INTRODUCTION The Bureau of Mines (The Bureau) remote sensing researchers at the Denver (CO) Research Center, have been investigating computerized methods to detect and map surface linear features called "lineaments" for ground hazard assessment in mines. Many of these lineaments at the test mine site were found to correlate to subsurface geologic discontinuities such as faults, fractures, and joints that intersect coal seams at depth. These features adverse1 y affect the roof and rib integrity in underground mines, thus contributing to rock failures that may result in injuries to mine workers and loss of production. Advance knowledge of the existence of such hazardous geologic features can aid in mine planning and development. Lineaments may be observed in a variety of images of the earth's surface. Linear features that can be observed using Landsat mu1ti spectral scanner data (MSS) images range from regional (greater than 3 miles in length) to an intermediate length of from 1 to 3 miles. These images are recorded in discrete radiation bands in the green, red, and near-infrared portions of the el ectromaynetic spectrum. These data are acquired from the EROS Data Center of the U.S Geological Survey, Sioux Falls, SD, in digital format on magnetic tapes that are suitable for processing on certain minicomputers. Shorter lineaments length (less than 1 mile) can be observed in high- to low-a1titude aerial photography, radar, and infrared images with image scale ratios of 1:1,000,000 or less. These linear features can correlate to smaller dimensioned faults, and to fracture and joint sets at the local geologic scale. Other informational sources can help substantiate 1ineament analyses, such as well logs, mine naps, topographic data, and geophysical data acquired over the study site. The Upper Hidden Basin Diversion (UHBD) tunnel was driven approximately 1.2 miles by the drill-and-blast method primarily through massive granite bedrock geology for the Kodiak Electric Association, Inc. (KEA) in Kodiak, Alaska. The tunnel was driven from both portals with a constant 11-ft straight-leg horseshoe cross-section. The design and construction of the tunnel was driven by logistics and weather conditions due to its remote location and the rugged terrain of the project setting. This paper will discuss the successful completion of a challenging project over a ve-year period from preliminary planning through the design and construction phases.

I have been asked to talk to you this morning about phosphate marketing and distribution. In discussing this I will attempt to answer such questions as: What is phosphate? Where do we get it? What form is it and how do we sell it? How do we distribute it? How is it applied? And last, but not least, What about the future? To start with, phosphate is one of the three primary plant nutrients. It is the element essential for root structure of plants. Plants, like humans, need a balanced diet. Thus, the amount of phosphate required by individual plants is, in part, related to how much of the other nutrients are used. Virtually all soils contain a certain amount of available phosphates. Back at the turn of the century the most common source of additional plant nutrient, including phosphates, was from cattle manure. The use of chemical fertilizers is something that has grown significantly during the last half century, and in particular, the last 20 years.

Pursuant to the Federal Surface Mining Act of 1977 and the Illinois Surface Mining Act of 1980, Illinois has adopted revegetation success standard regulations that include the Agricultural Land Productivity Formula. The Formula establishes yield goals and standards to measure the success of meeting yield goals for reclaimed prime farmlands. The formula compares the quality of the pre-mining soils in the permit area and the county, to the crop production achieved on the reclaimed permit area and the county crop yield in a given crop year. The regulations also specify acceptable crops, erosion control requirements and time frames for demonstrating success.

