Of the fossil fuels used for power generation coal is by far the most variable and complex in its properties. A thorough review of the characteristics of the coal to be fired is essential before boiler design can begin. Major parameters such as heating value, moisture content and ash properties will determine not only the boiler size and configuration, but also the performance of the unit with respect to the thermal efficiency, particulate and gaseous emissions, and unit availability and reliability. An example of a review completed on a large low-rank coal deposit for a power plant will be described.

The construction and erection of the Coleraine concentrating plant was commenced in April, 1909, and was completed (with the machinery installed) ready for use in 1910. Attached to the main building is 'a table house large enough to accommodate con¬centrating tables for five units and space for a small machine shop and supply store. For the handling of the' railroad cars in the upper portion of the mill there is provided on the north side of the main structure a trestle approach 650 feet long, and on the south or opposite side a tail track 300 feet long. The latter is so constructed as to permit its being incorporated directly in a possible future extension of the plant. The building, viaduct approach and tail, trestle, as well as the table house, are con¬structed of steel, the total amount used being 6,100 tons. The building is covered by corrugated' steel sheeting over 2 x 6-inch wood sheathing fastened directly to the structural steel. The north end of the trestle approach is connected with the main road-beds forming the track system for delivery of the crude ore to the plant over an embankment of a maximum height of 110 feet containing over 2,000,000 cubic yards of dirt.

