INTRODUCTION Good ventilation bulkheads (stoppings) can be obtained only by conscientiously adhering to four basic principles: carefully selecting the site for the bulkhead, adequately preparing the site, properly constructing and sealing the bulkhead, and checking the results with a smoke tube before leaving the area. If all these guidelines are followed during each ventilation project, a poor job will result only from the use of improper materials and cannot be blamed on carelessness or oversight. SITE SELECTION A perfectly constructed bulkhead in the wrong location can be completely worthless. Conceivably, a bulk-head in the wrong location could cause dangerous ventilation conditions that are difficult to identify and isolate. If the suggestions herein are followed, a considerable amount of work, time, and material may be saved. Perhaps the single most important step is always to select the exact site for a bulkhead before starting construction. Although the latitude in selecting a site may be limited by instructions or operating conditions, it is common to find poor bulkheads built within a few meters (feet) of a site that would have been far superior but was overlooked during the planning process. The ideal site for a bulkhead should have as many of the following features and conditions as possible: 1) To provide a solid bulkhead, the selected site should be in firm and unbroken ground. 2) To minimize the amount of work and material required and to minimize the danger of later damage to the bulkhead, the site should have as small a cross section as possible. 3) The bulkhead site should not be encumbered by interferences such as pipes, wires, ditches, wire roof supports, trash, muck piles, etc. 4) The walls and timbers of the site should be free from oil, grease, or tar that would inhibit adhesion of the sealant used on the bulkhead. 5) Unless special precautions are taken, the site should not have water seepage, standing water on the floor, or water-carrying ditches. 6) To expedite construction of the bulkhead, the site should have reasonable access to transportation, supplies, communication facilities, and compressed-air lines. 7) The site should have a reasonably level floor, allowing direction of the bulkhead door swing to be reversed at a later time if so desired. In a steeply sloping location, it may be possible to open the door in one direction only. SITE PREPARATION Once a suitable site has been selected for the bulk¬head, it must be prepared properly. All site preparation work should be completed before starting any construction work on the stopping itself. Unfavorable site conditions can be identified during the course of thepreliminary site preparation, saving time, effort, and materials that otherwise might be wasted. The follow¬ing preparation steps help assure the construction of a good stopping: 1) If wire mesh has been used at the site, a strip 457 mm (18 in.) wide should be cut and removed from the walls and roof at the selected location. 2) The exposed strip of rock should be barred down thoroughly to provide a smooth surface. 3) All obstructing materials should be removed, including old timbers, pipes, rockbolts, wires, etc. If a conduit must cross the bulkhead area, it should be located or relocated away from the floor, walls, and roof to allow a 6.28-rad (360°) seal around the juncture between the conduit and the bulkhead structure. 4) All loose muck should be cleaned from the site and a trench about 152 mm (6 in.) deep should be dug from wall to wall in the floor. The trench must be wide enough to accommodate the entire bulkhead, including the posts. 5) The rock surfaces of the walls and roof should be cleaned with a wire brush to remove as much loose surface material as possible. Thorough cleaning promotes adhesion of the bulkhead sealant to the surfaces of the walls and roof, thus promoting an airtight seal. 6) It is quite difficult to seal landing mats that cross a bulkhead. If such a crossing cannot be avoided, the bulkhead should be placed between the end and the first hole in the steel so at least one side of the bulk-head can be sealed easily and completely. That may have to be done prior to actual construction if the end is located on the opposite face from the seal coating of the bulkhead. BULKHEAD CONSTRUCTION The three principal considerations in bulkhead con¬struction are the type of bulkhead, materials to be used, and construction method to be employed. For many projects, the bulkheads are specified by the requesting agency, with no latitude for independent choice of the type, materials, or construction method. In such cases, any deviations from the specifications, for any reason, must be approved in advance by the proper department or by the project senior ventilation engineer. Types and Materials When a choice of type, materials, or method is allowed, consideration should be given to factors such as cost, required useful life, proximity to blasting concus¬sions, availability of materials, direction of permissible air leakage, and degree of airtightness required. Other factors to be considered include the amount of time available, accessibility of transportation, potential for interference with operations or production, ambient water conditions, availability of connections to com¬pressed-air lines, etc. Despite the multitude of factors to be considered, most stoppings can be analyzed easily and the proper choices can be made without much difficulty. Shortly after Asarco Inc. purchased the Ray Mines Division from Kennecott in 1986, the company began an expansion program to increase copper production. The Bechtel Corp. oversaw engineering procurement and construction management for a new in-pit crusher, overland conveyor system and concentrator facility. Construction started in May 1990 on these facets of the expansion project. The concentrator was commissioned in February 1992. The Ray concentrator uses a single-line, semiautogenous grinding circuit (SAG) with a design through¬put of 27 kt/d (30,000 stpd). In the early 1960s, Kennecott conducted pilot plant grind tests of Ray mine ores to determine their amenability to SAG and autogenous grinding methods. Those tests, though, were not followed up. During 1973 and 1982, Kennecott conducted additional pilot testing on some of the softer ore types. In 1989, Asarco ran a final series of SAG pilot grinding tests at Lakefield Research, which became the basis of the new Ray concentrator grinding circuit. Even though pilot test work demonstrated that some of the Ray ores gave satisfactory results during the autogenous grinding tests, the SAG option was selected for the primary comminution device. Due to the wide range of mineralogies encountered in the Ray ore body, selective mining and blending of these ores would be required to achieve the necessary production efficiencies and throughput rates using an autogenous grinding circuit.

