A coal mine located in southern West Virginia recently set a world record for daily low-seam coal production using a Cat automated longwall plow system. In a 24-hour period on April 10 and 11, 2014, the Pinnacle Mine longwall produced 32,411 t (35,724 st) from the Virginia Pocahontas No. 3 Seam, in a seam height of just 1.42 m (56 in.) along the 298-m (980-ft) longwall face. The Pinnacle Mine, located near the town of Pineville and owned by Cliffs Natural Resources Inc., an international mining and resource company, operates a Cat Gleithobel GH1600 Longwall Plow System. A previous record was set by this system at Pinnacle in August, 2012 when 29,423 t (32,430 st) were mined in a 24-hour period. The record was set by the same system, mining its second panel after a comprehensive rebuild was performed by Carter Machinery, the Cat Dealer in that area. The rebuild encompassed a complete rebuild of the headgate and tailgate armored face conveyor (AFC) drive, the headgate and tailgate special AFC pans, the stageloader drives and return end, the complete crusher and all gearboxes for the plow, AFC and stageloader. Carter acquired the rights to sales and aftermarket support associated with the former Bucyrus mining products, both surface and underground, in 2013. ?Supporting and rebuilding a longwall plow system was a new experience for the Carter service team,? said Chris Curfman, president of Caterpillar Global Mining Sales and Support Division. ?However, given the record production results attained by the rebuilt system at Pinnacle, it?s obvious that they are up to the challenge of supporting the underground product lines at the same high standards and quality level that they have been delivering for many years on the traditional Cat surface mining products.? In the United States, about one-quarter of the fuel oil and natural gas consumption is associated with power production in utility and industrial boilers and process heat needs in industrial furnaces. Coal has been an attractive candidate for replacement of these premium fuels because of its low cost, but there are penalties associated with the solid fuel form. In many cases pulverized coal is unacceptable as a premium fuel replacement because of the extensive cost of retrofitting an existing boiler designed to burn oil or gas. In the cases of synthetic fuels from coal, research and development still has a long way to go and the costs of research and development are very high. Another option which appears very attractive is the use of solid coal in a liquid fuel form, coal slurry fuels. Occidental Research Corporation (ORC) has been developing coal slurry fuels in conjunction with Island Creek Coal (ICC,) Occidental Petroleum's wholly-owned subsidiary. Both Coal-Oil Mixtures and Coal -Water Mixtures are under development. ICC is a large eastern coal producer, engaged in the production and marketing of bituminous coal, both utility steam and high quality/low volatile metallurgical coals. A sister division, Sheridan Enterprises is engaged in the development of western coals.

Mine planners must select a single pit for design with the knowledge that the grades on which this selection is made are uncertain. This uncertainty is often ignored through the use of deterministic models of grade. This makes the mine planner?s job simpler but does not necessarily lead to the ?correct? or ?best? selection. Grade uncertainty is typically modeled with conditional simulation, which generates multiple possible realizations of grade that are equally probable (or improbable). M ethods for incorporating grade uncertainty into mine planning to date have either been perceived as being too complicated, not accessible or too time-consuming. This paper proposes a simple and efficient modeling approach to incorporating conditional simulation into pit optimization, which would be able to be applied in currently commercially available software. An example for R esolute M ining Ltd.?s Syama gold project in M ali shows the range of ore, grade and value outcomes associated with generating pits through a variety of methods.

Mine explosions are one of the most concerning risks related to underground coal mining, as a single gas explosion can cause injuries and fatalities among miners. Underground infrastructure seals and build-in-place (BIP) refuge alternatives (RAs) are employed to isolate an area from active workings to mitigate coal mining-related accident risks. They are designed to withstand blast pressures from a possible accidental detonation of the contained gas or a coal dust explosion. Crosscut seals and BIP RAs, typically consisting of steel-reinforced concrete, are prone to strong convergence and have a significant leakage potential due to high convergence damage near mined-out areas. The roof-to-floor convergence can change the structural integrity of these structures, and altered structural integrity can lead to less explosion resistance capability. Hence, a thorough analysis is needed to further understand their explosion response under various strata conditions.

