The Bastnäs-type magnetite-skarn-hosted rare earth element (REE) mineralisations are located in the Palaeoproterozoic Bergslagen ore province, central Sweden, and occur along a ca 100 km long belt of 1.90–1.87 Ga metavolcanosedimentary rocks. Ten different Bastnäs-type deposits have been sampled in order to assess the origin of ore-forming fluids in these systems. Magnetite and quartz have d18O values ranging from -2.3 to +1.1‰ and +7.2 to +8.3‰ respectively. Mineralised carbonates have d18O values between +5.8 and +7.2‰ and d13C values between -5.4 and -3.3‰. Temperature calculations based on the O-isotope composition of mineral pairs, combined with available fluid inclusion data, suggest primary mineralisation at ca 650–400°C. For these temperatures, calculated equilibrium fluids have d18O values that range from those typical of magmatic fluids (+6 to +8‰) to lower values (down to +3‰). Variation in carbonate O and C isotope data are consistent with interaction between local Palaeoproterozoic carbonate rocks (d18O = +12.5 to +19.6‰ and d13C = -1.8 to +1.7‰) and fluids of a magmatic origin. It is suggested that the Bastnäs-type REE-magnetite mineralisations formed as a result of reactions between local carbonate units and high-temperature, magmatic-dominated hydrothermal fluids during 1.90–1.87 Ga (Svecofennian) syn-volcanic activity.CITATION:Sahlström, F, Jonsson, E, Högdahl, K, Harris, C, Troll, V R and Jolis, E M, 2015. A testwork program aimed to improve the assaying of underground face samples established that for an Accelerated Cyanidation Extraction using the LeachWELLTM 60X catalyst, followed by an Aqua Regia finish (to quantify non-cyanide-extractable gold): ò Assay results (including the aqua regia finish) from a full set of samples from one underground face can be returned within four hours. ò The reagent dose to make the method simple and 'bullet-proof' is 8 gm LeachWELLTM 60X and 20 gm NaCN per 200 gm sample (30 per cent solids). Pulverising is to 90 per cent passing 75 micron (compared to the standard of 90 per cent passing 150 micron), and cyanidation is completed within one hour - however both might be further optimised. ò The LeachWELLTM/Aqua Regia results demonstrate that Fire Assays suffer from a significant nugget effect which makes the Fire Assay data relatively unreliable. ò Original costs, specific to Bannockburn (viz including an Aqua Regia finish), handling approximately 20 000 to 25 000 per annum is estimated to be $5.40, ie about one-third less than fire assaying. Optimising is further reducing these costs. It is estimated that the LeachWELLT"'/Aqua Regia assay procedure has reduced the probable error limits of any given assay of this ore from the range 0.74x to 1.36x for Fire Assay, to an appreciably smaller range of 0.90x to 1.11x. Thus for a cut-off grade of 1.60 g Au/t, samples with Fire Assays ranging up to 2.18 g Au/t have 25 per cent chance of being below cut-off, while samples with Fire Assays as low as 1.18 g Au/t have an equal chance of actually exceeding cut-off grade. This 1 g Au/t range in uncertainty is generally unacceptable for many practicalgrade/tonnage relationships. By contrast, using LeachWELLTM + Aqua Regia assays, the estimated corresponding limits are 1.44 g Au/t and 1.78 g Auk respectively - a far more tolerable 0.34 g Au/t range of uncertainty. Subsequent data has demonstrated that sufficient accuracy for grade control is achieved by Accelerated Cyanidation alone, further halving the cost of assays.