The peatlands of the U.S. and Canadian parts of the Upper Great Lakes region have a long history of modest utilization in agriculture, forestry, horticulture, and as natural undisturbed areas. Only recently have they been assessed as potential sources of non-renewable or renewable energy. This new interest in peatlands, should current proposals be realized, might mean the commitment of millions of acres to energy production purposes. The magnitude alone of this potential utilization of peatland signals the possibility of substantial environmental disturbance, local resource shortages, resource use conflicts, and social and economic change. Peat- land resource managers in the region are just beginning to weigh the advantages and disadvantages of large-scale peatland utilization. The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources has made a considerable effort to study peat resource management issues and will shortly make recommendations to the state legislature regarding utilization alternatives. What follows is a general discussion of peatland utilization and management trends in the region with a focus on Minnesota and its peatland management efforts.

INTRODUCTION The City of Oslo together with the neighbor municipalities, Baerum and Asker, are presently building a jointly owned sewage treatment plant located on the west side of the inner Oslofjord. The project is scheduled for completion late 1981. Because the location of the treatment plant is at a distance of about 20 miles (30 km) from the city center, a discharge of more than 13 yds 3/sec (10 m3/sec.) of sewage and storm water will have to be transported over considerable distances. The topography of the area and the geological conditions early indicated that the only realistic transport method had to be through tunnels. As planning proceeded, full face tunnel boring emerged more and more as a favorable alternative to conventional drill and blast medhods. Today the scheme comprises nearly 25 miles (40 km) of tunnels being excavated by full face tunnel borers. In addition a number of access tunnels and cross cuts are to be excavated by conventional methods.

Water quality impacts of shallow water submersion of partially weathered and oxidized waste rock containing reactive sulphide minerals were investigated in laboratory column lysimeter studies. The waste rock investigated was highly reactive, contained oxidation reaction products from previous exposure and weathering, and had a low sulphur content of approximately 2 % S, mostly as pyrite. The submerged waste rock, though previously weathered, had high oxygen consumption, resulting in rapid depletion of dissolved oxygen in its pore water, within a shallow depth of ~2?5 cm from the surface. The surface and pore water qualities of the submerged waste rock were significantly impacted by the dissolution and release of previous-oxidation-reaction products, which contributed to their rapid acidification and having increased concentrations of dissolved SO4, Fe total and other metals: Al, Mn, Ca, Cu, Ni, Zn and Pb. Despite the high porosity and permeability of the waste rock, the diffusion controlled mass transfer from the submerged waste rock to the overlying water cover was relatively low for most ionic species. Additional surface oxidation of the sub-merged, partially weathered waste rock was on-going, but its impact on the overall surface water quality was low and masked by the dissolution and release of previous oxidation reaction products to both surface and pore water regimes.

