South Crofty's ventilation network is large and complex. Of the total exhaust air quantity 40% enters the mine by leakage routes through old workings, this air carries high concentrations of radon gas and results in the mine becoming a classified work place under the Ionising Radiation Regulations 1985. Improvements in the control of the ventilating air and dilution by increased air quantity have reduced the average contamination to aelow-0.2 WL. The major part of the radon originates from ground water inflows and from concentrations of radium within the mine with direct emanation from rock surfaces being negligible. Of 600 kBgs-1 total radon leaving the mine 93% cannot be accounted for from known and accessible sources.

Risk assessment in the mining industry is currently a topic of great interest with risk methodologies being increasingly applied beyond the traditional areas of finance and feasibility to analyses of risks due to various physical hazards including chemical, electrical, mechanical and geotechnical sources. The application of risk analysis and evaluation techniques to the management of personnel safety is being promoted by both industry and regulators but, particularly for geotechnical hazards, often there are inadequate databases for a meaningful quantitative calculation of risk. In Western Australia over the decade 1987 - 1997, the annual fatality rate for underground mining has averaged at approximately 1.3 in 1000 employees with rockfalls/rockbursts accounting for over half of these deaths (Prevention of Mining Fatalities Taskforce, 1997). Recent improvements have been made since this time, perhaps halving the annual fatality rate, mainly due to industry improving ground control measures and implementing various recommendations from the Prevention of Mining Fatalities Taskforce (1997). However there still remain a large number of unknowns when trying to address the complex area of geotechnical risk in mining. Risk calculations require information about the source of the hazard, the people or assets exposed to the hazard (the æelements at riskÆ) and the effects on these vulnerable elements if the hazard actually occurs (the potential consequences). To date, little information has been available on the exposure of mining personnel and equipment to underground hazards other than occupational safety studies on chemicals, heat, dust, etc. This paper concentrates on underground geotechnical risks and presents a data collection and rating system for the exposure of both the underground workforce and equipment to rockfalls and rockbursts. The methodology considers exposure times, personnel protection levels and hazard proximities to give exposure ratings for the major underground mining activities and hence rate different locations within a mine. This exposure methodology is then applied to the workforce and production/ development cycles in an actual WA underground mine, creating a snapshot map of differing levels of personnel exposure across the mine.

Research into the control of diesel particulates (DP) has been. conducted by BHP Coal for more than 7 years. Personal monitoring of employee exposures (n = 480 full shift samples) conducted at nine underground coal mines has indicated that the exposure of the workforce ranges from less than 0.1 to 2.2 mg/m3 of DP dependent on job type and mining operation. Approximately 50% of the mass of DP captured is elemental carbon (EC) which is the species currently being considered by some international regulatory authorities as the exposure standard. Five technologies for controlling DP were investigated in a combination of studies conducted in an above ground simulated tunnel, in a special controlled section of underground mine roadway and validated by application in standard coal mining operations at Tower Colliery. Tests conducted under controlled conditions indicate that dependent on the type of fuel in use, the introduction of low sulphur fuels can reduce DP levels in return airways by up to 50% and in actual mining situations a reduction of 20% can be achieved in exposure of the workforce. In addition, subjective responses from the workforce indicate that exhaust emissions from low sulphur fuels provide lower irritation and a more pleasant aroma. The use of water filled scrubber tanks reduces the level of DP emissions by 25%. Chemical decoking of engines resulted in a reduction of 20% in DP in return airways. A commercially available non-flammable disposable dry exhaust filter constructed from synthetic organic fibres with an operational lifetime in excess of 20 hours was found to reduce DP exhaust emissions by 80%. Investigations have indicated that the use of increased ventilation to control DP levels particularly in multiple vehicle situations does not follow a simple dilution factor and in some instances compliance with current regulatory requirements may not produce the required reduced exposure levels. The results from single component control strategies provide considerable reduction in exposure to DP, however the most efficient and cost effective control methodology is the use of a combination of individual systems modelled to operations conducted at each mine.

