The paper describes the progress made in the last decade with the introduction of comprehensive monitoring of the mine atmosphere into U.K. collieries. Brief descriptions are given of the various portable and fixed point instruments which have been developed for this purpose and the methods available for transmission of information to the surface are also discussed. The paper also outlines some of the research work being carried out both in the laboratory and underground on the development of alternative methods of fire detection. Some of the results from this work are illustrated and discussed.

The Proterozoic iron oxide related Au-Cu-Bi (Tenant Creek style') deposits at Tennant Creek can be classified as syntectonic polymetallic hydrothermal replacement type mineralisation. The production of stabilised backfill at mine sites commonly uses Portland cement as the binder. Calcined gypsum has cementing properties and is cheaper to produce than cement. This paper discusses the strength of fills stabilised with calcined gypsum. Laboratory tests were carried out on specimens prepared from tailings obtained from four different sites to allow for the wide variety of tailings found in practice. The results show that the gypsum-based fills can achieve a strength of I MPa using around two and a half to four times the corresponding amount of cement.

In this paper the effect of humic substances (natural surfactants), electrolytes and solid particles on bubble coalescence, and as a consequence on froth stability, have been investigated. In this study two bubbles of equal size were formed and forced to collide using a novel experimental apparatus. The interactions were recorded by a high-speed camera, the images of which helped to determine the coalescence frequency and the coalescence time, as well as the mechanisms of the interactions. Two types of humic substances were used, along with three different electrolytes. Humic substances appeared to have a considerable effect on bubble coalescence, while the effect of electrolytes was minimal. Moderate and high hydrophobic glass spheres were used between two bubbles. Very hydrophobic spheres promoted fast bubble coalescence, while moderate hydrophobic spheres had no effect. Data of coalescence frequency and time is presented, as well as images of the coalescence events. The coalescence frequency was used to validate a parameter, Pf, known as the film failure frequency, used in a simulation model to predict foam height in a gas-sparged vessel. Predictions determined using Pf were then validated by experimentation.

Converter slag assaying 3.7 per cent Cu is produced by Mount Isa copper smelter at a rate of up to 180 000 tonnes per annum.Priority is given to the processing of ore, however concentrator capacity periodically exceeds that of the mine and the opportunity is taken to treat converter slag. It is processed in batch campaigns, typically through the Copper Concentrator, but the Hilton Concentrator has also been used. Slag and ore are kept as separate as possible, since each has an adverse effect on the flotation performance of the other.

CSIRO staff and University of Melbourne staff and students collaborated in an intense programme of investigation on the CSIRO 50 kg Sirosmelt pilot plant.In two days of operation copper matte converting and zinc slag fuming trials were performed, whilst investigation of the process dynamics and process chemistry was carried out. This exercise is an example of the techniques available for process evaluation, which can rapidly advance the understanding of pyrometallurgical operations by use of a team approach covering a wide range of experiments.

"One of the key drivers of geometallurgy is to define the ore characteristics and their variability to build a geometallurgical model. The inclusion of waste rock properties and their variability is just as important, given that the generation of acid rock drainage (ARD) poses one of the most significant environmental challenges facing the mining industry. Formed through the oxidation of sulfide minerals in the presence of oxygen and water, ARD generation is exacerbated through the regeneration of lixiviates by naturally occurring iron- and sulfur-oxidising micro-organisms. In order to manage the potential risk of ARD pollution, timely, accurate, reliable and robust characterisation and prediction of the ARD potential of waste material is critical from an early stage in the mining process.This study demonstrates the use of the biokinetic-accelerated weathering test developed at the University of Cape Town to characterise the ARD potentials of gold waste rock samples under microbial conditions. These tests are performed in conjunction with standard characterisation tests to provide an indication of the potential for ARD generation under both chemical and biological conditions. Results provided information regarding the relative rates of acid neutralisation and acid generation, with the contribution of specific minerals to the observed behaviour considered through use of a detailed mineralogical assessment. This paper will first discuss the fundamental requirements for reliable discharge of backfill by gravity alone at high per cent solids. This discussion will include brief mention of the underlying principles of saturated solids flow contrasted to that of stirred tank or dilute discharge systems. Here the need to possess full knowledge of the flow properties of the stored material will be highlighted. In addition proper account must be made of the silo overflow weir and settling capacity to match plant throughput. Here opportunity will be taken to highlight the complexity of this multi-phase flow situation as well as the general yet paramount requirements for reliable solids flow. It will be shown that by proper attention to the multi-phase considerations gravity discharge of slurries as a consolidated bed with minimal water content is possible. Such high solids discharge results in greatly reduced demand for process water. In addition pumping costs are reduced as is the delay time associated with the mine drainage operation. Confirmation of successful applications will be highlighted by reference to several recent case studies. In the concluding phase mention will be made of the key yet very simple and effective operation techniques which enhance reliable discharge. The simplicity and reliability of properly designed gravity discharge backfill tank systems suggests increased application of this technology by the mining industry.

