This paper covers several points of interest to mine engineers and planners involved in evaluating or conducting geostatistical coal reserve estimates. In particular, the ability to optimize borehole drilling locations and minimize drilling costs is addressed. Also discussed is the concept of confidence intervals for estimated coal characteristics obtained through geostatistical estimates and their importance in decision-making for mine planners. Finally, a discussion is presented on how geostatistics enables identification of invalid data points and actually forces strict attention to data editing and proper geologic interpretation.

A nickel-copper sulphide concentrate was treated in a pilot plant at Warren Spring Laboratory during 1961, by a hydrometallurgical roast-leach- solvent extraction process devised to cleanly separate the metal values, and produce acid sulphate liquors containing the metals. It is shown that 86 percent of the nickel and 95 percent of the copper could be leached from the calcine, after a sulphatizing roast on finely ground flotation concentrate. Iron was removed from the leach liquor by limestone neutralization with a small loss of values. Copper and nickel were separated by solvent extraction with naphthenic acid in kerosene after partial neutralization of the iron-free liquors with ammonium hydroxide. Hydrogen sulphide and chlorine were used to remove zinc (and residual copper) and cobalt impurities respectively. The recovery of pure copper and pure nickel, by electrowinning, from the acidic solvent extract strip liquors finally produced, appears technically feasible.

This paper describes the development of a trim blast design to improve the stability of a final pit wall. Description is given of the effects of rock characteristics, rock type, and pit plans on the blast design. Currently, six benches have been mined with trim blasting. A more stable final wall has resulted and the successful program has reduced mining costs over an extended time period. Low cost blast monitoring and field observation were used to determine peak particle velocity and blast damage. Using criteria developed from this relationship, trim blasts were designed and evaluated.

The brines from the sub-surface of the Laguna del Rey dry lake are pumped to Química del Rey, S. A. plant, where they are cooled in adiabatic crystallizers precipitating sodium sulphate decahydrate. This salt is dehydrated in multiple effect evaporators and dried in rotary kilns producing high purity anhydrous sodium sulphate. The spent brines from the sodium sulphate operation are concentrated in solar ponds, precipitating astrakanite and leaving a brine with a higher concentration of magnesium ions. This brine is treated with calcium chloride solution to eliminate the remainder of sulphates, leaving a solution of magnesium chloride ready for the manufacture of refractory grade magnesium oxide or periclase. The magnesium chloride is reacted with dolime to produce magnesium hidroxide which is washed, filtered, and calcined to produce soft burned magnesium oxide, which is briquetted and dead burned to produce the periclase.

Galvanic contact, occurring between electricall y conducting minerals in flotation pulps, may affect the nature of mineral surfaces and influence their floatabilities. Rest potential and galvanic current measurements were made on an electrode combination of pyrite and pyrrhotite under nitrogen, air and oxygen aeration conditions, and the results were correlated with their oxygen-consuming characteristics and flotation behaviors. The galvanic contact improved the floatability of pyrrhotite, but adversely affected that of pyrite. Auger electron spectroscopy, x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy indicated that the formation of hydroxide or oxide and sulfate species of iron on pyrrhotite decreased whereas that on pyrite increased when these minerals were held in contact. An electrochemical mechanism was proposed for the observed behaviors.

It has been discovered that water insoluble alcoholic solutions of alkyl hydroxamic acids serve as selective collectors for the flotation of phosphate mineral resources (Miller et al., 2000). The effectiveness of the new collector chemistry has been demonstrated by the results from single stage bench scale flotation experiments for feed material from plants in Florida, North Carolina, and Utah. In the best case, from experiments with low grade (5% P20,) coarse feed (16 x 35 mesh), a single stage phosphate recovery of 95% was achieved with a concentrate grade of 31% P20,. Such a separation efficiency could not be achieved using the traditional fatty acid/fuel oil collectors as is evident from a comparison of the respective grade/recovery curves.

