In a previous article1 the methyl stretching vibrations for a series of xanthates and amines were reported, and the frequency of the methyl stretching vibrations in a homologous series of the alkyl compounds were shown to decrease exponentially with chain length and approach a limiting value corresponding to that of saturated hydrocarbon beyond six or seven carbons. These observations were explained quantitatively by the theory of Goto and Takenaka2 who proposed an equation relating the frequency shifts to the inductive effect of polar groups. As a result, the alkyl groups in the shorter chain heteropolar compounds were interpreted as becoming somewhat polar, and a good correlation was observed between the CH3-stretching frequencies and such surface chemistry parameters as contact angle, surface tension lowering, solubility, and critical micelle concentration" The substitution of fluorine atoms, the most electronegative of all atoms, for the hydrogen atoms in alkyl groups was expected to reverse the direction of the inductive effect within a heteropolar molecule, and its effect on the C-F stretching frequency shifts and on some surface chemical properties became of interest. In a recent study the C-F stretching frequencies of a series of normal perfluorocarboxylic acids and a few 1,1' -dihydroperfluoro alcohols were determined as a function of chain length and the results were compared with the corresponding hydrocarbon analogs. Furthermore, the nature of the induced polarity in the hydrocarbon and fluorocarbon groups was investigated through surface potential measurements at the interfaces of air-aqueous solutions of normal butyl alcohol and of l,l'-dihydroperfluorobutyl alcohol and through differential capacity and electrocapillary measurements at the interfaces of mercury-aqueous solutions containing the above two alcohols. Experimental Normal perfluorocarboxylic acids and 1,1' -dihydroperfluoro alcohols were provided through the courtesy of the 3M Company, St. Paul, Minnesota. Normal butyl alcohol was purchased from Distillation Product Industries, Rochester, New York. Roof falls are one of the greatest hazards in underground coal mines worldwide. Due to stringent safety measures and extensive support system development, roof falls have been reduced significantly but they still persist in many underground coal mines. Some of the roof falls initiate with cutter roof or guttering. In the past, many factors have been identified as being responsible for the development of cutters and roof fall. These responsible factors can be broadly classified as stress related or non-stress related. In this paper the finer details of mining technique have been taken into consideration for better understanding of cutter roof and roof fall problems. Three dimensional finite difference modeling has been used to explain the mechanism of cutter development. Strain softening material behavior has been used to realistically simulate the cutter formation, and common cutting sequences as implemented in the field have been simulated. This was done with an objective to determine whether the cutting sequence has really any significant control over cutter formation or not. In addition to cutting sequences, the effect of cut length is also studied. The effect of step cutting and turning of crosscut into and away from major and minor horizontal stresses is also examined to see its influence on cutter development.

Aggregate resources should be considered primary factors in urban development. Resource planning is essential because land values, previous construction, or zoning restrictions often preempt exploitation of aggregate deposits within an urban area. Sequential land use practices allow development of areas prior to urban development. Population and aggregate consumption trends in Austin, Texas, indicate that substantial quantities of reserves will be lost to future development. Aggregate materials are present in nearby seas. However, a comparison of transportation and reclamation costs indicates that reclaiming land after mineral extraction can be significantly cheaper than transporting materials longer distances.

