FIFTY years ago the Utah Copper enterprise at Bingham was just getting under way. An epic in metal mining was in the making. Throughout the West the bonanza deposits were approaching exhaustion and most ore still went direct to smelter. But concentrators were shortly to be constructed for treating milling grade ores, and most important, the pilot plant for the Utah Copper enterprise was being built that year at the mouth of Bingham Canyon. The same decade was to see development at the Inspiration mine in Arizona of the most important new mining method for 50 years to come—undercut block caving. Although the average grade of ore being mined has been declining for 50 years, and wage rates and prices of supplies have been greatly increased, the mining industry has continued to grow and to prosper. Technology has advanced to a point where minerals can be mined under the most severe conditions. The hardest rock can be drilled and broken and the heaviest ground handled. Large or small, an ore-body can be mined successfully, at any desired rate of production. It is possible to pump great volumes of water and to ventilate the most extensive workings; air conditioning has made practicable the mining of ore where the rock temperatures are beyond those that can be borne by man. Mining today in the U. S. is a huge earth-moving operation. In 1953 nearly 2 billion tons of material were mined for direct use or for processing. Stripping at open-cut mines totaled about 1.7 billion cu yd. Table I gives relative tonnages of the branches of the mineral industry in 1953. In addition to the solid materials moved, 350 million tons of petroleum and 340,000 tons of gas were produced in 1953. Fifteen million tons of salt and 5 million tons of liquid sulphur were pumped from wells. An appreciable amount of copper was recovered by leaching old mine workings and dumps. Total value of minerals produced in 1953 was $14.4 billion: oil and gas $7.6 billion, coal $2.6 billion, nonmetallics $2.4 billion, and metals $1.8 billion. Formidable problems face some branches of the industry today, especially pertaining to increased output tons per manshift. The time has come when these problems should be reappraised. With current wage rates, the industry no longer can afford to pay men to do manual labor. It should be recognized, also, that the miner is a skilled worker; efforts to promote the dignity of his calling and his pride of accomplishment have yielded beneficial results. Mineral deposits occur under widely varying conditions. In most instances the degree of support needed by the roof and walls is the deciding factor in selection of an underground mining method. The degree of support needed, in turn, is governed by natural physical characteristics of the ore and its enclosing rocks. Mine operators, of course, learn to judge ground by observation, and an experienced mine boss generally can anticipate what will happen following any given mining operation. A more scientific approach, however, would be advantageous in most cases. More should be known about the strength of the ore and the enclosing rocks, more about stresses set up in the ground when ore is removed, and more about the mechanics of moving ground. Better understanding would work both ways: first, favorable rock conditions could be fully utilized for more efficient mining, and second, hazards of rock falls could be minimized, loss of ore in mining reduced, and expenses caused by ground pressures and subsidence lowered. In general, mining comprises breaking the ore or rock in place, supporting the mine workings, and transporting the ore to the surface. This latter is a materials handling problem. Ventilation, of course, must be provided, and the mines must be kept free of water. Development work at some places is the most important cost item in extracting ore. Drilling and blasting remain the usual practice for breaking ore or rock from place except, of course, at block-caving mines. The drilling and blasting practice at a mine must fit the mining method. By executive order of the President, dated June 25, 1918, the investigation of matters relating to gas warfare, which had been initiated by the Director of the U. S. Bureau of Mines early in 1917, and had been continuously maintained and improved since, that time, was transferred to the recently created Division of Gas Warfare of the War Department. On the occasion of this transfer, both the