"In copper plating processes, a fraction of raw materials are incorporated to the final products, while other portions are discarded as effluents. In this study, the application of electrodialysis (a membrane treatment process) was studied for treatment of wastewaters from cyanide-free strike baths, in order to reuse the components of this bath: copper and HEDP. The synthetic solutions studied consider 1 % of ion concentration of the bath used in this process, simulating the rinsing waters to be discarded. The electrodialysis allowed a percentage extraction up to 73% of copper ions and 72% of HEDP from the effluent. Complexes formation between the acid and copper indicates the possibility of recovery of components in the same compartment, obtaining a concentrated solution of these substances that can be reinserted in the process, for compensating drag-out losses. A diluted solution is also obtained, that can be reused as water in rinsing tanks.IntroductionIn metal finishing industries, contaminants in wastewater and the type of treatment required are determined according to the type of operation [l]. Generally, electroplating industries employ conventional wastewater treatments, e.g. oxidation of cyanide and chemical precipitation. This stage promotes reactions with soluble compounds to produce an insoluble precipitate, removed by physical separation. The sludge is dried by press-type filters [2].In this manufacturing sector, part of the raw materials are discarded as hazardous waste. The cost of discarded compounds and the treatment and disposal of waste may compromise profit margins. In addition, water consumption per unit of production stimulates the development of methods able to recover and reuse the largest possible amount of water [3].In some plating processes, cyanide-based substances are used as complexing agents and as raw materials in form of metal salts [4]. However, the toxicity associated with cyanide has been promoting research for the development of new raw materials in plating processes.A study conducted in Brazil [4] evaluated the modification of a commercial cyanide-free bath for processes of copper coating on Zamak. In the performed study, a new alkaline copper bath was formulated using l,hydroxyethane-1,1-diphosphonic acid (HEDP), an organic compound known for forming stable complexes with metal ions.As results of the study, the operational conditions and the formulation of a bath to obtain adherent, uniform and bright layers were established (Table I) [4]."

In this work is presented SEX (Structural & Elemental X-Ray Instrument), the first spectrometer completely portable which make non-destructive X-ray fluorescence and diffraction analysis, in contemporary and in real time. This instrument has been realized using miniaturized detectors, the same model installed on the mission Pathfinder NASA, and X-ray microtubes. SEX allows the chemical and mineplogical characterization of all kind of solid materials and allows to make chemical stratigraphy and liquids analysis.

"Limestone and burnt magnesite were added to vary MgO content and basicity (CaO/SiO2 ratio) of pellets for investigating their influences on the properties of specularite pellets. At fixed MgO content, the addition of limestone does not affect on the properties of green balls significantly. The addition of burnt magnesite has obvious influence on the quality of green balls, especially on the thermal shock temperature. Without burnt magnesite, the thermal shock temperatures are about 400°C, and, the thermal shock temperature increases to 600~630°C by adding burnt magnesite. For preheated pellets, when the burnt magnesite is added, the compressive strength will be decreased. For roasted pellets without burnt magnesite, the calcium additives can form binding phase of calcium-ferrite, and suitable liquid phase will improve recrystallization of hematite, but excessive liquid will destroy the structure of pellets, so the compressive strength of pellet increases firstly and then decreases. When adding burnt magnesite, the compressive strength will increase as the basicity increases. When the basicity is more than 0.2, the compressive strength of the pellets various MgO content and basicity is above 2500N/pellet and then MgO-bearing fluxes can be added to prepare pellets with good high temperature properties.IntroductionWith the rapid development of the steel industry in China, oxidized pellets, possessing good mechanical and metallurgical properties, are becoming indispensable burdens for blast furnace ironmaking [1-3]. However, this has resulted in the shortage of domestic iron concentrates, so many Chinese steel plants begin to use imported hematite concentrate to prepare pellets. Compared with magnetite pellets, the hematite pellets require high roasting temperature and narrow roasting temperature range (1300–1350°C) and possess low compressive strength [4,5].1"