"During TBM operations, thrust jacks apply high-concentrated forces to the last installed precast segment. These loads generate a disturbed region in the precast segment under the thrust jacks, in which significant tensile stresses (defined as splitting or bursting stresses) occur perpendicular to the load direction. In addition, due to the demand of compatibility, the combined effect of TBM high-concentrated loads determines tensile spalling stresses in the area far from the loads. Therefore, local rebars or fiber reinforcement are required in these areas. This paper focuses on the study of the effects generated by high-concentrated loads exerted by TBM hydraulic jacks, mainly in terms of both spalling and splitting phenomena. Experimental tests on small-scale specimens showed that polypropylene fiber reinforcement significantly enhances both the bearing capacity and the ductility. Moreover, polypropylene fibers resulted in very effective control of compatibility cracks.INTRODUCTIONTunnel segments are generally reinforced by conventional rebars (RC segments) in order to resist the tensile stresses both at Serviceability (SLS) and Ultimate Limit States (ULS).In the two last decades, Fiber Reinforced Concrete (FRC) has been used in many precast tunnel segments (sometimes also in combination with conventional rebars). Steel Fiber Reinforced Concrete (SFRC) is generally used for these applications even though there is a growing industry interest on macro-synthetic fibers for structural applications. Conforti et al. (2015) showed that polypropylene (PP) macro fibers can be used as shear reinforcement in both wide shallow and deep beams. Referring to precast tunnel linings, very few early experiences are reported in literature. Bonalumi et al. (2015) developed full-scale tests on tunnel elements reinforced by PP fiber reinforcement and conventional rebars (hybrid solution). The design process of segmental concrete tunnel linings generally models the standard load cases of demolding, storage, transportation, positioning and embedded ground condition. In all these stages the ring can be modelled as simple curved beam elements (having a height equal to the lining thickness and a width equal to the segment length). During these loading conditions, flexural demand is generally limited; thus, in case of conventional RC elements, a rather low ratio of longitudinal curved rebars is usually adopted (?s of about 0.2-0.3%)."

[The Thompson Creek Coal and Coke Corporation, a. mall company engaged in producing coal in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado, is currently engaged in a struggle of destiny to increase their production from inclined seam operation to compete with highly mechanized horizontal bed mines. This paper introduces some of the problems encountered it pitch seam mining as they apply to the convention, room and pillar system employed at the present time. Further described is the test work now being conducted to overcome these obstacles with an. attendant increase in productivity. Included in this test work is a mining machine designed especially for pitching seams, an automated longwall, and hydraulic mining of the latter compared with those of conventional work presently employed.]

The Prairie Creek intrusion, near Murfreesboro, Arkansas, is the site of the only commercial diamond mine in North America. Three major lithologies are associated with the intrusion, a hypabyssal peridotite, a volcanic breccia in .which the majority of diamonds occur, and associated tuff. Previous studies, including mining history, geological, geophysical, petrological and whole-rock and mineral chemistry are reviewed. The recent suggestion, by other workers, that this intrusion may be more correctly called a lamproite is examined and supported. This has serious implications for diamond exploration in Arkansas and elsewhere in the U.S.

Arch Mineral Corporation and Rocky Mountain Energy's Medicine Bow Mine in Wyoming presented an interesting challenge to the concept of mining a multiple-seam, dipping coal in the Hanna Basin. The 3362 and 2962 pits at MBCC were designed in a multiple seam coal consisting of 4 (and in some areas 5) bands of coal; these coal beds are all in the Ferris formation. The area was subject to some localized faulting and a major fault caused a physical restraint that we mined up against in our final cut. Using a 1570 dragline as the principal stripping machine, the concept of developing a bench for stripping the lower seams from the low-wall side of the pit was initiated. The results of this method of stripping were very satisfying for this pit through the completion of pit life and prompted us to use it in other areas at MBCC and at our other operations. Mining a dipping coal presents a small twist to conventional "flat" coal stripping. The spoil has a tendency to continually try to slide into the pit and the increased overburden on each cut as you mine down the dip creates spoil problems unless adequate design provisions are made prior to stripping.

Trona ore at the Westvaco mine of FMC Corporation has been obtained by room- and-pillar methods since the mine began operation. The flat-lying, 10-foot bed of trona, Na2CO3 NaHCO3 2H2O, is covered by 1500 feet of weak shale and sandstone. Extraction of pillars on the retreat quite often throws large amounts of weight onto development workings. Weak shales in the roof and floor fail rapidly and the mine ribs slough to such an extent that mining often becomes very difficult. When this occurs efficiency goes down, costs go up, and the risk to men and machinery increases greatly. Difficult mining conditions in the early 60's forced a re-evaluation of all presently known mining techniques in bedded deposits. Many room-and-pillar mining plans' were compared with the system in use at that time, but none of them offered a better solution to the roof control problem. Longwall techniques were seriously considered, but machinery was not available that would cut the hard trona seam and still maintain the productivity obtained from room-and-pillar sections. Roof cones troy in the longwall methods appeared to be more satisfactory than that found in room-and--pillar techniques. It was therefore felt that a new technique using the longwall principle and based on rock mechanics should be tried rather than previously known pillaring methods.