Concentrate flow rates were measured for the flotation of -100-mesh Lower Kittaning coal in a computer-controlled 0.076 x 3.5-m pilot flotation column. The variables studied were recovery zone height, airflow and solid feed rates. The specific projected surface areas of the feed, concentrate and tailing streams were determined from the measured particle size distributions. The results obtained show that the concen¬trate flow rate was independent of recovery zone height but was dependent on the hydrostatic pressure setting (measure of froth depth), gas flow rate, solid loading and particle size. New correlations for column carrying capacity and yield are provided as a function of bubble surface area flux and the specific particle projected surface area.

Spiral concentration has gained a great deal of popularity as a cheap, effective method for recovering fine coal (8x100 mesh). Typically, 6-turn, wide-profile spirals are used in either a single pass, open- circuit configuration or in combination with a middlings retreat circuit. Recent work conducted at Carpco, however, has indicated that a split feed scenario and/or hydraulic classification in advance of spiral concentration offers significant advantages in both capacity and metallurgical performance. In addition, it has also been shown that the apparent density separation which naturally occurs in a hydraulic classifier provides significant up-grading in terms of pyrite and ash rejection. The results from this study will be presented in comparison with those obtained from open-circuit spiral testing.

Researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), in cooperation with mine operators, conducted a study of heat stress exposures among mine rescue workers in underground mines. Mine rescue workers face extreme heat loads as they enter hot and poorly ventilated environments, particularly when they are wearing breathing apparatuses. The burden of wearing a closed-circuit breathing apparatus (CCBA), the inability to drink fluids for extended periods of time, and the potential for ventilation disruptions and fires combine to increase the risk of heat illness during a response to an emergency. In this research, ambient environmental conditions and heat strain indicators were measured using conventional ventilation monitoring tools during mine rescue training exercises. Heat strain was measured with an ingestible temperature-sensing pill that measured core temperature continuously. In addition, a heart-rate monitoring chest strap was used to indicate physical strain resulting from physical activity and heat. Both core temperature and heart rate data were trans-mitted to a remote recorder worn by a rescuer and time-stamped. Team activities were also observed to determine the contribution of work rate to a person’s total heat load. The effectiveness of several engineering controls, such as cooling the air inhaled by rescuers through an apparatus, wearing cooling vests, and supplying water through the CCBA masks, were investigated. Administrative controls, such as limiting the duration of exposure and controlling the work rate through forced-rest regimens, were also evaluated. Results to date are discussed, and tools for evaluating team condition and estimating the length of time it would be safe for rescuers to work are proposed.

The nature of surface sites for the adsorption of gold from alkaline cyanide solutions has been investigated using samples of synthetic, highly-oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG). This HOPG material offers an idealized graphite structure enabling the independent study of the graphitic basal-plane sites and the edges, or defect sites, of the graphitic planes. Radiochemical and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopic experiments independently demonstrated that gold adsorption was much higher on the edges (defects) of the graphite planes than on the planes themselves. These results suggest that site-specific adsorption is prevalent in the adsorption of gold by graphitic carbons (including activated carbon, carbon black and graphite) and that most of the favored sites are at edge defects in the graphite crystal structure.

Opaline clays from central and eastern Georgia are widely used as industrial and domestic absorbants, principally as insecticide carrier and animal litter. The clays are classified as fuller's earth, although they &e somewhat atypical of the group, since opal (cristobolite) is commonly the dominant clay-sized mineral. A preliminary investigation of absorption characteristics indicated that water vapor absorption (264 days) is' related to opal content as determined by x-ray diffraction peak height ratios. Ethylene glycol vapor absorption is related to montmorillonite content. Contact absorption of water is complexly related to surface absorption, porosity, opal content and montmorillonite content, and may be as great as 112% of the original sample weight. The most absorbent clays are highly porous (to 65%) and contain both montmorillonite and opal.

The semi-autogenous grinding circuit at the Utah Mines Limited, Island Copper Operation, located on Vancouver Island, British Columbia, is described. Since start-up of the operation in 1971 grinding circuit throughput has been progressively increased from the initial design rate of 30,000 to the current average 45,000 tonnes per day (t/d) of porphyry copper ore. Key developments and modifications in operating and maintenance practice that have contributed to this increase are reviewed.

