"Gold bearing deposits of the Witwatersrand basin are generally less than 2m thick and require conventional narrow-reef mining methods for extraction and employ explosives as a means of rock breaking. Optimal utilization of explosives is dependent on the overall design of the blast. The under-utilization of explosives arises when shot-holes are drilled inconsistently, overcharged, and when tamping is absent. This can be rectified by emphasizing the importance of good drilling practices as part of induction programmes and refresher courses. The project was aimed at determining whether or not explosives are being optimally utilized at project site. This was investigated through a study of the properties of explosives, mine standards, and recommendations for usage. Underground observations were made to determine whether or not mine standards were being adhered to. Historic data was obtained to establish the historic relationship existing between the quantity of explosives used (kg) and the production output (m2). This was then compared to the quantity of explosives the mine expects to use per unit of production. The results obtained were analysed to determine the presence and extent of over- or under-utilization. It was found that explosives are being under-utilized at the mine. More explosives are ordered than expected per unit of production. The explosives’ properties are not thoroughly exploited during blasting, thereby requiring the use of more explosives than prescribed. "Platinum Group Metals (PGMs) used as catalyst which reduces toxic substances in emission gas exhausted from an automobile should extensively be recycled because they are rare metals produced only at the limited regions. The recycling process is to smelt an alumina honeycomb, in which PGM is built, in molten iron with flux such as lime and silica to separate them. PGMs are concentrated in molten iron while alumina in slag.The objective of this study is to understand the factor to concentrate PGMs in liquid iron as much as possible. Fundamental research of the distribution of the PGMs between the slag and liquid iron was carried out to recover the value metals of platinum, palladium and rhodium from the three-way auto catalyst. The distribution ratios of platinum, palladium and rhodium between the Al2O3-CaO-SiO2 slag and liquid iron are from 10-6 to 10-5, and these are concentrated in comparison with slag phase by about 1 million times to the liquid iron at 1873 K. The distribution ratios of platinum between the FexO-CaO-SiO2 slag and liquid iron decrease from 0.1 to 2?10-4 with increasing the CaO content in the slag. The CaO addition to the FexO unary slag is effective in concentrating platinum in molten iron.Based on the distribution ratios obtained in this work, recovery of PGMs was determined. The recovery of platinum, palladium and rhodium increase with increasing the mass ratio, Mmetal/Mslag. In the case of the conditions of Mmetal/Mslag = 0.04, the recoveries of PGMs showed more than 99.97%. The use of liquid iron and carbon saturated liquid iron as the collector metal is advantageous for the PGM recycling of the three-way auto catalyst. We found that PGMs are enriched to the molten iron or the carbon saturated iron and the slag loss of PGMs is negligible small."

The Geological Resource Map of New Zealand (GERM) is a computerised inventory of aggregate, mineral, coal, petroleum and thermal water occurrences, containing summary information on location, production, geology, and geochemistry. The types of occurrences include quarries, mines, gold dredges, wells, outcrops, seeps, springs, and fields. The file contains entries for about 10,300 sites and is used to produce tables of data and maps at any scale, for single or multiple commodities. The published format is the New Zealand 'Geological Survey map series Geological Resource Map of New Zealand 1:250 000'. Seventeen of the 27 map sheets covering New Zealand were published by August 1991, with three more close to publication.

Our opinion is that the current lack of R&D investment and implementation capacity places Canada at risk as a future global mining leader A white elephant A burdensome possession; creating more trouble than it is worth. White (albino) elephants were regarded as holy in ancient times in Thailand and other Asian countries. Keeping a white elephant was a very expensive undertaking, since the owner had to provide the elephant with special food and provide access for people who wanted to worship it. If a Thai King became dissatisfied with a subordinate, he would give him a white elephant. The gift would, in most cases, ruin the recipient.

As part of the I-94 North-South Corridor reconstruction program, the Wisconsin Department of Transportation (department) is reconstructing the Mitchell Interchange in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Located on the south side of Milwaukee near Mitchell International Airport, The Mitchell Interchange interconnects I-94, I-43 and I-894. Reconstruction began in 2009 with the letting of the first advance contract for local crossroad bridge reconstruction. A second advance contract for construction of collector-distributer roads on each side of the I-94 mainline was completed in 2010. The main contract involving reconstruction of the core of the Mitchell Interchange was let in the summer of 2010, and is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2012. The core contract includes construction of three cut and cover tunnels along two system interchange ramps. Construction of the three tunnel structures is on the critical construction path. The contract includes an interim contract completion date that requires the tunnels to be open to traffic by the end of 2011. A top down method of construction using drilled shaft secant piles for the sidewalls of the cut and cover tunnel structures was selected as the preferred structure type to address subsurface and construction schedule challenges. The department identified in pre bid coordination that no cost reduction incentives would be reviewed or accepted for changes in tunnel wall type. A major component of the tunnel structures requires the installation of 1,500, 4-foot diameter secant piles. This paper presents mitigation strategies to manage construction risks associated with the installation of the secant piles including; prequalification of the secant pile subcontractors, requirement for use of full depth temporary casing, a site specific quality control plan, specifying drilling equipment, and developing a geotechnical baseline report for this critical component of the Mitchell Interchange reconstruction project.