As surface minable coal is depleted, many operators look to high-wall mining to extend reserve life. Recent advances in highwall mining equipment have greatly improved productivity, clean coal recovery, and attainable penetration beneath the highwall. Somewhat lagging have been systematic design approaches for ensuring web pillar and overall highwall stability. This paper presents an overview of the design, planning, and field performance of a multiple-seam highwall mining application in southwest Wyoming. The safety and efficiency obtained to date is attributable to the careful geotechnical and operational planning described herein. Field confirmation of performance and suggestions for improvement are also discussed.

This paper will review world trends that are increasingly restrictive of mineral exploration and mining throughout the Free World This is occurring in the face of projected huge increases in demand for mineral products Some of the impediments are direct and absolute; others are indirect, but nevertheless effective; still others represent merely hostile attitudes Many of the world governments have a reputation for lack of integrity in dealing with existing foreign investments within their borders, and consequently are quite uninviting places for new investments, especially in the capital intensive natural resources industry. Compared with even 35 odd years ago (and pre-World War II is not that long ago) there are few places left where private mining investments are both wanted and where investors are willing, to go. We shall begin with an analysis of conditions in the U. S., shift to neighboring Canada and Flexico, and then have a look around the world. As the world grows smaller for the private mining sector, the function of exploration, development, and operation is passing over to government. We'll conclude with a view of what this holds for the future

A four-mile length of interceptor sewer tunnel in Manhattan has finished sizes ranging from 10'6" to 14'6" horseshoe. Mixed face conditions were anticipated in three areas and encountered in five. All were short but since the tunnel lies well below the water table and failures would involve important utilities, major structures and human lives, great care had to be exercized in choosing a construc¬tion method. Chemical consolidation was selected as the best approach with compressed air working as a backup system. Initially grouting was accomplished from within the tunnel, but treatment from the surface was more successful and was later adopted. The soils consisted largely of impermeable weak silts and it was found possible to inhibit access of water to this material so that it could be controlled by breasting within the tunnel without loss of stability. It is concluded that in the interlayered permeable and impermeable soils encountered, chemical grouting would successfully stabilize the working face. INTRODUCTION An interceptor sewer is currently under construction along the entire length of the west side of Manhattan. When complete, the tunnel will intercept and divert to a treatment plant (also under construction) a daily flow in excess of 200 million gallons per day. Risk is a major factor in all mining activities, arising from many internal and external variables. The authors? research has resulted in a systematic method for the quantification of risk in mining projects (Park, 2012). This research will be presented in a series of papers, this one and two more that will be published on Mining Engineering?s web site, www.me.smenet.com. This paper identifies the variables associated with risk in mining projects, and their effects. The second paper discusses methods of assessing the overall risk associated with those variables, and presents a statistical model based on a survey of 31 experts. The third paper presents an evaluation of the statistical model, using data from previous mining investment decisions in which the authors have been involved. There are several major competing entities, including BHP Billiton, Rio Tinto, Anglo American, Xstrata, Freeport-McMoRan, Chinese government- run companies and Japanese trading companies, that have large foreign holdings, controlling deposits in most of the world?s established and productive mining districts. In general, the mining industry considers the United States, Canada, Australia and the European countries to have good mining investment environments, but because the major companies have already achieved market dominance in those countries, large investments are required there. Newcomers seeking to enter the industry, either as producing companies or as investing partners, often have difficulty breaking into these established markets. Thus newcomers are increasingly turning to new areas like South America and Africa, which are relatively less developed. The competition among businesses to secure a share of the new market is intense, but there are still good investment opportunities. However, because most of the countries in these areas are not well developed, several additional risks are associated with participation in mining projects in those areas.

As the mining industry continues to hire young professionals to supplant the growing number of retirees, a well-developed engineering curriculum, coupled with practical, real-world training, can prepare mining engineering graduates to make meaningful contributions in the industry. Successful companies can be measured not only by their reserve base and annual production but also by their retention of mining engineering graduates with zero to five years of operational experience. My personal experience in the industry during the last five years has been varied and rewarding. The knowledge and experience I have gained have taught me valuable lessons that prepared me for my current role.

