4.3-1. Introduction. DEFINITION OF PRODUCTION SYSTEMS ENGINEERING. Surface mines, like most other mining and manufacturing operations, are usually organized along functional departmental lines. Frequently a mine manager will have his responsibilities divided among production, maintenance, administrative, and engineering functions. Often these are separate departments, but various combinations and variations of these functions can be found in mining companies throughout the world. The production function is responsible for physically removing the ore from the ground, processing it, and shipping the product to its market. The production manager supervises and is responsible for all man-machine systems necessary to extract and process the ore. The maintenance function, which is sometimes included within the framework of production, has the task of insuring the maximum availability and longevity of equipment needed to produce the ore. The administrative function is responsible for accounting, personnel, industrial relations, purchasing, public relations, property, and other related staff functions. For purposes of this chapter, engineering can be described as the function which plans, designs, and supervises construction of physical plant and equipment. In this context engineering includes mechanical, civil, chemical, electrical, and mining engineering. However, another phase of engineering is to prepare plans to insure that the various man-machine components function in an optimum way towards the single most important goal of any enterprise-the maximization of return on the investors' money. Along with the planning, another duty of engineering is to audit all phases of the operation for the purpose of recommending improvements toward this same general goal. These latter two ideas form the basis for a discussion of production engineering and systems engineering. Production engineering is a catchall, problem-oriented function whose duties can include: 1) solution of day-to-day production problems, 2) short-

In the spring of 1930, the question was raised as to the possibility of estimating the depth to which the pyrrhotite-nickel deposit at the Falconbridge mine extended in the earth. This body is 7500 ft. long, it dips at 80° to the north, and it is fairly straight with slight sinuosities. Dr. F. W. Lee suggested that it might be possible to solve the problem by measuring the vertical magnetic intensity, with a good magnetometer, both near the surface of the earth and also at a level a few feet higher in the air. The writer regarded this suggestion with some scepticism, but it was decided to put the scheme to a practical test. In July, 1930, Dr. Lee, Dr. Keys and the writer, with Mr. Joyce and Mr. Belloc as assistants, made a firm, light wooden platform (Fig. 1) measuring 4 by 4 ft. on the top, which was 10 ft. above ground. This platform could be moved easily a few yards by four men, and carried across country in a wagon or by motor truck. Some iron nails were used in its construction, but we were not able to detect their influence on the Askania magnetometer. Nevertheless, in future work, the use of iron should be completely avoided. Readings were taken along a traverse at right angles to the orebody, at several stations, both on the ground and on the platform. The excess readings, over the dike, as compared with those about 800 ft. away, are shown in Table 1. The largest reading, 6.8, is open to suspicion and should be rejected. The depth of the top of the orebody is known by electrical survey, and by actual drilling, to be about 112 to 123 ft., and the covering is sandy glacial drift. Similar readings were taken over a long straight magnetic diabase dike. These also are shown in Table 1. The magnetic vertical intensity is consistently less at the higher level, which is 10 ft. above the lower level.