Gross at the First Ordinary Meeting of the Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, August 18th, 1952.Mr. President, Ladies and Gentlemen:Confronted with the task of reviewing the progress of Mount Isa Mines Limited, since the inception of the Company 28 years ago, I soon found that effective coverage was a task beyohd me, if I were to confine the address within the limits of time allowable. Faced with the alternative, a summary, that could only fail to -do justice to the subject, I turned elsewherl? for inspiration and found it in Chester Wilmot's book "The Struggle for Europe". Those of you who have read this masterly contribution to the literature of World War II will recall that he takes us, most dramatically, behind the scenes and we learn of the thoughts and ideas that were uppermost in the minds of both allied and enemy leaders at times when decision's that profoundly influenced the course of the war were taken. I felt I could safely follow this rather novel approach to my own problem. Strengthened by the realisation that the technical achievements of the Company have largely been covered over the years, and that the results of our labours are mainly here before you, I have attempted to liven up my modest canvas by going behind the scenes, and have sought to deal with ideas and the reasons for important decisions, rather. than to embark upon a purely descriptive essay.If then, you will bear with me, we shall skip back through the years to the days of struggle that our President's address has so aptly covered, and find that one man's ideas and faith stand out beyond all others. W. H. Corbould must always be credited with having founded the enterprise, for he correctly appraised the potential of the struggling prospect and foresaw what could be done, despite the handicaps of geography, climate and need for heavy expenditure.

Structural, mineralogical, and textural data from the Tarnagulla Goldfield demonstrate that the area has undergone three significant phases of deformation. The first phase of deformation (Dl) predates the intrusion of the Tarnagulla pluton, which has been dated using K/Ar as 391 ¦ 5MY. We regard this pre-granite deformational event as the major regional deformation. Gold-bearing quartz veins have been deposited in dilational sites on west-dipping reverse faults. These sites demonstrate a geometry related both to faulting associated with Dl and the plunge of the Fl fold axes. This evidence, together with chronology of unmineralised ? D2 and D3 faults, the absence of quartz veining associated with D3 events, and the deformation of carbonate-quartz-biotite-sulphide aggregates within Sl by later S2, lead us to conclude that the bulk of the mineralisation was essentially syn- or late Dl. S'80 values for fluids in equilibrium with vein quartz from Central Victoria have indicated equivocal support for either a magmatic or metamorphic origin. Our evidence supports a pre-magmatic origin for mineralisation at Tarnagulla and hence tends to favour a metamorphic fluid source.

The past decade has seen a great increase in activity in deep seismic reflection profiling of the continental crust. Some 20 countries have conducted field experiments and the total length of deep seismic profiles surveyed to date is approximately 25,000 km. This total is very large compared to the quantity of such data that existed previously, but very small compared to the total length of seis- mic profiles of the shallow crust carried out for petroleum exploration, which some- times has exceeded 600,000 km on land in one year alone and 1,600,000 km/yr on land and sea. Furthermore, 25,000 km of seismic pro- filing corresponds to exploration of only a tiny fraction of the total volume of the entire continental crust. Thus at this stage of development of the subject, one must be wary of generalizations that are based on these limited data and then ex- tended in scope to include the crust everywhere. The state of the subject is such that virtually every new seismic line reveals totally unexpected seismic fea- tures, a sign that the subject is in its major discovery phase and a warning to the generalizers. Nevertheless, in addition to much new information on deep crustal structure in specific locations, some broad consequences of application of this powerful geophysical technique to a region of the earth not pre- viously explored in this manner are be- coming clear. One is that, as seismic data on the deep continental crust become more abundant and more revealing of complexi- ties, the deep crust can be far better re- lated to rocks at the surface. Conse- quently, the geological style of reason- ing is now being extended from its normal domain of the near-surface to include the deepest crust in a comprehensive story of the evolution of the continents. This change is a subtle but important one and is evident, for example, in some cross sec- tions of the North American Transect Pro- gram, which show surface geology extended in a consistent, though speculative, manner to the top of the mantle. Microorganisms have been used throughout history for the benefit of mankind with some of the earliest applications being in the production of fermented foods and beverages. Reactions involving inorganic substances such as metals, sulphur and sulphide compounds were hardly ever used until the early 1900s when it was discovered that Thiobacillus ferrooxidans was capable of promoting the oxidation of metal sulphides in ores. Today, it is widely recognised that biotechnology has great potential in the minerals industries, particularly in such areas as the leaching of low-grade ores of metals such as copper, gold and uranium; removal of heavy metal ions from process streams and from liquid process wastes; and in the desulphurisation of high-sulphur fuels. Although widespread commercialisation of mineral biotechnology has not yet been achieved, it is estimated that by the Year 2000 mineral biotechnology will have a significant impact on the minerals and metal industry and will probably account for tens of billions of dollars worth of annual production world-wide. This paper examines the actual and possible future applications of biotechnology in the minerals, metal refining and fossil-fuel processing industries. Firstly, the important chemical (and biochemical) principles involved in bio-dissolution of metals from ores and solid wastes, and in bio-accumulation of metals from process and waste solutions are reviewed, including leaching practices - past, present and future. Microbial desulphurisation of coal, and microbially-enhanced oil recovery are also discussed. The practical aspects of genetics and genetic engineering, the types and characteristics of those microorganisms important to mineral biotechnology, and the current research trends are reviewed as well. Gold-bearing polymetallic sulfide deposits are common in Serbia, and mostly occur in the Karpato-Balkan and, to a lesser extent, the Serbo-Macedonian metallogenic province. These deposits û Coka Marin (Majdanpek), Grabova Reka (Blagojev Kamen), Lece (Medvedja) and Veliki Cip (Boranja) û are dominated by Cu and/or Pb-Zn mineralisation that contains a variety of Pb, Zn, Cu and Fe (¦ Sb, As, Bi) sulfides and sulfosalts, as well as native elements. Gangue minerals are composed of quartz, carbonates and rare silicates and barite. Based on their gold content these deposits can be divided in three groups:1. Polymetallic deposits with a high gold content (>1 g/t).2. Polymetallic deposits with an intermediate gold content (0.1 to 1 g/t), and3. Polymetallic deposits with a low gold content (<0.1 g/t). Gold occurs as native gold or as an alloy with silver. Native gold ranges in size from 5 to 20 ¦m, with a few rare grains over 100 ¦m, as isolated grains or as microveins (in the first group of deposits). Its distribution within the deposit in uneven. Native gold in the second group is smaller in size (1 - 5 ¦m, rarely 20 ¦m), where it is uniformly distributed in a quartz-silicate matrix. The third group is of no economical importance. The subject of research has been the first group of polymetallic deposits.

