The logic of regression analysis as an operations research tool is critically examined, and a formal basis for its application to mining problems is developed. The traditional view of regression analysis as a statistical discipline does not provide an adequate basis for evaluating a regression model in a specific area such as ore reserve calculation or process control. In particular, the validity of the residual-sum-of-squares criterion is questioned, and the need for a criterion based on interpolative features of the model is emphasized. Strictly speaking, a regression model is statistically supported only at points at which observations are available, yet inferences are drawn with regard to a continuum. When considered as a mathematical function, therefore, the model is observationally defined only on a domain consisting of a finite number of points. Extension of this domain to an interval of the real line must be based on physical rather than statistical argument. Vector space and function theory concepts useful as a logical framework for a physically oriented problem analysis are discussed and their usefulness demonstrated in a practical problem.

Surface mining of coal is undoubtedly one of the more controversial aspects of the mineral industries today. There is a constant tug between the need for readily available and inexpensive energy supplies and the desire to minimize disturbance to the land. Without a doubt, surface mining severely disturbs the land surface. The duration of this disturbance, from a minimum of a few months to a maximum of infinity, however, is strictly dependent upon the mine operator's willingness to reclaim. Surface mining critics claim that it is impossible to ameliorate the detrimental effects of this mining to insignificance. The more vocal critics, indeed, are calling for complete abolition of surface mining for coal. Thus, they do not believe that it is possible to restore surface- mined land to pre-mining conditions. As a consequence of this position, an adversary relationship has developed between the operators and their critics who, simultaneously, believe they are doing their best for the United States. In a forum of mining experts, there is little need to recount the kind and amount of devastation that can result from poorly reclaimed land. This has been done numerous times, including once 1 by the author. Of particular interest to this paper, though, are the environmental hazards associated with contour strip mining. In addition to the problems of area mining: denudation of vegetation; exposure of toxic spoil; increase of erosion runoff; etc.--contour mining has the very real problem of landslide due to the outslope stacking of overburden. Contour mining is understood to be the extraction of coal from a hillside outcrop such that the resultant pit follows, or nearly follows, an elevation contour. The problem with contour mining as usually practiced is that the spoil from the cut, or the first cut if multiple cuts are made, is placed on the outslope. If this slope is steep, the resulting pile is difficult to stabilize, generally erodes swiftly, and may fail disastrously.

Recently Lurgi has succesfully commissioned Peru's first direct reduction rotary kiln at SIDERPERU?s Chimbote works. The order included comprehensive engineering services and supply of special equipment to modify three existing cement kilns according to the SL/RN process. The kilns were cut to 62m length and installed with a slope of 2.5%. A new heating system, including shell burners, was supplied and inlet and outlet ends of the kilns completely renewed. Figure 1 shows the kilns after modification.

The Copper Canyon Cu-Au-Ag deposits include two geologically distinct hypogene ore bodies developed primarily in late Paleozoic rocks adjacent to a 38-m.y.-old potassic-altered granodiorite, whose emplacement seems to have been controlled largely by the Virgin fault, a north-striking normal fault. Widespread but subeconomic concentrations of sulfides as fracture and cavity fillings in skarn apparently preceded the final intrusion of the granodiorite. In the west ore body, metals reached ore-grade concentrations through the massive replacement of andradite by chalcopyrite, pyrrhotite, and pyrite mineral assemblages. The east ore body probably formed after the granodiorite reached its present level. Calculated 6dD values of water in equilibrium with primary and secondary biotites range from -76 to -99 per mil at temperatures indicated by d180 values from coexisting quartz and biotite. The lightest values are in secondary biotite from the east ore body. These data suggest that fluids associated with potassic alteration here were most likely composed of magmatic water mixed with some meteoric water.

A method to improve the quality of Magmnt zinc concentrates to become acceptable feed to an electrolytic zinc refinery. The magnesia content of zinc concentrates produced was too high due to particle locking with the sphalerite in coarse fractions. Regrinding of the concentrates to a very fine particle size and then refloating the sphalerite was chosen to eliminate a sufficient amount of the magnesia to make the concentrates acceptable.

