Lead ions that originate from galena during the processing of complex sulfide ores migrate onto the surfaces of sphalerite and iron sulfide minerals. This results in poor selectivity during differential flotation. Generally, in sulfide ore processing, the lead-activated minerals float in the Cu/Pb rougher circuit. The surface lead complicates the zinc flotation circuit by lowering the concentrate grade. The effect of lead in the differential flotation of sphalerite from Cu-Pb-Zu and Pb-Zu ores is discussed. Plant and laboratory-test data are interpreted by determining the surface compositions of individual grains of sphalerite and iron sulfide particles. For the first time, surface compositions were determined by using laser-ionization mass spectrometry (LIMS) and time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (TOF-SIMS). Cationic and cationic species on the surface were analyzed to elucidate the phenomena. It was proven that these new techniques are very useful in understanding the basic mechanisms of a sulfide mineral-flotation system.

INTRODUCTION The work of the metallurgical engineer engaged in developing a leach, solvent extraction electro- winning process usually begins in the laboratory and generally proceeds via pilot plant testing before finally resulting in a commercial operation. The path leading to the development of the eventual process will involve a test program on leaching in order to derive information on the amenability of the copper-bearing material to acid dissolution, under various conditions. Commonly in North America the leach process of choice is either dump or heap leaching but it may also be in-situ leaching or the treatment of mine waste- waters and bleed streams. In the past, agitation and vat leaching have also been included in the list of options. Currently the economics of copper production dictate that only material of mineralogy and grade, capable of being leached without prior milling, will lead to a viable process. This is not necessarily true in other parts of the world where grades are higher and milling costs lower and therefore this paper con- fronts all the techniques available to the metallurgical engineer in terms of the evaluation of the solvent extraction process. Understanding the objectives of a laboratory and pilot plant evaluation of a solvent extraction route is important and these are described in some detail in this paper. Of at least equal importance is understanding limitations of such a test program and this aspect of process development is also discussed with reference to the kind of equipment and experimental practices that have been shown to produce results consistent with the objectives. WHERE TO BEGIN? At the inception of a project much information is developed on the variables of the leach process and indeed in some instances the type of leach that best suits the ore to be treated is the subject of intense investigation (Wadsworth 1983). The decision to treat the leach solution by solvent extraction focuses attention on the selection of the extractant most suited to the nature of the chemical composition of the solution. A laboratory screening program will probably need to be arranged in order to assist in narrowing the options and the following is suggested for this initial screening. Selection of a Representative Leach Solution This is preferably obtained from leaching a representative sample of the ore under conditions likely to pertain in the commercial leach circuit. As the conceptualized circuit flow sheet will undoubtedly involve the recycle of aqueous solutions via the leach, then it is desirable to know the nature of and the likely level of the impurity ions in the solution as well as the concentration of copper. The other most important parameter that is required is the free acid (Anon, Acorga Analytical Method) content of the solution. As a rule of thumb, it is always true that recovery across SX is maximized as the pH of the leach solution rises. Whilst a high pH may be desirable for SX recovery, it is not always desirable for the pH (or more correctly, the free acid) of the leach to rise too high. The working range, therefore, tends to be between 1.5-2.5 pH. At an early stage in process development it is likely that a number of ill-defined conditions will exist, making it difficult to decide on typical leach conditions in which case the screening tests should be carried out using a synthetic leach solution prepared from laboratory chemicals. In doing this the copper and free content should be carefully controlled along with the appropriate addition of major impurity ions as their sulphate salts. This work applies the definition of "separation function" already introduced in the paper presented at the XVIII IMPC. This 'function" (defined for a certain size distribution after comminution of an ore) refers to the recovery distribution of a mineralogical species in a product made up of all the particles having at least a given content of that species. Many tests would be required to determine the liberation function for each mineralogical species, particularly for complex ores. Several stages of comminution would need to be examined and the mineralogical composition of the particles of each grain size class would need to be analyzed for each process step. A quick and dirty method is shown for obtaining the "separation function". It is based on the processing of data from topological maps of polished and/or thin representative sections of ore. By superimposing grids of different sizes over these maps and with appropriate combinations of mesh sizes, it is possible to simulate the grain size distributions linked to different stages of comminution and then evaluate the mineralogical composition of each grain. The procedure is carried out full automatically and can simulate a complete treatment circuit, imposing cut-off grades for the products at each separation phase. It is also possible to predict the results of treatment processes that involve grinding phases. The procedure has been successfully applied to complex ores containing several useful components.

