Mineral sands mining for ilmenite, rutile and zircon has disturbed over 1000 ha of prime farmland in Virginia (USA) since 1997 and additional areas are likely to be disturbed in Virginia and North Carolina (USA) over the next 15 years. Full-scale mining operations at the Old Hickory Project in Virginia were initiated in 1997 by Iluka Resources Inc. and restoration protocols have continued to evolve in response to a variety of economic, technical and social issues. Early on, the return of these lands to agricultural row-crop production was complicated by vertical stratification of tails + slimes and lateral variability in soil physical conditions in the reclaimed pits and by limited topsoil return. Virginia Tech and Iluka have worked cooperatively with all stakeholders for over 20 years to review the pre-existing research base, conduct new and innovative site-specific research and thereby provide reasonable expectations of post-mining soil productivity levels. In 2004, Virginia Tech, Iluka Resources and a local leaseholder (Carraway-Winn family) agreed to jointly manage a 45 ha research demonstration farm where the long-term effects of alternative soil reconstruction practices are being rigorously monitored for both row crops (corn and wheat) and forage production. All mined land crop yields are also compared to an adjacent undisturbed exceptional quality prime farmland soil. Row crop yields between 2005 and 2010 were significantly above county average yields (regulatory target level) and approximately 75 - 80 per cent of undisturbed adjacent prime farmlands. The state regulatory authority has recently relaxed its position on the necessity of topsoil return versus use of topsoil substitutes based on appropriate on-site research results and the ability of the reclaimed soils to meet comparative local county crop yield targets. This cooperative effort allows all clientele groups to objectively assess the post-mining productivity of these mined lands while providing an invaluable educational opportunity for the mining industry. Cliffs Natural Resources Pty Ltd (CNR) operates iron ore mines in the Koolyanobbing region of Western Australia. Ore is mined from three locations, separated by many kilometres. The ore is stockpiled at these locations, according to an in-house ore classification system (based on grade and source) and then trucked to the crushing and screening plant at Koolyanobbing. Lump and fines products are railed to Esperance for ship loading and export to Asian customers. CNR prides itself on the relatively low inter-shipment grade variability of the products. The Koolyanobbing crusher is fed using a daily blend plan, generated to maintain lump and fines product grades within acceptable tolerance ranges around targets. Achieving low variability requires predicting lump and fines grades as accurately as practical from the estimated head grades of the ROM ores potentially going into the blend. The grade prediction model may be either a direct prediction of crushed lump and fines grades and lump percentage, or be split into two stages: the bias between blasthole estimated head grade and crusher head grade and then the lump-fines algorithm for splitting the head grade between lump and fines products. The lump-fines algorithm comprises the percentage of lump and the difference between the lump and fines grades. We describe a weighted least squares (WLS) regression model for predicting crusher grades and lump proportion from the estimated head grade for Fe, P, SiO2, Al2O3, Mn and S. The method is applied to CNR production data, where the regression model explains approximately 60 per cent of the variance in the crushed ore grade, for both lump and fines. A further small but significant improvement in prediction can be achieved by including the ore classification data in the model. The regression errors exhibit strong positive serial correlation, indicating trends in grade error across multiple blend records. To compensate for the longer-term error, an exponentially smoothed model was developed and applied to the daily grade blend errors. This gave an increase in the longer-term variance explained and therefore an improvement in grade prediction.

The decision making check-list and hierarchy of information for process and plant design is generally wide-ranging and complex. The nature of grades, mineralisation and ore types in an ore body, its mine development sequence, and the body of results from metallurgical and physical test work present complex and competing influences on flowsheet development, values for design, equipment selection, plant efficiencies and operating strategy. The challenge is how to manage all these variables, to understand their impacts on performance, and how best to provide a cost-effective plant design and robust process that meets daily/weekly/monthly operating objectives. Throughput, production and grade or product specifications need to be met. The ore body is not average; its range of metallurgical and physical characteristics may be moderately to highly variable. This paper assesses some of the key competing influences and conflicting issues in design and equipment selection, and their effect on production and performance expectations.