"The techniques able to incorporate wastes by means of a heat treatment present the advantage to fix the residue with chemical bonds. Among these techniques there are vitrification and sintering which are characterised by different operating temperatures in the range of 950-1500°C and the involved raw materials develop silicatic crystalline phases and glassy matrices capable to immobilize heavy metal contents in the waste matrix. In this work incinerator bottom ash, polishing and glazing ceramic sludges have undergone to thermal treatments in order to valorise the waste as secondary raw material for the obtainment of re-products. The chemical efficiency of the process adopted has been evaluated by comparing the results of release tests applied to the as-received wastes and to the thermally treated materials in order to verify the effectiveness of the different matrices to fix the waste components.IntroductionVitrification is one of the most promising technological options for the treatment of some kinds of waste. The high temperature involved in the process (1200-1500°C) leads to the complete destruction of organic pollutants, such as dioxins, and glassy network formed can incorporate heavy metals. Some vitrification processes naturally occur: glasses produced by volcanic eruptions, such as obsidians (Na2O-K2O-Al2O3-SiO2) and basaltic (CaO-MgO-Al2O3-SiO2) rocks, are basically inert materials even when they contain toxic elements, because these are embedded in an extremely stable glassy matrix. The disadvantage of vitrification is that it is an energy-intensive process involving relatively high costs, therefore its use is better justified if a high-quality product with optimised properties can be fabricated. The most effective way to improve the properties of the vitrified material is the transformation into glass ceramic. This is a fine-grained polycrystalline material (typically from 50% to 98% of the volume may be crystalline) formed when a glass of suitable composition is heat treated and hence undergone to controlled crystallisation (phenomenon named devitrification). The three key variables in the design of a glass-ceramic are: glass composition which controls glass viscosity related to the effectiveness of nucleation and rapidity of crystallisation; glass-ceramic phase assemblage (that is, the types of crystals and the proportion of crystals to glass) which is responsible for many of the physical and chemical properties; nature of the crystalline microstructure (crystal size and morphology and the textural relationship among the crystals and glass) which is the key to many mechanical and optical properties. In particular, a partly crystalline material can be obtained by powder sintering."

An Early Proterozoic orogenic terrane of metasedimentary and metaigneous rocks underlies Nebraska, Kansas, and Missouri. Middle Proterozoic epizonal terranes of anorogenic granite and rhyolite, a known metallogenic province partly exposed in southeastern Missouri, overlap the orogenic terrane on the south. These Proterozoic terranes, covered by less than 1,000 meters of Phanerozoic strata, contain a virtually untapped source of mineral wealth and are one of the last frontiers for geologic exploration in the continen-tal United States. Petrographic study of subsurface samples is a powerful tool in the identification of favorable host rocks for a variety of ore deposits.

"Tamano Smelter or Hibi Kyodo Smelting Co. Ltd. is operating with the Tamano Type Flash Smelting Furnace method which is a flash smelting furnace without slag cleaning furnace but which can discharge a slag equivalent to that from the slag cleaning furnace and with the development or coke combustion technology which is the basis of this world's only one type flash smelting furnace process, the smelter exhibits a low operation cost under high productivity operation. Utilizing this experience and improving it we have developed and put to practice an operation guide system using a general purpose computer in order to further establish s stable operation. In this paper these improvements are described. Background of System DevelopmentWith the recent rapid progress of general purpose computers and improvements in their performance an environment for the use or computer in process simulation at low cost and simple operation has been established. If an accurate operation simulation can be done with the Tamano Type Flash Smelting Furnace the merits would be very great and thus we started development of the system. The official name of this system is Computer guide system for Coke Combustion in the T-FSF and taking the initial letters we call it CCCT. We aim to achieve operation with stable mane grade, temperature and slag loss in the furnace by maintaining the most suitable combustion conditions of concentrate and coke in the flash furnace with the assistance of CCCT to the flash smelting furnace operators.Through several production expansion projects clone in the past by oxygen enrichment the copper concentrate treatment quantity and matte grade have increased step by step as shown in Figure I. Following this increase the difference between the operation calculation results al the initial stage of coke combustion and the actual behavior of furnace (matte grade. temperature in the furnace. etc.) gradually became bigger. Further operation procedures taken by different operators against the same phenomenon were sometimes different depending on each individual, which from time to time caused the operation to become unstable. Prior to the development of the system we checked out thoroughly the weak points of operation calculation procedures which were in practice until that time. The results were analyzed and study was carried out to establish a most suitahle operation calculation procedure and finally we reached this system"