Oil from shale has been produced in foreign countries for more than a hundred years; however, except for short-lived, small operations, no commercial quantity of oil shale has yet been produced in the United States. Efforts to develop a viable oil shale process have been underway domestically for many years. At the present time, with the need for energy so urgently upon us, almost a dozen development ventures are underway or planned in Colorado and Utah. Of these several ventures, only Colony Development Operation has completed the development, testing and design of a ready-to-go 50,000 barrel per day com¬mercial project. Colony is a joint venture of the Atlantic Richfield Company, Ashland Oil Company, Shell Oil Company and The Oil Shale Corporation, more commonly known as TOSCO. TOSCO is the exclusive licensor of the TOSCO II retorting process and other oil shale technology, which includes mining, crushing and spent shale disposal techniques. This paper will deal, however, with only the materials handling aspects of the commercial oil shale operation. Oil shale handling for this infant industry is unique in that an understanding of the physical characteristics of the ore and the demands on material handling to the plant must he understood. Colony Development has completed ten years in the research and development of techniques and processes for mining, crushing and retorting raw oil shale and the disposal of spent or processed shale. A great deal has been learned about oil shale, in many cases confirming our intuitive analyses and the work of others, but more specifically we have brought it all together to a point where equipment performance and the specifications have been established and a design for the first commercial plant is now mature.

While there could be as many directions on regulations as there are viewpoints surrounding the asbestos controversy, there are a few basic criteria that generally will influence government thinking, namely: - their definition of the problem to be regulated, - their interpretation of the scientific evidence available to them, and - their sensitivities to the views of, and the implications for, various interest groups in society. Clearly, different assessments of these criteria by various governments will lead to differing regulatory regimes. The consequence, of course, is a patchwork of non-conforming regulations among nations, with all that thin implies for the distortion of international trade and the unsettling of international relations. I would therefore argue that when governments are examining regulatory action, they should explicitly take into account their common interests in stable and cordial international relations, and when possible, efforts should be made to ensure that movement on regulation is at least, in principle, in accord with the general views of the international community.

"After industrial sand has been mined and processed, the finished product is typically loaded into small bags of 45 kg (100 lb) or less, large bulk bags of 454 to 1,361 kg (1,000 to 3,000 lb), or vehicles such as trucks or trains for transport to end users. As the sand is being transferred and loaded, dust can be released into the work environment, potentially exposing workers to respirable crystalline silica. A number of control technologies have been developed and utilized in an effort to reduce dust liberation during loading operations. For bulk loading into trucks or trains, the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) evaluated one of these technologies, the Dust Suppression Hopper (DSH), at two industrial sand processing plants. Results from these case studies show that the DSH reduced airborne respirable dust levels by 39 to 88 percent, depending upon the product size being loaded.IntroductionInhalation of respirable crystalline silica dust can lead to the development of silicosis, a disabling and potentially fatal lung disease. Once contracted, there is no cure for silicosis, so the goal is to prevent the development of the disease by limiting exposure to respirable dust containing crystalline silica at or below the exposure limit of 50 µg/ m3 recommended by the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH, 2002). At industrial silica sand operations, the product contains high levels of crystalline silica, so effective control technologies are needed to minimize the respirable dust exposure of workers.NIOSH, in partnership with the Industrial Minerals Association–North America, published a dust control handbook (NIOSH, 2012) focused upon control technologies for industrial- mineral mining and processing operations. One chapter in this handbook discussed technologies for controlling dust liberated during bulk loading, including telescoping loading spouts, dust collection systems for loading spouts, enclosures for load-out areas and a newer technology known as Dust Suppression Hopper (DSH)."

