The Morning Star mine is one of numerous historically mined gold-quartz lodes in the Preservation Inlet goldfield of southwest Fiordland. The mine is hosted in Early Ordovician metasedimentary rocks that are composed predominantly of psammitic and pelitic lithologies. These rocks still contain their primary depositional features and are characterised by upper greenschist facies metamorphic grade.   The Morning Star mine lies on the eastern limb of a gently south plunging anticline. A bedding parallel fault-vein and an associated network of minor quartz veins hosts mineralisation. The main fault-vein structure strikes N-NW, dips steeply (~60¦) W, has a strike length of ~350 m, a vertical extent of ~170 m and is up to 2 m in thickness. The internal structure of the fault-vein consists of laminated quartz, massive and fibrous quartz, and silicified breccias/cataclasites. Gold is typically coarse grained (~1 - 2 mm) and associated with pyrite, arsenopyrite, chalcopyrite, tetrahedrite and galena. The geometry of the Morning Star mine is similar in form to that of a saddle reef. Gold-quartz lodes in the Preservation Inlet goldfield are comparable in geometry and host rock to their offset equivalents in the Golden Blocks field of NW Nelson.

Since Sept. 11, 2001, the author has been asked by several mining companies and mining publications to share some of his insights on how the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center (WTC) and Pentagon might affect the mining industry globally. Until now, the author has been reluctant to express his thoughts in a publication that could possibly fall into the hands of terrorists and give them some ideas that they may not have been previously considering. However, the author discussed the contents of this article with several friends and acquaintances in the international intelligence community. They said that nothing commented on here is new to the terrorists. Potential terrorist targets Sources within the worldwide intelligence gathering community have told the author that current intelligence data indicates that it is likely that the Islamic fundamentalist groups responsible for the attacks on Sept. 11, 2001will likely be directing their effort at foreign business entities. Any overseas or any domestic businesses of highly visible companies that are part of the anti-terrorism alliance should consider themselves a potential target.

At the start of the 20th century Denver?s population was 203,795. Most streets were unpaved. Buildings were constructed of wood frame or masonry. Transport was by horse-drawn-wagon or rail. Statewide, aggregate consumption was less than 0.25 metric tons per person per year. One hundred years later Denver had a population of 2,365,345. Today Denver is a major metropolitan area at the crossroads of two interstates, home to a new international airport, and in the process of expanding its light rail transit system. The skyline is punctuated with skyscrapers. The urban center is surrounded with edge cities. These changes required huge amounts of aggregate. Statewide, aggregate consumption increased 50 fold to over 13 metric tons per person per year. Denver has a large potential supply of aggregate, but sand and gravel quality decreases downstream from the mountain front and potential sources of crushed stone occur in areas prized for their scenic beauty. These issues, along with urban encroachment and citizen opposition, have complicated aggregate development and have paved a new path for future aggregate development including sustainable resource management and reclamation techniques.

This paper considers three aspects of cemented fill practice and research in Mount Isa. Firstly, an account is given of the use of Portland cemented hydraulic fill, considering mainly the role and specifications of the fill used but including û brief description of fill preparation and placement. Data resulting from a Portland cemented hydraulic fill sampling, curing and testing campaign covering about 18 months of operating practice are presented, analysed and discussed. These yield information indicating the mode of operation of a fully-automated fill preparation station, as well as a means of comparing field and laboratory strength results. A technique with potential for use as a fill quality control without actual strength testing is also described. Results of a fill research program conducted by the author in Mount Isa since early 1968 are presented, involving both Portland cemented hydraulic fill and alternative, cheaper, additives for cementing hydraulic fill.

