Thermodynamic data concerning FeO-containing slags is of importance in ladle refining of steel. With a view to generate a set of reliable and self-consistent thermodynamic data for these slags, experimental determination of the activities of FeO in binary and ternary slags was carried out using the gas equilibration method involving CO-C02-Ar gas mixtures at steelmaking temperatures. The slag samples in Pt crucibles were quenched after the equilibration and subjected to chemical analysis. The thermodynamic activities of "FeO" in the slags were calculated from the experimental data. The results are incorporated into a thermodynamic description of silicate melts in the present laboratory. The model is based on a Temkin-Lumsden approach and is able to compute the thermodynamics of higher order systems from the lower order ones.

A multidisciplinary team of scientists and engineers at Wont has been working to understand heavy metal contamination of DuPont process waste streams and technologies for abatement of these metals. As part of this effort, an extensive study was made of a specific waste stream of importance in DuPont's environmental commitment. This 200 gpm stream contains 5-5000 ppm of nickel plus a variety of inorganic and organic constituents. The chemical complexity of the waste rendered conventional. alkaline precipitation ineffective, and only through the simultaneous application of analytical characterization, fundamental chemical understanding, and process engineering did effective technical approaches emerge. In this instance, ion exchange, sulfide precipitation, and caustic digestion ultimately proved successful in reducing the nickel to below the 1 ppm target. The results of this study will be presented, along with key learnings about the process of solving heavy metal contamination problems.

Anglo Asian Mining have recently installed an industrial-scale UF/RO plant to treat process liquors from the integrated heap leach/agitation leach/ resin-in-pulp gold ore treatment facilities at their Gedabek gold-copper mine in Azerbaijan. The UF/RO plant is designed to treat 60 m3/h of leach solution to produce discharge quality water. The RO concentrate, which contains elevated concentrations of copper, silver and cyanide, is sent to the company’s SART plant for the recovery of the metal values as a precipitated sulphide concentrate and the cyanide, which is recycled to leaching. The new water treatment plant improves the sustainability of the operations at Gedabek by enabling replacement of fresh water input with RO permeate and safe discharge of permeate to the environment, during periods of excess water balance. The paper includes pilot plant data and early results from the full-scale plant.

"EMEC Consultants is developing a process to extract oxygen, aluminum and silicon from lunar anorthositic soil. The process will provide oxygen in space for propulsion, aluminum as a structural material, and possibly silicon for the construction of solar cells.The evolution of the process concept in the course of our present NASA-sponsored SBIR effort is discussed. A molten salt electrolysis producing aluminum and oxygen is the central step; inert anode technology is to be employed. Silicon will be produced by reducing the anorthite, CaAI2Si20S' with aluminum. In a steady-state operation, all components of the ore added have to be removed from the process, and the removal of calcium is a major topic of our experimental studies.Utilization of Lunar ResourcesUtilization of lunar resources may play an essential role in the exploration of the solar system and the conquest of space. High costs are involved in overcoming Earth's gravity to supply missions in space. Even at a low projected cost of $ 300 for transporting a pound of payload into Earth orbit -- today's costs are many times higher -- it appears attractive to use resources in space to produce needed materials. Processing of lunar resources on the lunar surface is an obvious possibility.Oxygen is a product of major interest. It is required for support of human life in space. Even greater quantities may be needed for propulsion, to conduct further missions into space. To satisfy this demand for oxygen through lunar processing requires a quite different solution than to supply oxygen on Earth, where oxygen gas is abundant and easy to extract from air or water. On the lunar surface, solid oxide materials have to be used. Hydrogen reduction of ilmenite and subsequent electrolysis of the resulting water is being studied [1]. Other suggestions include fluorination of lunar soil [2], reduction with lithium and electrolytic decomposition of the resulting lithium oxide [3], and aqueous HF leaching [4]."

Sodium borosilicate is the basic composition of coating materials, Vycor and Pyrex glasses. In the present study, viscosities of Na2O-Si02-B2O3 ternary melts were measured under various compositions and temperatures. Experiments were carried out using rotary viscometer and graphite components. Our experimental results were compared with those in literature. Based on present experimental results, the previous structure based viscosity model was modified. The predicted viscosity results are in excellent agreement with the present experimental data in the temperature range with molten state samples. The fitting ranges of the model cover the composition of XB2O3 from 0.1 to 0.6 combined with xSio2 / xNa2O = 0.5, 1,2 and 5 respectively.