Particle processing is a key to using solid particles in fuel cell applications. Selectivity with regard to reactivity, impurities, etc. is important feature and the treatment of particle surfaces could greatly impact the performance of direct carbon fuel cells. Solid fuel particles will become increasingly important in the future. Present energy conversion systems for solid fuels are too inefficient. New energy conversion systems for solid fuels with higher energy conversion efficiencies are possible. Fuel cell technology is a key-technology in these new conversion systems. The direct carbon fuel cell (DCFC) operates on carbon particles obtained from a variety of solid fuel feedstocks. The DCFC is the only fuel cell designed to directly oxidize carbon particles in a special anode chamber. The particles are generally graphite structure with high purity. The electrolyte used is the high temperature solid oxide, molten carbonate or hydroxide electrolyte. Since a pure stream of CO2 is produced the stream can easily be sequestered and disposed. Pure carbon dioxide produced as a by-product would also have a market in many industries. A well-defined technology roadmap identifying key research and development (R&D) issues is necessary to provide a framework for the development of these systems and to prevent entrenchment in inherently inefficient technologies. This review paper describes the direct carbon fuel cell and its system, how it works, the developmental status, the characteristics of the carbon particles needed, and the research and development issues for the technology. INTRODUCTION The DCFC has been under development for many years. It was researched as early as 18961), but an intense research and development is necessary to realize its potential. William W Jacques, a US electrical engineer and chemist, described a DCFC in 1896 in US Patent 555511 for a “Method of converting potential energy of carbon into electrical energy”. Jacques used coke electrodes in a molten NaOH electrolyte. Molten carbonate fuel cell (MCFC), solid oxide (SOFC) or hydroxide electrolyte (AFC) technologies can be used as the basis for the DCFC technology. A schematic of the direct carbon fuel cell in the MCFC mode is shown in Figure 1. The molten carbonate fuel cell operates at approximately 650°C (1200°F). The high operating temperature is needed to achievesufficient conductivity of the carbonate electrolyte, yet allow the use of low-cost metal cell components. A benefit associated with this high temperature is that noble metal catalysts are not required for the cell electrochemical oxidation and reduction processes. [Introductory Remarks] Thermoluminescence (TL) detectors are widely used for the dosimetry of X- and[ y]-rays. Also filter devices for radon daughter monitoring have been developed in which the a activity on the filter was measured with TL-detectors (Breslin et al., 1977). For this purpose normal LiF-tablets with a thickness of 0.4 - 1 mm were used. However the lower detection limit of such TLmonitors for radon daughters is relative high, especially in areas with a high [y]-background, due to the low [a /-y]-sensitivity ratio of such thick LiF-detectors. This [a/y]-sensitivity ratio can be increased if TL-detectors are used whose thickness is comparable with the range of [a]-particles. On the basis of this consideration we have developed a simple light weighted and sensitive TL-monitor for the measurement of the cumulative radon daughter exposure in air. [Description of the "Monitor] The monitor consists of two parts: The sampling pump with the accumulator, and the sampling probe which contains the air filter and TL-detector system. Both parts are connected with a plastic tube. For operation in mines a light weight, portable air sampler with a built-in accumulator (DuPont model 125 and 200, 400 g) is used which enables an adjustable, constant flow rate in the range of 7.5 -12 1/h. These air samplers allow a sampling period of 10 hours before recharging is necessary. For radon daughter measurements in houses this pump is replaced by a larger, netoperated pump with a flow rate of 180 1/h. Figure 1 shows a schematic cross section through the sampling probe whose weight is 40 g. The radon daughters are collected on a hydrophob membrane filter (Sartorius) with an effective filter diameter of 11 mm and a pore diameter of 3 µm; its collection efficiency for radon daughters is [>] 95%. Above the filter the detector system is mounted. It consists of two thin Tm-activated CaSO4-TL films of 8 mm diameter on a Al-carrier foil manufactured by Matsushita Inc., Japan. The thickness of the TL-film is 6 mg/cm2, which is comparable with the range of a rays. The first detector is faced in 3.5 mm distance above the filter; in addition to the ambient y background this detector is exposed to the [a] and ß radiation from the radon daughters on the filter. Between the first and the second TL-detector is an Al-absorber of 0.5 mm thickness which shields this detector against the [a] radiation and partly also to the ß radiation from the filter. Both detectors have the same [y] shielding. After air sampling both TL-detectors are read-out with a commercial, hot-air reader (Matsushita Inc. / Japan, Model 505 A). The glow-curves are identical for [a and y] rays (Regulla et al., 1980). The integral TLsignal from both detectors is displayed in mR-units (or mR-equivalent). The difference between the response of the unshielded TL-detector above the filter and the shielded TL-detector is proportional to the time-integral of the filter activity, integrated over the sampling period. Calibration and Intercomparison Measurements] The linearity of the a response was checked with a 241Am-source for an [a] fluence on the detector surface of 5400 [a's/cm2•s] in the range of 102 -105 mR-equivalent. Within the experimental error of 15% the response function is linear. The TLD-monitor was calibrated for radon daughters in air by comparison with a calibrated integrating, monitor (WLM-meter) equipped with a Si-surface barrier detector and a direct electronic read-out; this instrument was developed by us for area monitoring some years ago (Haider et al., 1976). The results of simultaneous measurements with the TL-monitor and the electronic WLM-meter in mine areas and in indoor air of houses are shown in figure 2. On the abscissa the mean potential [a] energy concentration (in WL) during the sampling period is given which was derived from the measurements with the electronic WLM-meter. On the ordinate the corresponding response of the TLDmonitor to radon daughters (difference between both TL-detectors) is displayed, expressed in terms of mRequivalent per liter sampled air. It follows from this comparison a linear relationship over the whole range of 0.005 - 5 WL with a standard deviation of 10%. The resulting calibration factor for the TLD-monitor is 18± 2 mRequiv per WL • 1.

