Pyrite has been subjected to xanthate adsorption experiments in order to determine the nature of adsorption. The identification of adsorbed species by means of IR spectroscopy, as well as UV, shows that the dixanthogen adsorption is undoubtedly predominant on pyrite surface. The rest potential measured in a xanthate solution coincides with the redox potential of the xanthate-dixanthogen couple. Considering all the factors together, the adsorption mechanism of dixanthogen on pyrite has been proposed as This mechanism is consistent with the "passive" character of pyrite. From the measurement of the redox potential of the xanthate-dixanthogen couple in the homologous series, a rule similar to that for surface tensions proposed by Traube is also applicable. The polarization experiments were conducted on pyrite in a solution containing xanthate. In the anodic polarization, xanthate is observed to oxidize to dix- anthogen, which depresses oxygen evolution on py rite at higher potential levels. In spite of the importance of the presence of pyrite in the flotation of sulfide minerals, not many studies have been made on the xanthate-pyrite system in the absence of an activator or a depressant. In an early study by Gaudin and Wilkinson,' it was pointed out that no ferric xanthate was formed on a pyrite surface, while in another study Gaudin and his collaborators2 proved the formation of a very small amount of ferric xanthate. Afterwards, Gaudin et al.3 studied the pyrite-xanthate system with a radiometric technique and found indications of the presence of adsorbed dixanthogen on pyrite surfaces. Mamiya4 studied the flotation behavior of the pyrite-xanthate system and also suggested the possibility of dixanthogen. Recently, Fuerstenau and his coworkers at The Colorado School of Mines5 studied the role of dixanthogen in the xanthate flotation of pyrite and discussed the problem in terms of such properties as oxidation potential, zeta potential, flotation recovery, pH of solution, etc. However, the mechanism of dixanthogen adsorption at the pyrite-water interface is not yet understood. This paper is concerned with an electrochemical in-vestigation through which the mechanism of dixanthogen adsorption on pyrite is interpreted. THE Disco* process for the production of low temperature coke and its immediate predecessor, the Wisner or Carbocite process have been described in the voluminous literature of low temperature carbonization.1 This paper will describe the development of the process from the first attempt at commercial operation by the American Gas and Electric Co. at Philo, Ohio, Yn the 1920's to the successful operation in 1949 by the Disco Co., a division of the Pittsburgh Consolidation Coal Co., of the 1000-ton per day Disco plant near Pittsburgh, see Figs. 1-2. In the 1924 coal industry depression following the hectic post World War I expansion, the northern Appalachian, unionized bituminous coal fields were affected first and foremost, and Western Pennsylvania as hard as any. Competitive market pressure was heaviest on the lower grades of steam coals, notably the from the Panhandle district where ash and sulphur are inherently higher than in the same Pittsburgh coal bed to the east along the rivers. The firm structure of Panhandle coal while favoring the prepared sizes, depressed the usefulness and value of the finer sizes. Panhandle slack and nut slack were marketed with difficulty at consistent, and at times considerable, loss. Many solutions were suggested, and the Pittsburgh Coal Co. investigated all. Lower delivered prices through lower mine costs and more advantageous freight rates were obvious goals, but equally obvious were the difficulties of self attainment of either in any substantial measure. Selling Btu's in pipes was abandoned as an idea after a thorough study of the economics of distribution of what was then, and is even now, the only developed continuous process of complete gasification of bituminous coal-producer gas. Although the coal company purchased huge blocks of electric power, it sold not a car of coal to the central power stations. Public utilities controlled the markets for electric current, and it was found that no matter at how low a cost current might be put on the bus bars by the coal company, distribution to its widely scattered coal mines made such an enterprise practically impossible. Consolidation of underground operations and a huge modernization program of mining operations in the 1920's were but preparation for the introduction of mechanical cleaning of the coal for market, particularly the smaller sizes of steam, gas, and by-

THE Roan Antelope concentrator was originally designed with a nominal milling capacity of 6000 tons of copper ore per day but this was subsequently considerably exceeded. In broad outline the plant consisted of two No. 30 McCully gyratory crushers for coarse crushing, five 5 1/2-ft Standard Symons crushers in open circuit for secondary crushing, ten No. 98 Marcy ball mills arranged in five sections, each two-mill section with primary and secondary Dorr classifiers for two-stage grinding. One stage of flotation roughing was followed by two stages of cleaning, all in airlift type pneumatic flotation machines, with the final concentrates filtered on Oliver drum filters. Tailing was thickened in a 250-ft Dorr traction type thickener before pumping to the tailing dam. Concentrating operations commenced in June 1931, on the completion of the first two ball-milling sections and output was increased during the next few months as the remaining sections were finished. From the start, very few technical difficulties were experienced but a number of evolutionary changes have been made as a result of operating experience and the availability of improved equipment. These have resulted in plant and ore-flow alterations although the general scheme of ore treatment remains substantially as before. The main changes to date were the installation of a new crushing plant at Storke shaft, some 7000 ft west of the original Beatty shaft; the completion of a two-stage secondary crushing plant; an increase of 20 pct in ball-milling capacity; a change-over from pneumatic to a mechanical type of flotation machine for flotation roughing; the reduction of flotation cleaning from two stages to one stage. ORE TREATED Typically the ore treated consists of metamorphosed shales and sandstones with shales as the principal mineral-bearing rock carrying chalcocite, bornite and chalcopyrite as the main copper minerals. Chalcocite predominated in the original eastern end of the ore body but there is a pronounced trend to an increased