When Dick Robbins asked me to give a keynote address, I felt it might be in order to review some of the practices and techniques used in tunneling and work up to some of the concepts now used to mine and construct tunnels. Needless to say, there have been many changes in tunneling technology and also many changes in the Safety Codes controling them. An example of this latter change was the fact that in 1931, my father excavated the Owyhee Tunnel No.5 with gas locomotives. He was able to do it because there was no natural gas in the rock and the ventilation system was designed to free the tunnel atmosphere from powder and exhaust fumes. Today OSHA rules would never permit gas locomotives underground, although there were no incidents on this particular project. One of my first tunnels, as Project Manager, was the Clear Creek Tunnel for the Bureau of Reclamation. Our method of handling muck was the Conway Muckers. This unit was a valuable improvement to the hand mucking of previous generations. The Conway was also used in our Navajo Project, in New Mexico. Unlike the Clear Creek project, where water was one of our main problems - up to 7,200 gallons per minute, at a pressure of 395 pounds per square inch - in the Navajo Tunnel, we had a mixed face which caused a major problem with our support system. In one of the Navajo Tunnels, there was a major cave-in, when the squeezing shale came in during an attempt to strengthen the support system. Although moving shale was not a constant problem, there were areas where the shale was five to six feet above the spring line.

INTRODUCTION The prediction of the engineering behavior of a rock mass depends upon the systematic analyses of the results of an exploration program, and upon the recognition of the significant rock properties in the early stages of excavation. The variations in rock properties in different geologic terrains and the state of the geotechnical art preclude complete success in the former case, and we therefore must rely heavily on the experience gained in the latter phase. The geotechnical information obtained from these two phases is only of value to the design engineer when applied to the rock behavior during excavation and subsequent plant operation. Pertinent questions which must be answered include: how does the joint orientation and frequency effect tunnel support and overall cavern stability; how does the depth of surficial soil or weathering effect foundations or slope stability for portal cuts; are there permeable zones within the rock mass that could lead to leakage problems around penstocks and is the material in these zones soluble or likely to pipe in the long term; and does the proposed engineering structure fit the terrain, or will it inevitably lead to problems requiring extensive remedial treatment. To maintain good condition of ventilation for both safety and economy, many regulators are installed in a network. In case the open state of a regulator is different from the set point, identification of a broken regulator and a countermeasure to recover airflow distribution in a network must be initiated as soon as possible. An experienced mining engineer can sense a deviation from ordinary airflow quantity. In this paper, a new system to monitor all the regulators in a network is introduced. The basic concept of the system is utilization of both human sensing of airflow rate and computer simulation to understand the macroscopic characteristics of a ventilation network. A fuzzy pattern distinction method is used to process human determination of airflow rate that may be ambiguous. The applicability of the system is demonstrated using the ventilation network of the Horonai coal mine, Japan. In particular, it is shown that the system can identify the regulator to be repaired from information supplied by workers relating to air- flow in a few sensor branches.

This paper describes the formulation of mine ventilation network optimization as a standard nonlinear programming problem and the solution of the problem using the generalized reduced gradient (GRG) method. In general, the GRG method is regarded as one of the most effective and efficient methods for solving large-scale nonlinear programming problems. The variables considered in the network optimization include air quantity, regulator pressure loss, and fan pressure for each branch. Each of the variables is constrained by lower and upper bounds. This facilitates proper assignments of ventilation requirements and provides a great flexibility to include various situations encountered in mine ventilation. The objective of the network optimization is to minimize the overall air power consumed by or supplied to the network; whereas the constraints are, in addition to the variable bounds, the two fundamental network laws: Kirchhoffs voltage law and Kirchhoffs current law. A computer program has been developed based on the GRG method for the network optimization. An example of network with 18 branches, 8 regulators and 3 fans is included for illustration.