HISTORICAL BACKGROUND A program in France to develop personal [a] dosimeters has been initiated 1974. The patent on which is based the present device was obtained in 1972 * . From 1972 to 1974, the possibilities of applying certain ionograph track detectors to the spectrodosimetry of radon daughters was explored. The first prototype were produced in 1974. It took four years (from 1974 to 1978) to produce an autonomous dosimeter whose components has a sufficient life span, especially for the turbine motor unit. Qualification in the laboratory was obtained in 1977. In 1978 it was obtained in the mine for technology (autonomy of 12 hours and a life span of more than one year) and in 1980 for monitoring. 300 dosimeters have been tested in underground mines all together. Indispensable peripheral equipment were also developed from 1976 to 1980 : calibration devices, equipment to prepare and develop the films, read out systems. The concept of an "Integrated System of Individual Dosimetry" (ISID) based on a personal [a] dosimeter measuring exposure to radon daughters, thoron daughters, ore dust and external irradiation doses was proposed at the end of 1980. Since January 1st 1981, ISID is used on a routine basis in some french mines, situated in remote area, and appears to be very competitive with the ambiant dosimetry. The latest version of the dosimeter is produced in mass series since June 1981 and should equip all french mines in 1982. DESCRIPTION OF THE INSTRUMENTATION DEVELOPMENT OF THE DOSIMETER MEASURING HEAD The measuring head is based on the use of ionographic film to detect a tracks. In fact, the measuring head is a spectrodosimeter which measures separately over the period of exposure: - the potential [a] energy inhaled due to the decay of Po 218, Po 214, and Po 212 ; - the number of Rn 222 atoms inhaled ; - the inhaled total [a] activity of the five long-lived emitters present in the ore dust. The contribution to the total inhalable potential [a] energy of these various radionuclidesin a typical underground mine is studied in Appendix I. The measuring head described in detail in Appendix II, is able to satisfy all the implications made in the ICRP recommendations. Appendix III deals with the use of this measuring head in the cases where the equilibrium factor is lower than 0.1. This situation occur in open-pit mines where account must be taken of the Rn 222 contribution, which is no longer negligible in relation to that of its daughters. CURRENT DOSIMETER PERFORMANCES Table I shows the characteristics of the latest dosimeter. Appendix IV should be consulted concerning qualification of the dosimeter in the laboratory and in mines, technological development which finally produced the [a] dosimeter and its peripheral equipment, and technical presentation of the ISID (Integrated System of Individual Dosimetry) based on the concept of a multirisk personal dosimeter. Data on the installation and operating costs of such a dosimeter, which would seem to be competitive, are also given in this Appendix. ADVANTAGES OF PERSONAL DOSIMETRY AS COMPARED TO AREA MONITORING The results of the first eight months of experiments carried out under real conditions in an underground mine site are given in detail in reference 8. Area monitoring : The monthly exposure per worker to inhaled Rn 222 was determined from the knowledge of time spent in various areas of the mine and for the different mining operations, as well as from numerous and systematic sampling of the Rn 222 concentration in all work places. Personal dosimetry : The exposure to potential energy from radon daughters was measured by an [a] dosimeter developed by the CEA and worn by each of the 160 miners during eight months. In this way 160 x 8 pairs of monthly individual exposure values have been obtained which can be statistically studied. This test was decisive for us because it proved that the [a] dosimeter was technically sound (very few defects over one year for 160 dosimeters) and especially that personal monitoring devices were superior to area monitoring devices. The following conclusions can be drawn 1. The exposure distribution obtained by personal dosimetry is log-normal. This is true for the results on the whole as well as for groups of results relating to certain explanatory variables. See fig. la, 1b, 1c. 2. The exposure distribution obtained by area monitoring does not correspond to any type of distribution. If the results of personal monitoring are taken as a reference, area monitoring tends to underestimate the high exposures and overestimate the low exposures.See fig. 2. 3. [a]-energy exposures are underestimated when calculated from radon exposures and the equilibrium factor found in the considered mines. This is due to episodes or to zones of high radon concentrations not registered

