The Outokumpu Skim-Air Flash Flotation machine was developed to separate valuable mineral from gangue as early as practical by floating it with specially designed flotation equipment installed in the grinding circuit. Machines already in service have shown the ability to produce final grade concentrate with an increase in overall recovery and flotation rate while decreasing filter cake moisture and reducing fluctuating feed grades to conventional flotation circuits. The first US production test was carried out in a southwestern copper concentrator with successful results. This report describes the results of the test along with an explanation of the process and the benefits obtainable.

The application of multiple point statistics (MPS) in oil studies has gained traction over the years; however, the use of MPS in mineral resource estimation and classification is still limited. This is despite MPS’ ability to deal with complex and heterogeneous geology better than the commonly applied two-point based methods. The availability and choice of a representative training image (TI) are often cited as the main challenge holding back MPS’ application in mining geostatistical studies. On the other hand, the general approach used in mining whereby early focus is on higher grade areas and lower grades are planned to be mined later presents a massive opportunity for the development of representative TIs. Mined-out areas provide large amounts of historical data that can be used to develop training images or training datasets that can be used to estimate in mining extension areas (often lower in grade), provided low grade areas are underpinned by similar geology analogue. This approach will enable more robust estimates in mine/pit extension areas for both high- and low-grade extensions than with traditional two-point geostatistical methods.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines performed engineering and economic analyses on 130 domestic phosphate mines and deposits, all containing demonstrated resources, of which 73 are in the Southeastern states of Florida and North Carolina, to determine the domestic availability of phosphate rock. Of the total domestic resources studied (6.4 billion tons of recoverable rock) over 60 percent is found in these two Southeastern states. At an estimated cost of $30 per ton, in January 1981 dollars, approximately 1 billion tons of rock is potentially recoverable from Southeastern deposits, increasing to 3 billion tons at $45. In addition, there is nearly 6 billion tons of recoverable rock at the inferred level (some presently unmineable) in Florida and Georgia.

As the size of the mills get larger and the liners get heavier, a better means had to be found to handle liner replacement. McLellan Industries is famous for their innovative ideas and was called upon by an engineering company to develop a mill liner crane. The first crane was developed for Similkameen about 1969 to serve a 32' 0 x 14' Long SAG Mill. The next was Island Copper in Port Hardy, B.c., the same size as Similkameen in 1970. At that time, we took existing hydraulic cranes and modified them to meet the mill configuration. In 1973, we developed a completely new approach for the Southern Peru copper mine at Tacna, Peru for a Ball Mill, size 16'-6" 0 X 19' Long. Each installation required a design study to meet the change in mill size, trunnion size, elevation of floor to feed trunnion, area at the feed or discharge end of the mill. We have supplied self-propelled units as well as lift in. When there is no room at the feed end and if the mill has a trunnion overflow discharge, we have the mill supplier provide a structural frame to span the sump and move the mill liner handier into position with the use of the overhead crane or a mobile crane.