Few, if any, of the non-ionizing radiation health hazards to be found in either surface or underground coal mining are uniquely different because of their being found in the work environment. Hence, they can be considered generally for their bio-effects on the worker when found in the mining work environment. The same may not be said, however, for the lack of non-ionizing radiation and its bio-effects, particularly as it relates to underground coal mining. The term "non-ionizing radiation" refers to various forms of electromagnetic radiation of wavelengths longer than those of ionizing radiation. As the wavelength gets longer the energy of electromagnetic radiation decreases. Therefore, all non-ionizing forms of radiation have less energy than cosmic, gamma, and X-radiation. In order of increasing wavelength, non-ionizing radiation includes ultraviolet, visible light, infrared, microwave, and radiofrequency radiations. The energy frequency and wavelength range of both the ionizing and non-ionizing electromagnetic forces are shown in Table I. To convert the wavelengths of various radiations to Ångström units, one multiplies millimicrons by ten. In a vacuum, all electromagnetic radiation has the same velocity, namely 3 x 1010 centimeters per second. The natural source of radiant energy here on earth is our sun which emits radiation continuously over a wide spectrum. This radiation on average reaching earth ranges from 290 nm in the ultraviolet range to over 2,000 nm in the infrared range with a maximum intensity of about 480 nm in the visual range. You will note this falls into the visible blue wavelength and accounts for our blue sky and blue ocean and deep water effects. We are all familiar with the fact that the passage of solar radiation through the atmosphere to the earth changes the spectrum considerably because the atmosphere absorbs and scatters many of the sun's rays. The ozone in the upper atmosphere absorbs the shorter ultraviolet wavelengths and water vapor absorbs some of the infrared wavelengths. Smoke, dust particles, gas molecules and water droplets scatter the rays, especially those of shorter wavelengths. In addition to the sun, every gas, liquid or solid object at a temperature above absolute 0° radiates energy. Solid objects emit almost continuous spectra. At low temperatures only radiation of the longer wavelengths in the infrared range is emitted, but as the temperature of the object is increased, more and more of the shorter wavelengths are added. This fact is most readily demonstrated by heating a piece of steel. When a piece of steel reaches a temperature of about 1,700° Fahrenheit, it gives off radiation at the red end of the visible spectrum and appears dull red. As the temperature is further increased, the shorter rays are also emitted, until at about 2,100°F, the metal appears white, due to the emission of wavelengths throughout the entire visible range. Gasses, on the other hand, when heated emit radiant energy only at certain wavelengths, which are characteristic of their chemical structure. This latter fact is of importance in underground coal mining as high intensity gas and vapor lamps are becoming more and more utilized for illumination in underground coal mining. The biologic effect of non-ionizing radiation exposure depends upon the type and duration of exposure and on the amount of absorption by the miner. The effects of this radiant energy on the miner fall into four distinct types: (1) the heating effect of infrared radiation, (2) the effect on the eye of visible radiation, (3) the effects of ultraviolet radiation, and (4) the growing potential effects of the misuse of microwave radiation. Each non-ionizing type of radiation will be considered individually. ULTRAVIOLET RADIATION The sun is the major source of ultraviolet radiation, which is of concern in open pit and surface mining at certain seasons and in certain climes necessitating protection for the surface miners under those conditions; nonetheless, there are some man-made sources such as electric arc lights, welding arcs, plasma jets, and special ultraviolet bulbs for illumination underground that demand surveillance in the underground environment to be aware of whether the miners are at risk above the threshold limit values allowable. Since ultraviolet radiation has little penetrating power, the organs that are affected are the skin and the eyes. Ultraviolet radiation is strongly absorbed by nucleic acids and proteins, and the effects in man are largely chemical rather than thermal. Short-term effects on miners include acute changes in the skin. These are of four types: (a) darkening of pigment, (b) erythema (sunburn), (c) increase in pigmentation (tanning) and (d) changes in cell growth. Ultraviolet radiation also causes acute effects on the tissues of the eye. Overexposure can lead to keratitis, inflammation of the cornea, and conjunctivitis. Long-term effects of ultraviolet exposure include an increase in the rate of ageing of the skin with degeneration of skin tissue and a decrease in elasticity. Late effects of ultraviolet on the eye include the development of cataracts. The most serious chronic effect of ultraviolet exposure is skin cancer. Ultraviolet radiation effects are increased by some industrial materials and drugs. After exposure to such compounds as cresols, the skin is exceptionally sensitive to ultraviolet radiation. Photosensitivity reactions occur after exposure to a variety of other chemicals and drugs including dyes, phenothiazines, sulfonamides, and sulfanylureas. It is widely accepted that particles stabilize flotation froths and that stable froths result in improved flotation performance. Predicting the effect of particle addition on froth stability is, however, challenging. Furthermore, there is currently no technique that allows the prediction of the effect of different flotation reagents on froth stability, without carrying out froth stability experiments.