Field and laboratory data combined with computational modelling have been used to predict the pit water quality for the Highway Reward mine. Open pit mining of the Highway Reward copper-gold deposit has produced a final mining void with a diameter of 600 m and a depth of 280 m. This void will be left to fill with ground and surface water once pumping of pit water ceases. Several leaching tables were constructed to simulate weathering reactions and surface water run-off in the major pit wall units during a 200-day leaching experiment. The United States has more than 45 billion tons of economic coal reserves in seams above 10 feet thick and current underground production from thick seams represent less than three per cent of the total production. A tripling of underground production from thick seams is necessary within the next 10 years to meet U.S. coal production demands. An analysis of underground accident and production data is presented in the paper. A study of accident and injury distribution in different coal seam heights in the eastern and western part of the United States in seams ranging in thicknesses from 5 to 15 feet indicates that the seam thicknesses do not produce adverse impact on underground injury incidence. Accidents associated with roof falls and haulage account for about 70 per cent of underground mining injuries.

Dimension stone is the term generally given to rock used in building construction. During early European history in Otago, locally available dimension stone products were easily obtained. Crude rock shelters built on river banks with schist rock within Central Otago soon gave way to more established and sophisticated permanent homesteads constructed with the same materials. Victorian architectural achievement is celebrated in Otago with many fine bluestone block buildings. When the University Council decided to build substantially in stone, it narrowly escaped disaster. It was well known at the time that brick in Dunedin was of an inferior quality and that it soon wasted. Rev Dr Stuart said before the 1879 Commission that æthe Council had some old-world notions and liked to have the University with some architectural styleÆ. Contemporary utilisation of dimension stone is generally restricted by expense to a simple veneer. Stone products produced from Otago quarries have found ready markets in other areas in New Zealand , particularly prior to the share market crash in 1987.

For a number of years, Alcoa World Alumina Australia (Alcoa) has been investigating opportunities to produce economically viable products from bauxite residues. Three of these potential products are described here, being Red Sand, ALKALOAM« and REDLIMETM.Red Sand has a nominal particle size of +100 micron and is physically little different to crushed bauxite from which it is derived. In AlcoaÆs Western Australian refineries, Red Sand constitutes up to half of the residue going to impoundment areas. Initial testing indicates that this sand could be processed to provide an acceptable general landfill material, a construction back fill or a material suitable for road base construction. ALKALOAM« is the fine-grained residue often referred to as red mud. A great deal of work has been done to show the benefits of adding this material to sandy soils, which are common in coastal regions of WA. ALKALOAM« has properties that can elevate the pH of the acidic soils and also retain phosphorous, reducing overall fertiliser use and protecting sensitive waterways. REDLIMETM is a by-product of the refining process. This material has a high acid neutralising value. REDLIMETM could be more effective at pH control than most available products because of the fine particle size and sodium carbonate that remains with the product.

In spite of the efforts done in the past to implement in Codelco best practice guidelines and standards on several important sampling, assaying and variability issues, many people, particularly top managers and operators, are still not aware of the relevance of the use of the principles and practice of geostatistics, sampling theory, analytical chemistry and the understanding of processes variability from rock to cathodes. As a result, an important challenge for the sampling community is to find out the causes of this lack of awareness and to develop communication skills to influence the organisation, particularly the top management level. This situation is not affecting only Codelco; it is a common characteristic of the copper mining industry. The main cause is cultural. Judeo-Christian and occidental sciences are deterministic. This implies a disregard of process variation and the assumption that homogeneity is omnipresent. Another important aspect of the cultural challenge is education. Education is the most efficient way to transfer a system of ideas, traditions and practices. To implement proper courses of sampling theory and geostatistics and support to multidisciplinary education at universities, mining companies will improve teamwork between geologists, mining engineers, metallurgists and chemists. The improvements will imply a more sustainable and efficient mining business.

