The Mount Stavely Volcanic Complex compri- ses one of a number of northerly trending fault bounded greenstone occurrences in Western Vict- oria, of probable Cambrian or older age. The greenstone belt is coincident with several linear positive aeromagnetic anomalies, which outline the surface and subsurface extensions of these greenstones. Mapping at Mount Stavely has identified serpentinite, variolitic basalt, two-pyroxene and pyroxene-hornblende andesite, dacite, rhyodacite and their pyroclastic equiv- alents. Chemically and mineralogically the volcanics constitute a calc-alkaline assemblage. The mineral potential of the region has been enhanced following a discovery by Pennzoil of Australia Limited near Ararat, of sulphide min- eralisation containing approximately 1 million tonnes at 2.7 percent copper. The volcanic environment of the Mount Stavely Volcanic Complex is discussed in terms of similar environments found in Canada.

Single station group velocities of fundamental made Rayleigh waves over the period range 15-100 s are carguted for five provincial profiles of the West Pacific. Based on recordings of earthquakes around the West Pacific by the W~ (World Wide Standard Seismic Network) stations AFI (Afianalu), HNR (Honiara), WEL (Wellington), PAR (Raratonga) and RAB (Rabaul). The inversion of the derived dispersion curves for average shear velocity-depth structure of the crust, LID and LVL shows that (i) the over-all structure beneath the profile 'westernSamoa-Micronesia-Mariana' is in between that of regions 3 and 4 of Pacific Ocean (Yu and Mitchell, 1979), except that the velocity is slightly lower, (ii) the uppermost mantle beneath the 'Vitiaz Trench' profile between AFI and HNR is similar to that of region 2 of the Pacific - in other words, thin LID and thick LVL; (iii) the structure beneath the ' Ibnga-Keradec Ridge' profile has a thick crust with thick sediments, and LID-LVL velocity and thickness are similar to region 3 of the Pacific; (iv) beneath the profiles ' Tonga/ Kermadec Trench events-RAR station' the structure is intermediate between regions 3 and 4 of the Pacific Crean; (v) from decomposition of the 'Solomon-meriana' profile, the structure beneath the Cntong Java Plateau has a thick crust with thick sediments and the uppermost mantle is similar to that of region 3 of the Pacific clean.

For several years, the Geology Department of the University of Canterbury has hosted a series of postgraduate projects in the field of coal studies, supported principally by the Ministry of Energy and to a lesser extent by private companies. These projects have involved mainly West Coast Coalfields, and my own studies have focussed on inorganic geochemical aspects of West Coast coals. Because of the large number of potentially important analyte elements in coal, and the wide diversity of coals occurring in the West Coast region, this project has required a substantial amount of work to be spent on sample collection, sample preparation, development of analytical methods, and actual analysis. Considerable problems must be faced at the sampling stage: Can sufficient information be obtained from whole-seam composites, or should seams be sampled in plies. Ply analysis is preferable, but results of proximate analyses are usually available for composites only. Where multi-seam drillhole samples become available (eg Greymouth Coalfield, where some holes yielded more than six sampled seams), the ply option involves a dramatic increase in the number of samples. I have attempted to strike a workable compromise between geographical coverage of coalfields, and detailed sampling of individual seams at each locality. In many cases, sample material has been used jointly with Jane Newman who has carried out petrographic studies.

Dewatering of solutions is one of the most significant requirements of the resources industry, as practically all mining endeavours use water in their process for leaching, extraction, cooling, dilution or for potable drinking water.

Large scale cut and fill mining in narrow silver-lead-zinc orebodies began at Mount Isa in 1964. Initially each orebody was one stope and access was via raises from the level above. Upholing was the principal mining method, although flatbacking was employed where ground conditions were more difficult. Developments since have included access via footwall inclines and connection of all stopes with major crosscuts. Flatbacking is the principal method. The most recent cut and fill operation is now fully mechanised using drilling jumbos, rockbolting jumbos and load-haul-dump units. Improved ground support and drilling and blasting practices have enhanced safety, recovery and productivity in all cut and fill operations.

Although a formal EES was not prepared for the WIM project due it winding down, CRA Ltd has been through the EES and planning scheme amendment process for its demonstration plant. Community consultation was involved with all aspects of this process. The paper outlines the WIM EES consultation program and provides lessons for future community consultation for major projects in regional locations with significant potential to alter the environment.

Some four hundred million tonnes of low rank sub-bituminous coal occurs in four separ rate lobes at Leigh Creek. These deposits are in a sparsely populated pastoral area remote from industrial centres. Early development was retarded because of high mining and haul- age costs and the availability of other fuels. The search for additional fuels after the second world war led to thorough investigations into the burning characte-,istics of the coal and the discovery of shallow coal suitable for open out mining. The development of the field included the establishment of water supply, improved rail facilities and a town.

