The Dome Mine of Timmins Mining company is located in South Porcupine, N.W. Ontario. The orebody being mined partially lies in the No. 3 shaft pillar. Stability analysis has been carried out to establish the influence of nearby mining on ground movement in the shaft vicinity. Mathematical modelling of shaft displacement has been done for stope layout at depths from 180-210 m and distances of 10-50 m from the shaft. Analysis indicated that ground displacement around the shaft is below 1 mm/m and one third less for cut and fill than in the case of open stope mining. The result of the investigation was later confirmed by cut and fill mining of this orebody.

A technique has been developed for the fast measurement of the liquidus temperature of molten salt systems. The method employs a type K thermocouple embedded within the centre of a copper cylinder. The cylinder is immersed into the molten salt bath and the resultant heating curve is recorded using a PC-based data logging system. Upon immersion of the cylinder into the bath, a layer of salt freezes from the melt onto the surface. When this layer remelts during heating, the shape of the heating curve exhibits a change. The onset of this change can be detected by numerical differentiation of the heating curve, and the temperature at the onset represents an estimate of the liquidus of the melt. This work describes the technique and its application to the measurement of liquidus temperatures of MgC12 - NaCl and BaC12 - NaCl salt mixtures, in addition to a number of solidus temperatures.

Examination of the geology and support performance at two site leads to development of an under tanding of the influence of caving on powered support rating. The two site represent the current extremes in support rating, i.e. 6/260 tonne supports operating in the Hirst seam at Solsgirth Colliery, Scotland, and 4/900 tonne supports operating in the Bulli seam, West Cliff Colliery, Australia.A conceptual model considers the coal ahead of the face, the powered support, and the caved waste to be three yielding foundations which interact to control the subsidence of the roof strata.The caving mechanisms identified for the strata of the Hirst and Bulli seams, are different. These mechanisms being related to rock properties - the palaegeography and depositional conditions at each site-produce caved wastes with different yield characteristics.An analysis of the results obtained for convergence and support reaction during production cycles at both sites shows the manner in which support reaction is developed, indicating the importance of higher setting load densities in the Bulli seam.Evaluation of the work done on the subsiding roof strata during typical production cycles by two of the yielding foundations the powered support and the caved waste immediately behind the powered support - further demonstrates the influence of caving mechanisms on support rating.

Here, in what is partly a review and partly a personal viewpoint, I take stock of changes in emphasis and comprehension on the subject of basaltic volcanism in the decade that has passed since the completion of the landmark Basaltic Volcanism Study Project (1981). I concentrate attention on the relatively neglected physical-volcanology aspects (in 1988 it was still possible to publish a 340-page book on flood basalts with barely any mention of physical mechanisms).I adopt the useful unifying concept of "volcanic system" to embrace the invariably-present intrusions as well as the volcano; I consider controls exercised by magma-supply rate and modulator-mechanisms on the nature of the system;I emphasize that sheeted-intrusion complexes, consisting either of dikes or inclined sheets (depending on the ability of the system to expand laterally) occur in all eroded major systems and fuel geothermal systems; I show how constraints set by cooling of narrow intrusions cause such complexes to be wedge-like and produce considerable rotations; I consider the role of the level of neutral buoyancy in making magma chambers possible, causing lateral subsurface magma flow and localizing intrusions, while the LNB itself can be accentuated by intrusions; and I examine the possibility that underwater systems could have very different internal structures from systems on land.

In China the hydrogeological type of solid mineral deposits can be divided into A. Mineral deposits with fissure water; B. Mineral deposits with pore water; and C. Mineral deposits with karst water. The hydrogeological conditions of mineral deposits with fissure water are relatively simple with the exception of a few cases. Mineral deposits with pore water are few but great amounts of ground water can be encountered in the mine accompanied by floating sand or slope failure during the exploitation. Mineral deposits with karst water are complex in their hydrogeological conditions. Enormous inrushes occur frequently in the mines of north China; Karst collapses are a serious matter in the mines of the south; Subterranean river and conduit systems are often encountered in the southwest. This paper will give full discussion on these features and put forward a way of combating and controlling the groundwater problem in accordance with type and feature.