A hydrometallurgical process was developed for recovery of copper from copper-lead matte formed as an intermediate product at the BHAS lead smelter at Port Pirie. A plant utilizing this process was commissioned in 1984. The leach step involves oxidation of the copper-lead matte in an oxygenated acidic chloride-sulphate leachant. The results of laboratory scale testwork from which the chemistry of leaching was deduced, are presented in this paper. The rate of recovery of copper to solution from copper-lead matte depends largely_on the availability of oxygen to the sulphide surface. The optimum leach temperature is approximately 85¦C. Free acid must be supplied according to the stoichiometry of the leach reaction: Cu1.91 S + PbS + 2.91 H2SO4 + 1.455 02 = 1.91 Cu2+ + 1.91 SOj- + PbSO4(s) + 2.91 H2O + S¦ The grind size of the matte is of minor significance. Chloride concentration in leachant should be at or above a minimum of 10.0 g/l. Chloride acts to complex cuprous ions formed during leaching.

During devolatilisation, physical behaviour of coals was investigated in horizontal electrically heated furnace with an inert gas atmosphere, and gasification rates of four coal chars and coke were measured thermogravimetrically in a carbon dioxide atmosphere at temperatures in the range 1100oC - 1500oC. The volume change of chars was also measured in horizontal electrically heated furnace at various temperatures. Both reactivity and the activation energy for the gasification of coal chars were found to be strongly influenced by pore structure and the carbonisation conditions employed during preparation. CO2 reactivity of chars increases with increasing reaction temperature, and particularly increases more rapidly over 1300¦C. CO2 reactivity of coke is lower than that of non-coking coal chars in the range of 1100¦C to 1500¦C. CO2 reactivity of chars with smaller pore area and bigger pore diameter is less than that of chars with bigger pore area and smaller pore diameter. During gasification, the volume of chars did not change significantly at the lower temperatures of 1100¦C and 1200¦C, but at the high temperatures, 1300¦C to 1500¦C, the volume of chars quickly decreased due to ash softening and melting. The CO2 reactivities of the chars are controlled by the mixed control of chemical reaction and pore diffusion in the temperature range 1100¦C to 1300¦C, and by bulk diffusion in the temperature range 1400¦C to 1500¦C.

In late 1987 it was recognised that column flotation might have potential for improving the grade of the zinc concentrate produced at Pasminco's South Mine in Broken Hill. Intermittent test work was carried out during 1988 using a 90 mm diameter by 6 m high perspex column, built and initially operated by staff from CRA Advanced Technical Development. This column was found to have insufficient retention time so, during the first half of 1989, Pasminco constructed and installed a 200 mm diameter unit of the same height. Extensive testwork was carried out using this column during the latter half of 1989 and early 1990. It was clear from the results that a grade improvement of between 1 and 2 per cent (absolute) would be achievable. The effect of column cleaning on overall recovery was not established with the same degree of confidence, so the proposed new circuit is to include one of the existing banks of OK8 cleaner cells as a scavenger on column tailings. The test work provided sufficient data for preliminary design work to begin in May 1990 and commissioning of full scale zinc cleaner columns is planned for mid 1991. This paper summarizes the results and describes some of the experiences with column flotation at the Pasminco South Mine.