This paper aims to highlight the global exploration opportunities that exist in connection with Ural-Alaskan (UA)-type intrusions. The key economic importance of UA intrusions is the existence of metallic platinum (mainly iron-platinum alloys) associated generally with chromite mineralisation and located within a dunite core, especially its coarse-grained part. Being very dense and resistant to erosion, platinum can form rich placers as the intrusion erodes. Big multimillion ounce placer platinum deposits of this type have historically been successfully mined for many years (eg Russia, Colombia and Alaska).However, large-scale exploration and mining of platinum placers currently occurs only in the Russian Far East. Outside of Russia, there is now little or no understanding of this type of deposit and its economic importance. Using successful operations in Russia as examples, it is demonstrated that there are many opportunities for similar discoveries all around the world, especially around the Pacific Rim, where such intrusions tend to be concentrated. Examples of highly prospective areas in eastern Australia and New Zealand are given. There is also excellent potential in British Columbia (BC) Canada, South-East Asia (Philippines, Indonesia, Papua New Guinea and New Caledonia) and South America (Colombia and Ecuador).CITATION:Nazimova, Y and Ryan, G, 2015. The Mount Kasi gold deposit in Vanua Levu represents an epithermal, high sulphur, gold-enargite system occurring within a volcanic caldera of Middle to Upper Miocene age. High level breccia pipes flare upward and form flat lying, near surface, mushroom shaped sheets parallel and near to the present land surface. The upper portions of the pipes contain explosion breccias which are capped by sandy siliceous sinter-like beds and are cut by alunite veins. Outlying intercalated scoriasceous lavas and breccia sheets show evidence of subsidence within a shallow basin. Detailed mapping of breccia types, intensity of silicification and the presence of multiple quartz veining and enargite abundance outlined blocks of more consistent gold mineralization within the breccias. This work has provided a model for mineralization which will aid future exploration and ore reserve estimations. A significant eluvial concentration of gold occurs in soils overlying the breccia sheet.

Microbial desulfurisation of coal has significant advantages over physicochemical desulfurisation processes since the former process selectively removes the inorganic sulfur compounds and heavy metals without significant carbon loss. The purpose of this study was to improve the desulfurisation yield of a coal sample from northeastern coalfields, Assam, India using microbial technique. The coal sample contained 2.13 per cent of total sulfur and 2.59 per cent of ash. Stirred tank reactors of 40 L capacity were operated in batch mode. Initially, the reactor was fed with 40 L of slurry containing ten per cent (w/v) coal, ten per cent (v/v) inoculum of mixed culture of mesophilic acidophiles, native to coal itself and the requisite amounts of constituents for 9K medium without added ferrous sulfate. The percolate of the reactor was then used to seed the medium for the next experiment. The purpose was to obtain a better adapted and more active biomass which would give a better desulfurisation yield for coal. Further studies were conducted in the bioreactor, fed with 40 L of slurry containing ten per cent (w/v) pulp density of coal, ten per cent inoculum (derived from previous studies) and the medium, supplemented with ferrous sulfate. Results showed an increased total desulfurisation yield of 43 per cent in the latter treatment in comparison to the previous one, where the desulfurisation yield was only 23 per cent. The findings also demonstrated the convenience of using inocula derived from coal, where 50 - 60 per cent of pyritic sulfur was removed, while chemical desulfurisation is of little significance with the majority of coal types. The ash content was also reduced to 1.74 per cent as the low pH of the process caused dissolution of a number of common minerals present in the coal.

An experienced drill operator is able to make a log of a drill hole defining physical properties of the earth such as hardness or structure as they vary with depth. This log is based on intuition or how the drill æfeelsÆ. Rock characterisation using measure while drilling (MWD) parameters aims at refining this intuition into a package that accurately defines the properties of the subsurface as the drill bit propagates. Subsurface investigation using MWD parameters aims to combine physical drill parameters: Pull down force, rotary speed, penetration rate, torque and vibration in such a way to yield real time rock properties. MWD is investigation in its most primitive form, put simply MWD is merely a physical probe æfeelingÆ what the rock mass is at depth.

This paper discusses cone penetration test correlations for loose gold tailings that were developed within a critical state soil mechanics framework. The development of a new calibration chamber for cone penetration testing that consists of a modified triaxial cell is described. Some of the early development and commissioning issues that were encountered, as well as the solutions adopted are outlined, including the system to prepare the samples and to acquire high-quality data from the testing. Also, the triaxial laboratory testing required to achieve the critical state line is described, including some of the basic precautions considered necessary as good practice. Additionally, the system adopted for volume tracking of the calibration chamber sample is described, which is essential for ensuring a reliable state parameter comparison against the acquired cone penetration test data. Finally, some laboratory test data from the calibration chamber is plotted against the soil behaviour type charts currently available from various authors.