Brisbane’s Airport Link is Australia’s largest road infrastructure project, worth a total value of A$4.8 billion. The project is using surface and underground blasting to excavate hard volcanic rock, Brisbane Tuff. This paper tells the story of the most challenging and difficult blast of the whole project: the removal of a remnant pillar of rock (approximately 2250 m3) next to a major arterial road and within 100 m of existing infrastructure including a number of heritage listed buildings, residences and privately owned sensitive receivers. The pillar consisted of a hard rock wall (Brisbane Tuff) between 2 m and 6 m thick, 15 m high and 35 m wide; with in situ precast concrete piles embedded within 1 m of the boundary of the pillar. Orica Australia Pty Limited was contracted by Thiess John Holland, to perform the work in this area, including design, modelling, drilling and loading of the explosives, as well as blast clearance and shotfiring. Access to the area was limited so all explosives and equipment, including the 20 t drill rig, had to be lifted in and out by crane. Due to the nature of the blast, with infrastructure 5 m directly in front of the 15 m high face, there was only ever going to be one chance to get this blast right. This was an extremely complex blast which required the use of a number of different types of packaged explosives, as well as special timing techniques only made possible by using electronic initiating systems. This type of blast is high risk, and is more typical of a building demolition in the urban environment. The blast was fired on the 25 September 2010, and was highly successful. The environmental results for vibration and overpressure were well under the imposed limits, and the embedded concrete piles remained undamaged.

Quebec Iron Ore (QIO), a subsidiary of Champion Iron Limited (Champion), completed the restart of the Bloom Lake iron ore mine located in the heart of the Labrador Trough region of Northern Quebec, Canada in February 2018. Prior to its restart, the concentrator flow sheet underwent major upgrades which brought the iron recovery to the highest of all Labrador Trough operations. After two profitable years of production, QIO, supported by Soutex, started to look at technologies to improve its current performance and integrate into its expansion project flow sheet. From the lessons learned while optimising Phase 1, the addition of a scavenger-cleaner processing stage was identified as an improvement opportunity to increase recovery, produce a higher-grade product, and further improve the stability of concentrate quality. In 2019, the NI-43101 feasibility study for the Phase 2 expansion, aiming to double the production of high-grade iron ore concentrate, was published. Based on the metallurgical test work, the hydraulic classifier was selected to perform the scavenger-cleaning duty for its well-established performance and known behaviour at the cleaning step in the Phase 1 plant. To validate laboratory results, a pilot scavenger-cleaning hydraulic classifier was installed in Phase 1. Although the hydraulic classifier was selected for the feasibility study, metallurgical test work performed with the REFLUX® classifier showed interesting potential. It was thus decided to also install a pilot RC300 Reflux classifier at the scavenger-cleaning stage in Phase 1. Despite their apparent great similarities, the metallurgical performance was significantly different, and many dozens of sampling campaigns highlighted the different performance of both pieces of equipment considering the feed material particle size. This article presents the pilot plant results in terms of recovery, selectivity and stability for both the Reflux classifier and the hydraulic classifier operated in a scavenger-cleaner stage at the Bloom Lake iron ore concentrator.

Drilling and sampling are responsible for most of the costs during mineral exploration, especially in multi-elements and polymetallic deposits, such as iron, manganese and bauxite deposits. On these deposits, often it is necessary to estimate multiple attributes at several granulometric fractions, ie distinct particle sizes. This paper investigates the effect of sampling at a close spacing grid only the head grades for the multiple chemical species in iron ore deposits. The remaining required data at the various grain sizes are sampled at a sparse grid. The derived geological model is checked for precision and accuracy comparing the output obtained against a model obtained using a complete isotopic data set including head grades and chemical analysis at each granulometric fraction analysed at all sampled positions. Among the several tested alternatives, the best procedure for dealing with the posed problem involved utilising the correlation coefficients between the grades at distinct fractions to obtain an isotopic database prior to interpolation. Cokriging was the method used, based on the intrinsic coregionalisation model. Estimates were obtained with the quality needed for the proposal of the study. Results showed that at least 50 per cent of the blocks were estimated with errors less than ten per cent relative to the grades obtained at the reference model, using only 15 per cent of the granulochemical data employed to obtain the reference model. The methodology also preserved the correlations between the attributes in their several granulometric fractions on the estimated model.

