This test was described in a privately circulated First Progress Report on Slacking Characteristics of Coal, by A. C. Fieldner and W. A. Selvig, May 1, 1928. The test was described in detail in U. S. Bureau of Mines Report of Investigation 3055, in November, 1930,1 The test, in brief, is conducted as follows: A sample of freshly mined coal consisting of 18 to 25 pieces approximating 1 1/4 cubes, and weighing 500 to 600 grams, is taken for the test. The sample is subjected to a "blank sieving" of carefully regulated degree, on an 8-in. circular sieve with 0.263-in. square openings, and the undersize and oversize weighed. The oversize is placed on a sheet-iron pan and dried for about 24 hr. in an A.S.T.M. air-drying oven maintained at 30" to 35" C. through which a current of warm air is drawn. The sample is then cooled to room temperature and immersed for one hour in water at the same temperature. The water is then drained off, the sample dried for 24 hr. as before, cooled, sieved as before, and the oversize and undersize weighed. The percentage weight of the undersize is calculated and reported as the first cycle loss. This loss, corrected by subtracting the percentage loss in the blank sieving, is termed the slacking index. The sample may be subjected to further cycles of wetting, draining, air-drying, sieving and weighing. In a letter (August, 1932) W. A. Selvig approved making the blank sieving on a duplicate sample, rather than on the sample used for the test, where sufficient coal was available. This method is now employed in these laboratories. The accelerated weathering test has been employed in the laboratories of the Research Council of Alberta, at Edmonton, since 1928, but not found entirely satisfactory as repeat determinations with samples taken from the same or adjacent mines frequently showed serious differences. Differences must be expected as the coal may vary in the seam, and the selection of a typical set of lumps approximating 1 1/4-in. cubes

Barite deposits are of widespread occurrence in Nevada but there are few producing properties; most of the latter are in northern Nevada. The production of the state is small at present—in the neighborhood of 15,000 tons annually—but is steadily increasing. The barite occurs in veins and also as replacement deposits in limestone. The bulk of the production has come from the replacement deposits. It is thought that the barite was deposited from rising hot waters similar to—and probably contemporaneous with—those responsible for some of the metallic ores of the state. This paper discusses only the deposits in northern Nevada. The commercial mining of barite did not begin in Nevada until 1916 but although the production has been small there has been a rapid increase in tonnage during the past several years. Barite is widely distributed in the state and production comes from at least nine of the seventeen counties. Apparently this is not generally known, as only two counties arc mentioned in a recent publication6 dealing with barite. The increase in output is due largely to recently discovered barite deposits in northern Nevada. The principal production has come from the northern portions of Lander and Eureka counties; smaller amounts from Elko County. The discussion in this paper is confined largely to the deposits in these counties. Most of the producing area is tributary to the Western Pacific and Southern Pacific Railroads, whose tracks lie along the Humboldt River. Barite is known from other northern counties but so far the production has been small. The output has come entirely from veins and replacement deposits, the latter largely in sedimentary rocks. In general, the barite from veins is white; that from the replacement deposits usually is dark gray to black, although some is light gray or white. Undoubtedly other members have given their lives in the Service of the United States and the Allies during the past four years, but the following biographical notices are all that have reached us as yet. Lewis Newton Bailey Lewis Newton Bailey died of pneumonia at Camp Merritt, N. J., Apr. 30, 1918, at the age of 34 years. He was Master Engineer, Senior Grade, in the Fourth Regiment, U. S. Engineers, and although he was offered a commission as First Lieutenant shortly after enlisting, he preferred not to accept it until he had reached France. By those who knew him well, this lack of eagerness for promotion will be recognized as consistent with his whole character. Mr. Bailey was born at San Diego, Cal., May 28,1884, and graduated from the University of California, College of Mines, in 1906. He joined the American Institute of Mining Engineers in 1916. During 1904 he was employed at the cyanide plant of the Buckeye mines, Forest Hills, Cal. In the autumn of 1909 he went to the Coeur d'Alene District, Idaho, and was first employed on construction work of the Bunker Hill & Sullivan Mining & Concentrating Co'., with a short intermission at the Hercules mill, after which. he was sampler and assayer for the Bunker Hill & Sullivan Co. until May, 1910, when he was obliged to return to California to attend to family interests. Returning to the Coeur d'Alene district in November, 1911, he was given charge of remodelling and operating the mill of the Coeur d'Alene Development Co., treating the output of the Ontario mine; this work he performed with credit and complete success. In December, 1914, he returned to the Bunker Hill & Sullivan Co., as assistant metallurgist and mill superintendent, his work consisting mainly in the testing and improvement of concentrator practice, which he continued with great credit until August, 1915, when family considerations required that he again return to the home of his parents at San Diego. Mr. Bailey was characterized by energy, both physical and mental, by devotion to his friends, associates and employer. He was particularly successful in his relations with the men under him and, in fact, was thoroughly well likcd by everybody with whom he came in contact.

