Many of the parts of motor cars, aircraft, etc., that require strong light construction, hence must be made of high-quality steel, are stressed to the maximum limit only in a very small volume. In parts subject to bending stress a line or even a point may take the maximum stress. A series of endurance tests under repeated bending in progress in the U. S. Bureau of Mines laboratories, like similar tests by other investigators, has shown the great difference in life of sister bars of the same stecl, handled in the same way and tested at the same nominal stress. It is known that a surface notch or scratch greatly increases the local stress over the nominal calculated stress; internal notches, such as those formed by inclusions or sonims, probably have a similar effect. From the tetss made by the Bureau of Mines, the cleanliness of the steel at the dangerous section, or point of maximum stress, seems to be one of the most important factors in determining the life of the piece. The more localized the stress, the more does chance, rather than the average properties, dctermine the life of the steel. The usual test, a tension test of a bar taken longitudinally, is not sensitive to the local drop in strength (or tendency to increase the true local stress over the nominal) because of inclusions, which probably have a more injurious effect in hard heat-treated steels, such as must be used when great strength is sought, than in softer steels. Users of steel who make transverse tests find surprisingly low ductility on transverse bars of dirty steel, though the longitudinal tests may be good. FOR blasting in coal mines the U. S. Bureau of Mines recommends that permissible explosives be used exclusively, that these shall be fired electrically, and that where feasible the working place shall be cut or sheared. These recommendations are made to promote safety and prevent mine explosions. Although permissible explosives are not flameless, their lower flame temperature and shorter duration of flame make their use safer than that of non-permissible explosives. Mixtures of air with both methane and bituminous coal dust, which are liable to occur in coal mines, may be ignited by coming in contact with any type of flame or spark of sufficient temperature and duration or by the firing of a blast. In a working place where a blast is to be fired, in addition to the use of permissible explosives, adequate ventilation for the dilution and removal of accumulations or outbursts of flammable gas should be provided. Bituminous coal mines should be rock-dusted as a means of rendering the coal dust harmless. The efficient use of permissible explosives depends upon the proper preparation of the working place, standardized drilling, the strength characteristics of the explosive, and the use of a proper weight of charge. Experienced shotfirers should load, tamp and fire all holes. The major part of the information and data here presented is based on the results of efficiency tests made in large producing mines of Pennsylvania and Illinois. Bureau of Mines Report of Investigations, Serial No. 2697, describes how a standard method of blasting was worked out and put into operation in a mine in southern Illinois.1 This paper contains a description of the methods worked out subsequently in another mine in that district.

A high-temperature solution calorimeter was used to measure directly the partial molar heat of mixing of nickel in the Cu-Ni system, 0 to 15 at. pct Ni and 1200°C; of silver in the Cu-Ag system, 0 to 50 at. pct Ag and 1100°C; and of cobalt in the Cu-Co system, 0 to 6 at. pct Co and 1200°C. The heats of fusion of copper and silver were also detervnined directly. The interpretation of the experimental data was improved by developing machine computational techniques that increased the speed, flexibility, and accuracy of the treatment of the data. THIS paper reports further measurements of the heats of solution of liquid metals with the high-tem- perature solution ca1orimeter.l Measurements were made of the partial molar heats of mixing in the following liquid alloys: Cu-Ni, Cu-Ag, and Cu-Co. In addition the heats of fusion of copper and silver were also determined. The apparatus and the experimental procedure were essentially those of Benz and Elliott.2 Several modifications in the experimental method and the means for interpreting the data were incorporated in this study to improve the results. SINCE the early nineties, there has been a persistent belief in some minds that petroleum in commercial quantities exists in Montana. It is, however, only comparatively recently that commercial produc-tion has been secured. . The earliest deep boring in the plains region of Montana was made in what is now Blaine County, in 1890, by the town of Chinook in an effort to secure artesian water. The well reached a depth of 956 ft. without developing an adequate supply of fresh water, but the drillers reported shows of oil and gas. In 1892, the Quartermaster's Depart-ment of the U. S. Army drilled a hole at Fort Assini-boine, northwest of the Bearpaw Mountains, in essentially flat-lying sediments to secure water for the military establishment. This well reached a depth of 1500 ft. and shows of oil and gas were reported. In 1903 and 1904, two wells were drilled within what is now the Glacier National Park in an effort to develop oil production. Shows of oil and gas were encountered at several horizons but no commercial production was brought in. The extraordinary geological conditions in the area where these wells were drilled should be mentioned. The thrusts from the southwest which, in other places along the Rocky Mountain front, resulted in folding, here developed the great Lewis overthrust fault. It is in fact largely to this fault that the magnificent scenery of the Glacier Park is due. A great thickness of Algonkian strata belonging to the Belt series was thrust northeastward over the upper Cretaceous sediments. The derricks under which the wells referred to were drilled were in moun-tains composed of very old rocks but the holes were drilled through Cretaceous sediments.