The Westside Light Rail Project, a major 19.3-km (12-mile) extension of Portland, Oregon's light rail system, includes 4.6 km (2.8 miles) of twin 5.8-m (19-ft) diameter running tunnels, a binocular type station which, at 80 m (260 ft) below the ground surface, will be the deepest mass transit station in North America, two 9.4-m (31-ft) diameter station access shafts, and a 5.2-m (17¬ft) diameter ventilation shaft. The tunnels are being excavated by TBM and conventional rock, soft ground, and mixed-face methods. Geologic conditions, alignment, underground opening design, excavation method selection, and payment provisions for excavation and initial ground support are discussed.

[Introduction] Since excess lung cancer mortality was first noted in the late 1800's among Joachimsthal-Schneeberg miners, there have been a number of studies of the long term health effects among various types of miners exposed to elevated levels of radon and its radioactive decay daughters. Substantial excesses of lung cancer have been noted among miners in the Joachimsthal mines (Sevc, 1976) , lead-zinc miners in Sweden (Axelson, 1979) , fluorspar miners in Canada (DeVilliers, 1971) , iron miners in Sweden (Renard, 1974) , uranium miners in Canada (Hewitt, 1976), and metal (Wagoner, 1963) and uranium miners in the United States (Lundin, 1971; Archer, 1976). The latter prospective cohort has also been shown to be at an excess risk of death due to tuberculosis, nonmalignant respiratory disease, and accidents when followed through September 30, 1974 (Archer, 1976). This report extends the followup of this cohort of miners through December 31, 1977 and expands the mortality analysis to investigate more cause-specific categories. [Methods] During the decade beginning with July, 1950, medical teams from the United States Public Health Service (USPHS) examined 3362 white and approximately 780 nonwhite males who had worked underground in uranium mines in the Colorado Plateau at least one month by January 1, 1964. Occupational, medical, and smoking histories were obtained during the examinations and often updated/confirmed during subsequent annual censuses of the miners conducted by the USPHS. The white miners now have been followed-up through December 31, 1977 using the Social Security Administration, Internal Revenue Service, direct telephoning and various other sources. Death certificates were obtained for the deceased and coded directly into the Seventh Revision of the International Classification of Diseases, Adapted, using the rules in effect at the time of death. Deceased miners for whom no certificate has yet been located were assumed dead on the date specified by the reporting agency, cause of death unknown. The uranium miners cohort was analyzed using a modified life-table system developed by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). Person-years at risk of dying (PYAR) were calculated for each miner from his first USPHS medical examination date or date upon completion of one month of underground uranium mining if that was later. PYAR were calculated specific for five-year age groups, calendar periods, and periods after first underground uranium mining. The numbers of cause-specific observed deaths among the cohort occurring by December 31, 1977 were compared to the numbers of expected deaths. The expected deaths were calculated by multiplying the appropriate PYAR by the United States death rates for white males specific for five-year age groups, five-year calendar periods, and cause. The results were summed over the age and calendar period specific categories to obtain the total expected deaths for each cause. Standardized Mortality Ratios (SMR's) were calculated for each cause by dividing the observed number of deaths by the expected number of deaths and multiplying by 100. In some tables, two-sided 95% confidence intervals for the SMR's were computed using either Fisher exact confidence limits, if the observed frequency was less than eight, or approximate confidence limits, if the observed frequency was eight or greater, to indicate statistical significance. Because a priori hypotheses had been well established, one-sided lower confidence limits were used for tuberculosis, lung cancer, other nonmalignant respiratory disease (ONMRD), accidents, and total mortality. [Results] The cohort included 589 miners first examined in either 1950, 1951 or 1953; 753 first examined in 1954; 1235 first examined in 1957; 5 first examined in 1958; and 782 first examined in 1960. In Figure 1 the distribution of the cohort by first year of underground uranium mining indicates that 13.7% started before 1947 and would have thus had an opportunity to be followed beyond 30 years

The world energy crisis has created a greatly expanded exploration program for energy fuels. The demand for materials required for drilling operations such as barite, which is the primary component of drilling fluids, has increased proportionally. As in the case of many other minerals, existing high grade barite mines are no longer capable of producing the required tonnage. Consequently, exploration and development of lower grade ore bodies has been increased. The need to produce a high quality product at maximum recovery rates, along with the ever changing economics affecting both selling price and production costs has triggered accelerated research programs toward more sophisticated and efficient beneficiation methods. Taking into account the specific gravity differential between barite (4.5) and the normal gangue minerals such as silica and calcite (2.7), gravity concentration methods are the prime consideration with flotation as a scavenging process. Greater emphasis on particle size liberation, size reduction and concentration is also indicated. In order to accomplish these objectives, it has been necessary to revert back to the old adage, "Recover your minerals as soon as they are free."

