Standard petrographic profiles for many Permian seams from New South Wales and Queensland have been drawn up. The standard profiles of seams of the same age and from one or more coalfields were used to compile an idealized or type seam sequence for those coals in which more than half the seam profiles were similar to one another. A marked similarity existed between at least 7 of the 10 type seam sequences formed. The configurations of the vitrite-plus-clarite contents of the plies of 95 per cent of the seams could be formed from different arrangements of 3 basic sequences: (i) a two-ply sequence with a lower vitrite-rich and an upper vitrite-poor ply; (ii) a two-ply sequence with a lower vitrite-poor and an upper vitrite-rich ply; and (iii) a four-ply sequence of 3 plies with vitrite-plus- clarite decreasing upwards, terminating in a vitrite- rich ply. The third basic sequence was very similar to a succession described for some British Carboniferous coals. Eighty per cent of the Australian Permian coal seams studied began with the first (i) basic type of sequence and are interpreted as originating in peat- forming areas which became progressively drier. More than half the seams were formed in an area with a stable depositional surface level which was subject to oscillations of small amplitude.. Many (30%) were formed in an area with a steadily rising depositional surface level.

Prediction of rock cuttability by various excavation machines such as tunnel boring machines, road headers, rippers, picks, roller disc cutters, excavators, etc is of major concern to both civil and mining engineers and rock mechanics. In principle, the design of a rock cutting tool is based on achieving maximum excavation with minimum input energy, minimum applied force, minimum equipment weight and volume and, more importantly, minimum tool wear. When a rock material is indented by the force of a cutting tool and then unloaded several material zones form underneath and around the tool. As the tool moves into the rock the volume of its associated rock cavity (ie volume of displaced rock) expands and depending on the indenter's shape various phenomena may occur. Immediately beneath the tool a small zone in which the stress state is more or less hydrostatic, is formed which is underlain by an inelastic, or damaged, material zone. Both size and shape of this damaged zone control the magnitude of the indentation force and the chip formation mechanism during unloading. The rock is unable to store the whole strain energy induced by the tool and consequently the extra energy is expended either in forming new fracture surfaces and/or in plastic deformation in the damaged zone. Therefore, it is not surprising to see that both perfect-elastic and rigid-plastic constitutive models are not generally suitable for modelling indentation of rocks. In contrast elastoplastic constitutive models are more appropriate as they can include both elastic and plastic deformations (Kral et al, 1993). Elastic solutions for several half-space indentation problems can be found in most text books on elasticity and in particular in Timoshenko and Goodier (1951), Sneddon, (1951), Poulos and Davis (1974) and Johnson (1985a). If a failure criterion, eg the Mohr-Coulomb failure criterion, is applied to delimit elastic solutions for indentation problems, a lower bound limit of the applied indentation force (for a given indentation depth) can be estimated. It may be noted that elastic analyses, without any delimiting failure criteria, normally overestimate the indentation force. Plastic solutions for a few indentation problems may be found in Hill (1950), Johnson, (1985a) and Alehossein et al (1992). When analysing the behaviour of indented rocks the choice of an appropriate constitutive model describing effectively the behaviour of the rock at various stages and phases during indentation is a challenging issue. Several questions need to be answered before starting an effective analysis. The first question is of course: Which one of these is more appropriate for modelling zones underneath and around a cutter, elasticity or plasticity theory, continuum damage mechanics or fracture mechanics, and what is the bridging link between these various theories? Which mode is more dominant in fracturing rock, tensile or shear mode? What governs the mechanism of chip formation? What is the function, shape and the behaviour of the pulverised zone that forms just underneath a cutter? Is the hydrostatic stress state assumption reasonable for this zone? How does the rock change during the absorption and dissipation of the input energy and how does the indentation energy vary with rock type and depth of penetration? How can we model the damaged zone under the indenter? Furthermore does a plastic material form beneath the pulverised zone? When and how do radial and ring cracks form around and under an indenter?

The low price of nickel which has prevailed since 1982 has dictated that unit production costs must be minimised. Early in the crisis, a decision was made within Western Mining Corporation to reduce unit costs by increased rates of production, not by a significant reduction in manpower. This paper details developments which have taken place at Kalgoorlie Nickel Smelter to enable the higher production rates to be achieved, or to increase energy efficiency. It is significant that most developments were achieved without the need for capital expenditure.

