A mathematical model is presented which allows the free or hindered settling velocity to he calculated for any size or- shape particle in any fluid, and at any percent solids up to the maximum. The validity of the model is supported by comparing calculated velocities (or viscosities) with measured values for 1073 data points contained in 80 sets of data encompassing a range of Reynolds’ numbers, from 0.002 to 770.000. The average error was 0.69%, with an average standard deviation of 6.65%. The derivation of the model is too lengthy to include in this paper, which will specifically present the application of the model to the free settling of minerals and spheres, prediction of the friction factor in wind tunnel tests, the viscosity of suspensions of spheres, the hindered settling of mono-sized spheres and closely sized minerals, and the settling of large spheres in suspensions of small spheres.

Previous testing was performed by researchers at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) to improve longwall dust control using underside shield sprays with a longwall directional spray system. This testing provided encouraging results toward respirable dust exposure reductions for longwall personnel, achieving as high as 99% dust reduction at some sampling locations along the longwall personnel walkway. Additional laboratory testing was conducted to test these underside shield sprays in conjunction with a shearer-clearer spray system located on the longwall shearer body. The purpose of this testing was to determine if the underside shield sprays interacted positively or negatively with the shearerclearer sprays. Results from this testing indicate that while the shearerclearer system influences where the respirable dust particles are directed, underside shield sprays can still lower respirable dust exposure for longwall personnel.

Sulphur as an element has been used for centuries. The technique of storing, handling and transporting it in its various forms has changed through the years. Freeport Sulphur Company, a division of Freeport Minerals Company, has produced sulphur since 1912. The first storing and transporting of this product as a liquid began in 1947. Significant environmental problems occurred in the handling of solid sulphur in the late fifties and early sixties. Since the sulphur WAS produced in the liquid form and the major customers used it in the liquid form, it became obvious that a liquid transportation system was the solution. The liquid sulphur delivery eliminated the dusty and hazardous handling problems and the contamination of the sulphur by dirt, acid, moisture and other materials. The remelting by the customer to use the sulphur is thusly eliminated with a savings in energy. In addition, this change in the mode of handling permitted a broad development of new sulphur mines in the marshy coastal area of Louisiana and offshore in the Gulf of Mexico.

The practical and effective pulp distributor here presented is believed to be of a completely new and innovative design. It was developed at the San Nicolas Plant of the Marcona Mining Company in Peru, where it has been thoroughly plant tested using iron ore slurries of a particularly abrasive nature. It has proven to be superior to the apparatus originally installed, or to any observed in operation elsewhere. In plant practice the capacity and efficiency of many process units such as screens, magnetic separators, and jigs are strongly affected by the loading pattern, and for better results the flow of pulp must be proportioned across the receiving lip in equal quantities per unit width. The distributors originally installed on the drum magnetic separators in San Nicolas proved to be unsatisfactory, and several trial modifications failed to show any improvement. As is usually the case, feed rates were being steadily increased, and appreciable losses to tailings resulted. A check of the distributors on the market discloses no reasonable substitute, so efforts were directed toward devising an entirely new type. Required was a positive type of action which would guarantee that the pulp flow be spread equally along the length of the drum. Discussion As indicated, the motivation for development was simple necessity. The plant in San Nicolas crushes, grinds, and concentrates magnetic iron ores of a particularly abrasive nature, and depends largely on magnetic separation to obtain a marketable product. Feed to the numerous drum magnetic cobbers and finishers varies from rod mill discharge at a nominal minus ten mesh to a ball mill fine grind of seventy percent minus three hundred and twenty-five mesh. The Cienega project, now under construction by Penoles group, is located in the mountains of the State of Durango, Mexico. The gold and silver deposits are found in the 4-km long system of veins, which will be extracted by underground methods. The planned 1000 tpd process plant will contain a countercurrent cyanide circuit for oxide ore and a flotation circuit for sulfide ore. Considerable resources have been devoted to development of infrastructure in the isolated location, as well as for the mitigation of environmental impacts. Startup is scheduled for the third quarter of 1994.

The introduction of continuous mining machines in the late 1940's prompted the mining industry to reassess shuttle car batch-type haulage. Between place changes, the continuous miner could cut and load coal on a nearly continuous basis, but after loading a shuttle car, the high-capacity machine had to wait until the second shuttle car came inby and spotted itself under the miner tail boom. Thus, the wait-for-shuttle-car delay periods became the new bottleneck for increased coal production from the mine section. Recent studies have shown that nearly 25 pct of the continuous miner cycle time is consumed by delays in the haulage system, usually waiting for shuttle cars. Computer simulations of a face operation indicate that up to a 45 pct increase in coal production may be realized through the use of a continuous haulage system, assuming of course that the outby haulage system can handle this increased capacity. Coincidently, there are recent claims by some mines using continuous face haulage of a production increase of 45 pct compared with shuttle car haulage. These documented production records, computer simulations, and common sense indicate the potential of continuous face haulage in underground coal. The late 1960's and early 1970's saw several mining machinery manufacturers market mobile bridge carrier and piggyback bridge conveyor continuous haulage systems for use in underground coal mines. These systems have shown limited potential in some mines and outstanding success in others. It appears that no one system can be universally applicable to all underground mining conditions; thus, the Bureau of Mines has conducted extensive research over the last few years to investigate different types of continuous haulage systems for use in high and low coal seams that will advance the state of the art.