President and the Secretary of War took occasion to speak most highly of the efficient service that had been rendered by the Bureau of Mines. It gives us great pleasure to reproduce here a letter from the President and from the Secretary of War, bearing on this subject and also to append a brief review of the work of the Bureau of Mines, prepared by its Director, Mr. Van H. Manning. The White House, Washington. June 26, 1918. MY DEAR MR. MANNING: I have had before me for some days the-question presented by the Secretary of War involving the transfer of the chemical section established by you at the American University from the Bureau of Mines to the newly organized Division-of Gas Warfare in which the War Department is now concentrating all the various facilities for offensive and defensive gas operations. I am satisfied that a more efficient organization can he effected by having these various activities under one direction and control, and my hesitation about acting in the matter has grown only out of a reluctance to take away from the Bureau of Mines a piece of work which thus far it has so effectively performed. The Secretary of War has assured me of his own recognition of the splendid work you have been able to do, and I am taking the liberty of enclosing a letter which I have received from him, in order that you may-see how fully the War Department recognizes the value of the services. I am to-day signing the order directing the transfer. I want, however, to express to you my own-appreciation of the fine and helpful piece of work which you-have-done, and to. say that this sort of team work by the bureaus outside of the direct war-making agency is one of the cheering and gratifying evidences of the way our official forces are inspired by the presence of a great national task. PRESIDENT: In connection with the proposed transfer of the chemical section at. American University from the Bureau of Mines to the newly constituted and consolidated Gas Service of the War Department, which you are considering, I am specially concerned to have you know how much the War Department appreciates the splendid services which have been rendered to the country and to the Army by the Department of the Interior, and especially by the Bureau of Mines under the direction of Dr. Manning. In the early days of preparation and organization, Dr. Manning's contact with scientific men throughout the country was indispensably valuable. He was able to summon from the universities and the technical laboratories of the country men of the highest quality and to inspire them with enthusiastic zeal in attacking new and difficult problems which had to be solved with the utmost speed. I do not see how the work could have been better done than he did it, and the present suggestion that the section now pass under the direction and control of the War Department grows out of the fact that the whole subject of gas warfare has assumed a fresh pressure and intensity, and the director of it must have the widest control so as to be able to use the resources at his command in the most effective way possible. The proposal does not involve the disruption of the fine group of scientific men Dr. Manning has brought together, but merely their transfer to General Sibert's direction. IN no part of the world other than a small area in Pennsylvania is anthracite mining an industry of major magnitude. As the deposits of anthracite in the United States are limited virtually to Pennsylvania, the difficulties of this industry have been commonly considered a state rather than a national problem. However, there is also national interest in the conservation and wise utilization of all the country's fuel resources and in the control of interstate waterways. The anthracite industry is confronted with a serious problem of water accumulation in many of the mines, a problem that must be solved in the near future if progressively higher mining costs are to be avoided. It cannot be solved by the operating companies without state or Federal aid, or both, owing to the magnitude of the work required, the diversity of interests of the coal and surface ownerships, the hazard to the whole mining community, and interests affected outside the mining region. 'The costs of abating the ever-increasing surface seepage to mine workings and of handling this seepage once it has occurred are beyond the eco¬nomic resources of the operating managements.