Perlite is rhyolitic glass with 2 to 5 percent by weight (wt.%) bound water held within the silicic-glass structure. It is often distinguished by vitreous, pearly luster and concentric perlitic fractures ("onionskin"). Occurrences worldwide are associated with Tertiary to middle Quaternary volcanic rocks. Perlite is in silicic domes, plugs, laccoliths, flows, vitric tephra, chill margins of dikes and sills, and welded ash-flow tuffs. It is a hydrated volcanic glass formed through secondary alteration of obsidian by the incorporation of water into the glass/silica structure. Post-emplacement hydration (weathering) of cooled glasses by meteoric water is the principal alteration process, but some hydration by magmatic or meteoric water during or shortly after emplacement, or hydration by water exsolved during cooling may occur. Commercial "perlite" is any volcanic glass that expands or "pops" when heated quickly to plasticity while evolving steam and thus forming a lightweight, frothy material. The expansion temperature typically ranges from 1,100 to 1,500°F. An expanded volume increase of 10 to 40 times the original volume yields expanded densities of 1.5 to 11 pounds per cubic foot (lbs/ft3). Perlite is mined by eight companies at 10 operations in six western states. New Mexico accounts for more than 80% of the total tonnage mined. The rest comes from Arizona, California, Colorado, Idaho, and Nevada. In 1992, domestic production was 571,000 short tons (st), domestic apparent consumption was 591,000 st, and the value of crude perlite was $15.3 million. In 1991, with about the same production and price of crude perlite, the gross value for expanded perlite was $101.7 million. Perlite exports in 1992, primarily to Canada, are estimated an 30,000 st; and imports, from Greece, are an estimated 50,000 st. In 1992, 70 plants in 33 states expanded crude perlite. Construction uses of expanded perlite accounted for 66% of total domestic sales. Expanded perlite used as filter aid accounted for 15%. All other markets, including use as a filler and in agriculture, accounted for 19%. Leading states for expanding perlite, ranked by order of sales, were Mississippi, Pennsylvania, California, Illinois, and Georgia. Domestic perlite encounters transportation disadvantages in some areas of the eastern United States compared to perlite imported from Greece. However, western U.S. perlite exports to Canada offset this in large part, and net import reliance for perlite is about 3% of domestic consumption. Perlite grab samples were tested at the New Mexico Bureau of Mines and Minerals Resources (NMBMMR) for their basic suitability in horticulture, construction, filter aids, and fillers/extenders using Perlite Institute techniques modified by the NMBMMR. Most commercial perlite ranged from 2.5 to 3.0 wt.% bound water for all major types (classical, granular, and pumiceous). Expanded density varied widely, but the lowest density of 1.9 lbs/ft3 was for granular. Average brightness of expanded perlite was 47.6 to 69.3%. Nonexpansibles, commonly obsidian or "dead" perlite, ranged from 18 wt.% to less than 1 wt.%, with granular perlte generally the lowest. Compacted density was not related to either perlite type or nonexpansibles present. Sieve analyses of the -50+100 mesh product showed that, in general, pumiceous perlite produces more fines and classical and granular perlite average 60 to 80% -30+100 mesh after expansion. Samples were tested for crystalline silica that ranged from below the detection limit of 0.5 wt.% to nearly 0.2 wt.%, but most tested below 0.5 wt.%. Although quartz content can be lowered in the expanded product by the expansion process, producers can further lower crystalline silica in the product by mixing low-quartz crude with high-quartz perlite before expansion. Chemical analysis by x-ray fluorescence confirms the rhyolitic composition of perlite, but indicates that surface weathering may increase the concentration of some elements, such as potassium and calcium, by infilling cracks or fissures developed during or after perlite emplacement.