"The electrical conductivity and the oxygen release and uptake of sintered indium tin oxide (ITO) upon heating and cooling under the condition that P(O2)/P*=4.9X10-4 (P* = atmospheric pressure), :when P(O2) was approximately 50Pa, were simultaneously measured by using a closed-system oxygen-gas analyzer. A large increasing in -the electrical conductivity - upon the· oxygen release detected in 1130<T<1273K was observed. Quantitative relationship between the number of oxygen atom released from ITO and the conduction electron density in ITO was studied. The release of one oxygen atom agreed with the generation of two conduction electrons, i.e., the efficiency-carrier-generation for the oxygen release from the ITO was almost one. The oxygen atom released must be originally at the quasi-anion site in the C-type rare-earth lattice, i.e., the 16c site in the space group of Ia3, as an interstitial excess oxygen, Oi"". It was concluded that the mechanism of conduction carrier generation and compensation upon SnO2 doping into In2O3 can be expressed by the defect equation, 2SnO2-2Sn1n +2(1-z)e'+zOi""+3O0 x+(l-z)/2O2, and that the oxygen release bringing the increase in the electrical · conductivity can be expressed by the equation, Oi""-1/2O2+2e'.IntroductionThin films of SnO2-doped In2O 3 (generally designated as ITO, for indium tin oxide), which have high optical transparency for visible light and high electrical conductivity, have been used as transparent electrodes for liquid crystal and electrochromic displays. It is well known that the electrical conductivity of ITO depends on the content of SnOi-dopant and oxygen. However, a reliable relationship between electrical conductivity and the absolute oxygen content in ITO has yet to be reported. The elucidation of such a relationship is one of the important clues for realizing extremely highly conductive ITO electrodes."

"Metal-organic chemical vapor deposition has been shown to be a highly versatile technique for the synthesis of complex oxides. High dielectric constant oxide thin films of SrTiO3, BaTiO3, Ba1-xSrxTiO3 and SrxBa1-xNb2O6 can be be be deposited at 800 ºC with this technique. The fluorine substituted B-diketonate precursors have been shown to be well-suited for the deposition of high quality, epitaxial thin films of these materials.IntroductionThere has been a resurgence of interest in thin film ferroelectric oxides as a result of the development of techniques to deposit high quality material. Both physical and chemical vapor deposition techniques have been realized. Of the chemical vapor deposition techniques, metal-organic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD) has received the most interest for the deposition of ferroelectric oxide thin films. This results, in part, from the availability of a number of volatile metal-organic precursors.(l) Moreover, MOCVD offers the advantages of high growth rates, uniform coverage over large areas, conformability, abrupt interfaces and excellent epitaxial crystallinity. Of the metalorganic precursors, the B-diketonate complexes have played an important role especially in the deposition of ferroelectric oxides containing alkaline-earth metals such as BaTi03 and Ba1•XSrxTi03. For example, barium tetramethylheptanedionate Ba(thd)2 has been used in the preparation of BaTi03 by MOCVD.(2) These compounds, however, are not without their problems. Ba(dpm)2 has a relatively low volatility; and as a consequence, temperatures in excess of 180·C are required for volatilization. This leads to the necessity of a complex precursor delivery system to insure that the precursor does not condense before the reaction zone. Moreover, the Ba precursor tends to oligomerize leading to a decrease in vapor pressure as well as a problem with reproducibility. To counter these problems, novel liquid source and solid source precursor delivery systems have been developed. (3)(4)"