The general application of memory cutting technology to shearers is improving the intelligence of the working face, but it has its limitations. It is only suitable for conditions where the environment of coal seam is changing slowly. It compensates for the cutting height by changing the fuselage attitude, and frequently adjusts the height to control the learning cutting trajectory, but due to the problems of shearer control and height adjustment accuracy, it cannot adapt to and compensate for the change of cutting height in a timely manner, resulting in poor cutting accuracy. This study puts forward a virtual memory cutting method based on prediction of the shape of the armored face conveyor (AFC). Beam theory is a proxy for the behavior of intact, deforming roof strata above underground openings. Strong, stiff, intact strata have the ability to store significant strain energy when underground openings have large spans, as is typical of longwall operations. When strata fail, they may release some or all of this strain energy. Released energy is partitioned between fracture, thermal and seismic energy. The tensile failure surface in simply supported beams is predicted to be free of shear stress. This prediction and the kinematic inability of crack slip during fracture make significant dissipation of energy by friction unlikely.  In this study, the failure energy partitioning of specimens from the Nugget Sandstone formation is examined. Tensile fractures in specimens were induced using three-point loading tests. Elastic waves emanating from fracture events were recorded using an array of accelerometers. Accelerometers were placed within two crack lengths of the fracture surface, and the acceleration records are similar to strong motion seismic records. Spectral analysis was performed and used to develop synthetic, well-behaved, acceleration signals. Synthetic velocity signals were used to estimate radiated seismic energy generated by fracture. These estimates of radiated seismic energy demonstrate a potential means to constrain the minimum seismic partition. Fracture testing was performed on additional samples to estimate the fracture toughness of the sandstone. Synthesis of this data demonstrates a potential means to constrain a maximum seismic partition. Bounding the seismic partition for this type of fracture event could aid the detection and evaluation of seismicity emanating from longwall operations. Having better information about the location and magnitude of mining induced seismicity within longwall overburdens could lead to better understanding of extraction sequencing and rock behavior in general. These energy estimates also support the hypothesis that dissipation of thermal energy by friction is small in bending tensile failure.

"...Unfortunately, the research activities in soil mechanics had one undesirable psychological effect. They diverted the attention of many investigators and teachers from the manifold limitations imposed by nature on the application of mathematics to problems in earthwork engineering. As a consequence, more and more emphasis has been placed on refinements in sampling and testing and on those very few problems that can be solved with accuracy. Yet accurate solutions can be obtained only if the soil strata are practically homogeneous and continuous...." This statement about soil mechanics was made by Karl Terzaghi, thirty years ago and applies to a greater degree today to the infant science of rock mechanics. More uncontrolled variables are added to the already many existing in soil mechanics. Variables, such as Macro-discontinuity and in situ stress levels. In no other field of engineering are the problems as site oriented. Presently this site dependance demands the investigator or rock mechanics engineer to get his hands dirty rooting in the muck of a tunnel floor trying to properly install or readout test apparatus in a comprehensive site investigation. This paper discusses such a site investigation designed to determine the problems and solutions inherent in the driving of the Trans Koolau Tunnel. The paper will describe the various types of tests to be performed, how the results are to be used and the interrelation of the various tests themselves.

The properties, origin and industrial uses of kaolin clay are briefly reviewed. The general waterwashed beneficiation process is described. Yost aspects of filtration and solids-liquid separation as practiced in the kaolin industry are mentioned along with devices that are currently in the developmental stage. The paper focuses heavily on the well known art of rotary vacuum filtration, including general construction and operating details. Devices under investigation that might be used to mechanically or electrically dewater clay slurries to higher cake solids levels than can be achieved with rotary vacuum filters are described briefly.