INTRODUCTION Since the nineteen fifties, process engineers have been seriously concerned with process models for various purposes (1,2,3). Models serve as subroutines to mathematical flowsheets which simulate circuits of interest. Simulators can serve to increase process know- ledge, assess circuit performance, investigate flowsheet modifications, evaluate new flowsheets, perform off-line optimization, and compare alternative control strategies. This chapter describes a methodology to develop a simulator of a bulk Cu-Mo circuit comprised of roughers, scavengers and 3 stages of cleaning. The simulator was employed to evaluate the influence of water addition at circuit points and to estimate the optimal number of cells for each stage in the circuit. DESCRIPTION OF CIRCUIT Figure 1 is a flowsheet of the Brenda Mines Ltd. (located near Peachland, B. C.) bulk Cu-Mo flotation circuit as simulated prior to an expansion/renovation which involved the installation of large, new flotation cells. Referring to the flowsheet, feed to rougher cells includes fresh feed, scavenger concentrate and 1st cleaner tailing. Rougher con, 1st cleaner (sect ion 2) con and 2nd cleaner tailing are fed to 1st cleaners (section 1). 1st cleaner (section 1) concentrate and 3rd cleaner tailing serve as 2nd cleaner feed, while 2nd cleaner concentrate is fed to the 3rd cleaners which produce a final bulk concentrate. Table 1 lists cell types and specifications important to the circuit. DEVELOPMENT OF MODELS To develop flotation cell models a systematic procedure was employed (4). This involves the selection of responses and factors, proposing models to be fitted, the acquisition of raw data, the statistical adjustment of raw data, fitting models to adjusted data and testing the adequacy of fitted functions. Responses and Factors Responses of interest included recoveries, concentrate grades and concentrate solids/water flow rates for each stage. Factors that influence these responses, such as reagent addition rates, air flow rates to cells, solids and water flow rates to stages and feed grades were not manipulated during the sampling period. The underground coal mining systems have kept pace with the developments that have occurred in other types of mining industry. A diversified group of machines with high horsepower motors, built-in microprocessor technology and with numerous options to satisfy the miners need in a varying geological environment are now available. A brief review of this existing technology and its likely status within the next 21 years is presented. Discussed also are some of the on-going advanced developments in electronic mechanization, remote control and automation together with mine wide data monitoring and management systems and facilities to process and transmit data to remote computerized stations.

Solution mining operations often encounter difficulty maintaining adequate leach solution flow into the ore formation because of loss of formation permeability near the injection well. Permeability loss caused by swelling and breakup of clays and fine particle migration can often be the cause of the problem.

The Seismic Interactive Interpretation Workstation (IIW) integrates various sets of geophysical and geological data to form a network of information which is stored in a database. Computer models are generated from known drillhole information and later correlated with the processed seismic data. Seismic color processing adds another dimension to the interpretation process. Complex trace attributes provide better definition of subtle features not easily observed from black and white sections. Utilizing the computer workstation, the explorationist gains valuable insight and conducts more intelligent interpretation of seismic data through a more comprehensive network of data analysis.

Just south of the L'Enfant Station in Seventh Street, the WMATA system splits into two branches, each comprising twin single-track soft ground tunnels. Immediately at the beginning of the section, Interstate Route 95 crosses transversely over the alignment in open cut, removing most of the cover over the tunnels. Seventh Street spans I-95 on a bridge whose abutments and pier also cross transversely over the four tunnels, with their footings as little as 7 feet above the tunnel crown (Figure 1). Soil investigations revealed that the tunnels would have to be driven through mixed face, with a clay invert and a waterlogged sand crown. Thus, there was a good chance that the roof would fall in, leaving 1-95 and the Seventh Street Bridge in a crater. Since there was no roof that could be counted on, these were figuratively (and potentially truly) Washington Metro's Topless Tunnels (Figures 2 and 3). DESIGN ALTERNATIVES Faced with this situation, the designers considered several options, including temporary detours that would permit demolition of the bridge and building tunnels under the 1-95 Freeway by cut-and-cover methods. They also investigated structural underpinning of the bridge and freeway pavement, and strengthening the bridge abutments and center pier by post-tensioning to enable them to span over any subsidence trough.

In 2017, the North Texas Municipal Water District (NTMWD) initiated the design of the Sister Grove Regional Water Resource Recovery Facility (SGRWRRF) to provide additional treatment capacity for future population growth within the Lavon Lake watershed. To provide a discharge location for SGRWRRF approximately 4.5 miles of 2.4- meter (96-inch) internal diameter pipeline will be constructed, including 2.3-kilometer (7,800) feet and 487-meter (1,600 foot) long tunnel segments. This paper will discuss the anticipated geology of the two tunnel segments, selection of the tunnel alignment, the anticipated initial tunnel support requirements and other aspects of the project design

Constructed by stonemasons over 120 years ago, a portion of the Trout Brook Storm Sewer Interceptor (TBI) owned and operated by the Capitol Region Watershed District in Saint Paul, Minnesota, needed rehabilitation. A routine inspection of the 10-foot limestone block tunnel revealed degraded and missing mortar between the blocks, allowing significant infiltration and soil migration through the tunnel joints. Conditions, including damaged and missing blocks, were considerably worse in a 250-foot-long segment beneath a busy mainline railroad corridor. Barr’s solution included tuck-pointing to repair the mortar joints, shotcrete overlay, and construction of a hybrid cast-in-place/shotcrete “tunnel within a tunnel” to support the mainline railroad loads.