Introduction There continues to be a large economic opportunity associated with improving process performance through advanced process control systems within the minerals industry. The basis for this opportunity lies in the inherently low efficiencies of many of the unit operations found in mineral processing plants as well as the continual variation that is present in the ores being processed. The ageless target of such control systems is improved recoveries and concentrate grades, higher processing rates and lower unit costs. Many plants are enjoying the benefits of modem, well functioning process control systems but few if any have achieved plant-wide optimization in an economical sense. As new process modeling and control technologies, such as neural networks, continue to evolve and develop, the potential for plant- wide optimization is becoming a closer reality. Neural network technology appears to have a significant potential in the general field of process control and control of mineral processing operations. Neural networks are an emerging technology that have been evolving out of the study of biological systems since the early 1940's. The first software simulation of neural computing networks was reported in 1956 by Nathanial Rochester of IBM Research during the first conference on artificial intelligence which was sponsored by the Rockefeller Foundation. Neural Networks Neural networks can be considered to be a class of computer program that perform their problem solving functions based on a rudimentary model of the human brain and how it solves problems. Traditional computer programs and even computers themselves solve problems or process data sequentially and in a deterministic manner. The human brain, on the other hand, processes data and solves problems in a massively parallel fashion. We think of computers normally in terms of having a single processing unit, sometimes a co-processor to assist in certain activities such as mathematical functions or communications, bytes of memory, processing speed and program/data storage size.

Nutrien has six potash mines in Saskatchewan and has been proactive in maintaining the integrity of their tailings facilities through ongoing assessment, design, operation, inspection, and monitoring. Nutrien commissioned a system inventory and semi-quantitative risk analysis (SQRA) of all dikes to further environmental stewardship at their potash facilities. The inventory assessed nearly 100 dikes; each dike was rated according to a probability and consequence factor and assigned a risk score. The risk scores were used to develop a risk matrix for each of the six sites and risk-response actions for each dike and segment. The inventories and SQRAs will help each site assess priorities for investigation and risk mitigation, if necessary. The study results will also help Nutrien refine corporate wide tailings governance standards and demonstrate compliance with various governance regulatory obligations.

A high-altitude (9,500-ft [2,900-m]) historic underground copper mine in Wyoming discharges neutral but copper-laden water into a pristine creek. Under a Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA) deferral agreement, the Wyoming Abandoned Mine Land Program performed site characterization and treatment studies in preparation for reclamation of the site. An integral part of the project included addressing the needs of a variety of interested and affected parties, including property owners, local populations, government agencies, and the media. This paper discusses an overall approach and specific methods employed to enlist public support for the project as well as some of the successes and failures experienced.

This paper presents and compares characteristics of aggregate / quarrying software packages currently on the market, each product having strengths beneficial under different circumstances. To be successful, the developers must confront the limitations of their packages under a variety of situations, address the unique characteristics of the aggregate industry, and pay particular attention to the applicability of their products in real situations.

More than two thousand abandoned mines within the Animas watershed in Southwestern Colorado are being prioritized for remediation by the Animas River Stakeholders Group (ARSG). Phased collection and assessment of information progressed from large scale to site specific. Prioritization was based on existing or potential environmental impact and technical feasibility of remediation as measured by dissolved Cd, Cu, and/or Zn in the discharge; indicators of habitat degradation; aquatic life in streams; cumulative impacts at the point of compliance; cost effectiveness; treatiblity/feasibility; and cultural and historic preservation.