The production of portland cement requires that four basic elements -- calcium, silica, alumina and iron -- be ground to a fine powder, homogenized, and fed to the pyroprocessing unit, where it is burned to a cement clinker. The raw material must either be ground wet in a slurry form or dried and ground to a dry powder, with a fineness of approximately 85% passing the 200 M screen. According to the Portland Association's Plant Information Summary, approximately 38% of the U.S. capacity is ground wet and 62% ground dry. Understanding mill charge motion is important. In the charge, the centre of gravity is shifted from the rotational centre of the mill system, and its motion is induced by rotation of the mill, while at the same time the charge creates a torque into the mill system. Breakage of ore particles and wear of liners/ball media are closely linked to the motion. To study these phenomena in a physically correct manner, numerical models for different parts of the mill system are needed. Validations of such models are scarce, because of the difficulty to measure in a tumbling mill. Experimental measurements in a lab mill were done for diverse load cases: varying feed materials, mill fillings, mill speeds and pulp liquids. The mill is set up to directly measure the charge-induced torque. The accuracy is good with relative uncertainty smaller than ±2% for relevant load cases. A full three dimensional numerical model of the whole mill is used to predict induced torque. Agreement between predicted and measured torque at steady-state is good. In addition, the model can accurately predict the mill start-up behavior for torque and mill power. This proves that the model is physically correct, and can be used for full-scale mills.

The leaching behavior of rhenium in ammonium iodide solutions with iodine as oxidant has been studied. Experiments were carried out in an autoclave. The effect of stirring speed, temperature, pH of the solution, iodine and iodide concentrations on the dissolution of rhenium was investigated. It was found that high temperature and high pH of the solutions were essential for the efficient leaching of rhenium. The dissolution rate was found to be dependent upon the concentration of iodine and iodide. It was concluded that the dissolution of rhenium under the conditions studied was controlled by mass transfer of iodine with an apparent activation energy of 15.77 kJ/mole.

One possible alternative for disposal of flue gas desulfurization (FGD) by-products is use as backfilling support material in highwall mine adits. The finite element method was used to analyze the variation of stresses and displacements within and around a highwall adit backfilled with FGD materials. The engineering properties of the rock material and the optimum mix proportioning of the FGD materials were obtained from laboratory tests. Finite element analyses show that, for the case in question, the roof displacement would decrease about 48 percent and the peak stress could be decreased about 58 percent. The study indicates that fairly weak FGD materials can eventually lead to stability of backfilled highwall adits.

With the dramatic increase in world demand for basic raw materials, open pit mining is proceeding at an unprecedented rate. A viable demand is the ever tempting Siren's song for increased production or new facilities. When the Siren's lure is viewed against the panorama of today's world economic milieu the concomitant Scylla and Charybdis are seen in the form of high capital cost and high operating cost. If the economic realities of present day open pit mining are to show a proper return on investment, a clear and penetrating eye must be cast upon the area of mine planning. This paper deals with the problem of overburden removal. In almost every open pit mining operation overburden removal is a significant part of the capital cost and operating cost of the total operation. This paper deals with a new and unique method to affect economical overburden removal. Well known to all are the parameters surrounding draglines, shovels, and bucket wheel excavators. All of these machines require a reasonably stable soil to support them and the shovel and bucket wheel excavator require a reasonably stable bank in which to operate. Their reliability, portability and rate of production per dollar of invested capital are good.

There are many influences which have a bearing on the economics of industrial minerals production. The purpose of this paper is to discuss briefly three factors which have economic significance in the production of these mineral commodities. The three items of discussion include 1) the nature and relative value of the industrial minerals group, 2) project planning, and 3) market analyses. General aspects of these factors are familiar to most of us. However, an attempt will be made to give some current details regarding each. Also, in reality, project planning and market studies are usually so closely associated that they will be discussed jointly, rather than separately. This will be done by way of examples which show how these two activities actually evolved for two industrial minerals projects.