INTRODUCTION The development during 1979 of a relatively small, but high grade (10,000 tonnes uranium at an average grade of 2 per cent), uranium ore body at Nabarlek in the Northern Territory, Australia offered an excellent opportunity to obtain detailed radiation data for an open cut mine operating during the dry season. The ore body (Queensland Mines Limited-1979), which was completely extracted in a period of four and a half months, consisted of a vein type deposit dipping at 30 to 45 degrees and contained a central core of pitchblende in massive and irregular pods, surrounded by lower grade fine grained disseminated pitchblende. Mineralisation extended from the surface to a depth of 72 metres over a length of 230 metres with an average but variable thickness of 1D metres. Ore near the surface had been heavily weathered and complex secondary minerals were formed which had dispersed from the main vein. Mining was carried out with large earth moving equipment. Overburden and weathered surface ore were removed initially with scrapers. At greater depths bulldozers were used to rip and assemble ore and rock at each level, and these were removed by large trucks to the ore and waste rock stockpiles. Where necessary, blasting took place during shift changes each evening. Mining was essentially continuous with two ten hour alternating shifts working for thirteen days out of fourteen. At the completion of mining a relatively small excavation (335m x 185m x 70m) remained, and this will serve as a tailings repository during the milling phase. FIELD MEASUREMENTS The inhalation of radon daughters, arising from the radioactive decay of radon gas is well established (Archer et. al. 1973) as a potential hazard in the uranium mining industry. Control over radon and its daughters to ensure that recommended exposure limits are not exceeded is achieved by providing adequate ventilation, and under normal circumstances natural ventilation from an open pit should be sufficient. However, during the dry season it is not uncommon for stable atmospheric conditions, with little horizontal air movement, to develop - particularly at night - and significant radon daughter concentrations may accumulate. Throughout the entire mining period measurements were therefore made of radon and radon daughter levels at representative locations within the pit and on the ore stockpile as it developed. Initially these measurements were carried out manually, using the Rolle method for radon daughters, (Rolle 1972) and .scintillation cells (Lucas 1964) or a two filter tube for the determination of radon (Thomas 1970). For the latter half of the period however, a continuous recording instrument, developed within the Laboratory was used to provide a detailed record of radon daughter levels within the pit. At the same time, continuous readings of wind speed and direction, and vertical temperature gradient between 10 and 3D metres were recorded on a 30 metre meteorological tower, situated 800 metres from the pit. Radon Emanation Rates It is evident that radon and radon daughter concentrations depend on the grade, or more particularly, on the surface radon emanation rate of the ore which is exposed. Accordingly, as the mine progressed, detailed measurements were made of both of these quantities. The surface emanation rate of radon was determined for each ore bench as it was exposed by placing an extended array of canisters, filled with freshly degassed activated charcoal, face down on the ore for a known time. These canisters, which had previously been calibrated in the Laboratory, adsorb radon with high efficiency, and the total radon adsorbed is measured after retrieval by detecting the gamma rays from the trapped radon daughters (Countess 1977). At the same time, as each canister was placed in position, a measurement of the local ore grade was made for each location. This was achieved with a calibrated sodium iodide scintillation detector, adjusted to detect the 609 keV gamma ray from the isotope 2148i, a decay product of radium. Finally, measurements were made of the radiation field 1 metre above the surface, with a gamma ray survey meter, which was calibrated in the Laboratory. The relationship between the scintillator count rate and ore grade was determined by comparing the scintillator output with the gamma monitor, and relating the latter measurements to ore grade (Thomson and Wilson 1980). It was observed that while emanation rates and ore grades varied widely, the ratio of emanation rate to ore grade was in general fairly stable. A plot of this ratio is presented as a function of depth below the original surface in Figure 1. For most observations the ratio is constant at a value of 80 Bq m-2 s -1 per unit ore grade, where ore grade is expressed as percentage of U308. At the surface however, where the ore was weathered, the ratio was about a factor of three higher, and at two particular depths, where high grade pitchblende was being removed, it was very much lower. This was not unexpected as earlier Laboratory studies of drill core samples from Nabarlek had indicated that the emanation coefficient (the fraction of radon produced within the ore which escapes from the mineral particles) decreases with increasing ore grade.