The present study was carried out to explore the possible separate recovery of iron and phosphorus (as gas) from BOF slag using graphite crucibles or graphite powders in the presence of a tin bath. The last is consider- ed to enhance the activity of phosphorus in iron reduced from slag or not to absorb the phosphorus vapour readily. When the slag was reduced in a graphite crucible in contact with a tin bath, the phosphorus reduced from the slag was carried away in CO explosively generated by the reduc- tion of iron oxide. When graphite powder was used as the reductant instead, 78% of the phosphorus was removed from slag, only 3% of which was absorb- ed into the tin bath. The rest left the system as gas. Gaseous dephosphorization depends on the area of contact between slag and reductant as cll n.u the amount of the latter. the reduction behaviour was directly observed, using an X ray transmission technique, to conlirm the reaction mechanism.

One of the primary objectives when optimising a mining complex is to maximise its value for the primary stakeholders. In order to achieve this objective, it is necessary to holistically optimise all aspects of the mining complex, including decisions of when to extract materials from the available sources, how to blend or stockpile these materials and how to best use the available processing streams to satisfy customer demand. Existing methods for global, or holistic, optimisation ignore the compounded effects that risk has on the performance of a mining complex. Over the past decade, several stochastic optimisation approaches have been proposed to integrate various forms of uncertainty into the open pit mine design and production scheduling. These methods, however, are limited in their ability to simultaneously optimise the production schedules for the portfolio of mines, material destination policies, the use of the available processing streams and the various products that are produced at each location of the mining complex.This paper aims to discuss a new method for the global optimisation of open pit mining complexes with geological uncertainty. The proposed generalised methodology is capable of modelling and holistically optimising mining complexes, including aspects related to production scheduling, blending, stockpiling and non-linear interactions that often occur in practice, but are over-simplified in existing models. Two case studies are discussed to highlight the need for these complex, stochastic optimisers. First, a case study for a nickel laterite blending operation highlights the need to integrate geological uncertainty into the optimisation in order to ensure product quality constraints are respected. To determine whether 130 felt earth tremors around Edwinstowe, Nottinghamshire U.M, which also experienced severe surface fissuring, were caused by coal extraction, a surface seismometer array was established around Thoresby Colliery. Over the next year, 785 microseismic events were detected. The spatio- temporal seismicity patterns are clearly associated with the commencement, continuing extraction and closure of faces. Of particular note are events which locate at the surface and appear to be related to the active fissuring. Events occur within days of commencement of production and cease when production finishes, with good correlation between face advance and hypocentral position. Naturally occurring microseismic events have also been detected up to 1 km ahead of active longwall faces in the Midlands using triaxial geophone packages grouted into the seam together with a surface seismometer in the top of the borehole. The quality of these data were very high and guided waves can clearly be seen with the dispersive characteristics associated with seam waves. In one experiment more than 2000 events were detected in only two days of monitoring even in a relatively noisy surface environment. This paper demonstrates how very accurate locations (5 10 metres) can be generated using three-component digital data from only one borehole. The surface seismometer and the borehole P-wave onset can give extra precision for the height of the event relative to the seam. The event distributions give a dynamic, three-dimensional image of the developing patterns of fracturing above, below and ahead of the longwall face with important implications for roof control, subsidence prediction and gas Migration.

In the processing of refractory gold-bearing sulfides, pressure oxidation (POX) is commonly known for its role in liberating the gold in solid-solution via oxidation of the sulfide occlusions. For deposits that contain arsenic-bearing species including arsenian pyrite and arsenopyrite, POX serves an important secondary function in the fixation of arsenic, via the hydrothermal precipitation of stable arsenates such as scorodite and basic ferric arsenate sulfate (BFAS). There have been various investigations on the impact of different POX conditions on arsenic precipitation and the stability of the formed phases, but less is known about the changes to the arsenic carrier that occur in the curing stage, which follows directly from POX. The primary function of curing is to coax the dissolution of sulfates to reduce lime consumptions during cyanide leaching, and the slurry is kept at elevated temperatures near 100°C to achieve this. While the arsenic-bearing phases are expected to undergo transformation during this stage, there has thus far been limited experimental evidence. In this study, the effect of curing time and curing temperature on the arsenic-bearing species and arsenic deportment in the POX product has been investigated. Leaching of the curing products was also conducted to examine the stability of the arsenic species in the solid precipitates.

