The Brunswick plant is located in Costerfield, approximately 40km east of Bendigo in central Victoria. Crushing, grinding, gravity gold concentration and flotation methods are used to produce a saleable gold concentrate and an antimony-gold flotation concentrate. This paper discusses the improvements made within the processing plant which have resulted in a 99% increase in throughput over nameplate capacity of 6 250 average tonnes per month to 12 445 average tonnes per month and increases of 12% gold (from 2007 average of 78% to 2014 average of 90%) and 16% antimony recovery (from 2007 average of 79% to 2015 average of 95%). This paper discusses the methods used in the design of flotation plants, including benchscale batch and locked cycle tests and pilot plant trials. Two case studies are presented, one for the Cadia Hill Gold Mine and the other for the Hellyer copper, zinc and lead plant. These case studies present different problems with widely different target grind sizes, liberation characteristics and HellyerÆs sequential flotation circuit versus CadiaÆs æsimpleÆ copper/gold flotation circuit. They have a common theme in that pyrite forms the principal floatable concentrate diluent. Hellyer ore contains finely disseminated chalcopyrite, sphalerite, galena, and tetrahedrite. The flotation plant design was based on extensive benchscale testwork (including locked cycle tests) on drill core and many months of operation of a 30 tonne per hour æpilot plantÆ, using the old Cleveland Tin Mine process plant suitably modified for the duty. The Cadia concentrator was designed on an extensive benchscale variability testwork program, approximately a dozen locked cycle tests conducted on drill core and two weeks of continuous pilot plant trials on three separate samples obtained from an adit into the orebody. The orebody is a monzonite porphyry with disseminated chalcopyrite/bornite/pyrite of very low grade (0.17 per cent Cu, 0.73 g/t Au). Methods used to establish the appropriate flotation circuits for the treatment of the Hellyer and Cadia ores, as well as the interpretation of the testwork data, are discussed in this paper. Plant performance is reviewed in the context of predicted versus operational performance.

Greywackes of the greater Auckland Region (Brynderwyn Hills to Hamilton), when considered on a regional scale, have characteristic ranges of physical, mineralogical and other properties. Some properties (eg density, porosity, crushing resistance, clay index) generally cluster and correlate with the basement greywacke facies, regions and terranes recognised by geologists, and their diagenetic/metamorphic level. Other local factors, particularly variations in mineralogical composition, nature of matrix cement, grain size, and degree of weathering may produce aberrant properties. Some of these local variations, when extreme, have the potential to affect the aggregateÆs performance in roading or the concrete industries.   Smectite and the zeolite laumontite are the major deleterious minerals occurring in fresh greywacke rocks of the Auckland region, although weathered rocks may contain halloysite, an expanding member of the kaolin clay mineral group. These minerals, when found in abnormally high levels in greywackes cause expansion effects in the aggregate. Currently there are inconsistencies in the detailed correlation of shrinkage, clay index, clay mineral content and intrinsic expansion data that need further research to resolve them.

The main direction in the mechanisation in the mines of the Donbas and the USSR is long-face technology with complexes on the base of hydraulic supports. On the base of the 30 year old experience of exploitation of the coal clearing systems the serious data about the behaviour of the contained rock, display of underground pressure 'on longwalls and preparatory workings have been accumulated. Exploitation works in mines of the USSR are carried out at different depths: from 1000m to 1200m. There are 26 mines in Donbas, which exceed the depth of 1000m. It is the mines of Donbas, where is a rich experience of the exploitation of coal seams in various conditions. Besides, there are wide variations on the factors of the extraction thickness, depth of seam, angle of dip, occurrence of gas dynamics and others. In many scientific establishments, and in Donetsk Polytechnical Institute also, there are scientific research/results, which can be of interest for the coal mining countries.The volume of coal mining from longwall system-mechanised walls in Donbas became stable at the end of the 70s at level of 70 percent. All the efforts to increase this level have not given any notable results, not saying about the technical-economical data, which gradually deteriorate. It shows that positive progress in using the technology for the long walls is over and it is necessary to find new ways of mechanisation of coal winning.