"The present work, likewise, deals with grain refinement of medium carbon steel AISI 1045 having different initial microstructure resulting from thermal and/or thermomechanical treatment (TM) applied prior severe plastic deformation. In case of TM treated steel, structure refinement was conducted in two steps. Preliminary structure refinement has been achieved due to multistep open die forging process which provided total strain Eef ~ 3. Uniform and fine recrystallized ferrite structure with grain size of the order of 2-5 µm and with nest-like pearlite colonies was obtained. The further grain refinement of steel samples having different initial structure was accomplished during warm Equal Channel Angular Pressing (ECAP) at 400°C. The microstructure development was analyzed in dependence of effective strain introduced ( Eef ~ 2.5 - 4). Employment of this processing route resulted in extensive deformation of ferrite grains where mixture of subgrains and ultrafine grain was found regardless the preliminary treatment of steel. As straining increases the dynamic polygonization and recrystallization became active to form mixture of polygonized subgrains and submicrocrystalline grains having high angle boundaries. The intensive straining and moderate ECAP temperature caused the partial cementite lamellae fragmentation and spheroidization as straining increased. The lamellae cementite spheroidization was more extensive in TM treated steel samples. The deformation behavior of for both steel structural state confirm the strength increase; however the work hardening behavior was modified with respect to initial structure of steel prior SPD processing.IntroductionIn the last years, ultrafine grained materials have attracted considerable research interest because they tend to possess high strength without sacrificing toughness and ductility. Microstructural refinement of steel is usually achieved by alloying and/or by thermomechanical treatment process, which modifies phase transformation. Recently, advancement of severe plastic deformation (SPD) techniques provides another efficient access for grain refinement of metals and alloys. The fabrication of bulk materials with ultrafine grain sizes has attracted a great deal of attention over the past two decades because of the materials' enhanced properties [ 1, 2]. In last decade a worldwide effort in manufacturing process to obtain ultrafine grain structures in steels is persisting."

"Abstract: How to reduce carbon dioxide emissions has become a vexing problem, meanwhile, there exist high energy consumption and low efficiency problems in the existing CO2 capture and storage technologies. For CO2 comprehensive Utilization, this paper researches a new technology of absorbing the CO2 emission with high alkaline calcium or high alkaline wastewater sludge mineralization of calcium and invent a core device for multi-level jet carbonation. The industrial test has been carried out in China Xinyu slag Engineering Co., Ltd. The wastewater flow is 150m3/h in the pilot scale. The prepared calcium carbonate has a whiteness greater than 90%, particle size less than 150nm. The mineralization of aluminum exhaust with waste carbide indicates that the CO2 absorption rate is greater than 99.0%, CO2 concentration in the exhaust gas is lower than 0.08%, the purity of mineralized calcium carbonate is greater than 99.0% and particle size is less than 100 nm.InstructionAccording to the statistic data from IEA (2009), the carbon dioxide discharge from fossil fuel consumption in China has exceeded it in the US by the year of 2007, China, has become the largest emitter of carbon dioxide all over the world. Meanwhile, the economic scale is still on an increasing trend in the next 50-100 years, leading to a continuous increment in carbon dioxide discharge. According to the international energy agency forecasts, the energy-relative CO2 discharge in China will rise to 11,615 million tons, 91.3% higher than it in 2007. In the year of 2012, the CO2 gross discharge has reached 10,000 million tons, obviously higher than the predicted value. It is a tremendous task to reduce the emission. Non-ferrous metals industry is one of the largest emitters of carbon dioxide among the industrial circle, the whole industry might discharge a huge amount of carbon dioxide (over 600 million tons), in which the electrolytic aluminum industry is the largest energy consuming industry and CO2 emitter. At present, the CO2 discharge has focused by the whole world due to the environmental problems it causes; meanwhile, supplement of new carbon source is needed due to the exhausting oil and coal resources, so that various countries in the world are attaching importance of the recycle and purification of CO2. Many countries are studying on the cyclic utilization of carbon dioxide. Gas CO2 is mainly applied in chemical, pharmaceutical raw materials, beverage filling agent, refrigerant, inert medium, solvents, pressure source, the welding protective gas, antioxidant and fire extinguishing agent, etc. Solid CO2 is mainly applied in penicillin production, fish, cream, ice cream and other food storage and transportation at low temperature, etc. nowadays, such methods as absorption method, membrane separation, adsorption, etc. are widely used to recycle CO2, with such problems as high investment cost and technical constraints etc."