DESPITE many handicaps and in the face of many discouragements anthracite and bituminous coal producers continue to supply the needs of the nation now vastly multiplied by the demands of the greatest war of all time, total output being about 620,000,000 tons of bituminous and 64,445,000 of anthracite. OWING to the large area included in the Yellow Pine mining district, and the-varied nature of its mineral deposits, a detailed geological description of the district could be covered only in an extensive monograph. This paper is intended as a description of the most prominent geologic features only with special reference to those of economic importance. The first mention of the district was in 1903 by J. E. Spurr,1 who briefly describes the structural geology of the Spring Mountain range. In 1906, H. F. Bain2 briefly described the Potosi mine. James J. Hill,3 of the United States Geological Survey, visited the district for a brief period in 1912, the result of which is an excellent reconnaissance report, covering the district in some detail but necessarily with brevity. Since that time, articles covering special features of the district have appeared in the technical press, including some by the writer, and a notable description of the Boss mine, by Adolph Knopf,4 appeared in 1915. Development of the district during the past few years has progressed so rapidly and with so many notable discoveries, particularly with reference to the rare metals, that a further description at this time may prove of interest. The writer's acquaintance with the district is based on 7 years' continuous residence in the vicinity, beginning with the spring of 1910.

THE Southeast Missouri division of the St. Joseph Lead Co. normally hauls and hoists over 5 million tons of lead ore each year. This ore is mined in the stopes and headings of 20 mines, hauled to a main line system, see above, and transported up to 6.4 miles to ore-hoisting shafts. Average haulage distance is 2.16 miles. A few years ago a distinguished mining engineer visiting this area for the first time remarked, "You do not have a mining problem; yours is a haulage problem." Its relative importance may be gaged by the fact that mine haulage represents about 25 pct of the total cost of mining ore, the most costly single underground operation

On Tuesday evening, February 21st, a reception of visiting societies was held in the Windsor Hall. Hon. George Irvine, Q. C., President of the General Mining Association of the Province of Quebec, occupied the chair, and, after welcoming the guests of the occasion in the name of that Association, introduced Mayor Desjardins, who expressed a cordial greeting for the city of Montreal. After appropriate acknowledgements from the President and the Secretary of the Institute, President Birkinbine delivered his presidential address. The first regular session of the Institute was held on Wednesday morning, February 22d, in the Physics Building of McGill University, where all succeeding sessions were also held. THE Transactions of the Institute afford abundant evidence of the general recognition by mining engineers of the importance of a safety-lamp which will not only give warning of the presence of fire-damp, but will also indicate the proportion in which it is present.' Mining-men are only too familiar with the frequent and sudden changes that constantly occur at the working-face of a gaseous mine. Nothing illustrates more forcibly the pregnant condition of the strata enfolding the seam and the seam itself, than the fact that a circulation of perhaps 150,000 cu. ft. of air may contain 2 or even 3 per cent. of marsh-gas, representing a volume of from 3,000 to 4,000 cu. ft. of this gas pouring-out each minute from the natural strata into the mine-workings. It would, indeed, be strange if this great outflow of gas were always constant, and it creates no surprise that such earth-breathings, as they may be called, are spasmodic and irregular in their wane and flow. There are other causes that act to vary the gaseous condition of mine-air. Gas has a tendency, often very manifest in mine-workings and airways, to stratify and, at times, to travel long distances in veins or streams. It is common to catch and lose the gas in the lamp when making a test. At times two lamps, held side by side in an air current, will indicate different gaseous conditions of the passing air. When testing for gas, the lamp may suddenly fill with flame, in a mine-chamber, where a moment before a careful test showed the presence of but 1 per cent. of gas. AMONG the comparatively few A radical changes in mining equipment in recent years is the introduction and use to an ever greater degree of detachable bits for rock drills. Just how great the possible field for economic application of this innovation is, and to what ex- tent detachable bits are used instead of the conventional type of drill steel, are matters of conjecture. Just as a rough approximation, one might conceive that at least three-quarters of the drilling done in mines today could better be performed by steel with detachable bits, instead of only about one-quarter as at present.

W. L. Saunders, New York, N. Y.:—Mr. Parker's paper, though entitled Conservation of Coal, might also be called the Conservation of Life in the Coal-Mines of the United States. No subject is of greater importance to mining-men at the present time than information from experts as to how to save coal and how to save human lives in mines. That the casualties in the coal-mines should exceed 3,000 in the year 1907 is simply appalling, and that 1,000 men should have been killed in a single year through explosions alone, and that so good an authority as Mr. Parker should say that " a prolific cause " is an "improperly-prepared blast" or "the failure on the part of the miner to undercut his coal," points to the importance of activity not only among mining engineers but also, through experts, by the legislatures of the respective States. THE area in which spodumene-bearing pegmatites occur extends from Gaffney, S. C., in a northerly direction to Lincolnton, N. C., a distance of about 16 miles. The zone averages 2 miles in width. Interest in this area was first aroused by the discovery of small amounts of cassiterite in the pegmatites and in greissen which occurs on the walls of some of the pegmatites. Attempts were made from 1880 into the 1920's to mine and concentrate cassiterite, but there were no successful operations. In 1935 L. M. Williams became interested in the area and began prospecting by trenching and sinking several small shafts. He gradually gained control of a considerable acreage south of the city of Kings Mountain, N. C. Mr. Williams states that he produced some ore from a shaft which he shipped to the Maywood Chemical Co. in the late 1930's. In 1937 G. H. Chambers of the Foote Mineral Co. visited the area and examined several properties, but the lithium market was too small to support the necessary concentrating plant.