Compressed air has been and is still very extensively used in connection with mining-operations, but its application in the past has been almost entirely confined to supplying power to underground machinery. Its introduction was due to the difficulty of taking care of the steam which is exhausted underground, rather than to any advantage in efficiency to be gained by its use. The ease with which electric power may be carried to the remotest parts of the mine and the high efficiency of the electric motor have long been appreciated by mine-operators, and electric power is now extensively used underground in the more recent developments, while many of the compressed-air engines in the older workings are being rapidly replaced by electric motors. Recently, however, it has been suggested to use compressed air for driving the large shaft-hoists, the air for the engines being supplied by electrically-driven compressors, and an installation of this character is being erected at Butte, Mont. It is the object of this paper to compare the compressed-air system of hoisting with the various electrical systems, from the stand-points of first-cost and cost of operation. However, before entering into a discussion of the various systems, it will be well to consider briefly the conditions affecting the choice of a system of hoisting in which electricity is the ultimate source of power. The power required by a mine-hoist is extremely intermittent and fluctuates between very wide limits, the all-day average consumption of power not exceeding from 5 to 15 per cent. of the maximum demand during hoisting. INTRODUCTION WHILE working with a number of very sticky cracking clays from western Canada the writer became interested in a study of the cause of the excessive plasticity, This led to a review of the rather bulky literature on the subject and the finding that plasticity still remains to be satisfactorily explained. Most of these investigations seem to have been carried on solely from the chemical viewpoint, the geologic aspects having been ignored. In 1882, The Arizona Copper Co., Ltd., acquired producing copper mines at Metcalf and Morenci (locally called Longfellow). Metcalf is situated a distance of 7 miles, and Morenci a distance of 6 miles from the general office of the company at Clifton, Ariz. A reduction works with five blast furnaces was built in the center of the town of Clifton in 1884 and operated until January, 1914. Concentration of oxidized ores was begun in 1890-1891, in a mill built adjoining the smelter, and id October, 1893, a leaching process was started for treating tailings from the oxide mill. A sulphide concentrator with 300 tons capacity was built at Clifton and started treating chalcocite ores in July, 1896. This was the first mill to treat low-grade copper-siilphide ores successfully. Another concentration mill for sulphide ores was erected at Morenci in 1900. The sulphide mills are now being remodeled to treat ores by concentration and flotation, with a capacity of 4,000 tons at Morenci and 500 tons at Clifton. The leaching plant has not been running since September, 1914. Population growth in industrialized economies constitutes an automatic stimulus for expansion of the construction and chemical processing industries, which are a big market for industrial minerals. Of the total value of mineral production in the United States, excluding fuels, about 70 % results from the production of industrial minerals. The value of industrial mineral production rose more than 10 % between 1961 and 1962. A similar growth has occurred during 1963. During the decade 1952-1962, the production of industrial minerals increased in value by 98%, in contrast to an increase of 60% in the value of the gross national product. The accompanying table shows the percentage change in the production of various industrial minerals from 1952-1962, as well as from 1961-1962.

It is well known that different forms of carbon show differences in chemical behavior under apparently identical conditions. It is fairly well known that these differences persist, although to a lesser degree, in a single group of carbons, such as the anthracites of Pennsylvania. It is the purpose of this paper to show the extent of these variations for Pennsylvania anthracites from actual quantitative measurements of the amount of carbon dioxide reduced under the standardized test conditions employed. As the amount of carbon dioxide reduced to the monoxide (under comparative conditions termed, for convenience, the "reactivity") is important in combustion, gas production and metallurgy, it is hoped that this paper will be a useful contribution to the store of knowledge on these subjects. In carrying out the investigation, considerable time and thought were spent in obtaining what seemed to be the best possible design of apparatus. The next step consisted in making a number of trial runs on the same sample, varying temperature, particle diameter, etc. and then outlining a standardized procedure to be followed in testing all samples. Fifty anthracites were tested. As a matter of interest, some 10 miscellaneous samples were also tested. The data show initial reaction temperatures (abbreviated I.R.T.), reaction velocity constants at 900" and 950" C., some effects of added substances, and a few additional tests designed to throw some light on the causes of differences in reactivity. The sample of charcoal, as was anticipated, proved to be easily the most reactive of any sample tested. The anthracites as a group came second. The five samples of gas and by-product cokes, obtained from five different coke manufacturers, came third, and a single sample of Rhode Island anthracite ranked fourth, with respect to reactivity as above defined. Although the five coke samples do not necessarily represent the average market coke, and five samples constitute a rather small number of samples to serve as a basis for comparisons, the fact that none

Twinned metal crystals are usually designated as either deformation twins or annealing twins. If twins are to be classified according to the treatment the metal has undergone just prior to the observation of the twins, there are two other possible groups: (1) solidification twins,† when observed in the as-solidified or as-cast condition, and (2) transformation twins,† when observed in a metal which has been cooled from above an allotropic transformation temperature. McKeehan has demonstrated that ferrite does, occasionally at least, contain twinned structures2. The twins, which he studied by optical methods, were obtained during the preparation of iron single crystals by very slow cooling through A3. He proved that the twin relation was actually that which previous investigators had predicted; namely, twinning along three planes of the form (112). Since McKeehan's discovery, little or no attention has been given to this transformation twinning of alpha iron, or to the possibility that it might occur at all speeds of cooling from above A3 instead of merely during the preparation of single crystals. McKeehan's twins were evidently regarded as interesting only in proving that a body-centered cubic metal could form twinned structures—at least under certain conditions. It is generally believed that iron seldom if ever forms annealing twins. Certainly the straight-line banding which is so abundant in annealed face-centered cubic metals is characteristically absent in iron annealed below A3. However, O'Neil13 has studied "twin-like" crystals in annealed alpha iron and concludes that the specimen he studied actually contailled a few annealing twins. Tamura4 as reported "twin-like" crystals both in wrought iron and mild steel; specimens of the latter were annealed above and below A3 and showed "twin-like" crystals after both kinds of treatments.