Following the recession of 2001, restrained consumer spending, declines in domestic manufacturing and industrial output, and increased unemployment led to a lack-luster year in the domestic economy. In 2002, the U.S. real gross domestic product (GPD) grew only 2.4%. Significant production declines in the U.S. metals industry were registered by copper, lead and zinc producers. Steel producers, despite a slight improvement in shipments, continued to face strong foreign competition, higher energy costs and lower prices for their products. Homebuilding and other domestic construction sectors— major consumers of nonmetallic mineral products such as cement, brick, glass and stone — remained strong enough to help raise the output of industrial mineral materials slightly above 2001 levels. A strong U.S. dollar relative to other national currencies continued to weaken the competitive stance of U.S. metal and non-metal mineral materials companies alike against foreign producers in markets at home and abroad.

Semicontinuous-flow, multistage biooxidation experiments of a Chinese refractory, high-sulfur gold concentrate were conducted with different pulp densities for gold recovery. The maximum iron, sulfur and arsenic oxidation rates of 90.0, 88.8 and 96.4 percent, respectively, were obtained in the experiments with 5 percent pulp density. The highest gold and silver recoveries of 96.1 and 68.9 percent, respectively, were achieved by cyanidation. The negative effect of high pulp density on biooxidation was related to the decrease of free and adsorbed cell concentrations with increasing pulp density. The data of iron oxidation from the semicontinuous biooxidation experiments were best fitted by a shrinking core model in which the chemical reaction controlled the rate. The dissolution kinetics of sulfur and arsenic were therefore analyzed by a shrinking core model in which the internal diffusion controlled the bioleaching rates. For the quantitative description of biooxidation efficiency, two parameters — mass dissolution rate and volume dissolution rate — were proposed. In the first stage, the mass dissolution rates of minerals were negatively correlated while the volume dissolution rates were positively correlated with the actual pulp density. The iron and sulfur mass dissolution rates decreased with increasing actual pulp densities in the third and fourth stage, while linear increasing relationships between the volume dissolution rates of minerals and the actual pulp density were observed from the second to fourth stage. The highest mass dissolution rates of minerals were obtained in the first stage with 5 percent pulp density. The highest volume dissolution rates of minerals were obtained in the first stage with 15 percent pulp density. Compared to the volume dissolution rate, the mass dissolution rate was more intuitive to reflect the negative effect of high pulp density on biooxidation efficiency.

The world's largest fluidized bed steam generator located at Rivesville, West Virginia is currently undergoing initial operation. This unit is designed to generate 3708 kg/s (300,000 Ib/hr) equivalent to 30 MWe of superheated steam while firing coal in a fluidized bed of limestone. Coal was first fired in this unit in December, 1976 and start up operation is progressing.

The Limberg III PSP is one of the European projects that addresses the implementation of the UN SDGs. The challenge of the project is the construction of a 770 m long pressure shaft to be excavated with a TBM at an inclination of 42°.

The Stillwater Mining Company, a partnership of The Pittsburg & Midway Coal Mining Co. and Manville Corporation, began commercial production of flotation concentrates from the western hemispheres' only primary platinum palladium deposit at Nye, Montana in March 1937. In the fall of 1987 an integrated pilot plant testing campaign of electric furnace smelling and oxygen? blown converting confirmed the feasibility of further upgrading to semi? refined matte or 'white metal". In the summer of 1990 the production smelter was brought on-line at Columbus, Montana. This paper describes the technology transfer from the pilot to the production smelter. Emphasis is placed on flowsheet development and the scale factors between the test and production furnaces and gas cleaning plants. The metallurgical results of the pilot plant and of the early months of production of the commercial works are also compared.