Complete details are given of the drilling method by which two shafts were sunk at the new Beatm'x mine of Staatsmijnen in the Netherlands. The nature of the rock strata in the Dutch mining district determined choice of the drilling rather than the freezing method. Data for each step and details of the equipment used are given in the illustrations. Staatsmijnen was founded in 1902 with government financial backing, but it is run as a private enterprise, on a commercial basis, with the normal fiscal obligations. The company now has four mines in operation with annual outputs amounting to 7 1/2 million tons of coal. In 1952 it was determined that a new mine—the Beatrix—would be opened. Details of the shaft-sinking operation are described in this paper. SHAFT LOCATION The coal-bearing carboniferous rock in the Dutch mining district is overlain almost completely by soft water-bearing strata, which at the site of the new shafts are about 1600 ft thick. The sinking of the new shafts through this soft water-bearing overburden (Fig. 1) is a costly and time-consuming affair. From the two availaible sinking methods: 1) Poetsch's well known freezing method or 2) the drilling method of Honigmann-de Vooys, the latter was preferred, not only because of its relative cheapness, under the prevailing conditions, but primarily because by using the drilling process, a special type of shaft lining of steel, concrete, and bitumen could be used. The new shafts, located 330 ft apart, have an inner diameter of 18 ft, 4 1/2 in. The boreholes, which have a diameter of 25 ft and which were drilled through nearly 1600 ft of overburden and some 100 ft of carboniferous, each contain more than 29,000 cu yd—by far the largest in the world. DRILLING METHOD The drilling method is based on the use of mud-flush—a thin mixture of clay and water—to keep the borehole filled during the entire drilling period and during insertion of the lining (Fig. 2). All parameters influencing the decision for selection of a suitable extraction method were first selected as the base of this study. Then these parameters were categorized in two main groups. The first group of the parameters includes ?geomechanical and inherent characteristics of the dimension stones? such as hardness, RQD, compressive strength, joints plane orientation and spacing, and water content. The second group was named ?technical and economical parameters associated with the investor?s objectives? like for example extraction capacity (production rate), blocks recovery, mechanization, capital investment and operational costs. Finally, the influences of all mentioned parameters on the selection of the most applicable extraction methods have been assessed and discussed.

"Sediments in the vicinity of the hydrothermal seafloor massive sulphide (SMS) mounds are characterized by high concentration of metallic particles. They result from a long process of weathering of the primary mineral deposits and have been accumulated in depressions by mass wasting and hydrothermal plume fall-out. We present here the first results obtained on pore waters analyses of such sediments in distinct geological seafloor environments (in low-temperature hydrothermally active zones, on extinct hydrothermal mounds and in a remote depositional channel). Vertical concentration profiles suggest that the pore fluid composition is affected more by seawater circulation compared with hydrothermal fluid flow in all environments. The composition of pore fluids is affected by diagenesis and redox processes in the distal depositional channel where Mn2+ is released at depth with Cu2+.IntroductionMarine hydrothermal fields, hosting seafloor massive sulphides, are potential resources for future deep-sea mining and might become economic reserves for the industries. They are widespread at mid-oceanic ridges, arcs and back-arc spreading centers (Hannington et al., 2011; German et al., 2016). Sediments in the vicinity of these fields can contain unusually high concentration of Fe, Mn, Zn and Cu among other metal elements (Shearme et al., 1983). These hydrothermal, or metalliferous, sediments result from a combination of processes such as collapsing and weathering of chimney material, filling of the channels by turbidite-like mass wasting, in situ authigenic mineralization and hydrothermal plume fall-out (Goulding et al., 1998; German et al., 1990). The sediments contain important indicators reflecting the development of the hydrothermal systems. Because of their widespread distribution and metal content, they themselves can be considered potential mineral resources. Circulation of seawater through these deposits, however, often modifies the sediment composition by oxidizing the sulphides into oxyhydroxides and clays causing mobilization of the metals. To address the importance of alteration and diagenesis of these hydrothermal sediments, including the result of seawater circulation, we investigated the post-depositional processes occurring in the hydrothermal sediments at the TAG Hydrothermal Field (Mid-Atlantic Ridge, 26°N), focusing on the mobility of metallic cations in a number of different seafloor environments."

The Bureau of Mines has sought clarification of the Ti-TiN system by studying the phases formed by diffusion reactions between titanium and titanium nitride. Reaction couples were prepared by embedding pockets of TiN powder in arc-melted buttons of titanium. Specimens were vacuum annealed at nominal temperatures of 800°, 950°, 1,200°, and 1,500° C. Metallographically mounted cross sections from reacted specimens and from some that were not annealed were examined optically, with an electron microprobe, with an election microscope, and by X-ray diffraction. Each annealed specimen contained a segregated core primarily of d-phase material, an ?-phase diffusion layer, an a-phase diffusion layer, and host metal. On the basis of corresponding microprobe analyses, and considering results of certain other research, a new phase diagram is proposed. It contains no qualitative innovations, only quantitative adjustments. Results were also analyzed from the viewpoint of diffusion behavior. Diffusion coefficients calculated for the ? phase were sufficiently scattered that the parameters are very tentative. Nevertheless, the diffusion behavior reported is in reasonable agreement with one of two prior studies if it is assumed that the earlier investigators were mistaken in their identification of the nitride phase in which the diffusion occurred.

