This paper presents a three-dimensional analysis of a trapezoidal-shaped segmental tunnel lining for a recent tunnelling project in Sydney. Two- dimensional analyses, hand calculations and equipment selection defined the lining geometry and loads. The analysis, which was undertaken using 3DEC (Itasca), included a complete ring of six segments bolted together to assess the impact of imperfectly built rings. Asymmetry was induced in the analysis by unfavourable positioning of segments within construction tolerances. Model output includes displacement and stress within the entire ring and normal, shear and bending moments at the joints. For the case analysed, the results suggest a 10 mm construction tolerance increases normal and shear stresses along the radial joints by approximately 25 per cent and 15 per cent, respectively and up to a doubling of the induced moments.

Gold was determined directly in eight different mill cyanide solutions, by atomic absorption spectroscopy in an acetylene-air flame. Some of the mill solutions were diluted with water to bring them into the most sensitive absorption region (5-50 p.p.m. Au) whereas those solutions with very low gold content «2 p.p.m.) were concentrated by evaporation.Calcium was complexed with ethylene diamine tetra-acetic acid (EDTA) to avoid the undesirable effect of a precipitate on atomization.When added to standard gold solutions, EDTA had no effect on absorption, nor did any of the impurities common in mill cyanide solutions.Known amounts of gold, ranging from 2 to 30 p.p.m., were added to mill solution'aliquots and recovered to within 100 ± 2·5 per cent. For duplicate determinations under normal worKing conditions, standard deviation was 1·32 p.p.m.Excellent agreement was found between atomic absorption gold values and accurate fire assay values.INTRODUCTIONAtomic absorption spectroscopy has been shown to offer a rapid and accurate method for the determination of trace amounts of a number of metal ions. Ernest Henry Mining (EHM) is a copper, gold and magnetite mining and processing operation located 38 kilometres north east of Cloncurry in the Mount Isa - Cloncurry mineral district of north west Queensland, Australia. The EHM ore body is an iron oxide copper gold deposit with an average grade of 1.1 percent copper, 0.5 g/tonne gold and 22 percent magnetite.At the end of 2009, after a series of promising laboratory test work, EHM converted the ball mill media charge from forged steel to high chrome media. Laboratory test work also indicated that with the use of high chrome media, the pH was able to be reduced with no negative impact on plant performance. At high pH values (above 10.5), the forged media is passivated, so as the pH of the system drops the media corrosion rate increases and floods the system with corrosion products, affecting flotation. As the high chrome media is much more inert, pH has less of an effect on copper flotation response.This paper provides an overview of the effects of reducing the pH in the EHM copper rougher flotation circuit. The pH in the roughers was dropped from 10.6 to 9.6 to determine the impact on the rougher performance and the subsequent performance of the whole copper flotation circuit. It was found that there was a slightly increased improvement in copper recovery and no statistical change in either the rougher or final copper concentrate grades for copper and gold.With the reduction in pH, there was a noticeable reduction in lime usage from 0.85 kg of lime per tonne of ore processed to 0.55 kg/t. The Golden Cross low sulfidation epithermal deposit occurs in pervasively altered andesite of the Waipupu Formation and in the Waiharakeke Dacite. The unaltered, post-mineral Whakamoehau Andesite overlies these units. The Empire zone of the Golden Cross deposit contains a stockwork which is currently mined by open pit methods, and a series of veins that are mined underground. Alteration envelops both the underground and open pit mineralisation. The core of the alteration zone contains silicification, as quartz veins, and adularia. Shallow portions of the system contain illite-smectite and a thermally unstable chlorite, tentatively identified as corrensite, which pass downward into illite and chlorite, respectively. Replacement calcite occurs widely throughout the altered zone; pyrite is nearly ubiquitous. This alteration assemblage indicates formation from near-neutral alkali chloride waters. A late, post-mineralisation alteration assemblage of calcite, smectite, illitesmectite, kaolinite and siderite presumably formed from weakly acidic, steam-heated CO2-rich waters.   We have identified eight stages of vein formation: (1) sulfide veins, (2) black veins, (3) massive veins, (4) banded veins, (5) thin white veins, (6) crumbly veins, (7) massive/platy calcite veins, and (8) flattened rhomb calcite veins. Gold mineralisation occurred relatively early in the lifetime of the system, dominantly during 2 through 4. The late calcite veins (7 and 8) and early sulfide veins (1) are barren.