INTRODUCTION The decontamination of the former Shiprock uranium millsite and the interim stabilization of its tailings piles began in March 1974, and ended in June 1978. Personnel monitoring for whole body gamma ray exposure was conducted for selected individuals working at the mill site throughout most of this period. The millsite and exposure conditions are briefly described to develop a basis for interpretation of the exposure data. Millsite The Shiprock uranium millsite is located in the community of Shiprock, New Mexico on a bench overlooking the San Juan River (Figure 1). Both Shiprock and the millsite are located on the Navajo Indian Reservation. About 1.5 million tons of tailings were produced on the millsite during its operation from 1954 to 1963. The tailings were pulped with waste process fluids and water, and discharged to form two tailings piles. The piles (ponds, dams) were formed with earth starter dikes and the dikes were then raised using the separated sand fraction of the tailings. The slime fraction of the tailings were discharged into the diked impoundment. The mill was shut down and partially dismantled before the lease expired in 1973, and the remainder of the mill and tailings reverted back to the Navajo Tribe which was the lessor. Portions of the millsite were then occupied by the Navajo Engineering and Construction Authority (NECA), a tribal enterprise. In addition to its regular activities, NECA established an on-site training school for heavy equipment operators. The trainees principally used the south tailings pile as a practice area and spread the tailings into a 10 hectare row of raffinate ponds located along the southwest side of the millsite. Overall, the training activities inceased the effective area of the tailings piles from 20 to 35 hectares. Another 56 hectares were contaminated with wind and water eroded tailings. Exposure Conditions Persons decontaminating a millsite may be subject to radiation exposures from several sources. Only whole body gamma exposures are discussed in this report. These exposures are arbitrarily divided into three levels: high, intermediate, and low. The levels are related to areas in which the decontamination work was being done and have no connotation concerning imminent hazards. High exposures would result when persons were working with raw tailings, and intermediate exposures would occur when persons were working in the ore storage and mill yards. Low exposures would result from working in areas where surface contamination exists from wind and water erosion. [ ] The millsite and its contaminated environs were divided into major areas to facilitate the decontamination work (Figure 2). Disc Cutter Wear is influenced by several geological and technical factors and excessive wear can have a major impact on the excavation efficiency of Tunnel Boring Machines (TBM). Disc cutter replacement events cause a disruption to the construction schedule and costs, and should be minimized throughout the project to the extent possible. A well-executed cutterhead inspection and maintenance plan can help mitigate abrupt cutterhead interventions and reduce its effect on project schedule and cost. This paper examines cutterhead inspection and disc cutter replacement events as well as subsequent wear data recorded in the first 7km of the 10.3 km long, 6.3 m diameter Coxwell Sanitary Bypass Tunnel (CBT) project in Toronto, Ontario. The CBT alignment is mainly through Georgian Bay Formation shale.

Demonstrating aquifer restoration is an essential component of regulatory approval needed to mine uranium, copper, and other minerals by in-situ recovery (ISR). A PHREEQC geochemical model provided a useful means of forecasting the time for restoration and predicting future groundwater quality following low pH mining at Strata Energy’s Ross ISR Project in northeast Wyoming. The model simulated groundwater quality at three phases of the process: at the end of mining; during restoration; and post- restoration. The model utilized the one-dimensional reactive transport and dual porosity features of PHREEQC. Mineral surface ion-exchange, dissolution/precipitation reactions, and adsorption processes were simulated to estimate water quality as the pH was shifted from circumneutral to acidic during mining and back to neutral during restoration. The model results showed that cost-effective management of mine water could meet regulatory requirements. Additionally, the model was used to interpret results from a field trial and inform operational decisions. The predictive approach and geochemical understanding developed have application in assessing aquifer restoration for other ISR projects.

INTRODUCTION Technologic progress depends on new and innovative ideas, the practical application of these ideas, and finally as the technology is developed and demonstrated, the engineering improvement or replacement of existing capabilities. In many areas the new ideas, although known, are not immediately put to practical use in all applicable fields. Good technologic forecasting for research and development within the excavation field coupled with adequate technology transfer is necessary to ensure timely application of innovative ideas to remove bottlenecks in the total system. The purposes of this paper are (1) to show the potential ability of technologic forecasting to meet future demands in rapid excavation through the acceleration of excavation rates by research and development in several related technologic fields, (2) to provide a brief review of the initial development of the ARPA (Advanced Research Projects Agency) Rock Mechanics and Rapid Excavation Program, (3) to draw attention to the research projects completed or underway in the FY 1970-1972 ARPA program and explain where information or program results can be obtained, (4) to summarize the progress and accomplishments of applied research contracts in the rock disintegration element of the ARPA program, and (5) to discuss the research directions planned for the remaining years of the program. Capital investments are made for a variety of reasons, ranging from providing incremental capacity at existing operations to developing and implementing new technologies intended to radically improve a company's capabilities. These projects generate very different business opportunities and create value in distinctive ways. For incremental improvements, the capital budgeting process assures at least a loose fit between short-term goals and readily available resources. However, the criteria used to evaluate capital projects often prevent a company from committing to more aggressive goals, which lie beyond the firm's current abilities or resources. Such projects may not have clearly identifiable future cash flows, and the degree of interaction with other projects and the nature of the risk incurred may be difficult to estimate. Additionally, by focusing only on quantifiable benefits, the budgeting process often fails to recognize "soft" improvements such as increased operating flexibility or new knowledge generated by such projects. By rejecting these projects, the capital budgeting process may actually harm the company's future competitive position.

