The object of this paper is not to describe any particular type of engine in close technical detail but rather to give a general picture of past and present practice in this important section of the industry. The subject involves the study of almost 600 years of coal mining history which has fluctuated from stagnation to extremely rapid progress.Up to the year 1300, coal was obtained from outcrops and exposed beds, but this easily worked source soon gave out, so by that time shafts had to be sunk to the coal seams, and coal mining proper commenced its career.These early shafts were very shallow, and winding equipment was not a matter for much concern. Raising coal was generally achieved by human labour, which was called "coal bearing." Coal was loaded into baskets. strapped to a man's back, and carried from the underground workings to the pit bottom. The unfortunate individual then climbed ladders to the top of the shaft, unloaded the basket, and descended the shaft for the next load. Men, women and even children, were employed as the mine expanded, and were generally bound to the colliery for life, performing daily work which would now be regarded as slavery. This primitive method of raising coal to the surface was slow, inefficient and highly dangerous, yet for want of a better method it continued until in 1602 it isrecorded as having been abolished in Wales, one of England's great coal districts. The Mungana group of mines, in the Chillagoe district, yielded 334,000 tons of ore giving 31,831 tons of lead, 7,907 tons of copper and 3,228,600 ounces of silver. The Girofla mine produced approximately 220,000 tons of ore, and with the Lady J ane mine supplied most of the ore from this centre. The deposit was discovered in 1888, but active development did not commence from the main shaft until 1898. A subsidiary of the New Chillagoe Railway and Mining Co. Ltd., the Mungana (Chillagoe) Mining Co. Ltd., worked the mine from 1902 until 1914, selling copper, copper-lead, lead ores and fluxes to the smelters at Chillagoe. The smelters stopped operations in 1914 when the richer ores of the Girofla had been worked out and production from the Lady Jane had ceased due to heavyground and fire. The Girofla shaft was 823ft. deep with a cross-cut at 810ft. At the 710ft. level contour drives had delineated the orebody, which had been stoped about 10ft. above the level. Except for flux ores which had been stoped only for favourable smelter tariffs, the orebody was practically exhausted above the 610ft. leveL Under company ownership the mine yielded 139,265 tons of an average grade of 4.QlYr copper, 16.2% lead and 12.5 oz. per ton silver.In 1921 the Queensland Government re-opened the mine and worked it until 1927. The North Lode (Fig. 2) was discovered almost immediately at the 100ft. level and was worked down to the 410ft. leveL The ore from this branch and the completion of the stope at the 710ft. level yielded about 80,000 tons of ore averaging 0.4 copper, 9.8 lead and 7.8 oz. per ton silver during this period.

This research is to grope for a method to reduce high pore pressure taking place on tunnel shotcrete lining, especially in underwater tunnels, effectively by utilising a new concept of patternised pin drain. Accordingly, the patternised pin drain system is investigated numerically in order to confirm to the effect of reduction of pore pressure by the pin drain and its effective application. Installation of pin drain shows considerable reduction in the figure of pore pressure. It is found through 2D numerical modelling that the change of pore pressure, according to the shape and the location of pin drain, is sensitive by the sequences of the change of location > the change of length > the change of angle degree. In the results of investigation in 3D modelling, the pore pressure is the largest in the centre of the interval among pin drains, and it is possible to obtain an ideal degree of longitudinal angle and an interval by investigating pore pressure taking place on the lining.

Kobe is divided by the Rokko Mountains, runn- ing from east to west. The southern section of Kobe is highly developed in contrast with the northern section, but big, new residential pro- jects like the Hokusetsu New Town and Hokushin New Town are steadily being developed. To handle future traffic between the two sections of the city, the double-tracked Hokushin Line, now under construction, will connect the Shin Kobe Station of the Kobe Municipal Transit (Kobe's subway system) to the Tanigami Station of the Kobe Electric Railway. The locations of Kobe city and Hokushin Line are shown in Fig.-1 and Fig.-2 respectively.