Kanowna Belle Gold Mine is a deep, high-stress, sublevel open stoping mine located near Kalgoorlie. Seismic activity during the development cycle presented problems, including concerns regarding the exposure of personnel. A number of seismic management systems were developed and tested to monitor seismicity and control the risk. It was recognised that a dynamically capable reinforcement and support system was required to be installed as part of the development cycle to reduce the risk of exposure of the underground workforce to uncontrolled movement of rock. The performance of a new Garford Dynamically capable bolt was measured in tests performed by the Western Australian School of Mines (WASM) at their Kalgoorlie Dynamic Test Facility. Detailed descriptions of the facility and data processing were reported by Player, Villaescusa and Thompson (2004) and Thompson, Villaescusa and Player (2004). The development of the Garford Dynamic bolt is described and dynamic testing results are presented and evaluated. This bolt was implemented in the mining cycle following the testing program; the observed performance is described and assessed in this paper.

Heavy fuel oil has been injected into blast furnaces in order to reduce the coke rate, to improve productivity and to control the furnace heat condition. However, in the first oil crisis at the end of 1973, it became necessary to develop an injection technique of new fuels into blast furnaces to reduce oil consumption. In Kobe Steel, Ltd., it was thought that the injection of a coal-oil mixture (COM) into blast furnaces could be developed in a shorter time than pulverised coal injection. The development of this technique was under- taken in 1974, and COM was injected through two tuyeres of the No.3 blast furnace at the Kobe works in 1977 and 1978. In addition, in order to study the combust- ibility of COM and the phenomena in the tuyere zone, the development of a gas sampling method was under- taken in 1975. In this paper, the results of the injection tests and gas sampling tests are reported.

A resource model serves two main purposes depending on the stage of a project. The first is to provide an early indication of likely tonnages and grades at certain cut-offs so that decisions can be made on whether continued spending on the project is justified. The second is to provide a basis for mine planning, feasibility studies and reserves. Resource models are not designed for selection of actual blocks in the ground for processing. This is the purpose of a grade control model, which is created at a stage beyond both resources and reserves.Inferred, Indicated and Measured Resources contain different levels of uncertainty with respect to the accuracy of the resulting grade and tonnage curves. These uncertainties arise from three broad areas: quality of information, geological assumptions and estimation technique. This paper focuses on known problems with the ordinary kriging (OK) estimation technique. Resource estimates often produce smoothed block grade distributions with much lower block grade variability than true selective mining unit (SMU) block grade distributions. There are two main factors that are involved in this smoothing. Firstly, where the block size used for estimation is larger than the SMU block size, this will smooth the block grade distribution and move the grade and tonnage curves away from the true SMU block grade and tonnage curves. Secondly, and less well recognised, is that smoothing is inherent in the OK estimator. This also moves the grade and tonnage curves away from the true SMU grade and tonnage curves, even when the estimate is done at the SMU block size. There are a number of techniques, such as simulation, uniform conditioning and degraded search neighbourhoods that can provide a better approximation of the true SMU block grade and tonnage curves at the expense of individual block accuracy.This paper aims to explore the extent to which OK resource estimates designed to maximise individual block accuracy can differ from (an estimate of) the true resource at SMU block size in terms of grade and tonnage curves. The differences at economic cut-offs and above are examined. In some cases these differences are significant. Both the OK estimation technique and block size play a part in the differences observed. To do this we will examine a number of commodities and deposit types using real project data.The conclusion is that the current industry standard default practice of targeting maximum individual block accuracy (conditional unbiasedness) using OK at resource stage, without consideration or evaluation of the extent of associated smoothing at SMU scale, can lead to significant errors in fundamental mine planning decisions. This then has implications for resource classification if the classifications are based heavily on the OK quality without consideration of the true SMU distribution.CITATION:Kentwell, D, 2014. Silicon-based photovoltaic cells are currently the most dominant types applied to convert solar energy to electricity. In solar-grade silicon (SG-Si), the control of boron (B) and phosphorus (P) is very critical. Generally, these elements are difficult to remove into acceptable sub-ppm levels from lower grade Si. This study investigates slag treatment as a process for Si refining, focusing on the behaviour of P and B. The experiments were conducted by equilibrating Si-B-P alloys with 43 wt per cent SiO2 – 47 wt per cent CaO – 10 wt per cent Al2O3 slag under inert atmosphere at 1500°C. Different crucible materials were used (Al2O3, SiO2 and MgO), which determined the primary saturation phase for the system and modified the final slag composition accordingly. The samples were equilibrated and analysed with microanalysis techniques (EPMA (electron probe microanalysis) and LA-ICP-MS (laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry)). New standards were prepared and applied in the LA-ICP-MS analyses. Experimental results show that silver is essentially fully dissolved in silicon, as well as most phosphorus with LP ( = wt per cent P in slag/wt per cent P in Si) between 0.1–0.3. The distribution coefficient of boron was measured to be between 1 and 2. The crucible material used had an influence on the phase compositions and slight influence on the distribution coefficients of boron and phosphorus. The experimental results provided new accurate data when considering applicability of slag treatment as a technique for Si refining and Si PV cell recycling.