proportion of the copper-iron sulphides as mining proceeds westward. Although the ore can be described as soft, this advantage is offset by the extremely fine dissemination of the copper minerals which calls for a high degree of comminution of the ore (90 pct minus-200 mesh Tyler standard) to give a reasonably satisfactory separation of mineral from gangue. Latterly, there has been a tendency for the ore to become harder as shown by a reduction in the ball-milling rate from a previous figure of over goo tons per ball-mill day to the present output of some 800 tons. Chalcopyrite is not so finely disseminated and has also proved more amenable to flotation than chalcocite. BACKGROUND Foreign investment has been a major factor in bringing about the substantial mining industries of Chile, Peru, Bolivia, Venezuela, Brasil and Guyana. But economic nationalism and sentiment against foreiqn domination of vital national industries grew in the 1960s and most major mining projects were transferred into state owner ship. Among the state mining enterprises formed were CODELCO - Chile, MINERO-PERU/ CENTRCMIN - Peru, CCMIBOL - Bolivia (in 1952), Hierro-PERU, GUY-BAU/BIDCO - Guyana, etc. New investment during that time was discouraged because it was subject to the restrictive conditions of the investment regulations of the Andean-Pact, a grouping of Chile, Bolivia, Peru, Ecuador, Venezuela and Colombia. The philisophy was that mineral resources were to be developed exclusively by national enterprises. Essential foreign inputs had to be acquired "depackaged" as separate purchases of equipment and technical assistance services. As a result of the worldwide economic recession which hit the mining industries in 1980-1982, many projects that were viable in 1970 were not developed by the new state enterprises due to lack of capital, managerial and technical abilities and due to problems with marketing. As a consequence of the long-term decline of metal prices, governments experienced difficulty in getting investment organized through national or foreign enterprises and have had to face up to the trade-offs between national control and active mineral development. A change has since taken place in governmental policies. The 1981 Peruvian mining law, the 1982 mining law of Uruguay, the 1979/1980 mineral promotion laws of Argentina, all witness the gradual shifting of emphasis from restriction to promotion. The investment rules of the Andean Pact have been progressively softened through national regulation and today are more or less irrelevant. Nationalizations and forced renegotiations have not occurred in the last few years. Countries have gone to great lengths (without much success) to re-attract foreign investment on terms that accommodate the political sensitivities of the South American countries and the practical requirements of investors and financiers. For this analysis, three contracts have been selected which reflect this accommodation in three South American countries, where miner a1 production plays a major role in the national economy. These con tracts reflect both the attitudes and traditions of the individual countries, but also mark the shift in mineral investment policies that has taken place. EL INDIO AGREEMENT The 1977 investment agreement between Chile and St. Joe Minerals marked a dramatic relationship between Chile and foreign mining investor s. In Chile, mining of copper has played a major role in the country's history. Large scale copper mining was initiated and developed by Kennecott and Anaconda. The nationalization of these two companies under the Allende government in July 1971 started a wave of nationalizations of foreign-held mining and petroleum operations since then in many parts of the world. The military government supported the new Chilean state mining companies ((30DELCO and ENMI) , but it also attempted to accelerate mineral development by prom ting foreign private investment, thus reversing the nationalistic policies followed by the Allende and the preceding Frei government. M. A. SCHEIL (presented in written form).-Messrs. Franks, Binder and Brown are to be congratulated for the splendid paper that they have presented. We have not made stress-corrosion tests with the cantilever type of specimen which they describe, but it is well known that a uniform stress across a certain portion of the gage length can be obtained with such a specimen. This type of specimen would appear quite expensive to make. The writer was interested in the authors' remarks concerning the erratic results obtained from specimens with cold sheared edges. It might be of general interest to record here some results we obtained with annealed sheet N4 in. thick of type 304 stainless steel. After specimen No. 4 had been exposed 65 days without any signs of cracking we applied a strain gage and measured the stress as 25,810 psi. This value is considerably higher than we find for some of the type 347 stainless alloys and suggests that 18-8 might have a different threshold value for stress-corrosion cracking than 18-8 columbium. The test data in Table I show that strain caused by cold work or polishing has a pronounced effect in lowering the time for failure. In my paper I showed values of 8 hr. and 17 hr. to stress crack cold-rolled type 301 stainless steel stressed beyond the yield point. This steel contained 8.31

The Negaunee mine is at the east end of the Marquette Range, in the city of Negaunee, on the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Iron ore was first discovered on this property in 1883 by diamond drilling. A shaft was sunk soon afterward. and the mine has been worked continuously ever since. The total shipments from 1887 to Jan. I, 1945, were 20,417,587 long tons. The mine was taken over by the present operators, The Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Co., in 1903. During the past four years, 1941 to 1944 inclusive, the property has produced an average of nearly a million tons a year, and has employed more than 400 men. Geology The ore body at the Negaunee mine lies in a large syncline dipping about 15° to the west, the ore coming to ledge at the east end of the trough. The ore occurs in the Negaunee formation of the middle Huronian age, which consists of ferruginous cherts and slates through which intrusions of diorite have occurred. Although these intrusions of diorite have an important bearing on the formation of ore on the range, they are not important in this ore body. Some faulting has taken place along the diorite intrusions, or dikes as they are called locally, and also other faults are known to exist across the formation. These