"The mining of tabular deposits accounts for a significant portion of modern production in both underground hard rock and especially, soft rock mining. There is a large discrepancy between the availability of tabular reserves and the amount of development of these deposits, particularly when the deposit has a dip of around 25-50 degrees. This project studied the technical and practical barriers to the mining of these deposits through modern and historical case studies. The primary technical barriers to the development of these deposits are material movement and roof support. The study of historical attempts overcome these barriers and why they failed allowed us to research the possibility of implementing modern technology on previously unsuccessful methods. By modifying some common mining methods, some of these deposits can be mined at only a marginal increase in cost and using readily available equipment. These modified mining methods could make previously underdeveloped deposits to become viable. INTRODUCTION Tabular deposits are defined as orebodies that extend at least hundreds of meters along two dimensions, and a substantially smaller amount along another [1]. Moderately bedded tabular deposits are mined less often than their more horizontal counterparts due to the technical issues they present. These issues often cause lower productivity, higher cost, and more frequent accidents. Moderate dip is a less well defined term; but in this case, it will refer to any deposit which has a dip of at least 20°. This paper will focus on deposits that dip around 25°-50° and are deep enough to require underground excavation methods. These deposits are too steep for most conventional methods yet not steep enough for gravity fed methods to work efficiently. In some cases, this dip range is also referred to as intermediate or steeply dipping. The types of deposits most likely to fall into this category are sedimentary bedded deposits such as coal, trona, evaporates, placers, and other alluvial deposits. Some other types of deposits can fall into this category as well. These include some of the metal reefs such as the Bushveld Complex in South Africa, which was deposited by lava flows, but is tabular. Some areas have dips that fall into the moderately inclined category. There are also some metamorphic deposits such as slate or marble that can have dips of more than 20°. The dip angle of these deposits can cause several challenges. Ore movement becomes more difficult as the exceeds the limits of conventional conveyors, rubber-tired, or tracked vehicles. At the same time the dip is below the angle of repose of the material. This prevents gravity assisted haulage, as the ore and waste will not run downhill by itself. Another common problem in moderately inclined underground mines is roof support. The dip angle can increase the risk of pillar and support failure. This is due to slippage between rock layers, non-perpendicular support of the vertical stresses, and slippage of standing supports. The inclination leads to stresses that are not usually found in typical horizontally bedded deposits. These stresses may require larger pillars that may reduce ore recovery below profitable levels."

The recent shale gas revolution in the United States has led to the drilling of hundreds of unconventional shale gas wells in active and future coal reserves in traditional coal-mining regions of Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Ohio. This paper summarizes the impact of a shale gas well breach on the mine ventilation system of an operating longwall panel. This study utilizes a 1:30 scaled Longwall Instrumented Aerodynamic Model (LIAM) to simulate a single-panel longwall operation. The LIAM will be utilized to identify flow pathways and distribution patterns of gas from breached gas well scenarios in an operating longwall in the Pittsburgh Coal Seam. Sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) tracer gas is utilized to simulate a breached gas well. Preliminary findings suggest that the breached gas is diluted to regulatory levels and does not accumulate in the mine entries or in the longwall gob when the longwall panel is adequately ventilated. Overall, this study characterizes the potential interaction between shale gas wells and the mine environment in the event of a gas well breach, which provides critical information to the industry and regulatory agencies for improving safety, health, and welfare of miners.

"Virtually every article you read on safety has a statement to the effect: “It’s obvious that safety pays”. If it is so obvious, why is it so hard to answer these questions? • How does the Maintenance or Operations Manager convince the Plant Manager to spend money from the annual budget for safety improvements? • How does the Plant Manager influence Corporate to prioritize safety improvements? • How does an engineering firm persuade the owner to spend more on design and equipment up front to reduce risk? There are many cultural and structural reasons why it is so difficult to prove the obvious. In my opinion the main culprits are: the almost universally used ‘Low Bid’ process, variations in reporting incident statistics between industries and countries, and, the Generally Accepted Accounting procedures (GAAP) [or International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS)]. Conventional wisdom is it’s smart not to spend more than you need to meet the minimum regulations and maximize production. But buying on price alone often harms people, degrades the environment, and reduces the company’s bottom line. How can this be? You met the minimum safety requirements and saved money by buying on price. Don’t those savings go right to the bottom line? When you buy on price you get minimum quality, minimum compliance and are often backed corner with no reasonable options to rectify the problems that arise from buying on price instead of buying on long term life cycle cost. Culturally few companies actually ‘walk the talk’. It is trendy to have giant billboards at plant entrances proclaiming world class compliance with quality and safety standards. Annual reports are embellished with safety slogans and sustainability statements. Behind the front gates and the glossy annual reports the message is clear: produce or be replaced. Only a few companies go beyond the window dressing and actually endorse, from the top down, continuously improving their safety culture. Those that do embrace safety, show significant performance advantages over their competition that are reflected in their safety, productivity and environmental records and, ultimately their financial statements and share price. Current accounting (and reward) systems make it unlikely financial managers will accept non-conventional approaches to justifying expenditures on safety because they are driven to report “hard” numbers that can be documented and are within the “GAAP or IFRS Rules.” But in reality, accountants quantify soft or intangible costs all the time in their financial statements. Justifying safety investments is greatly enhanced by quantifying what most financial managers would call intangible costs. Government agencies have no problem assigning intangible costs to justify regulations to improve safety. How many times have you heard that the regulation is justified because the cost to industry is X while the benefit to the society is 2 or 3X? How can they say that without including intangible costs? We find it hard to believe these government claims of benefits to society because we have been trained to think about saving hard direct costs to justify investments."