Iran is one of the most seismically active countries in the world, being crossed by several major fault lines that cover at least 90 per cent of the country. As a result, earthquakes in Iran occur often and are destructive. So, it is important to consider the seismic stability and reliability of all structures including tailings dams.In this study, the tailings dam stability of the Sangan Iron Ore Mine in Khorasan Razavi, Iran is considered for the case study. The tailings storage facilities of the mine have three cells with the capacity of 45 million cubic metres. The first cell, which has three stages of dam raising, has been recently brought into operation. This cell has a downstream-raised retaining embankment. As the risk of seismicity in this area is high, seismic response of this dam was evaluated by numerical methods. To do this, appropriate models were developed for materials used in foundation and body of the embankment. Then for seismic stability analysis, Tabas (Iran – 1978) and Chi-Chi (Taiwan – 1999) earthquake acceleration simulations were applied.The results of this study indicated that the upstream portion of Stage 3 of the dam and dam crest did not experience significant horizontal displacements during earthquake period, but the downstream portion of Stage 3 of the dam showed a maximum horizontal displacement of 60 cm at the third stage of dam raising. This is three times more than what was estimated by the designer. Also, the maximum vertical displacement resulting from simulation of the Tabas earthquake was 35 cm. The results of dam response to Tabas and Chi-Chi earthquakes indicate that displacement, shear stress and pore pressure by the Tabas earthquake were higher than the case of Chi-Chi earthquake. The higher energy of Tabas earthquake and the higher frequency near to the natural frequency of Tabas earthquake could be the reasons of this difference. The results of this case study confirm that if the studied tailings dam impacted by an earthquake of a similar magnitude to Tabas, the dam will be seismically stable and the developed strains will not be significant.CITATION:Delavar, A, Rashidi Nejad, F and Ganjian, N, 2015. The presence of clay minerals slows down the settling rate and mitigates compact consolidation efficiency in tailings dewatering. The increasing use of saline water in many plants, affects the dewatering performance and presents the mining industry with new concerns. Efficient tailings dewatering is a great challenge due to the complexity character of tailings, especially clay mineralogy, clay content, and water chemistry. In this study, existing studies of the effect of different affecting parameters, such as pH, ionic strength and polymer flocculants, on clay aggregation behaviours are reviewed. The settling behaviours of three types of commonly observed clay minerals in tailings, kaolinite, bentonite, and illite, are also investigated in saline water with different water salinity as a case study. The settling rates of clay minerals are found to be affected by water salinity, clay type, clay content and polymer dosage levels. High salinity water hinders the settling of kaolinite but assists the settling of bentonite and illite through formation of different aggregation structures.The current work has indicated that strategies to promote more rapid dewatering could include adjusting flocculant type or level, water salinity and salt balance, and tailings solid content levels. Implementing dewatering strategies may require a more detailed knowledge of the effect of surface chemistry on the nature and strength of the clay inter-particle forces. This study discusses the research gaps on how to better manage clay-rich tailings in saline water and identifies new research directions. The development of a water management model, supported through in-line monitoring data to predict and manipulate of the surface chemistry of the clay component of the tailings could be a new direction to manage the issues associated with clay minerals in the process of dewatering and tailings management. The Fimiston Open Pit (commonly referred to as the æSuper PitÆ) is a part of the Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mines Pty Ltd (KCGM) operation in Kalgoorlie-Boulder. KCGM manages the Fimiston Open Pit, the Mt Charlotte underground mine, the Fimiston Mill and the Gidji Roaster for its Joint Venture Owners, Newmont and Barrick Australia. KCGM produces up to 850 000 ounces of gold per year. The KCGM operations are located on the historical Golden Mile on the outskirts of the City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder, about 600 kilometres east of Perth Western Australia. This traditionally underground mining centre has been worked since 1893, yielding in excess of 50 Moz of gold from ore with an average head grade of 10 g/t. This represents approximately ten per cent of the gold produced in Australia and one per cent of the gold produced in the world. The Fimiston Open Pit is essentially an aggregation of what were known as the Judd, South, Paringa, Croesus/Eclipse, Central, Brownhill, Drysdale, Morrison, North and Horseshoe pits into one continuous large-scale operation. The old Fimiston Underground Operations (included the Main, Croesus, Chaffers, Lake View, and Perseverance shafts) were also located within the area of the Fimiston Open Pit. The underground operations closed in 1992 due to high mining costs.