Prolonged laboratory and limited pilot plant tests have shown that the Bureau of Mines buffered S02 -H2S process is capable of removing 95 to 99 percent of the S02 from industrial waste gases. Most of the S02 is converted to elemental sulfur; only about I percent converted to sulfate The process comprises (1) washing the flue gas to remove particulates and S03, (2) absorption of the S02 in citric acid or other carboxylate solution, (3) reaction of the loaded solution with H2S in a closed vessel to precipitate the absorbed S02 as elemental sulfur, and (4) separation of the sulfur from the regenerated solution by oil flotation and melting. Two-thirds of the molten sulfur is converted to H2S for use in the sulfur precipitation step by reacting sulfur vapor with natural gas and steam in the presence of an alumina catalyst. The chemistry and mechanism of the process are described, initial laboratory and pilot plant data are summarized, and second-generation laboratory operation and pilot plant design are reviewed. Preliminary cost estimates are presented for recovering sulfur from copper smelter gas, powerplant flue gas, and Claus plant tail gas.

Chalcopyrite concentrate was combusted in oxygen-nitrogen atmospheres, the composition of which ranged from 1-100 per cent oxygen. Factors studied included particle size, experimental temperature and oxygen concentration. The study was assisted by chemical and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis and temperature measurements of single particles. Size reduction occurring after melting was found to have a major effect on the overall reaction time. Thus time to attain ignition was largely determined by the original particle size, whereas combustion time was independent of this factor. For particles larger than 40 I'm in air the time to attain ignition predominated. The maximum temperatures measured for single particles were the result of pyrite present in the concentrate. Chalcopyrite did not attain thesame temperatures. Vaporization, either as CU(g) or CuO(g) lImited the temperature. Maximum temperatures measured for single particles of pyrite ranged from 1610°C in 14 per cent oxygen to 2360°C in 100 per cent oxygen (both at 700°C). Measured temperatures were compared with those calculated from a diffusion-based model.

An alum/sulfur deposit (USDA organic registered) was mined underground for alunite (K,Na) Al3 (SO4)2 (OH)6 from the early 1900s to the 1930s. It is now being mined as an open pit quarry. A larger assemblage of minerals is included with this method (Alunite, Potassium?Alum, Jarosite, Gypsum, Native Sulfur and K-feldspar). This assemblage of minerals provides the necessary requirements as a Volcanic Soil Conditioner Sulfur-Potash. Heart of Nature? Company has been marketing this product to farmers on the west coast as a (1) pH reducer, (2) soluble sulfur and potassium source for plant growth and (3) soluble calcium. Recently, a new market has been tapped. This product has been found to solve many odor, bacteria and algae problems faced in the dairy industry.

Paper written on project work carried out in partial fulfilment of B.Sc. (Eng.) (Metallurgy and Materials) degree Corrosion in exhaust systems can occur on both the interior and exterior surfaces. Chloride-containing de-icing salts on the roads in colder countries greatly increases the rate of corrosion on the exterior surfaces. This paper investigates the relative exterior corrosion resistance of three alloys?two ferritic stainless steels( AISI Types 409 and 441) and an aluminized mild steel. The exhaust system is split into two categories?the hot end and the cold end. A test for each of these ends was designed?the standard ASTM G85test was modified to create a simulated driving cycle. The cold end test samples were exposed to ten driving cycles, and the hot end test samples were exposed to five driving cycles. A driving cycle constitutes the car being started from cold, driven until the operating temperatures are reached, and switched off and allowed to cool. Pitting corrosion is the primary corrosion mechanism occurring at the cold end of the exhaust system. The aluminized mild steel was the most resistant alloy in this test, and Type 409 the least. However, once the protective aluminium layer degrades, corrosion will occur rapidly. At the hot end of the exhaust system, spalling of the surface oxide layer is the primary corrosion mechanism occurring. Type 441 was the most resistant in this test, and the aluminized mild steel the least resistant. Potentiodynamic tests were performed on the alloys?the results agreed with the results obtained in the exposure tests.