At the Risdon plant of the Electrolytic Zinc Company of Australasia Limited, impurities toxic to the electrolytic production of zinc metal, notably arsenic and antimony, have traditionally been coprecipitated when precipitating iron as ferric hydroxide. With the development of a new lead/zinc mine at Elura, New South Wales, it was anticipated that the concentration of impurities, particularly arsenic, in the zinc sulphide concentrates treated at Risdon would increase. This suggested that an increase in the capacity of the iron purification step in the Risdon plant would be required to cope with the higher input of these impurities.Laboratory investigations showed that the additional capacity would be achieved, either by a large increase in the amount of iron used as the "collector" in the process, or by a two-stage process. The latter approach was preferred as a increase in the amount of iron precipitated would lead to much higher operating costs and overloading of the existing equipment.In the two stage procedure, acidic iron bearing solution is added to solution feeding the first stage and most of the arsenic removed from solution when iron is precipitated from solution by neutralisation with limestone. Mter separation of the precipitated solids, acidic iron bearing solution is added to the solution, and remaining arsenic removed almost completely following neutralisation by limestone.This paper describes the laboratory and pilot plant results and the plant modifications required. Abrief account is also given of the operator training and acceptance in the use of the digital control facilities installed in the new plant.The new plant is working well and good solution purity is being maintained despite a substantial increase in the concentration of impurities in the raw materials.

With the rapid development of the Chinese steel industry, the strong demand for iron ores has led to huge imports of various iron ores from all over the world. As a relatively new force in the iron ore world and an important raw material supplier, Fortescue Metals Group (FMG) has achieved an annualised production rate of 100 Mt of iron ore fines. Typical blends were designed to simulate sinter blends employed in Chinese steel mills, and to determine sintering properties and metallurgical performance of blends comprising FMG Rocket fines in pilot sinter pot. It is shown that the sinter of typical blends comprising 15 - 20 per cent rocket fines possesses excellent sintering properties and metallurgical performance. With Rocket fines substitution for competitor ores in a typical customer mill blend comprising fully imported fines, the sinter productivity and tumble index increased from 1.45 t/m2h and 62.0 per cent to 1.54 t/m2h and 64.0 per cent, respectively, while attaining similar reducibility index and reduction degradation index at lower solid fuel consumption.CITATION:Zhu, D, Guo, Z, Ooi, T C, Chun, T, Pan, J and Young, J M, 2013. The cost of drilling consumables is always a large component of any mine budget. It is important that this cost be carefully examined with a view to reducing the overall cost per inetre or at least minimising its escalation.At Renison it is considered that the only way to ensure drilling costs do not rise unduly is through a total system of control from purchase to disposal.In 1979 extension of an existing drill supply service contract was carefully examined and abandoned in favour of a hybrid system. This system is providing a great deal of control over the use of drilling consumables and has maintained a relatively constant cost per drilled metre over the last five years.Current consignment stock contracts for drilling consumables are strictly specified by the Technical Services section of the Mine Department and consumables purchased under these contracts are distributed and refurbished/sharpened by a contractor.The total result of this package is individual drilling items that achieve the best cost per metre and careful distribution and maintenance to ensure maximum life.

The results of pot-furnace tests with 35 bituminous coals from 20 seams in New South Wales and Queensland were used to establish the relationship between coal properties, as determined by standard laboratory tests, and the combustion process. The rate of combustion is influenced chiefly by the expansion of the fuel bed, but this cannot be accurately predicted from the crucible swelling number of the coal.The effects of various other factors, such as calorific value and ash yield, were investigated and statistical analysis of the results shows that the coals could be classified satisfactorily according to two experimentally derived parameters, namely heat-release rate at an air flow rate of 260 lb/sq.ft/hr and air flow rate giving stoichiometric combustion. The grouping obtained is shown to be related to ash yield and swelling number.INTRODUCTIQNThe rate of heat release from the fuel bed of a travelling grate stoker and the efficiency with which the heat is used depend upon the design and method of operation of the furnace as well as upon the properties of the fuel. It is difficult to draw general conclusions concerning the influence of fuel properties from tests on a single stoker installation. In the pot-furnace test, on the other hand, a part of the same combustion process as occurs on a travelling grate is carried out in isolation, uninfluenced by furnace design variables, and consequently the effects of coal properties and of the method of pretreatment can readily be demonstrated.While the combustion pot provides a rapid method of assessing the combustion characteristics of a fuel during the ignition and burn-out stages under standard conditions, and of predicting changes in performance with changes in fuel or in air flow rate, it is unable to simulate certain features of furnace design and operation. This paper presents a method of measuring field power consumption of shearers and deriving specific energy consumption versus shearer haulage speed performance curves. A description of a computer program which simulates the cutting action of a shearer drum is presented. A comparison between the field specific energy curves and the computer simulation results is made. The simulation results compare well with the field data where all the coal seam is being cut by the shearer. The computer simulation results give back-calculated field pick force cutting characteristics, which allow the performance of the shearer to be predicted for other operating conditions, e.g. effect of changes to pick lacing, effect of changing the drum rotational speed, allows the calculation of power requirements for a particular production rate.