The Western Mining Corporation mining lease on the Bendigo Goldfield measures 5krri x 18km with more than 20 anticlinal folds parallelling th long north-south boundaries. Numerous closely spaced shafts and extensive underground workings on the reef lines along the folds flooded with groundwater following the progressive abandonment of the field. Preliminary water sampling and assessment demonstrated that a major dewatering programme and acceptable disposal methods were necessary to dewater interconnected old workings in areas of interest prior to any underground work taking place. A field wide geohydolic investigation was undertaken to establish geohydraulic parameters, groundwater recharge rates and water qualities. Data from the field investigation together with estimates of the volume geometry of the submerged workings as obtained from old mine plans, production history, and limited pump testing results were used with an appropriate analytical model to obtain estimates of water discharge rates required to reach various dewatering targets. Water disposal options were limited by relatively high salinities, arsenic levels, contained hydrogen sulphide, and the mine locations within the urban areas surrounding Bendigo. Direct disposal to the surface drainage system could not be considered, treatment to acceptable discharge standards was not economically feasible, and it was necessary to adopt a strategy of collection, containment, and evaporation.

Permian oroclines in eastern Australia must have formed by sliding on a detachment surface. It is identified as a westward- dipping Devonian and Carboniferous sub- duction zone. Major strike-slip faults probably sole out on the same surface. One major fault with an associated serpentinite belt was pulled away from the craton abd bent into loops. Basins formed in the loops.

Tailings dams constructed by the upstream method have traditionally been built using the sand fraction of the tailings, which has automatically provided a relatively permeable embankment material, and helped provide the necessary drainage conditions which are a pre-requisite for safe and stable dam construction using this method. This paper discusses some recent trends which have resulted in proposals to use impermeable material in place of the sand fraction as the embankment material, both for the starter dam, and subsequent lifts. The consequences of these types of decisions on the overall stability of the dam are illustrated, and the need for continued monitoring of pore pressures in the tailings as the dam is raised is emphasised.

Over a 4 hr period of steady plant operation samples were taken at regular intervals from points within the grinding and flotation circuits. Size fractions of each composite sample were analysed for lead and zinc values and a comparison made of the behaviour of the lead, zinc, and gangue minerals, size by size throughout the whole circuit.Analysis of the breakage behaviour using dynamic mathematical models gave the rates of breakage of each size fraction of each main component. Simulated grinding experiments showed that the main grinding circuit had some reserve capacity.In the lead flotation circuit all lead values between 150 mesh (Tyler) and 5 microns had excellent flotation characteristics, and a major proportion had a high rate of flotation which was practically the same for all sizes. Increase in overall lead recovery would require improvement of the flotation behaviour of ultra-fine lead minerals. These were slow floating and were responsible for approximately half the lead losses in the final zinc concentrate and one-third of the lead losses in the final tails.All sizes of zinc values between 100 mesh and 7 microns floated well and the performance of the zinc flotation circuit was mainly limited by the relatively poor flotation of the very fine zinc values. Approximately 60 per cent of the zinc lost to the final tails lay within the minus 7 micron fraction.The overall flotation conditions were conducive to very good selective flotation of the major proportion of the values and limitations in metallurgical performance were mainly due to the properties of the ultra-fines.

Design of underground extraction layouts to protect surface improvements is an important area of subsidence research in the Coal Mining Engineering Branch of the Department of Mineral Resources, New South Wales, Australia. Some conventional partial extraction layout are important with reference to coal recovery and surface subsidence. The analysis ofsubsidence data collected from field surveys over longwall panels in the Southern Coalfield of New South Wales allows assessment of the effect of pillars left unmined between the longwall panels in reducing surface subsidence. The availability ofa wide variety of layouts with ranging degrees of surface movements affords considerable flexibility in designing layouts to suit a particular situation.Total extraction of coal should be the aim as far as possible. Partial extraction layouts should only be considered when surface subsidence movements caused by total extraction are not acceptable to the surface improvements.