INTRODUCTION Screening is a mechanical process that separates particles by size. Modern coal preparation is made possible by efficient sizing. Sizing of coal is defined in terms of the opening through which an individual particle will or will not pass, or as two openings, the larger of which passes the particle and the smaller of which retains the particle. Screening accomplishes sizing by passing coal of a wide range of sizes through a series of screens, each of a decreasing size. The individual screen discharges are then directed into different screen products for subsequent sale or processing. Screening in modern preparation plants is done for the following reasons: 1 ) Removal of fine coal before a size reduction step. 2) Size separation of the coal into a coarse and fine fraction for sized products or processing in coarse and fine coal circuits. 3) Recovery of heavy media from heavy media coal cleaning circuits. 4) Dewatering. 5) Rock and trash removal by handpicking on a screen. Fig. 8-1 is a generalized flowsheet of a plant showing the use of screens in the coal preparation process. Table 8-1 shows the vibrating screen equipment utilized in Fig. 8-1

The purpose of this investigation was to determine the equilibrium diagram of the lithium-magnesium pair as a first step in studying the possible usefulness of these alloys as ultra-light structural materials. Review of the Literature The behavior of lithium towards magnesium was first investigated by Masing and Tammann.(1)† In order to prevent oxidation the alloys were made in iron tubes under an atmosphere of hydrogen; temperatures were measured with a glass-protected thermocouple. These investigators found that lithium and magnesium form two series of solid solutions separated by a miscibility gap between 85 and 95 per cent magnesium; that the alloys with 81 and 95 per cent magnesium showed a homogeneous structure under microscopic examination, while the alloy with 89 per cent magnesium contained two distinguishable crystallites; that the curve indicating the beginning of crystallization rises from the melting point of lithium to that of magnesium; and that no compounds of lithium and magnesium are formed. The equilibrium diagram was not plotted because no definite data were obtained for determining the solidus and the position of the miscibility gap in the solid state. The difficulties encountered in this investigation were: (1) that it was necessary to heat them as high as the melting point of magnesium in order to obtain homogeneous melts; at such temperatures the alloys attacked the glass protecting the thermocouple; and (2) that at temperatures above 400" C. the lithium united with the hydrogen to form lithium hydride, thus contaminating the alloys. THE following report covers the history of the development of the mine, present equipment, methods and costs of mining and milling. In addition, a description of the ore deposit is given with emphasis on the origin of the fractures, mode and types of ore occurrence, and mechanics of granite emplacement. An endeavor has been made to present a complete and accurate statement of the San Mauricio mine, the highest grade gold mine in the Philippine Islands. Credit is gratefully acknowledged to the mine staff for descriptions and details regarding their particular field of work. All analyses were made by Mr. T. A. DeVore, head chemist, San Mauricio Mining Co. Messrs. Edward Wisser, J. E. Fyfe, A. F. Skerl and W. B. Meek, geol-ogists, have contributed geologic information and ideas, for which thanks are extended. The following paper has been prepared with the object of placing on record in the Transactions some facts concerning the present condition and future prospects of the coal industry of Illinois. In presenting it, the writer wishes to say that a considerable amount of the material contained is taken from the publications and records of the Illinois Coal Mining Investigations, the annual Coal Report of the State Mining Board, and the work of the State Geological Survey. Coal Beds and Mining Methods According to the latest maps of the State Geological Survey, there are only 19 of the 102 counties of the State some portion of whose territory is not within the borders of the coal measures. If outlying areas in Calhoun and Whiteside Counties are considered, the number is reduced to 17. This does not mean that all of the 85 counties that are partly or wholly underlain by coal measures will become producers, as there are some portions of the State in which the coal does not occur in beds of such thickness as to