The Ebor Volcano in north eastern New South Wales is an eroded example of a central-type intraplate volcanic-intrusive complex. It is of Miocene age (19 - 20 Ma) and has similarities to other central-type volcanoes in eastern Australia which may represent manifestations of sub-lithospheric hotspot activity. Thick lava flows are exposed around the Great Escarpment and are dominated by a tholeiitic basaltic suite, ranging from ol-tholeiite to qz-tholeiite to icelandite with ages of 19.2 - 19.6 Ma. On its western edge, the tholeiitic lava suite probably overlies remnants of basanite flows belonging to the Eocene (~48 Ma) Doughboy province, but elsewhere, minor alkaline basaltic lavas may be coeval with the tholeiitic suite. Several felsic bodies were emplaced into the volcano at ~19.0 - 19.2 Ma and include subalkaline and peralkaline types. The Crescent Complex is a Miocene-age, strongly differentiated mafic to felsic intrusion in basement rocks and centrally located in pre-erosion reconstructions of the Ebor Volcano. It is interpreted to be a major feeder for the tholeiitic lavas based on age and composition. Evolution of the dominant tholeiitic suite proceeded from a parental ol-tholeiite magma, through qz-tholeiite, icelandite and small volumes of felsic rocks by fractionation of plagioclase, olivine, clinopyroxene and titanomagnetite, accompanied by enrichmentof SiO2, SFeOlMgO, alkalies and HFSE.

Teleseismic travel time residuals measured on 600-1000 km seismic arrays across the Rio Grande and East African rifts provide evidence for upper mantle low velocity zones beneath each rift of velocity contrast 6%-8%. Refraction studies show thinning of the crust below the rift axes. Regional uplift which extends hundreds of km either side of the axes, is isostatically compensated by negative density contrast at depth. Since the refraction argues against compensation by thickened crust, compensation in the upper mantle low velocity zones is suggested. Temperature effects alone can not explain the reduced velocities. Generation of a few percent of partial melt is the most probable source of the reduction. A passive extensional mechanism is investigated for the Rio Grande rift in which hot asthenosphere intrudes the lithosphere raising its temperature and generating moderate melting. It requires less than 1% extension to explain the melting but a prodigious 26% to raise the temperature from a pre-rifting continental geotherm to the solidus. Geological estimates find that extension is less than 10% over the uplift zone. Such a mechanism is possible only if the prerifting lower lithosphere geotherm lies closer to the solidus than that of stable continent. This is supported by the observed high heat flow in the Rio Grande rift uplift region which, given the long time constant for thermal diffusion, reflects elevated temperatures at depth well in advance of the onset of rifting.

This paper covers only the energy uses of natural resources and does not deal with non- energy uses, which in 1975 were of the order of 10 per cent of the total consumption of energy resources. The United Nations `J' Series of Statistics ex- presses each of the various forms of energy in terms of its coal equivalent in metric tonnes and this basis is followed in this paper. During periods of high metal prices and strong metal demand tailings retreatment can be economic. Most tailings retreatment operations are technically challenging, low margin operations, because the easily recovered mineral has already been removed, therefore, process improvements can potentially yield large economic benefits. The Hellyer tailings dam was owned by Intec Ltd and contained 10.9 million tonnes grading 2.8 per cent zinc, 3.0 per cent lead, 88 g/t of silver, 0.16 per cent copper and 2.6 g/t gold. In November 2006 the Polymetals Group, as operator, restarted the Hellyer plant to retreat these tailings. Within a few months the operation had stabilised and Polymetals was meeting budgeted targets of throughput, metal recovery and concentrate quality. Polymetals and Intec then investigated methods that would improve the metallurgical result for this difficult to treat tailings. Since the tailings are fine-grained with 80 per cent <45 ¦m, magnetic aggregation of the paramagnetic sphalerite was evaluated. Magnetic aggregation of an oxidised tailings feed has not been tested before, nor had the technology been available when Hellyer ore was originally processed. Extensive statistical test work showed magnetic aggregation of the sphalerite fines in the zinc cleaner circuit increased total zinc recovery. The increase in the mean zinc recovery with magnetic conditioning was 3.63 per cent, at a statistical level of confidence of 97.8 per cent, and at the same mean zinc concentrate grade.