NTRODUCTION In the mining industry, a "drill jumbo" is a drilling unit equipped with one or more rock drills and mounted on a mechanical conveyance. Jumbos range from single¬drill ring drills mounted on simple steel skids to sophisti¬cated multiple-drill units mounted on diesel engine powered carriers and equipped with automatic controls and sound-abatement cabs. Individual types of jumbos usually are designed for specific tasks such as fan drilling in sublevel caving operations. Some units, such as development jumbos, can be utilized for several functions in addition to their normal applications, e.g., for production drilling in room-and-pillar operations, stoping in cut-and-fill mining, etc. Mine operators can purchase individual components from manufacturers, assembling these components into a jumbo suitable for specific conditions. However, this requires that mine personnel have good engineering and mechanical abilities. Although manufacturers of jumbos maintain facilities for designing machines to meet con¬ditions created by new mining methods and unusual ap¬plications, the cost of the engineering and experimental work for new types of jumbos should be evaluated in terms of both costs and benefits; it may be advantageous to plan the mining operation so that existing and proven units can be utilized. GENERAL SELECTION CRITERIA Since the operating conditions vary in underground mines, the design of a jumbo must be selected to cope with the individual characteristics of the mine. The necessary considerations include access space into the working areas, grades expected to be encountered, radii of the curves, ambient temperatures, the characteristics of the rock, the acidity or alkalinity (pH rating) of the mine water, etc. Access to Mine Workings The mine workings must be accessible to the selected jumbo. Frequently, a jumbo must be disassembled at least partially to pass through the mine shafts. There¬fore, a bolted construction allowing disassembly into pieces of suitable size and weight is desirable in most applications. Type of Undercarriage Generally, a crawler-type undercarriage should not be used in trackless mines having acidic mine water. The acidic water causes an electrolytic action between the individual crawler parts and causes rapid corrosion and early failures. Propulsion A two-wheel drive on a pneumatic-tired jumbo is marginal for grades exceeding 12%. A four-wheel drive unit with good weight distribution is capable of operat¬ing on grades of up to 35%. At least 30% of the gross vehicle weight (GVW) should be carried on the steering axle; otherwise, the steering tires may not have sufficient traction on loose road surfaces and may "plow" instead of steer. To assure stable operation in mines with steep grades, the height of the center of gravity of the jumbo should be considered. It should not make the unit prone to rolling over on the steep grades that may be encoun¬tered. Turning Ability In confined working areas, a skid-steering or crawler unit has the best maneuverability. An articulated carrier is preferable when base-rotated parallel booms are being utilized. A rigid-frame jumbo with automotive steering is compact and economical, having lower maintenance requirements than the other two types. However, the turning radius of a rigid-frame unit is wider than either the skid-steering or articulated units, and this wider turning radius may be detrimental in mines with narrow drifts. JUMBO COMPONENTS Rail Undercarriages A mine with a rail-transportation system generally utilizes drill jumbos that are mounted on rail-type under¬carriages. With a light load and good weight distribu¬tion, this carrier may consist of a simple two-axle four-wheel platform onto which the boom-mounting brackets are attached. As the depth of the round and the penetration rates increase, the weight of the equip¬ment installed on the chassis also increases. The greatest problem with a heavy overhung load is balancing the carrier; a three-boom unit may require a substantial amount of counterweighting to maintain an acceptable 70% to 30% axle-load balance. Although lengthening the wheelbase helps balance the unit, a long wheelbase increases the turning radius, often creating problems on curves and sometimes requiring a swivel truck-type chassis. A good rule of thumb for a simple four-wheel undercarriage is to maintain a wheelbase length to track gage-width ratio that does not exceed 2.5 to 1.0. For a larger ratio, a swivel truck should be utilized. Swing-out outriggers or roof jacks help keep a jumbo in place during the drilling cycle. Usually, a rail-mounted jumbo is not self-propelled. Instead, it is maneuvered into place by a locomotive. Occasionally, several headings are being advanced in close proximity, and a self-propelled jumbo is con¬venient. In electrified mines, such a jumbo utilizes conventional battery-powered traction gear; in dieselized mines, hydrostatic drive components offer good flexi¬bility. SHELDON P. WIMPFEN The measure of the success of any mining operation is the size of the difference between sales realization and cost of product, including operating, sales, administra¬tive, capital and others. Evaluation of a mining project necessitates projecting costs and sales realization as accurately as possible. Possible variations in specific cost elements and sales prices must be considered. To accomplish this, project studies should include giving effect to possible fluctuations to determine the break¬even points with varying costs and prices. Development of cost data is never an easy task. Mining is characterized by a great variety of conditions which result in still more variables. Achieving realistic figures as of any specific time involves consideration of changes, which may be frequent, in labor-contract terms and equipment used, variations in working condi¬tions and mining practices, and changes in mineralization and metallurgy. The purchasing power of the dollar, which has been declining persistently, also affects the situation at any given time. The only thing that can be said of costs, with certainty, is that they will change. With this in mind, the "guideline" data in this section are offered for the use of the mining engineer. It was provided for the most part by representative companies, whose contributions are gratefully acknowledged. In reviewing the tabu¬lations and other material it is of course necessary to remember that the data presented are valid only for the time periods specified, and will change with changing economic conditions in any other. 31.1-CAPITAL COST OF PLANTS Plant capital costs are set forth in Tables 31-6 and 31-7 by year of construction. To estimate capital cost of plants built in future years, various cost bases and indexes are utilized. The number will vary for each specific plant. For a recently constructed 30,000-tpd (tons per day) copper concentrator, 1,800 drawings were made. Design should provide for the addition of milling units when these may become justified in relation to investment markets and life of the deposit.