The Ok Tedi copper and gold mine is owned and operated by Ok Tedi Mining Limited (OTML) and is located in the Star Mountains of the Western Province of Papua New Guinea. Waste materials (both sulfidic and carbonate materials) from mining operations, comprising 55 Mt of waste rock and 31 Mt of tailings per annum, are discharged into the headwaters of mine area creeks where erosion and sediment transport carries significant proportions of the total waste into the Ok Tedi and Fly River systems. The tailings are potentially acid forming (PAF) while the waste rock has been strongly acid consuming with an excess of acid neutralising capacity (ANC) due to the high proportion of limestone waste. Tailings and waste rock are eroded into the river system and transported to the lower Ok Tedi and floodplains where deposition takes place. Because of concern due to vegetation die back, a dredging operation commenced in March 1998 to remove the sand fraction from the main river channel. OTML identified a potential future ARD risk from the stockpiled sands due to reduce limestone production at the mine and sulfide/carbonate mineral segregation in the river system and in the dredge sand stockpiles. This paper describes the structure and framework of an empirical model developed to assist OTML in planning ongoing mining operations to control ARD. Modelling identified the need to provide additional mined limestone to prevent future ARD generation from material deposited in the mine area creeks. With the additional limestone, the ARD risk in waste rock storage areas and in the Ok Tedi and Fly River sediments is predicted to remain low due to the combined effects of high ANC, high alkalinity of natural waters and high moisture contents (mostly fully water saturated). However, monitoring and modelling indicate that the ARD risk from the stockpiled sands will increase substantially during the remaining years of the operation. OTML have initiated programs to identify and evaluate options to mitigate this risk.

The Amacan Copper Project was constructed in the Philippines by a Finnish-Filipino Consortium during the years 1979 - 1982. The project involved a turnkey contract for a mine and a concentrator to process 25 000 tonne per day of porphy- ritic copper ore at a grade of 0.45% Cu. The orebody is located on Mindanao, the southernmost island of the Philippines, in rugged, mountainous terrain approximately 1 000 m above sea level. The adopted design principle was based on an efficient, straightforward installation utilising a minimum number of items of equipment each with high unit capacities. The consortium faced many problems which resulted in lengthy delays in construction and finally led to the client taking over responsibility for the completion of the project. The concentrator was successfully commissioned in July 1982.

Unnamed early prospectors panned gold from creeks drain- ing the Great Dividing Range in the early part of 1851. The first publicised discovery was credited to Edward Hargraves near Bathurst in New South Wales later in 1851 and during the ensu- ing gold rush, prospectors rapidly made discoveries elsewhere in New South Wales and later across the border in Victoria. Reference to the attached graphs of gold production indicates that for much of the first 100 years, gold production came from the easily worked and readily discovered shallow alluvial deposits, many of which were located in the creeks draining mountainous regions of Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland (Fig. 1 and 2). As these deposits were exhausted, prospectors turned their attention to outcrop lode deposits which led to the development of underground mining techniques and a significant boost in over- all gold production. With the discovery of the rich Golden Mile lodes in Kalgoorlie in 1893, gold production increased signifi- cantly and peaked around the turn of the century. At that time, the enormous potential of the great Witwatersrand deposits in South Africa had only just been appreciated and for a few years, Australia led the world in gold production (1855-1863 and again in 1903). Underground mining continued in the Eastern Goldfields area of Western Australia, the Bendigo-Ballarat region of Victoria and in northeast Queensland. Very few of these operations continued beyond the Second World War, except the larger producers in the Kalgoorlie region where recovered grade had dropped to about 6 g/t Au. By the early 1970s with the gold price fixed at US$35 per ounce, most of the operations were shut down as labour costs escalated, with only the low cost bulk mining operation at Mt. Charlotte and the high grade reefs at Norseman continuing in Production.