Nanosized W based powders (W, WC, WC-Co) were produced by chemical vapor condensation (CVC) process. Two different solid W(CO)6 and Co2(CO)8 metal-organic materials were used as precursors. CVC experiment was conducted in the temperature range of 400-1100. As-CVC WC1-x powder which had non-stoichiometric composition was carburized by using of the CH4-H2 mixed gas in temperature range of 750-850. The CVC W and WC1-x powders showed loosely agglomeration structure, and the Co powder had intricate long stand structure because of intrinsic magnetic properties of Co phase. Carbon content of the CVC powders controlled by gas-phase carburization was well matched with theoretical WC stoichiometry (6.13wt%).

In hydrometallurgical processes of PGMs separation and refining, differences between 1-PGMs (Ru;Rh;Pd) and h-PGMs(Os;Ir;Pt) in thermodynamics and kinetics have been observed. The successful practice in the separation and refining of PGMs in China, is mainly based on the following two kinetically extraction sequences of: (1) for the extraction of PGMs complexes in different configurations with coordination mechanism (AuCI,) -> (MCl6)2-> (MCl4 )2-> (MCI6) 3- , and the substitution rate for h-PGMs complexes with higher effective nuclear charge Z' is much more slow than that of I-PGMs. and (2) for the extraction of PGMs in different configurations with oxonium (or ion -exchange) mechanism (AuCl4)-> (MCl4)2--> (MCl6)2-> (MCl6)3- and the extraction of h-PGMs complexes with low surface charge density is more fast than that of I-PGMs complexes. In view of atomic structure theory, the similarity of atomic radii and chemical properties and difficult separation of PGMs resulted from the Lanthanide Contruction between 5th period (1-PGMs) and 6th period (h-PGMs). The differences between h-PGMs and 1-PGMs are due to the loss shielding of 4f subshells on 5d electrons for h-PGMs with higher nuclear number, which makes h-PGMs have a higher Z' (effective nuclear charge) and strong attraction for outer space electrons. As a result, h-PGMs metals and complexes are thermodynamically more stable and kinetically more inert than the corresponding 1-PGMs. The differences between h-PGMs and 1 -PGMs in aspects of elements properties, complexes, hydration, substitution and redox reactions , are discussed.

Control of the reheating of ingots is based either on surface temperature measurements using optical pyrometers or on furnace set points and reheat time determined empirically. This paper presents a real-time mathematical heat flow model, named BESTT, which calculates the temperature distribution in an ingot cross section when reheated or cooled. The model runs on a 486 PC in less than one minute for a variety of ingot cross sectional shapes such as circular, square and with some considerations octagonal and heavy-cornered square. Initial temperatures can either be uniform or nonuniform while accounting for temperature dependent thermophysical properties. The model was developed and verified using 718 alloy ingots in box type furnaces. When integrated with on-line pyrometric measurements, BESTT can provide for improved feed back in the reheating control loop. The occurrence of gold in refractory gold ores varies widely and affects the recovery process. The determination of gold and the composition of the associated minerals are important in selecting an appropriate processing scheme. However, locating the gold in an ore sample is a difficult task which requires perseverance, luck, and experience. Our experience has led to the development of a relatively fast and reliable means of deter-mining the mineralogy of ore samples through analysis combining an energy-dispersive x-ray analyser coupled to a scanning electron microscope (SEM). In some cases, a wave length dispersive spectrometer or microprobe is used to further quantify the various mineral compositions. The SEM/microprobe analysis identifies the source of problems that may arise during the recovery of gold from refractory gold ores.

NioCorp is developing the niobium/scandium/titanium Elk Creek carbonatite deposit. The probable reserve announced by the company in 2017 indicated significant niobium (0.79% Nb2O5), titanium (2.81% TiO2), and scandium (71 g/t), and is composed predominantly of calcite, dolomite, and ankerite. Niobium is mostly (80%) contained in pyrochlore with the balance in various Fe-Nb-Ti oxides, which also host most of the titanium. Scandium is primarily deported in dolomite, with lesser quantities in pyrochlore and biotite. The process flowsheet recovers separate niobium, titanium, and scandium products. Scandium is extracted from whole ore hydrochloric acid leach solutions using solvent extraction and is further refined through a re-leach and precipitation process. Scandium leach residues are treated in a sulphuric acid sulphation process to recover separate niobium and titanium precipitates as well as to solubilize the remaining scandium. Both hydrochloric acid and sulphuric acid reagents are recycled within the flowsheet. This paper will discuss key bench and pilot test results of the niobium extraction and recovery circuits and will present a conceptual flowsheet developed by the project team for NioCorp at SGS Minerals.