The Dents Run Demonstration Project near Morgantown, West Virginia, was a cooperative venture involving the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the Water Resources Division (WRD)(1) of the West Virginia Department of Natural Resources (DNR), and the Christopher Division of the Consolidation Coal Company (CONSOL). The object of this project was to demonstrate pollution control methods and to clean up a 37.8 sq km (14.6 sq mi) watershed severely polluted by coal mine drainage. A study entitled, "Water Infiltration Control to Achieve Mine Water Pollution Control" (EPA-R-2-73-142),(2) was conducted by the Cyrus Wm. Rico Division of NUS Corporation for the grantee to determine the feasibility of utilizing remedial techniques to improve the Dents Run water¬shed. This study showed that the Dents Run watershed was discharging as much as 6,870 kg/day (15,100 lb/day) of acid; 1620 kg/day (3,560 lb/day) of iron 17,250 kg/day (38,000 lb/day) of sulfates; and 29,500 kg/day (64,900 lb/day) of total dissolved solids into the Monongahela River near Morgantown, West Virginia. This pollution was caused by the combination of borehole pump discharges from active underground mines, runoff from abandoned strip mines, and runoff from refuse dumps.

Gold is sufficiently valuable that concentrations as small as 1 p.p.m. may support low-cost mining. Mindful of this, Sunoco Energy Development Company (Sunedco) obtained fire-assay analyses on some sulfide-rich sandstone encountered during routine drilling. Initial fire-assay values from independent laboratories indicated some significant gold values and independent analysis by atomic-absorption spectroscopy also indicated detectable gold at economically interesting concentrations. Sunoco geologists realized the potential for spurious results inherent in both fire assaying and atomic-absorption spectroscopy. Fire assaying that relies on gold measurement by weight requires perfect separation of gold from all other elements, Imperfect separation may artificially enhance apparent gold concentrations. Atomic-absorption-spectroscopy (AAS) measurements are potentially subject to interferences from other elements. For example, Beamish and Van Loon (1977, p.4) report AAS measurements of 4 p.p.m. Au to be characteristic of completely barren soil samples when samples are prepared by standard dissolution in HC1 to form solutions of about 10,000 p.p.m. total cations (mostly Na, Ca, Mg, Al, and Fe) .

The dissolution behavior of palladium powder in thiourea solutions has been studied. The variables studied included temperature, stirring speed, and concentrations of thiourea, acid and ferric ion. Palladium was found to be soluble in thiourea solutions in the presence of an oxidant such as ferric ion. The dissolution of palladium in thiourea solutions was found to be chemical reaction controlled with an apparent activation energy of about 2S.3 kJ/mol.

'IM existing predictive methods were chosen for evaluation; an influence function (Bals Theory) and a profile function (hyperbolic). These ere applied to several field measured subsidence profiles over United States coal mines. The effect of homogeneous versus non-homogeneous overburden on surface subsidence is demonstrated and the utilization of Bals Theory as a subsidence predictive method for both types of overburden is examined. The major factor affecting subsidence profile characteristics is the migration of the inflection point toward the centerline of the longwall panel. A computer program was written to aid in the analysis.

The three-dimensional finite element technique combined with the progressive failure approach was utilized to simulate stress distributions in a mine section which occur in response to a longwall mining operation. Due to the availability of the Cray supercomputer, a large-scale three-dimensional finite element model was developed for the analysis. The Hoek-Brown failure criterion, which describes a realistic behavior of rock masses, was used for the simulation of progressive failure. A comparison of calculated and monitored stresses in the mine has shown that the model gives a good representation of stresses in the mine structure.

Mine design and selection of ore processing capacity depend upon a correct estimate of the grade-tonnage distribution. The estimate must reflect what can be recovered and processed. The McCoy/Cove operation in central Nevada, USA, is a gold and silver mine. Case studies of recoverable reserve estimation for gold and silver were made using multiple indicator kriging and the log-affine variance correction. From this model, the grade-tonnage distribution was constructed. Optimal pits were generated by utilizing the distribution, and the results were compared with the pit generated by ordinary kriging. Studies indicate that the proposed method for multi-metal recoverable reserve estimation is more accurate than ordinary kriging in terms of both tons and the grade. Using recoverable reserves for mine design will maximize global recovery of mineral resources.
