THE Cornwall Ore Mines, Division of the Bethlehem Steel Co., at Cornwall, Lebanon County, consists of two separate magnetite ore bodies, approximately one mile apart. The one ore body was an outcrop in which open-pit mining operations were begun in 1742 and continued without interruption. This mine is also served by a shaft for mining that portion of the ore body not recoverable by open-pit methods. The other property had no outcropping and is entirely an underground operation. This mine, cap-tioned No. 4 mine, is serviced by two shafts 220 ft apart. The No. 4 shaft is for hoisting rock and ore, and the No. 5 shaft is for handling men and ma- terials. The shafts are on a catenary curve, closely following the dip of the ore body. Slope of the shafts at the collar is 36", flattening to 26" at the bottom. The footwall at Cornwall is a traprock which varies structurally from solid to highly fractured. Grizzly stations at the top of each chute raise were reinforced by setting timber sills on concrete. Occasionally it was necessary to concrete the entire chute raise. Concreting was done by using 35-yd electric mixers set up in the breaking subs. Sand, stone, and cement were hoisted up through the chute raises to the breaking subs. Late in 1937 it was decided to eliminate chute raises and breaking subs in future development. Haulage levels are 50 ft apart vertically. When ore is below a 40 " dip, slushing drifts are driven normal to the haulages and on 40-ft centers. In a few areas, ore dips greater than 40" and slushing drifts are then placed parallel to the haulage drifts. William Clinton Brown, Brooklyn, N. Y.: The demand for an apparatus for cooling water for condensers, refrigeratingmachinery and air-compressors, as well as water-jacketed furnaces, has led manufacturers to put such an apparatus on the market, so that it is now possible to purchase a cooling-tower, properly designed and constructed, by simply stating the amount of water to be cooled and the temperatures of the hot and the cold water. The principle is similar to that described by Mr. Henrich, but wood is not used in the best apparatus. There are two great objections to wood: First, it cannot last long under the very trying conditions to which it is subjected; and second, it absorbs the organic matter with which water in constant use becomes impregnated, and the resulting odor is very disagreeable. A few days ago I saw a cooling-tower and condenser, built by the Henry R. Worthington Co., in operation at the Edison electric-lighting station in Brooklyn, N. Y., cooling the water for a 700 horse-power condenser. It consisted of a large stack of iron, about 15 feet in diameter by about 30 feet high. This stack was filled with tiling through which the water falls. A whirligig distributes the water evenly over the top, and a large fan, about 6 feet in diameter, driven by a 10 horse-power electric motor, blows air into the bottom, thus giving a positive circulation. The water, in running down the sides of the tiling, is met by the blast of air, and enough is evaporated to cool the rest. The vacuum-gauge on the condenser showed 26 inches; so the condenser was undoubtedly getting sufficient cool water.

"With a total value to date of well over $200,000,000.00 for its ore production, the Tintic mining district, which is about 100 miles southwest of Salt Lake City, ranks as one of the three main ore producing areas of Utah. In it are located the biggest silver mines of the country, silver having been the chief metal produced in the camp since its start. Tintic's silver production to date has a total value of over $ 100,000,000, approximately half of the value of the camp's ore production, the balance being roughly divided among lead, gold and copper.Discovery of the camp was made in the late sixties. Lack of transportation and ore reduction facilities delayed extensive development of the area for nearly a decade.In recent years Tintic's ore production has ranged from 350,000 to 400,000 tons annually. In 1 924 the camp produced one-eighth of the silver produced in the nation with an output of 7,729,700 ounces. Its lead production was 77,765,000 pounds and its gold production 26,285 ounces.The known mineralized area of the district is found in a broad syncline striking north and south. The west limb plunges sharply and extends for a distance on its dip of approximately one and a half miles to the trough. The east limb raises gently through a distance of about two miles to the east limit of known mineralization. This general structure is broken by local faulting throughout the district, the local structural conditions playing an important part in the ore deposition. The north end of the fold is obscured by a rhyolite flow and the south end stops against a monzonite stock."