Limited research has been conducted related to the development of mathematical optimization models for production scheduling at large surface coal mines using the area, i.e., strip, mining method. Increased economic and technical challenges have led to a new interest in production schedule optimization models for these type of mining operations like those currently applied to model underground and open pit mines. While area mines share similar characteristics to both open pit and underground metal operations, neither an open pit nor underground production scheduling model adequately depicts an area mine mathematically. We present an integer programming model with blending constraints and discuss the challenges and opportunities related to the implementation for area mines as well as future research in area mine production scheduling.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION The Climax mine is located 161 km (100 miles) southwest of Denver on Fremont Pass astride the Con¬tinental Divide. Climax employs 2800 people to pro¬duce 42 670 t/d (47,000 stpd) of molybdenum ore. The Storke level, the main underground level, produces 19 970 t/d (22,000 stpd); the 600 level, the lowest ac¬tive underground area, produces 7260 t/d (8000 stpd); and the open pit presently produces 15 430 t/d (17,000 stpd), Fig. 1. A panel caving method is possible because of the favorable geology and geometry of the Climax ore body. Geology The Climax deposit is composed of three separate ore bodies formed in a massive Tertiary stockwork which penetrates Precambrian granites and schists. The ore bodies are elliptical in plan with overall dimensions of 914 x 1219 m (3000 x 4000 ft). In section the ore bodies are arcuate with an overall height of 457 m (1500 ft), although the depth is not firmly ascertained. Ore grade decreases rapidly into a highly siliceous cen¬tral core and more gradually toward the outer bounda¬ries of the deposit. The mineralization is relatively continuous in the ore zone and contains few dilution-causing waste inclusions. Molybdenite is contained in pre-ore fractures which were largely recemented during the three mineralization pulses. Postore fractures, with a spacing of a few inches to several meters (feet), render the deposit amenable to caving when it is undercut. The peripheral rock caves similarly to the ore, but the central core is competent and is difficult to cave. Caving Feasibility Successful caving action requires an undercut area of approximately 122 by 122 m (400 by 400 ft). When the undercut area exceeds this minimum distance, the arching effect is lost, and the ore column collapses. Ore extensions from the main cave area less than 122 m (400 ft) wide usually cannot be caved. Waste or low¬grade areas within the deposit can be left if they are large enough to carry weight around openings passing through them. Experience indicates that these areas should be over 30 m (100 ft) in length and width. Smaller unprofitable units of waste, such as postore dikes, are mined to avoid weight problems and result in ore dilution. Successful caving and ore recovery are dependent upon timely ore removal from the undercut zone because columns of immobile ore inhibit caving and concentrate weight onto the underlying workings. Climax experience indicates that a finger (drawpoint) spacing* averaging 10.4 m (34 ft) yields an excellent caving action and a 92.5% ore recovery at the estimated grade. An essential prerequisite to expanding the application of longwall mining techniques in the United States is the development of a better understanding of the mechanics of rock mass deformation near the mined seam, in the inter- burden and at the surface. The results of studies of this type will provide a basis for the development of empirical and/or numerical modeling techniques to predict the rock mass response to mining both near and far from the mined seam. This will lead to improved gate and panel design, resulting in maximum recovery, increased productivity, as well as provide a mechanism for assessing likely surface effects induced by long- wall mining. Presented here is the instrument plan to be used at Kitt Mine No. 1 in the study of rock mass response to two adjacent longwall panels.