The design of primary sample cutters for high-capacity conveyors is critical to achieving a correct sample, both in collecting the sample and ensuring smooth sample discharge flow. Modelling usually occurs at the design stage and requires extensive experience to achieve the correct result. However, it is difficult to confirm the effectiveness of the cutter design until after installation. Even with high-speed video, confirmation of complete sample capture is difficult, especially if the material characteristics change over time. Recent investigation using discrete element method (DEM) simulation to model the flow of the ore into the cutter and observe how it interacts with the cutter has revealed some interesting design requirements not observed in the past. By including DEM modelling, the correct design and optimisation of the cutter can be more accurately determined prior to commissioning.CITATION:Hidding, M and Shaw, R, 2017. A survey has been undertaken of the petrography of North Island greywackes with a particular focus on the occurrence in them of smectite (swelling clay) and chlorite, two minerals that are closely associated, chemically similar, and commonly interlayered with each other. Smectite is the mineral which is a major cause of greywacke aggregatesÆ poor performance. Smectite occurs in post-metamorphic shear zones and in surface weathering profiles over greywackes. This study focuses on the petrography of fresh greywacke rocks.   The occurrence and abundance of smectite and chlorite and their relationship in greywackes is largely a function of the chemistry of the sediment and the maximum temperature that the sediment has been subjected to during diagenesis and/or very low grade (anchizone) metamorphism. Rock chemistry, particularly total iron and MgO, determines the smectite and/or chlorite content in fine-grained greywackes (argillites and siltstones) but chemistry is less influential in sandstones, where at low grades of metamorphism much of the Fe and Mg of the rock is held in unreacted detrital minerals and the mineral constituents of lithic grains.   Four zones which represent different levels of diagenesis and very low grade metamorphism, based on the crystallinity of illite and chlorite in the greywackes, and the proportion of smectite interlayered with chlorite, have been mapped in the North Island. In the anchizone smectite does not appear as a discrete mineral, it is always interlayered with chlorite. In the upper anchizone chlorite contains approximately ten per cent of smectite interlayered with chlorite. In the lower anchizone about 30 per cent smectite can occur in chlorite.   In addition to the smectite and chlorite inherent in the greywackes as the result of the thermal overprint, smectite as a discrete mineral and smectite-chlorite interlayered minerals with high levels of smectite, occur in abundance on shear zone surfaces and in alteration zones adjacent to shear zones; these are the main contributers to the high levels of smectite recorded in many greywacke aggregates.

The use of column flotation cells for recovery of phosphate is becoming more common practice in certain parts of the world (Brazil, Russia) where igneous phosphate ores are processed. Igneous phosphates are generally finer grained (< 200µm) than some of the traditional sedimentary phosphates (<400µm). Australian phosphate from the Georgina basin is sedimentary, but has a much finer grain size (typically < 106µm) than similar deposits in North Africa and the USA.In 2013, Arianne Phosphate completed a bankable feasibility study for the development of their igneous phosphate deposit at the Lac a Paul site in Quebec. Initially, lab test work and bench scale piloting indicated that using traditional mechanical flotation would be able to produce adequate concentrate grade and an economic level of recovery, but would necessitate the installation of a complex and operationally challenging flotation circuit. Later pilot plant testing using column cells resulted in a significant reduction in process complexity and facilitated the processing of the -20µm ore fraction which resulted in a 10% increase in P2O5 recovery and a 5% increase in concentrate grade %P2O5.Flotation column testing achieved a concentrate grade of 38.6% P2O5 at a P2O5 recovery of 90%. Using a mechanical flotation cell circuit, the concentrate grade was 36.4% P2O5 with a P2O5 recovery of only 78.8%. A noticeable feature of the testing was the simplicity of the column flotation circuit configuration (Rougher + 2 stages of cleaning + Cleaner Scavenger) compared to the mechanical flotation cell circuit (Rougher + Scavenger + 3 stages of cleaning).The financial benefit for this case study was estimated using a sales price of US$ 195/t FOB for a 38.6% P2O5 product, and an assumed cost of production of US$ 95/t, the netback price is calculated at US$100/t. For a daily milling rate of 55,000t/d, the improved flotation performance provides additional concentrate production of 1,203t/d. Using the netback price calculated above, this calculates to additional gross profit of US$ 120,260/d.Annualised, this equals US$ 40.7 million in additional revenue for a similar or reduced CAPEX.The use of column flotation on fine grained phosphate ore types often requires fine grinding and desliming to liberate the phosphate value, such as the Australian sedimentary phosphate ores. The Waihi Region is host to many low sulphidation epithermal Au-Ag deposits. The Golden Cross mine located at the head of the Waitekauri River, eight kilometres NW of Waihi, was a gold mining operation that placed significant emphasis on environmental management. An assessment of the influence of this mining project on stream sediment geochemistry (Fe, Mn, As, Cu, Pb, Zn, Cr, Cd, Ni, Ag and Se) in the Waitekauri Catchment has been made. Effective waste management during the mine operation appears to have prevented contamination of stream sediment. Trace metal concentrations in the Waitekauri Catchment sediment have generally decreased since 1987, and are currently mainly below the ANZECC (2000) sediment quality guidelines. However, elevated As levels were recorded in the Upper Waitekauri River and Battery Stream, exceeding guideline values. Elevated levels of Cu, Pb, Zn and Cd were found in the Huanui Stream, a tributary of the lower Waitekauri River. This reflects the influence of past mining operations in the valley, as well as natural weathering of hydrothermally altered Coromandel Group andesite. At a number of sites, Mn concentrations also exceeded sediment quality guidelines, and this may be derived from the remediated Golden Cross mine site.