E. OROWAN*—I observed the phenomenon of jerky yielding many years ago with zinc25 and cadmium single crystals. A significant point was that the jerks occurred not only when the stress was raised but also (sometimes, after a pause of many minutes during which no trace of creep was observable) at constant stress. The phenomenon may be closely linked with the inertia of the testing machine and of the specimen, although the inertia alone cannot account for it. If, during the test, the resistance of the material to plastic deformation suddenly diminishes while the applied force remains constant, a sudden deformation follows until the yield stress has risen, by strain hardening, to the level of the applied stress (= the value of the previous "upper yield point."). When this is reached, the rate of deformation has attained a maximum value because, up to this moment, the applied force was higher than the plastic resistance of the specimen, and the difference was used for accelerating the moving parts of machine and specimen. The kinetic energy accumulated is now transformed into plastic work by further deformation; that is. the deformation overshoots the point at which the plastic resistance equals the applied static force. When the kinetic energy has been used up, therefore, we are left with a specimen the yield stress of which is higher than the applied stress, and no further deformation can occur (apart from a little creep) until either the applied stress has been raised to the new yield stress level, or the yield stress has fallen by thermal recovery to the level of the applied stress. While this occurs, a new upper yield point can develop, for example, by precipitation.26

The sums given in the accompanying table are those actually paid for material and labor up to about August, 1875; but, as some parts of the machinery were not wholly completed at the starting of the works in September, 1875, the statement cannot be taken as an absolutely correct note of the total cost. A complete description, with engravings of the building and machinery, was given in Engineering, April 26th, 1878, in a paper by Messrs. A. L. Holley and Lenox Smith, to which convenient reference may be made. A detailed list of the construction accounts has been given in a paper, by the present writer, in vol. vi, Transactions of the Institute. A summary is given in the table of the items in each class which enter into the total cost, and also a note of the proportion which each of these items forms of the whole. A concise view may thus he obtained of the facts embodied in the statement as a whole, even though it cannot lay claim to completeness in showing the entire or final cost. An urgent suggestion has reached the writer from a distant country that such statements of cost to be really most serviceable should give the details in days of labor, in weight of iron, and in number of brick, and to this an assent is most cordially yielded. It is true, however, that the mere labor of copying arid compiling these details to such a degree of minuteness, would be very great, and, in any event, the probable difference between the plans of an existing establishment and one projected, would be so wide as to render even so complete a statement of cost of little more real service than the approximate notes given herewith.

Describes important developments in, four counties, all of which brought in 40° oil. Indications are favorable for the future, although the daily production of the agate decreased 19,000 bbl. during the year 1923. THE state of Kansas had a daily average crude-oil production of about 87,000 bbl. at the beginning of the year. This showed a steady but consistent decline during the 12 months, so that the daily average production at the end of the year was slightly over 68,000 barrels. GREENWOOD COUNTY THE most active development in Kansas during the year was in Green-. wood County, in a line from near Sallyards in T 25-R 9 to east of Madison in T 22-R, 11. The main part of. this development has been in a succession of pools beginning at the south with the Polhamus pool in 34-24-9 and 3 and 4-25-9; Thrall pool in 28, 29, 32 and 33-23-10; Burkett pool in. 13, 23, 24 and 26-23-10; Seeley and Wick pool in 22, 27, 28, 32 and 33-22-11 and 5, 6, 7, and 8-23-11; Frohm pool in 11, 14 and 15-22-11; Madison pool in 31 and 32-21-12 and 6, 22, 12 and 1-22-11. Some of these pools, have two or more sands, locally called Bartlesville and Burgess Sands. They range in. depth from 1850 ft. near Madison to 2450 ft. near Sallyards, the general dip being to the west. The thickness of these sands runs from 20 to 100 ft., the initial production of the wells being 50 to 1000 bbl. of 40-gravity oil or better.

Five of the geologic horizons that yield oil in other parts of the world are represented in Brazil; namely, the Devonian, Carboniferous, Permian, Cretaceous, and Tertiary. Thus far, the first two have shown no evidences of being oil bearing within Brazilian territory. Not enough exploring has been done to permit trustworthy comparisons of the relative importance of the Permian, Cretaceous, and Tertiary as oil-bearing horizons in this country. The most important, indeed almost the only, information available relates to the locations of the areas and to the structural features of the several horizons. The theories regarding the physical conditions under which these rocks were laid down, however, I regard of the utmost importance. Permian Rocks of Permian age cover an enormous area in Brazil, extending from Rio Grande do Sul to Maranhao on the north, and to Matto Grosso on the west. These Permian rocks in many places are known to include oil-bearing shales and in some locations contain small veins of gilsonite. The geologic map of Brazil shows that the Permian area is widely distributed, but there is considerable doubt about the origin of some of the rocks. Some of the lower Permian beds in southern Brazil contain marine fossils, but in Minas no fossils have as yet been found in them, and in Bahia, at only one locality have a few Permian plants been found. Indications of oil have been found in the states of Sa0 Paulo, Parana, and elsewhere farther south, but wells drilled in the Permian of SaO Paulo near the Morro do Bofete did not find oil. One well has been started, by the Brazilian Government, in the Permian of Parana near Marechal Mallet, close to latitude 26" south, but thus far oil has not been found.