faults do not complicate either mining or development of the ore body. The footwall consists of jasper underlain with Siamo slate; the hanging wall is jasper and ferruginous chert. Fig. I shows a typical cross section of the ore body. The ore body is quite regular, about 120 ft. thick in the middle of the syncline and thinning out toward both sides of the fold. Its width ranges from 400 to 800 ft., the average being about 600 ft. The footwall is uniform in dip and strike, but irregular lenses of ore often extend 50 to 75 ft. up into the overlying jasper capping. Method of Mining Ore in the Negaunee mine has been mined by top slicing almost exclusively since 1903 This method of mining has been employed because it is especially adapted to the size and shape of the Negaunee ore body, and to the soft, sticky nature of the ore as well as the generally soft, broken jasper capping. Development The ore body has been developed from six different levels with intervals varying between loo and 125 ft. On the average, the dip causes a horizontal offset of 350 ft. per level, and under these circumstances it has been necessary to carry on considerable development in rock to make available the ore lying along the north and east footwalls. This is not as disadvantageous as might be supposed, because of reduced pressure and the accompanying saving in maintenance costs. The development of the

During the past several years the steel casting industry has made studies of heavy castings in which the test bar has been taken from heavy sections rather than from attached or separately cast coupons. It has been noted that the ductility properties of these heavy sections are often lower than those normally expected. Such lowered ductility is usually accompanied by a spotty test bar fracture and the ductility values often can be greatly improved if a low-temperature aging treatment is given to the casting. A loss of ductility of this type is considered "abnormal," since it is not accompanied by an increase of tensile strength or hardness, and "temporary" when the ductility can be restored by aging, The cure of such an abnormal condition represents a real improvement in the quality of the steel. Some hundreds of previous investigations, largely qualitative in nature, have established beyond reasonable doubt that hydrogen is normally present in newly manufactured steel and that this gas, in small amounts, can cause a temporary ab- normal loss of ductility. The commonly observed association of high gas content and low ductility has given strong evidence for the presumption that hydrogen, possibly assisted by other gases, is the primary cause of the low ductility observed. Accordingly, the Steel Founders' Society of America has, since Nov. I, 1944, sponsored investigations at Battelle Memorial Institute whose primary objective is to obtain quantitative information on the relation of the amount of hydrogen and nitrogen in steel, together with associated methods of steelmaking and treatment, to low-ductility effects and porosity. In order that these investigations might proceed on a quantitative basis, hydrogen analyses of a precision considerably higher than any previously reported in the literature were necessary. 'The method chosen was selected entirely on the basis that it had the highest probability of freedom from uncontrollable errors and will be described in detail in another publication.' Briefly, the method used consisted of the hot extraction of solid pieces of steel weighing from 45 to 50 g in a highly evacuated quartz tube maintained at 1050°C (1925°F) for a period of approximately 40 hr. The greatest precautions were taken to eliminate blanks and insure a sound gas-collection system. vacuum and temperature conditions were maintained automatically. The effects of tin on steel have become increasingly important because of the necessity of using poorly detinned scrap, tin cans, and terne plate, in the open hearth. Since a tin can contains about 1.5 per cent tin, it would be possible to have up to 0.75 per cent tin in steel made with a 50 per cent scrap charge. In order to use tin-containing scrap, it is necessary to know the effect of tin on various grades of steel. The following investigation is by no means comprehensive but covers a number of steels in which tin content is important. Published Work A number of investigations of the effects of tin on rolling quality and physical properties have been published. It has been found that tin increases strength and hardness and reduces ductility and notched impact resistance. The decrease' in ductility and notched impact resistance becomes more marked as the carbon decreases. McKimml found no change in Olsen ductility, Kockwell hardness, yield strength, tensile strength or elongation in cold-reduced strip containing up to 0.124 per cent tin. A tin content of 0.1j per cent gave difficulties in rolling and increased the hardness but 0.21 per cent tin showed no change in properties from material containing very little tin. No explanation of this contradiction is offered. Andrew and Peile2 investigated steels containing 0.10 to 0.25 per cent carbon and up to 0.63 per cent tin. They found an increase in tensile strength of from 100 to 200 lb. per sq. in. for each 0.01 per cent tin on normalized samples. The elongation and reduction of area were decreased and the notched impact resistance was reduced markedly. Quenched and drawn samples did not show embrittling if water-quenched from the draw temperature of 1148°F. (620°C.). They could find no evidence of tin under the microscope. Whitely and Braithwaite3 investigated the effect of tin on rail steel containing 0.55 to 0.60 per cent carbon. They found that 0.08 per cent tin caused a marked decrease in elongation, notched impact resistance and the degree of bend. The tensile strength was increased in some tests and not in others. Bolsover and Barraclough4 investigated the effect of tin up to 0. 50 per cent on a 0.35 per cent carbon steel and on several alloy steels with from 0.30 to 0.40 per cent carbon. They found a comparatively uniform decrease in notched impact resistance with increasing tin on quenched and drawn samples. If the samples were quenched from the drawing temperature or reheated to the drawing temperature and quenched, the embrittling was much less severe. Steels containing molybdenum suffered much less embrittlement than other steels. Experimental WoRk Effect of Tin on Low-carbon Rimmed Steel Increasing quantities of tin were added to four ingots of a heat of the following ladle analysis: carbon, 0.08 per cent; manganese, 0.39; phosphorus, 0.009; sulphur, 0.025.