Staying competitive in the highly aggressive Powder River Basin is a challenge facing all operators. Any advantage that a mine utilizes to improve productivity and reduce costs could mean the difference in the tight spot coal market. Technological advances in mining equipment and data acquisition at the Eagle Butte Mine in Gillette, Wyoming result in productivity gains and increased maintenance awareness. A new overburden haulage truck fleet with an onboard payload and fault monitoring system interacts via telemetry with the loading shovel and PC's located in production and maintenance offices, enabling staff to monitor production and maintenance on a real-time basis. This paper will describe the system and highlight the benefits realized as a result of its implementation.

For the past 30 years, process flowsheet design has been accomplished largely through modeling and simulation. This approach provides circuit designers the freedom to test various separation approaches while minimizing physical and human resource requirements. The Limn® software provides a unique approach to process simulation, through a Microsoft Excel interface. While the software comes with standard process models for numerous unit operations, the Excel calculation environment and the accompanying VBA platform provide a convenient interface for custom model integration, even for non-experienced programmers. This feature is especially useful for university students in introductory process modeling and simulation-assisted flowsheet design courses as well as experienced practitioners with proprietary process models. This paper shows how the Limn® software may be used to solve basic process engineering problems as well as more comprehensive circuit design challenges. Industrial examples as well as opportunities for training and education are presented.

Silicon Carbide and Aluminum Oxide were two of the early forms of man-made abrasives often referred to as synthetic and were invented at the turn of the century. Edward G. Acheson invented Silicon Carbide in 1893 and Charles F. Jacobs filed a patent for the manufacture of fused alumina from bauxite in 1900. Jacobs' patent provided a method for tempering the alumina by reduction and fusion to a degree of hardness and toughness suitable for abrasive purposes. These two inventions are the basis of the synthetic abrasive industry today. Improvements have been made in the equipment used in the process, however the process itself remains basically the same. In 1904 A. C. Higgins observed that hot spots developed on the shell of the pot furnace used in the reduction of bauxite. He found that by spraying water on the hot spots they could be prevented and, in addition, they failed to return in the same place. Higgins reasoned that the cooling effect of the water caused the melt contacting the metal shell to freeze as an insulating autogenous refractory. This suggested that an improved furnace design could be obtained by using a metal shell which is continuously flooded with water on the exterior surface. Paradoxically, a furnace required to contain tons of molten Aluminun Oxide was thus constructed of nothing but a sheet steel shell with no refractory lining at all. A test of such an arrangement was tried by Higgins with considerable trepidation and was found to be extremely satisfactory.

"Methane gas explosions in a longwall coal mine can originate from in or around the gob and can seriously harm nearby workers and equipment. In order to fully understand the explosion flame and pressure wave propagation in the mine, it is important to investigate methane flame propagation in confined spaces as well as flame interaction with rock rubble and other mine structures. The latter can lead to enhanced turbulence causing high-speed deflagrations and/or detonations. Researchers ignited methane-air mixtures in horizontal, cylindrical reactors that contained inserts to simulate various gob characteristics. Rock surface topology and ignition location were investigated. Results show rock surface roughness increased fluid motion, thereby increasing methane flame front propagation velocity, overall pressure rise of the explosion, and time of pressure decay. Moving the point of ignition away from the open end of the reactor resulted in an increase in peak overpressure and an overall pressure rise of the explosion. Experiments were used to validate a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) combustion model that will be incorporated into a mine-scale explosion model to simulate and predict explosion hazards of large scale methane gas deflagrations in longwall coal mines. INTRODUCTION Coal mining is an integral part to our global society with coal-fired power plants providing about 40% of our global electricity [1]. A common method of extracting coal underground is by longwall mining. Researchers and investigative reports have found that explosive gas zones of methane-air mixtures can form along the longwall face and within the longwall gob, presenting an explosion risk to nearby workers and equipment [2]. In an explosion, the resulting flame and pressure wave presents a fatal traumatic injury hazard and can cause serious damage to equipment. In order to evaluate and mitigate the explosion risks in longwall coal mining, researchers at the Colorado School of Mines are developing a coupled CFD and combustion model of a longwall coal mine. The purpose of the model will be to better predict the explosion hazards under various mine conditions in order to build stronger prevention and mitigation strategies for miners."

Fatigue-related risk is a persistent safety concern for the mining industry. However, fatigue and sleepiness are often treated interchangeably, which can lead to confusion and potentially less effective reduction of safety risk. To provide clarity, we present an overview of similarities and differences between work-related fatigue risk and sleepiness including definitions, theories, measurements, and mitigation strategies. As a supplement, a summative visual model which highlights these similarities and differences is presented. Expanding industry knowledge in this area will assist safety professionals in crafting more targeted risk management practices appropriate for work-related fatigue risk, sleepiness, or both.