Toppling failure of a jointed rock slope was studied by using the distinct lattice spring model (DLSM). Compared with the classical discrete element model, the DLSM has the advantages of free calibration of micro-mechanical parameters and easy to represent discontinuities, and is more computationally efficient. In this work, the DLSM was used to investigate the toppling failure of jointed rock slopes. The numerical simulation was verified against experimental data from a centrifuge model test on a jointed rock slope. Both the horizontal deformations and failure pattern observed in the centrifuge test were reasonably reproduced using the DLSM. Then, the mechanism of the flexural toppling failure was studied numerically by using a parameter analysis. Anglo American has been researching the potential benefits of inter-particle comminution techniques for several years. Inter-particle comminution has additional benefits in terms of milling circuit performance such as energy consumption and stability. This paper focuses on the flotation benefits. Inter-particle comminution leads to selective breakage, mineralogical analysis has shown that this leads to improved liberation of the valuable minerals. In addition to selective breakage, the relatively short residence time experienced in typical inter-particle comminution machines allows more efficient classification which contributes to a æsharperÆ product size distribution. The effect of particle size in flotation has been well documented in literature. In general, it is has been shown that there is an optimal particle size range for flotation, and that both above and below this range, flotation recovery is adversely affected. Results show that the narrow size distribution which results from inter-particle comminution improves flotation recovery. Furthermore, the absence of excessive fine gangue material which typically results from conventional fine (-75 ¦m) milling of talcaceous ores, can lead to 100 per cent savings in depressant consumption when such ores are subjected to inter-particle comminution. To-date, this technology has been evaluated on more than ten ores. This paper will focus on one set of results which demonstrates a number of common differences that exist between material that has been milled conventionally and using inter-particle comminution technologies, with emphasis on what the impact of these differences is on flotation performance. A pilot scale (200 kg/h) vertical roller mill (VRM) was used to produce the material, and the results shown will describe conventional laboratory batch, locked cycle and pilot plant flotation testwork.

Over the past ten years, the mining industry has witnessed the introduction of a new and innovative mine filling technique known as paste fill, which consists of placing full stream tailings with small amounts of binder and water into underground stopes. Paste fill has benefits over traditional backfill methods, such as higher solids contents than hydraulic fill and easier transportation than rock fill. From a geotechnical perspective, the behaviour of very fine material in a fully saturated state can be complex, particularly when binder is added. Previously, there has been no rigorous solution to understanding the paste fill deposition process, resulting in uncertainty regarding critical aspects such as barricade load calculations. This uncertainty has the obvious consequences of potential barricade failures (including at least 12 over the past four years), and for many operations attempts to deal with this uncertainty has led to excessively conservative filling schedules, restricting production. This paper presents an application of Minefill-2D, the first rigorous model capable of representing the paste fill deposition process. The model couples the processes of material accretion, consolidation and cement hydration to calculate the distribution of stress around a stope (including the total stress applied to barricade structures) during filling. Minefill-2D is a finite element numerical program, which has been verified using laboratory element tests, centrifuge tests and in situ measurements (Helinski, 2008). The authors present a sensitivity analysis, carried out using the model, to demonstrate some of the critical and less critical aspects relating to paste backfill deposition. The results of this sensitivity analysis are used to devise a fill management strategy that can be utilised to minimise the risk of barricade failures and maximise fill rates where appropriate.

The cylinder test allows us to determine the expansion of a copper cylinder by the detonation of an explosive charge inside. This test, originally designed for military explosives, has been adapted for industrial explosives with non-ideal behaviour. From data obtained with this test and known physical relationships, an analytical procedure has been developed to calculate the Jones-Wilkins-Lee (JWL) equation of state parameters for five ammonium nitrate/fuel oil (ANFO) and six emulsion-type explosives. A new radial wall expansion function is proposed considering a non-zero initial velocity with the consequent positive Gurney energy at unit relative volume. A set of equations is established to determine the JWL parameters, three of them obtained at the Chapman-Jouguet (CJ) point and the other three at different relative volumes. These equations, along with some constraints to ensure a physically sound solution, are solved for the JWL parameters by a non-linear least squares scheme. A 2D Lagrangian axisymmetric finite elements (FE) numerical model is developed for each tested explosive to validate the analytical results, in terms of expansion histories, with good agreement. German coal mining suffers from rock temperatures up to 600C which are the same as in South Africa at 3000 - 4000 m of depth. Therefore cooling plants have increased in the last decade and today a cooling power of nearly 200 MW is installed in the total Ruhr District. Cooling a mine is a little bit different from cooling a bottle of beer in a refrigerator in the kitchen because the heat taken from the bottle of beer is delivered to the kitchen some centimetres away; in mining the cooling-problem is more difficult: here the bottle of beer corresponds to the airflow at the coal face and the kitchen to the surface, So it is necessary to transport the heat or the "coldness" a long distance. In the address by Ieuan Morris some systems for transporting heat from the coalface to the evaporator of the cooling machine and further from the condenser of the machine to a return airflow were described. The following is a short idea of the way this problem is treated in Germany.