General. Data for the operating information given in the 15 tables in this chapter was obtained from voluminous questionnaires sent to over 100 operating companies in 1972. There has been a considera¬ble change since then in supply and power costs and many companies have had expansions or revisions since that time, so it must be realized that information is valid for the year 1972. This is true except for the three new properties of Sacaton, Metcalf, and Pinto Valley. These three operations started up since 1972 and all information for them was obtained in 1975. The questionnaires were sent to all major copper properties throughout the world as well as to many smaller units and to some mines that had complex or unusual conditions. Properties for which no information is given did not submit completed questionnaires. Several operations were unable to supply information requested be¬cause of company policy prohibiting it. However, data is presented for 75 different operating properties. The reference number of the left-hand column is the same for all 15 tables of data. If the company had several operating properties as of 1972, then subsequent properties use the same number but a different letter. For example, Anaconda's property at Butte, Mont., is IA, whereas Anaconda's (now Anamax) Twin Buttes property in Arizona is IB. Table I gives general data for the properties including exact loca¬tion, milling rate, pertinent assay values and recoveries, and a brief listing of ore and gangue minerals. It was not possible to obtain any more information from the properties in Chile except that given in Table I. Crushing. Crushing plant operating data is given in Table 2. This table gives data on the crushers, feeders, and screens used at each property. The data obtained on feeders was confusing, but, rather than completely eliminate this information, it was decided to report it as given. The confusion lies only in the description of where the feeder is located. Where a primary feeder is listed it was not possible to determine if this feeder was on primary feed or primary discharge. For secondary feeders it is known that the feeder listed usually is feeding the secondary crushers, but at some properties it is handling the secondary crusher discharge. The same reasoning holds true for tertiary feeders-they handle either tertiary feed or discharge. This table contains a voluminous amount of data. A column giving tons per day per square foot of screen area would have been very informative, but some properties included circulating load in the feed rate and others listed new feed only, so calculations were meaningless. Autogenous Mills. The use of autogenous or semiautogenous mills for any property must be given serious consideration in the future. Table 3 lists data for four properties that are fully autogenous and four more semiautogenous mills that use balls to supplement the chunks of ore. This method of grinding is especially applicable when the ore is of such a nature that crushing problems would be severe, such as when ore is wet or sticky or contains a lot of fines. Paradoxically, it should also be considered when ore is tough and hard and blocky because then the competency of the ore means it can serve well as the grinding media. Where the ore varies greatly in hardness, as at Cyprus Pima and Lornex, semiautogenous grinding has been especially beneficial with capital costs and operating costs both 10-20% lower than could be obtained with conventional crushing and grinding. Rod Mills. For a great many years the standard milling operation used two- or three-stage crushing followed by open circuit rod mills and then ball mills in closed circuit with classifiers of some kind. A surprising number of properties crush to the fine size of about 3/8 in. and then use ball mills only, in closed circuit, with no rod mills. It is difficult to say whether rod mill-ball mill circuits or ball mill only is the best. One can be certain of two things: (1) the argument will go on for a long time and (2) for some mills one method obviously was superior over the other. As ball mills of 14, 15 ft, and larger came into use, more properties like Duval Sierrita (16b ft diam by 19 ft long) and Bougainville (18 x 21 ft) were built with single-stage ball mill grinding. Although there are larger rod mills used, especially in the iron ore industry, the largest rod mills on copper ore are at Twin Buttes (14 x 18.5 ft) and at Gibraltar (13'A x 20 ft). In 1967 a large kaolin deposit was discovered on the Jari River, a tributary of the Amazon, in the territory of Amapa in Brazil. The kaolin occurs in the Barreiras Series of Pliocene age and is part of the Belterra Clay. The kaolin was drilled and tested, and today a modern processing plant is producing over 150,000 tons per year of high quality paper coating clay. Some of the problems associated with the mine development, processing, personnel, and marketing of this remote kaolin deposit are discussed. The mineralogy and physical properties of the Jari kaolin deposit are also described.

The 1.8 mi (2.9 km) Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport Light Rail Transit Tunnels and Station project is comprised of the underground segments of the 11.8 mi(18.8 km) Hiawatha Light Rail Transit route in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The 21 ft 2 in(6.5 m) diameter twin tunnels were mined 65 ft beneath one of the busiest airports in the United States using an earth pressure balanced tunnel-boring machine. This paper will provide a project overview, review the major equipment selected, tunnel segment casting, and describe excavation and lining operations for the tunnels and station.

Colorado has recorded more than 100 years of industrial mineral production. Much of the state's history, culture, and economy is based in mining, but the industrial minerals and construction materials comprising the nonmetallics sector of the industry very often are overlooked or overshadowed by mineral fuels and the metals. Indeed, many of these materials find use in seemingly unimportant industrial applications essential to our economy and life style and yet are not so recognized by the consumer. Unlike many other mineral resources, the numerous industrial minerals occur in many different and often exotic geologic environments, some of which are characteristic only of the western states. In Colorado only a few of these minerals have continued production through the years; many saw only "boom" periods or other critical times of need, such as the world wars. The changing needs and demands of our society in the 1980s will stimulate yet another era of intensive activity in our industrial minerals storehouse. Researchers are finding new uses and applications for these materials in dealing with the energy crisis and fuel shortages, the need to develop domestic mineral reserves of all kinds, and the goals of reuse and recycling. Some of Colorado's little-used and unused industrial minerals hold extraordinary promise in solving some of these problems on the regional and national levels. In this paper we will look at the history of development of Colorado's more prominent nonmetallics and especially at current research on and future potential of several other commodities among which Colorado contains the largest known reserves.