Geological investigation and research have contributed greatly in making industrial minerals the basis of an important industry in the state. North Carolina contains a wide variety of industrial minerals and rock. Mica, feldspar, kaolin, halloysite, talc, pyrophyllite, silli-manite, and spodumene are used to illustrate the progress being made. IN a previous paper1 an attempt was made to indicate the importance of industrial minerals in North Carolina and the wide variety of such materials present. The present paper is concerned with geological investigation and research which have made industrial minerals the basis of an important industry in the state. Geological mapping has gone through three stages in North Carolina during the present century. The first stage is represented by excellent reports of which Corundum and the Peridotites of Western North Carolina,2 Volume I, now a classic, is representative. In this report, a geologic map of the western third of the state is shown on a scale of 10 miles to the inch. The next stage is represented by folios" of the U. S. Geological Survey published between 1902 and 1932. Most of these contained 30 min quadrangle maps on a scale of 2 miles to the inch. The third step is represented by reports prepared during the past 10 years which contain geological maps4 on scales varying from 500 ft to 1 mile to the inch, while many mine maps have been prepared on scales varying from 20 to 150 ft to the inch. As the scale on which geological mapping has been done has decreased, the amount of information secured has increased. During the past few years the author has had an opportunity to examine a number of base-metal mines in the western United States, France and Spain. Nearly all of these mines produced some silver, and laboratory studies of the relationship between the silver and the various base-metal minerals in the ore have given some interesting and, it is to be hoped, enlightening facts. As this work was undertaken primarily to ascertain the amount of silver chemically associated with, not controlled by, the various base-metal minerals, the laborious and not always satisfactory method of picking out "pure" samples of each mineral from many localities was employed. However, the results obtained have justified the time that has been spent. Not only have the conclusions arrived at in different mining areas been in accordance with one another but in many instances they have afforded scientific support or explanations for much of the knowledge that operators in the various camps have acquired by practical experience. Although many of the conclusions are not new, many of the facts are, and the results, if they do nothing else, serve to confirm the findings of some of the other workers in this field, particularly the work of Nissen and Hoyt1 and of F. N. Guild2. Dr. S. G. Lasky3 has suggested a novel method for determining from a series of algebraic equations the amount of silver controlled by each of the base-metal minerals but I doubt very much whether his method can be justified, chiefly because there appear to be more variables to be considered than the few that appear in his equations. INTRODUCTION In 1970 the percentage of underground coal extraction by longwall mining methods in the U.S. was 2.1 percent. This figure rose to 4.4 percent in 1976 and is expected to rise to 12 percent by the year 1985. This figure represents 46.0 million tons (51.0 million st) of annual production (Kuti, 1978). In addition, OSM regulations are placing emphasis on subsidence prediction. Section 784.20 of the Office of Surface Mining regulations for underground mining permit applications requires the sutauission of a subsidence control plan which may include monitoring. Because of its nature, longwall mining does not have flexibility in leaving pillars under structures as does room and pillar. Mining in some areas, particularly in the Eastern Coal Field, is approaching more developed areas; therefore, a greater number of structures are expected to be undermined in the near future. Subsidence engineering is becoming an important aspect of mine planning, and should be directed at predicting potential structural damage. The question operators are increasingly faced with is "what will be the subsidence