Large-scale equipment can reduce both capital and operating costs for concentrators. Large semiautogemus (SAG) mills can be effectively utilized in big mills but they must be kept fully loaded to tab advantage of their great potential. With varying hardness ores, controlling throughput is difficult and careful design must take this into consideration. A variable speed drive on large primary semiautogemus mills can overcome this problem to a considerable degree. This paper provides a base case using standard accepted technology of two wound rotor single speed 4476 kW (6000 hp) motors to drive the primary SAG mills of a hypothetical 36,364 t/d (40,000 stpd) typical porphyry copper mill. One other fixed speed drive will be described and jive variable speed drive configurations will be reviewed. Capital costs for the entire grinding circuit, from crusher product to flotation feed, were developed for the base case and each of the alternatives. A technical evaluation comparing the advantages and disadvantages of each drive is presented.

As most of us have learned through prior and often frustrating experience, anyone proposing to construct a new or expanded mining-ore processing facility must first contend with a rather complex array of environmental laws and permitting regulations administered by a number of different Federal, State and local agencies. At our lost count, there were about 55 federal enactments affecting base and precious metals projects. Applicable State and local laws will usually increase that number significantly. The time and costs associated with complying with all these various regulatory programs usually constitutes one of the major areas of uncertainty in the development of a proposed project. There are many in the mining industry who firmly believe that these environmental regulation and permit programs necessarily causes significant delays and increased costs in the development of a project. This belief, unfortunately, is probably a result of a basic misunderstanding of how the environmental permitting and regulatory system actually works.

"INTRODUCTION This report summarizes a research about mines which are transitioning from surface to underground mines. It is a guide to make strategic decision in these increasing amount of mines. Capital and operating costs are linked with major strategic decisions in the exploitation of an ore body. This is the reason to analyze costs related to this transitioning world trend. There are multiple reasons for transitioning from Open-Pit (OP) to Underground (UG) mining. The primary economic incentive for going UG is that the cost per unit of ore from OP mining eventually exceeds that from UG extraction. This is due to the excessive amount of waste that must be extracted when the depth of the pit increases. In addition, the reduced footprint of UG operations contributes to diminish the environmental impact on the surface. Furthermore, it becomes more difficult to find new, easily accessible ore deposits. Then, a cost model helps to guide strategic decisions in the transition from OP-to-UG mines. Objectives • Propose a methodology to guide strategic decisions in the transition from OP to UG mining. • Create an integrated cost model based on existing OP and UG individual cases. • Identify and characterize a group of mines transitioning from OP to UG. • Analyze operating and capital costs of a particular transitioning from OP to UG mine. MAIN CONCEPTS Open Pit Mining (OP) The main decisions in OP mines are: Cut-off grade, Stripping Ratio (SR), equipment size, stockpiling, pushback sequencing and processing capacity. The stripping ratio is measured as the tonnage of waste required to be removed to reach and extract one tonne of ore. The material extracted from an OP exploitation can be classified as waste and ore. This classification depends on the cut-off grade. The cut-off grade indicates the minimum amount of material with economic value in a block. The waste from the mine is going to the waste dump and the ore is going to stockpiles where will be store and then going to the processing plant (leaching or concentrator). The waste of this process is going to the tailing pond big pools. And the product is sell in the market. Another important issue is the mining capacity which is going to define the investment in mining equipment. Underground Mining (UG) The first decision to be made in order to open an underground mine is selecting the mining method. Caving methods are the more productive and have lower operating costs. There are three caving methods: Block Caving (BC), Panel Caving (BC) and Sublevel Caving (BC). The access development could be an horizontal adit or a straight or downspiral decline. A shaft could be used for inclined or vertical access. Other key issues are: equipment capacity, cut-off grade and production sequencing."

Three years ago, at a reception given during the Steel Institute meeting in New York, I heard the remark, "A new formula must be found for foreign investment." This was immediately following the takeover of U. S. Steel's Matilde operation in Bolivia. Recently, at the World Mining Congress in Lima, Peru, the subject of foreign investment was still a lively topic of conversation. The nationalization of the copper mines in Chile and recent trends in the "Third World" have made all but a few extremely wary of investment anywhere other than in the ?stable? countries. Now, the fallibility of this philosophy has been demonstrated in such "stable" countries as Canada, Australia, and Ireland. Yet, nationalization is not new to us. The events in Chile were classified as disastrous to the affected companies, but so were the effects of nationalization to the majors in Bolivia in 1952. Mexicanization of the mining industry in Mexico was considered impractical by many. Now, those who accepted it are finding it to be workable.