SCHEUCH, Chicago, Ill.-Since starting up our Hawthorne copper wire plant we have found that wire bars from certain suppliers perform quite differently from those of other suppliers. In attempting to evaluate these bars, we made cross-sections, and in making these cross-sections we found considerable variation in the crystal structure. Indications were that there was some preference in the type of crystal structure. In attempting to find the reason for that we discussed it with the various producers and-also reviewed the literature. Mr. DeWald was assigned to determine the various factors that enter into copper wire bar crystal structure, on the basis that the product was a horizontally cast wire bar of practically identical composition and of recognized good composition for the present quality product sold in the market. Mr. DeWald has asked me to say that he should have made reference to Mr. Dalzell's paper on a theory concerning gases in refined copper. D. K. CRAMPTON, Marion, Conn. (written discussion).-Mr. DeWald has set forth an interesting and thorough exposition of the factors controlling macrostructure of this material. It is particularly interesting to us as it somewhat parallels work we have done on macrostructure of round copper billets for piercing into tubes. Our findings as to the effect of the several variables on macrostructure check Mr. DeWald's. The general principles underlying the two are precisely the same. The fact that we worked with copper deoxidized with phosphorous instead of tough-pitch copper, and round billets cast on end instead of wire bars, does not influence the results. We have found that round billets cast so as to produce large radial grains have greater soundness and density than those with a fine macrostructure. Further, and more important, we have found that the billets with large radial grains show markedly different performance on piercing from those having a fine equiaxed structure. With a given temperature of billet and adjustment of piercing machine, the coarse-grained material requires appreciably lower power for piercing and goes through the operation inn appreciably less time. These two differences are of sufficient commercial importance to warrant exercise of great care in maintaining the coarse structure. It seems probable that much the same phenomenon should hold in the hot rolling of tough-pitch wire bars. We would expect that, other things being equal, the coarse-grained wire bars would roll more readily and require less power than fine-grained ones. Moreover, we believe the differences in initial structure of the wire bars should be largely eliminated in the hot rolling process and during the subsequent drawing and annealing, of wire would be entirely eradicated.

This paper discusses the results of an investigation made to develop a method of combatting corrosion of subsurface oil-well equipment caused by brines containing hydrogen sulphide. Carbon monoxide, aldehydes, and certain cyanide compounds were found by laboratory tests to effectively inhibit corrosion of steel by sulphide brines. Experiments were made for one year in eight wells in West Texas fields using formaldehyde as an inhibitor. It was found that the inhibitor treatment successfully prevented the severe corrosion previously experienced in these wells, and effected important net savings in operating costs. Introduction Corrosion of oil-field equipment has long been a problem in areas producing sour crudes. These areas include the major fields of Arkansas, Western Kansas, West Texas and New Mexico. Corrosion in these fields is caused primarily by the chemical action of hydrogen sulphide in the presence of water and by electric currents entering the wells through flow lines. Hydrogen sulphide is noncorrosive to iron or steel in the absence of water but under the usual conditions prevailing in oil wells where more or less water is present, hydrogen sulphide is very corrosive. This type of corrosion occurs over the pH range below 9, which includes all natural oil-field brines. If air is present in addition to hydrogen sulphide and water, corrosion proceeds at an extremely rapid rate. It was reported several years ago that a string of oil-well tubing was literally dissolved within 50 days where an air lift was used on a well producing considerable water and hydrogen sulphide. Air is generally absent in wells producing sour crude. After hydrogen sulphide corrosion starts, it proceeds with increasing severity and its correction becomes progressively more difficult. This characteristic of sulphide corrosion has been attributed to the formation of galvanic couples between the iron and steel equipment on one hand and the products of corrosion on the other.' Severe corrosion of subsurface oil-well equipment leads to a multitude of troubles. In addition to destruction of costly equipment, producing sands often are damaged by flooding with water leaking through corroded casing; bad mechanical conditions may develop in a well due to obstructions caused by corroded equipment lost in the hole, or partly collapsed casing; pumping operations are interfered with, and severe emulsification problems may result from the homogenizing action of corroded balls and seats.