Sampling and subsequent geostatistical structural analysis is being carried out on the Bunker Hill Superfund site in northern Idaho's Silver Valley. This paper reports on the findings and methodology used in the initial sampling campaign which had the goal of determining an appropriate sampling grid design, spacing and protocol. Emphasis is placed on those characteristics, of mine wastes which are unique and require special consideration when applying geostatistical analysis. This study represents one of the first applications of geostatistical techniques to the problem of hazardous mining waste site characterization. Remediation of Superfund projects similar to the one described herein represents opportunity as well as liability for the mining industry.

New underground coal mines have become increasingly expensive to open. A simple drift mine producing a raw coal product can cost as much as $50 million while a new shaft mine producing a washed coal product can cost up to $200 million. As a result, few if any speculative new mines are constructed. Normally, a long term coal supply agreement is needed to justify new mine projects. Negotiating a supply agreement prior to production start is difficult. Pricing must be based on estimated rather than historic costs and coal quality must be estimated from core hole samples versus actual shipments. Further in todays competitive coal markets, there is little margin for error in either price or quality.

From experience and scientific references it is known that during information processing, the following error types are transmitted: technical, analogy errors and method errors. For decreasing the value of these errors, especially of the method ones, old algorithms should be perfected and new ones should be developed for processing, interpreting and achieving the graphical layout by means of automatic data processing. In this respect, we propose a new deposit model based on numeric mathematical modelling which requires the use of automatic data processing. The utilization of the numeric model of the proposed deposit, allows the obtaining of the following advantages: • the model is used for any deposit form; • it is used for the calculation of deposit resources (volume, weight, and content); • it is used in design due to the facility of obtaining sections through the deposits area; • it eliminates at "0" the errors of graphical data transcription; • the use of the model imposes a uniform geological research; • the algorithm is transposed in a package of programs.

Unsegregated pyritic uranium mill tailings from Elliot Lake, Ontario, with and without limestone amendment, were subjected to column leaching experiments for the purposes of predicting the onset of acidic drainage and the magnitude of metal and radionuclide release under various treatment and control strategies. The unamended tailings produced acidic drainage after approximately one and a half year. The tailings mixed with various grain-sized limestone did not produce acidic drainage during the study period. The tailings consist essentially of quartz, K-feldspar, muscovite and pyrite. The unsegregated tailings amended with very fine limestone displayed the least amounts of pyrite loss whereas those without limestone amendment had the greatest pyrite losses. Predicted onset of acid generation varied from 16 to 75 years for the top sections and in most cases greater than 100 years for bottom sections of the unsegregated tailings with limestone amendments. Unsegregated tailings mixed with fine- and very fine-grained limestone proved to be the most effective in controlling or delaying the onset of acidic drainage under unsaturated conditions.

On longwall coal faces in some Japanese coal mines more than half of the air coming from the intake gate road flows into the caved goaf and the air heated by the hot waste rocks in the goaf comes out through the latter half of the face. This still constitutes a major heat problem in spite of the introduction of gate and face air coolers. Therefore, in order to establish effective measures to improve the environ- mental conditions, it is essential to obtain information pertaining to the air flow pattern on the face as affected by the goaf conditions and the air flow regulating measures taken at the intake side of the face. Experiments for this purpose were carried out using a coal face model. The model was reduced to a scale of 1110th of the real face measuring 100 m long and 2.2 m high, equipped with self-advancing supports. The model design was also conceived to accomodate eventual modifications of the space of the caved goaf as imposed by the actual conditions.

Froth flotation is widely used for separating particulate materials from one another in aqueous media. The basis of this important separation process is to control the hydrophobicity of particles. However, it is difficult to predict the kinetics of flotation based on contact angle (?), which is a thermodynamic property. A solution to this difficulty would be to develop a relationship between ? and the gradient of the hydrophobic forces across the solid-liquid and bubble-liquid interfaces. Such information can be obtained using the surface force apparatus (SFA), the atomic force microscope (AFM), and the thin film balance (TFB). The present communication reviews the results of the measurements conducted using these methods, and offers a methodology for deriving a rate equation for bubble-particle interactions