Introduction The impact of the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act, or Superfund, as well as the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) and their state counterparts underscore the intention of the nation's lawmakers to reduce the risk from hazardous substance to American society. The promises and requirements embodied in these laws, together with their prospects for liability, will continue to have a very substantial impact on decision making in the mining industry. These laws present the prospects for staggering liabilities, often of an unquantifiable nature in terms of time and amount. It is therefore necessary to keep them in clear focus. This is particularly true in light of President Reagan's signing into law the Superfund amendments on Oct. 17, 1986, and in light of the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) major policy pronouncement of July 3, 1986, regarding solid wastes from extraction of ores and minerals. This article examines the general trends as well as the specific provisions of these laws in an effort to assess the prospects of liability for the mining industry of releases of hazardous substances into the environment. Hazardous substances vs. hazardous wastes The distinction between the terms "hazardous substances" and "hazardous wastes" is important to appreciate for the purposes of assessing the potential for liability for a mining operation. Hazardous substance is a term that appears in and is defined in the Superfund Act. In Superfund, it is defined by reference to other substances that have been declared to be hazardous under other federal environmental statutes, such as RCRA, the Clean Air Act, and the Clean Water Act. Hazardous waste is a term that is less all-encompassing than hazardous substance, as that term is defined by RCRA. Hazardous substances do not need to be wastes to be considered hazardous for the purpose of Superfund liability. A "release" of a hazardous substance into the environment can bring about potential liability under Superfund. Many mining wastes, even though they are not considered hazardous wastes by EPA under RCRA, have been determined by that agency to be capable of bringing about liability under Superfund if they contain chemical substances, such as the heavy metals copper, lead, mercury, zinc, silver, and others. Therefore, it is not sufficient for the mining industry to be able to answer whether one has hazardous waste at a mining site. That question only goes partway in addressing the potential for liability. The next question is, do one's solid or liquid mining wastes contain hazardous substances that could bring about liability under Superfund? Superfund 1980 law: A review Some provisions of Superfund as it existed before its recent amendments must be considered. The law provides that the owners and operators of mining sites, together with those who transport hazardous substances to such sites, can be held jointly and severally liable for the cost of cleaning up the site. The concept of joint and several liability means that one party, as among many, can be held totally responsible for the costs of cleanup. The classic theory of pressure build-up in shut-in oil wells as developed by Horner and van Everdingen is based on two-dimensional radial symmetry in the well-reservoir system. Such symmetry does not exist in the case of a well which parfiially penetrates the producing formation. As a result of this lack of symmetry the use of the classic theory in such cases become questionable. In this paper the mathematical theory has been extended to include the case of partially penetrating wells. Numerical solutions illustrating the up-dication of the equations are presented. The effect of partial penetration on pressure build-up is shown by a comparison of synthetic pressure build-up curves derived from the numerical solution of the equation for partially penetrating wells for various degrees of penetration. It is shown that partial penetration is detectable from the characteristic shape of the pressure build-up curve and that formation productivity may be calculated from the pressure buildup data in a manner identical to that described by the classic theory. INTRO DUCTION The use of pressure build-up data on shut-in oil wells is a well-established technique for the measurement of reservoir productivity. The work of Homer' and van Everdingen' is well known. Since the publication of their pioneering work, others"' have elaborated and extended the technique. These authors have dealt exclusively with the case of wells that completely penetrate he producing formation. Two-dimensional radial symmetry is achieved, thereby, and the problem is greatly simplified. This ideal situation is seldom encountered in practice. But, in spite of this, the technique is often employed anyway. The question, therefore, arises: how much confidence can be placed in the results of such calculations when the data are taken on wells that only partially penetrate the producing formation? It is the purpose of this work to answer this question. Only the single-phase fluid case will be considered. van Everdigen' has presented a rigorous solution of the two-dimensional case, but because of mathematical complexity, this solution has not proved to be particularly useful. Horner' utilized Kelvin's point source solution in two dimensions and showed that it is a sufficiently good approximation for oil reservoir studies. The geometry of the well and the producing formation is illustrated in Fig. l. Geometrically the formation may be described as an infinite slab. In order to deliver a quality shotcrete and concrete product underground for the extensions to the Cullinan Diamond Mine operations it was decided to develop a new, simpler concrete product to meet underground support requirements. The aim was to develop a concrete product that not only reduced costs but also met the performance criteria of the current range of concrete products used on Cullinan Diamond Mine, a 25, 45 and 60 MPa concrete and a fibre reinforced wet shotcrete. The concrete product batching and delivery system was to be from surface as opposed to the current underground batching systems. The operational principle was to include an automated surface batching plant with delivery of the concrete product to a borehole containing suspended pipelines delivering to an underground storage facility from where the product is delivered to the working area by further pumping or agicars. Until ten years ago, the largest load tests on drilled shafts (bored piles) were about 3,000 tons (27MN). These tests were made with kentledge (large weights, usually concrete blocks) stacked up as a reaction to the applied downward load of a hydraulic jack. In some cases, the jack load is resisted by a load frame held down by piles or anchors connected to the frame. When the test loads exceed 3,000 tons (27MN), these methods become cumbersome expensive and time consuming. The Osterberg (O-cell) test method does not require any reaction load. It has become the only cost effective method for static load testing of high capacity shafts. Over 650 load tests have been performed with this method, 86 of which were over 3,000 tons (27 MN) and 40 over 5,000 tons (44 MN), and the largest test load was 17,000 tons (150 MN). Tests have been made on sands below the water table, shafts ending in rock sockets, and cemented sands and gravels. Test results and details for selected load tests are discussed.