It is shown that the apparent activation energy for creep of pure poly crystalline metals increases with increasing temperature in the temperature range 0.5 to 1.0 of the absolute melting temperature. This increase is probably associated with the influence 0-f the elastic modulus on the creep rate. By accounting for the variation of Young&apos;s nodulus with temperature, the true activation energies for creep of pure cadmium and aluminuvl are shown to be equal to the activation energies for self-diffusion in these metals, within experimental error, at all temperatures above 0.5T,. New creep parameters are proposed for cmrelation of steady-state creep rate and time-to-rupture data. These are respectively, where u is the creep stress, E is Young&apos;s rrodulus, i,is the steady-state creep mte, t, is the time -to-rupture, and D is the self-diffusion coefficient [equal to Do exp (-QSd/RT)] . It has been established experimentally1 and theoreticallyZm4 that high-temperature creep of poly-crystalline pure metals is a thermally activated process and may be represented by the general expression where <, is the steady-state creep rate, A is a constant dependent on the internal structure of the material, f is some function of the applied stress (0) and test temperature (T), and D is the self-diffusion coefficient. If D is separated into its temperature-dependent and independent portions, then it is possible to rewrite Eq. [I] as where Qsd is the activation energy for self-diffusion. Assuming a simple Arrhenius-type relationship between creep rate and temperature at a given constant stress, the apparent activation energy for creep, Q,, is given by the expression It is obvious that if is not a function of temperature It has been shown that the steady-state creep rate for pure polycrystalline metals1 can be represented by where S is a constant, L is the grain diameter, E is the isotropic polycrystalline (unrelaxed) elastic modulus, and n is a constant equal to approximately 5 over a wide range of stress. The main problem in tunneling without the use of explosives lies in the development of tools capable of continuous mechanical destruction of rock, resulting in a fragmentation which lends itself to a smooth, uninterrupted transportation of the broken rock away from the tunnel face. While all moles of U.S. design mainly achieve this by crushing the rock by means of "disk cutters" or "roller bits," a boring system based on the principle of cutting the rock came into being in Europe, whereby the rock is worked in a manner very similar to the milling of metals. For tunneling purposes, this principle was first developed by the late Austrian engineer Wohlmeyer. Between late 1962 and the spring of 1965, the first experimental machine was tested in a German coal mine, working in coal and shale over a distance of some 3000 ft, divided over two runs separated by a period of time to allow for equipment modifications. In 1964, a collaboration was started between Wohlmeyer and the Habegger engineering firm of Thun in Switzerland. The normal Habegger range of equipment consists of aerial ropeways, ski lifts, and certain tool machines, to which in later years have been added monorail passenger-transport systems. One of these was installed as the main mode of transport at the 1967 World Fair in Montreal. After taking over the Wohlmeyer patents, Habegger further developed the original cutting principle, aiming at more robust machines in order to be able to tackle harder rock. A first machine was built and tested at a site near Thun in sandstone averaging 17,000 psi compressive strength and limestone of 25,000 psi. In May 1966 this machine was delivered to Japan for the boring of a pilot tunnel for the Honshu-Hokkaido railway connection under the sea. A second machine, incorporating many improvements based on experience gained with this first mole, was built during 1966 and tested in the same limestone as mentioned previously (25,000 psi), before being installed to bore the head race tunnel of the Julia hydroelectric power scheme near St. Moritz, Switzerland, in the early summer of 1967 (Fig. 1 ) .

HOW often has the thoughtful observer pondered the apparent contradictions experienced in the weather? One can take records of two days, one in the winter and one in the summer. The "degree days1&apos; indicate that space heating and domestic load were present in one case and not in the other. The Business Index may be about the same, indicating that the industrial activity of the area and its concomitant use of fuel were about the same. Thus the volume of the products of combustion released to the atmosphere varied only as related to the space heating demand. Yet on one day in winter the atmosphere may be clear and bracing, while on a summer&apos;s day the air is thick and murky and the visibility sharply reduced. The situation may be reversed. What are some of the factors that contribute to the creation of these conditions? These few notes have been prepared to indicate some of the influences that are exerted on the problem. The Sources of Atmospheric PolLution The industrial area of Pittsburgh, Pa., has been a dominant center for the production of iron and steel for over one hundred years. In fact, with the growth of the numerous auxiliary processes Allegheny County which contains Pittsburgh is prob- ably the most industrialized county in the world. In addition, the type of manufacture carried out in this area is predominantly dependent on thermal energy (heat). That energy is supplied from coke and coal produced in the vicinity of Pittsburgh Indicative of the stupendous quantities of fuel that are employed in this industrial area&apos;s economy, the following (Table I) taken from the U. S. Census (1940) may be of interest. The uranium industry is booming. In Texas alone, there are about 22 different companies with active exploration programs. Twelve solution mines have been permitted; three surface mines have been authorized; and two mills are currently in operation. However, the industry also has a problem, and that is the disposal of radioactive wastes. Over the past several years, stories concerning nuclear wastes have appeared frequently in the news. One of the most frequently cited cases occurred in Grand Junction, Colorado. In 1966, after ten years of investigations, the U. S. Public Health Service (PHS) discovered that tailings from a uranium mill were being used as fill material and aggregate for local construction purposes. It was estimated that between 150,000 and 200,000 tons of material had been removed and used under streets, driveways, swimming pools, and sewer lines. In addition, tailings had been used under concrete slabs and around foundations of occupiable structures. Further studies prompted the Surgeon General to warn that the risk of leukemia and lung cancer could be doubled at the measured radiation levels. More recently, the L. B. Foster Company discovered that its building site in Washington, West Virginia, was radioactive. While digging a foundation, the ground erupted and a ball of fire 30 feet high shot out. Evidently, the dirt was laced with radioactive thorium and zirconium, a potentially explosive mixture contained in a Nigerian sand which had been used by the previous site owners in the manufacture of nuclear fuel rods. Just this month we have read about legal suits to stop exploration for a nuclear waste disposal site in Randall County, Texas. The U. S. Department of Energy is trying to locate a deep underground nuclear waste depository for final burial of over 76 million gallons of high-level wastes. The problem is acute, the wastes are accumulating at a rate of about 300,000 gallons per year. Nor do these numbers include the spent fuel elements from nuclear power plants that are in temporary storage facilities. Fortunately, public awareness of these and other related issues is high. Unfortunately, the differences in the waste products from