% A typical case of severe corrosion caused by hydrogen sulphide was reported in Howard County, Texas, where it was necessary to pull tubing once a week to repair leaks after the tubing had been in use for only one year. The objective of this chapter is to discuss the interrelationship between industrial minerals and chemical manufacturing. It is intended to supplement rather than duplicate the commodity chapters. Particular emphasis is given to the pertinent chemical element and to market factors. Condensing this broad subject into a few pages of this handbook permits treating only the most important elements derived from industrial minerals. Hydrocarbons, which quantitatively dominate as raw materials for the chemical industry, are omitted, as are the metallic elements and the minerals covered in other "use" chapters such as phosphorous, potassium and nitrogen for fertilizers, and titanium dioxide for pigments. The remaining six elements of major importance are: boron, bromine, chlorine, fluorine, sodium, and sulfur. These elements are treated individually under separate headings. Table I (Jones, 1973) affords an overview of the main industrial minerals, the chemical products derived from them, and end uses of the products. Salt brines have particular importance as raw material sources for the chemical industry. Table 2 (Anon., 1967) is a chart of the chemical compounds derived from four types of brines: (1) Owens Lake-type brines, which are sources of boron and sodium compounds; (2) Midland-type brines, from which bromine, iodine, and chlorides of calcium, magnesium, potassium and sodium are derived; (3) Searles Lake-type brines, yielding boron, bromine, lithium, magnesium, potassium, and sodium compounds; and (4) Silver Peak-type brines, produced mainly for lithium. Market Attributes Some of the important market traits common to industrial minerals used by the chemical industry are listed below. 1. They are international commodities, such as fluorspar and sulfur, which largely move to foreign consumers. 2. Grade, and freedom from deleterious elements are important factors affecting their usability in chemical processes. An example is salt (NaCl) used in electrolysis where ultrapure evaporated salt is required to meet rigid specifications. 3. Purified products take on the characteristics of specialty items and command a distinctly higher price than the basic commodity from which they are derived. 4. In practically all cases, chemical users require some sort of cleaning or beneficiation of the naturally-occurring mineral to bring it to specification, and individual specifications may vary from user to user for essentially the same use. 5. In some instances it is necessary to strike a balance between what the vendor can supply and what the buyer requires, with the result that specifications have to be eased to afford the needed materials in marginal cases. 6. Because they tend to be bulk commodities, low cost for handling and transportation are important and such costs may limit the area from which a chemical user can draw his supply. For example, fluorspar from China and Thailand normally goes to Japan, while South African fluorspar can go either to Japan or to the US. 7. Shipments are usually in bulk and frequently in multiple-car, full-trainload or full-shipload lots to reduce transport costs, which in turn may require large terminal investment facilities.

PRECEDING chapters on thermochemistry, and the reactions in and between metal and slag phases in the bath of the furnace tend to emphasize the equilibrium or "static" conditions in the furnace and process, such as the total amounts of heat from fuel combustion or from certain bath reactions, the concentration relationships between slag and metal at the steady state for certain reactions, and the like. Such data are obtained essentially by means of the logic of thermo- dynamics, which helps to determine the energy change between initial and final states in a process as well as to define its equilibrium or steady-state condition, but which is not concerned with the rate of change in the process or with the mechanisms or path followed between initial and final states. These questions of just "how it works" and "how fast" belong to the kinetic aspect of any process; their answers are helpful in speeding up or slowing down and thus controlling intelligently its operation, and also to understand certain natural limitations which are especially important in many high-temperature processes. The kinetic aspects of interest here comprise mainly (1) the flow of gases through the furnace system, (2) the flow of heat in the system, and (3) the mechanisms and rate factors in the various chemical reactions. A really adequate discussion of the first two subjects would require at least three or four times the space available here; it has been tried, therefore, in this and the next chapter to outline but a few fundamentals necessary to an intelligent approach and to indicate some of the conditions of heat and gas flow more or less peculiar to the open hearth, since several good general discussions on these subjects may be found in the literature.(1) For the designer of open-hearth furnaces, the principles of gas flow are of paramount importance.(2,3,4,5) They are also important to the operation of the process, however, at least to the extent of a general qualitative picture of the movement of gases in the system, which is all that is attempted here.