Ore at the Congress gold property, located near Goldbridge, British Columbia, is extremely refractory with most of the gold disseminated in fine-grained arsenopyrite. Metallurgical testwork conducted by Giant Bay Biotech Inc. indicated that biooxidation pretreatment was capable of increasing cyanide gold recovery from the ore to greater than 90%. To determine if the bioleach process could be successfully scaled up, a 225m' (7950-cu ft) commercial size bioleach reactor was built and tested at the mine site in 1989. At that time, the tank was the largest bioleach reactor ever operated. The objectives of the program were: • to ascertain if the biooxidation rates obtained in lab and pilot-scale reactors could be duplicated in a commercial scale tank; • to identify agitation conditions under which the process will function optimally; and • to demonstrate the bioleach process on a scale sufficient to satisfy the owners and potential investors.

Flow rate into the thickener or clarifier a) As the flow rate increases into the thickener or clarifier ?retention time? decreases which causes a greater affect hydraulically on the settling solids. So as the flow rate increases it will generally mean an increase in flocculant dosing rate. b) As the flow rate decreases into the thickener or clarifier the retention time increases which reduces the hydraulic affect on settling, improving settling rates. This will generally mean that as the flow rate decreases, we will decrease the flocculant dose rate.

The Kell Process has been developed for the extraction of platinum group metals (PGMs) and base metals from sulphide flotation concentrates. The process has been successfully tested on several different sulphide flotation concentrates, including those from the UG2 chromitite horizon and the Platreef mafic/ultramafic layer. It has been shown to provide high (>95 per cent) and selective extraction efficiencies for the key valuable metals, i.e. Pt, Pd, Rh, Au, Ni, Co, and Cu. The Kell Process consists of several commercially proven unit operations. S, Ni, Co, and Cu are first selectively removed by use of a pressure oxidation step during which the dissolution of PGMs is minimized. The residue from pressure oxidation is subjected to a thermal treatment to ensure efficient PGM recovery by subsequent chlorination. All the core steps are very similar to well-proven conventional unit operations in common use, as are the subsequent metal recovery steps to provide marketable end products. Typical metallurgical responses of flotation concentrates from UG2 and Platreef to the Kell Process are provided, and key outcomes of an energy comparison study with smelting are summarized in this paper. Kell presents a potentially substantial improvement in PGM concentrate processing technology, in terms of economics via much-reduced power costs, ease of processing, and various environmental benefits. It allows for the treatment of high-chromium low-grade 'dirty' concentrates, such as secondary concentrates from the platinum industry's 'mill-float-mill-float' (MF2) flotation circuits and concentrates from retreatment of tailings. It allows greater concentrate mass pulls, has higher tolerance to gangue intergrowths in concentrates, and its use can provide substantial increases in overall PGM recovery. Its adoption would be a step change in the platinum industry, and given the commercially proven unit operations embodied in the Kell Process, at much-reduced risk compared with other more experimental technologies. Since the initial process development work, significant improvements and refinements have been introduced as a result of further compre¬hensive testing and process modelling. Pilot-scale testing and engineering study work is in progress for several selected sites.