the nuclear fuel cycle are not always apparent to the general public. There are two distinct types of radioactive wastes: "high-level", which consist of spent fuel or wastes from the reprocessing of spent fuel; and "low-level", which, in general, are by-product wastes. There are numerous non-technical definitions that can be applied to help the layman differentiate between high-level and low-level wastes. For this latter purpose, it is best to think of them in terms of what we can see and feel. In general, high-level wastes are physically hot and can cause acute radiation sickness in a short period of time. Low-level wastes are not hot, but may cause chronic health effects after long exposure. The wastes which we are concerned with in the uranium mining and milling industry are low-level wastes. As recently as ten years ago, there were very few controls or regulations governing tailings disposal methods. At the same time, mine reclamation was not enforced through either state or Federal laws and the long-term viability of abandoned tailings ponds was not assured. The regulatory climate has changed significantly in the last decade, however. The low-level radioactive wastes generated by uranium mining and milling are generally contained in a tailings pond. Approximately 85-97% of the total radioactivity contained in uranium ore is present in the mill waste that goes to such tailings ponds. The isotope Radium-226 is probably the most potentially harmful radioactive parameter in the ponds. Radium emits gamma radiation and is also an alpha particle emitter. Because gamma radiation is very penetrating, it presents a potential health problem when a source is located external to the body. Gamma radiation will go through the body, causing damage to each cell encountered on the way. Although alpha particles have very little penetration capability, they can cause extensive cell damage. For this reason, alpha particles are a problem after inhalation or ingestion. Radium creates a health hazard by both of these mechanisms. Radium decays to radon gas which can be inhaled and serve as an alpha particle emitter. Additionally, radium is very soluble and readily enters the natural hydrologic cycle if allowed to leach from a tailings pond. With a half-life of 1620 years, radium has plenty of time to be taken into the food chain and end up in our bodies, emitting alpha particles. Because the potential health problems are better understood today than ten years ago, and because the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) has developed increasingly stringent government regulations, the uranium mining industry applies a high level of technology to the disposal of nuclear wastes. In most cases, low-level radioactive wastes are disposed of at or near the site where they are produced. There are six commercial burial grounds for low-level wastes, but it would not be economical to ship all mine or milling wastes to these sites. RESIDENTS of many urban centers are becoming increasingly aware of the obscuring effect of fume and smoke discharge from power, metallurgical, chemical, and other industries; and they, as well as the legislatures of these affected cities, are agitating for cleaner air. Management&apos;s most pressing problem is to find an economical way to reduce process effluents in response to the growing pressure from population and legislative demands. The removal must be done, if possible, without handicap to the current operation, since the costs of relocating are often excessive or prohibitive. In fume recovery or disposal, an important item to consider is whether or not the material being discharged has any value. If it has commercial value, the cost of its recovery may offset or aid amortization. For this reason, in making a study of the specific problem in hand, a major factor was the nature of the material emanating from the stack: in particular, its particle size, size range, and its chemical and physical composition, as well as its potential value and utility when recovered (in either a wet or dry state). Should the product have no commercial value, it must be disposed of at minimum cost in a way to prevent recontamination. Initial studies were therefore made to determine stack concentrations and volumes of material evolved from the operations. The next phase of the study concerned the physical and chemical nature of the collected fume. The third portion of this paper describes the wet and dry collector studies undertaken to recover the fume. Cleaning Requirements for Ferroalloy Furnace Operation The basic need for any effluent collection equipment is the highest possible efficiency and the lowest tolerable resistance when the power consumption involved is considered. Since the electric furnace effluent is largely composed of fume of small size (less than 0.5u), it has high light obscuring properties, and even low concentrations will cause some loss of visibility and be evident to nearby residents. The permissible limit for fly ash emission in many cities is based on a weight value (viz, approximately 0.4 grains per cu ft), but the smoke density values are dependent upon a shade of color. In the case of the Los Angeles County code, emission is restricted to pounds per pound of material processed per hour basis (but not exceeding 40 lb per hr for any one given plant operation). If an average particle size of the fume from ferro-silicon alloy electric furnaces is assumed to be 0.4u (as shown later, this is the approximate mean size) and an average loading of 1 grain per cu ft (stp), each cubic foot of stack gas will contain approximately 75x10 10 particles (based on assumed, and confirmed, spherical shape and a standard deviation of unity). When it is realized that the air in metropolitan areas, which are also general industrial areas, contains approximately 5x108 particles, the tremendous light scattering effect of this concentration becomes apparent. Consequently, nearly 100 pct collection would be necessary to equal the average concentration. Fortunately, however, discharge from a high point above ground (50 to 100 ft) will result in at least a thousandfold dilution, or the stack concentration reaching the ground in the foregoing case might result in a ground concentration of &apos; particles. If the concentration at the source could be reduced by a factor of 100 (99 pct efficiency of collection), then a concentration of 75x10" particles would be diluted to 7.5x10&apos; which would be very satisfactory. An efficiency of 90 pct (factor of 10 decontamination) at the source would result in a discharge of 75x109 articles which upon dilution yields 75x10 which is still 15 times the general air value. Another approach to this consideration is to use the value of concentration of 0.005 grains per cu ft for the value of a visible effluent as cited by Kayse.1 To attain this value with an average loading of 1 grain per cu ft would require an efficiency of 99.5 pct. Since the foregoing value is not based on any reported size of fume particles, it is felt that the numbers&apos; approach given previously is more reliable. These calculations serve to indicate the desirability of thorough cleaning, preferably at the source, and with efficiencies well above 90 pct, preferably above 95 pct (dilution 1:20). One of the most important items in any control program is to reduce the concentrations as close to their sources as possible. The use of better furnace design, deeper coverage over the electrodes, and the prevention of blows or breaks in the surface all help to reduce dissemination; consequently, all of these improvements should be made, if possible, to cut down the effluent load. In addition, in order to minimize the volume of contaminated air that has to be cleaned, the furnace should be enclosed as much as possible. THE manufacture of anhydrous sodium sulphate or salt cake from natural deposits in the United States has been in general somewhat of