One aspect of long-range mine planning in an open-pit mine is first to define the ultimate pit limit, i.e., the projected size and shape of the pit at the end of its life. This chapter is concerned with various techniques that are currently in use today in determining the ultimate pit limits using the computer. Prior to the early 1960's, open-pit limits analyses were entirely performed manually. This manual technique has been well explained by Soderberg and Rausch in Surface Mining (1968). Soderberg and Rausch also explain clearly the need for establishing the ultimate pit limits in long-range mine planning, i.e., location of surface facilities, dumps, etc. Consequently, the need for ultimate pit limit design will not be reiterated here. Nor will the definitions of the most commonly accepted terminologies such as break-even stripping ratio, economic cutoff grade, ultimate and working slope angles, preproduction stripping, etc. be repeated here. Briefly, the objective of the ultimate pit limit design (which is also frequently referred to as pit design in short) is to determine the projected final pit limits of an ore body and its associated projected grade and tonnage, which will maximize some prespecified economic criteria while satisfying practical operational requirements.

The N20 to N25 Tunnel (basic) segment was the second tunnel contract awarded for construction by The PB/MK Team. This project embodied 3.9 km (2.4 miles) of tunnel and was located within the northwest quadrant of the 86.9 km (54 mile) long main collider ring. The contract required the excavation and initial support of a 54.3 m (178 vlf) deep ventilation shaft, a connecting horseshoe shaped Adit and TBM starter tunnel and 3,865 m (12,680 If) long main collider tunnel with a 4.3 m (14 ft) minimum finished diameter. This paper discusses the construction methods, equipment utilized and the production achieved in the construction of the ventilation shaft, connecting adits and the main collider tunnel.

The distribution of material passing a screen, or a set of screens, is described by the equation [ ] where p = the probability that a single particle will pass the screen on a single presentation k = number of layers of screen cloth n = distance from head of screen expressed as number of screen openings. This model can be used to predict the performance of conventional screening operations (i.e., k = 1) as well as the so-called "statistical screening" operations. Using this technique, in which multiple identical layers of screen cloth are employed, screening can be carried out at a finer size than is possible with conventional techniques with no loss of separation efficiency.

"Feather edging"-a major source of injury and fatal accidents in Australia, South Africa and USA, refers to a phenomenon where the roof, at the goaf edge, falls as a thin wafer of rock often suddenly, over-riding conventional timber breakerlines. It may run down and affect adversely a working bord at distances of 15 metres or more from the goaf edge. Feather edging typically occurs in relatively massive, strong roof strata such as sandstone or conglomerate. This paper presents the results of a mine trial where a concentrated row of fully grouted bolts were able to resist the feather edging in the first comprehensive, monitored trial in an Australian pillar ('total') extraction coal mine.

This paper presents the results of an extensive study concerning a series of roof falls in a room-and-pillar coal mine located in West Virginia. Three dimensional finite element modeling was employed to identify the possible causes for the roof falls. The effectiveness of possible roof control measures for alleviating or eliminating the adverse roof conditions is analyzed, discussed, and compared. The best mining alternatives are recommended. It has been found that large overburden depth and typical roof geology are the major reasons for the roof falls. Angle bolting may not solve the problem encountered in the mine studied. Changing the mine layout currently used in the mine appears to be the best alternative. The recommended pillar size and entry width which will eliminate the problem completely are 90 ft. x 90 ft. and 14 it., respectively.

The use of heavy media organic solvents to recover coal from its attendant gangue is hardly new. DuPont built a pilot plant using pentachloroethane in 1936 at Weston Coal Company, Weston Breaker, Shenandoah, Pennsylvania. That's almost half a century ago. Since that time, it has become common practice to utilize similar classes of chemicals in laboratory separations of coal samples. It is the objective of this paper to discuss some specific separations on both pilot and laboratory scale on samples representing different classifications of coal. These separations have been carried out on coarse (+4 M), middling (4 x 20 M), and fine (-20 M) coal samples. The coal samples tested include Pennsylvania anthracite; Pennsylvania, Indiana and Colorado bituminous; Wyoming sub-bituminous; and Texas lignite. Other chlorinated solvents were used to vary the specific gravity of separation.