In January last I published in the Engineering and Mining Journal a table giving, with a considerable degree of accuracy, the production of anthracite coal for the year 1874. At that time it mas impossible to give any correct estimate of the production of bituminous coal, for the returns I had been able to secure from such distant and scattered districts were not always forwarded punctually, and the work of .obtaining anything like a true estimate of the coal mined in districts from which I was unable to obtain official returns was both laborious and tedious. As will be seen from the detailed reports furnished herewith, I have succeeded in obtaining tolerably accurate returns of 20,093,704 tons; and upon careful revision by numerous well-informed local authorities, my first estimate of the amount of coal not officially returned to me has grown very considerably; indeed, as I get more information on the subject I find that our bituminous coal production greatly exceeds the amount we have been accustomed to hear it placed at, aggregating as it does, 26,465,704 tons. Mr. Andrew Roy, State Inspector of Mines for Ohio, has reported the production of Ohio at 4,168,445 tons, while his first estimates were but 3,820,000 tons; and similarly, in other cases, the more full the returns direct from the mines the more incorrect do I find all previous reports. I am able now to furnish, not an accurate statement, indeed, but by far the most full and reliable one that has yet been published of our coal production. The amount of labor involved in obtaining this admittedly imperfect report has been simply enormous. VAGUE rumors and stories have been heard, from time to time, about the diamond and gold deposits of southern Venezuela. It is perhaps appropriate, at this time of revived interest in gold mining, to publish a few facts in regard to this country, which has been undergoing exploration since the fifteenth century. Gold and diamonds are found principally in the State of Bolivar which lies in southeastern Venezuela and is bounded by British Guiana on the east and Brazil on the south (see Fig. 1). The famous Mt. Roraima is situated at a point where these three countries meet in a common point (see Fig. 2). Some gold is also found in the southern part of the territory of Amacuro. Good oil prospects exist in the northern part of this same territory. Diamonds are found on the Caroni river from Rio Paragua to the village of Guri. Another small district is on the headwaters of the Cuyuni river. Quartz veins containing gold are chiefly exploited in

OCTOBER will be western month for the Institute. With meetings at Spokane, Tulsa, Los Angeles, and San Francisco, and with a large number of American Institute of Mining Engineers members and their families in the party sailing out through the Golden Gate to Japan on the afternoon of the tenth, the major activities of the Institute will, for this month at least, be west of the Mississippi. Despite cancellations due to necessity, most of the officers of the Institute will be present and taking part in some one or more of the Western meetings. Prof. Robert S. Richards, our senior past-president, will attend both the Spokane and San Francisco meetings and then go to Japan. President Bradley will preside at the San Francisco meeting and then head the party going to Tokyo. At Tulsa and Los Angeles, the principal officers of the Petroleum Division will be present and active and at all the meetings, directors, ex-directors and -present and past officers will be on the job and keeping things moving.

FOR centuries the pumping of water has been one of the chief problems to be overcome by the persistent men who win the mineral wealth of the world. Profitable operations have often been forced to suspend activities as the mine penetrated well below the water table or when sudden rushes of water were encountered. To operate below the local water level requires continuous pumping equal in volume to the amount of water flow¬ing into the mine workings. The Bulletin. As already announced in the January Bulletin, this publication will be issued during the coming year monthly instead of bi-monthly as heretofore. Among other reasons for this change, it is desired to effect thereby the earlier transmission to members of important papers, lists of candidates for membership, and other items of timely information. The New Haven Meeting. As already announced in special circular, the XCVIth meeting of the Institute for the reading and discussion of papers will be held at New Haven, Conn., beginning Feb. 23, 1909. The Secretary of the Local Committee is Prof. J. D. Irving, Box D, Yale Station, New Haven. The program embraces visits to many interesting works in New Haven, Ansonia, Bridgeport, etc. The leading topics for discussion at the sessions will be: The Conservation of Natural Resources; A Sea-Level Canal at Panama; and The Technical Education of Mining Engineers. But papers on other subjects also are announced. A supplementary session of this meeting will be held in New York City, at some time during March, 1909, as a joint session with other national engineering societies, for the further discussion of the subject of The Conservation of Natural Resources. A Pacific Coast Meeting. The XCVIIth meeting will be held on the Pacific Coast, including a visit to the Exposition at Seattle, and various other points en route going or coming, depending upon the route and program finally adopted. More definite information will be announced at the New Haven Meeting, or at the earliest possible date thereafter.