Gold and lesser copper mineralisation are associated with porphyry-related vein systems periph-eral to two separate inferred intrusive centres north of Kainantu, Papua New Guinea (PNG). The intersection of NW trending structures, formed parallel to the Markham Fault, with NE trending transfer structures localise porphyry intrusions, and control vein distrib-ution.The Arakompa veins intrude pre-existing fractures in Akuna granodiorite, located proximal to an inferred porphyry. These veins are characterised by early quartz and later pyrite-chalcopyrite. Gold mineralis-ation is associated with Bi-Te phases in the sulphide veining. At Maniape, en echelon gash veins occur within the imbricate portion of a regional structure. Maniape is a high level carbonate-base metal gold system formed distal to the same porphyry source as Z ?-;4 kmmna

This paper points to the timely importance of commencing a centrally recognised perpetual collection of mineral specimens in the Northern Territory which has as one of its objectives the collection and preservation of Northern Territory minerals of scientific, educational and heritage value. Currently in the Northern Territory there is no government department or institution that has a resourced coordinated state-wide objective to collect and document collectable mineral specimens. Specimens held in storage by the Department of Mines and Energy and the Museum and Art Galleries of the NT are not catalogued and owe their existence to fortuitous circumstances, not as a result of a planned systematic scientific approach to mineralogy. Northern Territory mineral species and unique specimens have and will continue to be driven to extinction while no central and active, recognised repository exists. This situation persists despite the fact mineral production is the Territory's largest income earner. The paper presents the arguments that hopefully will assist decision-makers to commence development of a state mineral collection lodged within an appropriate institution in the Northern Territory.

A new approach to more reliably predict the Ni (and Fe, Mg) composition of Ni laterites was tested for RC samples from the (siliceous) oxide–style, Siberia North deposit, Kalgoorlie Nickel Project (KNP), in the north-eastern Yilgarn (WA) using partial least squares regression (PLSR) analysis of diffuse reflectance spectra over the 380 - 2500 nm wavelength range with a multi–element chemistry data set. PLSR cross-validation models were developed to predict FeO, MgO and Ni contents in composite samples with bulk composition limits of >0.08 wt per cent Ni and <6 wt per cent MgO. Calibration and validation models showed a strong, linear trend for predicting FeO and, to a lesser extent, Ni content, whereas PLSR models for predicting Mg content were less reliable. This reflected the prevailing mineralogy and associated element deportment within the oxide laterite profile. For example, Fe and Ni distribution is controlled by relatively few minerals, predominantly goethite and, to a lesser extent, the Fe3+-bearing smectite, nontronite. Magnesium is associated with a range of Mg-bearing minerals, some of which are compositionally complex (eg serpentine, talc, chlorite, smectite and carbonates). Magnesium chemistry alone does not reflect the varied mineralogy of samples with relatively high (5 - 6 wt per cent) MgO contents, which can be spectrally distinct. Hence, samples with similar Mg contents, though comprising Mg-bearing minerals with distinct reflectance spectra, were difficult to model (eg smectite versus Mg-carbonates). The findings of this study demonstrate that characterisation of Ni laterite composition may be achieved as part of routine logging of either drill chips or diamond drill core using PLSR analysis, but that a detailed understanding of the mineral-element association is essential for reliable predictive analysis. This has particular relevance to characterising the geometallurgy of Ni laterites, especially where deposits may be classed as the same type, but have distinct compositional and mineralogical differences.