In recent years, considerable advances have taken place worldwide in the design and construction of first tunnel linings. With these advances, there is a tendency to move away from traditional support that includes heavy open profiles of rolled steel arches, to a lighter solution with the use of an optimized tubular steel cross section rib, and shotcrete reinforced with steel mesh and/or steel fibers, providing a continuous support (Lunardi, 1982). The development of tubular ribs has provided greater design options, increasing flexibility to engineers and contractors while providing a efficient and cost effective construction method. In this article, the authors describe numerical and experimental investigation on this problem, suggesting as a new first lining steel arch design approach by using tubular ribs cross section as new technical solution for first lining underground support.

The Bond ball mill grindability test is one of the most common metrics used in the mining industry for ore hardness measurements. The test is an important part of the Bond work index methodology for designing and measuring the efficiency of mineral grinding circuits. In spite of being called “Bond’s Law,” the work index equations are not a law of nature; but rather an empirically measured regression of a large data set collected by the Allis- Chalmers corporation in the period between 1930 and 1952. As a regression, it is valid within a specific “calibration space,” and great care is required when deviating the test procedures or observing results that are outside of that calibration space. This paper is a collected summary of other works by the Authors that describe feed sizes, product sizes, quality control checks, and other information about interpreting the test and using its results. Examples of adjustments that are sometimes required when using the test are: changing the test product (P80), and coping with a feed that is too fine to apply the “proper” feed preparation steps (such as is sometimes observed from HPGR or SAGDesign product testing). Related metrics, like the Morrell Mib value and Levin B value will be discussed, along with recommendations for their use on design projects. The intended audience is any user of laboratory work index test data.

The rare earth elements (REEs) are a group of 17 chemical (metallic) elements. REEs are used widely in high-technology, clean-energy products as well as weapon systems. China's dominant position as a producer of over 95% of the world REEs output and the world's increasing reliance on REE products have highlighted concerns about the future availability of rare earths in recent years. This paper briefly reviews the REEs world reserves, production, consumption, the impact of our heavy reliance on REEs products and China's changing policies on REE export on world supply chain.