In many branches of engineering, there has to be an understanding of the motion of fluids in order to solve problems. Many safety and health problems in the mining industry are typical examples that involve the understanding and analysis of fluid flow, such as explosions, the spread of fires, dispersion of gas and dust, and ventilation patterns. Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) is concerned with the use of computers to produce information about the ways in which fluids flow in given situations. Until recently CFD has been widely applied to a variety of industrial sectors and increasingly to problems in the health and safety areas. With the arrival of more powerful computers and CFD packages, CFD techniques are no longer practised solely in a research environment, but can be used by engineers in many industrial fields. This paper introduces the basic concepts and general procedures involved in the use of CFD technology. A comparison is given as a guide to the major features of a number of widely used commercial CFD codes. Areas of potential CFD applications are identified in a range of safety and health problems in mining industry. An example is presented to illustrate the use of this technology. It is believed that the exploitation of these areas using CFD approach will contribute significantly to the solution of today's many mine health and safety problems.

Mesothermal lode-gold deposits often pose problems during sampling because of their complex and erratic gold grade distribution, and the presence of coarse gold. Effective sampling and sample preparation protocols must form the basis of any resource estimate at whatever stage a project is at. Design of a sampling regime must be based upon a thorough understanding of orebody mineralogy and geology. This should include consideration of gold particle size and distribution. The sample type, size and density employed must also be based on the underlying geology of the deposit. Choice of sample preparation procedure and assay type is of critical importance if fundamental sampling error and analytical errors are to be minimised. Traditional fire assays, using small charge sizes, consistently understate assays gained from large charge sizes and techniques such as screen fire assay and bulk leach extractable gold assay. The proportion of coarse gold within samples will have a profound effect on the requirements for sample preparation and assay method. The application of Gy sampling theory can help to reduce errors within the processing of samples of broken rock. Quality control/assurance of sampling regimes must also be critically assessed. The problems associated with sampling mesothermal lode-gold type deposits are presented as case studies from Western Australia and North America.

Plant tests of magnetic conditioning have shown increased flotation recovery of paramagnetic sulfide minerals (chalcopyrite, sphalerite and pentlandite) in the -38 ¦m size fraction within rougher and cleaner flotation circuits. A statistical plant test was undertaken in the Mount Isa zinc flotation circuit where magnetic conditioning was tested simultaneously in both the rougher circuit and the cleaner retreat circuit (cleaner scavenger). This test resulted in a normalised increase of 1.60 per cent in the rougher circuit zinc recovery and simultaneously a normalised increase of 4.60 per cent in the cleaner retreat circuit zinc recovery - to a very high level of statistical confidence. Interestingly, in a novel approach, it was possible to verify the plant test results in two ways. Firstly, detailed MLA analysis of the tails confirmed the statistical plant test results and showed that the greatest effect of magnetic conditioning was on the sphalerite in the C3 - C6 size fraction, where there was a reduction of around 15 per cent in zinc in tails. Moreover, there was a reduction of around 15 per cent in liberated sphalerite across all -38 ¦m size fractions, but only a seven per cent reduction in non-liberated sphalerite in the tails. Secondly, plant modelling showed that increasing the rougher zinc recovery would cause an increase in zinc feed grade to the cleaner retreat circuit. The Emperor gold deposit occurs on the western margin of a 5 Ma caldera in a large, mafic shoshonitic shield volcano on the island of Viti Levu, Fiji. Products from two major pulses of post-caldera intermediate volcanism filled the caldera. Caldera collapse-related steep and flat faults and zones of shattered rock provided per- meable conduits for vertical and lateral fluid migration and favourable sites for ore deposition. One large hydrothermal system, operating concurr- ently with extrusion of the second pulse of resurgent volcanism, may have produced porphyry- style alteration within the caldera, epithermal mineralization at Vatukoula, and weakly minera- lized, siliceous veins and breccias in an outflow zone northeast of Vatukoula.