Geological structure is one of the main controls on ground conditions within mining. It has a significant impact on the mining conditions and productivity of coal mines within the Sydney - Bowen Basin. The three main types of faults common to this region, normal, reverse and strike-slip systems, each present distinct challenges to mining. These systems effect a wide range of geotechnical and mining conditions within the mines. These include coal quality, strata stability, goat and caving behaviour, productivity and maintenance schedules of mining equipment, mine design and mine-site stress fields. A better understanding of the regional, local and mine-scale structural setting, timing relationships of structural events and the mechanisms of fault formation will greatly aid industry's push for greater productivity and competitiveness.

In flotation, the property that is exploited to effect the separation of a mineral from an ore is referred to as its floatability. Assessment and quantification of ore floatability is of fundamental importance in modelling and simulation of flotation circuits. This paper describes the design, construction and operation of a new laboratory flotation rig that has been developed at the Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre (JKMRC) to determine the floatability of different ores on a small-sale. The rig is designed for continuous operation. The major features of the rig are highlighted in this paper. An unique characteristic of the rig is a 9.1 L conditioning vessel. This provides a mixing regime close to plug-flow which avoids complications such as different collector coverages for similarly sized particles (which would considerably increase the complexity of ore floatability determination). The main advantages of this rig when compared to conventional batch flotation cells include better control of the chemical environment and the ability to determine froth recovery, entrainment and water recovery with increased accuracy. Preliminary tests undertaken with a high-grade lead/zinc ore from BHP Cannington are presented demonstrating the good level of reproducibility obtainable in operating the equipment.

The selection of the material sizing and mine dewatering systems are important elements in the development of a large-scale, high tonnage (greater than 4 Mt/a) underground hard rock mine. The sizing system will influence the size and type of the ore haulage system and therefore how the underground project is developed. With more underground developments considering or implementing caving methods of mining, the selection of the material sizing systems is also influenced by the caving fragmentation. Traditionally, crusher systems are used for material sizing in large hard rock mines, with the crusher installation and its ancillary equipment representing a substantial capital investment. Underground cave mining type operations generally express themselves with large surface subsidence areas, which can lead to large inflows of water from major rain events or purging underground aquifer systems. To minimise disruption to mine production, the dewatering system needs to be sized, with consideration to both storage and pumping capacities. The balance between storage and pumping capacity is assessed to provide the optimal economic solution with the appropriate risk measures. This paper outlines a process for the selection of material sizing and dewatering systems for large-scale caving operations. This process is illustrated with information drawn from NewcrestÆs Ridgeway Deeps Block Cave project. The Ridgeway Deeps Block Cave is located directly beneath the existing Ridgeway Sublevel Cave Mine.

Porphyry-related skarns are common around thePacific Rim. Examples include Cadia and Goonumbla (Australia) Ok Tedi (PNG) and Ertsberg and Grasberg (Indonesia). Although usually treated as separate to the adjacent porphyry copper-gold (Cu-Au) deposit, skarns near porphyry deposits are commonly inextricably part of the larger Cu-Au system(s). Using Cadia as the primary example, we demonstrate that large, zoned, calc-silicate skarns necessitate very large porphyry systems. The Big Cadia and Little Cadia Fe-Cu-Au skarns are associated with the Late Ordovician to Early Silurian high-K calc-alkaline to shoshonitic Cadia Intrusive Complex (CIC). Together, these skarns total ~40 Mt of Cu-Au ore but are much smaller than the adjacent Cadia EastûFar East, Cadia Hill, and Ridgeway porphyry-related Cu-Au deposits. Historically these skarns were large, economically significant and highly controversial deposits. Porphyry-related skarns typically have well-developed calc-silicate and ore zonation. At Cadia, classic skarn zonation has been mapped between Cadia Quarry (proximal) and Big Cadia (distal). Over this 800 minterval, mineralogy trends from: proximal garnet > pyroxene, grading to; fe-oxide-rich skarn; and distal haematite-epidote-rich skarn. At Little Cadia, analogous but symmetrical alteration zonation is present. Big Cadia formed from fluids that migrated laterally within calcareous units and were sourced from strongly altered quartz monzonite phases of the CIC at Cadia Quarry. Isotope studies and mass-balance calculations suggest that prograde and retrograde skarn alteration was caused by magmatic dominated fluids. They also indicate that the mapped alteration system at Cadia Quarry is insufficient to account for the total volume of Fe present at Big Cadia. Despite the typically oxidised nature of many porphyry systems, not all skarns in the porphyry environment are oxidised. Assimilation of carbonaceous sediment by hydrous, alkaline intrusions could lead to reduced Au skarns rather than porphyry deposits. An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. The empirical stope design techniques developed by Mathews et al (1981) and refined by Potvin (1988) and others, have gained rapid acceptance in Australia in the 1990s as a simple, æfirst-passÆ means of designing primary stopes. However, it is recognised that these æstability graphÆ methods can only provide broad design guidelines. Recently published stability graphs (Hutchinson and Diederichs, 1996) encompass a wide range of geological environments, which are not discussed, and the influence of time and blasting practices cannot be easily reviewed. The æscatterÆ in the graphs must reflect, to some degree, different operating practices as well as subtle but important differences in the pre-mining conditions that are not adequately accounted for in the æmodified stability numberÆ. Development of a ælocalÆ, site-specific stability graph may overcome some of these problems. At NormandyÆs Golden Grove Operations, Western Australia, detailed reviews of stope stability performance, including Cavity Monitoring System (CMS) surveys, are undertaken for every stope, with the objective of developing a series of local stability graphs, customised to site conditions and calibrated in terms of æAverage Falloff ThicknessÆ (AFT). Cablebolting of stope hangingwalls is used to develop reinforced æbeamsÆ on each sublevel, effectively dividing the full span into smaller, more stable æsubspansÆ. By analysing stope stability performance in terms of fall-off, cost-benefit studies can be undertaken of the effect of cablebolting and other options for modifying stope spans. The approach used to develop the local stability graphs, and their integration into routine stope design procedures at Golden Grove, is described. The experience gained during stope extraction in the Scuddles orebodies has been successfully applied to the Gossan Hill æC-PanelÆ orebody. This methodology should be applicable to other underground mining operations.