Inquiries are frequently made concerning the chalk- and clay-beds of Arkansas, usually with a view to the manufacture of Portland cement. The chalk-deposits were first described by Professor R. T. Hill in the annual report of the Geological Survey of Arkansas for 1888, vol. ii., pp. 153-162. Since the publication of that report I have visited localities then unknown, and have accumulated considerable additional information concerning these deposits, dl of which is brought together in the present paper. My report upon the clays of the State has never been published; only a few of the more conveniently available deposits are mentioned in the present paper. The Chalk-Deposits. Stratigraphic Position of the Chalk.—The chalk-deposits of Arkansas belong to rocks of Cretaceous age. The Cretaceous rocks are confined to a single definite area in Southwest Arkansas. Beginning on the Ouachita river, a little northeast of Arkadelphia, its southern or upper margin follows a line about five miles southeast of, and approximately parallel to, the St. Louis, Iron Mountain and Southern Railway from Arkadelphia

Brazil is one of the most outstanding examples of economic development of our time. Its amazing growth record is substantiated by a GNP which has increased at an average rate of 92% for the period 1968-1970 and estimates for 1971 range from 11.7-12.5%. Hence, this growth, coupled with a more relaxed attitude of the Brazilian government towards foreign participation in business opportunities and the remittance of profits out of the country, has caused many exploration companies to reevaluate the potential of Brazil. Despite recent press notices and publicity, Brazil is still not a mining country in the tradition of Canada or Australia. It is still basically an agriculture and manufacturing country.

THE Midvale mill of the United States Smelting Refining and Mining Company is situated on a flat site whose elevation is 50 ft above that of the Jordan River. Tailings are impounded in the area between the river and the flat upon which the mill and railroad switchyard are located. The water supply is pumped from the Galena canal which leads from the river at a point some ten miles to the south. The mill has a present capacity of approximately 1700 tons daily. It started out originally in 1926 as a 750 ton three-unit plant. The tonnage was gradually increased to 1200 tons by 1934, and in late 1935 a fourth unit was added. The accompanying flowsheet shows the principal equipment and how it is utilized. The ore is principally sulphide with varying degrees of oxidation, with individual lots ranging widely in both precious and base metal content. Safety and health are no longer secondary responsibilities but must be of paramount concern to every mining operation, according to Anthony J. Thompson, an attorney with Hamel, Park, McCabe & Saunders of Washington D.C. The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) forecasts an estimated 19,000 inspections during 1979, and the economic and psychological impact of these inspections may he significant. To illustrate his point Thompson reviewed the experiences of a relatively large operation during a recent MSHA visit. The inspector was on the premises for two months, issuing between 250 to 300 "significant and substantial" (s&s) citations. During the most intensive period, about one month in duration, the operation experienced a production loss estimated between 2500 to 3000 tons; an accident rate up 30% over the previous month and 20% over the same month in the preceding year; 100% of the safety director's and safety engi¬neer's time was devoted to the inspection; 50% of top level management's time; and 90% of the mid-level or front line supervisory's time.

In a previous paper upon the enrichment of mineral veins by later metallic sulphides,? the writer has shown that certain masses of rich ores, such as are found in many mines, either near the water-line or as bonanzas in depth, are of secondary origin, and are due to a leaching of lean ore and the concentration of the material by reaction between the solution and the unaltered ore below. The geological and mineralogical evidence is believed to form an adequate basis for a chemical and physical explanation of the phenomenon. In the present paper the writer will give a brief synopsis of this theory, and will apply it more particularly to deposits of the precious metals, laying special emphasis upon the dependence of such enrichments upon the presence of iron sulphide (as pyrite, etc.) in the primary ore, and upon structural features which control the circulation of the enriching solutions below the water-level. It is believed that many, though not all, of the bonanzas arid pay-shoots of rich sulphide ores, especially those carrying gold and silver, which are encountered in ore-deposits, are of such secondary origin. Apparently it is essential that the occurrence and structural relations of such ore-masses should be understood, as the success of the mine is often dependent upon the finding and extraction of these ores. A legitimate deduction, too, is that such ore-deposits decrease in value With depth. As my own studies have been mainly in Montana, my illustrations must be drawn from the ore-deposits of this and adjacent States, with such as I have noted in hurried visits else-

FROM almost every point of view, petroleum was "strategic mineral number one" during the World War that ended in 1945. Even the spectacular advent of the atomic bomb in the final days of the conflict did not displace it from its position of prime importance, although within a few years uranium will almost certainly be the "number one" material in the minds of military strategists, if it is not even now in that position. But both as fuel and as raw material for chemical industries, petroleum will hold the center of the stage for many years to come. Hardly any other substance illustrates so fully the manner in which science and technology may be combined to achieve the utmost success in contributing to human efficiency and comfort.