a marginal undertaking. Competition from foreign sources and from large quantities of byproduct sodium sulphate produced domestically in the manufacture of hydrochloric acid and other chemicals has existed and continues. For example, most of the sodium sulphate produced is a byproduct or co-product in the manufacture of hydrochloric acid through the reaction of sodium chloride with sulphuric acid. In recent years, many manufacturers of rayon have installed equipment to recover sodium sulphate from waste spin bath liquors; today this is an important source. Before World War II large quantities of sodium sulphate were imported from Germany. In 1949 imported material from Europe again appeared on the domestic market. Natural sodium sulphate from Canada in substantial quantities also enters the United States markets. Despite this kind of competition, numerous attempts have been made to exploit various natural deposits of sodium sulphate in this country, but only a very few of these have survived economically over a period of years. One of these few operations is the plant of the Ozark-Mahoning Co. located 13 miles south of Monahans in West Texas. Several factors contributing to the successful life of this plant may be summarized as follows: 1—Geographical location. Monahans is reasonably close, freightwise, to the Kraft paper mills in Texas, Arkansas, and Louisiana; the Kraft paper industry is the greatest consumer of sodium sulphate in the United States. 2—Availability of natural gas as low cost fuel. Proximity of the natural gas fields of West Texas has been a tremendous asset, as the availability of low-cost natural gas is to all industry throughout the Southwest. 3—The nature of the deposit. The occurrence of sodium sulphate brines in southeastern New Mexico and West Texas has been very well described by Lang,&apos; who writes that the brines are found in the Castile formation of the Delaware basin. Here weathering has altered the anhydrite so that a relatively porous gypsiferous zone overlies a dense impervious mass of anhydrite. This porous zone provides traps where percolating ground waters that have picked up soluble salts may lodge. These traps or pockets are the natural brine reservoirs exploited at Monahans. Although several hundred wells have been drilled, currently some 25 wells serve to supply brine to the plant. All are within 1 1/2 miles of the plant and are conveniently tied together by an electric power system serving electric motors driving the pumps. Having the raw material in the form of a brine which can be pumped from shallow wells makes possible much simpler and more efficient handling than if it were in form of solids. By contrast, other deposits of sodium sulphate, such as those in Arizona, Nevada, and North Dakota, are in the form of the solid minerals, thenardite and mirabilite, which present somewhat more of a mining and mineral dressing problem.&apos; The largest producer of sodium sulphate from natural sources in the United States is at Searles Lake, Cal., and there a brine also is utilized. 4—Water. Substantial quantities are needed for cooling towers and for operation of gas engines. An area underlain with brine is not a promising source of fresh water, but fortunately, after a long search, an adequate supply was found nearly two miles from the plant. It may be appropriate to discuss briefly the grades of sodium sulphate offered on the market. Salt cake is the name usually applied to the grade of sodium sulphate used by the Kraft paper industry. It may be a low analysis byproduct, 95 to 97 pct sodium sulphate, with as much as l 1/2 to 2 pct residual acid, or it may be a natural product. Usually salt cake is considered a low grade product, but a great deal of a higher grade of material is marketed under this name. The specifications for glassmakers&apos; salt cake are somewhat higher than those of the paper industry, usually requiring 98 pct sodium sulphate. Technical anhydrous sodium sulphate is a high grade material and usually exceeds 99 pct sodium sulphate. It finds the biggest market in the textile industry and is used as a builder in some synthetic detergents. Glauber&apos;s salt, Na2SO4. 10H20, is usually of high purity. Preferred for some uses, it normally has been recrystallized from an anhydrous salt. A unique manufacturing process has been developed at Monahans. This process results in the production of an exceptionally high grade of salt cake, and qualifies for nearly all uses, including many which specify the technical anhydrous grade. All of the finished product, which is very white, passes a 10-mesh U. S. Standard screen, and is retained on a 200-mesh U. S. Standard screen. It is over 99 pct Na2SO4 with main impurities being sodium chloride and magnesium sulphate. Iron content is less than 0.01 pct. As mentioned, the raw material at Monahans is a brine drawn from wells. Stimulated emission from Nd+3 in yttrium uanadate fYVOJ is reported. Single crystals of YVO4:Nd, obtained from Linde Col-p., have improved substantially in the last several months. Pulsed thresholds of YVO, laser rods are now approximately 2 to 3 5, cowparable to tliose for YAG:Nd. Yttrium uanadate crystalli~es irz a space group similar to zircon. All rare-earth vanadates have this structure. Rare-earth ions sucll as Nd+3 which substitutes for Y+3, aye situated irz a strong tetragonal crystal field which lacks inversion symmetry. This condition increases the p&apos;robability of the parity-forbidden f — f transitions. Yttrium anadate has strong absorption bands beyond -1000A. These are clue to Y-O, V-O charge transfer and molecular transitions. Under 2537 and 3660A irradiation pure YVO, fluroresces u bright yel-LOLO. YI&apos;U4:E[t are brieJy described. THIS paper describes some of the optical and laser properties of Nd+3- and Eu+3-doped yttrium orthovana-date (YVO4). It reports laser action for the first time in this low-symmetry host. For some time we have pursued a research program concerning laser hosts&apos; wherein the rare-earth (RE) ion is situated at a site of low crystal symmetry so as to increase the probability of radiative transitions. Single crystals of doped and undoped YV04 are grown from iridium crucibles in an oxyhydrogen gas-fired furnace by a modified Czochralski technique.&apos; This material crystallizes in a D4li tetragonal space group of the zircon (ZrSiO,) type.3 All RE vanadates have the same structure and form solid solutions with YVO4. Therefore, it will be possible to investigate a variety of cross-pumped laser systems, as in the case of yttrium aluminum garnet (YAG).4 At present, ~d&apos;~-doped YAG is one of the most efficient solid-state lasers.5 Accordingly, most of the material to follow will compare the properties of YV04 to those of YAG. Fig. 1 shows the relative transmission of YAG and two types of YVO4. "Pure" YVO4 has a normal absorption edge and is colorless. A second type has a broad absorption peaking near 4200A and is yellow. Rubin and Van uitert6 suggest the yellow material is slightly reduced. Samples of each type are being investigated by electron spin resonance,7 but these studies are so far inconclusive. The pulsed laser threshold is much lower in the yellow material than in the colorless. Therefore, the absorption at 3500 to 5000.4 transfers energy to the Ndi3 ions. Photons of wave length between 2000 and 4500A cause undoped YVO4 to fluoresce at 4800, 5250, 5460, 5540, and 5750A. This emission, previously reported by Brixner and Abramsom,8 is partially quenched by EU&apos;~ and completely quenched by Ndt3 at room temperature due to energy transfer from the lattice to the RE ions. At low temperatures, some lattice fluorescence is present. This implies that the energy-transfer process is in part phonon-assisted. Although the YVO, single crystals used in this work were prepared from Y2O3 containing less than 0.01 pct rare-earth impurities, there is aopossibility that emission lines between 