"Niobium aluminides offer the advantage of higher high temperature capability compared to other intermetallic aluminides due to the refractory nature of niobium. However, the reaction sequence in Nb-Al system is sluggish and currently there is a great interest in the processing aspects of these materials. In the present study, a systematic investigation was undertaken to compare the effect of different powder metallurgy processing routes on the phase relations and microstructure of 66Nb-22AH2Ti (in atom percent) alloy. The three different process routes adopted were: (i) cold pressing followed by reaction sintering; (ii) cold pressing and hot pressing followed by sintering; and (iii) arc melting, hydride-dehydride process to make the alloy powder followed by cold pressing and then sintering. The samples are analyzed by XRD, Optical Microscopy, SEM-EDS and EPMA. The analysis showed that alloy pellets made from pre-alloyed powders i.e., arc melting followed by hydride-dehydride process, gave good densification and more Nb3Al formation.1. IntroductionTo improve the performance standards of turbine engines, materials scientists are challenged to develop materials that have· high thrust-to-weight ratio with high specific strength, high specific modulus and good environmental properties at elevated temperatures. The conventional high temperature materials like nickel based superalloys are high in density and hence many of the high temperature materials scientists have focussed their attention on intermetallic aluminides like Fe-AI, Nb-AI, Ni-AI and Ti-AI in recent years. The phase relations and properties of alloys based on Fe-AI, Ni-AI and Ti-AI are fairly well known whereas little is known about the alloys based on niobium aluminides."

"Data from samples taken during rotary air blast and reverse circulation drilling are crucial to properly assessing economics of mineral deposits in the case of exploratory work, and are equally critical in accurately delineating ore and waste in execution of mine operation plans. Past studies of sampling procedures, comparing results of conventional splitting to more precise extraction of representative samples, illustrate the significant degree of error frequently encountered. Economic impact of error in mine blast hole sampling work can be shown to result in theoretical losses valued at millions of dollars annually in operating large scale mining projects. Results of past drill sampling studies are reviewed.Drill sampling technique can be improved by collecting coarse and fine particles together and extracting samples for assay from the complete flow of rock and dust simultaneously. This can be accomplished with a collection unit attached to the drill stem through which all except a small proportion of extreme fines are retained. The bulk mass can be static sampled as flow takes place through the collector when size reduction is not required. Alternately, collected mass with fines and coarse intermingled can be processed for increased accuracy through size reduction to obtain proportional samples."

The synthesis processing of Mg2Si or Mg2Si/MgO at lower temperature from the elemental magnesium alloy powder/chips and Si or SiO2 powder mixture was established via the repeated plastic working (RPW) based on Powder Metallurgy (P/M) process. RPW is much effective on the mechanical breakage of MgO surface films, which prevent from the solid-state reaction between Mg and Si powder. The solid-state synthesized Mg2Si particle of 200nm-2JIm is extremely fine, compared to that via the conventional casting process, causing the coarse one of 50-100um. This is because of not coarsening during the solid-state synthesis of Mg2Si. By using in-situ forming process of Mg2Si via RPW and pre-heating before hot working such as extrusion and forging, the magnesium composite material with Mg2Si or Mg2Si/MgO dispersions was developed in employing Si or SiO2 particles, respectively. For example, when employing AZ31 chips as raw materials of the matrix, it has low density of 1.85g/cm) and extremely superior mechanical properties, such as tensile strength over 350MPa with 5-10% elongation and Young&apos;s modulus of 47-50GPa, to the conventional Mg-Al-Zn alloys. The Mg composite alloy wires and pipes were produced via the hot extrusion process in the manufacturing plant, and also showed excellent mechanical properties.

A fast high-temperature carburizing process integrated with materials design and optimization via a systems design approach was developed to significantly reduce process cycle time. Process experiments were focused on boost cycles to obtain a robust boost process and investigate surface reaction kinetics, primary carbide formation and dissolution. Weight gain and microhardness were measured, all showing evidence of non-monotonic time evolution for longer boost times at higher temperatures. Optical and electron microscopy and other techniques have been used to identify possible carbides, their location and types. These results assist the picking of first boost time with least variation rate in terms of content of case carbon and carbides, dissolvable in subsequent diffuse if any. The results also provide critical information to properly formulate surface reaction kinetics and diffusion and formation kinetics of carbides modeled using DICTRA. Water-quenched samples were taken from a commercial flash furnace at three levels along its reaction shaft during operation at high feed rate. The samples were subjected to a series of analysis and observation. Such processes of the feed in reaction shaft as oxidation, desulfurization, melting, slag and matte formation and etc., variations of particle size along axial and radical direction of the shaft are investigated. The following smelting mechanism in reaction shaft named as “Multi-particle and multi-phase fusion model” is proposed: (1) Fragmentation and collision of concentrate particles take place simultaneously in reaction shaft with particle size growing up. Collision produces large-size “unit melt” which falls into the reaction layer in the settler bath. (2) In the settler reaction layer below the shaft, weak bath smelting reactions take place among the shaft products, producing final matte and slag which separate into two layers. (3) The processes in the shaft are all progressive along the whole height of the shaft. The predominant reaction in the shaft is oxidation, not reduction.