Mixtures of ammonia and cyanide at low concentrations leach gold selectively from copper-gold ores. The effects of various reagent compositions on three different ore types containing between 0.3 - 1.5 per cent Cu are reported. It is shown that the results and optimum compositions vary according to the ore, which is attributed in part to the mineralogy and adsorption of solution species on the mineral surfaces. The solution chemistry of the Cu-NH3-CN system indicates that Cu(CN)a - and Cu(CN)3 species are involved in the leaching mechanism. Rotating disc studies on pure gold and copper are reported which show that the Cu(CN)32- species leach gold at about half the rate of CN but leach copper at the same rate. The presence of ammonia retards the leaching rate further. Mixtures of Cu(CN)a3- and NH3 effectively leach gold from Telfer tailing without leaching copper. The role of ammonia appears to be to control the precipitation of copper rather than the kinetics of leaching.

Pressure cyanidation of the minus 10 micron slimes fraction of the Fimiston flotation concentrates for the recovery of gold values has been evaluated as an alternative processing route to the roasting and atmospheric cyanide leaching of the calcine. Laboratory and pilot trials have demonstrated that gold extractions of greater than 94 per cent can be achieved at cyanide consumptions of 12-24 kg/t and oxygen consumptions of 0.1-0.3 Nm3/t with total pressures of 1000-2000 kPa. Economic and operational assessment of several reactor configurations suggests autoclaves may be preferred over pipe reactors at treatment rates of 10 t concentrate/h.

Basing upon many and long practical experiences of gas drainage from coal seam and results investigations on the gas flow through in si-tu coal seam using tracer gases,it became clear that solid coal itself is hardly gas permeable or has extremely low gas permeability. Almost all of gas flows from a coal seam into boreholes through fracture net- works intersecting with them.Primary and secondary fractures in coal seams differ in their size and continuity from place to place according to differences of the coal strength and the stress conditions. A lot of gas can be drained through boreholes which intersect with many and/or wide fractures. A mathematical model for gas flow from a coal seam to a borehole through a discoidal fracture is proposed. From the numerical analyses,the apparent radius of the discoidal fracture in this model is shown to be a good indication of the gas drainage ratio. In addition to this,an atempt to make fractures around a borehole using high velocity water jet(ca.lmm dia.,300-700atm., 100-200 1/min.) is introduced.

Research into cemented rock fill at Mount Isa Mines Limited since 1992 is described. The key mechanisms controlling segregation during stope filling with cemented rock fill are described and include the gravity flow mechanism which is described in detail. Examples are provided to demonstrate these mechanisms. Comparisons are made between Mount Isa MinesÆ cemented rock fill and slurry-based cemented rock fills. Recent backfill stability modelling using a three-dimensional finite element program is described.

The complexity of understanding the whole thickening process to achieve real performance improvements cannot be underestimated. The last significant change in feedwell design was more than 15 years ago with the introduction of self-dilution systems û firstly with OutotecÆs Autodil, followed by FLSmidthÆs E-Duc. Now, following many years of extensive in-house research, including close collaboration with AMIRA and the CSIRO, Outotec has launched the next generation Vane Feedwell. The Vane Feedwell has been globally patented and installed at various sites. This paper briefly outlines the feedwellÆs development using CFD modelling and its subsequent performance in a æreal lifeÆ site installation. Plant results of the first commercial Vane Feedwell, in a mineral sands application, are discussed. The Vane Feedwell was retrofitted so comparative data of pre- and post-installation is shown.