Off-highway truck purchasers know the amount of tonnes, pounds, kilograms, etc, a truck will carry. However just because a truck is rated at 240 tons may in no way correlate to what that truck will actually carry. Two numbers define the carrying capacity of an off-highway truck: 1. The weight carrying capacity of the truck; 2. The volume carrying capacity of the truck. These two numbers must be in sync or the amount of payload carried will vary from the carrying capacity of the truck. Currently the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) standard J1363 January 1985 defines the volumetric carrying capacity of an off-highway truck. However as is well known in several South American countries, the SAE standard overrates the truck’s effective volumetric carrying capacity 15% to 20%. This paper presents a method for measuring “effective” body volumetric carrying capacity, resulting in a truck body for carrying the targeted load, matched to the loading equipment that interacts positively with the truck chassis.

The Felder ore deposit is a 5,000,000-pound uranium deposit in the South Texas Coastal Plain. It occurs in the basal sand of an Oakville Formation (Miocene) alluvial system. The host sand is a carbonate-rich arkose which contains virtually no carbonaceous debris and has been reduced by the local introduction of hydrogen sulfide. The ore lies well within the reduced zone and occurs as coffinite and uraninite that fill interstices and coat and replace grains. The overall geometric configuration of the ore is that of a winged, crescentic ore roll. Weak mineralization extends the wings of the ore roll and gives greater expression to the roll character. Departures from the shape are controlled by discontinuities in bed- ding and by proximity of the ore to the surface. Associated with the uranium is a broad halo of anomalous molybdenum. Subsidiary mineralized trends suggest a pre-existing up-dip position for the main roll. Oxidation from the surface largely destroyed this previous roll by solubilization of uranium. Uranium subsequently migrated into favorably reduced sand and reprecipitated at the present roll position.

In an exchange of views with the Program Chairman for the Technical Session on Industrial Minerals and Investment in Foreign Countries, it was agreed that it would be more interesting to approach the problem of mineral investment in foreign countries in a more general framework and not confine it to industrial minerals. Therefore, this Bureau of Mines report is proposed to examine current attitudes toward investments in foreign mineral resources and restraints that they impose on investments necessary to assure supply for future global mineral needs.