Although the economic importance of recovering copper by leaching of mine work dumps from open-pit operations has been realized for some time, serious attempts to understand and to improve such operations through scientific research has been made only in recent years. This progress report covers the results of chemical, physical, and biological studies pertaining to the dump leaching process and discusses salient features and parameters that may be helpful in improving such operations.

The criteria used to design, operate and control flotation columns are significantly different from those used for conventional flotation machines. Therefore, a computer-aided design (CAD) package for column flotation has been developed. The simulator has been set up using guidelines developed at Virginia Tech and information published in literature during the past few years. The simulator is useful for determining the proper design and appropriate operating conditions for a column cell to fit a specific set of conditions. In addition, the simulator can be used for training in column operation and for trouble-shooting operational problems. Simulation results have been found to be in good agreement with experimental data obtained using laboratory columns.

In 1975 bituminous coal and lignite production in the United States reached an all-time high of 637 million tons, an increase of 6 percent over production in 1974. The output, valued at $11.9 billion f.o.b. mines, was produced at 5,100 mines in 24 states (6). Coal mining is the largest mining industry in Alabama. Production from Alabama's mines in 1975 was over 21 million tons, and present projections forecast a steady increase in production, with tonnages almost doubling by 1985 (5). Of the total quantity of coal produced, about 16 million tons were consumed in electric power generation and the remainder was used for metallurgical coke production, extraction of chemicals and petroleum based products, and power for industry. The fact that 75 percent of Alabama's power is generated by burning coal attests to the importance of this fossil fuel to the State. Approximately 14 million tons of coal were produced by strip-mining methods in Alabama during 1975 and about 7 million tons were produced by underground mining during the same period. Surface mining is expected to continue at about 14 million tons per year, but by 1980 underground coal mining is expected to increase to about 25 million tons (3). About 7 million tons of surface-mined coal in Alabama is subjected to some means of washing or cleaning. The methods used are screening accompanied by heavy media separation, jigging, tabling and flotation. Some of the simpler approaches employ screening and jigging, or tabling. Except where flotation is used, the screen undersize fraction (finer than 0.25 inch) is rejected, with the result that 10 to 15 percent of the coal is lost. Thus, in the State of Alabama an aggregate of about 1 million tons of coal is wasted annually in the fines which are impounded from treatment of surface-mined coal. The use of the Humphreys spiral to concentrate fine coal was practiced as early as 1947. At that time the Hudson Coal Company (1) used Humphreys spirals to concentrate anthracite fines. The San Andres mine, located in the western mountain region of Honduras, Central America, contains epithermal gold mineralization as disseminations, in quartz-chalcedonic veins and stockworks. Host rocks include a thick sequence of Cretaceous to Tertiary conglomerates, sandstones, rhyodacite tuffs and andesites. Mineralization is controlled by northwest and northeast striking, normal faults and fractures which dip steeply east and west. Currently, 500 STPD of 1. 93 Grams/MT gold ore is being open-pit mined from the conglomerate and andesite. The mine is at the west end of a mineralized zone that can be traced over an area of approximately 1.5 square kilometers.

Rock surrounding mine openings frequently is an impermeable type such as shale or granite. Most rock, however, has joints, bedding planes, cleavage planes, or other potential discontinuities. Permeability to fluids (gas or liquid) may exist via natural joints or fractures in an otherwise impermeable rock. In the mining situation, tectonic and induced tensile and shear stresses may be great enough to cause joints to open or fractures to develop in previously solid rock. The rock, as a result, becomes less self-supporting and may - require artificial support such as rock bolts or timber. Simultaneously, as fractures develop, permeable paths may be created. If fluid can be injected into a previously solid and impermeable rock mass, a logical conclusion is that a fracture (crack) flow path must be transmitting that fluid. The U.S. Bureau of Mines Laramie (Wyo) Energy Research Center has been evaluating results of in-situ oil shale fracturing (hydraulic or explosive) and retorting experiments by. a fluid (air) injection , and borehole air flow profile logging technique since 1956 (1, 14, 15). In the oil shale case, it is imperative to know the location and flow capacity (permeability) of natural fractures, if they exist, and induced fractures that inter-connect vertical wellbores at depths of fifty to several hundred feet. By injecting air into one wellbore in a system of several wells and measuring input volume and pressure while simultaneously measuring the output of other wellbores, the minimum areal extent of interconnecting permeable fractures can be determined. Exact locations (depths) of fractures and individual fracture flow capacities between wellbores can be determined by air flow profile logging (14, 15). Knowledge of fracture locations and permeability is essential to rational experimental in-situ retorting design.