Agglomeration pre-treatment is a new process now being used here and overseas whereby problems arising with the heap leaching of gold and silver from materials containing critical amounts of fines or clay can be simply and cheaply overcome. The technique involves mixing the material with a suitable binder, commonly Portland Cement, and tumbling the moistened material to agglomerate the fines. These agglomerates are placed on the leach pad and cured prior to leaching. Test results, plant and operating cost data are presented. INTRODUCTION Heap leaching is a low capital and operating cost alternative to conven tional processing techniques for gold and silver extraction. A number of commercial-scale operations have recently started in the United States and the method is being considered for further deposits there and elsewhere.

"Check sampling programs were undertaken at Barrick Australia Pacific LimitedÆs Lawlers and Plutonic mine sites in Western Australia. The programs identified that the sampling, sample preparation and assaying protocols required modification to ensure acceptable precision (reproducibility) for each gold mineralisation type. These case studies describe the processes used to identify the: inconsistent precision different types of test work programs that were conducted to quantify the appropriateness for each mineralisation type steps used to modify the protocols.The type of test work conducted included: a duplicate series heterogeneity test for particulate gold mineralisation in the Lawlers gold deposit screen fire assay test work on duplicate subsamples for arsenopyrite associated mineralisation at the Plutonic gold deposit.Each test work program required a detailed scope specifying the sample selection criteria, sample preparation and assaying steps. The aim of the test work flow chart design was to ensure the assay precision between the different particle sizes or duplicate sample pairs could be measured and calculated. In the screen fire test work the true grade of the primary sample was calculated and compared against each subsample.A high quality assay laboratory was utilised for the test work. All samples were fire assayed and the gold grade determined using a gravimetric finish. The assay results were validated and the data was analysed using tables and graphs in spreadsheets. Following data analysis a modified sample preparation and assaying protocol for each mineralisation type was designed for use by the principal assay laboratories. Due to operational and regulatory practicalities, pit lakes will continue to be legacies of many open cut mining lease relinquishments. Unplanned or inappropriate management of these significant geographical features may lead to a short-term liability to all stakeholders during mining operations, or to ongoing liability to the local community and environment following lease relinquishment. However, the potential for pit lakes to provide benefit to companies, communities and the environment is frequently unrecognised and yet may be a vital contribution to the sustainability of the open cut mining industry. Improved remediation technologies are offering more avenues for pit lake end use than ever before, at the same time mining companies, local communities and regulatory authorities are also becoming more aware of the benefit these water resources have to offer. Sustainable pit lake management aims to better minimise short- and long-term pit lake liabilities, and yet also to maximise short- and long-term pit lake opportunities as well.

Photoelastic and equivalent material model ling techniques for studying stresses and defor- mations and modes of failure in geological and engineering structures are described. The appli- cation of these techniques to the solution of tunnelling design problems is outlined. Models may contain heterogeneous components to simulate geological and man-made structures and may be two- or three-dimensional. Prototype construc- tion procedures and time dependent behaviour may be modelled. Examples of recent model studies carried out for the design of underground railway tunnels are given. Development of photoelastic and equi- valent material modelling techniques and facili- ties at the CSIRO, Division of Applied Geomech- anics are described, including a biaxial and triaxial frame for testing large scale two and three dimensional equivalent material models and components of full scale prototype structures.

The copper deposits at Pernatty Lagoon are predominately djurleite-digenite bodies beneath the permanent water table, and chrysocolla-atacamite-malachite above the permanent water table. The minerals havebeen deposited as sheets, lobes, and pods in zones suggestive of permeability channels or permeability basius with respect to groundwater circulation.Pyrite is deposited in the form of framboids, which reflects its biogenic origin. Copper-iron sulphides deposit by replacement of pre-existent pyrite, and rarely by direct deposition. The latter mode of formation results in complex crustification bandings of chalcopyrite, bornite, sulphur rich bornites, digenite, and blue remaining covellites. The copper-iron sulphides appear to reequilibrate under constrained oxidation, resulting in an iron depletion and associated copper enrichment, the final product of which is a djurleite-digenite assemblage and associated with goethite. Where copper mineralization/ host rock relationships have rendered the rocks entirely impermeable to post ore groundwater movement, then the copper-iron sulphides are preserved as the ore assemblages.Minor and trace minerals observed include sphalerite, carrollite, galena, wittichenite, and possibly tetrahedrite in the primary ores. In the oxidized ores cllprite, tenorite, and trace brochantite have been found.

