The extraction of Nb and Ta from a columbo-tantalite of San Luis, Argentina, is being studied by using a pressure reactor and HF as leaching agent. The reagents and products have been characterized by several techniques such as scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDXS), X-ray fluorescence (XRF), X-ray difracction (XRD), surface area (BET) and size particle analysis. Experimental results have shown that the extraction of niobium and tantalum increases with increasing temperature, reaction time and acid concentration. For particle size between +80 and -355 mesh no significant changes are detected. It is also slightly affected by the stimng speed. XRD analysis of the residues did not show formation of new crystalline structures.

Adsorption techniques are comparatively low cost and effective for treatment of arsenic contaminated drinking water. Various adsorbents such as alumina, ferrihydrite and manganese ores have been used, but there has been little investigation of modifying the structure of ferrihydrite to improve its adsorptive efficiency of As(III) and As(V). In the present study the incorporation of manganese oxide into the ferrihydrite structure was carried out and the prepared materials used in arsenic adsorption experiments. The compounds were X-ray amorphous, but TGA/DTA and FTIR analysis showed some structural characteristics. Sorption studies reported in this paper indicate the excellent arsenic removal properties of the manganese/iron compounds with a loading capacity of 0.3 mmol/g. Adsorption follows first order kinetics and the results fitted to adsorption and mass transfer models. Arsenic levels in water containing 1 mg/L As(V) were reduced by 50% in 20 minutes and 90% in 60 minutes using 1 g/L manganic ferric oxyhydroxide.

"In this paper, solidification process of steel ingot was simulated by ProCAST software, based on cellular automaton-finite element (CAFE) model. A 22 t steel ingot was divided into continuous small zones (100x150x180 mm) in radial direction, then the temperature field, shrinkage cavity and porosity, particularly, the microstructure were simulated. The results show that: there was a columnar-to-equiaxed transition in microstructure on radial direction. Zones, closing to the center of the ingot, had a more developed and fined equiaxed zone, while zones closing to the periphery of the ingot had a more developed columnar zone. It indicated that temperature gradient has a great influence on microstructural morphology. Thus, the simulation results were highly agree with the experimental results, verifying the feasibility of this simulation method. It significantly reduces the time of simulation, and has important significance for predicting the microstructure of large steel ingot.IntroductionSolidification microstructure of steel ingot have a significant effect on the quality of the final steel products. Although many experimental works have been carried out in order to obtain the optimum condition for solidification process of continuous casting, it is also very desirable to establish mathematical models to simulate the evolution of solidification structure. The simulation methods can be divided into deterministic models and stochastic models, which have been developed rapidly over the last couple of decades. Cellular automaton method is one of the stochastic models. Rappaz and Gandin [1, 2], Nasatac and Stefanescu [3, 4] are the earliest researchers engaged in the this field. Moreover, Rappaz and Gandin simulated the solidification structure and CET (columnar grain to equiaxed grain transition) of metals using the CAFE method (cellular automaton-finite element method) for the first time [1, 2]. Recently, the CA (cellular automaton) model also considered the effects of fluid flow on the solidification process. Zhu, et al. [5-11] improved method of CA , they used the KGT model to describe the undercooling needed during the growth of the dendrite tip."

"The concept of achieving a useful high-energy-product magnet through appropriate nanostructuring of known hard and soft phases has been tantalizing researchers since the idea was first proposed. The fabrication of exchange-coupled nanocomposite magnets faces several challenges including aligning the easy anisotropy axes of the hard-phase grains. Here we investigate experimentally two-phase nanostructures of hard Lio-ordered FePt and soft iron-rich/cc Fe(Pt). The Fe-Pt thin films were produced by epitaxial cosputtering onto MgO (001) single-crystal substrates which lead to strong (001) texturing. The measured hysteresis loops indicate nearly ideal exchange coupling. Excellent magnetic properties are obtained, with largest values of coercivity (51 kOe), saturation magnetization (1287 emu/ cm3, J, = 16.2 kG), and nominal maximum energy product (58 MGOe).1. IntroductionA key figure of merit for permanent magnets is the maximum energy product (BH)rrw.x. The achievable maximum energy product is determined by a magnet's saturation magnetization M, and its magnetic anisotropy. For example, it is well known that (BH)rrw.x :S 4n2M,2• In the past, record energy products have been the result of discovering new compounds with high values of magnetization and anisotropy. However, finding new compounds with better magnetic properties than the current record-holding magnet Nd2Fe14B has proven to be difficult. A different approach is to exploit the exchange coupling mechanism between known hard and soft magnetic phases to enhance the maximum energy product [1-5]. In such a composite system, high coercivity is achieved due to the anisotropy of the hard phase as well as a nanostructure which prohibits large-scale domain wall reversal mechanisms. Magnetization is enhanced by the soft phase and loop squareness results from texturing of the hard phase easy-axis as well as complete exchange coupling between the coexisting hard and soft grains."