effects for a specific structure at a specific location in respect to a longwall panel?" The most significant variable in assessing the subsidence effect on structures is not vertical subsidence. The variables of strain and tilt are responsible for more structural damage than is the vertical movement. Table I presents threshold values of strain for various structures (Geddes 6 Cooper, 1962). Based on National Coal Board experience, horizontal strain is approximately inversely proportional to the radius of curvature of a circular portion of a subsidence profile; therefore, the radius may be useful in estimating the magnitude of strain caused by subsidence (Hoebs, 1982). The radius of curvature can be determined by the following equation:

R. H. THURSTON, Cornell University, Ithaca, N. Y. (communication to the Secretary): The " tri-axial diagram" was, I think, first employed by me in the work of the " U. 8. Board Appointed to Test Iron, Steel and Other Metals." A model was exhibited to the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and the diagram was first published, and the model described, in a paper presented to the same society at its Nashville meeting in 1877." The problem then presented to its inventor was to find a method of planning a research involving proportions of ternary compositions in such manner that, a limited number of such compositions being tested, the results should give the law of variation in the physical properties of all possible combinations of the three elements, and the actual numerical values of such as were important to the investigator. The investigation of the binary alloys, copper and tin, copper and zinc, and tin and zinc, had been completed and satisfactorily discussed, employing the usual bi-axial diagram, of which the ordinates represented the one, and the abscissæ the other, of the characteristic properties to be studied, the composition being commonly indicated by the abscissæ. In these cases it was easy to ascertain, by the study of a limited number of compounds, the law of variation in strength, ductility, etc., with composition; but, for a long time, the ternary alloys were not attacked, because no simple and satisfactory method presented itself of securing results significant for the whole field by the investigation of a comparatively small number of alloys. The tri-axial diagram was finally hit upon as a means of representing and interpreting results, and researches were at once begun, and in due time satisfactorily completed.

Fort the past five years, an investigation of the endurance properties of metals has been in progress at the U. S. Naval Engineering Experiment Station, Annapolis, Md. As a result of the investigations at this Station1-5 and other laboratories6-11 "endurance limits" of practically all kinds of carbon and alloy steels have been determined and have been correlated with other physical properties, especially with tensile strength. About a year and a half ago, the investigation at the Naval Experiment Station was shifted to non-ferrous metals. As a result, several papers discussing the endurance properties of numerous non-ferrous metals and alloys, especially the alloys of nickel and of copper12-16 have been published. In these papers, stress-cycle graphs illustrate. the endurance properties of each individual metal and alloy, and other graphs illustrate the effect of cold working, heat treatment, and chemical composition on endurance and other physical properties. Endurance tests of non-ferrous metals were made by the machines used in the endurance tests of ferrous metals. 1-4 The specimen for the rotating-cantilever tests, which has been described, 1,2,13 has a conical surface, with taper so adjusted that the stress is nearly uniform over a length of about 1 ½ in. Alternating torsion tests were made with the machine of the inertia types17 and usually by an accelerated-fatigue method.12 As the rotating-cantilever endurance limits of metals are about twice the alternating-torsion endurance limits, the former values are more generally useful in correlating the endurance properties of nonferrous metals. In several recent papers by the writer13-16 correlation of the endurance properties of a number of non-ferrous metals has been discussed.