4800 and 5750A are due to dysprosium, terbium, and so forth. However, these lines are not observed in other compounds, prepared from Y2O3, such as YP04, Y2MoO6, and so forth. Furthermore, extensive absorption measurements on our "pure" YV04 single crystals between 0.4 and 5.0 failed to reveal any characteristic rare-earth lines. Fig. 2 compares the absorption spectra of Ndt3-doped YAG and YVO4from 0.6 to 1.0 . The Ndt3 absorptions are labeled according to free ion, R-S coupling. These term designationsQ are appropriate for YAG:Nd. They appear to be inappropriate for YV04:Nd. In YVO, neodymium must substitute for yttrium. The yttrium site is situated In a strong tetragonal field, where point symmetry is (42m) or possibly lower.1° However, the reduced splitting of the Stark components of the YV0,:Nd spectrum implies that the NdT3 ion is in a cubic site. The only plausible explanation for this discrepancy is that the Ndt3 ion is in a low-symmetry site, lacking inversion symmetry, so that a substantial admixture of 4f and 5d wave functions occurs. In this case, R-S coupling is not valid and J is no longer a good quantum number." Consistent with this view, the 4~ metastable level of YV04:Nd has an oscillator strength larger and a

Processing nonmagnetic taconites by selective flocculation-desliming and flotation requires large volumes of water. If impounded without treatment, these off-process waters require excessively large areas for containment. To discharge the waste water into natural waterways would contribute to stream pollution and likely would not be permitted. In U.S. Bureau of Mines experiments conducted in the Twin Cities Metallurgy Research Center&apos;s 900-lb per hr pilot plant, approximately 85% of water requirements for the flotation-based treatment of a Michigan nonmagnetic taconite were met by reclaimed water. Water reclamation of the off-process streams from flotation was accomplished by controlled additions of lime, sodium carbonate, and a synthetic flocculant to reduce turbidities to 51000 ppm equivalent SiO*, while maintaining a Ca(II) content of =16 ppm in the finished effluent. Flotation concentrates of good quality were obtained using the reclaimed water. The cost of chemicals used in water reclamation was approximately equal to the savings in flotation reagents attributed to recycling of the water. Water quality is perhaps as important to flotation as are the reagents used. The character of water is extremely variable, depending on whether the source is a well, lake, or stream, upon the season and temperature, upon prior use, and upon the character of the watershed. All of these factors influence the water hardness and the quantity of other dissolved inorganic salts, turbidity, dissolved and suspended organic matter, dissolved gases, and pH. Frequently, the differences in water quality can measurably influence flotation selectivity, often to the point of spelling success or failure. Water hardness is particularly troublesome in flotation systems employing fatty acids, but other unrecognized constituents may also contribute to peculiarities in flotation behavior. Furthermore, a given water source may be entirely satisfactory in one flotation system, but entirely inappropriate in another. In recent years, society has given more attention than formerly to water use, even in areas where water is plentiful. However, both the demands of a growing population, with increased per capita needs, and also those of industry must be met. As a result, riparian rights must be negotiated with the appropriate government agency or agencies so that consumption of water is often allocated or otherwise controlled. Furthermore, the disposal of off-process industrial and domestic water is coming under the increasing scrutiny of these same governmental units. In these respects, the mineral industry is no exception, so that conservation, water reclamation, and reuse may be expected to assume increasing importance. In 1932, it was stated that, "water reclamation is generally more expensive than the economy in water and reagents resulting from its use. It is employed only if it is urgent to save water."&apos; The economic aspects of this statement may still be true, but the unrestricted use of water is becoming less and less an option of the user. The purpose of this paper is to discuss an investigation conducted by the U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM), in which water reclamation and treatment were undertaken to develop procedures for, and to assess the effects of, water reuse on the flotation treatment of nonmagnetic taconites. This investigation is a logical extension of previous work described by the author and associates at the Twin Cities Metallurgy Research Center employing selective flocculation-desliming and anionic flotation of silica from low-grade, nonmagnetic iron ores2,8 The requirements for the selective flocculation-de-sliming and the anionic flotation of silica processes determined the direction of the investigation. Previous studies had indicated that pH levels of about 11.0 and 11.8 were required for selective flocculation and flota-tlon, respectively. The calcium content of the water was believed to be of importance in both of these operations, and since Minneapolis tap water with a Ca(I1) content of about 16 ppm had been successfully used, an attempt was made to reclaim the process water at an equal level of dissolved calcium. Additionally, the objective was to nullify or effectively limit the effects of dispersants and fatty acid residuals from prior stages of processing. Last but not least, the system of water treatment had to have the capability of reducing turbidities to workable levels. With about half of the effluent being derived from the selective flocculation-desliming step and carrying about 25,000 ppm of highly dispersed, suspended fines, this last objective appeared formidable at the outset. Procedures for water reclamation were derived, in part, from well-known mineral dressing practices, from past observations and investigations, and from concepts contained in various pertinent publications on water treatment."c These procedures involved: 1) flocculation with lime and poly electrolyte-type flocculants, 2) lime-soda-ash softening, 3) chemical precipitation, and 4) mineral surface adsorption. Control was exercised at various stages of water reclamation by frequent measurements of Ca(11), pH, and turbidity.

IN the last several years the coal industry has intensified its effort to solve the growing problem of cleaning and recovering fine mesh coals. On one hand these has been increasing civic pressure for cleaner streams, and on the other hand there has been increasing production of fine mesh coal, resulting directly from adoption of the modern mining methods so essential to the economy of the coal mining industry. Cleaning fine coal with the same precision possible with coarser coals is a difficult task, and for coals finer than 200 mesh it has been impractical. Furthermore, the inclusion of —200 mesh material in the final product markedly increases costs of de-watering and thermal drying, which are necessary steps if coal is to meet market requirements. Consequently these extreme fines have generally been wasted. As a result, problems have been created in many districts because there has not been enough area for adequate settling basins. Wasting of coal in the -200 mesh slimes may account for a loss in washer yield equivalent to 2.0 to 2.5 pct of the raw coal input. With rising mining costs the value of such a loss is constantly increasing and a need for a better solution to the fines problem becomes more pressing every day. From an operating viewpoint, also, continuous removal of extreme fines from the washing plant circuit permits good water clarification practice, improving significantly the overall cleaning efficiency. The obvious desirability of recovering a commercially acceptable coal