An analytical program using a combination of SEM-based image analysis techniques is developed for automated modal analysis of ores containing silicate and other gangue minerals. Previous knowledge, gathered by means of either optical microscopy, X-ray diffraction, SEM, or electron microprobe analysis is used to establish discrimination criteria in the image analysis program. The program initially discriminates minerals on the basis of their relative grey values in a backscattered electron image. For those minerals which have overlapping grey levels the minerals are identified by the program using energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry with X-ray counting for twelve or more elements. This technique is useful to quantify ores in which the gangue minerals are numerous. Two cases of application are presented.

During foundry sand reclamation process development, molds formed from reclaimed chromite sand showed a rapid decline in tensile strength during thermal cycling tests. Because this characteristic could limit reuse of chromite sand in the. foundry, the sand was examined in detail Scanning electron microscopy, x-ray mapping, magnetic susceptibility, and x-ray diffraction were utilized to evaluate processed chromite sand. It was found that process variables such as binder composition, reclamation temperature, and processing method had a significant effect on the chromite sand particle surface. X-ray diffraction indicated a crystallographic change in the processed sands. Magnetic susceptibility also increased after processing. Diffusion of iron to the particle surface and increased surface roughness were identified as potential causes of the decreased tensile strength in the molds.

An EAF dust generated in a Swedish steel mill has been leached in hydrochloric acid at The solution obtained has been subjected to purification by cementation followed by precipitation of zinc with sodium carbonate. The thermal decomposition of the precipitate was studied using thermal analysis and X-ray diffraction. The results show that during the calcination of the precipitate three different reactions occur. The decomposition of the solid phases Zn5(CO3) (OH)6, CaZn(CO3)2 and CaCO3 occur completely at 370°C, 560°C and 940°C respectively, yielding a final product containing 61.9% ZnO and 38.1% CaO. Methods to minimize calcium and manganese in the final product are discussed.

"The contrastive studies of microwave and conventional roasting copper residue from zinc hydrometallurgical was carried. The experimental results showed that the microwave roasting has the higher dechlorination rate in the same condition such as temperature, heat preservation time and atmosphere. When the samples with 100 mesh grain size, the Cl content turned from 14.27% to 1.33% and the dechlorination rate achieved over 90% at 400°C with 2h microwave roasting. And in the same conditions, the materials' dechlorination rate after conventional roasting just reached around 78%. The phase changes of the roasting process was investigated with X-ray diffraction analysis.IntroductionCl element can be accumulated gradually in the solution of Zinc hydrometallurgical system. When Cl content in electrolysis solution comes up to 100 mg/L, the stability of electrodeposits process would be severely affected [ 1]. It would not only accelerate the consumption of cathode and anode plate, elevate the power consumption, but also cause serious corrosion of device, increase production costs and lower the quality of electrolytic zinc [2]. Thus, C1- contained in the solution should be removed before electrodeposits."

Examination of tensile bar surfaces shortly after destructive testing was conducted to search for clues that would aid in optimization of mechanical properties, especially tensile strength, yield strength and elongation to fracture. Cu-Ni-Si-Cr alloy bars in the as-cast, forged, rolled and extruded conditions were examined. Low ductility bars (<4% Elongation) showed dramatically different features than the fracture surfaces of high strength - high ductility bars (7 to 10% Elongation). Analysis of the fracture surfaces at 15X to 2000X and use of Energy-Dispersive X-Ray Spectroscopy (EDS) identified Ni-Si and Ni-Si-Cr precipitates of varying sizes and morphologies. Thermo-mechanical processing techniques to control the size and distribution of these precipitates show promise in improving the properties and performance of this alloy system and appear to correlate with improvements in the fracture surface morphology.