The opportunity to cooperate with the Mining Department of the Pennsylvania State University in their Student-Trainee Program is accepted by The New Jersey Zinc Company who believes that the participation in this type of a program will lead to a larger supply of high calibre engineers in mining. Trainees compete with other employees to earn the cost of their education while gaining practical experience in the mining industry. The practical experience is arranged to complement the technical education through a variety of work assignments. Job opportunities for the trainee are related to the work requirements of the Company and to the performance of the trainee. Management must consider and deal with a good many problems uncommon with regular, full 'time employees. For a number of reasons this program is recommended to other companies as a means to encourage outstanding young men who are interested in a career in the mineral industry to obtain a professiona1 education.

Bauxite, dolomite, and magnesite are natural occurring minerals that are used extensively in the manufacture of refractory products. In addition, magnesia produced from seawater or brine finds its way into the production of refractories. All of these materials must be processed at high temperatures, 1500°C to 2200°C, to produce an intermediate raw material (refractory grain) , which can then be used in the final manufacture of refractory bricks and shapes. During the last 20 years, the major supply of refractory bauxite has been from Guyana, and at times the annual production has ranged up to 1,000,000 tons per year. More recently, China has become a major source of refractory grade bauxite by supplying over 300,000 TPY. Other sources of bauxite in lesser quantities have been Surinam, Brazil, and the U.S.A. During 1980, the estimated available world tonnage amounted to slightly more than 1,300,000 tons. The bulk of this material has been calcined in rotary kilns except for some of the Chinese production, which was treated in shaft kilns. Recent work has indicated that an excellent product can be produced in the Nichols Shaft Kiln using much less fuel than the conventional rotary kiln. Details of the Nichols Shaft Kiln will be provided later in this paper.

Before the first shovelful of dirt is removed from a developing mining property, a wide range of data must be collected, organized and analyzed. Among the key steps in this process are: • Visualization of the deposit from drill hole data and geologic interpretation, using all available information, including surface geology, geochemistry and geophysics. • Drawing of vertical and horizontal sections. • Construction of a 3D solid model of the deposit. • Contouring of deposit outlines and geological structure until the model represents best estimate of reality. • Estimation of grade and quality distribution. • Calculation of reserves. • Examination of possible mining methods. • Determination of economic feasibility. Many techniques are available to aid in this process of mine project feasibility analysis, from quick pencil calculations to sophisticated computer methods. However, time races faster in the complex modem business world than it did 50 years ago. Tried and true pencil methods take too much time. Opportunity may pass a mine developer by while a property is still in the first stages of analysis. In the days of hand techniques, initial analysis of the economic feasibility of a mining project usually stopped with reserve calculations and broad mine planning. Further planning was not done or was done only for the short term. Manual techniques require too much time and manpower to evaluate a longterm mining program. Mining-industry recognition of computer utility has increased. Most companies now use computers in technical applications and could not conceive of working without them. Building initial computer models of a deposit may take nearly as long as hand techniques. But the payback comes when changes are needed and a variety of mine plans are quickly tested.

INTRODUCTION The use of roof and rock bolts to reinforce the strata is an established method of rock support in both underground and surface excavations. However, the need to drill a hole, extract the drill-rods, and then place the bolt is time-consuming and costly. This becomes even more significant if the bolting is repetitive and extensive as in coal mining. Though the main thrust of this development was directed towards coal mining, the basic concepts are also widely applicable to all excavations. The authors, therefore, feel that this innovation should be of interest in rapid excavation and in tunneling. In the case of coal mining, it has been established from past statistics that the roof-bolting operation is the most hazardous activity. This is primarily because of the operator being exposed to unsupported ground. It is evident that remote installation of roof bolts would markedly improve the safety of the operation, if accomplished more readily with self-drilling bolts rather than the conventional two-step variety operation. Thus, in addition to increasing productivity, this development can be considered to be a milestone towards further improvements. The objective of this program was to establish the technical and economic feasibility of self-drilling roof bolts for use in coal mines. It might be clarified at the outset that this work was, therefore, directed primarily at showing that workable self-drilling bolts with less cost can be developed, which could be effectively used in mines. It was not to fabricate a production model bolt.