Over 100 saprolite samples from Turkey Hill Gold Mine, Lumpkin County, Georgia, were analyzed (-80 mesh) for As, Au, and Sb. Maximum values are 16.2 ppm As, 7.9 ppm Au, and 29.1 ppm Sb. Results show trace element content of saprolite varies with topography: ridge top samples show a pronounced decrease in Au and Sb, and to a lesser degree in As, whereas, slope and valley samples have anomalous Au and Sb concentrations, with no discernable pattern for As. Statistical analysis shows strong correlation between Au and Sb and none between Au and As. This study will serve as a model for gold exploration in deeply weathered terrains with variable relief.

The Crandon deposit, located in northern Wisconsin, is a 65.8 million ton Precambrian volcanogenic massive sulfide deposit which averages 1.4% copper and 5.8% zinc. The deposit is classic in origin, mineralogy and shape. Comprehensive understanding of the geology of both the deposit and the project site has been fundamental to the credibility and success of Project feasibility studies and regulatory permit preparation. Mine development in the current investment and regulatory climate requires thorough and timely application of geologic tools. From 1977-1980 geologic activities were focused on the typical objectives of orebody delineation, reserve estimation, depositional geology, and general site investigation. Results from these programs formed the basis for the Project's preliminary feasibility studies. Since 1981 further geologic investigations have provided criteria for project design, site management, and operational permitting. Activities have included mine entry position definition drilling, developing geostatistical reserve modeling, large diameter (150 mm) core drilling for mill pilot samples, rock mecha¬nics testing, and evaluation of the glacial overburden/deposit geohydrology for computer simulation.

Although the first published optimum pit limit design algorithm by Lerchs-Grossmann dates back to 1965, the majority of the open-pit mines in the U.S. has not as yet adopted such a rigorous optimization algorithm. Instead, the floating cone approach initially developed by Kennecott Copper in 1961 is still used today for various reasons. However, shortcomings with the floating cone algorithm, particularly for precious metal deposits with erratic mineral distributions, have provided a renewed interest in optimizing algorithms.

The degree of fragmentation obtained in primary quarry blasting has always been a factor in the speed of digging' the muckpile This paper will discuss a case history of increased production and associated lowered costs from increased fragmentation. The quarry under discussion is fairly new, located in Georgia, and is in the large operation .category. Loading is done by three yard shovels, and, primary crushing by a 48" x 60" haw crusher preceded by a 5' wide feeder. The stone is a hard granite gneiss, of Los Angeles rating 22, and apparent specific gravity is 2.68. The product is shipped to points in that state for railroad ballast, concrete aggregate, and road building stone. Inasmuch as fairly large shovels and a large Jaw were to be utilized, initial drilling and blasting were pointed toward producing fairly large sized muck for this large equipment. This was following a concept somewhat in vogue for some years in the Southeast wherein many large equipment plants would tend towards larger fragmentation, and smaller equipped plants would conversely tend toward attempts at smaller sized rock piles for smaller shovels and crushers.

Spherical oxide particles can be used as mineral fillers, paint pigments, polishing materials and catalysts. They can be prepared using various techniques involving precipitation and spray drying. Melting of particles in a high-temperature flame is a simple technique which produces particles with a high degree of sphericity and high smoothness from non-spherical feed material. In current research the preparation of alumina particles by melting the feed material in a hydrogen- oxygen flame is described. The spherical particles obtained were characterized using scanning electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, energy dispersive spectroscopy, X-ray difiaction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and electrokinetic measurements. The particles pre- pared exhibit a high degree of sphericity and a low level of roughness. The chemical composition of the material after preparation is unchanged, however the crystallographic structure is different. It is suggested that alumina changes from pure a-alumina to a mixture of different transitional forms. Changes in the electrokinetic behavior were also observed for alumina which can be attributed to the strong dehydration of the oxide surface and/or change in the crystallographic structure. Also, the possible accommodation of trace amount of impurities in the surface zone during melting cannot be ignored.