The adsorption of silver on activated carbon from cyanide solutions was studied as a function of concentration, ionic strength and pH. In cyanide solutions, silver exists mainly as the linear Ag(CN)2 complex and adsorbs on activated carbon following the Freundlich isotherm. The uptake and rate of adsorption increase with the addition of KC1 and KNO3 but changes only slightly with pH. In contrast, the adsorption of Cu(I), Zn(II), Cd(II), and Hg(II) shows marked changes with pH, closely following the predominance profiles of their neutral and singly-charged cyano complexes. Clearly, multicharged negative complexes are repelled by the negatively-charged carbon surface. This sensitivity of activated carbon to the charge of the adsorbing species indicates that silver adsorbs as an anion, not chemically bound to the co-adsorbing counterions. For the same reason, activated carbon is selective to metals that form neutral and Singly-charged cyano complexes, namely gold and silver.

The development drilling program of the Copper Cities mine indicated that the molybdenum content of the ore would be about 0.011% MoS2' The molybdenum content of the Miami mine at the same time was about 0.025% MOS2' The Miami mill had a very successful molybdenum operation which used bleeder turbine steam from the Miami power plant for the steaming operation. The much lower grade of the Copper Cities ore, the absence of a source of low cost steam and the use of sodium aerofloat as the copper collector which Miami experience indicated did not respono readily to the steaming technique made very doubtful the success of a similar operation at Copper Cities. However, the relatively few pounds of copper that could be recovered from the low grade Copper Cities heads made very desirable the recovery of the molybdenwa,as a source of additional revenue. Accordingly, shortly after the Copper Cities mill began operation, a research program was instituted to develop a suitable method of molybdenum recovery. This program explored first, the successful steaming process then in use at Miami and as expected, found it unable to decompose the sodium aerofloat copper collector. The known chemical depressants were then tried without much encouragement. Finally the copper concentrate was dried, not roasted, to 2-3% mOisture and this along with sodium ferro-cyanide and cyanide resulted in sufficient copper depression that a final molybdenum concentrate containing 1.0% CU could be made. Researchers at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) are conducting research to improve the ventilation of large-opening underground stone mines. The mine ventilation in these mines are characterized by: (1) challenges related to keeping airflow velocities high enough to effectively remove or dilute airborne contaminants, (2) low pressure losses needed to move large air volumes of air, and (3) costly stoppings needed to direct ventilation airflows. Each of two field studies was dedicated to specific focus areas. The first focus area was the characterization of underground mine ventilation airflow. The primary means of airflow control in stone mines is through the use of freestanding booster fans. The primary goal of this study was to identify the effectiveness of various fan types and optimize their placement. Both traverse and grid-based airflow readings were taken at various distances from the fans, ranging from 70 ft to 425 ft away from the fan. The air readings were taken using a vane-anemometer and a handheld hotwire anemometer. The data was used to develop precise computational fluid dynamics models. The second focus area was to determine diesel particulate matter (DPM) concentrations in the mine. For large-opening underground stone mines, controlling DPM exposures dictates the design of the ventilation system. Therefore, researchers carried out the DPM sampling campaign to identify potential areas of concern within the mine. The samples collected during the campaign were analyzed using NIOSH Method 5040. The sampling was done using the Mine Safety and Health Administration’s (MSHA) compliance sampling methodology.

The electrokinetic and flotation behavior of the green alga Chlorella vulgaris was studied in the absence and presence of Pb(II), Al (III) and flotation collectors. It was found that the presence of Al (III) is necessary for good flotation of the organism whether or not Pb(II) is present when dodecylammonium chloride or sodium dodecylsulfate is used as collector. Best flotation using dodecylamine is at about pH 8 and best flotation when using sodium dodecylsulfate is at about pH 4. It appears because of the small size of the organisms that the Al (III) is necessary for flocculation to enhance bubble-cell contact and C. vulgaris removal from water. When N-dodecyl-2-aminoproprionic acid is used as collector good flotation occurs at about pH 4 without the addition of Al (III).