A combined reflection seismic and magnetic survey off the south coast of New South Wales has revealed six distinct reflection horizons within the Lower Triassic-Upper Permian sequence, and has enabled the upper part of the lllawarra Coal Measures to be mapped in considerable detail. Large magnetic anomalies in the eastern half of the survey area appear to originate in the Gerringong Volcanic Sequence which forms the magnetic basement in the survey. Small residual anomalies in the western half of the area can be correlated with small scale faulting and folding in the upper part of the llawarra Coal Measures, as revealed by the seismic reflection survey.A synclinal axis striking at approximately 55° has been mapped near the western margin of the survey area, and areas of faulting and folding have been outlined by combined analysis of seismic and magnetic results.

Recent developments in diamond drilling practice have been chiefly 'concerned with modifications in drill design and 'operating technique whereby an increase in daily footage rates and reduced footage costs have been achieved without any marked improvements in the recovery of core. This trend is perhaps due to the general acceptance by the mining and drilling engineer alike of the belief that diamond drilling has definite limitations in exploratory work on mineral deposits characterized by irregularities in continuity and grade, such a belief arising from the fact that drilling technique has not yet evolved coring devices to ensure the full recovery of the rock and mineral formations penetrated.Current diamond drilling operations at Moonta and Wallaroo Mines, carried out by the South Australian Department of Mines, have attained remarkable results in completely eliminating core-loss by the use of a special double-tube core barreI.It is considered that assays of borehole samples taken with this special barrel have a reliability comparable, if not superior to that of similarly situated mine samples and, provided they are spaced satisfactorily, can be used as, a basis for calculating tonnage and grade. Formerly, with only partial core-recoveries, positive borehole results on narrow irregular lodes, such as those in the Moonta and Wallaroo Mines, could be accepted mainly as indications of the presence of mineralization, and could have only a limited bearing on estimates of ore reserves.The value of this special double-tube core-barrel lies In the fact that it guarantees good core recovery and, therefore, good samples, and eliminates the need for sludge-sampling, which is prone to give unreliable assay results from several causes, such as gravity concentration in the bottom of the hole and return water losses which cannot be overcome.In view of the increasing demand for minerals and the probability that the search for them will be carried on largely by boring, it is felt that it would be of interest and value to direct the attention of mining engineers to core-recovery results obtained by diamond drilling plants in South Australia and the features of the special core-barrel, designed by the writer, which has made this possible. Also, the writer is desirous of placing on record two other core-recovery devices designed to extract accurate samples in relatively soft or unconsolidated formations. The latter are used with percussion and calyx plants, respectively and their value has been proven on phosphate rock and coal deposits in South Australia.

To obtain the combustion process of a coal fire, a high-temperature programmed system is used to simulate the spontaneous combustion process of fresh and weathered coals. Both fresh coal and weathered coals from Liulingou, Inner Mongolia, China, were used to examine the gas releases from constant temperature to 650°C. Moreover, gas release rate was used to calculate the characteristic temperatures. The results showed the coal samples lasted to oxidise under high temperatures, and released plenty of heat to assist self-heating. The humic acid contained inside the weathered coal went through thermal decomposition as temperature rising and generated gases. This resulted in increasing concentrations of CO, CO2, CH4, C2H4, and C2H6. Changes of CH4, C2H4, and C2H6 gases were also similar. For weathered coal, concentrations of three gases were kept in balance under low temperatures, increased rapidly with the temperature rising. After the ignition temperature, the concentration of hydrocarbon was reduced. In addition, particle size affected coal spontaneous combustion. Coal samples with less than 0.9 mm in size produced much more CO than others. The Otago and Southland lignite deposits represent by far the largest known fossil energy resources in New Zealand. Despite their size they have remained virtually untouched since exploration in the 1970s and 1980s defined their extent. In total there is an estimated 10.9 billion tonnes of lignite in 13 defined fields in Otago and Southland. Much of the exploration work only targeted seams at shallow depth and it is highly probable that there are further resources at depth in the fields that have been explored to date.   L&M Lignite Limited (L&M) holds exploration permits over a number of lignite deposits and is currently engaged in pre-feasibility studies to investigate the potential of the lignites for gasification. L&M is focussing its studies on the Hawkdun and Ashers-Waituna deposits. Coal quality in these deposits, particularly Ashers-Waituna, is highly suitable for gasification. In total the two deposits contain 1647 Mt of potentially recoverable lignite. L&M has engaged a variety of consultants to progress this project. The Hawkdun and Ashers-Waituna deposit databases have been re-evaluated and the resources remodelled. Further drilling has been carried out and the coal quality database has been expanded. The baseline project is to develop a mine to feed a plant that will produce liquids, specifically low-sulphur diesel and naptha, using the Fischer-Tropsch process. The project anticipates a staged development of 10 000 barrel per day units, each requiring mining at the rate of 12 700 tonnes of lignite per day. The production of other products including ammonia-urea, methanol, hydrogen and electric power is also under study.