The method of reduction roasting and magnetic separation of low-grade, micro- fine disseminated refractory iron ore following granulation with coal produced unexpected success. Pellets of iron ore with diameter between 3 and 8mm were granulated with coal, bentonite and water. The raw pellets and reduction products were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy and x-ray diffraction. Results show uniformly distributed coal powders inside the pellets improved the kinetics of the reduction process and accelerated the reduction rate. Reduction time was higher at temperatures below 890℃, which resulted in the formation of substantial amounts of fayalite. When temperature was increased, micro- fine hematite was then quickly reduced to iron metal and the amount of fayalite decreased sharply. When pellets were reduced at 950℃ for 25min, reduction products with 56.73% metallization rate were obtained. After grinding and magnetic separation, a concentrate with 72.18% Fetot was obtained.

"The energy is introduced directly into the volume of the honeycomb ceramic regenerator due to the complex interaction of microwaves with minerals in microwave gas heating system. A three-dimensional numerical model is developed to simulate the electromagnetic field by solving Maxwell's equations using finite-difference time-domain method. Computational result is presented for the microwave power absorption of the regenerator. Effects of the dielectric constant and the effective loss factor on the microwave power absorption in the regenerator are studied as well. Numerical results show that the heating pattern strongly depends on the dielectric property of the regenerator. The demonstration of the model of electromagnetic field distribution can be applied effectively and efficiently to optimize the fundamental parameters in the microwave heating processing.IntroductionIn recent years, microwave energy has been utilized in many fields, such as food processing, chemical engineering and mineral processing [l]. In contrast to conventional heating, where heat is transferred from a surface to the interior, microwave energy is introduced directly into the volume of minerals due to the complex interaction of the microwave with the mineral. The NISOMI-81 opaque mineral searcil and identification system uses quantitative color values (Pe, dA, y) and VHN as its determinative para-meters. The system is designed to operate on a Radio-Shack TRS-80 micro-computer which is interfaced to a motorised diffraction grating mono-chromator (WILSCAN). Using an interfaced monochromator/photometer combination a typical identification including the measurement of the photometer data on both specimen and standard, calculation of color values and a computer search takes about 6 minutes. The data file contains 240 minerals at present but can easily be expanded as reliable new data become available.

"The roasting characteristics of hematite pellets containing MgO were studied where magnesia powder, serpentine and magnesite were used as magnesium-additives respectively. The mechanical strength of both preheated and roasted pellets decreased when MgO content increased, which implied the addition of MgO had an adverse effect on pellet consolidation. By adding flux containing CaO, the mechanical strength of both preheated and roasted pellets were improved. The addition of calcium flux facilitated the formation of calcium ferrite and provided a certain amount of liquid phase, resulting in faster diffusion ofMg2+ and Fe3+. The result showed that diffusing speed of Mg2+ was enhanced by 1.48 times, and rate constant of Fe203 crystalline growth was enhanced by 62% when basicity was around 0.4. Improvement of mineralization degree and recrystallization of Fe203 assisted in consolidation of hematite pellets containing MgO.IntroductionOxidized pellets are ideal iron-bearing burdens in blast furnace. At present, magnetite is the main raw material for oxidized pellet production in China. However, as the rapid development of iron and steel industry, resources of magnetite have been depleted and cannot satisfy the requirement of pellet production. Using hematite concentrates to produce oxidized pellets has become a trend [1, 2]. Many pellet enterprises abroad nowadays have adopted high proportions of hematite concentrates when producing oxidized pellets, e.g. the percentage is 100% in a lot of Brazilian factories [3, 4]. But high proportion of hematite concentrates will lead to low mechanical strength and high reduction swelling index of pellets. Some studies show that Mg-bearing pellets have excellent metallurgical properties, and the reduction swelling phenomenon can be solved by adding fluxes containing MgO [5, 7]. However, there are problems such as low pellet strength and bad roasting characteristics for MgO-bearing pellets, which remains an obstacle in pellet industry. Hence, it's vital to undertake the study on strengthening measures for indurations of Mg-bearing hematite pellets."

Processes are needed to rapidly and cost-effectively produce highly pure lithium salts for the rechargeable battery sector. Lithium purification is a chemical engineering challenge, due to the low concentration of lithium compared to sodium, potassium, magnesium, calcium, and transition metal ions commonly occurring in lithium brine resources. We describe a Solid Phase Extraction (SPE) process that rejects sodium and potassium, while binding lithium and other higher valent ions. Lithium is then harvested by selective displacement from the SPE column. The rapid equilibration kinetics of SPE composites enables these ion separations to occur in a small SPE column and in one column stage. The chemical parameters of the process are described.