Desktop X-ray powder diffraction using a D2 PHASER equipped with fast linear detector was performed on several iron ore and mill scale samples. Data were analysed using cluster analysis and Rietveld quantitative phase analysis. The quantitative mineralogy of both materials could be established. Thus the input is provided for understanding the energy consumption and the CO2 emission during iron production. Furthermore, tabletop XRD allows to distinguish iron ore from mill scales and to quantify their mixtures.

In the iron and steel manufacturing industries, efforts are being made to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050, and the transition from a coal-based steelmaking process to that utilising renewable energy is being pursued. An alternative process in which directly hydrogen-reduced iron is melted in an electric furnace is being investigated. It is known that foaming slag reduces heat loss from the steel bath in electric arc furnace, but iron loss due to the suspension of steel particles in the slag is indispensable. To improve the separation of steel particles from the slag, the control of the slag viscosity is important. Although the slag viscosity has been extensively studied, in those studies the slag was considered to be a simple liquid. However, in actual operations, slag is a multiphase fluid consisting of solid, gas and liquid phases. Therefore, in this study, by measuring the sedimentation velocity of titanium, stainless steel and glass spheres in an aqueous glycerin solution containing bubbles generated by the reaction between NaHCO3 and C2H2O4, the apparent viscosity of the gas-liquid fluid was evaluated based on Stoke’s law. It was found that the apparent viscosity of the gas-liquid fluid is larger than the viscosity of liquid phase and depends on both the bubble volume ratio in solution and the density of the falling solid sphere, and the apparent viscosity was different from that previously obtained by the rotation method. The apparent viscosity derived from the sedimentation velocity of solid spheres changed depending on the specific gravity of the ball. This is because the apparent viscosity is derived from the velocity of a ball falling in a static bubble in this method, whereas that is derived from the force applied by a stationary flow in the rotational method.

A mathematical model for spontaneous combustion of coal with moisture included is presented in this paper. The one-dimensional unsteady state model consists of conservation equations for oxygen, water vapour and inherent moisture of coal and energy for both gaseous and solid phases. A first order Arrhenius reaction rate for oxidation under both pore diffusion and chemically controlled reaction regime is considered. The rate of evaporation or condensation is also considered as a function of temperature of coal, water content of coal and gas streams. The equation of the model is solved numerically by the finite difference technique. Influences of different parameters on the process of spontaneous combustion can be examined by using this model. Also the model can be used to simulate full-scale storage conditions.

The ever increasing number of vehicles is leading to slow-moving and even stationary traffic sitting longer in traffic jams over extensive city areas. This traffic situation causes a sharp increase in pollutant emissions from vehicles, and high levels of pollution usually result throughout the built-up area. Reducing the pollution level by using traffic routing measures to speed up the flow of traffic in the existing street network is only possible in exceptional cases.In many cases the only option for achieving a significant improvement in traffic conditions is to shift the traffic underground using a road tunnel or underpass. Such tunnel routes suck off the traffic from large sections of the city, thereby easing the overall traffic flow. Thus on the one hand it produces a sharp reduction in pollution levels in the area of the tunnel route, but on the other hand it can result in locally increased exhaust pollution levels from longer tunnel systems that require mechanical ventilation. The air extracted by the ventilation system is blown out into the atmosphere either directly through the tunnel portal, or via a venting tower. Pollution can therefore occur in the area surrounding such exhaust air outlets.Thus if a tunnel is planned in a city, then closer investigation is required of both aspects: the reduction in pollution in the area of the tunnel route thanks to relocating the traffic and easing congestion, and the increased short-range pollution around the tunnel portals (shafts).