With the growing demand for energy, explora¬tion for uranium deposits has dramatically increased in the past few years. Since the early ages of uranium exploration, natural gamma ray logs has proved fast and convenient in locating and evaluating mineralized bodies. However, natural gamma ray logging is an indirect measure of the uranium content and in some circonstances, the radiometric signal can be 'altered in a very significant way. To check the presence of any distortion, statistical comparision of radiometric counts and chemical assay values for the same samples is generally performed. Of course in such studies, one inevitably mixes samples where the radiometric signal is really proportional to the uranium content and samples where this signal is influenced by many other sources or distorted before being recorded. Nevertheless, the average tendency leads to correction factors which are then applied to every radiometric reading in the deposit or portion of the deposit where the statistical comparison is made. To account for the "average" character of these correction factors, a parameter of uncertainty like a standard deviation of possible errors is associated to each corrected value. This parameter can be latter used in an ore reserve estimation when the weights assigned to samples should depend on the precision of their grade. The purpose of this paper is to present a new regression technique which can be used without any restrictive hypothesis like a normal or lognormal distribution. Different standard ways which can be used to statistically compare radiometric and chemical assay values for the same sample and to derive a correction factor for the latter will first be reviewed, after a general discussion of disequilibrium problems. The discussion and the examples will be restricted to the case of natural gamma ray logging in drill holes but the methods presented in this paper can also be applied to data from the radiometric probing of a working face or a truck load in an operating mine.

Crushing and grinding The Crushing and Grinding Technical Committee There was substantial activity in the area of crushing and grinding with the improved outlook in the industry. The Crushing and Grinding Committee's theme of 1987's Annual Meeting in Denver was Fundamentals of Mechanical Design for Crushing and Grinding Mills. At the meeting, the concept of gearless sag mill variable speed drives was taken out of the closet, dusted off, and a wraparound motor was put on hard copy with the ordering of a 9.7- x 4.5-m, 8.2-MW (32- x 15-ft, 11,000-) sag mill. Additionally, comparisons were provided to the mill design of the gearless drive sag mill and the twin 4.5 MW (6000 hp) do variable speed drives placed on the drawing board for the Kennecott UCD Expansions. This involved a 10- x 4.5m, 8.9 MW (34- x 15 ft, 12,000 hp) sag mill. Differing opinions were also expressed in technical presentations pertaining to the need for quality mill specifications in design and manufacturing. J. Berney-Ficklin of Bechtel presented a paper outlining the need for quality design and manufacturing specifications in large scale grinding mills, and the overall cost reduction in capital and operating costs. Others presented differing specific views, but all emphasized a central theme. Quality and reliable designs in large mills should not be compromised. In-pit crushing applications continue to increase, overseas and in the US, in both mining and quarrying. Different in-pit crushing units have been classified as mobile, with integral transport systems; semi-mobile, typically modular systems that use separate transporters for repositioning; semi-stationary plants that must be dismantled before transporting and typically require earthwork and concrete foundation work; and stationary in-pit crushing plants, which remain in place for the life of the pit. The majority of equipment sales of conventional crushing and grinding circuits in 1987 were to gold mining operations. There have been two areas of end use: • conventional jaw/gyratory or impact crushing circuits preparing low grade ores for heap leaching; and • small scale sag/ball mill circuits preparing higher grade ores for classical cyanide leach/ recovery circuits. There was also continued interest in ABC and SABC circuits for both base and precious metals plants. High pressure roll crushers continue to attract considerable interest in the cement industry. There, they are used to prepare raw materials or clinker for subsequent ball/tube milling. However, they have apparently been less successful in the mineral industry where the energy savings/ capacity gains have been much less dramatic. Several papers covering the theory and application of these machines were presented in an industrial minerals session on cement at the SME Annual Meeting. The Third International Conference on Hydrocylones, held in England in October produced several papers of interest on classification and screening to the mining industry. In particular, a new cyclone apex, developed by Mt. Newman Mining, shows promise of reducing water flow to the cyclone underflow stream and, therefore, increased underflow pulp densities and reduced fines recycle in grinding circuits. A twin vortex hydrocyclone was also described and shown to give a sharper split than conventional units. Similar double cyclones were introduced in the 1950's, but failed to achieve widespread acceptance. This was due mainly to a proneness to blockage in the transitional zone. It will be interesting to see whether this latest variant can overcome this problem in the typical operation. A number of North American iron ore plants installed the capability to produce fluxed iron ore pellets. Most chose to grind the stone on site with circuits designed to grind taconite ore. Methods employed to grind this material included single-stage ball mills closed with fine screens, rod and ball mill circuits - both open and closed with cyclones - and semiautogenous mills, followed by ball mills closed with screens or cyclones. As a result, research efforts in flocculation, surface chemistry, and polymers science have focused on the problems related to the dewatering of solid mineral wastes.