The Bay Park Conveyance Project was one of the largest microtunneling and rehab projects in the United States at the time of completion. The completed project conveys treated water from the South Shore Water Reclamation Facility located in Nassau County, New York, which currently discharges an average of 50 million gallons per day (MGD) of treated water into Reynolds Channel, to the Cedar Creek Water Pollution Control Plant (WPCP) ocean outfall pipe. The pipe carrying treated wastewater was installed approximately 20–60 feet below the surface. The treated wastewater is conveyed via microtunnel construction of a 2-mile long force main from the South Shore Water Reclamation Facility to an existing aqueduct under the Sunrise Highway, the rehabilitation of an 7.3-mile stretch of the aqueduct via sliplining, and construction via microtunnel of a 1.6-mile-long force main to connect the rehabilitated aqueduct to the existing Cedar Creek Water Pollution Control Plant (WPCP) outfall, which discharges and diffuses treated water three miles offshore in the Atlantic Ocean. This paper will review the Design-Build requirements, the chosen innovative solutions during planning for the micro tunneling portion of the project and review the microtunnel construction on the project.

Low-rank coal (LRC) drying processes are generally categorized by operating temperature, drying environment and type of feed (either sized or ground coal). Within these broad categories, drying processes differ according to the type of drying equipment and methods of quenching and stabilizing the dried products. This paper focuses on the produce quality of various LRC drying processes including conventional low and high temperature evaporative drying and non-evaporative, hydrothermal drying. The former may be preferred if the dried product can be utilized immediately, but moisture re-absorption, spontaneous heating and fines production during handling are problems associated with longer term storage, transportation and utilization. Methods for reducing these problems are discussed. Hydrothermal processing is an advanced technology featuring high pressure, non-evaporative drying, which solves stability problems by producing a liquid fuel.

A computer-assisted resources and sedimentological study of the Andersonville, Georgia kaolin-bauxite district was begun in 1975 under a grant from the Office of Mineral Resources of the U.S. Geological Survey (Grant # 14-08-1110-G-173). A preliminary report on the kaolin and bauxite resources of the district has been placed on open file at the U.S.G.S. in Reston, Virginia; the Georgia-Geological Survey in Atlanta, Georgia; and Georgia Southwestern College in Americus, Georgia. In addition to a resources estimate, the objectives include the determination of the mineralogical variation, sedimentological parameters, and paleogeographic patterns of the deposition of the high alumina materials and their associated sediments. In the process of compiling data for the resources estimate, isopach maps were developed that provide information as to the shape, size, and distribution of the kaolin deposits and the kaolinitic sediments that contain them. These or similar maps developed for other districts can be useful exploration tools.

Approximately 90% of all potash produced is employed as a fertilizer, either directly or with nitrogen and phosphorus. The remaining 10% is utilized in the manufacture of other chemical products, The original source of potassium was wood ash (hence the name potash), However, today the term potash refers to all commercially important salts of potassium. Sylvite, usually found associated with halite, is the predominant economic potash mineral; carnallite a lesser important source of potassium chloride, while langbeinite is important as a source of potassium sulphate. The world's first potash mining operation commenced in Strassfurt, Germany about 1860, Since that time the industry has grown steadily to its present annual volume of about 30, 000, 000 tons of potassium chloride products or 18, 000, 000 tons of K2O equivalent, potassium chloride or "muriate of potash" being equivalent to 63. 1% pure K2O, WORLD POTASH RESERVES ARE NOT EVENLY DISTRIBUTED The earth's crust contains 2 to 3 per cent potassium, mostly in the form of insoluble silicate minerals. The economically important deposits, however, are formed from brines concentrated by evaporation. The world's most important commercial deposits are of Devonian and Permian age, however soluble potassium bearing salts are presently being concentrated by evaporation in several drainage basins, notably Searles Lake, California, Great Salt Lake, Utah' and in the Dead Sea. At least twenty-four countries are known to have reserves of potash: Canada and the USSR have over 80% of the presently known world reserves, (Figure 1)

