherwise cause process disruptions and quality problems can make a big difference in process profitability. Clear advantages in both cost efficiency and environment friendliness are easily demonstrated. Continuous processing with minimum downtime is one clear advantage. In comparison to the use of corrosion inhibitors, anti-scaling agents and flocculants, the electrochemical polarisation does not increase the environmental load from the process as no additives of any kind are used. In most cases the cost benefits from pro-actively keeping surfaces clean with the help of advanced electrochemistry are substantial when compared to traditional re-active methods and other active treatments.