"Manganese is mainly consumed by steel and battery industries. In recent years, it is essential to utilize the low-grade manganese oxide ores with total manganese grade below 25%, as the high quality manganese ore resources are becoming scarce with the rapid development of the steel industry. Conventional pyro-metallurgical processes for utilizing manganese oxide ores are characterized by high production cost and energy consumption, low productivity, serious environmental pollution, etc. In this study, reduction thermodynamic of MnO2 reduced by sulfur was firstly carried out. Then, a novel process of reduction roasting with sulfur followed by acid leaching was developed to recover manganese from the very low-grade manganese oxide ores. Effects of main factors, including temperature, reduction time and S/Mn mole ratio, were investigated, and a high leaching efficiency of Mn above 95% was obtained under optimal conditions.IntroductionHigh/middle-grade manganese oxide ores are generally used in the metallurgical industries, particularly in steel plants and ferro-alloy units. The consumption of metal manganese in the ferro-alloy industry accounts for 85- 90% of the total Mn demanded [1]. Therefore, high quality manganese ore resources are becoming scarce with the rapid development of steel industry. It is essential to make good use of large quantity of low-grade manganese ores (TMn < 25%) presently available."

Lead blast furnace water-jacket stability was investigated by examining samples from the Port Pirie Lead Smelter. The compositions of the phases formed in the samples were analysed using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Electron Probe X-ray Microanalyser (EPMA). Phase equilibria analysis and thermodynamic modelling was undertaken using FactSage with latest thermodynamic database for the slag/matte/metal/speiss/solids multi-component Cu2O–PbO–ZnO– Al2O3–CaO–MgO–FeO–Fe2O3–SiO2–S major and As–Bi–Sb–Sn–Ag–Au minor elements system. Results indicated that the stability of the water-jacket steel wall without freeze-lining is influenced by formation of the complex Fe-rich speiss phase at critical As concentrations. The integrity of the furnace walls with freeze-lining is critically dependent of the stability of the oxide-based freeze-lining which is dependent on various factors including most critical one—the proportion of solids determined by the slag chemistry and fluxing. Thermodynamic modelling of the lead blast furnace operation indicated limiting thermochemical conditions for the water-jacket stability. Factors and controls critical to the water-jackets integrity are discussed.

Global Geoscience is developing a Rhyolite Ridge project, a shallow boron-lithium resource deposit, located in Nevada about 25 km from Albermarle’s Silver Peak operation. The main minerals of interest are the boron mineral searlesite (40%wt) and lithium containing clay minerals. These minerals are found among principally calcite, feldspar, muscovite, dolomite, and quartz. The equivalent commercial value is about 7–9% boric acid (H3BO3) and 0.8–1.0% lithium carbonate (Li2CO3) equivalents. Selective agitated leach tests at SGS Lakefield laboratory showed that searlesite can be acid leached between 20 and 75 °C and at a pH lower than 4. On the other hand, lithium can be leached between 20 and 75 °C and at a pH lower than 1. In other words, lithium can be recovered at low temperatures if sufficient free acid is available, which gave the motivation to investigate heap leaching of the mineral. The PLS contains boric acid, magnesium, sodium, lithium, potassium aluminium, and iron sulfates.

As a continuation of previous work, further tests have been carried out to recover silver from the residues obtained in a zinc jarosite process. Selective flotation has been performed with different reagents, and ?cleaning steps have been introduced to upgrade the silver concentrate. Leaching of crude residues, as well as flotation tailings, has been carried out with cyanide and thiourea. Finally, the different beneficiation methods are compared, and the industrial aspects? of their application are reviewed.

Systematic quantitative X-ray diffraction analyses performed on diamond-drill cores originating from the Aandenk formation at the Loraine Gold Mine, located in the Welkom goldfield, Orange Free State, South Africa, have revealed the presence of a number of phyllosilicate mineral assemblages which have not hitherto been reported from this region. Rectorite, a regularly interstratified 1:1 mica-montmorillonite "swelling clay", is found to occur together with paragonite, muscovite, pyrophyllite, kaolinite, and chlorite in highly-altered friable rocks. The presence of rectorite in mill feeds may have potentially serious implications with respect to gold recovery. Quantitative X-ray diffraction analysis for phyllosilicates can be used as an aid to correlation, and also to guide the widths of stopes in underground mining. Rectorite has a unique mode of origin, which is discussed.