The South Ghorveh Batholith (SGB) and the Almoughlagh Batholith (AB) intruded the volcanosedimentary sequence of Songhor Series (Triassic-Jurassic), during the Oligo-Miocene orogenic phase. The granitoids of the AB belong chiefly to the quartz-syenite and syenogranite clans while those constituting the SGB can be generally characterised as quartz monzonite varying towards quartz monzodiorite, and diorite. Granitoids constituting both the batholiths are low in free quartz, and possess characteristics of the æmagnetite seriesÆ, mostly of I-type, metaluminous to marginally peraluminous and calk-alkaline type. Adjacent to them are located the magnetite skarn deposits of Baba Ali and Gelali. In the light of petrography, geochemistry, mineralogy and field geology investigations they could be classified as Fe-skarn and mainly bear characteristics of calcic skarn deposits.

Different mineral structures can act as mineral reservoirs for the immobilisation of toxic compounds. In the paper different mineral structures will be explained and their potential for incorporation of heavy metals and anions will be shown. The following structures will be explained (P÷llmann, 2007):apatites (incorporation of heavy metals, silicate apatites);ettringites (fixation of oxo-anions);layered double hydroxides (fixation of heavy metals, fixation of anions, fixation of organics, sorption materials); andmanganese oxides. Different possibilities of solid solution and incorporation in crystal structures will be explained and advantages of stable minerals be proved using experiences with real toxic wastes. In the process of thermal treatment the formation of primary mineral reservoirs will be shown. The precursor phases (similar to well known cement minerals) react in contact with water to form secondary mineral reservoirs (cement hydration mineral products). The formation condition of primary and secondary mineral reservoirs and their stabilities and incorporation possibilities will be shown. Examples for incorporation of various elements are given. Application for water clarification will be outlined.

The grinding characteristics of quartz which is normally associated with gold bearing ores in Kalgoorlie area was examined in a stainless steel laboratory size ball-mill in the presence of inorganic and organic surface active reagents. The cationic species considered were Fe3+, Cu2+ and Ca2+, and the anions were CO? and S2 as these are normally present during the process of grinding of gold ores in the region. The organic surfactants examined were K-amyl- xanthate, dodecylamine-hydrochloride and the Grinding Aid XFS-4272 manufactured by Dow Chemical The study was primarily based on an examination of the electrokinetic properties of quartz surface in the presence of the grinding reagents. Zeta potential at different reagent additions and pH values in the presence of individual reagents were examined and the corresponding grinding charcteristics determined. The Eocene-Oligocene porphyry belt of northern Chile contains the worldÆs largest accumulation of porphyry-related copper metal. Conflicting models exist regarding the relative importance of strike-slip and reverse faulting during the emplacement of the porphyry and epithermal systems, based on regional studies and also from work at the Chuquicamata deposit. In contrast, at the Collahuasi district, high sulfidation state copper-silver mineralisation was superimposed into the core of the Rosario copper-molybdenum porphyry deposits along normal faults during gravitational collapse of the Domeyko Cordillera. Exhumation of the porphyry environment occurred rapidly during this event, allowing near-surface epithermal mineralisation (<200 m paleodepth) to be juxtaposed into the potassic altered core of the porphyry deposit (estimated depth of formation: 1300 m) in the space of approximately one million years. Mass wasting after major episodes of tectonic uplift provides an effective method of hypogene upgrading of porphyry ores by high sulfidation mineralisation.