This paper is a description of the opera-tion and results of a Humphreys Spiral Silt Cleaning Plant at the Powderly Colliery 01 The Hudson Coal Co. during the first nine months of operation and follows a preliminary description given at the .Institute cite Institute in May, 1947, in a paper titled "Preparation of Anthracite Silt for Boiler Fuel in a Humphreys Spiral Test Plant" by H. H. Otto, V. H. Wilson and W. L. Dennen. This plant is considered a full size op-erating test plant and, like all new plants, numerous minor changes in the methods of operation have been made from time to time to secure the results desired. Views of the silt preparation plant and of the screening house are given in Fig I and 2. This plant consists of 48 spirals in 8 batteries of 6 spirals each, 36 of which were to be operated as primary spirals and the remaining 12 as secondary spirals. A brief description of the plant and its operation follows. The only material cleaned at the plant during 1947 was that carried in the underflow from the Thickener which han-dles the Breaker waste water. This under-flow, amounting to approximately 2000 gpm of water and containing 12.6 pct of solids, is pumped to vibrating screens where the plus 3/16-in. material is removed. (Fig 3). This oversize material drops into a pocket from which it is trucked to the run-of-mine tipple for re-preparation.

The behavior of gas-storage reservoirs subject to water drive is investigated through analog simulation on an electronic differential analyzer. The simulation technique developed on an LM-10 computer permits the prediction of reservoir volume or pressure resulting from the movement of water in the surrounding aquifer. The method developed on the analog computer consists of setting up an appropriate transfer-function circuit and feeding the arbitrary time-varying boundary conditions as an input signal. The input may be specified as gas reservoir pressure, pore volume or the water flux. Several cases studied include an isolated gas reservoir on a limited aquifer, interference among three reservoirs adjacent to a common aquifer and the growth of gas-storage volume on an aquifer. It is concluded that the method developed on an electronic differential analyzer provides an excellent technique to simulate and investigate the behavior of gas reservoirs subject to water drive. The agreement between the reservoir performance as predicted from the simulation technique and as measured from actual field data is found to be better than the range usually encountered in predicting water-drive behavior. INTRODUCTION It is generally known that some gas-storage reservoirs are located on top of blanket sands of large extent, saturated with brine called aquifers. Because the volume of the body of water associated with aquifers is usually very large and water is compressible, the cyclic pressure variations encountered in normal storage service inevitably cause unsteady, compressible flow conditions in the adjacent aquifers. The solution to radial diffusivity equation for a limited aquifer for constant terminal conditions has been know111 since the early 1930's. The solution for the constant terminal conditions for an infinite aquifer was puhlished in 1949.2 The proldem of handling the unsteady flow of water through a porous medium with time-varying boundary conditions has been studied by many investigators through the use of graphical,3 digital4 computing techniques or on an R-C type of electrical analog called a reservoir analyzer.5 The digital computer performs a series of arithmetic calculations to superimpose the solutions of constant terminal conditions, while the R-C type of analyzer permits the simulation of the continuous medium by means of "lumped-cell" electrical resistance and capacitance elements based on finite-difference approximations. The graphical method is based on the convolution integral solution of the partial differential equalion. The purpose of the present study was to simulate the behavior of an aquifer on a general-purpose, electronic differential analyzer to obtain the influx of water or the change in pressure at the reservoir continuous1r and quickly. The use of the electronic differential analyzer was based on well known solutions for the constant terminal conditions already available in the literature.2,6-8 THEORETICAL DEVELOPMENT MODEL. The gas reservoir (R) is described in relation to an aquifer in Fig. 1. The permeability and porosity of an aquifer sand, the viscosity of the brine, and the compressibility of the brine and the formation are assumed to be constant. It further is assumed that the blanket sand is not thick enough to give appreciable vertical pressure distribution. The model in consideration is circular with radial geometry. THE subject of electric signals for the despatching off mining cages through shafts has received cousiderable attention recently from various mining companies. The Anaconda Copper Mining Co. has found it necessary to develop a system that is reliable, safe and simple in operation, and easy to repair. The movement of all mine cages or skips is under the direction of a station tender, who rides on the cages when men or supplies are being lowered or raised. When ore is hoisted, he is stationed at a skip pocket for loading and despatching the skips. For the station tender's use, two signal systems are installed in each hoisting compartment, and he is the only employee authorized to use them. One system is known as the "AC" or Station bells, as it is operated from the 110-volt, 60-cycle, power service; the other system, called the "DC" or shafts bells, takes its energy from closed-circuit primary batteries. As a supplement to the two main signals, a buzzer system is installed. The general arrangement is similar to "the main signal, except that there is a mine buzzer at each station. When a signal switch connected into the buzzer system is pulled down, all buzzers are operated, thus notifying the station tender that he is wanted at some particular level. Placed on the station posts, and within easy reach of the men on the cages, are the signal pull switches for the main signals. The station, or "AC," pull switches are furnished with a short rope as shown in Fig. 1, while the shaft, or "DC," pull switches are equipped with ropes that extend down the shaft past the next station. To avoid all confusion in the use of the three signal systems, a standard arrangement has been adopted in all mines for the location of the pull switches. Fig. 2 illustrates the position of the pull switch at the various mine stations for the main signal systems, but it does not show the buzzer pull switch; this is fixed to the roof timbers about 25 ft. back from the shaft. If the skip pockets are a considerable distance below the station, a pull switch for each main shaft compartment is connected to the "AC" system and placed at this point. However, if the distance is short, a light cord is attached to the station pull switches and dropped down to the skip pocket.