from washery slimes prompted U. S. Steel Corp. to investigate the merits of the Convertol process developed in Germany." Although this process has been used commercially in Europe for some time, little if any consideration has been given to its possible adoption in the U. S. until very recently. Fundamentals of the Convertol Process: In the Convertol process, droplets of dispersed oil are brought into intimate contact with the solids suspended in the coal slurry to be treated. This contact causes oil to displace the water on the surface of the coal by preferential wetting, or phase inversion, after which the coal particles are allowed to agglomerate in a manner permitting their re- moval from the slurry by centrifugal filtration. The clay and other particles of mineral matter suspended in the slurry do not have the affinity for oil the coal particles have. Consequently the oil treatment is preferential to coal to the extent that more than 95 pct of the oil used reports with the clean coal recovered. Figs. 1 through 3 will clarify the steps involved in the process. Fig. 1 shows the suspended material in the slurry to be treated, which is a thickened product containing 40 to 45 pct solids. Oil is now injected into the slurry under vigorous agitation to produce good oil to coal contact conditions, which result in preferential oiling of the coal particles. These coal particles are then permitted to agglomerate by gentle stirring in a conditioner to form flocs, as shown in Fig. 2. At this point in the process the agglomerated oiled coal can be washed and partially dewatered on a vibrating screen, as shown in Fig. 3. Finally, the washed flocculate can be further dewatered in a high-speed screen basket centrifuge or in a solid bowl centrifuge. Commercial Application of the Convertol Process in Germany: The original Convertol process was developed by Bergwerksverband zur Verwertung von Schutzrechten der Kohlentechnik, G.m.b.H., a German research organization controlled by the Coal Operators Assn. of the Ruhr Valley. The process as reduced to commercial practice in Germany&apos; is shown in Fig. 4. In this process a thickened slurry (40 to 45 pct solids) mixed with a predetermined percentage of oil is fed from a surge tank to the phase inversion mill. After the phase inversion step, the slurry is usually discharged directly to a highspeed screen centrifuge. From 3 to 10 pct oil is used, depending on type of oil, size consist of coal to be recovered, and operating temperature. The top size of fine coal cleaned in Germany by the Convertol process is limited by the size of the openings in the centrifuge screen basket. Any mineral matter coarser than the basket opening, which is generally 60 to 80 mesh, must remain with the oiled coal. If the coal fines have been effectively cleaned down to about 80 mesh, the cleaning performance of the process is practically unaffected by the presence of coarse coal particles. However, since recovery of coal much coarser than 80 mesh is mow economical by conventional methods, it normally becomes more costly to allow substantial percentages of this coarse coal in Convertol process feed. Where the general plant layout does not permit effective cleaning of coal sizes down to 80 mesh or lower. there is some justification for a coarser Con-

MORE and more attention is being paid to the bonding of metals in their solid states. For a better understanding of this technique for joining metals and how it is affected by changes in temperature, pressure, and time at temperature and pressure, a detailed report concerning nickel to aluminum bonding has been published.&apos; In order to broaden the knowledge accrued, some additional work concerning solid state joining of aluminum to copper and aluminum to zirconium was performed. The investigation of the Al-Cu system was considerably more extensive than the investigation of the Al-Zr system. For the A1-Cu system, not only were tensile sudies made but intermetallic penetration rate investigations also were carried out. The effect of temperature on intermetallic penetration rate for the A1-Cu system was determined at 11 tsi pressure, held 2 min. Procedure Apparatus: The hot pressing technique was the means of solid state reaction used and required the equipment depicted in Fig. 1. The following procedure was involved: The two metals to be reacted were placed in an aquadag-lubricated 18-4-1 tool steel die, 16 in. high by 1.440 in. ID, between punches of 1.366 in. diam made of the same material. A thermocouple well was located in the die body 3½ in. down from the top of the die, while another well was located centrally in the bottom punch 8½ in. from the bottom of the die. This die assembly was located in three cylindrical ceramic heating furnaces placed in tandem. Each furnace was controlled individually by a Variac power transformer. In turn, the die and furnaces were placed in a water-cooled stainless steel pot which could be evacuated. A cover, which contained a centrally located Wilson seal with an 18-4-1 1 in. diam ram running through it, was bolted on the pot. After sealing, the pot was evacuated by a roughing pump to 200 microns pressure, after which a diffusion pump was used to bring the pressure down to 5 to 15 u. At this pressure, the furnaces were turned on. As soon as they started to heat, out-gassing of the entire unit raised the pressure to 30 to 400 p. By the time the specimens were at temperature ready to be pressed, approximately 4/2 hr, the vacuum pumps had re-established the 5 to 15 u pressure. Once the desired temperature was reached, the required pressure was applied for a predetermined length of time to the 1 in. ram, through to the top punch, and to the specimen. When the time for keeping the specimen under pressure had elapsed, the pressure was released, the energizing coil current turned off, and the assembly allowed to cool. After cooling, the die was removed from the pot and the specimen was ejected. Specimen Preparation: Two different types of specimens were made for this investigation. One was for subsequent tensile testing, while the other was for determination of intermetallic alloy zone penetration into the parent metals. Tensile Bars—Commercially rolled copper pieces in. thick or zirconium sheet pieces 1/32 in. thick and 1.366 in. diam were placed between commercial 2-S aluminum rod 1 in. thick and 1.366 in. diam. This sandwich in turn was slipped into a 2-S aluminum sleeve 1.438 in. OD and 1.370 in. ID. This sleeve lined the couple up and prevented the aquadag lubricant from getting in between either the A1-Cu or Al-Zr interfaces. Immediately prior to the specimen assembly, the copper or zirconium was abraded on the flat surfaces with 320 grit silicon carbide paper, producing clean smooth surfaces. The aluminum was chemically cleaned just before assembly by: l—degrease in acetone, 2—distilled water rinse, 3—immersion for 3 min in 5 pct NaOH at 70" to 80°C, 4—distilled water rinse, 5—immersion for 2 min in 50 pct HNO3 solution at room temperature, 6—distilled water rinse, and 7—drying in a blast of gas. After the A1-Cu sandwiches were hot pressed and ejected, the specimens were machined such that the aluminum sleeve was removed, and the remaining aluminum was then threaded; the bar so produced was tested later for tensile strength. In all the instances where Al-Cu couples were tested, the specimens broke during the test at the Cu-A1 interface and never within the aluminum or copper. The ultimate tensile strength values at times showed considerable scatter for a set of given reaction conditions. Because of this, as many as three to five specimens were made for a particular set of conditions. The trend of the average tensile strengths obtained was not as conclusive as was the trend of the maximum tensile strengths, the latter values being obtained under optimum reaction conditions. Therefore, the values of ultimate tensile strength given herein are maximums.