Safe and efficient coal extraction requires advanced radar subsystems that can be mounted on cutting drums of coal cutting machines. A look-ahead radar (LAR) must solve the radio geophysics problem of transmitting an electromagnetic (EM) wave through at least 20 feet (6.1 meters) of coal to an air- or water-filled void. The reflected EM wave must be processed in the radar electronics to determine the physical distance to the void. Horizon sensing enables selective cutting near the undulating sedimentary rock boundaries of the coal bed to address coal quality and ground control issues. Both sensors require subsystems for dynamic electric power generation, real-time measurement of drum rotation angle, detection of reflected EM waves, and processing to determine distance through coal and RF modem transmission of measured data to the mining machine. This paper describes the development of the subsystems and field test results.

The study of gas emitted from face coal samples at the coal face is part of an investigation of instantaneous outbursts of coal and gas. Normally, seam gas essentially comprises methane of which the origin in the metamorphism of coal is undoubted. The origin of other gases sometimes occurring in high proportion in seam gas, particularly carbon dioxide, is more controversial. A simple meter for rapidly assessing gas in coal was developed. Tests with the meter enabled comparisons of seam gas in face coal at some outbursting and nonoutbursting mines, and under various working conditions. The varying results of widespread testing suggest certain trends, including some prospect of recognising outbursting potential at the coal face.INTRODUCTIONThe aim of this work is identification of differences in gas condition between coals subject to instantaneous outbursts and coals which have not outburst, and between faces of coals which will and which will not subsequently outburst. Any comparative test should be conducted right at the coal face on coal about to be worked and the results of testing should be available after a short period. Moreover, the method and the comparison of results should require no special skill, and be well within the capacity of junior mine officials. Any consistent relation between gas condition and subsequent mining conditions - outbursting or not might be valuable in prediction of outbursts.INSTANTANEOUS OUTBURSTSInstantaneous outbursts (Hargraves, 1958) , are largely unpredictable and unaccountable ejections of coal (up to 5,000 tons) and gas (up to 5,000,000 cu.ft.) from a standing coal face. THE oxidized ores of the Chief Consolidated Mining Co., in the Tintic mining district, have never yielded to metallurgical treatment by any standard method except smelting. These ores occur in comparatively small, irregular, siliceous replacements in limestone, and carry silver, lead, and gold as the principal valuable metals. But smelting methods. are unsatisfactory, as the lead smelters heavily penalize the large amount of silica in the ore, and the copper smelters do not pay for the lead in the ore; therefore, an alternative treatment method was sought. In 1916, a metallurgical research department was organized under; the direction of the writer. Many standard metallurgical methods were investigated but, on oxidized ore, none yielded extraction great enough to make its use feasible. During some chloridizing-roasting experiments in 1916, made in an assay muffle, the writer noted that large proportions of the silver, lead, and gold were volatilized from certain oxidized ores. The possibility of volatilizing the metals and collecting them in the form of a concentrated fume was then studied. But, as it was shown that satisfactory chloride-volatilization would be limited to a furnace feed with a high fusing temperature of the non-volatilizable constituents, and as the results obtained in a rotary kiln with the admixture of common salt with the ground ore were inferior to muffle tests, further volatilization experiments were discontinued until 1920. During this interval, an experimental sulfidizing and flotation plant was operated. After the cessation of attempts to float the oxidized minerals, chloride-volatilization experiments were resumed. The highly infusible flotation. tailing from the operation of the flotation mill was used for furnace feed. The first tests made on flotation tailing mixed with 10 per cent. common salt showed -nearly complete lead and gold volatilization but considerably less volatilization of silver than in muffle tests. In attempts to increase the silver extraction, the percentage salt in the furnace feed was varied, and it soon became apparent that the use of smaller percentages of salt raised the fusion temperature of the furnace charge and thus,