Accurate prediction of storm wave characteristics are needed for design of offshore structures. Statistical methods of random noise analysis provide techniques for predicting required wave properties. These techniques have been used to analyze and characterize storm wave profiles from Gulf of Mexico recording installations in 34, 65 and .98 ft of water. Correlations based on the results can be used to predict wave crest probabilities and wave shapes for a range of Gulf water depths and storm conditions. Example predictions of wave crest probability as a function of water depth for a particular set of storm conditions are given. INTRODUCTION Accurate predictions of wave crests and wave shapes are needed for design of offshore structures. With predictions of wave crests, platform deck elevations giving adequate protection from exposure to storm waves can be selected. Use of hydro-dynamic wave theories with the wave crest and wave shape predictions permits an estimate of the wave forces an offshore structure must withstand. Observation of ocean waves suggests use of statistical analysis for studying wave characteristics for water depths beyond the breaking wave zone; recent wave generation theories lend support to this approach. l-3 One of the most powerful methods of statistically analyzing wave profiles was introduced by Cartwright and Longuet-Higgins; most of the basic relations used were developed by Rice5.6 in studies of random noise theory. This method predicts wave crest elevation probabilities from two parameters characterizing a wave profile. The statistical approach also provides a means for predicting wave shapes. In the random noise model of a wave profile, surface elevation is represented as an infinite sum of sine waves with closely spaced frequencies and random phase angles. Power density is proportional to the sum of the squares of the amplitudes of sine waves having frequencies within a narrow band, and the distribution of power density as a function of frequency is called the power density spectrum, or power spectrum. The power spectrum characterizes an irregular sea, and hence finds use in motion studies of ships, barges and semisubmersible drilling platforms. From the power spectrum, a wave profile of any duration of time can, in principle, be calculated; this long wave profile depicts the many wave shapes to which a structure may be exposed. Thus, the statistical methods of wave analysis provide an approach to selecting wave shapes as well as wave crest elevations needed for design of offshore structures. For practical application of these techniques, power spectra and related quantities must be predicted from storm properties. Barber and Tucker 7 have reviewed correlations of wave properties and storm conditions. Their review summarizes work of Darbyshire,8 among others, in which a correlation of power spectra with wind intensity of the North Atlantic was developed. These results, plus more recent work by Pierson and Moskowitz and Kitaigorodskii,10 establish feasibility of correlation, but there is no theoretical basis for modifications extending the relations to other areas as remote as the Gulf of Mexico. Hence, to predict characteristics of Gulf of Mexico waves, a study of local observations is needed. This paper presents (1) a practical approach to computing wave profiles hat depict shapes of waves for use in force calculations, (2) a summary of relations for predicting probabilities of wave crest elevations, (3) correlations of parameters needed to apply these methods in the Gulf of Mexico and (4) examples of application of the techniques. THEORETICAL BACKGROUND The following sections summarize relations needed to calculate wave profiles and to estimate wave crest probabilities. FROM the time of its organization down to 1917, a period of more than eighty years, Phelps, Dodge & Co. was seldom involved in what could be called a major labor difficulty. Behind this remarkable record lay both a philosophy and its practical application. The philosophy was an attitude toward society called the Golden Rule. That philosophy had been a living principle in the lives of the founders of the company, Anson Phelps, Daniel James, and William E. Dodge. Their successors, William E. Dodge, Jr., and Daniel Willis James, accepted the same philosophy. Dr. James Douglas governed his life by it. All of these men and their families had given tangible expression to that conviction in benefactions of great magnitude and variety-churches, hospitals, educational institutions, libraries, missionary undertakings, and other organizations for human betterment, such as the Young Men's and Young Women's Christian Associations, and the development of model communities about their mills and factories. The existence of mineralized ground in the area near Lake Chelan has been known since 1887, when Major A. B. Rogers, a locating engineer for the Great Northern Railway, came up Lake Chelan to Railroad Creek in search of a pass over the Cascade Mountains. The steep mountainsides near the crest of the Cascades proved too difficult for railroad construction, and the project was abandoned. Upon his return to Seattle, Major Rogers apparently told his friends, the Denny family, about the large, red, oxidized patches he had seen on the valley walls along Railroad Creek. The Dennys, being true pioneers in spirit, grubstaked J. H. Holden to explore the area and to stake any promising mining ground, and thus began the chain of events that culminated in the construction of the plant that is now known as the Chelan Division of the Howe Sound Company. Holden staked the first group of claims in 1892. Soon afterward, A. H. Murdock, who was then a storekeeper in Chelan, and who is still living at Waterville, and his partner, W. P. Robinson, staked adjacent ground. These two groups of claims formed a substantial part of the mining property being worked today. During the period from the original staking in 1892 up to 1928, when the Britannia Mining and Smelting Co. optioned the property, many attempts were made to bring the property into production, through the formation of several stock companies and by examination and testing by engineers from several well-known mining companies. Although the Britannia organization optioned the property in 1928, not much was done until 1930, when a subsidiary was formed—the Chelan Copper Mining Co.