C. W. GOODALE, Butte, Mont. (member of the committee)- (communication to the Secretary*).-In the discussion of papers presented at the New York meeting of the Institute in February, 1915, and at the Arizona meeting of September, 1916, I referred to the activities of the Bureau of Safety of the Anaconda Copper Mining Co., and I am now submitting a few thoughts by members of the staff of that Bureau. TORGUS H. OAAS, Safety Engineer, Butte, Mont.-The report of the Committee on Safety and Sanitation has described different organizations and methods of promoting safety work. The effectiveness of these methods would aid the beginner in his campaign for safety in choosing the kind of organization and methods best adapted for his field. This can he obtained only by a discussion by those who have long promoted this kind of work, and have met with successful results. As the field is new, the different organizations promoting safety work have not established a common basis of rating for their fatal, serious and slight accidents, so that it is now difficult to get a comparative basis from which to judge the merits of the different systems. C. W. GOODALE.-The U. S. Bureau of Mines adopted, at the beginning, as a basis for its yearly summaries, the number of accidents. per 1,000 men employed, and it is now (quoting from its report for 1915, Technical Paper 168) making the following "classification of injuries:" "Many of the States now have. compensation laws, and in order to conform with their classifications, the bureau's classification of serious and slight injuries for 1915 is on a 14-day (2-week) basis instead of 20 days, as in previous years. Two dilute nickel alloys in each of the systems Ni-Al, Ni-Ti, Ni-Cr, and Ni-Si u:ere internally oxidized at 700° to 900°C for time periods up to 100hr to establish the oxide particle size, depth of oxide penetration, and the change in oxide particle size with depth. Fine (-270) mesh alloy powders were then intevruzlly oxidized, hydrogen sintered, compacted, and extrmded, yielding bar stock for tensile tests at room temperature and creep-mpture tests at 815° to 1093°C. Recrystallization studies were made up to 1400OC. ReCENT studies have clearly indicated that oxide dispersion strengthened alloys exhibit outstanding elevated temperature properties, espe- cially in long-time tests. Certain structural parameters must be observed to achieve optimum properties, namely, micron or submicron interpar-ticle spacing, submicron oxide particle size, and a high level of stored energy.'-5 A number of processes have been utilized to obtain the desired structures, but certain of them appear to offer greater promise. Thus far the most promising method is the internal oxidation of dilute alloys consisting of a relatively noble solvent metal and a readily oxidizable solute element.3'6)7 Several important principles governing internal oxidation have been established in earlier studies;' however, these principles are as yet not adequate to permit alloy development studies. Much of the earlier work was performed on relatively coarse wires or in idealized systems. As a result, there are still a number of unanswered questions which require considerable additional work: a) How does oxide particle size change with depth of penetration of the oxide? How does this vary with the specific type of solute element? b) What is the effect of solute content on the average oxide particle size?

Several years ago the writer was connected with the Mint and Assay Service of the Federal Government as Assistant Assayer at the Salt Lake Assay Office. At that time cyanide bars formed approximately half of the bullion purchased by that office. Disagreement in valuat,ion between the producer and the office was not infrequent and to a lesser extent between the Assay Office and the Mint, this latter issue being soon obviated, however, by adopting uniform methods of sampling the bars. A nice problem seemed to offer itself for research and the writer began a series of experiments which were soon terminated, however, by his going into other work, and which he regrets have not since been completed. The results attained may suggest lines of approach to this problem and are, therefore, offered in this article. Frederic P. Dewey, Assayer of the Mint Scrvice, U. 5. Treasury, has had abundant opportunity to study this phase of metallurgy, and has published several articles relative thereto.1 In the last article cited Dewey quotes analyses of cyanide bullion similar in content to that with which the writer worked, and which show some of the variations met with. In the discussion of these papers,2 comparison has been made in terms of copper bullion, but to the writer this seems of questionable value. Copper bullion may resemble silver bullion, but its similarity to gold bullion with little or no silver content is another thing. The freezing-point diagram of Roozeboom, reproduced on page 881 of the discussion cited, is for the gold-silver series as stated. The original problem under discussion, however, is not this alloy but gold with base metals other than copper. As for the statement that the corners are the worst places or

"For many years it has been known that large bodies of iron ore existed in Iron and Washington counties in Utah. The ore is chiefly hematite—both hard and soft—though some magnetite is found. No definite and complete estimate of the iron ore reserves of the state have been made. The U. S. Geological Survey estimated that 40,000,000 tons of ore were disclosed by development work averaging only 35 feet below the surface of the ore. The ore is found along an area about one and a half miles wide by twenty miles long, and for the most part on the eastern and southern slopes or foothills of Three Peaks, Granite Mountain and Iron Mountain. Later estimates by others have gone as high as ore in sight 164,000,000 tons, probable ore 300,000,000 tons and possible ore 1,000,000,000 tons. Whether this last estimate is too great or not there is sufficient iron ore in Utah to justify the starting of an iron industry.Two companies are now mining iron ore in Utah, the Columbia Steel Corporation and the Utah Iron Corporation. The mine of the Columbia Steel Corporation is at Iron Springs a few miles west of Cedar City. About 650 tons, of ore a day is being shipped to the blast furnace at Ironton. The ore is mined by the glory hole method. After being drilled it is blasted to the bottom of the several glory holes and is dropped through chutes into cars on the ore haulage level below. It is then hauled by electric locomotives to the crushing plant, where it is crushed to blast furnace size before going to storage bins. Some of the softer ore is brought to the chutes by Fresno scrapers."