Current spontaneous combustion index parameters such as SHT, CPT/RIT and R70 self-heating rate all have deficiencies that need clarifying from a risk management perspective. In some instances they can produce a false negative evaluation and in others they can produce a false positive evaluation. These tests all use a relative rating scheme that does not provide any indication of the time it takes for a spontaneous combustion event to develop, nor do they consider the moderating influence of moisture present in the coal on self-heating rate in the low temperature oxidation region. This is viewed as a major deficiency since the true self-heating behaviour of broken coal is primarily a function of time that is governed by the interaction of the initial boundary conditions (initial ambient temperature and moisture state) with the reactivity of the coal (both intrinsic coal reactivity and accelerated self-heating from reactive pyrite if present). The current index tests are also not appropriate for assessment of coalmine immediate roof and floor rocks.CITATION:Beamish, B B and Theiler, J, 2017. Structures formed during ductile deformation have been reactivated during the later brittle mineralisation process. Two generations of folding are classified as: early recumbent megascopic FI folds and FI shears which transpose the hinge regions, and later upright F2 folds. S1 is folded about F2 folds which contain axial planar S2 crenulation cleavage. Vergence relationships between S1 and bedding indicate that many of the mineralised structures occupy sites of FI folds which have acted as plumbing systems for later gold mineralisation (eg Blackwater mine). The Globe-Progress gold mineralisation is localised by a major jog formed by sinistral strike-slip movement on two FI fault segments and mineralisation also occurs in smaller jogs along strike (eg Sir Francis Drake, Happy Valley-Merrijigs, Cumberland).   The lodes of ribbon quartz which exploit the FI shears and local bedding planes, are inferred to have mostly formed after the peak of metamorphism, possibly related to the emplacement of Carboniferous granites. This was followed by a sequence of vein deposition and wallrock alteration which consists of quartz-As/Fe sulphides ? carbonate - stibnite ¦ trace base metal sulphides and Bi-sulphosalts ? illitic clay/sericite-chlorite. Gold at Globe-Progress is mainly encapsulated in arsenopyrite. At Blackwater, free high fineness gold occurs in partings in lode quartz with late sericite-chlorite. The above sequence of events is comparable to that encountered in many intrusion-related gold systems throughout the Southwest Pacific region. There is a spatial relationship between gold mineralisation and dykes variably described as diabase, dolerite or lamprophyre. Alkaline rocks occur in many Pacific rim and older goldfields and may possibly be related to a magmatic source for gold mineralisation.

Recent, detailed mapping, (Allibone, 1986; Peden, in prep.) of north west Stewart Island, has shown that the Rakeahua Granite (Watters et al, 1968), is comprised of a wide range of granitoid bodies ranging from diorite to leucogranite. As a result of the wide variation in granitoids Allibone (1986), suggests renaming of the Rakeahua Granite to the Rakeahua Granitoid Complex. Names were also proposed for the individual granitoid bodies mapped.