warrant the hope that it can be mined. The mining of coal is widespread, however, for in 1916 there was production from 61 of the 102 counties of the State, There seem to be no cases in which operations will be limited by depth, as none of the coal measures lie at depths much greater than those at which it has been proved that coal may be profitably mined in this field. In fact, the deepest shaft reaching a bed of bituminous coal in the United States is located in this State at Assumption, where coal only 3 ½ ft. (1.07 m.) thick is worked at a depth of 1004 ft. (306 m.). The coal beds occur in the form of a basin which is deepest along a line extending through the central part of the State and bearing a little west of north. The northern, western and southern borders of this basin lie within the boundaries of the State, but on the eastern side the Illinois field is continuous with the Indiana field. The regions of New Mexico referred to are in Socorro, Grant, and Dona Ana counties, and a portion of Lincoln County, embracing in the aggregate a very large area, of most of which our knowledge is as yet very fragmentary and superficial. It is only very recently that large portions of this region have been accessible. It has been full of danger from hostile bands of wandering Apaches, whose murderous raids have slain many adventurous miners and seriously prevented developments. But this evil has now been largely abated, and in many of the mining camp of this region there is no longer any danger from this cause. SOCORRO MINES. About three and a half miles back of the old Mexican town of Socorro, on the Rio Grande, chief town of the County of Socorro, are two or more large veins of heavy spar, cutting across the fat* of Socorro Mountain in a northeast and southwest direction, and dip ping at an angle of about forty degrees into the body of the mountain. These veins are in rhyolite, and, so far as could be seen in openings on the Torrence Mine, which I examined, are without any clay parting or selvage. The average thickness of the Torrence rein may be about five feet, the thickness varying from pne or two feet to thirteen feet. Magnesium has long been known as the lightest of our engineering metals. This metal, silvery white in color, has a specific gravity of only 1.74. Aluminum, the next lightest structural metal, is 1 ½ times heavier; zinc is 4 times heavier; iron and steel are 4 ½ times heavier; and copper and nickel are 5 times heavier. Magnesium does not occur in the free state but is very abundant in nature, constituting 2.5 pct of the earth's crust in the form of various ores. It is the third most abundant structural metal, being exceeded only by iron and aluminum. Magnesium is unique, however, in that in the form of magnesium chloride it also exists in the oceans. Sea water is the source most widely used for production in the United States but magnesium is also commercially produced from magnesite, dolomite, and other ores as well as from certain inland brines. The vast quantity of magnesium existing in the waters of the oceans can be visualized when it is realized that the removal of one hundred million tons per year (the approximate annual steel production in the United States) for a million years would reduce the magnesium content of sea water only from 0.13 to 0.12 pct, providing no more magnesium had washed into the sea in the meantime. Not only is magnesium potentially very abundant but it is in addition a very versatile metal and can be shaped and worked by practically all methods known to the art of metal working. THE constitution of the indium-zinc alloy series has been investigated by Wilson and Peretti,1 who determined the liquidus and eutectic temperatures by the conventional method of cooling curves and the eutectic composition by analyzing eutectic exudations. Recent developments affecting the availability of indium and consequent increased interest in its applications make a more complete knowledge of the constitution of its alloys desirable. As a part of a program for the reexamination of the constitution of indium alloys by precision methods, the indium-zinc phase diagram [ ] (Figs. I and 2) has been redetermined in its entirety. The eutectic temperature (143.5°C.) reported by Wilson and Peretti has been confirmed exactly, but their value of the zinc concentration at the eutectic, 4 per cent, was found to be high; the new value is 2.8 per cent of zinc. There is also a rather large difference between the forms of the liquidus curves of Wilson and Peretti and those found in the present studies.