"Shotcrete and mesh are often installed to control ground deformation, falls and ejection between bolts. The combination of mesh and shotcrete forms a panel or plate that is typically bent by ground extruding between restraining rockbolts. The ground pressure applied (that is, the resistance of these panels to bending) over large ground deformations is important for maintaining ground support safety. This paper describes a new test device that measures this resistance and its evolution over large deformations. Mixes of shotcrete, mesh and other components that can maintain significant support pressure are desired, a characteristic described as the “toughness” of support. Results show toughness depends largely on how shotcrete is integrated with other components. Shotcrete strength is less important. INTRODUCTION Ground control safety often depends on supporting, or at least containing, the ground between the rockbolts. Shotcrete and mesh, in various combinations and with other components, are often called upon to do this (Figure 1). Applications are especially common in mines with squeezing ground or seismic loading. The support pressure maintained during ground deformation is key to the performance of these systems, and to protecting miner safety. However, the toughness of a design is difficult to estimate. Researchers at the Office of Mine Safety and Health Research (OMSHR) responded to this deficiency or “gap” by designing a full scale test device, described in this paper, and beginning a testing program. Some initial results from this program are reported to demonstrate test capabilities.BACKGROUND - TOUGHNESS Mining in ground that fails from the combination of in situ and mining induced stress is commonplace. Ground support elements are installed to reinforce such ground and preserve mine safety. Typically, the strength of support is considered key, and is used to prevent or halt yielding. However, ground movements driven by creep of weak ground or seismic loading may be impossible to halt altogether. In these cases, it is essential that support is able to yield with the ground in a safe manner while maintaining confining pressure that mobilizes the strength of rock in the immediate perimeter of the opening. In addition, it’s usually desirable to contain ground between rockbolts to protect miners from loose rock that might fall or be ejected. Shotcrete and screen are often employed, sometimes together and in combination with other support elements, to accomplish this function. A key characteristic of such a system is its ability to maintain support pressure through large ground deformations, a characteristic often called “toughness” – especially in support systems incorporating shotcrete. Toughness can be quantified as the work done during deformation (e.g. force x displacement)."

The development of transportation systems for mined materials has historically been characterized by steadily increasing sizes in basic hauling units. This is especially true for open pit mines for which success is dependent upon the economical transportation of vast quantities of material. The depletion of high grade ore reserves has mandated a tremendous increase in the size and complexity of the ore haulage systems necessary for open pit mines, These increased demands were served by rail haulage systems in the early large open pit copper mines while later developed properties opted for the flexibility and lower initial costs of truck haulage. Now, we find the trucks being displaced as large overland belt conveyors tackle the problem of handling these ever larger quantities of low-grade ores with accompanying overburden ratios that can run as high as 10:1 or even 15:1. The basic development of large conveyors with shiftable sections and modular belts has generally taken place overseas, during the last few decades. The coal fields of central Europe proved an ideal testing ground for conveyor innovation because the low density and natural friability of the material created an ideal medium for transporting by belt conveyor. Now these proven ideas are being considered for and implemented into both the soft and hard rock mining industries of the United States.

Rapidly rising gas and oil prices and the falling quality of coal is forcing energy users in many parts of the world to consider the application of low grade fuel, particularly coal, for steam raising and power generation. However, the use of such low grade coal is normally resisted by the consumer because of operational problems associated with high ash content, sulfur emission and, in some instances, slagging problems caused by low melting temperature constituents in the ash. Recently developed technology involving 'fluidized bed combustion' offers a potential solution to these operational problems. Much of the early work was conducted in Britain, where rig tests were commenced during the early 1960's. This has led on to the successful conversion and operation of a fluidized bed fired industrial boiler at the Renfrew works of Babcock & Wilcox Ltd. Orders for the first commercial boilers incorporating this technology have recently been announced. Significant development work on fluidized combustion is now being undertaken in various parts of the world, in particular North America, Germany and Japan, and the first large scale units are under construction or being commissioned. This paper concentrates on the development of the technology in Britain, outlines the reasons for applying fluidized bed combustion and de-scribes its application at atmospheric pressure for steam raising and at elevated pressure for power generation . Coal Processing Consultants is a Partnership between the National Coal Board and Babcock & Wilcox Ltd. of Britain and has been established in order to provide technical advice and economic evaluations on all aspects of coal processing and utilization. Sintering as applied to agglomeration of ferrous fines has shown little growth in the United States in recent years. The general concensus was that most of the existing facilities would remain in production at a reduced tonnage to dispose of and recover solid waste from steel plants. Further growth for ferrous sintering technology was not in sight in the United States and in the early sixties expansion came to a virtual standstill, however, we witnessed a rapid emergence of a tremendous pelletizing industry. On other continents, due to different raw materials supply and capital structure, sintering technology continued to grow, with a more cautious development of pelletizing installations. In the U.S. the diminishing supply of good quality, high grade coarse ore resulted in eventual disappearance of high grade ore fines for sintering. The finely divided concentrates produced from lower grade ores were not amenable to this type of agglomeration, but were more suitable for pelletizing. Furthermore, pellets seemed to possess all the features of an ideal blast furnace feed; namely pellets are free flowing, uniform in size, strong, with extremely uniform chemical composition and good reducibility. Importance and demand for such well stabilized furnace feed further increased as size of newly installed blast furnaces continued to grow. The in- creasing demand for a uniform, stabilized burden coincided with the effort to produce a fully beneficiated burden for smelting, thus reverting the blast furnace to its primary function of smelting.