EnergyAustralia’s Sydney Central Business District (CBD) cable tunnel network will form a loop 6.2 km in length. The 3.2 km long, 3.5 m, diameter city east cable tunnel (CECT) currently in design, will complete the loop in 2014. This paper discusses the ventilation design of the CECT, considering operation for four functions:1. normal (unmanned),2. access (manned),3. purge, and4. emergency fire modes.The dominant design criterion which determines the required ventilation capacity for CECT is the specification of an upper air temperature limits of 35°C (dry bulb) and 24°C (wet bulb) for manned access, during all ambient weather conditions and cable heating loads. Simplistic static heat transfer analyses do not yield a sufficiently accurate calculation of tunnel air temperature and humidity to provide a safe and yet economical design. The primary refinement in the analysis discussed in this paper is associated with modelling of the system’s dynamic behaviour.Our means of analysis is through a thermo-fluid-dynamic simulation of the interactions between the diurnally and seasonally varying loads (cable heat generation, ambient air conditions and groundwater inflow), tunnel airflow and the resulting tunnel air temperature and humidity. These simulations are validated using experimental data from the existing city south and city west cable tunnels.Fire life safety scenarios are also analysed and discussed in association with the ventilation design. Ventilation strategies are developed for dealing with such emergency fire situations.The understanding and insight provided by the work offers the ability to optimise ventilation plant provisions in future cable tunnels, particularly long and high energy density tunnels.

Central to any business is its Asset Management Plan which encapsulates the business context and key organisational objectives such as profitability, safety and environmental standards. Life Cycle Planning (LCP) is a key component of an overall Asset Management Plan. A comprehensive approach to Life Cycle Planning forecasts the financial expenditure required to support the performance of the asset over the business life. It incorporates capital, maintenance and operational expenditure along with an estimation of economic life. Within its body the LCP provides the detail of the maintenance plan and method of its execution. Once optimised the LCP becomes the overarching plan executed through the application of several elements of the Asset Management Plan to ensure the return on investment from the assets is optimal. Each of the elements of the LCP is bound by a set of loops that provide information based on the analysis of outcomes. These loops drive the continuous improvement of performance and cost over the life of the asset. In this way we ensure that the LCP is a dynamic plan responsive to the changing business environment. The paper being presented today will describe the process undertaken and the outcomes derived when this approach was applied to a $600 M+ coal handling and preparation plant in QueenslandÆs Bowen Basin. It will also delve into the difficulties encountered from both technical and cultural aspects; the latter proving to be the most difficult to manage. It will describe the hurdles and barriers that hampered progress including the human influences and the natural desire to revert to what has been done in the past when things became a bit difficult. In the end the results are there to show that the upfront expenditure and investment in time was time and money well spent and the outcome has the operation well placed to manage the assets in a manner designed to deliver the optimal business outcome.

Management of historic tailings is a major challenge facing the mining industry and its regulators. However, through improved mineralogical and chemical characterisation of such materials the opportunity to develop better rehabilitation strategies arises. Microanalytical techniques including microscopy, mineral liberation analysis and laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICPMS) allow for improved tailings characterisation – but the challenge posed by these techniques is how to use them effectively. Additionally, data sets collected by such techniques must be properly integrated, only then can they assist in the identification of the most appropriate rehabilitation strategies. A study conducted at the Old Tailings Dam (OTD) located at the Savage River Mine, Tasmania allowed for the integrated use of several microanalytical techniques to help evaluate the benefits of a shallow water cover as a potential rehabilitation strategy. Samples (n = 144) from 14 trenches and 11 boring cores (2 m maximum depth) were collected across the OTD. These were subjected to routine acid-base accounting, with a subset subjected to detailed mineralogy using a modified sulfide alteration index (SAI), X-ray diffractometry and mineral liberation analysis (MLA). In addition, representative samples (n = 6) from across the OTD were subjected to laser-ablation ICPMS to characterise the pyrite chemistry. Our results showed that tailings in the northern area submerged under a natural water cover were relatively unoxidised from approximately 1 m depth, with SAI values of 1 to 2. Tailings from the subaerial southern portion were extensively oxidised to approximately 35 cm depth (SAI = maximum 5.8), with fresher materials observed underneath (SAI = 5 to 5.8). Pyrite from across the OTD is enriched in Co, Cu and Ni. Through the integrated application of microanalytical tools, we determined that establishing a water cover of at least 1.5 m depth across the OTD is a suitable rehabilitation option for this historic site. The problem of comparison of island arc's andesites in terms of petrochemical data is exa- mined. It is definitely established that only two main factors exist controlling the petroche- mical variety of the Kurile arc's andesites.Ori final multivariate statistical technique and computer software are used to extract these fac- tors. It is shown as well that the chemical com- position of igneous rocks depends on the type and structure of the Earth's crust. The follo- ~cing interpretation is proposed for the two factors describing petrochemistry of andesites: the first one is the depth to the Benioff seis- mofocal zone and the second one is supposed to indicate the position of the peripheral magma chambers.