Silver from nitrate aqueous solutions was extracted by commercial organophosphorous extractants (tri-n-butylphosphate, Cyanex 471x, Cyanex 301 and Cyanex 302). Quantitative silver extraction was obtained using the Cyanex reagents. After loading, aqueous solutions of several reducing reagents were used to prepare fine silver powders by reductive stripping. Only both extractants Cyanex 471x and tri-n-butylphosphate (TBP) could be reductive stripped and regenerated by aqueous solutions of ascorbic acid, and Cyanex 471x was decomposed to the corresponding phosphine oxide by using sodium borohydride as reducing agent. Silver was recovered as fine particles, which were characterised by means of scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Micrographs showed that the powder size and morphology were directly affected by the composition of the applied organic phases and aqueous reducing media.

The 2003 redoubling in power to 68MW on the Polokwane Smelter furnace represented a significant intensification in platinum group metal (PGM) smelting. Combined with onerous ‘green’ PGM concentrate smelting requirements, this yielded conditions unusually corrosive to copper coolers and refractories. This presented unexpected operational and design challenges to reliable crucible operation and maintenance. Combined with specific operational control intervention, development of protective coatings has led to the life of water-cooled copper components improving from 9 to 40 months. The furnace matte endwall was extended in 2010 to address accelerated wear of refractories and the potential risk for contact of copper components by superheated matte. An 18 month planned endwall rebuild cycle has been demonstrated (versus catastrophic failure within 9 months). Finally, benefits including lower energy consumption, improved metal recoveries and higher productivity resulting from operational and in-house design developments will be described, that justify “Celebrating the Mega-scale” in PGM smelting.

Detailed mineralogical and metallurgical investigations were carried out on a phosphorous-bearing manganese carbonate ore from the Huayuan manganese mine, Hunan, China. Microprobe analyses indicate that the Manganese occurs mainly in calc-rhodochrosite and in rhodochrosite. The cOll&apos;pOsitional range of these manganese carbonate minerals is 50 -80 % MnOJ3, 0 -35 % CaOJ3, 5-35 % MgC03 and 0 -15 F~. The manganese carbonate minerals are very fine grained, IOOSt are between 4.6 and 9.4 1m in diameter. The small grains are clustered into aggregates that form bands 0.5 to 10 rnn wide. The phosphorous-bearing mineral in the ore is fluorapatite and is in grains that are generally smaller than 6 1m in diameter. Metallurgical tests show that it is possible to concentrate the aggregates of manganese carbonate minerals by high intensity magnetic separation, and to reduce the phosphorous content by rpasting the concentrate to convert the manganese carl::x>nates to insoluble hausmannite, and then leaching the roast product with HCI to dissolve the fluorapatite.

SHS (Self-propagating High-temperature Synthesis) is one of the important methods to synthesize B4C powders. The process contains the reaction of boron oxide powders (B2O3) with magnesium reducing agent and carbon black carburizer. SHS products are leached in HCl media to purify synthesized B4C powders in the following step. In the present study, effects of various functional additives (KClO3, KHSO4, MgSO4.7H2O, NaCl, MgO and Na2SO4) in the SHS stage were carried out. Various proportions of the additives were mixed with the initial SHS charge mixtures. Two different molar ratios were employed in the initial SHS mixtures as 1:3:0.8 B2O3:Mg:C and 1:2.5:0.8 B2O3:Mg:C. After the SHS step, HCl leaching process was applied to the SHS products. Filter cakes were dried and characterized by using X-Ray Diffraction Spectroscopy, BET and chemical analysis techniques.