In cut-and-break rock excavation use is made of the fact that breaking rock in tension towards a free face requires a specific energy of excavation which is small in comparison with that required for rock excavation using conventional tools operating by a process of indentation of the rock.The process of cut-and-break excavation comprises firstly a cutting step in which a groove is cut into the rock surface, followed by a breaking phase in which a tool is inserted into the cut in order to break the rock adjacent to the cut.

In coal room and pillar, and pillar extraction panels, the sidewall conditions were investigated based on underground measurements and numerical simulations. Three-dimensional linear elastic models provided a useful and quick prediction of the amount of sidewall spalling. However, more complex constitutive models were required to simulate more accurately the extent of fracturing and its effect on the stress re-distribution. The input parameters of a Mohr-Coulomb model were determined by back-analysis of underground measurements, and the effect of the depth of the workings and the time dependent occcurrence of coal pillar fracturing were analyzed.

Large Off Highway Trucks operated in this country are generally of Diesel Electric Drive, this system tends to employ the familiar Electric Wheel. A number of fleets now employ the Traction Motor System as an alternative. An investigation is made of the operation of two such fleets. A brief description is given defining the components and their basic functions in each system. Available life history is presented and system reliability, maintainability and operator reaction is examined. Although manufacturers are now offering mechanical or mechanical/hydraulic drives in the larger machines comments will be restricted to examining the Diesel Electric System. Since commencing operations in the mid 1960 period Hamersley Iron has made use of the diesel electric drive system using the familiar Electric Wheel. The quartzite added at the blast furnace for the purpose of adjusting the chemistry of the burden inputs is shown to have a disproportionate impact on both the level and the variability of the hot metal silicon (HMSi). This conclusion is supported not only by direct correlation involving data from five blast furnaces, but also by mass balances. In one case the R2 correlation coefficient was 0.96 and the mass balance was accurate to within five per cent for a wide range of quartzite additions. The results indicate that as much as 43 per cent of the silicon in the added quartzite reports directly to the hot metal. Indeed, silicon from quartzite was found to be much more likely to report to the hot metal compared to silicon from regular sources (eg coke and sinter), reflecting differences in the activity of the silicon source.

The Shamrock Gold Mine has been brought from exploration to production within three years. Mining of the openpit is scheduled for June 1990 with commissioning in April of the 180 000 TPA carbon-in-pulp mill on old tailings and rock dumps. The development of a small openpit containing 344 000 tonnes at 3.6 g/t Au in a complex sulphide ore has required extensive metallurgical testwork to optimise recovery, and ensure profitability. The project has been undertaken in a changing economic climate, with increasing restrictive legislation. The decision to mine was further complicated by the escalating cost of installing a heap leach operation in South East Queensland. Decreasing costs of consumables, in particular sodium cyanide, and the opportunity to purchase a suitable transportable mill at a reasonable price made the project robustly viable as a CIP operation.

Coal Mining machinery has undergone enormous changes in design and complexity of controls in the past 10 years. Specialised, high productivity equipment has been manufactured in Australia, in sufficient volume, to satisfy the local mullet needs.Local manufacturers face greater challenges from overseas competition, as well as increased customer demands to improve machine performance, productivity, quality, reliability and safety. In order to meet these demands now and in the future, it will be necessary to review work practises, and restructure production and quality systems to incorporate the latest principles and philosophies.

The Ore Reserve/Exploration System implemented at Mount Isa for M.I.M. Holdings Limited is a comprehensive computer system designed to process assay, geological, structural and survey data input via special purpose logging sheets from daily activities at Isa Mine, Hilton Mine and various Carpentaria Exploration Company prospects. The system performs two basic functions; (1) data acquisition, validation and file maintenance to prepare the data for retrieval, and (2) generation of routine and optional reports. The types of reports available range from masterfile detail printouts and retrieval of data by key items to survey computations, structural analyses, cutoff calculations, statistical analyses and ore reserve calculations by the polygonal, inverse square or moving average techniques. The use of various optional reports available through the system is illustrated by several examples, and planned future development is discussed.