Mining and treatment of gold ore in the Ashanti region at Obuasi, Ghana has been continuous for more than 100 years. Earlier production from this world class deposit can be traced far into the history of West Africa's gold trade. As part of a general development and expansion program, Ashanti Goldfields Corporation (Ghana) recently undertook a program to heap leach oxidized near surface ore. Kappes, Cassiday & Associates was given a major role in the design, equipment supply, installation and start-up management of the 3000 tonne/day heap leach. Unusual conditions included a high annual rainfall and an ore which could be characterized as a soft, decomposed, water saturated schist. Production began in March 1990. Startup problems and their solutions are discussed.

The engineering geological mapping of Metropolitan Area of Jopo Pessoa in the littoral zone of the Parafba State, northeast of Brazil, made possible the ambient characterisation for space using and its implications on the environmental resources. This region comes lately denoting an accented industrial growth and this work would help future projects of urban planning, distinguished by quick ground occupations for residential, industrial installations, farming, beyond mineral extractions. The mineral sector supplies material and substance demanded by industry and civil constructions, like as clay deposits, sands, calcareous rocks and mineral water. Many companies working there do not have the permission or inspection of ambient agencies for planned extractions of mineral resources. The consequences of this activity pass for the low profit of the reserves, bad uses of the sources, ground degradation, vegetation suppressions and physical impacts on landscapes, beyond noises and vibrations. These activities have causing accelerated alterations and transformations in the environment, compromising the sustainable development. It thus becomes clear that urgent solutions must be find to solve the problems with human interferences by closer inspection and management for disciplined use of its natural resources.

The interfaces between the Broken Hill ore lenses and the enclosing wallrocks are, on a broad scale, parallel to metamorphic layering in the wallrock gneisses and quartzites. In detail, however, the concordant contacts are interrupted by piercement structures, formed by plastic injection of ore into the wallrocks during metamorphism.These discordant bodies vary from minor projections measuring less than I m long, to major ore shoots ("droppers") as much as 60 m long. The intrusive bodies consist of fragmented ore and wallrock in amatrix of recrystallised sulphides. Wallrock fragments have been altered to manganese-rich and calcium-rich mineral assemblages. The injected ore is enriched in sulphides compared with the parent ore, and there has been enrichment in a number of minor elements.Piercement structures formed during the waning phase of high grade metamorphism, when incompetent ore was injected plastically under pressure into the wallrocks, particularly at fold crests. Adjacent to the "droppers", retrograde schists developed as a result of shearing along the ore-wallrock interface.

Improvements in technology do not necessarily lead to higher profits: the benefit of lower costs can be captured by coal buyers, governments and workforce rather than by the colliery operators. The economic impact of longwall mining in Australia has been critically assessed to provide lessons for the future. For a variety of reasons, companies investing in longwall equipment in the past five years have generally not achieved an adequate return on the funds invested. The effect of technological innovation must be examined in the light of competitive forces operating in the market. Projections of cost reduction trends in the coal industry have been applied to a world cost model to provide a picture of the coal industry in the year 2000.

The Siana gold-silver deposit of Surigao del Norte, Mindanao, Philippines is perhaps one of the most complex in the world, being related to an ancient suture zone known as the Philippine Fault. Early accounts described the deposit as epithermal, consisting of an upper limestone replacement orebody and a lower vein type deposit hosted in andesite. Recent field and laboratory studies, in correlation with the latest findings on the archipelago's tectonic evolution, however, led to the present interpretation of the Siana ore deposit's origin as involving both syngenetic and epigenetic processes, with limestone breccia, similar to the Cow Head Breccia of Newfoundland, as the principal host to mineralization.