The prolonged exposure of equipment operators to shock and whole-body vibration (WBY) is linked to cumulative back, neck, and abdominal disorders. In low-coal mines, space restrictions make seat suspensions difficult to use in isolating operators from shock and WBY. Researchers at NIOSH, Pittsburgh Research Laboratory, are responding to these issues by investigating viscoelastic foams. For the full-load case. an ergonomic seat with viscoelastic foams isolated the shuttle car operator from shock at 15Hz. Researchers used results from additional foam testing with an analytical model to identify viscoelastic foams that provide shock isolation at a frequency below 5 Hz.

In this investigation, the differences in the absorption spectra of etheramines, fatty amines and condensates, mostly present as acetates, from several suppliers are characterized by means of infrared spectrometry. Sharp differences were observed in the absorption spectra of three types of amines and derivatives. Etheramines show a characteristic and well-defined peak at 1,114 cm-1. This peak is due to the ether C-O group and differentiates etheramines from the other classes. The absence of such a peak indicates that the species is not an etheramine. The distinction between condensates and fatty amines is made by the presence of a sharp peak around 3,200 cm-1. This peak is probably due to the proximity of the N-H amine groups and C=O carbonyl groups in the amide portion of the condensate's molecule and by different and better-defined bands in the 1,800- to 1,500-cm-1 range. The flotation performance of these amines was evaluated by means of the laboratory-scale flotation of an itabirite ore. The etheramines proved to be the most effective collectors for this system. Monoamines presented better performance than diamines for the ore under investigation.

The Equis and El Roble projects are located in the Cordillera Occidental of Colombia. The Equis vein deposits have sulfide ore reserves of 95,955 mt (105,770 st) grading 8.51 g/mt (0.248 oz/st) gold and 12.4 g/mt (0.36 oz/st) silver with 0.94 % copper, 1.10% lead and 11.06% zinc. Ore reserves at El Roble are estimated as 1.1 Mmt (1.21 million st) grading 4.89 % copper and 3.39 g/mt (0.099 oz/st) gold. Geologically possible reserves at Equis may total 1.6 Mmt (1.76 million st). El Roble has the potential to contain several tens of millions of metric tons. Exploration included diamond drilling, trenching, channel sampling, rock and soil geochemistry, geophysics and tunneling. Erratic high grade samples affect the weighting of channel and drill core samples. Secondary reconcentration of gold is also a factor. Sample maps and graphs show the distribution of values to be highly variable. Geostatistical treatment of some of these data gave important guidelines for parameters such as sampling densities, drill hole spacing and confidence limits.

In a continuing effort to improve plant efficiency, United States Steel's Atlantic City Ore Operations completed the rubber lining of its balling drums in late 1982. This resulted in benefits of reduced bentonite consumption, reduced maintenance costs, improved production rates, and lower power consumption. These advantages far outweigh the disadvantages of increased oversize production and increased surging on the roll screen sizing devices. Certain operating characteristics and variables are discussed herein.

The expanded role which coal has been assigned in the energy future of the United States has raised numerous policy questions. The very complexity of these questions makes them suitable to analysis by econometric models. However, as the Wall Street Journal indicated in its recent article, business' success with such models have been mixed. I have been asked to present my views as to how coal producers can use such models and in what ways the industry is likely to be impacted by such models. I do not presume to speak for the whole coal industry, but only to share with you the personal observations of one who has worked "both sides of the street", having been employed' both by government and a consulting firm prior to joining the coal industry. In my opinion, the use of econometric models to analyze the coal industry will impact the coal producers in two main ways. First, their use by government will have a profound impact on future government policies related to the mining, transportation and utilization of coal. Second, such models, when properly calibrated and refined, may become useful tools for the coal producers in doing market research and long-range planning. While the former has already begun to impact on the operating environment or the coal industry, the latter is still in the embryo stage.