—to explore further the possibilities of the ground. Some work was done during the next few years, but it was not until March 1937 that the Chelan Division of the Howe Sound Co. took over with a program of "full speed ahead," and active development of the mine and construction of the complete plant was begun, including docks, tug and barges, 54 miles of power line, 11 miles of road, mill, shop buildings and complete camp. Production began in April 1938, and has continued without interruption, except for regular change days and holidays and a six-weeks strike in 1939. This interval of time has seen the gradual evolution of a mine and mill originally planned for a rate of 1000 tons per day into a compact operation that last year averaged 2264 tons per operating day. This operation, although rather small when compared with the large copper producers of the Southwest, is important to the state of Washington for several reasons: It has provided employment for several hundred people continuously since construction days in 1937; it has helped materially in the war effort, through production of vital copper and zinc, without which no war can be won; and last, but not least, it has conclusively refuted the old pessimistic arguments that a successful mine would never be found in the Cascade Mountains of Washington. Knowledge of the theory underlying the behavior of mixtures of fluids in reservoir rocks is essential to the proper solution of certain types of problems in petroleum production, but is as yet incompletely developed. The object of this paper is to show the application of well established thermody-namic and physical principles to these problems, and thus to assist in the development of the basic theory. For convenience the problems to be considered here may be divided into two groups: 1. Static problems, involving only the static balance between capillary forces and those due to the difference in densities of the fluids; i.e., gravitational forces. 2. Dynamic problems, involving analysis of the motion oi mixtures of immiscible fluids in porous media under the influence of forces due to gravity, capillarity, and an impressed external pressure differential. Capillary Equilbrium in Sands Under this heading the static type of problem will be discussed and the results of experimental investigations on the capillary properties of unconsolidated sands will be presented. Although the discussion of this section is, in a sense, prefatory to the treatment of problems of mixture flow, the concepts developed here have considerable intrinsic importance apart from their ap-plication to flow problems. For, it is reason-able to postulate that the reservoir fluids are, owing to their long existence in undis- turbed mutual contact prior to exploitation, in substantial equilibrium. It follows that their distribution in the reservoir at the time of tapping should be entirely predictable from the theory of capillary equi librium, provided certain experimentally measurable properties of the reservoir rock are known. Knowledge of the distribution of the several fluids in the reservoir is, ol course, helpful in the estimation of reserves and in other problems. It is to be emphasized that throughout the discussion of capillary statics it is assumed that the fluids are in equilibrium from the capillary standpoint. Thus, water, where it is referred to as being in a reservoir, will be understood to be interstitial water, present at the time of drilling the reservoir, commonly termed "connate" water. The theory developed here is perfectly general for any porous solid, whether a carefully prepared unconsolidated sand or a natural sandstone from an oil reservoir. At present, however, only problems involving clean, unconsolidated sands can be made to yield numerical solutions, since only such sands have been adequately investigated experimentally. Experimental evaluation of the pertinent properties 01 natural reservoir rocks will permit the extension of the numerical treatment to problems involving these materials. We shall now consider in some detail the static equilibrium of fluid mixtures in porous solids: that is, the manner in which the reservoir fluids are distributed vertically whell the Forces due to capillarity are just balanccd by those due to gravitation.

The campaign now being waged to improve the quality of the rock-drill bit is the natural outcome of the scientific development of the drilling machine during the past twenty years. In this development there has been a great increase of power output per unit of weight of machine. But the development of the rock drilling engine has been seriously hampered by the need of a drill bit that would withstand, without undue wear or breakage, the heavy rapid blows of the improved pneumatic hammer. This problem was difficult to solve because an increase in the weight or section of the drill-steel bar resulted in decreased cutting speed and higher operating costs of both the bit and its actuating engine. The solution, therefore, is to make the bit of steel that, for a given weight or section, will be more shock and wear resisting. In the attempt to meet these requirements, many of the drill-steel manufacturers alloyed the steel with vanadium, chromium, nickel, etc. on the assumption that such elements would improve the rock-drill bit but due to the sensitiveness of such steel to forging and heat treatment, higher cost, and lack of continuity of effort on the part of the steel manufacturer to perfect this product, but little progress has been made in the adoption of these steels and the so-called straight carbon steel is today recognized as the standard material for all rock-drill bits. The first step in improving drill-bit efficiency is the determination of the cause of breakage and wear. For this reason, in 1917, certain rock-drill manufacturers, in conjunction with some of the larger mining interests, conducted exhaustive tests in both the field and the laboratory. It was then found that, in the main, the cause of drill-steel troubles is not attributable to the duty imposed upon it by the normal operation of the drilling engine, but to improper forging and heat treating of the bit and to the subjecting of the bit to improper use. The fact that it is possible to minimize the troubles attributable to improper heat treatment of the drill steel has been demonstrated and it is recommended that such knowledge be made available by teaching those interested in the production, use, and up-keep of drill bits the principles on which success in this direction may be achieved.