The early history of the mine is traced from the beginning of shaft sinking in 1886 to the purchase by the Broken Hill Proprietary Co. Ltd. in 1949. A necessary preliminary to mechanisation of the Borehole Seam was development of the Young Wallsend seam, andthis development is described. Surface reorganisation and coal handling arrangements are dealt with in detail. Then follows a description of the Borehole Seam mechanisation, the provision of power supply for this purpose, arid pumping arrangements in themine.INTRODUCTIONStockton Borehole Colliery is in the Parish of Teralba, between the townships of Teralba and Boolaroo, and about 12 miles from Newcastle. The colliery holding, a freehofd area of 2,560 acres, was apparently an original land grant when acquired by Teralba Co-operative Coal Company who decided to mine for coal and named the mine "Teralba Colliery." Shaft sinking was commenced in 1886 but was delayed by financial and water troubles to such an extent that it was not until 1901 that the Borehole Seam was reached.Coal was won until 1904 using a single 16 ft. diameter shaft, ventilation being achieved by means of a wooden boxing down one side of the shaft. This collapsed, and operations ceased until the mine was taken over in 1906 by a company known as "Borehole Colliery Limited," the principal stockholder being the Stockton Coal Company. It renamed the mine "Borehole Colliery." This new company immediately commenced sinking a 13 ft. diameter air shaft. In 1908 the Stocktol1 Colliery at Stockton was abandoned, and during the following year much of its equipment was transferred to Borehole Colliery. The general goal of passive acid mine drainage (AMD) treatment is to reduce levels of acidity and metals to acceptable levels. Most treatment systems use either an oxidising or a reducing strategy. In oxidising systems, alkalinity is added along with dissolved oxygen; in reducing systems, dissolved oxygen is removed (if present) and then alkalinity is added. It is recommended that small-scale field trials be conducted as part of the methodology of selecting the best remediation strategy at AMD sites. Following successful field trials at the Sullivan Mine AMD, the Pike River Coal Company (PRCC) has shown foresight by using the same system to treat AMD generated as a result of taking a bulk sample of coal at the Pike River coal field. The system reduced acidity by 100 per cent, iron by 99 per cent, aluminium by 96 per cent, nickel by 95 per cent, manganese by 51 per cent and zinc by 99 per cent. The success of this field trial suggests that a system using a reducing strategy may be appropriate for the Pike River Adit AMD site.

Drill blasting is a widely used method for rock fragmentation in mining, quarrying and construction industries. Environmental effects such as air shocks, dust, flying rocks and ground vibration are unavoidable results and undesired effects of blasting. Among these ground vibrations can have a damaging effect and may influence on long distances. Therefore various researchers have developed mathematical models to predict ground vibration after blasting. These models take into account the amount of explosive, distance and several coefficients related to the field under investigation. The developed models to predict ground vibration may yield different results for the same case. Selection of the most suitable model requires engineering judgment and evaluation of models. At this point, a computerised system helps the engineer to evaluate and select the most suitable model in order to design and plan a blasting pattern. The safe charge of explosive and magnitude of vibration after blasting should be predicted beforehand. Therefore a computer program namely 'prediction of blast induced vibration' (P-BIV) has been developed. This paper introduces and presents a computer program (P-BIV) which includes the set of models developed to estimate ground vibration to provide blasting engineers a tool to determine the amount of explosive for safe blasting.

New Zealand China Clays produces a unique halloysite clay product at Matauri Bay, Northland.   The company has licences over four deposits that were derived from the weathering of rhyodacite domes. Clay is mined and processed from two of the four deposits and is refined using a complex process based on gravity separation.   The product is almost entirely exported to niche markets in 24 countries. The main market is the fine ceramic industry where the product is used as a component in the manufacture of high quality porcelain and bone china bodies. The use of halloysite in these bodies gives the manufacturer the ability to achieve high whiteness and translucency. The other major market is for use in technical ceramics, where the product is sought after due to its high purity, fine particle size and stability at high temperatures.

Iron ore in the Middleback Range area has a density and susceptibility contrast with adjacent rocks, and gravity and magnetic methods are applicable to exploration for it. The gravity method is satisfactory whether the ore mineral is hematite, magnetite, or limonite; the magnetic method is suitable for detecting ores which contain magnetite, such as some hematite ore, magnetite ore, and possible ore in the form of magnetite-bearing schists. jaspilites, and carbonate rocks.Geophysical exploration began in 1948 and is still in progress. The methods which have been used are aeromagnetic (83 per cent), ground magnetic (13 per cent), gravity (3 per cent), and others (1 per cent). Ground magnetic surveys have been made wherever aeromagnetic surveys recorded large anomalies. The gravity method is being used to investigate those parts of the area considered most favourable for ore occurrence.Qualitative and quantitative interpretation of the geophysical data has been made and the rocks causing selected anomalies tested by bores.Magnetite in the Middleback Group rocks produces the major magnetic anomalies in the area. The average magnetite content of magnetite-jaspilite, which is the commonest rock type, is 33 per cent by weight and that of magnetite-carbonate at the Iron Duke-Iron Duchess is 50 per cent. These rock types also contain hematite and the average total iron content of the former is 35 per cent and of the latter 50 per cent.INTRODUCTIONThe geology and iron ore resources of the Middleback Range area were described by Miles (1954). Since 1954, much drilling, mapping, and quarrying has been done but there is no published report of this work.The rocks which constitute the Middleback Range, Camel Hill-Cooyerdoo line, Katunga Hill-Iron Knob, and Ash Range (Fig. 1) belong to the Middleback Group of Middle Precambrian or late Archaean age.