Remote sensing is being tested for its ability to identify the severity of impact on streams that are subjected to contaminated mine drainage (CMD) in the Southern Anthracite Coalfield of Pennsylvania. Airborne digital multispectral video images of acidic and near-neutral CMD are being compared with field spectra, water chemistry, mineralogy, and microbiology. Spectral differences in the visible region of the electromagnetic spectrum are caused by the presence of schwertmannite in the acidic precipitates and ferrihydrite in the near- neutral precipitates. The acidic CMD averages 1,500 mg/L sulfate and has bacteria coated with schwertmannite; the near-neutral CMD averages 87 mg/L sulfate and has bacteria coated with ferrihydrite.

Acid rain legislation, the new tax package, excess coal capacity, the effects of low oil prices, how to increase coal exports: These were among the items discussed at the May 4-7, American Mining Congress coal convention in Pittsburgh. Some 2000 people attended the convention, which also offered 15 technical sessions. As always, the state of the domestic coal industry might be characterized as "long-term promise, short-term problems." And one of these problems is acid rain. Acid rain The proposed acid rain legislation in Congress could be the most costly piece of environmental legislation ever written. In its present form, the measure could cost the nation up to $110 billion over the next 15 years. Rep. Henry Waxman's (D-CA) bill, HR 4567, would mandate large reductions in sulfur dioxide emissions from coal-fired power plants. The bill has more than 150 Republican and Democratic cosponsors. Ed Addison is president of the Southern Co., one of the nation's largest utilities and users of domestic coal. Addison noted that America's electric utility industry buys and uses nearly 85% of the coal consumed in this country. He said Waxman's bill would drive up prices of low-sulfur coal, raise electric rates, and force miners out of work in high-sulfur coal regions. In repeating a standard coal industry response, Addison said the Clean Air Act is doing the job. In recent years, while coal use has gone up, S02 emissions have gone down. Current air pollution standards are producing cleaner air, he said. Despite concern over HR 4567, the bill's future is uncertain. Several coal industry executives and analysts predict the bill will die under weight of opposition from coal, utility, and steel interests. But the acid rain issue is gaining momentum. Future legislation of some kind is likely. Meanwhile, research continues to develop clean coal technology to deal with the S02 problem. Commercialization of these front-end technologies currently lags public sentiment for acid rain legislation. Ground water runoff and contamination is another area where future legislation would seem likely. Already, one bill has been introduced in Congress. A second is being drafted. The impact of such legislation may be significant according to Bruce Leavitt, a hydrogeologist with Consolidation Coal Co. He said if current proposals are adopted, there will be more federal, state, and local government involvement in ground water regulation. In any event, the coal industry can expect to see more emphasis on preventing acid mine drainage and on water replacement, according to Leavitt. He urged those in the coal industry to present information about mining and ground water. That is needed to prevent misdirected state and federal programs, he said. Another coal industry concern is excess capacity. The industry has the mines, equipment, and employees to produce 15% more coal than at present. Problem is, the markets are not there. Slower-than-predicted growth in electric utility coal use has kept sales sluggish. There are also tax uncertainties. Congress is considering repeal of the investment tax credit and elimination of black lung payments and excise taxes as deductible expenses. One analyst estimates the coal industry would lose $1.1 billion in five years, if the changes are approved. In addition, there are the usual concerns about excessive governmental regulations involving safety and environmental matters. Bill Kegel, for example, said these regulations mean extra costs and delays in developing mines. Kegel is president and chief executive officer of the Rochester & Pittsburgh Coal Co. More than half the electrical power in the US is generated by coal-fired plants. That percentage could slip by a couple of points as nuclear generators come on-line the next few years. About 1990, though, we will see the end of US nuclear plant construction. No new nuclear plants have been scheduled since 1978. So any growth in electric power use should benefit the coal industry. BethEnergy - High Power Mountain During 1985, BethEnergy - a Bethlehem Steel Corp. - subsidiary developed High Power Mountain, a 1.8-Mt/a (2-million-stpy) surface mine in West Virginia. Construction saw movement of more than 3 hm3 (4 million cu yds) of earth. A computerized 544 t/h (600 stph) heavy media cyclone prep plant and a 3.6-kt/h (4000-stph) railroad loadout facility were built in six months. And a 5.6-km (3.5-mile) railroad spur and loop bridging a major highway were constructed. Larry Willison of BethEnergy noted the project's ambitious construction schedule. It was forced by the need for the project to be market driven and - lacking available capital - externally financed. BethEnergy did several things before obtaining with Detroit Edison a market for 0.9 Mt/a (1 million stpy) of coal. Willison said his company prospected and proved the eastern half of its 8-km2