"Mechanical alloying is a dry, high energy ball milling process which has been used to synthesize metallic powders in the solid state. The present study use this technique to synthesize Cu-base shape memory alloy powder from commercial Cu70Zn30, Cu86Zn14 and element AI powders. The evolution and formation of shape memory alloy powder were monitored using X-ray diffraction and microscopy. It was observed that shape memory alloy powder started to form after 1.8 ks of mechanical alloying. ? phase was clearly detected after 3.6 ks of mechanical alloying. The intensity of X-ray diffraction of the y phase increased when mechanical alloying duration was prolonged indicating an increase in the amount of y phase. Microstructure observation showed different stages of formation of alloyed powders: welding between powders and formation of layered structure, deformation and fracturing of layered structure, and finally the formation of alloyed powders.IntroductionMechanical alloying (MA) is a process used for producing powders with controlled and extremely fine microstructure. It was original developed in 1966 (1) to produce aNi-based superalloy combining oxide dispersion strengthening with gamma prime precipitation hardening. In recent years this technique has been used in producing a wide range of materials including intermetallic compounds (2, 3), amorphous materials (4-6) and other materials (7-9). In MA, a blend of powders is subjected to highly energetic compressive collision. The powder panicles are welded and fractured during ball milling. Therefore, it is essential that at least one of powders should be ductile to act as combiner. An extensive study has been carried out to determine the true cause of floating slimes precipitation which sometimes occurs and badly affects the quality of copper cathodes. Soluhilities of floating slime compounds systematically measured for the ternary system As-Sb-Ri added solely or in combination with conventional copper electrolyte (63°C) and bench scale electrorefining experiments done by varying electrolyte composition, have shown conclusively that the level of Sb(V) ions plays a substantial role in the precipitation mechanism. It was, therefore, speculated that controlling the level of the less soluble S b ( V ) ions below a certain critical level should result in a complete elimination of the undesirable precipitation. This can be easily achieved, for instance, by the addition of a reducing agent such as SO2 gas and the simultaneous employment of a certain type of cheating agent that effectively removes excessive Sb and Bi from the contaminated electrolyte. Long-term pilot testing conducted in line with the above speculation has confirmed the SO2/chelating resin scheme to be industrially very attractive and feasible.

The overall kinetics of oxidation of single partic1es of chalcopyrite have been studied for temperatures up to 1273 K. The experiments were conducted in a stationary bed reactor using a non-isothermal technique. Any mass and heat transfer effects on the kinetics of oxidation were eliminated by using a high-enough gas flowrate. Up to temperatures of 873 K, pore-bl1ocking kinetics were applicable, whereas above 873 K, power-law kinetics gave a satisfactory fit of the data. The activation energy was 215 kJ/mol below 754 Kand 23.7 kJ/mol above 1,060 K. Predominance area diagrams were constructed at various temperatures and used in conjunction with X-ray analyses of partially oxidized samples to determine the intermediate phases formed during the reaction. The analysi1s also provides a justification for the kinetic models used. The results indicate that the reaction rate is first order with respect to oxygen concentration and inversely proportional to the square of the particle size throughout the ranges of temperature studied.

The classic criteria of the preparation of the charge for the smelting of copper concentrates in at flash furnace considers the mass and energy balance from the chemical and mineralogy composition of the concentrates. The operation parameters fixed with this method don&apos;t assure the stability of the operation and the critical problems of the slag quality and dust formation occurs very often. This paper presents the results of a laboratory test that allows the prediction of the behavior of concentrates blends in the view of the minimization of the dust formation and the magnetite control in the slag. The combustion of different copper concentrates and blends were done in a drop tube furnace The results show that the magnetite and dust formation don&apos;t have a linear behavior with the weight proportion of the blend and some optimal blends of 2 or 3 types of concentrates can be identified. From the reasonable hypothesis that the qualitative behavior of blends in the drop tube represents the real behavior in the burner, the preparation of the charge with this approach could help to solve those operational problems.