Endurance strengths at 10&apos; cycles, fatigue-hardening rates, and endurance strength/0.2 pct proof stress ratios have been determined jbr a range of Cu(Ni), Cu(Si), and S.R.0. Cu(Au) solid solutions. Some douht is cast on simple cross slip models of fatigue hardening in view of opposite composition dependencies of hardening displayed by Cu(Si) and Cu(Au). The temperature dependencies of hardening also are the opposite of predictions made on the basis of a cross slip model. A correlation apparently exists between the fatigue strength/0.2 Pc~ proof s1.re.s~ ratios and rates of fatigue hardening. An increase in PS/PS due to alloying or temperature change is accompanied by a decrease in hardening rate, and vice versa. In recent years there has been much interest in the determination of the dislocation structure of fatigued metals and alloys. The accumulated evidence, e.g., Refs. 1 to 5, suggests that the structure may be dependent on the stacking fault energy, 7, of the fatigued metal in the same way that fatigue hardening rates have also been shown to apparently depend on u .6&apos; 7 The above research followed the various earlier theories relating crack nucleation to ease of cross slip, e.g., Refs. 8 to 131 so "ggesting that y may indeed be the parameter of principal significance in all facets of the fatigue process. However, comparatively little attention has been paid to correlating engineering fatigue data with observations of the above type. Certainly, it would be useful if potential engineering fatigue performance could be assessed from a knowledge of easily determined alloy properties, and the present research originated from this standpoint. TO investigate the widest Possible range of 7 would require the use of two solvent bases, e.g., aluminum and copper, but a reasonable coverage can be provided by copper-based solutions alone. Therefore, it was decided to work with Cu(Ni) and Cu(Si) solid solutions, the approximate stackillg fault energies of which are given in Table I. The y range extends from low, Cu(7.5 at- Pet Si), to moderately high in Cu(2-5 at. ~ct ~i) and two of the Cu(Ni) alloys. The values listed in Table I should be regarded as qualitative only, being derived as follows. Dillamore and smallman14 quote a value of 85 i 30 erg.cm-2 for the stacking fault energy of pure copper, based on an earlier value due to Howie and swannl5 corrected by Brown&apos;s formula.&apos;&apos; Since the ratios (alloy)h(pure copper) have been reported17,18 for Cu(Ni) alloys containing up to 30 pct Ni, approximate ) values for these alloys can be computed, and a rough estimate of 7 for Cu(50 at. pct Ni) obtained by extrapolation. The relatively low y value obtained in this way for Cu(50 at. pct Ni) coincides with the observation of Nakajima19 that the stacking fault probability is a maximum at this composition. Likewise, the y values for the three ~u(~i) alloys are estimates based on values given by Swann and Nuttingo corrected on the basis Of Brown&apos;s estimate that the true 7 values are probably 2.3 times greater than those originally computed. In addition to the above alloys it was decided to investigate short-range ordered (s.R.O.) CU(AU) alloys containing up to 25 at. pct Au. This last alloy has been shown to have a well-defined planar arrangement of dislocations when deformed,21,22 probably due to cross slip being restricted by the S.R.O. Engineering fatigue data was to be represented by the determination of endurance strengths, and these were to be correlated with fatigue hardening and mechanical property data. EXPERIMENTAL I, order to study the desired properties and property changes, the following alloys were prepared: Cu(2.5 at. pct Si), Cu(5.0 at. pct Si), Cu(7.5 at. pct Si), Cu(5.0 at. pct Ni), Cu(25.0 at. pct Nil, Cu(50.0 at. pct Ni), Cu(5.0 at. pct AU), Cu(15.0 at. pct AU), Cu(25.0 at. pct AU). The copper and gold were zone-refined, while the silicon was semiconductor grade. The nickel was of 99.95 p,t. purity.* All alloys were induction-melted in a *Kindly supplied by the International Nickel co. helium atmosphere, appropriate precautions being taken to avoid segregation in the Cu-Au series. Rod stock was obtained by rolling and swag,ng. A few Bridgman single crystals were grown for fatigue-hardening studies, but most material was machined into polycrystalline fatigue speciments of the design shown in Fig. 1, and into polycrystalline tensile and fatigue-hardening specimens of simple cylindrical design. All specimens except Cu(Au) were annealed; the latter were quenched from above T, to produce short-range order. A few of the quenched alloys were examined for long-range order by step-scanning over

The problem of selection of the active slip systems for a crystal undergoing an arbitrary strain was analyzed by Taylor and by Bishop and Hill in terms of a minimum (internal) and a maximum (external) work criterion, respectively. These two criteria have now been generalized to include crystallographic slip on several sets of slip systems, twinning mixed with slip, and slip by (noncrystallographic) pencil glide. The generalized treatment also takes into account the possibility of a Bauschinger effect and of unequal hardening among the shear systems, which were considered in the Bishop and Hill work. Optimization techniques of linear and nonlinear programming are shown to be applicable for the numerical calculation of the minimum or maximum work. In the case of crystallographic shear, the constraint functions are linear and hence the optimal work is obtained as the saddle value of the lagrangian function Wi(y) e minimum and W,(u) + (a) for the maximum, where Wi is the (internal) work, We is the (external) work, Y is the crystallographic shear strain, u is the applied stress, and and are constraints. It is shown that the Lagrangians are functionally the same and the saddle value of one problem is identical to the saddle value of the other, proving that the two analyses are completely equivalent. In the case of pencil glide, although the constraint functions are nonlinear and neither convex nor concave, the equivalence of the optimal values to the saddle value of the Lagrangian (which is again identical for both problems) is still valid. WHEN a crystal deforms plastically by crystallographic shear, five independent shears are generally required to accommodate five independent strain components specifying the deformation. Assuming slip as the only shear mechanism, Taylor1 in 1938 analyzed the deformation in terms of a minimum work criterion. He hypothesized that of all combinations of five slip systems which are capable of accommodating the deformation, the active combination is that one for which the internal work C is a minimum, where 1 TI is the critical resolved shear stress for slip on the 1-th slip system and is the corresponding simple shear. By further assuming equal 72 for all equivalent slip systems and no Bauschinger effect, Taylor re- duced the minimum work problem to one of minimum and applied the analysis to the case of axisym- Metric flow by {111}(110) slip in fcc crystals. However, he did not consider the question of whether the resolved shear stress has in fact attained the critical value for slip on the newly found active systems without exceeding it on the inactive systems. In 1951 Bishop and ill&apos; put forth the maximum work analysis in which slip is again assumed as the only deformation mechanism. In this analysis, the work o1 done in a given strain ij by a stress ujj not violating the yield condition is maximized. In addition, the analysis takes into account the possibility that the critical resolved shear stress for slip may not be equal among the slip systems and that the slip behavior may exhibit the Bauschinger effect. As with Taylor, a single set of slip systems—{111)(110) — was analyzed numerically. It thus appears that the Bishop and Hill treatment is on a more sound physical basis than the Taylor treatment. However, Bishop and Hill showed that where there is equal hardening among all slip systems and when there is no Bauschinger effect, Eq. [11 ] of Ref. 2, as assumed by Taylor, the results of their maximum work analysis are the same as those of Taylor&apos;s minimum work analysis. Hence at least under those conditions there is an implication that the Taylor analysis does lead to a critical resolved shear stress for slip on the predicted active systems without violating the yield condition on the inactive systems. Recently, the Taylor analysis was applied for numerical solutions of the axisymmetric flow problem, for slip on {110}(111), {112}(111). {123)(111) systems as well as a mixture of all three sets of svstems."1 Computational techniques based on the optimization theories of linear and nonlinear programming4 were employed in these solutions. The same techniques were employed in the solutions of an axisymmetric flow problem of deformation by slip on (111) (110) systems and twinning on (111)(112) systems5 which had been considered theoretically from a modified Taylor approach. The utilization of these techniques has led to the realization that the solutions of Taylor&apos;s minimum work problem imply the solutions of Bishop and Hill&apos;s maximum work problem. The two problems turn out to be dual problems in the well known sense of mathematical programming. It is thus the purpose of this paper to first generalize the minimum and maximum work analyses to include crystallographic slip on several sets of slip systems, twinning mixed with slip, and slip by (non-crystallographic) pencil glide, as well as the possibility of a Bauschinger effect and of unequal hardening