In the upgrading of finely-disseminated iron ores, selective desliming is the critical step which must be controlled in order to achieve efficient flotation. A prerequisite for selective desliming is a properly-dispersed pulp; sodium silicate is commonly used as a dispersant. The mechanism by which sodium silicate acts as a dispersant in the presence of calcium ions was examined by streaming potential measurements, settling tests, abstraction density determinations, selective flocculation tests and scanning electron microscope observations. The study established that calcium silicate precipitates on the mineral surfaces dispersed the pulp. Although sodium silicate was a nonselective dispersant, the addition of corn starch aided the flocculation of goethite over quartz at low silicate additions, but became ineffective at higher silicate levels. A model is presented to explain the dispersant mechanism of sodium silicate in the presence of calcium ion for selective flocculation of iron ores.

The design of 6 km of tunnels, plus enlargements, deep shafts in glacial and sandstone deposits for the conversion of the existing LEP underground laboratory at CERN, Geneva adjacent to the Jura Mountains/Lake Geneva had to be undertaken in an operational environment and in conjunction with other underground constructions associated with the US$3bn refurbishment.

The Egyptian marine phosphorite of Sebaiya West, the Nile Valley, consisting of both non-oxidized hard siliceous and oxidized leached friable ore types, is subjected to a roughing-cleaning silica flotation circuit for production of wet-process phosphoric acid concentrate. Operating at its maximum capacity of 268 t/hr, the following were the main problems encountered during the early stages of running the plant: 1. The tremendous amount of slimes generated by scrubbing the crushed ore causing turbidity in the plant thickener after a short time of operation, regardless of the added flocculant. 2. Rod mill choking leading to inefficient performance of all other equipment and poor flotation results. 3. The drastic increase in imported oleic acid price. Pulp density and slurry flowrate measurements at different points of the plant as well as ore microscopy, size distribution analysis, chemical analysis and x-ray diffraction analysis of representative ore samples coupled with Work Index measurements of feed samples showed that the wide variation in the ore's hardness was responsible for such problems. Application of the locally produced non-edible rice bran oil as a substitute to imported oleic acid in flotation resulted in total saving of U.S.$2 million in 1990. The total unsaturated fatty acid content of the oil is high, ranging from 75.2 to 81.5 mole % of which the C18-unsaturated fatty acid content ranges from 72 to 79 mole %.

The Romanian mining industry, especially salt mining, is going through a restructuring phase taking into account the Environment Acquis of the European Union1. In order to preserve the centuries-old salt mines and to develop new ones, in the same salt rock deposit, the long term stability assessment of the saline complex is very important. This case study refers to the Praid salt mine, which includes old salt mines, with impressive sizes, located above the new mines, with activity in progress, in order to provide the means and solutions for efficient conservation and sustainable exploitation for the salt resources. The DKRControl method and FLAC 3D code were used in order to assess the confidence level for the computed prediction of the stability of the salt mine complex salt.
