In preparation of this Paper, the emphasis has been laid on the commercial rather than on the technical and scientific aspects of coal evaluation. It is intended to describe and comment on the principal factors which currently determine the selection and procurement of coking coal for the steel industry, and is not based on the results of any original research by the author. Evaluation of different coals for strictly thermal uses, for gas production or other chemical applications has not been attempted, and comparisons of coal with other fuels have been excluded: the paper is concerned only with coals for the production of blast furnace coke. The discussion is strongly related to, and illustrated by, British, and to some extent, other Western European practice, but it is hoped that the general conclusions may have a wider application.

The mine planning and operational aspects of applying Continuous Surface Miner (CSM) technology to Australian coal strip and open cut mines is investigated for both existing and planned deposits. CSM produc- tivity as a function of geomechanical properties, formation thickness, mechanical availability and in-pit physical constraints, are considered. Emf measurements on SE galvanic cell: SS; Ni-NiO I solid electrolyte/ZrO2 + CaO I [Pb + Bi]liq alloy; (PbO); SS were made in the temperature range 913-1034 K to determine the thermodynamic properties of oxygen dissolution in liquid lead. Bismuth alloys with bismuth in the dilute concentration range of 0 to 3.08 mass per cent and oxygen in the alloy varied by equilibrating the metallic system with a suitable (PbO) slag. Wagner's interaction parameter approach was used to calculate the ternary interaction parameter, eBiO at temperatures of 913, 953 and 993 and 1034 K and to observe the temperature dependence eBiO = 19 200/T - 17.454. Quasichemical fonnulation was employed to yield lnf BiO and reveal the effect of bismuth on oxygen in lead. The results obtained are discussed on the basis of theoretical models and the value of Wagner's energy parameter 'h' estimated to predict the results in a Pb-Bi-O system.

This paper describes four new families of collector products which are currently being introduced at the industrial level. A brief summary of the chemical basis behind each product family will be given. This is then followed by a selection of flotation examples which illustrate the more important use characteristics that have been observed to date. South Australian coals are all low in rank and generally poor in quality, with difficult combustion characteristics. This circumstance makes the selection of a fuel source for future power generation difficult, requiring careful study and detailed analysis of the various alternatives. Combustion characteristics can have a significant effect on plant design and costs, and need early attention in any exploration and evaluation programme. The physical location of the deposits, often remote from established infrastructure and centres of population, is also a major factor in the ultimate cost of power at the poirl use.

In recently completed road tunnel projects in Queensland, such as the Airport Link and the Clem7 tunnels, there is a smoke duct running along the roof of the carriageways to extract smoke in case of fire. In New South Wales, no road tunnels have a smoke duct. In the Melbourne City Link tunnels, there is a small smoke duct running along the roof. All of the tunnels are safe as claimed by the designers and authorities. However, there is significant cost associated with providing a full size smoke duct compared with no smoke duct. This paper is going to present a comparison of the road tunnel safety with a smoke duct and those without one from a risk perspective. It further discusses the cost-effectiveness of such provisions and whether similar levels of safety could be achieved without a smoke duct.CITATION:Lau, R, 2014. The Mt Leyshon Gold Mine is located 30 kilometres south of Charters Towers in Northern Queensland. The current open cut mine has been in operation since 1986. In 1992 a feasibility study was completed that recommended an increase in production to over 240 000 ounces of gold per year. This proposal required an upgrade of the processing plant to five million tonnes per year, and an enlarged mining fleet to provide additional ore, and to meet the increased waste removal requirements. The implementation of the mine expansion program during 1993 required the Life of Mine plan to be extensively revised. This required the assessment and management of potential risks associated with the mine design. The updated geological model using the 1992 drilling results along with the actual contract mining and processing costs were used to establish a series of nested optimised pit shells. The total and incremental quantities and costs were then analysed to determine a suitable pit perimeter. The pit and phase plans were then created and used to devise a staged development plan. The block layout plans for each bench were then established from which a detailed life of mine production schedule was created.

The paper describes the detailed hydrogeological studies carried out prior to the sinking of twin shafts at British Coal's new mine at Asfordby, Leicestershire, UK. The test methods for assessing potential groundwater inflows to the shafts are discussed and details are given of the ground freezing scheme employed through the major aquifer zone in the Sherwood Sandstone at a depth of 375 metres. During shaft sinking pressure recovery tests were carried out to further assess potential inflows and the results are compared with those from the surface tests prior to sinking.