You may think long before this talk has been completed that the speaker is belaboring the obvious. Please let me put to rest here and now any doubt which you may have in this regard by assuring you that is precisely my intent, and for a very specific reason. We all profess to know and recognize the obvious, but I am impressed increasingly how often we forget or fail to act upon the obvious. Shortly after starting my first job upon graduation from college, I was asked by my boss to participate in a course on practical communications, particularly as applied to conveying proposals effectively to the client -- be he customer or company president. The concept or philosophy underlying this program was so simple and obvious that in my youthful brashness I saw only a gross waste by the company of e good, solid $1930 in compelling me to take the course. The sequel to this experience occurred about five yews ago when I was directing a 300-man marketing group. At that time I enrolled a dozen of my department heads, and subsequently about a hundred other personnel, in the contemporary version of that sane program. Why? -- because they all knew the obvious, but I could see how imperfectly they were implementing it. Truly, a wide chasm exists all too often in our beliefs on the one hand and our practices on the other.

Quantitative hydrogeologic characterization of fractured rock is challenging because fracture systems are convoluted and difficult to characterize discretely. For large-scale water resource impact analyses, it may be more appropriate to use a watershed water balance approach and analyze fractured systems in terms of “bulk” hydraulic parameters over a large enough scale (hundreds of meters), so that the fractured media may be evaluated as “equivalent” porous media [1]. This is a common investigative methodology for mountain watersheds in fractured bedrock terrain because it does not rely on discrete flow paths but instead evaluates inputs to (recharge) and outputs from (discharge) the ground-water system [2,3]. This paper describes the use of this methodology to perform a practical and cost-effective hydrogeologic characterization and mining impact analysis for a proposed granite quarry in a mountain watershed. The key conclusions of the study guided the mine planning that was designed to minimize impacts to the fractured granite hydrogeologic system and preserve recharge to downgradient sedimentary aquifers.

"Refuge alternatives provide shelter to miners trapped underground during a disaster. Manufacturers must demonstrate that their refuge alternatives meet the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) requirements for oxygen supply, carbon dioxide removal, and management of heat from the occupants and mechanical/chemical systems. In this study, miner size and activity level were used to determine the metabolic heat rate, oxygen requirements and carbon dioxide generation that are representative of miners in a refuge situation. A convenience sample of 198 male miners was used for the distribution of current U.S. coal miners, and the composite 95th percentile height and weight were determined to be 193 cm (76 in.) and 133 kg (293 lb). The resting metabolic rate (RMR) was determined to be representative of activity level in a refuge alternative. The highest likely metabolic heat generation ranged from 113 to 134 W, depending on occupancy. The highest required oxygen supply and carbon dioxide removal were estimated to be 23 L (0.81 cu ft) of oxygen per hour per person and 20 L (0.71 cu ft) of carbon dioxide per hour per person, which means the margin of safety is 50 percent or more compared with the MSHA requirements. The information on metabolic heat generation can be used to assess refuge alternative thermal environments by testing or simulation. The required oxygen supply and carbon dioxide removal can be used to assess refuge alternative requirements. This paper describes the technical status of the atmospheric pressure fluidized bed combustion (AFBC) process for utility steam generation. Major areas where AFBC development work is needed are discussed. Various approaches to solving these key issues are identified and the ongoing research and development programs addressing the key development areas are described. Other significant programs pertaining to the development of AFBC for utility steam generation are also discussed and needs for future work identified.