External oxidation during in-line heat treatment of TRIP steels can cause problems for the subsequent coating process. This research aims to elucidate the kinetic rates of internal oxidation, external oxidation and decarburization and their interdependence under different gas atmospheres and temperatures. A rolled steel sample chemistry of 0.14 wt.% C, 1.8 wt% Mn, 0.6 wt.% Si and 1 wt.% Al is used as a case study. Thermogravimetric techniques are used to examine the net mass change in a sample during heat treatment and the results show an initial mass decrease and later an increase for particular partial pressures of H2O. SEM-EDS, optical microscopy and glancing-angle x-ray are used to quantify the microstructure. The cross-section of the samples have 4 distinct zones: (i) an external scale, rich in fayalite, (ii) an internally oxidized region with Al, Si and Mn oxides in an Fe matrix, (iii) a decarburized steel region, characterized by large ferrite grains and low carbon content, and (iv) a relatively unaffected steel core with a structure similar to the starting material.

Based on Thermogravimetric and Differential thermal analysis (TGA-DTA), porous copper powder is prepared by thermal decomposition of complicated copper oxalate. The effects of various conditions on the morphology, crystalline grain size and specific surface area of copper powder were investigated, including temperature, duration, mixing ratio of nitrogen and hydrogen. Furthermore, composition and morphologies of the products were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Scanning electron microscope (SEM) and BET adsorption isotherm. It is found that porous copper powder was produced under optimum conditions. The specific surface area is over 6.74 m2?g-1, and average pore size in particles is about 30.3 nm. After comparison of SEM images, the final product Cu well inherits the morphology of the precursor, thus a mechanism of in-situ decomposition is proposed.

The thermal decomposition studies of two zinc basic carbonate samples were carried out up to 400 "C by thermogravimetric analysis, boat experiments and differential scanning calorimetry measurements &apos;DSC&apos;. The initial samples and the solid decomposition products were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy, x-ray diffraction and laser particle size analyzer. The thermal decomposition of both samples started at about 150 "C and the rate of decomposition became significant at temperatures higher than 200 "C. The apparent activation energies &apos;Ea&apos; in the temperature range 150-240 "C for sample decomposition were between 132 and 153 kJ1mole depending on the sample origin. The XRD analyses of the intermediately decomposed samples and the DSC results up to 400 "C suggest that the decomposition reaction probably occur in a single step.

In order to seek an effective extraction process for vanadium, the recovery of vanadium from a high Ca/V ratio vanadium slag was studied by sodium roasting and ammonia leaching. In the present paper, the oxidation and leaching process of vanadium slag was investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry (SEM/EDS) techniques. The effects of ammonium carbonate concentration, leaching temperature and leaching time on the leaching ratio of vanadium were discussed. As indicated in the experimental result, the optimal (NH4)2CO3 concentration was 120g/L, leaching temperature was 60°C and leaching time was 20 min. Approximately 92% of the vanadium was recovered under the optimal conditions. Furthermore, by means of X-ray diffraction analysis, the phase transformations of the vanadium slag during roasting and leaching processes were analyzed and discussed.

The world’s first large scale modular solvent extraction plants have been delivered by Outotec. The first of these is now in operation and has proven that the VSF®X technology can deliver the excellent performance of the Outotec VSF® solvent extraction process. Modular delivery allows site work to be minimized and the manufacturing done in a controlled environment, allowing for serial production manufacturing benefits. Container based delivery was found to be a highly efficient way of utilizing the standardized transportation methods on a global scale. Site work with modular units was found to be efficient and highly predictable. In this paper, we present the first successful Outotec VSF®X deliveries and discuss the benefits of the modular delivery and design compared to the standard solvent extraction installation’s delivery. The process performance of the VSF®X is also discussed with experiences from the first industrial reference presented.

Long term stability studies were conducted on four variants of LaNi5; 10,000 hydriding/dehydriding cycles were used to evaluate their suitability for a metal hydride cooling system. Thermodynamic and structural studies were conducted to determine changes in these materials during cycling test period. The hydrogen sorption properties of LaNi5.2, and Lao 9Gd0.1Ni5 and LaNi4.75In0.27 were seriously degraded during the tests but the LaNi4.8Sn0.22 hydride was virtually unaffected. Hydride isotherms were measured at the beginning and at intervals through out the test period to observe the nature and extent of damage degradation in the sorption properties. X-ray diffraction studies of the alloys (LaNi5.2, LaO.9Gd0.1Ni5 LaNi4 8Sn0.22) and their respective hydride, before and after test, provided insight with regards to the observed changes in the hydride properties. Electron microscopic studies were also conducted to evaluate the changes in particle sizes.