Properties of the soil profile fundamentally control water-limited ecosystems. Soil water availability affects vegetation dynamics of plant communities, but is also affected by these communities in return. Understanding this eco-hydrological interplay and the role of physical soil restoration is crucial for successful rehabilitation and management of post-mining landscapes in semi-arid areas. However, uncertainties exist in both the mathematical description of plant communities within ecological submodels and the predictability of future rainfall events. This study uses information gap decision theory combined with an ecohydrological system model to investigate how both uncertainties impact decision-making in the context of ecosystem rehabilitation. A range of management strategies are investigated to identify the optimal soil thickness for successful rehabilitation of native plant communities in Central Queensland. The results emphasise that thicker soils can counterbalance uncertainty in mathematical description of plant communities by increasing the simulated survival probability of plant communities. However, the influence of thicker soils on the robustness of plant communities against a change in future rainfall amount is rather marginal. By allocating an economic value for restoring a particular thickness of soil layer, these results can be used to evaluate the costs of ecosystem re-establishment with regard to two target measures - the survival probability of the plant community and their robustness against climate change.CITATION:Arnold, S, 2012. Swirl Flow Technology (SFT), a novel approach for agitation in large industrial slurry tanks, was jointly developed and patented by CSIRO and Queensland Alumina Ltd (QAL). Currently, SFT is used in 16 alumina precipitation tanks at QAL, with the first installation in January 1997. This paper provides insight to the underlying fluid dynamics, which were investigated through pilot-scale experiments. A key finding was that SFT produces tank wall velocities approximately four times that of conventional draft tube agitator systems for the same power input, whilst for solids suspension, much less power is needed. SFT is energy efficient and practical in scaling suppression as demonstrated by the full-scale experience at QAL.

The key element in the carbon-in-pulp process for gold processing is the loading of dissolved Au(CN)2 from solution onto activated carbon. The mechanism and kinetics of this step have been examined by solution adsorption-desorption and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy for both coconut derived activated carbon and peat-based activated carbon. The results show that these carbon types have the same mechanism and kinetics of adsorption. There is no contribution to the bonding from carbon-oxygen functionalities on the carbon surface, as has been invariably supposed in all previous theories for the mechanism of the reaction. It is shown that Au(CN)Z is reversibly adsorbed intact on and parallel to the graphitic planes of the carbon with the formation of a weak carbon-gold n-donor bond. The kinetic measurement of carbon gold loading reactivity is discussed and use of the Murdoch equation for this test is critically assessed.

The expansive, open cut iron-ore mines in Western Australia typically experience few days of rain per annum, often amounting to less than 250 mm. Unlike mines where rainfall is frequent, they may be less prepared for extreme rainfall events. Such events can cause erosion, flooding and sedimentation, drainage alteration, spoil and stock heaps wetting and effect slope stability. Such impacts may threaten personnel safety, infrastructure, and production. The CRATER (‘Climate Related Adaptation from Terrain Evaluation Results’) framework collates and interprets a mine’s pre-existing data and semi-quantitative information to assess vulnerability to, and ultimately plan to avoid or minimise, flood-related hazard to infrastructure, people, downtime, environment and revenue. Outputs assist decision makers to design investment strategies for minimising mining operations’ vulnerability to climate. Previously developed for smaller, wetter mines in Queensland’s coal region, the outputs provide a hot-spot map, fault tree analysis and an assessment of the mine’s capacity to adapt. The multicriteria evaluation (MCE) within a geographic information system (GIS), equally suits iron-ore mines’ siteconditions (elevation, slope, drainage, soil and vegetation) to identify critical inundation areas. Hotspot results provide target zones for in-depth fault-tree analysis that, in turn, present a range of sitespecific adaptation options. Rainfall-intensity and the number of rain days since the 1970s have increased over central and eastern parts of the Pilbara Region. While tropical cyclones may become less frequent, they are projected to increase in intensity. Although some parts of the Hamersley Ranges receive more than 500 mm per annum, rainfall in the Pilbara is generally very low. Therefore, experience of the impacts of extreme rainfall events in the constantly changing topography of Western Australia’s iron ore region may be sparse. Minimising potential effects can be proactively assisted using CRATER.

A clay-capping trial was established in 1996 on Magazine Dump at the Mt Lyell Copper Mine. The trial was initially constructed under the Mount Lyell Remediation Research and Demonstration Program, a co-operative venture between the State and Federal governments. The detailed engineering design for the clay cover included the following features; reshaping and compaction of dump batters, 5 m vertical bench interval, overall side-slopes of 2.5:1, emplacement of clay in four 150 mm lifts, compaction by a 10 t vibrating roller or ætrack rollingÆ on batters with density testing for quality control. A small section at the base of the dump ( The trial also generated certain unexpected findings. Field permeability tests on the cover yielded uncertain results and oxygen remains available throughout the dump. The flow data indicate that, while total outflow has decreased as a result of storm shedding, inputs from groundwater and batter infiltration are still significant. Outflow during the driest weeks of the year may have risen following capping. Detailed assessment of the data is hampered by insufficient pre-capping information; however, there is a possibility that conductivity flux emitted when flows in the receiving environment are at their annual minimum is unchanged or worse post-capping.