This paper will describe the development and application of large-scale integration techniques employed in the fabrication of a germanium multielement array. The array consists of 100 by 228 PNP bipolar transistors fabricated on 5 mi1 centers. Back-biased p-n junction techniques are used for electrical isolation of the individual elements. The end use of the array is a high resolution, large area IR sensor. The monolithic array is fabricated in 1 ohm-cm p-type germanium epitaxially deposited on 6 ohm-cm n-type substrate. Epitaxy was accomplished through the hydrogen reduction of germanium te trachloride. Di-borane was used as the dopant. Base regions are achieved by the diffusion of arsenic from doped oxide or arsine sources. Oxide-masking of the arsenic im-pzlvity was achieved by the chemical deposition of a boron doped glass. The emitter is formed by an aluminum alloy diffusion technique. Vacuum deposited aluminum is used for the emitter, interconnections, and for the contact and bonding pads. ALTHOUGH a great volume of literature pertaining to the development of large scale integration techniques (LSI) has been published for silicon and in particular silicon imaging applications,&apos; to date only a small number of similar devices have been constructed using germanium technology.&apos; Since the physical and chemical properties of germanium are vastly different from those of silicon, the fabrication technology for integrated structures in germanium is also different from that of silicon. In particular germanium does not possess a stable oxide as can be grown on silicon by heating in an oxidizing ambient for masking of dopants and passivation. This paper describes the application of germanium LSI techniques employed in the fabrication of a multielement infrared sensor array. The array is used in a high resolution, large area infrared sensor for operation in the 0.8- to 1.5-u spectral range. Back biased p-n junction techniques are used for electrical isolation of individual elements. Discrete germanium devices have been fabricated routinely for some time. However, mainly due to the lack of a suitable mask for selective doping and the high current leakages inherent in germanium p-n isolation, few monolithic germanium structures have been constructed. THE INFRARED MOSAIC A cross-sectional view of the array is shown in Fig. 1. The monolithic structure consists of 12,800 PNP transistor elements in a 100 by 128 matrix fab- ricated on 5 mil centers. The emitters of each line of transistors are connected together using aluminum interconnects while the strip collectors are connected together in series at right angles to the emitter lines. The selection of this structure is dictated by the readout technique involved. Access to each element transistor is obtained by applying a bias voltage to a particular collector strip and separately interrogating each emitter row. A charge storage, i.e., an integration mode is used for reading out this particular array Construction techniques available for use with germanium do not include a selective p-type diffusion capability for surface concentrations greater than 10" per cu cm and junction depths greater than about 10 u. This fact limits the type of structure that may be used. Therefore, an array of PNP transistors that did not employ p-type diffusions was chosen. The structure was fabricated by growing a 1 ohm-cm p-type epitaxial layer on a carefully prepared 6 ohm-cm n-type substrate. N-type dopants were used for the isolation and base diffusions and alloyed aluminum was used to form the emitter junctions. The array was then completed by evaporation of aluminum interconnections and contact pads. SUBSTRATE AND SUBSTRATE PREPARATION Germanium substrates of (111) orientation grown by both Czochralski and zone leveling techniques were utilized for mosaic fabrication. Czochralski substrates were preferred because of the lower dislocation densities available in this type of material. Dislocation densities for the Czochralski material were typically less than 3000 per sq cm, while those for the zone leveled material were typically less than 5000 per sq cm. All substrates were uncompensated to minimize thermal conversion problems in subsequent epitaxial and diffusion processing. Both in-house and vendor polished wafers were used. The in-house polishing technique employed consisted of an initial gross chemical etch in CP4 to remove saw damage from both surfaces. This was followed by a chemical-mechanical polishing operation of one side of the wafer. The chemical-mechanical polishing solution used was Lustrox 1000 (Tizon Chemical Co.), and consists of zirconium dioxide, sodium hypochlorite, water and a surfactant. The wafer thickness before and after polishing was typically 0.020 and 0.010 in, respectively. THERMAL CONVERSION The problem of thermal conversion of both the substrate and epitaxial layer was particularly acute because of the relatively low carrier concentrations employed in both regions. Myriad problems face all of us in the next decade. Vietnam, poverty, and pollution are perhaps the most pres- sing. A lesser one but still vital to us as a Nation is the slow hut apparently relentless extinction of the mining, metallurgical. geological and petroleum engineer. Are we doomed to take our place in the crossword puzzle with the moa. to be defined like it as an "extinct bird"? Or can we reverse the trend perhaps, in the next decade? The plain fact is we are an endangered species, and must resign ourselves to virtual extinction in the 1970&apos;s unless the trend is reversed. Probably, many of us have felt the problem will solve itself if left in the in-basket long enough, believing, that the trend will reverse solely on the basis of demand for these disciplines. This approach has not worked up to now, it gives no promise of working in the future, and furthermore, the problem has been in the in-basket much too long. The point is simply this: What can each of us do as an individual, or as part of a company, a State agency, a Federal agency, a university, or an organization such as AIME?

CHARLIE WARNER, Chairman of the Petroleum Division, is no stranger to the problems of the oil industry or to those of the Petroleum Division, after more than 25 years of experience in locating and producing oil and more than 22 years of membership in the Institute. He was born at Jefferson, N. Y.. April 27, 1894, and educated in the public schools of New York State and at Cornell University where he studied geology and allied sciences from 1913 to 1917 and received a B.A. degree. Immediately upon completion of this training, he was employed by the Empire Gas & Fuel Co. as a field geologist in Oklahoma and Kansas. Two years later he became district geologist for the Emerald Oil Co. in Oklahoma and Kansas, and in 1920 he rejoined the Empire Gas & Fuel Co. in the capacity of district geologist in Oklahoma. In September of 1921 he began his association with the Houston Oil Co. of Texas. He was district manager for the company in the Mid-Continent area until 1932 when he was transferred to the head office at Houston, where he became superintendent of the land and lease department in 1934 and was elected a director of the company in 1941. In these capacities, and also as petroleum engineer for the company, he keeps in intimate touch with all phases of field activity and with the regulation of the industry by State and Federal agencies.

UNDER war conditions coal immediately assumes a position of highest importance for coal must carry the basic load for industry. The upward trend in production continued through 1941. Bituminous coal production alone about equaled the total output of bituminous and anthracite in 1940. The figures for 1941 approximated 500,000,000 tons for bituminous, and 54,000,000 tons for anthracite, and production of by-product and beehive coke exceeded that of the previous year. The coal industry, under the National Bituminous Coal Act, is going through a period of readjustment, and is beginning to stabilize itself under the statute. The Federal Mine Inspection Nill became law during the year.