Methane (CH4) present in coal seams, generally known as Coalbed Methane (CBM), Coal Mine Methane (CMM) or Coal Seam Gas (CSG), is a major energy source, as it is the primary constituent of natural gas. At the same time, released methane is a potent greenhouse gas (GHG) and a major safety hazard in underground mining operations. Therefore, a considerable effort has been undertaken to develop coal bed methane extraction and utilization technologies that can achieve both environmental and safety benefits. Countries with significant coal reserves and gassy seams, i.e., USA, Australia, Canada, China, India, Poland and Germany have developed mature methodologies and practices to extract, before and during mining, and utilize significant amounts of methane from coal seams. Nevertheless, on a global scale, methane recovery remains untested and many technical and economic challenges require urgent attention. The research presented in this paper, sponsored by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), is focused on the Zonguldak Basin, the only hard coal region in Turkey. The basin is known to contain very gassy coal seams and consists of three major regions: Armutcuk, Zonguldak and Amasra. Among the three, the Amasra coalfield is considered as the most favorable for CBM recovery, as it comprises of deeper coal seams and where a private company, Hema Enerji A.S. (Hema) is already developing coalbed methane production facilities. This study aims at developing a reservoir model to predict the potential CBM recovery from the CBM-2 well, the only producing CBM well drilled by HEMA Enerji A.S in the Amasra coalfield. History matching was utilized to model the 15-day production data and uncertainty analysis was performed to estimate the optimum values for the reservoir parameters. The produced model yielded an average production rate of 143 m3/day for 10 years. The total amount of CH4 to be produced during this period was 0.53 million m3. Furthermore, the total amount of GHG to be avoided was estimated at 6585 tCO2e.

Heavy structures in central Cleveland, Ohio, are supported on raft foundations, driven piles, or caissons. Settlements can be predicted and structures are designed to accommodate such settlements. On one project the settlements were not provided for in the design of the structure. Soils are sands, silts, and varved clays to shale. A rift in a central area is 600 feet deep. Solutions to problems, and results, are detailed.

Dans ses opérations de traitement de concentré de zinc, l?usine de Zinc Électrolytique du Canada à Valleyfield génère un résidu minier appelé « jarosite ». Jusqu?en 1998, le jarosite était transporté hydrauliquement dans des bassins construits en argile. Le jarosite sédimenté possède une consistance très molle (impossible de circuler à pied sur le résidu consolidé) avec une eau interstitielle acide contenant des teneurs élevées en métaux. Ces caractéristiques particulières au jarosite rendaient très coûteuses la construction et la fermeture des bassins de résidus. En 1998, Zinc Électrolytique du Canada a implanté un nouveau procédé, développé chez Noranda, dont le principal objectif était de stabiliser chimiquement et physiquement le jarosite. Un nouveau concept de déposition a été élaboré pour le nouveau résidu minier appelé « jarofix ». Les grandes caractéristiques du nouveau procédé et du concept de déposition sont : ? Le jarosite est lavé et déshydraté à l?usine avec un système de filtre; ? De la chaux, du ciment et de l?eau sont ajoutés pour former le jarofix; ? Le jarofix est transporté par camions jusqu?à l?aire d?accumulation; ? À l?aire d?accumulation, le résidu est géré selon un concept d?empilement. L?élaboration du concept d?empilement et de l?aire d?accumulation devait tenir compte des caractéristiques de déposition du jarofix, de sa résistance à l?érosion hydrique et éolienne, de la gestion de l?eau de ruissellement, de la faisabilité de construire les digues de ceinture en utilisant du jarofix durci et de la nécessité de restaurer progressivement l?aire d?accumulation. Le déchargement du jarofix se fait à partir d?une rampe qui progresse avec une pente ascendante pour développer un front de déversement de plus en plus haut. La hauteur du tas de jarofix atteindra 30 m au centre du site. L?aménagement initial de 1998 a inclut une digue d?amorce de 3 m de hauteur, une rampe de déversement de 8 m de hauteur et un bassin pour la gestion de l?eau de ruissellement. Les propriétés du jarofix consolidé dans l?aire d?accumulation sont déterminées annuellement. Le jarofix durci possède la consistance et la résistance d?une argile très raide. Sa conductivité hydraulique est similaire à celle d?un silt et il résiste bien à l?érosion éolienne. Après trois années de déposition, la température du jarofix au milieu du dépôt demeure élevée. Le jarofix durci est facile à excaver et à compacter, ce qui en fait un excellent matériau pour la construction des digues de ceinture en périphérie du site.

The Crandall Canyon accident investigation included an interesting and unexplained observation by rescuers that the ?barrier rib had shifted northward as a unit, as much as 10 feet.? This is not the first mention of such a movement, although such reports are rare. Historical accounts describe unusual movement and displacement of intact coal, cribs and timbers. Two movements of particular interest are the creation of gaps above coal pillars and falling of standing support elements without apparent damage. A dynamic boundary element program was used to explore movements induced by slip on geologic features removed from the affected panel. While the resulting models are much too simple to fully replicate these observations, they do show that the types of phenomena observed are possible.