Overburden removal, mining and reclamation are now accepted as the basic operational steps involved in the winning of coal by open cut methods. To attain the lowest operational cost, the recontouring and revegetation of spoilpiles must be planned concurrently with the planning of overburden removal and mining. The earthworks associated with reclamation work on spoilpiles often account for 75 - 90 per cent of total reclamation costs. Experience at Callide Mine has shown that the way that spoilpiles are contoured does influence water retention and can reduce erosion from rainfall run-off. However, provided the recontoured slopes meet'Mines Department specifications, the quality of reclamation work is judged not by the quality of the earthworks but by the plant regrowth on the reshaped surface. Thus it is the quality of the revegetation which is of prime importance. For vegetation to be successful, time must be spent on planned research into methods of overcoming plant nutrient deficiencies and selection of suitable grass and tree species. Many parameters are important when considering the performance of a concentrator. These include metallurgical performance, such as throughput, metal recovery and final concentrate grade and operating costs, such as power consumption, water usage, reagents and spare parts. In most operations the objective is to maximise metallurgical performance and minimise operating costs, ideally without a large investment in new capital items. A number of projects have been carried out at Newcrest MiningÆs Cadia Valley Operations (CVO) with the aim of improving metallurgical performance and minimising operating costs. This paper focuses on the installation of newly designed flotation mechanisms in various cells in the Cadia flotation circuit and describes the effect these changes had on performance and operating costs.

This paper discusses the implementation of an underground rail haulage system during a major expansion of the Olympic Dam mine in 1998. The factors affecting the selection of rail haulage are discussed and details are provided on the rail system, which is designed to transport more than 10.5 million tonnes per annum (Mtpa). The reliability of the system during commissioning is discussed, including the decision to manufacture a ædummyÆ locomotive in order to keep the system operational. Finally, reliability improvements made both during and after commissioning are discussed with comments provided on the effectiveness of the system as it operates today.

Difficult ground conditions have plagued the underground operations at Mount Windarra since mining started in 1974.The ore at Mount Windarra consists of seven vertically dipping, sub vertically plunging ore shoots. The ore zone in which the shoots lie is characterised by moderate to heavy cleavage and the presence of serpentanite. The ore is known to extend to 1100 metres below surface.Long hole open stoping under cover of backfill has been used as the primary mining method at the mine, but its poor performance brought the mine near to closure in 1984. The mine had been closed from 1979 to 1980.

Selective open pit mining for gold has been in progress at Harbour Lights since the onset of mining in March 1985. Selective mining techniques used are similar to those in other recently opened gold mines in Western Australia. However certain practices have been introduced to accommodate the irregular distribution of mineralisation and comparatively high mill tonnage throughput. These include selective mining with large bucket excavators, sequential waste stripping - ore mining normal to the strike of the orebody and sample line preparation and ripping on bench floors. Application of these selective mining practices at Harbour Lights enables the operation to maintain delivery of approximately forty by 50-tonne truck loads of ore to the mill crusher everyday, with limited rehandling of material through ore stockpiles.

The design and selection of components for belt conveyors is a well known procedure and many handbooks, catalogues and design manuals offer a wide range of detailed information which can be applied to most of the known conveyor problems. The aim of this paper, however, is to investigate the various methods of conveyor drive configurations, and incorporate the latest technical achievements in the control systems, particularly for high capacity conveyor systems carrying ore from pit to processing plants where the lowest maintenance, operating and initial costs are of major importance. Past experience has proven that multi pulley drives can reduce initial capital cost of a conveyor; this leads to the need for better torque control during startup, running, stopping and load sharing. Many methods of torque control are available and have been used in the past. All types have their advantages and disadvantages and must be considered when designing a conveyor or conveyor system. However the recently developed solid state electronic soft start controls utilising AC squirrel cage induction motors are gaining acceptance, especially for a conveyor system where the same control and logic system can be used to transmit startup commands to more than one

Designing coal pillars to provide resistance against overburden loads has long been an aim of rock mechanics engineers. The need for accurate pillar strength models has become.more urgent as greater overburdens are encountered and pillar sizes grow larger. Current pillar design models differ widely in their predictions of the trend in pillar strength with increasing pillar width- to-height ratio. The goal of this paper is to evaluate current pillar strength theories, using a comprehensive data base of stress measurements from coal pillars. The stress measurements indicate that coal pillars maintain relatively high stresses near the ribline, and that the stress gradient within the yield zone can be approximated as a straight line. Several problems are identified for further research, including calibration procedures for different types of stress cells, strain softening behavior in the yield zone, and measurement of stresses in the cores of very wide pillars.

Artisanal and small-scale gold mining (ASSM) offers lucrative employment opportunities to the locals of most developing countries. The major drawback of ASSM is its adverse impacts on the environment resulting from improper mining and processing techniques. Papua New Guinea (PNG) has very active ASSM activities. The artisanal and small-scale gold mining in PNG provide employment at local and national levels and the sector is an important source for inflow of foreign exchange into rural communities. However, small-scale mining activities are associated with sensitive health and environmental issues. The process of recovering gold by retorting and heating the amalgam over an open fire is a dangerous health practice. This paper discusses artisanal and small-scale gold mining operations in PNG and their impacts on the local environment.