During longwall mining, the ability to reliably estimate the height of longwall mining-induced fractures is critically important in order to effectively manage mining-induced water inflows and aquifer interference. The extent of mining-induced subsurface deformation, fracture, surface subsidence and aquifer interference is largely controlled by local lithological conditions, mining methods and mine layouts. Therefore for the purpose of quantifying mining impacts it is imperative to incorporate the local geology and mine plan parameters in a mine scale model. Two different numerical models based on 3D continuum (Finite Element Method) and 2D discrete (Discrete element method) domains, respectively, are developed to incorporate the mine site parameters of a study site in Australia. Both the models are calibrated and validated with measured mine data. The continuum numerical modelling method is used to investigate the change in permeability of the overburden strata due to underground extraction considering the full 3D nature of geology and mine layout. The discrete element modelling method is used to simulate the initiation and propagation of fractures, allowing the caving of overburden strata to be represented in a realistic manner, and the permeability enhancement of the strata overlying the goaf to be calculated from first principles. Permeability enhancement in the discrete element model is a direct function of the fractures induced in the deformation/caving process; fracture location, extent, aperture and connectedness. From the numerical modelling under the simulated condition for the mine studied here, it is predicted that the permeability of the caving zone from the goaf to five times the mining height increases by almost six orders of magnitude. In the fracture zone to approximately ten times the mining height, the change in permeability is predicted to be around two to three orders of magnitude. At the height of more than ten times the mining height the magnitude of permeability increased is predicted to be one to two orders of magnitude. The largest oil sand deposit in the world is located in Alberta, Canada, with a total proven reserve of 2.5 trillion barrels of oil. The water based extraction process is currently being used in commercial operations to recover bitumen by flotation from oil sand ores. A recognised challenge in bitumen extraction is the reduced bitumen recovery when processing ores containing high fines content or æweatheredÆ oil sand ores, collectively known as poor processing ores. Inspired by demonstrated success of using kerosene as collectors in coal flotation, an innovative idea of using oily bubbles (air bubbles coated with a thin layer of oil or solvent) was tested to improve bitumen flotation recovery from poor processing ores. In this study, dynamic contact angle of air bubbles or oily bubbles on bitumen and induction time of bitumen-oily bubble attachment in water were measured to justify the use of oily bubbles in bitumen recovery from poor processing ores. The type of oil or solvents, including kerosene, toluene and naphtha, used in generating oily bubbles showed a marginal effect on the contact angle values, similar to the values measured with air bubbles. However, the spreading of an air bubble was found to be much slower than that of oily bubbles on a bitumen surface. The induction time for oily bubble-bitumen attachment was found to be much shorter than that for corresponding air bubble-bitumen attachment in the process water from poor processing ores. The reduced induction time for kerosene-coated air bubble-bitumen attachment correlates well with the improved bitumen recovery from poor processing ores using kerosene-coated oily bubble flotation technology.

The stratiform and vein-type pyritic silver-Iead-zinc-copper sulphide deposits of Sunny Corner, NSW are hosted by acid volcanic and clastic sedimentary rocks of Middle Silurian to Early Devonian age. The rocks have been subjected to low-grade regional metamorphism (prehnite-pumpellyite facies) and three phases of folding and four faulting events are recognised. Pyrite is intensely fractured, indicating brittle deformation. Chalcopyrite and galena exhibit deformation twins and slip planes indicating ductile deformation; sphalerite and chalcopyrite show straight and curved grain boundaries and dihedral angles of 120° as evidence of annealing recryslallisation. Sulphur isotope ratios for 22 samples from five deposits range from 1.7 to 10.7 per mil and average 7.4 per mil. Sulphur isotope data are similar to those from other stratiform sulphide deposits in acid volcanic rocks of Late Silurian age in the eastern Lachlan Fold Belt, especially Woodlawn and Captains Flat and together with other features of the mineralisation, suggest a volcanic exhalative origin for the Sunny Corner deposits.