Based on experience with secant CFA-pile walls in The Netherlands, requirements for this type of wall can be set with a risk management view to it. Quality assurance and quality control of drilled shafts has become a concern due to difficulties in accurately locating construction anomalies and determining load bearing capacity of defected drilled shafts. Various non-destructive evaluation techniques have been developed to estimate the integrity of the concrete in drilled shafts. While these techniques have been widely accepted, variables and unknowns can affect the measurement results. Results are typically difficult to interpret, leading to unnecessary construction delays and possible litigation over shaft integrity. In addition, influences of surrounding ground materials, stress states under different load conditions, and crack and residual stress development during concrete curing further complicate determination of shaft performance. This paper focuses on the evaluation of load bearing capacity of defected drilled shafts under various conditions by numerical analysis and modeling.

In recent times, there has been criticism of the minerals industry over the lack of quantifiable boundaries between inferred, indicated, and Measured resources. A recent initiative through the United Nations aims to try to converge the mineral resource classification systems. Since the oil and gas industry uses a probabilistic approach to defining reserve boundaries, it is appropriate to introduce a similar statistical methodology for minerals. The Venmyn Variance Tower has been developed based upon traditional statistics to utilize historical and ongoing information in order to quantify variance of geological and chemical parameters and the boundaries and logic for quantitative mineral resource classification. It is proposed that a less than 50% variance from the mean of all sample parameters is required to achieve the classification threshold to define an inferred Resource whereas between 20-10% is needed for an indicated Resource and less than 10% variance from the mean is needed to declare a Measured Resource. These limits are similar to those used by the oil and gas industry, and it is suggested that these thresholds be adopted as an industry standard to ensure consistent quantitative reporting. While this process is intended to use statistics of an orebody to provide quantifiable and defendable boundaries, it cannot be carried out unless the geology of the mineral deposit is understood and the borehole samples can be categorized into appropriate populations for which the statistics are valid. This means that competent geologists are always required to work with and understand the implications of the Variance Tower results. This paper is intended to form the basis of a series of publications that establish a process to take mineral projects along a quantifiable and logical development path. Hence, no specific field example of the practical application of this process is given here.

Wardrop Engineering and the Placer Dome?s Campbell Mine Design Team utilized leading edge directional raise boring techniques and an innovative, remote controlled application of steel fibre reinforced shotcrete ground support to achieve improved mine ventilation and a superior, safety focused secondary emergency egress. While more standardized methods may have provided a sufficient solution to either the requirement for a ventilation raise or for a traditional escape ladder way, innovative methodology ensured both objectives were met with a single, enhanced solution. Placer Dome committed to provide a solution that minimized energy consumption, optimized air delivery and facilitated an escape way focused on minimizing the negative physiological aspects associated with mine evacuation. The project was successful in providing a new airway, returning 47 m3/s (100,000 cfm) from the 39 Level to 30 Level, minimizing risk to the raise equipping crew and providing a fully equipped escape hoist. The resulting secure escape environment provided an efficient means of evacuating personnel working at depth without necessitating a potentially dangerous exhausting climb to surface. The project has substantiated, that optimized safety focused design can be achieved without jeopardizing project economics.

"A significant effort is expended on preparation of the capital estimate for feasibility studies. The development of the operating cost estimate is usually allocated a significantly smaller budget and less emphasis is placed on ensuring the accuracy of the operating cost. This paper presents a comparison of capital and operating costs of hydrometallurgy processing plants in order to demonstrate the importance that variations in operating costs have on the overall life-of-mine costs. The analysis is supported by a case study on the operating costs of a water treatment plant at an existing Australian hydrometallurgy facility at the feasibility design level. INTRODUCTIONDetermination of the economic validity of a minerals processing project is a critical outcome of a feasibility study. In many cases, the financial results of the feasibility study will determine if the project should proceed to execution. Ensuring that these results are reliable and built upon sound engineering practices allows companies to make informed decisions on resource opportunities and the selected technology.The methodology for developing a capital cost estimate at the feasibility level is well established. Specialist engineering estimators use budget quotations, first principle estimation and rules-of-thumb to develop an estimate with an accuracy of typically -10% to +15%. Cost reporting software packages are used to methodically build up the estimate from design information supplied by the engineering disciplines. Risk analysis and capital expense workshops are carried out to identify potential deficiencies in the estimate. It is widely recognized that in order to successfully produce a feasibility level capital estimate with an appropriate level of accuracy, a rigorous development process is necessary.The development of the operating cost estimate is typically less rigorous than the capital cost estimate. The operating cost is normally derived by the process engineering discipline and rarely are specialist estimators used to support the development. The allocated budget for producing an operating cost is usually smaller and less emphasis is placed on ensuring the accuracy and contingency reflect the most likely operating cost scenario."