Several types of drainage structure providecost-effective environmental controls for water supply to Charters Towers and its mining industry. Drainage groves maintain bank-levee, channel, pool, and spring structures. Failure of drainage structures leads to anoxic fermentation of channel fill releasing residues, such as arsenic, which would otherwise pass harmlesly by fixed on sedimentary particles.Experiments along drainage structures indicate that productive agroforestry could be integrated with expeditious development of groves to cope with environmental change.

Technical applications of computers within the coal industry are expanding rapidly with an increase in the number of users and user locations. Collinsville Coal Company Pty Ltd is an example of a remote and growing user company which has a Telecom link to MIM's ICL mainframe computer in Brisbane. The Planning Department is one of the technical user departments at Collinsville, with a variety of VDU, plotting and screen graphics hardware supported by the MIM Computing network. Current applications involve the storage, retrieval and manipulation of borehole information, plan and map production, volume calculations from survey data and mine ventilation modelling for underground Operations.

Many metallurgical beneficiation and primary concentrating processes rely upon discrimination of products from gangue based on particulate density of the different minerals and combinations of minerals in an ore. The basic definition of density is simple, but the apparent density that minerals exhibit when in the environment of commercial densimetric separation processes is more complex and is ill-defined. Measurement of the apparent density displayed by minerals in their separation situation is essential if modelling of plant performance is to be meaningful or when comparison of an existing operation with a æperfectÆ separation constitutes a part of an audit or of a plant control function. Seven methods of dividing ore samples into discreet density fractions are examined and criticised in this paper. The shortcomings, difficulties and potential errors arising from the use of each method are evaluated. Most of the techniques described have been used by the author and generally their faults are understood and the resultant first-hand experience has been used to overcome these faults. A simple new computer-assisted technique for developing meaningful densimetric data is described.

The electrolytic recovery of metals from solution requires an understanding of the characteristics of the particular system employed, and the current efficiency and morphology of the deposit are influenced by such factors as cell design, metal ion and supporting ion concentration, acid concentration, temperature, impurity levels and cell design. The electrolytic deposition of both cadmium and silver present individual difficulties, and special cell designs are used for each of these metals. It was found that cadmium deposition was plate-like at lower cadmium concentrations, and at higher current densities. The presence of zinc in the electrolyte promoted nodular growth. Current efficiency remained high even at 50C in contrast to published information. Silver deposition morphology was relatively unaffected by changes in silver concentration, pH and current density. Current efficiency was reduced as temperature was increased.

Leichhardt Colliery is developed for underground mining of coal seams at depths exceeding 280 m. Investigations of the area were conducted in phases, each designed to delineate seam characteristics more accurately and to indicate with increasing precision the nature of local geological features and the ranges of those coal properties susceptible to variation. The investigational campaign is described phase by phase summarizing evaluation of the area at the conclusion of each phase. Predictions of geological conditions likely to influence engineering planning are contrasted with actual conditions observed during trial mining.

Four field test plots were constructed in 1998 on a sloped waste rock surface at the Myra Falls Operations of Boliden Westmin (Canada) Limited to evaluate hydraulic performance of alternate cover system designs. The field test plot cover systems were designed to control oxygen ingress and water infiltration to the underlying waste rock while providing a medium for a grass and legume vegetation cover. The test plots consisted of a bare waste rock surface (control plot), and three additional plots consisting of native compacted till placed directly on the waste rock surface, overlain by non-compacted till. Two of the test plots included a compacted till layer ameliorated with flyash and bentonite, respectively, to improve moisture retention and reduce permeability. The third test plot consisted of a compacted layer of native till overlain by non-compacted till. A performance monitoring system was installed in each test plot to evaluate net percolation and oxygen ingress to the underlying waste rock. In addition, each test plot has profiles of matric suction, water content, and temperature sensors installed at up-slope and down slope locations. A review of four years of monitoring data shows that the compacted till/bentonite cover system has been most successful in limiting the infiltration of meteoric waters and oxygen ingress to the underlying waste rock material. The compacted till/flyash and compacted till cover systems have produced similar net percolation results and neither have functioned well in maintaining an oxygen ingress layer throughout the year. The amelioration of bentonite with till to produce a compacted barrier layer shows promise in reducing water and oxygen ingress at the MFO site, while the incorporation of flyash with the till did not result in a significant increase in performance. The field performance data clearly demonstrates the need for developing field trials prior to full-scale construction, as opposed to relying solely on an un-calibrated numerical modelling to design the full-scale cover system.