This paper outlines the mechanism of Stress Corrosion Cracking (SCC) and how it can cause premature failure of rock bolts. SCC occurs due to the progressive development and growth of cracks in the surface of a metal, and it is caused by the combined effects of stress and a corrosive environment affecting susceptible metals and alloys. It can occur in most metals including stainless steel. It is not a new phenomenon, but its effect on rock bolts has only been recognised recently.Rock bolt failures caused by SCC appear to be brittle failures which occur at less than the ultimate tensile strength of the bolt. In the mining industry, SCC failures of rock bolts can occur a few months, or after many years of exposure to stress and a corrosive environment. If SCC of rock bolts is suspected, then the rock bolts should be examined by a metallurgist, and steps should be taken to reduce the problem.

Structure is the most important control on the location of hematite deposits in the Hamersley Province in the Pilbara region of Western Australia. Unravelling the structural history of mineralised areas, however, is complex because the Province underwent three orogenic events, and three regional extension events followed the main episodes of compression. Steeply E to ENE dipping normal faults immediately predated deposition of the Beasley Quartzite of the lower Wyloo Group after the Ophthalmian Orogeny. Steeply NE and SW-S dipping normal faults predated deposition of the McGrath formation of the middle Wyloo Group, following the Panhandle Orogeny. The resulting interpreted rift was subsequently reactivated and tilted during the Capricorn Orogeny. Late NE trending normal faults are confined to the eastern half of the Province. High-grade hematite deposits occur in rocks that range from intensely folded (Mt Whaleback, Giles Mini) to rocks with less, or only little deformation (Paraburdoo, Channar), suggesting that folding had at best limited influence on ore genesis. In contrast, extensional normal faults are always associated with high-grade hematite deposits, and in particular faults that link the underlying dolomites of the Wittenoom Formation with the overlying iron formation, thus providing a pathway for mineralising alkaline fluids.

With the recent wider introduction of friction hoists of the Koepe type. for winding from depths of more than 3000 feet it has been found that failure by fatigue is the most common form of rope deterioration. Large numbers of wire breaks occur near the centre of the rope cross-section and it is difficult to detect these with certainty using the preferred d.c. magnetic test. For best results with conventional search coils their dimen- sions should be related to the typical wire break field pattern surrounding the longitudionally magnetised rope. The field of a broken wire was experimentally determined, using a Polish type MD6 Defectograph wire rope testing magnet and a short prepared length of rope with a movable simulated broken wire. The external field distortion perpendicular to the rope was measured by means of a gaussmeter and Hall probe. The advantages of this method are that terrestial magnetism and inherent rope "noise" have no effect on the results.

A study of the bacterial oxidation of naturally occurring high-purity sulphide minerals (FeS2, Fel_xS, CuFeS2, Cu2S) has been conducted using a mesophilic strain of T. 6ejtAooLcdcth4. As well as metal analyses and solution pH, partitioning of sulphide sulphur into elemental sulphur and sulphate ion has been monitored. Partially oxidised sulphide substrates have been characterised at regular time intervals by X-ray diffraction methods and extra-cellular organic compounds reporting into leach solution have been identified by'thin layer chromatography. The results indicate that the S¦/SO4 2 partitioning of the sulphide substrates is independent of cell inoculum size and initial pulp density and varies with solution pH, Eh, leaching time and mineralogical properties of the individual sulphide minerals. The signifi- cance of results for applications in selective flotation, coal desulphurisation and agglomera- tion has been outlined.

A simulation program has been developed tc predict the airflow distribution and thermal environment in multi-level narrow lode Cornish =n mines. Because of the approximate equality between fan power and natural ventilation _rergy a true thermodynamic mesh balance using mass flow rather than volume flow rate was required. Compressibility is allowed for by calculating mesh corrections on a mass flow of dry air basis. In this context, and within the confines of any steady state model, both the steady flow energy and pressure equations are satisfied with equal validity. The mesh balance includes natural ventilation energy, frictional losses, moisture lift work, water droplet energy and fan energy.