Spatial and temporal trends in water chemistry in the acidic (pH ~2.6) Berkeley Pit lake, Butte, Montana, can be explained by a newly developed iron-cycling model. Key elements of this model include: subaqueous oxidation of pyrite and other metal sulfide minerals by dissolved ferric iron, producing Fe2+ as a by-product; re-oxidation of Fe2+ to Fe3+ in the epilimnion, assisted by A ferrooxidans; precipitation of secondary ferric minerals (schwertmannite, jarosite) in the epilimnion; and replenishment of the Fe3+ concentration of the hypolimnion by seasonal lake turnover and gravitational settling and re-dissolution of ferric precipitates. Pyrite oxidation rates were approximated by using published rate laws and information on the Fe3+ concentrations (~5 mmol) of the Berkeley Pit as a function of depth. The results indicate that subaqueous pyrite oxidation may be releasing as little as 6 + 106 or as much as 600 + 106 moles of H+ each year to the lake; the large range reflects uncertainty in calculation of the specific surface area of pyrite in the flooded pit. This helps to explain the observation that the pH and metal concentrations of the Berkeley Pit have not improved with time since mine flooding began in 1983. Vertical cycling of ferric iron in the pit lake permits pyrite oxidation to continue in deep water, even in the absence of dissolved oxygen. This hypothesis is supported by preliminary stable-isotope data.

As part of BHP Iron Ore's policy and goal of achieving a high standard of environmental management within its operations, a protocol for mine closure has evolved. The need to demonstrate sound environmental management with respect to site decommissioning meant that a comprehensive, environmentally sensitive closure protocol was required. Within this framework, a four-phase protocol was developed, the first phase was the determination of objectives in relation to site rehabilitation and end land use. The second phase was the determination of the process required to achieve these objectives. The third phase was the application of this process in a site specific manner. The fourth and final phase was monitoring of the site with regard to the achievement of determined objectives. The protocol was originally developed to direct the closure and decommissioning of the Goldsworthy site in 1992. This being the first total site decommissioning for BHP Iron Ore. Since that time the protocol has been successfully utilised for the closure of the Yampi (Koolan Island) operations (in 1993/94) and the Shay Gap/Nimingarra Operations (in 1994/95).

The provision of professional engineering services in Queensland is regulated through the Professional Engineers Act 2002. The Act requires that anyone providing professional engineering services must be registered and is subject to continuing professional development requirements. The engineering profession is actively requesting the Queensland Government to expand registration to include associate and technologist engineering practitioners. In view of the strong moves at the Federal level towards national registration of professional groups the lessons of the Queensland experience are very relevant across Australia. This paper describes the rationale behind the Act and outlines its operation. It discusses some misconceptions regarding the applicability of the Act to various engineering activities. There is much that the Act has to offer individual engineers and industry generally in establishing, articulating and maintaining standards for professional engineering work. The paper considers legal actions taken to date under the provisions of the Act and discusses the way in which this parallels industry moves towards quality assurance of work force capability.