Failings di,posal presents many challenges at metal mines in Peru where the extreme relief yields very little useable land area. These challenges are amplified by other hazards such as the high seismic environment, high rainfall, and frequent debris torrents down the steep hillsides. As a result many mining operations have resorted to in-river disposal of mill tailings. This paper presents a case history of one underground metal mine located in the high Andes mountains of Peru where in-river disposal of tailings has been used for some 30 years. The paper outlines a comprehensive engineering study that was aimed at increasing the utilisation of tailings disposal underground. The scope of this study included modifications to the grinding and flotation circuits to produce a high sulphide and low sulphide tailings for underground and surface disposal respectively: mapping and cataloguing of abandoned stopes for hackfilling: modifications to the existing backfill system to improve icliahility and throughput, and a preliminary evaluation of alternatives Such as silicated and paste fills.

Gold dissolution by cyanide requires the presence of oxygen which is usually supplied by sparging compressed air into the gold containing slurry. For those ores that contain certain obnoxious substances that consume oxygen, maintaining the required minimum level of dissolved oxygen can be troublesome. One of the most economical solutions to the problem of low dissolved oxygen, especially in plants that have air compressors installed, is to enhance the rate of oxygen mass transfer. The oxygen mass transfer rate was measured in a two phase system using two different sparger arrangements, and with addition of a frother that is known to reduce the bubble size produced by the sparger. The common sparger system was shown to be inefficient compared with a readily available but under utilised method of gas dispersion which introduces air directly below the reactor turbine. Transfer of this technology to an operating plant confirmed the beneficial effect of the improved sparger system. The addition of the frother did decrease the bubble size, but it also reduced the oxygen mass transfer rate.

As a result of cheap Maui gas and plentiful hydro-electricity, over the past few decades New Zealand has enjoyed some of the cheapest energy of any OECD country. The situation is changing; at best we are facing some radical changes in energy use, at worst we are facing a crisis resulting from the following:   Cause 1: Maui gas will be exhausted by 2012. Distorted pricing and supply contracts; resulted in Huntly Power Station, a coal mine mouth generator running on 70 per cent Maui gas until very recently!   Cause 2: Investment in new generating capacity (and transmission) is woefully inadequate; as a result hydro lake levels are being continually pushed to the limits.   Cause 3: Distorted thinking is everywhere, for example; æWe will find more cheap gasÆ. æGas is clean û coal is dirtyÆ. Hot air  û ægreen alternatives such as wind generation will save usÆ. æNo NuclearÆ. The outcomes of the distorted thinking will be price increases, then shortages (there is nothing like "black-outs" to focus national thinking) and finally recession.   But what can NZ do? - Mine Coal. Coal jump-started the industrial revolution, it can provide the transition to post-gas and oil. NZ has the second highest reserves of coal per capita in the world, yet we use less that any other country with significant coal reserves. Our exports of our best coal have increased threefold, yet out own consumption has remained static at about 1-1.5 Mtpa for the last 30 years. Our coal is NZ owned and inexpensive relative to other energy sources, even allowing for infrastructure and environmental costs.   What can we do? We as mining professionals can promote informed responsible development and investment in the country's mining and energy business. We can galvanise public opinion on issues such as æunbundlingÆ our entire energy chain from mine-to generator-through transmission, even if the nuclear issue has to wait! With oil above US$70/bbl substitution is feasible. For individuals, there is always solar!

The role of flotation columns in comparison with conventional mechanical flotation cells is discussed under the scenario of Brazilian flotation technology. All iron ore concentrator circuits commissioned since 1990 incorporated column only flotation technology in rougher, cleaner, scavenger configuration. Columns were also added to existing circuits, especially at the cleaner stage. Columns were also incorporated to phosphate ore flotation circuits operating mechanical cells. In two phosphate concentrators, columns substituted for all mechanical cells. Columns perform the cleaning stage in a large sulfide copper concentrator, following rougher flotation in tank cells. Scavenger of the cleaner tailings is performed in tank cells at this plant. Other ores that are concentrated in flotation columns include graphite, talc, lead-zinc sulfide, and a zinc hydrometallurgical residue for silver recovery.