Ewers (Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research organization, Melbourne, Australia)— Any attempt to elucidate further the meaning of the contact angle, particularly if it deals with the magnitudes of those mysterious quantities rsa and YRL, is certain to receive attention from those interested in the fundamentals of flotation. It is imperative, therefore, that attention should be drawn to a serious defect in the treatment by de Bruyn, Overbeek, and Schuhmann. Their Eq. 5 dy = — ld/u — Th2odiH2n states correctly the relationship between the change in surface free energy dy, the surface excesses Tx and Th2o of the components x and H2O and the changes du, and dph2o in the chemical potentials of these components. This equation applies for constant pressure and con- stant temperature and for the interface of the solid in contact with the solution of X. The relation remains valid when 1.1 is defined so that TH2O becomes zero and the equation becomes dr = — r:dur [17] From this equation de Bruyn et al. correctly concluded that increased adsorption of the collector at the liquid solid interface would reduce the interfacial energy ysl. Their second conclusion, however, that an increase in the contact angle, corresponding to a greater decrease in rsa than in rsL can be attributed to greater adsorption of X at the solid-air interface than at the solid-liquid interface is quite unjustified. There are two general classes of problems in connection with electric furnaces. First, those relating to the best utilization of the electrical power inside the furnace; second, those connected with the bringing of the electrical power to the point where it is to be utilized. Referring particularly to the latter class of problems, many calculations have been made, covering a wide variety of furnaces, to check the electrical capacity and power factor found from test. The following analysis, made for the purpose of determining the maximum capacity and approximate performance of a new furnace, to operate at 160 volts on a 60-cycle circuit, may be of interest. The first characteristic necessary to determine is the inductance, since this is the factor that limits the amount of power which can be put into the furnace. Inductance is calculated from the dimensions of the furnace, according to formulas of the U. S. Bureau of Standardsll as follows. Formula 99, for mutual inductance, is: M = 2l [log 2l/d-1 +d/l] Formula 103, for self-inductance, is: Both of these formulas are approximations which are nearly correct when 1 is great compared to d or R. 1 = length of circuit, in centimeters, d = separation between the conductors, in centimeters, R = geometric mean radius of conductors. For a circular tube, R = the radius of the circle. For a solid circular conductor, R = 0.7788 X the radius of the conductor. For a rectangular conductor, R = 0.2235 X (a + b), a being the length, and b being the width of the rectangle. THE year 1924 saw little change in the production of oil and gas it either Pennsylvania or New York. In the early months of the year the price of Pennsylvania crude oil, $4.00 to $4.50 a barrel, was sufficiently high to cause operators to lay plans for rather extensive drilling opera-tions. But when, in August, the price dropped to $2.85 a barrel, there was no inducement for new work and drilling was curtailed. In spite of the curtailment, however, the combined production of the two states for the year showed a slight increase over 1923, the production being 8;859,000 bbl. in 1923, and 8,901,000 bbl.1 in 1924. The increased production was due entirely to. the continued development of flooding operations in the Bradford field, all other oilfields showing a decline for the year. TABLE 1. Natural gas in Pennsylvania is fast being recognized at its true worth and the increased prices allowed 'the gas companies for their product induced quite a bit of new work. The relative importance of natural gas compared with manufactured gas is shown in Table 2.2
